With all the kidzootd team having little ones, we’re always on the lookout for places to go with the kids. We came across a brilliant page on Instagram @familyfuninbrum and being fellow brummies it was great to see so many activities we could actually try out! We spoke with Kate to find out the story behind Family Fun in Brum and to find out the TOP TEN cheapest or Free places to take kids. "So, with the family ticket, that’s just £110 please. These were the words that inspired me to create Family Fun in Brum. Being a mother of two young boys who have energy to burn and love finding new and exciting places to explore has brought me so much joy; sure it can be exhausting, but I love getting out into Birmingham to inspire and excite their inquisitive minds, as well as escaping the bomb site that is our living room. We are very lucky to have so many exciting attractions right on our doorstep, however these can soon add up. Family fun in Brum is a place for families who are looking for free and affordable fun in Birmingham. We know how important it is to stay fit and active, and we also know how challenging it can be to stay motivated to do so! To get us back on track from the fitness slack, we seeked some inspiration and tips from Instagram fitness mama blogger @charity.grace With her involving the whole family we had to get the full scope and took to a Q&A to find out more!

Q1) So after having a good stalk of your Instagram account @charity.grace please tell us how it all started? It all began when I was adjusting as a new mom. I wanted to find a way to get back in shape but with two little kids in tow (one a fresh new baby!) there was no way I was making it to a gym. So I started doing yoga at home. I chose yoga because it was slow and gentle and I didn’t have to talk myself into getting up the energy to do it! I actually looked forward to it. Best part is...my kids started watching me then doing it with me! I thought it was cute so I recorded it and posted it to my gram. Next thing you know a couple of the vids went viral! Q2) You seem to be such a fabulous free spirit. As a mother of two children what qualities of yours would you love to pass on to them?
Q7) Your YouTube channel is full of more tips for family fitness. Do you think there should be more family fitness social clubs? If you attend any yourself, can you please share the details? Absolutely! I think being able to do things as a family is one of the coolest most fulfilling things ever. I also feel that I reason why a lot of moms have trouble committing to fitness is because a lot of times it’s really hard to set aside time just for yourself on a regular day. So by combining fitness and family it becomes a lot more accessible for moms and creates healthy habits for kids that will last through their life time! I use to regularly attend a moms yoga group which met outside a cafe once a week and I made tons of great friends and got to work out all while our kids played and enjoyed the outside fresh air. Q8) For fun: Describe yourself as a smoothie using 3 fruits :)
Aw thank you so much! One of my biggest wishes is that my kids will always pursue their dreams and passions whatever they may be. I feel that if I do the same, they will be inspired to stay true to themselves, work hard, and accomplish their goals as well!
Hmm...it would probably be banana (sweet), blueberry (cause BLUE duh!), and something strange like a dragon fruit (because it’s unique and little exotic) What’s your alter ego’s mermaid name?
Q3) We love how you include your children in your fitness videos and refer to your daughter as your little yogi buddy! Do you have any tips for others on how they can involve their children when it comes to keeping fit ? I think kids learn best by example! They see me having fun and enjoying my yoga time and they want to participate as well. It’s always a little more playtime then it is strictly working out. I let them crawl on me, go for piggy back rides, and play their favorite music. It’s not always as relaxing but they are enjoying it and we are spending time together and getting active! Q4) What are your favourite stores to shop for active wear for you and the kids?
Celestina Blue Dragon -I guess she’s pretty hardcore What colour hair will you rock next? I always pretend like I’m gonna try something new but I always come back to doing blue! It’s so much a part of me now it doesn’t feel right without it! If I did eventually try a completely different color maybe I would go for something peachy pink? Where’s the one place in the world you would love to visit and why? Oh man! I can’t pick just one! I literally have a bucket list and I’m working on checking it off! but right now my top 3 I’m working on now would be Iceland, Thailand, and Australia.
Top of my list is definitely Flexi Lexi Fitness (City loves their little yoga tops and mommy and me matching leggings). Q5) I have never actually taken a yoga class! What do you feel is the biggest benefit of taking up yoga? So many benefits! I wish more people would try it! For one it’s completely non-threatening lol. As in, it’s easy to start because you can go as slow as you want and ease into it. I enjoy it because even after a long exhausting day I still look forward to that time. I think the practice is especially great for moms and postpartum because a lot of the flows concentrate on long lean muscles and tightening the core (perfect for targeting the hard to reach areas after birth). Staying flexible, learning breathing techniques, and practicing inversions can help cure back aches (just ask my husband!), headaches, and is great for the digestion and calming the mind. I think the biggest benefit would have to be self-care. Doing yoga will clear your thoughts and give your body the gentle movement it needs. Plus you can pretty much do it anywhere, anytime, in any space. Q6) How do you keep yourself motivated to stay consistent with working out throughout the year? I always set goals for myself! Whether they’re a year from now or a week it’s always something. Like "by next week I want to be able to hold my handstand for 1 minute" or "next year I will compete on American Ninja Warrior". This way every day I wake up I know I have something I’m working towards!

New Brand Small Stories Would you leave your job to follow your passion and start a new venture? That’s hard decision making, but new horizons can come in little shapes and sizes! Meet Jo, the founder of the NEW children’s brand – Small Stories. We get so excited seeing new brands emerge onto the market, as we just can’t wait to see what else is coming to the ever expanding world of kid’s fashion. After instantly falling in love with Small Stories, we found out the BIG story behind it.
Kidzootd Magazine Q&A 1) Congratulations Jo, on the launch of your new brand Small Stories! We know your brand focuses on casual wear for kids ages 0-6years. Why did you choose this type of style to bring to market? My story begins when I became a new mother to my son Jack. I have a background in fashion and a love of design, so naturally as a new mum, I looked forward to a whole new world of children’s clothing to explore. But I found myself struggling to find cool, unique, modern clothes that were also functional and of high quality, without the designer price tags. So, I left my job of 15 years as a London fashion buyer to create my own children’s-wear label for all those other mums like me, who are looking for something a bit different and will be the envy of other parents wanting to know what brand their child is wearing. 2) Can you describe in a sentence the first collection of Small Stories? A unique collection of timeless, ethically produced, artistically inspired clothing for little ones aged 0-6. 3) We have taken a look at the Small Stories collection and have picked a few of our favourites items. What products did you love designing the most? I absolutely love the quilted bombers we have done in our first collection in painted dot print - pink and burgundy, and then the khaki and blue fish print which I see as super gender neutral. I think they really offer something different with their distinctive bespoke prints, quilted detail and contrast colour jersey linings. I also obviously loved designing the rucksacks that will be coming in end October as this is where my experience comes in from, being an accessories buyer.

I feel like a lot of prints could transcend into so many different product categories. It would be great to collaborate with a cool UK swimwear brand, as our prints are very distinctive paired with our bright colour combinations, especially the prints we have done for SS19. 7) Do you have any special offers to tell us about throughout the rest of the year? We have the rucksacks coming in end October that we are super excited about. We also have lots of giveaways and collaborations with super cool bloggers in the pipeline where we will be offering lots of exciting offers. 8) What can we expect to see in the next collection? Small Stories will continue to create luxury artistically expressed garments designed to make children feel empowered and inspired. An aesthetic that transcends fashion; classic, timeless, genderless in style, unique and identifiable. The prints for SS19 will be playful, eclectic, bold yet sophisticated creating timeless keepsakes.

We travelled to London to watch the Mini Mode show which takes place during London Fashion Week and is exclusively for children and children’s fashion. The show featured an incredible cast of young talent including a fabulous live host @inspiringvanessa, rapper @olivia.raps, singer @josietruemaisey and DJ @maisiekateyoung. Not forgetting of course all of the gorgeous mini models adorned in the latest childrenswear from new and established brands based all over the world. It really was a fabulous event, a chance for kids and kid-fashion to take a merited place in LFW and an opportunity for the industry’s gifted designers to showcase their work. For every brand, getting your product to market can be a challenge and trade shows are a great way to highlight your business.
Kidzootd caught up Carly Gledhill and Nicole Frobusch from Dot to Dot London, the biannual design-led tradeshow for independent children’s brands who are one of our new partners, to give you an insight into the world of trade.
Q1) With Dot to Dot London being a trade show for independent kids fashion brands, what are the top qualities you look for when selecting brands to showcase? The top qualities we are looking for are originality, transparency in production, environmental consideration, innovation and design-led presentation. Q2) We have seen the children’s fashion industry develop significantly over recent years. What do you think is the leading contribution to this? We have seen a lot of parent entrepreneurs starting new brands, social media is a huge tool for sharing design and allowing parents to find new brands and dress their children individually. A lot of the larger designers are following suit and launching children’s collections. Q3) For any new brand coming to the market, how important are trade shows and what are the benefits of being involved? It’s very important for new brands to be seen by the industry and taking part in a trade show gives them more weight and the opportunity to be taken seriously by international buyers and press. Trade shows also give the chance to meet like minded designers and brands and collaborate and learn. Brands do need to put the effort in the network and prepare for the show to get the most from them. If the brands put in the leg work it can be very rewarding, open many doors and be a good return on financial investment. Q4) How do brands apply to participate your trade show? Brands need to email images of their collection along with a short biography or description of the brands philosophy

The Family Q&A ‘My family is something quite wonderful, with them life is always colourful!’ Mukhtar
We were lucky enough to speak to the wonderfully inspirational ’The Family UK’ who’s online presence is one with many fans and supporters for all the right reasons. Here’s what Mrs Mom had to tell us:
Q1) Hello Mr Dad and Mrs Mom with a HUGE following base on your instagram account @thefamily.uk of over 560k followers, please tell us your story and how the account went viral on social media? My husband and I were both originally from Malaysia. We come from a mixed background. We have been living in the UK for almost 20 years. All three of our children were born and bred here in the UK. We’re just like any other normal family. I, Mrs Mom, have been ill for quite some time now, but when my health got to its worst last year, I decided to turn my own Instagram into our family Instagram. That’s when my husband stepped up and started sharing more posts of the kids with our family and friends back home in Malaysia. At first, he was just capturing moments with the kids to divert their attention from my illness. He tried to create fun activities with the kids daily. One of their favourite activities would be cooking with our little daughter, Fatimah, and she loved to pretend to have her own show while her dad took videos of her! Her first video that went viral was of her cooking banana fritters with Mr Dad. People loved the fact that although she was only 3 years old at the time, she was very confident when she spoke. That’s why we always say that she was BORN TO TALK! And, she was known by her knack for using multiple languages when speaking. People found it unique! That’s not the only video that went viral. After that, many of her other videos went viral too! Every day, people would be waiting to watch her latest videos. Then, on 11th February 2018, she created her own word, GAPOEVER, which is a mix of Malay and English which means ‘whatever’! This was trending for many days on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The term is widely used until today. It was even included in the script for a theatre show, television, radio etc.
It was a blessing that people loved her so much! When we collaborated with a clothing brand back in June, all three dresses that she wore were sold out only a few hours after we posted them on social media. We were surprised by the amount of influence she had over people, being only a little girl! Recently, she just got nominated for an award for the Most Popular Social Media Personality! She was over the moon to know that she was the only 4-year-old girl among the other 10 adults in that category. However, not only Fatimah went viral. Her brothers, Mukhtar and Ali, were trending several times too. Mukhtar is known for his writing skills. He has been actively writing and blogging since 2015. Till date, his blog has been read by 128 countries and counting! He’s going to publish his first book very soon! Ali too is loved by many. He is known for his cuteness and randomness! Our kids are truly blessed to be surrounded by so many loving and supportive people from all around the world!

Q2) On your Instagram account you feature brilliant videos and stories of your 3 adorable children ranging from motivational speeches and academic achievements to fashion blogs. How do you manage to stay active on social media between everyday normal life?

It’s a family Instagram, so we all share one account, which makes it easier for us to manage. Most of what we share is based on our daily life. When it comes to writing, most of it will be Mukhtar’s work. Fatimah loves recording videos. She will ask her dad to record even a simple conversation over a cup of milk before bedtime! As for Ali, he will just tag along with Fatimah. If there are any photoshoots to be done, we will normally take the kids out on weekends and school holidays, so the kids can have fun while we take pictures of them.
Well of course, with his passion for writing, Mukhtar says he would love to become a bestselling author! Fatimah currently wants to have her own business, but still wants to keep her precious ‘The Fatimah Show’. She dreams of having her own show on TV. Ali, given his love for animals, says he wants to be a zookeeper. His dream would be to live with elephants!
