READERS were clamouring to get their hands on a copy of Killarney artist Martin Carey’s first book The Haha on Saturday. Martin, who is resident cartoonist with Killarney Advertiser, was in demand at the unveiling of the new publication at Killarney Library. Officiating at the launch were the Healy-Rae brothers, Deputies Michael and Danny, who themselves feature in the book. Martin, from Kilcummin, has always had a passion for art and will be known to many locally for his stunning watercolour paintings. Now his cartoons have won him another whole legion of fans both in print and online, particularly in the past few months. His family were among those congratulating Martin, including his wife Tina and daughters Nicola, Hazel and Holly. Also wishing Martin well were his colleagues from his day job at Killarney Railway Station as well as his former teacher at Presentation Monastery National School, Councillor Michael Gleeson. The Haha, which was designed by Ticketyboo Design & Print at Killarney Advertiser, features a whole host of eye-catching, humorous and thoughtprovoking cartoons and would make the perfect Christmas present. It is on sale throughout Killarney, in Eason, O’Connor’s Newsagents, Eagers, Kerry GAA Store in Killarney Outlet Centre, Bricin, Serendipity and Muckross Gift Shop. It retails at €9.99. Martin will also be selling it online through Facebook (martincareyart) and Etsy.
Keep the wolves from the door this Christmas WITH Christmas being just around the corner, an exciting and wonderful time for families, but for many it can be a time of stress and financial strain. Chapter 23 Kerry Credit Unions has teamed up with independent financial advisory organisation MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service) to produce their “Keep the Wolves from the Door” a Christmas Survival Guide. Chapter 23 Credit Unions Marketing Committee Chairperson and Killarney Credit Union staff member, Helen Courtney Power noted that the guide “highlights the different source of credit available from moneylenders, personal loans, credit card debt and high interest store credit”. Jerry Doyle, Kerry MABS Co-Ordinator, said: “MABS is delighted to be working with credit unions in Kerry on this Keep the Wolves from the Door initiative. MABS is a government funded service but operate independently of government departments, the HSE, credit unions, banks, etc.” Copies of the guide are available at Killarney Credit Union branches, MABS, local shops and businesses and will be distributed to local households in the coming weeks.
