Kingswood House School presents

Book by David Greig

Music by Marc Shaiman

Lyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl

Songs from the motion picture by Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International at The Epsom Playhouse Wednesday 29th January 2025 1:30 & 7:30pm

Both children and adults at KHS will use lots of words to describe Kingswood House. But one word rises above all others: believe. Our belief system is to believe in children. We know it works, because to believe is to have hope, and to have hope is the key to being happy.

Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is such a wonderful reminder of the values we hold dear here at Kingswood House. Despite tough times, Charlie’s kindness, resilience and optimism shine through—just like we encourage in our pupils every day! His honesty, love for his family and curiosity about the world make him the perfect role model, showing us all that with a good heart and a little determination, anything is possible. Doesn’t he sound like someone who’d fit right in at Kingswood House School?

Willy Wonka and Charlie

Hello, I’m Oscar and I am in Year 10. This will be my very first production and it has been a shock to the system in a good way. I was very lucky to get a really good part in the production because I didn't think I would get it. I am playing Willy Wonka! I am enjoying the play and I like how it developed - how it looks like a proper show and I like how the ensemble are really good with all the songs and all the main cast are really good actors. I regret saying no to the Lion King but I am very happy to be in this production.

Hello I’m Hugo and I am in Year 8. This is my first production, and I play Charlie. My favourite part about playing this character is the songs I get to sing, especially my first solo, A letter from Charlie Bucket! My favourite moment during the show rehearsals was watching all the characters get killed, especially the Mike Teevee song, Vidiots, which is amazing and funny looking at the puppets of the Mikeys and hearing the actors for them doing high pitched voices. I think the performing arts of KHS are so special because of all the positivity the teachers have shown us and how they urged us on no matter how hard it was to learn lines for the songs, as well as how much of their time they put into teaching us like giving up their Saturdays for Saturday rehearsals. I'm very glad all of you have come to watch this show and I hope you enjoy it very much. I would also like to thank the teachers and my family for helping with my part of the play.

Some thoughts from our fabulous ensemble...

One good thing about being in the ensemble is that you always have some form of action whether that be on stage or behind. The amazing thing that people get out of the ensemble is a great sense of teamwork which you attain through working relentlessly at the different steps of choreography, singing and stage movement (of which there are many!). However, perhaps one of the great benefits of joining the production is the friends you make along the way. I was in last year’s wonderful production of The Lion King so was quickly ushered in to do this year’s and having now done both of these shows I have developed a passion for the theatrical arts here at Kingswood House. This year we have become stronger a bigger band, a new theatre, longer show time and the wonderful addition of our debut director Ms Lavey. My favourite moment of the play is a tough one to choose as they are all fabulous, but I might have to say the Nutroom scene and song as it is hilarious and fun to be in. The show has been a great experience overall and you will all really enjoy it.

Ben (Year 8)

I love being a Gum Dropping Diva because it has given me an opportunity to develop my skills as a dancer. This year, during the rehearsal process, I have enjoyed that we have had some freedom of putting our own ideas into some of the dances - It is nice to feel trusted and see our ideas being used. I have made more friends across different year groups this year and our drama community is so special. Rehearsals are fun as we always have a good time and I feel confident in what we are doing. The production has really grown my confidence as a performer and I can’t wait for next year already. Everyone thinks getting a main role is so important but without an ensemble it wouldn’t be as magical as they always brings energy and a bubbly atmosphere to the stage. I love how in this year's production, we have so many special moments where we are all together onstage creating the magic.

Tilly (Year 8)

We have loved the production this year! Charlie is a classic story and we can’t wait to tell it. We have so many favourite songs that we are part of! We have enjoyed learning new songs, both singing and dancing. It’s been lots of fun. One of our favourite songs is Vidiot’s – It is so fun to be able to become a robot and we like the music. It makes us feel energetic and we want the audience to enjoy it too. We love being Oompa Loompa’s as we tell the characters off and ‘tear them apart’. Look out for the end of Act 1 where we use torches It looks so cool! We hope you enjoy the show and already can’t wait till next year’s production.

Zayn and Maye (Year 6)

To our Year 11 leavers, this is your golden ticket to a bright and exciting future. Like Charlie stepping into the chocolate factory, your journey is just beginning, and we know it will be filled with endless opportunities, sweet success, and colourful adventures. Thank you for filling our hearts with joy and inspiration. We wish you the very best as you take the next step in your amazing story.

Year 11 Cast

I am Arlo Saywell. I play the character Mr Beauregarde. I like the upbeat careless lifestyle Mr.B has. This has been a great experience for my last one with Kingswood House and my favourite part of the show is my character's last moments on stage where my last lines are the same expression. The productions are special to me because I get to spend lots of time with my friends, and the fact that when you're acting you're someone else and not yourself.

My name is Avaneesh. I have really enjoyed working with KHS productions as the role of the hilarious Mrs. Gloop in my fourth production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. When playing this character, I mostly enjoyed just recreating the sheer craziness of her personality and speaking in the wacky accent I got to put on for her too! I had a truly incredible time performing in this show and my favourite moment (in my unbiased opinion) was definitely either performing the song More of Him To Love or messing around with the characters in Pure Imagination! In general, drama at KHS has been so enriching because it allowed me to fully express myself in the most creative ways possible and enabled me to become whoever I wanted to be. I want to thank all of you for watching and enjoying this performance and I think that it’s bittersweet that it’s my last KHS production. But I might return someday. Who knows…

I am Theo Jenkins, in Year 11. In the play, my character is Cherry Sundae: the newsreporter who interviews the parents and children. My favourite part about acting in the school play is getting to act as a character using my interpretation. Thank you for coming to see the show.

Hello, I'm Conor, I'm in Year 11 and this will be my 4th and final production at Kingswood House, I play two characters in the play: Grandpa George and The Chief Oompa-Loompa. I really enjoy playing George because he might not have the longest of lines, but comes out with witty and hilarious comments that will surely make some of the audience laugh. I also enjoy playing the Chief Oompa-Loompa because of how in charge he is and also the fact that I’m allowed to shout and blow my whistle. My favourite moment in the play is the song "Auf Wiedersehen Augustus Gloop." I love taking part in the KHS productions because doing drama in general is what I love. I hope you all enjoy the show.

Hello, my name is Ethan and I play the part of Grandpa Joe and I am Charlie's grandfather. As I play an important role I need to learn a lot of lines which can be frustrating sometimes but it is all worth it when I get the chance to go onto stage and it is the best feeling to get a round of applause from the audience. We sometimes had to come in on the weekend which was annoying, but when I got to school I didn't regret it as I did live acting with my friends around me. Sadly, it is my last year of Kingswood House and I will not be able to do the production anymore but I have had the best time doing it so I would like to say thank you to all the teachers for letting me be a part of it.

I am Henry Treanor, I am in Year 11 and this will be my fourth production at Kingswood House School. I am playing Mr Teavee, father of twins, Mike and Mikey Teavee. My character is an energetic dad who doesn’t have control over his children. I like how my character has moments where he pops out of nowhere and says comedic lines (especially ones that adults can relate to as looking after children can be hard work). I have never played a character like this in a production before, so this will be a nice challenge for me. The best part of being in the school’s productions is having the opportunity to be there with my friends and make new friends across all year groups. My favorite scene is my song in Act 1, That little man of mine. It's chaotic and I love the moment when my sons do a trick in the air, I hope the audience will love it too.

A Few Words from the Production Team

As the new Head of Drama at Kingswood House, since stepping into this role, I have been delighted to work with a large cast full of talented and dedicated young individuals who have helped us bring this vision of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ to light. They have constantly inspired me with their passion for performance and dramatic imagination and have led much of what you see on stage.

The pupils have worked tirelessly, pouring their energy and enthusiasm into every rehearsal alongside juggling the usual demands of school. We have performers from Year 6 up to Year 11 and their commitment and growth throughout this process has been extraordinary; I could not be more proud of what they have achieved and now bring to this show.

I wished to create a show that draws us into a nostalgic, sweet, wonderful world that reminds us not to underestimate how far being a good person can get you in life. I wanted this production to be not just a brilliant performance, but a celebration of our pupils’ own creativity and passion bringing their different roles to life in this vibrant and joyful fantasy.

My heartfelt thanks goes out to all the cast, staff and parents who have committed to the show utilising, for the first time, the public, professional space of Epsom Playhouse. - this production would not have been possible without you. Kingswood House is so much more than a school; it is a community and this production is a testament to the strength of that community and how we all endeavour to nurture talent, celebrate success, and create something truly special. I hope today’s performances leave you smiling, reflecting, and, above all, proud of the remarkable students we have.

Miss Lavey

A Note on Choreography…

My involvement in the show has been wide ranging and has brought me great pleasure outside the Maths classroom! It is always a challenge to fill any theatrical space with movement and dance to enhance the acting performance, but our pupils have taken to my direction with relish and no fear of failure, resulting in some thrilling group performances. The ensemble have learned an impressive number of songs and dances - watch out for Vidiots as their final big number! Quite literally, some of the cast have thrown themselves into, and off, stage equipment as I have asked them to do without batting an eyelid. This production of Charlie is fun and wholesome and lively just how it should be!

It has been wonderful to have Darcie, one of our pupils in Year 10, be part of our production this year, as she has brought her dance enthusiasm and ideas to some of our choreographed numbers. She is a member of Ambition Dance School, Epsom and regularly trains with them and was in the Leatherhead Theatre panto this past season. I have welcomed her input and it has been delightful to see her confidence blossom as she has led on certain aspects with my tutelage - look out for the Gum Dropping Diva troupe in all their sassy glory!

Musical Notes on the Production

There are a variety of exciting and fabulous musical numbers in this show. There are the old favourites from the original movie that you will instantly recognise, along with some new pieces written especially for this musical production version. This show gives us everything from the sweet, poignant “Letter from Charlie Bucket” to the full chorus singing the finale of Act 1 –“It Must Be Believed To Be Seen”.

Be sure to listen out for the yodelling from Augustus Gloop and his mother, and be amazed by the Oompa Loompas in Act 2!
