Landscape art has always been a prominent fixture in our gallery and over our many years in business, it is safe to say that we have represented some of the finest living American landscape painters in the country. This is why we jumped at the chance to represent Jay Moore when the opportunity arose just a couple of years ago.

Growing up in Colorado, Jay’s adolescence was filled with days spent fishing, camping, swimming and absorbing all that nature has to offer. This bond with the great outdoors formed early and became deeply rooted. Today, his thorough knowledge and understanding of the landscape infuses his work with a subtle but accurate authenticity and a strong sense of place.

Jay has devoted much of the past year to prepare this newest collection of work for our show. Among the offerings are paintings from his usual haunts in his home state of Colorado, but also works inspired by Glacier National Park, the Arizona Sonoran desert and seascapes from Hawaii to the California coast.

With ever growing industrialization and urbanization, is it any wonder that we seek to escape the concrete jungle and return to nature’s open spaces to restore our spirit. I recall a museum article I once read on the history of the landscape genre, and one line in particular has stuck with me since. “The landscape continues to be a subject that artists turn to when contemplating the ways we relate to the places where we live and the impact we as humans have on the land.”

As you view this new collection of landscape works by Jay Moore, perhaps you will be reminded of times spent outdoors, hiking a favorite trail or simply sitting quietly by a high mountain stream. These paintings are a firm testament to Jay’s ability to capture both the subtleties and the vastness of our great American landscapes.

SUNRISE ON ST. MARY LAKE, OIL ON LINEN, 30 X 40 INCHES, $17,000 I started out this morning in Glacier National Park in the pre-dawn darkness trying to get to the top of Logan pass at daybreak. Well along the way I saw this view and was stopped in my tracks. I stood there, along with a group of photographers, awestruck as the rising sun unveiled the scene.

MARCH SHADOWS, OIL ON LINEN, 20 X 40 INCHES, $13,000 I love to paint snow because of all of the different colors that are in the sunlit areas as well as the reflected light. You have to paint from life to see these subtleties. A camera is not much help on this subject.

PINNACLE PEAK BLOSSOMS, OIL ON LINEN, 28 X 22 INCHES, $12,000

LAGUNA MORNING, OIL ON LINEN, 24 X 18 INCHES, $8,500

This is a popular hike on the north end of Scottsdale, Arizona. When you get off the road and a mile or two into the desert during the springtime, you can really see up close all of the variety of blossoms. If it has been a wet winter and spring, the desert really comes alive, like it did the year of this painting.

There is a reason that so many artists have been drawn to the Laguna Coast for the past 100 years. It truly is a beautiful place. Early morning, the cliffs light up in such a way that it looks like the color is actually reflecting off the rock. I did a plein air painting of this scene, and from life, the sunlit cliff reflected very brightly into the water. That is what drew me in to paint it.

A GLANCE AT AUTUMN, OIL ON LINEN, 24 X 18 INCHES, $8,500 I have painted fall river scenes many times, but never just looking straight across the river. This perspective reminds me of fly fishing just as I am about to wade in to the water.

SOUTH FORK OF THE FLATHEAD RIVER, OIL ON LINEN, 26 X 40 INCHES, $15,000 I fell in love with this river when I was 13 years old on a camping trip. My buddy and I returned to the same spot in August of 2016, nearly 40 years after our first visit. We jumped in, just like when we were kids.

WAILEA, OIL ON LINEN, 18 X 24 INCHES, $8,500 Hawaii has been a favorite place on earth for our family and we have been fortunate to be able to return many times. Wailea beach is a special place for us and I trust for many others who have been there.

SUNSET IN LAGUNA, OIL ON LINEN, 30 X 40 INCHES, $17,000 I had never painted a scene looking directly into the sun, but I wanted to capture how the sun actually lit up the humidity in the atmosphere.

I thought about how Sanford Gifford, one of the leading members of the Hudson River School, was able to pull off the effect.

CLEAN, CLEAR AND PURE, OIL ON CANVAS, 24 X 36 INCHES, $13,500 One of my favorite things to do is to hike to high mountain lakes. This is Taggert Lake in Grand Teton National Park, but rather than make it a specific location, I just wanted to focus on how you can look right through the water to the landscape of logs and rock at the bottom of the lake.

J AY M O O RE Jay Moore grew up in Evergreen, Colorado, spending nearly every waking moment outdoors absorbing the nuances and subtleties of nature. “Spending so much time outdoors,” he says, “you get in tune with nature’s rhythms. What the temperature is, when rain is imminent, what month it is by the water level in a stream. Once you understand it on that level then you can interpret it a lot better.”

He graduated at the top of his class from the Colorado Institute of Art and worked in graphic design and illustration for several years. It was a plein air painting workshop with master landscape painter Clyde Aspevig that convinced him to concentrate full-time on painting.

Moore is a modern-day naturalist, more at home amongst the elements, observing the natural world. The artist’s years spent exploring the Colorado highlands have given him a keen eye for the subtleties of the great outdoors. He can look at a patch of snow on the ground and tell you what month it is. He can even tell, often to the minute, when rain will fall by looking at the cloud patterns in the sky. Moore’s artistic focus is portraying the grandeur of the American West.

“As an artist, a painting is like a conversation: I hear what the terrain says to me and respond on canvas,” says Moore.

Reflecting on this newest collection of paintings, Moore notes, I am very excited about this show because it will include paintings from my home state of Colorado as well as works from explorations in the past year to Glacier National Park, the California Coast, and Hawaii. I am broadening out and finding whole new subject matter that is very inspiring.”

Jay Moore is a regular exhibitor at major museum shows including Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum and Masters of the American West at the Autry National Center. His work is in the collections of the Denver Art Museum and the Pioneer Museum in Colorado Springs as well as many corporate and private collections. In 2015 he was the recipient of the Eiteljorg Museum’s Victor Higgins Award of Distinction for the Best Overall Body of Work.
