An Artist from the West The art of Cynthia Rigden
C
ynthia Rigden grew up surrounded by horses and cattle on a ranch that has belonged to her family since 1902. Her roots in Arizona and the West are deep, but she does not consider herself a “western artist; rather, she is an artist who comes from the West. Rigden believes her long association with horses and cattle gives her an edge in portraying them. She now manages the family ranch, where she raises Longhorn and Longhorn-cross cattle. Rigden studied art at Arizona State University, and attended a summer session in Florence, Italy, studying graphic arts and art history. She’s shown at the Prix de West for more than 20 years, and is a member of the American Academy of Equine Art.
