CLUB OFFICER DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMME COMMENCES RECENT years have seen a high level of change at officer level in clubs throughout the county. Time was when a change of officer, especially that of chairman or secretary, was the exception rather than the rule in most clubs but all that has changed. Officers now tend to commit to the club for two or three years and hand over the reins to someone else. Another major change in recent times is the huge increase in female participation at executive level in clubs, particularly at

secretary level and even last year there were two females elected chairpersons of their clubs. Of course change is a good thing and brings a new vibrancy and fresh ideas with it, however, too much change at the one time can see an erosion of experience that can be very difficult to rectify. Running most clubs now is akin to running a small business and indeed the financial balance sheet of many clubs would be the envy of many medium businesses. Many new officers are thrown in at the deep end despite numerous offers and promises of support given at the AGM and have to learn to sink or swim in a very short time. There is help at hand of course and each year, training is provided by the County Board for all officers, but particularly new officers. The Games Development Administrators are now also trained to identify such requirements within clubs while the County Development Officer, Tim Murphy, also has a key role to play. Indeed, Árd Stiúrthoir CLG, Padraig Duffy, has highlighted that a key challenge facing the Association is the recruitment and training of officers at club level. This year, as part of a new national initiative, the format of delivery of the club officer training will be slightly different. Essentially there will be four modules involved in delivering this programme to principal officers in each club.
