Kirkwood launches new website In the summer, Kirkwood Hospice launched a brand new website.

The new site was designed and created with Huddersfield based digital consultancy firm Made by Bridge, who worked closely with Kirkwood’s team to bring the vision to life.

The design process involved speaking to staff and volunteers as well as patients, carers and supporters who attend our quarterly Future Forum.

The result is a modern, clean and vibrant website, which can be viewed easily on mobile, tablet, laptop and PC. We have also made it quicker to find what you’re looking for; creating easy to navigate menus and highlighting related material which we think you might be interested in.

Record breaking night to remember for Kirkwood Kirkwood celebrated its tenth Midnight Memory Walk on Saturday 18th June. A record 1,278 people stayed up late to walk in memory of their loved ones, helping to raise an incredible £95,000 for patient care.

The crowd began to arrive hours before the start, creating an electric and emotionally charged atmosphere. DJs, stilt walkers and a dazzling neon colour show got the crowd into the party spirit before SJ, of PPD Studios in Marsh, got the crowd limbered up with an energetic cardio dance warm up.

65 year old Heather Howes, of Meltham, took on the Midnight Memory Walk with friends.

She said: “I am walking with my granddaughter and friends from Slimming World tonight.

Kirkwood is a really good cause.

I visited a friend’s nephew at Kirkwood and saw first-hand the services and care that they offer.”

Wendy Sykes’ mum was cared for by Kirkwood before she died.

Wendy decided to take part in the walk with family and friends.

“I am walking for Mum and Dad tonight.” said Wendy. “My mum, Margaret, was at the Hospice and received fantastic

care up until her death. Mum referred to the nurses as ‘angels’ and the staff also supported me.”

“We did the walk last year as well – it’s a fabulous event!”

Event organiser Emily Kennedy was delighted that so many turned up to support the Hospice.

She said: “Tonight has been amazing. To see so many people here walking in memory of a loved one is humbling.

“As well as raising funds, this event brings the community together and allows us all to share special memories.

“We’re delighted that the Midnight Memory Walk has celebrated 10 years. We are already looking forward to next year.”

Light up a Life We know that Christmas is a very special time of year when people often remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of loved ones. At Kirkwood Hospice, thousands of people come together every December, as part of Light up a Life, to remember a loved one by dedicating a light in their honour on our stunning beech tree in the Hospice gardens.

Why I’m Supporting Light up a Life Rob from Dalton As someone who lives very locally, I have been familiar with the work of Kirkwood Hospice for a long time. I’m proud to say that I’ve regularly supported the Hospice over the years because I’ve always felt that it’s an extremely worthwhile cause, helping people in their hour of need.

Earlier this year, it was my family who needed the Hospice’s help. My mum, Sue, spent the final seven days of her life at Kirkwood following a life-limiting illness. The Hospice staff could not do enough for me and my family. They completely took

away the stress and allowed us to spend precious time with Mum. When you know that you have limited time left with someone you love so dearly, someone who brought you into this world, just being close to them without having to worry about anything else is the most beautiful and reassuring thing. I will always cherish that quality time I had with Mum whilst she was in Kirkwood. It made the world of difference to me.

In the moments after Mum died, exactly a week after she was admitted, I was alone with her in the room for a short while - but not for long. A nurse must have seen me alone with Mum so she entered the room, held my hand and just sat with me. This was

exactly the kind of thing that my mum would have done to comfort me. That nurse helped me to get through the most difficult few minutes of my life. I will always be indebted to her.

I would urge everyone to support Kirkwood by taking part in Light up a Life this year.

You never know when you, or someone you love, might need the help of the Hospice. For me, Light up a Life 2016 will be very significant. My sister, Katie, died in 2009 and Mum took part in Light up a Life every year to remember Katie. This provided her with a lot of comfort. Money for old bikes Social enterprise scheme sees Hospice finding new homes for bikes destined for the scrapheap.

You may have noticed something ‘wheelie’ unexpected in some of our shop windows over the past few months.

A number of fully refurbished two wheelers have been taking pride of place in several of our shops since the start of this summer. And it’s all down to a social enterprise scheme that is helping UK charities to raise money from old bikes.

As part of the Recycle Your Cycle scheme, our shops have been selling bikes which have been repaired and painstakingly refurbished by local prison inmates.

The scheme was developed to aid prisoner rehabilitation by

helping them to develop useful skills and improve their job prospects on release.

It also means that bikes previously destined for the local tip are being given a new lease of life; becoming a high quality product which can be sold on for the benefit of good causes.

At Kirkwood Hospice, the bikes have proved so popular that our Retail team have already placed their third order.

Trading Co-ordinator Rachael Filak is responsible for placing orders for the bikes and is delighted with how popular the scheme is proving to be.

She said: “We’re really happy with how well the bikes are going

down with our shoppers.”

“Purchasing the bikes on a sale or return basis allows Recycle Your Cycle to continue to run the initiative and to teach offenders new skills. It also allows us to sell them on to a good home.

“With the profit we make going back into running Hospice services, it’s a real win-win for everyone.”

Fashionable new look for Milnsbridge shop It’s a case of changing rooms at our Kirkwood Hospice shop in Milnsbridge.

Back in August, the Market Steet shop was transformed almost overnight by a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and local handymen, who worked through the weekend to give the shop a brand new look.

The team at the shop are so pleased with the results that they are encouraging shoppers new and old to come down and take a look at the revamped space.

Located at 46 Market Street, the Milnsbridge shop first opened its doors in 2008 and has been a fixture of the village ever since.

and paint was made to the shop by Paul Browne at the Dulux Centre on Leeds Road, Huddersfield.

WR Decorators and multi-trade handyman Wayne Redman then helped to transform the shop into a vibrant and welcoming new space over the course of just one weekend.

Kat Martin, who oversaw the project was keen to pass on her appreciation to all those that helped.

She said: “A big thank you goes out to everyone that came and gave up their time, free of charge, to help us decorate.”

“The new shop looks fantastic and we hope lots of people will pop in to take a look at the great items we have for sale.”

Fundraising - the Right Way! A report produced for the Charity Commission in June 2016 concluded that public trust and confidence in charities had fallen to an all-time low. In this article, Garry Wilkinson, Kirkwood’s Director of Fundraising and Marketing, discusses ethical fundraising and the importance of valuing supporters.

Back in June, the Charity Commission’s report: Public trust and confidence in charities identified recent critical media coverage of charity practices as one of the reasons for a decline in trust. The report also highlighted the public’s mistrust of some fundraising techniques, with 74% saying that certain methods made them feel uncomfortable.

High-pressure fundraising tactics such as phone calls and street fundraising in particular make the public feel less inclined to give.

The Etherington Report, also published this year, looked at how some charities employ aggressive fundraising techniques, persistently target specific supporters or share the personal information of supporters with other charities.

Recommendations from this report included the creation of a brand new Fundraising Regulator.

This Fundraising Regulator will have responsibility for enforcing a new ‘Fundraising Code’, investigating complaints and punishing those who step outside its rules.

Frustration for smaller charities This decision has been met with some frustration in the hospice sector. Of course, all charities should fundraise the right way - ethically and with concern for their supporters and the public alike. Those who do not

should be held to account.

However, the frustration in this case is that hospices work hard to do just that. The charities identified in the media as employing poor fundraising practice were, in the main, national charities.

At Kirkwood, the Fundraising team is well aware of the Hospice’s excellent reputation within Kirklees; a reputation built on providing expert care for almost 30 years. At Kirkwood we consider very carefully how we raise the money we need to continue funding care and aim to do this as sensitively as possible.

Working Together When I started working in the hospice sector, over 15 years ago, I was amazed at the amount of networking and sharing of ideas between hospices.

I became a member of the National Association of Hospice Fundraisers (NAHF), which gave me the opportunity to learn from, and share with, other hospice fundraisers. It was through this organisation that the idea for Midnight Walks was first shared and Light up a Life developed.

These campaigns have raised millions of pounds for hospice care.

I was elected onto the NAHF Executive Committee in 2006, and had the honour of serving as its Chair for three years (until earlier this year).

What I saw regularly during my time on the Exec was new fundraisers attending meetings and learning in the same way I had. They learned not just how to raise money to provide care for their hospice’s patients, but how to raise it properly. They learned how the ethos of the hospice movement should be reflected in the way money is raised and how maintaining the good reputation of the hospice is vital.

In short, they learned how not to fall into the trap of the large national charities that were so heavily criticised in the Etherington Report.

Adding life to days Senior Staff Nurse, Anna-Marie Wilkinson, tells us what it’s like to be a nurse on the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit.

What is a typical day like for a Kirkwood Nurse?

Most days are busy. We never know who will be coming through the door and what challenges we will face, but I hardly ever walk out at the end of a shift without a smile.

What is the most important part of what you do?

It might sound obvious, but it’s making the patient and their family feel like they are the only people that matter. Even if you have nine other patients that day, they should feel like they are your whole world. Working here at Kirkwood enables us to give the patient our full-time and attention and to put them first.

What is it like being part of the clinical team?

I am so lucky to have an amazing team around me who are committed to providing holistic care. They enable us to ensure that promises we make to patients are fulfilled.

That is something I am very proud of.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your role?

I have developed so many skills in my time at Kirkwood. Communication and listening skills are as vital in this environment as

Kirkwood’s Family Care Team Emotions are very powerful things and working through them can be difficult for many of us. At Kirkwood Hospice, our Family Care Team offer those living with, caring for or bereaved by a life-limiting illness a safe space in which to feel heard and accepted.

Kirkwood’s dedicated team of Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Bereavement Support workers help people to deal with the emotional, psychological and spiritual impact of living with a life-limiting illness. As the team’s title suggests, they are here for the whole family, offering support for the patient, their relatives and friends, including children and young adults.

Consisting of a Psychotherapist, Family Therapist and a Spiritual Care Co-ordinator - who work alongside a team of qualified and dedicated volunteers - Kirkwood’s Family Care Team deliver services for people across our community as well as those being cared for on our In-Patient Unit.

“Coming to terms with an illness or dealing with grief often makes us question elements of our lives; things like the meaning

of life, relationships, spiritual crises, uncertainty and anxiety.” says Seamus Nash, Kirkwood’s Family Care Team Leader.

“Our aim is to provide the most rounded care for our clients so that they feel stronger and better equipped to cope after having accessed our services, in whatever way that might be.

“The Family Care Team at Kirkwood is always happy to

talk to people who are in need of support.” says Seamus. “Even if our services aren’t suitable, we can refer on to other services in Kirklees, so we encourage people to get in touch if they need help.”

A carer’s perspective: Jude’s story Jude’s son Jody is a kind, handsome, adventurous and high achieving young man. After being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease whilst living in Australia, he returned home to the UK. Just over 12 months on, Jody can no longer walk, speak, laugh or cry and Jude has taken on the responsibility of being his main carer. In this powerful article, she talks about the son she loves and the difference Kirkwood has made to their lives.

“Jody has been an adventurer since birth.” says Jude. “At seven, he put a rucksack and a little tent on his back and went to camp in the back garden, which happened to be a mountain on the west coast of Ireland.”

As a young man, Jody travelled to all corners of the globe as part of his job in the travel industry; places like Alaska and the Pantanal region of South America.

He’s a keen photographer and has taken pictures all over the world. Many of these have been published in travel magazines.

“He’s a quick witted and articulate man with a wicked sense of humour and the bluest eyes.” says Jude.

12 months ago, Jody stepped off a plane from Australia. Back then he could speak, walk, talk, swallow, laugh and cry. He could do everything that we can do and probably more.

He can no longer do any of these things. At a very young age, Jody was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

“The hardest thing to say is ‘my son is dying’. Saying those words never gets any easier.” says Jude.

Jody’s GP referred him to the Community Palliative Care Team at Kirkwood Hospice and one of Kirkwood’s Clinical Nurse Specialists went to visit the family

Jude admits to feeling anxious about the visit. “We thought, ‘Why do we need to see palliative care, why now? He’s well, we don’t need this yet’.

“But avoiding the Hospice meant avoiding the truth. It’s a bit of denial that we carry with us because we don’t want to accept what’s happening.”

Jody and Jude decided to attend a Drop-In Day at the Hospice.

“It was brilliant.” says Jude. “We were met with smiling faces – people who care.”

As a carer, Jude says it’s all too easy to focus on what you can’t do. “There is always a feeling of guilt that you shouldn’t do this or feel that.”

“What is really frustrating is that the thing I want to do is save

my son’s life - but I can’t.”

To help Jude acknowledge her grief, she now regularly visits the Hospice’s Family Care Team for support.

“I go to vent and offload some of the volcano which is constantly erupting.” she says. “It may be capped for a while, but it’s constantly brewing.”

“The ethos of Kirkwood Hospice shines through. My son is not a tick box or a task. He is a person in his own right, with his own amazing story. At Kirkwood Hospice they want to know the individual, to know their story, to validate their life and provide holistic care for the whole family.”

“Can you imagine how safe it makes me feel that I can go there and feel there is someone who really cares?”

Remembering special people on 10th Anniversary of Golf Day

Anniversary event raises a staggering £9,500 Bradley Park Golf Club was the place to be on Saturday 18th June as golfers of all ages and abilities took to the fairways for our 10th Charity Golf Day. After a relatively wet week, the rain held off long enough to allow all forty teams of four to complete 18 holes at one of the county’s most popular golfing venues.

The anniversary event was a landmark for the Hospice, which held its first golf day in 2007.

The brainchild of keen golfer and local man, Martin Folan, he continues to organise the tournament in memory of his sister and brother-in-law.

“The Kirkwood Hospice Golf Day was founded and dedicated

to the memories of Bridie and Bomber, two of the loveliest people ever to walk God’s Earth.” said Martin.

“Both Bridie and Bomber spent their days being cared for at Kirkwood Hospice and I for one will never forget the care and compassion the nurses and staff showed my sister and brotherin-law. This is the 10th year of our Charity Golf Day. Long may it continue!”

After raising £9,500 at this year’s event, the Charity Golf Day has now topped an incredible £80,000 in the past 10 years.

by The Pink Link and The Woodman Inn, is now in its fifth year. Once again, big numbers turned out to take on the scenic 5 or 10k course, with participants of all ages and abilities testing themselves against their fellow runners.

For many, it was their first ever charity run, whilst others used it as

a warm up for the Great North Run taking place the following weekend.

Many who signed up also purchased exclusive Trail Run vests for the occasion, creating a swathe of white amongst the multi-coloured vests of runners representing their clubs.

A big thank you goes out to all those who supported the Trail Run 2016. Whether you took part, volunteered your time to help or came down to cheer on the

runners, your support makes a big difference to everyone at Kirkwood Hospice.

Dementia Care Specialist joining Kirkwood Hospice A newly appointed Admiral Nurse will be joining the Hospice team from September, providing complex palliative and end-of-life care to people living with dementia.

In partnership with Kirklees Council and Dementia UK, Kirkwood has recently appointed a hospice Admiral Nurse to support our care teams and the wider Admiral Nursing team in Kirklees.

People living with dementia at the end-of-life may develop complex palliative symptoms.

The new hospice Admiral Nurse will provide essential care in the Kirklees community to people living with dementia, as well as supporting their families and carers.

Admiral Nurses provide a unique role in care management by joining up the different parts of the health and social care system, so the needs of family carers and people with dementia can be addressed in a co-ordinated way, preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and enabling people to live a better quality of life whilst improving support to their families. Dementia UK will work with Kirkwood Hospice and

Kirklees Council to support the existing Admiral Nurse service in Kirklees.

The hospice Admiral Nurse will work closely with our multidisciplinary team to support patients and families living with dementia at the end-of-life.

Once the service has been fully established, the hospice Admiral Nurse will work with the wider Admiral Nursing team in Kirklees, offering expertise and support on complex palliative care and endof-life cases.

Director of Clinical Services, Sarah Shaw, said: “Improving access to care for people who could use our services but currently don’t is a vital part of our strategy.

“A recent report from the Care Quality Commission highlighted concerns that end-of-life care needs of people from equality groups, including people living with dementia, are particularly overlooked. Our aim is to reduce inequality of care and to reach

out to the wider community of Kirklees to improve access to dementia care at the end-of-life.

“The addition of a hospice Admiral Nurse is a huge step towards achieving this.

“All of Kirkwood’s staff have received Dementia Friends training and the new Admiral Nurse will complement the services our team already provide, helping to ensure the highest possible standard of care for those in need.”

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said: “The appointment of the Admiral Nurse is fantastic news.

We see first-hand the impact dementia has on people’s lives and recognise the important contribution that Admiral Nurses make in helping everyone to understand and cope with the challenges presented by dementia.”

Wendy Weidner, Business Development Manager at Dementia UK said: “Admiral Nursing is a proven model in the Kirklees community. We’re pleased that we’re able to work collaboratively with Kirkwood Hospice and Kirklees Council to enhance palliative and end-oflife care for local families who are living with dementia.”

Tree-Cycle Creative Competition for Junior Fundraisers They say that Christmas is for kids. So when it comes to creative and unusual design ideas for this year’s Hospice Share-A-Card, who better to ask than our junior fundraisers out there in the Kirklees community?

All kinds of materials can be used to create a Christmas card design, such as; coloured pencils, papers and cards, textiles, pastels, paints or crayons. The only limit is your child’s imagination.
