This year, Kirkwood Hospice is celebrating 30 years of providing specialist care for people across Kirklees living with life-limiting illnesses, their families and loved ones.

In this issue you’ll find some unique content, including a look back at the last 30 years and an interview with one of our longest serving members of staff.

Kirkwood Hospice highly praised by Care Quality Commission Kirkwood Hospice has been given an excellent score for the quality of care it provides by healthcare inspectors.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), made an unannounced visit to the Hospice in September last year, awarding an overall ‘Good’ rating, whilst singling out the care we provide as ‘Outstanding’.

In the report, inspectors described Kirkwood’s service as having “a strong visible, personcentred culture”.

It also praised staff, who it says are “highly motivated and inspired to offer care that is kind and compassionate”.

As part of their investigation, CQC inspectors spoke with patients and families, who were keen to highlight their experiences.

One patient commented: “I felt safe as soon as I came to the Hospice.” Another said: “The staff are kind. I’ve been given my personality back.”

Kirkwood Chief Executive, Michael Crowther, said: “This latest report from CQC is another positive endorsement that the care we provide for people across Kirklees is very high quality.

“At Kirkwood, our priority is to provide care that focusses on the individual and those close to them. We help people to live the best quality of life they can through excellent advice, support and personalised care.

“As we enter our 30th year of providing specialist care in Kirklees, the report also helps our plans to further develop our

services and continue to improve what we offer to people.

“We remain determined to reach out to more people in Kirklees who could benefit from the outstanding care that is provided at Kirkwood.”

Sarah Shaw, Kirkwood’s Director of Clinical Services, was keen to praise the efforts of the Hospice team.

She said: “To receive such a positive report from the CQC is a testament to the hard work of our team of employees and volunteers, who work tirelessly to improve the experience of our patients and those close to them. Everyone at Kirkwood goes above and beyond to meet people’s needs.

“The biggest endorsement we can receive is from those who experience our care first-hand and the positive comments received in the CQC report from both patients and families show that we are supporting people in the right way, whether here at the Hospice or out in the community.

What CQC inspectors said about Kirkwood: “People who used the service told us that staff were excellent, showed compassion and went the extra mile to involve them in decision making and to support them with their end of life wishes.”

“The culture of the organisation was open and transparent and the registered manager was visible in the service.”

“A range of activities were planned for people. Friends and family were welcomed to the service any time.”

“People were supported to access health professionals as the need arose.”

“The service was very involved in the wider community.”

Kirkwood launch Hospice Admiral Nurse Service A brand new service, designed to support people living with dementia at the end of life, was launched in January. Set up to provide specialist advice, guidance and support for people with advanced dementia, their families and carers, Kirklees’s first Hospice Admiral Nurse talks about the importance of the new service.

Jacqueline Crowther became Kirkwood’s first Admiral Nurse in September 2016 and is already helping the Hospice to support people in Kirklees with dementia at the end of life.

As well as working with patients, their families and carers, Jacqueline is also helping to support local professionals to improve knowledge and skills in end of life and dementia care.

How important is it for us to embrace dementia care?

“Dementia is now acknowledged as a life-limiting illness, but people with dementia are not referred to palliative care services often enough. This means that many families living through a dementia diagnosis are not offered the same pain assessment and relief as people with other conditions.

“In order to improve, we need to embrace the importance of dementia care at the end of life.

We need to support health and social care professionals, as well as helping patients and families to access end of life services when and where they need them.”

What are your priorities as a Hospice Admiral Nurse?

“Both Kirkwood’s and my own priority is to improve access to specialist palliative care. One of the ways we will do this is by offering an open referral system so that families, carers, friends and @KirkwoodHospice

professionals can seek our support.

“I hope to see the service continue after its initial two year funding, so helping to achieve that is also a big priority.

“Finally, I think it is vitally important that I help to support and develop Hospice staff to improve their knowledge and skills in this area.”

Who are you working with in your Admiral Nurse role?

“I’m working closely with GPs and Community Nurses as well as Kirkwood’s Community Specialist Palliative Care Team, offering support and advice when it is needed, when a person’s dementia advances or when end of life approaches.”

About Jacqueline Crowther A Registered Mental Health Nurse, Jacqueline (pictured left) has many years of clinical experience working with people living with dementia and their carers. She has worked extensively in the field of research and education, completing a PhD at the University of Liverpool and co-ordinating a number of dementia research studies.

The Midnight Memory Walk is back on Saturday 24th June! As we celebrate Kirkwood Hospice’s 30th Birthday, 2017 is set to be our biggest and best walk yet!

Beginning at the University of Huddersfield, we have a brand new six or ten mile circular route for you to take on this June at our biggest event of the year.

The Midnight Memory Walk begins with entertainment and registration at 10pm on Saturday 24th June, 2017. On the stroke of midnight, confetti cannons will pierce the night air to signal the start of the sponsored walk.

Early Bird Offer Don’t miss out on our special Early Bird price! Until 31st March, registration is just £12 per walker (£6 for walkers aged 16 and under).

After 31st March, the entry fee is £15 per person (£8 for walkers aged 16 and under).

Ken Forster: 20th Century Troubadour!

Ken Forster, who attends Drop-in at our Support & Therapy Centre, is a man with an astonishing musical pedigree! For the best part of his adult life - as Ken McLaine - he has worked as a professional singer in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Fiji, delivering superb and original performances of the latest popular songs in the ever-changing world of musical entertainment.

Having lived in New Zealand from the age of three, Ken’s initial musical influences were The Beatles, The Hollies and Crosby, Stills & Nash and their amazing harmonies. His first serious gig was fronting a band in Auckland and by 1967 he had signed with an agency, given up his day job and turned professional.

In 1968, he accepted an offer to perform in Australia on the Leagues Clubs circuit. TV and radio appearances then followed, leading to even more work for Ken and his duo, The Debonairs.

Soon they became household names throughout the country.

An opportunity to try his luck in the UK in 1971 resulted in work on luxury cruises throughout the Mediterranean. He also formed a four-piece band, playing gigs at Wakefield Theatre and Batley Variety Club, supporting name acts such as Morecambe & Wise, Roger Whittaker and pop group The Fortunes.

Returning to New Zealand in 1977, his work with three and four-piece bands maintained his reputation as one of the country’s

premier vocalists.

After a brief period working in the UK, he returned to New Zealand in 1987 and a residency at a famous dinner-dance venue in Auckland.

Fiji was Ken’s next port of call, where he landed three weeks of solo work at a luxury hotel, enjoying good wines and food and a chauffeur-driven car at his beck and call.

In 2002, it was time for Ken to retire, but he never lost his enthusiasm and love of music.

Unfortunately, he is now unable to perform, but his music lives on in the form of an 18-track CD, available from the Hospice for £3.50, with all proceeds going to Kirkwood funds.

Celebrating 30 Years of Care 2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of Kirkwood Hospice. To celebrate, the Hospice team is organising a range of special events and projects which we hope will capture the imagination of the general public.

Our milestone year also gives us an opportunity to reach out to the local community to change the way people understand hospices.

As a charity, Kirkwood Hospice exists to support people at what is often the most difficult time of their lives; not just those with a life-limiting illness, but family members, carers and those important to them.

However, due to misconceptions about hospices and the support on offer to people with lifelimiting illnesses, many who could access care and support are not currently seeking out Hospice services. Kirkwood’s Chief Executive, Michael Crowther, is determined to change that in our anniversary year.

He says: “In our 30th year, we want to celebrate the impact Kirkwood has had on people’s lives and ensure access to our services is not considered to be limited by condition, age, location, ethnic group, orientation or any other issue.

“Kirkwood’s aim is to care for people who are affected by a life-limiting illness and those close to them. This can mean anything from providing care in a person’s final days, to offering advice and support over months or even years.

“This support can take many forms, from accessing emotional or spiritual care through counselling to advice on medicines and symptom control. The Hospice provides services committed to

enabling people to live the best quality of life possible.

“We will use our anniversary to dispel some of the misconceptions that surround hospice care and to make sure that more people benefit from the care and support we provide in the future.”

In order to achieve this goal, Kirkwood needs the support of people across Kirklees, who we hope will get involved to help challenge some of these misconceptions.

the word so that we can reach people who may need our support, but aren’t sure what we can offer to support them.”

As part of the celebrations, the Kirkwood team is also working hard on a number of exciting new initiatives this year.

“Events will play a big part in Kirkwood’s 30th Anniversary.” said Michael. “There are lots of activities planned that will help us to celebrate in 2017, with all of our fundraising activities taking on a 30th Anniversary theme. There are some exciting announcements to look out for in the coming months, so watch this space!”

Help us with our Market Research As part of our 30th Anniversary celebrations, Kirkwood is keen to understand what the general public knows about the services we offer. We need your help to find this out and to discover how we can improve the way we share information with you in the future.

Kirkwood will be carrying out a 30th Anniversary consultation exercise across the whole of Kirklees over the next two months to help us understand what people know about the different services we offer and consider how they would like to learn about them and access them in the future.

As part of this process, we are undertaking research to help us review some of the exciting changes that are going on across the country in relation to hospice and palliative care services. We are also looking at how other

As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary, it is never far from all our minds the key role our Support Groups played in bringing the idea of a Hospice for the people of Kirklees to fruition.

For many years before the Hospice opened its doors to the local community, Support Group volunteers dedicated their time and energy to fundraising for the building and fitting out of the Hospice.

Their continued enthusiasm and support over more than three decades has not only contributed toward the ongoing funding of the Hospice, but has also helped Kirkwood to extend its reach into many communities across Kirklees.

Everyone in the Kirkwood community wishes to express their enormous thanks to all our Support Groups, past and present. They are very much part of the foundations of Kirkwood; if it wasn’t for their hard work and dedication, the Hospice would not be here today!

New uniforms for Kirkwood’s Community Team For families being visited at home, it can be confusing as to who is providing the support.

To help overcome any misunderstanding, Kirkwood has launched a brand new uniform for its Community Specialist Palliative Care Team.

Kirkwood Hospice’s Community Specialist Palliative Care Team cover the whole of the Kirklees area, helping to improve patients’ quality of life through good symptom control, emotional and family support.

Despite this, the team believe it can be confusing for people being visited at home, as nurses in some hospitals and in other areas are supported by Macmillan Cancer Support.

Unlike in other areas, it is Kirkwood Hospice that provide

and pay for specialist palliative care nurses in Kirklees.

To help overcome any confusion, Kirkwood launched a brand new uniform for the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team earlier this year.

Community Services Manager, Andrew Gammon, hopes the new uniforms will increase awareness of the service in Kirklees.

He said: “We want our specialist nurses to have a strong identity and to make it clear that we are from Kirkwood.”

Andrew is also keen to reassure the public that at Kirkwood Hospice, confidentiality is key.

“The new uniform is designed to be discreet, with ‘Kirkwood’ and our logo only embroidered on the polo shirt. When visiting a person at home, the team don’t advertise being from Kirkwood on any outer clothing or on their transport.”

During Make a Will Month, participating solicitors across Kirklees have kindly agreed to offer their will-writing services for a reduced rate - £120 (plus VAT) for single wills or £200 (plus VAT) for joint or mirror wills. They will also donate half of their fee to Kirkwood.

Make a Will Month covers basic wills only. If your requirements are more complex, your solicitor will inform you of the cost of this additional work and you can then decide whether you wish to proceed.

Have you got time for Dignity?

To mark national Dignity Day, Kirkwood hosted a special ‘Digni-Tea’ event at the Hospice in February.

At Kirkwood, we are aware that ‘dignity’ means different things to different people, so we asked people to drop in for an afternoon tea with a twist.

As part of our Digni-Tea event, we asked people to let us know what ‘dignity’ means to them by hanging a personal note on our tree.

Digni-Tea Day also gave Kirkwood patients the opportunity to try out some of the relaxing therapies and services on offer, and to unwind with some treats and themed games. A wordsearch, completed by both patients and volunteers, encompassed key themes, such

as empowerment, independence and privacy.

For Therapy Assistant, Jinette Lambe, the event was about encouraging patients and visitors to find out more about services and to use the Hospice’s public spaces.

She said: “People can often feel isolated on the In-Patient Unit, so we try to encourage them to use our communal areas and to get a sense of normality back.

“Where possible, we try to help people to set goals, no matter how small they might seem, so being able to use these areas can be a boost for many.”

Celebrate someone special this Summer Now in its fourth year, our Sunflower Memories Appeal is a beautiful way to celebrate the life of someone you love.

In return for a donation, we will write the name of your special person on a striking sunflower plaque. Your sunflower will then be ‘planted’ in the Hospice gardens along with many others, forming a lovely carpet of yellow blooms.

Good coffee for a great cause at Community Library In an exciting new venture, Kirkwood has teamed up with the Denby Dale Community Library Project to launch a brand new café and gift shop at the recently opened Library in Denby Dale. Offering a wide range of teas, coffees and sweet treats, as well as a great range of gifts, Kirkwood hopes that the new library will become the hub of the village.

Our Support & Therapy Team is here to offer advice on a whole range of issues and can help those with a life-limiting illness to gain confidence and increase their sense of well-being.

Alongside Day Therapy service, we also offer Drop-In Days every Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am – 5.30pm (Monday at the Rosewood Centre). You can simply drop-in at any time without an appointment.

Patients, families and carers are all welcome to visit.
