Welcome to

Dear Kids,

I hope you’re all working hard at school. But we all need a break don’t we? So, as usual, this month’s Kidzine is full of interesting and exciting things! For example, do you know the different between a Solar Eclipse and a Lunar Eclipse? Read all about it in the Science Club. Our Travel Diaries take you on a trip to Madrid, the capital city of Spain and our Great Mind section introduces you to the lady who invented the paper bag! The Animal Kingdom tells you all you need to know about frogs; like how you can tell from their eyes whether they are male or female! You can also learn all there is to know about bananas – did you know a single banana is called a finger? Each segment has a quiz so don’t forget to test your knowledge afterwards. This month’s Crafty Corner has a special Halloween theme. Maybe you can take a picture of your handmade creation – after your Say Cheeze photography lesson, obviously! You can also keep up-to-date with the latest books, apps, gadgets movies and music charts – and make sure you stay healthy by following the advice in the Kidzine Clinic. All this, plus puzzles galore! Enjoy yourselves. See you next month. JAMEEL ARIF

Finding the Sugar Sugar is often called “white poison” and for good reason too. Whether you’re trying to lose weight or take up a healthier lifestyle, cutting back on sugar helps a lot. But how do you figure what foods have less sugar? This fun science experiment tries the sugar test on soda, fruit juice, organic fruit juice and fresh squeezed fruit juice.

Solar Eclipse vs. Lunar Eclipse

An eclipse is an obscuring of light caused by the passage of one object between a source of light and another object.

Solar Eclipse

13

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the sun and the earth, partially or fully blocking the sun. There are two to five solar eclipses every year.

Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth moves between the sun and the moon. There are at least two lunar eclipses every year.

Think About It!

During a solar eclipse the shadow of the moon covers up the sun. Do you think that when it happens the whole earth will be in darkness? Why or why not? www.kidzine.net

He Named Me Malala – Inspirational, Educational and Eye-Opening

16

A must-see for today’s youth. He Named Me Malala, is a documentary about Malala Yousafzai who takes huge risks to stand up for girls’ rights to receive an education in Pakistan. When Malala is 15 years old she makes public speeches about how she doesn’t think the Taliban is doing the right thing by blocking girls from getting an education. One morning on the way to school, members of the Taliban board Malala’s school bus, ask for her by name and try to assassinate her. Malala is shot on the left side of her head and she miraculously survives. After her recovery, she continues to put her own life in danger by speaking out against the Taliban. Fast forward to 2014, at age 17, Malala is the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

When it comes to sequels, few have been as longed for as "Finding Dory," the next installment following Disney/ Pixar's heartwarming 2003 film, "Finding Nemo."

Avengers: Infinity War Marvel already has two more "Avengers" movies on the calendar: "Avengers: Infinity War Part I" opens May 2018 followed by "Avengers: Infinity War Part 2" in May 2019.

Book that 2019 movie date now

Release dates for 'The Incredibles 2' and 'Toy Story 4'

The good news is that "The Incredibles 2" is happening. The bad news is we have to wait until 2019. Disney announced release dates for some of its projects, and Variety put together a list. And while Pixar's "Cars 3" will be released in June 2017, fans eagerly anticipating "Toy Story 4" and "The Incredibles 2" will have a longer wait. "Toy Story 4" has reportedly been moved back from June 2017 to June 2018, with "The Incredibles 2" set for June 2019. You read that correctly: 2019.

Disney to make prosthetics for kids Disney have announced that they're going to make a range of bionic hands to make kids feel like superheroes. The hands will be designed with Marvel, Star Wars and Frozen in mind. They want to release them at a low cost level so that kids around the world can afford them. October 2015

Exercise your eyes! Reading, writing, using a computer, watching TV or staring at a small screen on a video game can all make your eyes feel dry and tired. Some doctors think that too much close work can even lead to short sightedness (myopia [say: my-oh-peea]), which means that you can only see things clearly when you are up close to them. You can help your eyes by exercising them. Here are a few things you can try. Every 20 minutes let your eyes take a break.

Look away from the page or screen and slowly blink your eyes 10 times.

Look to the left then to the right 2 times with your eyes closed then do the same looking up and down. Move your eyes slowly.

Close your eyes and slowly roll your eyeballs round clockwise 2 times then 2 times anti clockwise.

Look at something further away and focus on it while you count to 10 then look at the screen or page while you count to 10. Do this 5 times.

The rest of your body needs a break too. Close your eyes and take 10 slow deep breaths holding the air in for 10 before breathing out. Stand up and move around a bit. Roll your shoulders, bend sideways and slowly roll your head around. If you have problems seeing clearly your doctor or optometrist (eye doctor) may give you some other exercises which may help.

Amazing Eye Facts Babies are born color blind. Their color perception develops gradually, usually reaching a full ability to recognize and distinguish colors at about 5 months.

Why did pirates wear eye patches? It was actually a trick to help them see better. The eye with the patch was used to see in the dark below deck, while the uncovered eye was used for bright light above deck.

Our irises have over 256 unique characteristics. Compare that to fingerprints, which only have about 40. This is why many new security measures have iris scans instead of fingerprint scans.

Shark corneas are amazingly similar to humans’. They’re close enough that shark corneas have been used for human transplant surgery. You blink less when you're reading, which is why your eyes get tired quickly.

A Taste of Your Own Medicine

A

hmed had always been a prankster. He loved playing tricks on people, making them jump with fright or tricking them with silly games. His little brother was usually the butt of his jokes and often ran to his parents in tears at Ahmed’s latest antic. “Don’t be so mean to your brother” his mom would say after wiping away Omar’s tears.

On one occasion, Ahmed had placed a huge plastic spider on Omar’s pillow. It was the first thing Omar saw when he opened his eyes in the morning and he screamed so loud their pet dog ran under the bed for cover! Another time, he hid behind the bedroom door with a scary monster mask on his face and jumped out on Omar when he walked in. October 2015

He roared like a lion and chased his brother all the way down the stairs and out into the garden before taking the mask off. Only then did Omar stop running, but tears of fright were still streaming down his face. It wasn’t just his brother who bore the brunt of his jokes. One day he put a dead mouse under his teacher’s desk and he tied his uncle’s shoe laces together when he fell asleep in the chair. He also removed all of the batteries from the clocks in his friend’s house and convinced him it must have been a ghost! It was his father who decided enough was enough and together with his wife and Omar, they hatched a plan to get their own back on Ahmed. Ahmed was always last at the breakfast table. His mom and dad and Omar had already eaten their cereal when Ahmed arrived in the kitchen. Omar was so excited about the trick, he could barely stop himself from laughing. As his parents sipped their coffee and Omar drank his orange juice, Ahmed emptied the cereal box into a bowl. But instead of cornflakes, his bowl was full of dried leaves, twigs and creepy crawlies from the garden. He jumped backwards and screeched at the sight of his unexpected breakfast and Omar roared with laughter.

the channel, she changed it back again. It was Omar’s giggling that finally gave the game away and Ahmed threw the gadget on the floor before stomping off in temper. Ahmed stayed in his room the whole evening, refusing to come downstairs. Eventually, his father went up to talk to him. “You can’t expect to play tricks on people and get away with it Ahmed. Sooner or later, they will get fed up of your pranks and will pay you back with pranks of their own. It’s important for you to know how it feels to be on the receiving end for a change. It’s called getting a taste of your own medicine”. Ahmed felt ashamed. He had never stopped to think how his brother felt; he just thought it was funny to make him cry. It made him feel big and strong. “There are better ways to feel big and strong” his father said. “You should help Omar with his homework instead; show him how knowledgeable you are and how helpful you can be. That’s far more rewarding than laughing at someone else’s expense. And next time you’re at your uncle’s house, why not offer to wash his car or take his dog for a walk? It will earn you far more respect than if you tie his shoelaces together”.

“That’s disgusting!” he shouted. “I suppose you all think that’s funny?!” Embarrassed at being the subject of ridicule, he stormed out of the kitchen and left the house, slamming the front door behind him.

Ahmed began to realise how immature he had been and was embarrassed by his stupid behaviour. “There are other ways of having fun” his father went on to say. “The key is to laugh with other people rather than at them”.

Later, after school, the two boys were watching TV. Ahmed was still sulking and was annoyingly switching between channels with the remote control. Unbeknown to him, his mom was behind him with another remote control and every time he changed

When his father left the room, Ahmed emptied his box of plastic insects into the waste bin and went downstairs to make everyone a cup of tea. He would apologise to Omar at the same time and see if he wanted any help with his homework. www.kidzine.net

Banana

Benefits and Facts Bananas are the most popular fruit in the world - we eat more bananas than apples and oranges put together!

They are actually a human invention from 5000 BC. They were originally full of seeds but because people are picky eaters, banana hybrids were created, making them seed-free. There are still tiny seeds in bananas but they serve no function in banana reproduction. Bananas are mentioned in literature as far back as the 6th century BC.

Healthy Eating The key to healthy eating is to enjoy a variety of nutritious foods from each of the 5 food groups. Below are the 5 food groups on a plate, in the proportion that you should be eating them throughout your day. If you eat a variety of foods from each of these groups, your body will receive all the nutrients and vitamins it needs to function. The five food groups are:

Dairy: the foods in this group are excellent sources of calcium, which is important for strong, healthy bones. Not many other foods in our diet contain as much calcium as dairy foods. Fruit: fruit provides vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and many phytonutrients (nutrients naturally present in plants), that help your body stay healthy. Grain (cereal) foods: always choose wholegrain and/or high fibre varieties of breads, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, etc. Refined grain products (such as cakes or biscuits) can be high in added sugar, fat and sodium. 32

Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds: our body uses the protein we eat to make specialised chemicals such as haemoglobin and adrenalin. Protein also builds, maintains, and repairs the tissues in our body. Muscles and organs (such as your heart) are made of protein. Vegetables, legumes and beans: vegetables should make up a large part of your daily food intake and should be encouraged at every meal (including snack times). They provide vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and phytonutrients (nutrients naturally present in plants) to help your body stay healthy.

Nutrients in food When talking about food, you’ll often hear people refer to the word nutrients. Is the food full of nutrients? Is it a nutrient-rich food? Are you getting your recommended daily serves of nutrients?

What are nutrients and why are they good for you?

Nutrients are the substances in food that our bodies process to enable it to function. Your nutrient requirements are influenced by factors including your age, growth stage and activity. Nutrients are so small that they can’t be seen by the naked eye. Nutrients can generally be broken onto two categories:

macronutrients – carbohydrates, protein, fats; and

micronutrients – vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, vitamin C. Nowadays there are many nutrient poor foods available – this means they don’t contain much nutrition that your body needs to function. Rather, the food is full of energy (kilojoules) but it’s not nutritional. This means that the food will provide your body with energy (kilojoules) so you won’t feel hungry, but it’s void of other essential nutrients that your body needs to function.

Vitamins Vitamins and minerals are substances that are found in foods we eat. Your body needs them to work properly, so you grow and develop just like you should. When it comes to vitamins, each one has a special role to play. For example:

Vitamin D in milk helps your bones. Vitamin A in carrots helps you see at night. Vitamin C in oranges helps your body heal if you get a cut. Vitamin B in whole grains help your body make energy from food.

Vitamins Feed Your Needs

34

Your body is one powerful machine, capable of doing all sorts of things by itself. But when it comes to vitamins, it can use some help. That's where food comes in. Your body is able to get the vitamins it needs from the foods you eat because different foods contain different vitamins. The key is to eat different foods to get an assortment of vitamins. Though some kids take a daily vitamin, most kids don't need one if they're eating a variety of healthy foods.

Vitamin A This vitamin plays a really big part in eyesight. It's great for night vision. Vitamin A helps you see in color, too, from the brightest yellow to the darkest purple. In addition, it helps your body fight infections by boosting your immune system. Which foods are rich in vitamin A? milk fortified with vitamin A, liver orange fruits and vegetables (like cantaloupe, carrots, sweet potatoes) dark green leafy vegetables (like kale, collards, spinach)

The B Vitamins There's more than one B vitamin. Here's the list: B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid. Whew — that's quite a group! The B vitamins are important in metabolic (say: meh-tuh-BAH-lik) activity — this means that they help make energy and set it free when your body needs it. So the next time you're running to third base, thank those B vitamins. This group of vitamins is also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body. Every part of your body needs oxygen to work properly, so these B vitamins have a really important job. Which foods are rich in vitamin B? whole grains, such as wheat and oats fish and seafood poultry and meats eggs dairy products, like milk and yogurt leafy green vegetables beans and peas October 2015

Vitamin C This vitamin is important for keeping body tissues, such as gums, bones, and blood vessels in good shape. C is also key if you get a cut or wound because it helps you heal. This vitamin also helps your body resist infection. This means that even though you can't always avoid getting sick, vitamin C makes it a little harder for your body to become infected with an illness. Which foods are rich in vitamin C? citrus fruits, like oranges cantaloupe strawberries tomatoes broccoli cabbage kiwi fruit sweet red peppers

Vitamin E Everybody needs E. This hard-working vitamin protects your cells and tissues from damage. It is also important for the health of red blood cells. Which foods are rich in vitamin E? whole grains, such as wheat and oats wheat germ leafy green vegetables vegetable oils like sunflower, canola, and olive egg yolks nuts and seeds

Vitamin D No bones about it . . . vitamin D is the vitamin you need for strong bones! It's also great for forming strong teeth. Vitamin D even lends a hand to an important mineral — it helps your body absorb the amount of calcium it needs. Vitamin D is made in the skin when exposed to sunlight, or you can get it from the foods you eat. Which foods are rich in vitamin D? milk fortified with vitamin D fish egg yolks liver fortified cereal

Vitamin K Vitamin K is the clotmaster! Remember the last time you got a cut? Your blood did something special called clotting. This is when certain cells in your blood act like glue and stick together at the surface of the cut to help stop the bleeding. Which foods are rich in vitamin K? leafy green vegetables dairy products, like milk and yogurt broccoli soybean oil When your body gets this vitamin and the other ones it needs, you'll be feeling A-OK!

Margaret Knight A Lady with Bags of Ideas!

Margaret Knight was born in Maine, USA in 1938 and was raised by her widowed mother.

As a child, she was known as “Mattie”. Unlike most little girls, she never played with dolls. Instead, she would make toys for her brothers. In 1849, Margaret went to work in a cotton mill. There was a device at the mill called a “shuttle” which carried thread back and forth across a textile loom. One day, the thread broke and the shuttle flew off, striking a young boy and killing him.

48

Margaret was very upset and set about designing a safety mechanism making it impossible for the shuttle to leave the loom. The device was successful and before long, every new machine was fitted with one. This undoubtedly saved many lives but because Margaret was so young, she never thought about patenting the device. As a result, she was never credited for her invention. She would not make the same mistake twice. Later in life, she invented a machine that could make flat-bottomed paper bags. She started by building a miniature wooden prototype in her home. However, to be able to cope with mass production, the machine needed to be made of metal. She asked a man named Charles Annan to help her build a full size metal machine. Unfortunately, he then claimed the design as his own! Charles Annan argued that no woman would be clever enough to design such a machine and that the invention was obviously his. However, during the court case, Margaret took her wooden prototype to court and explained in detail how every gear and lever worked. This was enough to convince the court that it was in fact Margaret who had designed the machine, and not Charles Annan. October 2015

Knight's machine automatically folded and glued the bottom of paper bags. She won the case in 1871 and was awarded with the patent. She was the second woman in history to hold a US patent. Over 100 years later, he design is still being used to make flat-bottomed paper bags! In total, Margaret Knight was credited with around 90 inventions and received 26 patents. These included a rotary engine, a shoe cutting machine and a waterproof skirt protector.

When she died, Margaret was described as a "female Edison after the famous inventor who invented the electric light bulb. 49

Hello my stars, my amazing kids…… This month’s quote is a very loving and touching one. It’s the love your mum has for you!

66

“There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it!”

All parents love their kids endlessly, yet a mum’s love is so special and different! No-one loves you the way your mum does. No matter how many arguments you go through and how harsh she can be at times, there is no doubt that she loves you the most. With her love you grow, you become stronger and you become smarter. You are so special to your mum; she loves you and wants you to be the best person in the world. She wants you to be happy, successful and healthy. Never doubt this. Try to absorb as much love as you can, and give her all the love and respect she deserves. Listen to her words carefully, follow her rules, obey her orders and learn from her experiences; and always remember that you’re so very special to her. And remember, being rude to your mum means that you are weak - not strong at all! Mums create tomorrow’s men and women – that’s you - our future generation! Tip: Hug your mum now and say “I Love you Mum!”

“The Mysterious Mathematician.” Ask anyone taking geometry and usually the first thing they learn about is something called the Pythagorean Theorem. It is a theorem in geometry which states that in a right triangle the area of the square on the hypotenuse (side opposite right angle) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares of the two sides, or perhaps simpler as a2+b2=c2. What is really amazing is how this theorem bears his name when most works written about him didn’t exist until years after his death. Quite mysterious! Of the fragments of information about Pythagoras, we know he was well travelled and studied multiple fields. He learned geometry form the Egyptians, arithmetic form the Phoenicians, and astronomy from the Chaldeans. Pythagoras was quite taken by shapes and also by music. According to legend, Pythagoras was walking by some blacksmiths one day and heard the sounds of their hammers and thought how beautiful the sounds were. He deduced that these sounds must be caused by some scientific law that should be easy to represent mathematically. His followers were called the Pythagoreans and were quite mysterious as well. The Pythagoreans were split into two groups; mathematikoi (teachers) and akousmatikoi (listeners). In their school the first concept of paying for education was created. Up until this point in history, education had largely been free. When your parents have to make a tuition payment for your school, tell them they can thank Pythagoras! October 2015

Focal Lock Dear Kids,

I hope you are enjoying taking photos with your camera and you are benefiting from the monthly tips I share with you through this magazine. This month we will learn one more important technique - how to use focal lock. While most cameras do well auto focusing upon subjects, there are times when you end up with shots that are out of focus because the camera doesn’t know what the main subject is. We will learn how to press the shutter halfway down to focus and then to frame the shot while still holding it down – then you’ll have a skill that you’ll use forever! It’s a very simple technique and something that virtually every digital camera has the ability to do.

Here’s what you do: 70

Pose your subject. When framing your subject put the central point of your frame on the point that you want to focus upon (the face of a person is generally the best point). With the subject’s face in the centre of your image half press down on the shutter button (not fully). This will tell the camera to focus on that point. Without letting go of the shutter (it should still be half depressed) move your camera to frame your shot as you want it (the person’s face doesn’t need to be centered now). Once you’ve got the framing right press the shutter the rest of the way and the shot will be taken with the right focusing even though the centre of your image might not be the person’s face. This technique is not just useful for taking photos of people when they’re not central in your shots but can also be used in many other types of photography. For example in Macro shots when you want to place the insect or flower that you’re photographing off centre you might want to use focal lock. Similarly if you were taking a landscape shot but wanted to focus upon a house in the foreground that was off centre, rather than the horizon, you’d use this technique. This technique is one that most people know but it’s something that beginners should master in the early days of their photography, as it’s something you’ll use constantly. It might take a little practice but after a while it will become second nature to you. So, try this new technique and let me know how it improves your photos. October 2015

Madrid is the capital city of Spain. It has an estimated population of 3.3 million people and is the highest capital city in Europe at 650 meters above sea level. The name Madrid comes from the Arabic ‘magerit’ which means 'place of many streams'.

It is 2989 miles (or 4809 kilometers) from Kuwait to Madrid and would take a minimum of 8 hours and 45 minutes to fly there.

76

Don’t forget to change your Dinars into Euros. You would fly into Madrid-Barajas Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Spain. The main language spoken in Madrid is Spanish. English is also widely spoken in tourist areas and you may also hear Catalan, Galician and Basque.

The Spanish National flag is called "la Rojigualda". It is a horizontal tri-colour of red, yellow and red, with the Spanish coat of arms off-centered in the double-width yellow band, towards the hoist. Legend says that the colours of the Spanish flag are based on the bullfight arena - the red representing the blood and the yellow the sand of the arena.

Once in Madrid, you may choose to travel by bus, taxi or metro. The metro system consists of 12 lines and more than 200 stations. It is the second largest metro network in Europe. October 2015

People of Madrid (Madrillenos) are often called “gatos” which means “cats”. According to historical legend, during the Arabic invasion, a soldier climbed the outer walls of the city with the agility of a cat.

TRAVEL S DIARIE

The National Anthem of Spain is one of only four in the world without lyrics.

Madrid enjoys more cloudless days (250 days per year) than almost any other city in Europe. It gets particularly hot in the summer and has an average of 431mm of rain each year. The official symbol of Madrid is the bear. It stands on its hind legs eating berries from the madroño tree. It symbolizes the city’s growth and represents the possession and ownership of the wood necessary for the construction of buildings. It is known as ‘El Oso y El Madrono’ which means ‘the bear and the strawberry tree’. The well known ‘Flamenco’ dance originated in Madrid. However, Flamenco is more than just a dance; it is combination of guitar playing and singing as well as dancing.

The red carnation is the national flower of Spain.

Two of the most distinctive buildings in Madrid are known as the Puerta de Europa. These two identical office buildings lean towards each other at a fifteen degree angle and contribute to one of the most unique skylines in the world.

The Royal Palace of Madrid is filled with many rare treasures including weapons, paintings, sculptures and important royal belongings. It is also the only place in the world where visitors can find a complete Stradivarius string quartet.

Real Madrid play their football at the Bernabeu Stadium. The club, founded in 1902, is one of the most famous football clubs in the world. The stadium currently seats nearly 80,000 people, although at one time the seating capacity was 120,000!

Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas (more commonly called ‘Las Ventas’) is regarded by many as the home of bullfighting.

You can learn all about the art of bullfighting at the Bullfighting Museum (Museo Taurino). This gives visitors an insight into its history and changing trends in dressing style. It also displays the costume worn by Manolete, a young bullfighter who was gored to death in Linares's bullring. October 2015

The Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid makes intricate tapestries but they are very expensive to buy.

Madrid has three major art galleries which are known as the Golden Triangle. They consist of the Prado, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. A selection of world-famous art is housed in the three galleries.

Quiz When in Madrid, don’t forget to try ‘tortilla de patata’. In its simple form this potato omelette is just potatoes and eggs but you can add onions, pepper or even tuna.

You could visit the ‘flea market’ instead. The ‘El Rastro’ sells everything from second hand junk to rare paintings.

VIDEO GAMES

ARE THEY BAD FOR OUR KIDS? In this modern world of technology, we’re probably all guilty of spending too much time on our smartphone, tablet, laptop or other such device. Admittedly, they are useful tools when it comes to accessing information but I’m guessing most of us use them for social purposes far more than we do for business or education. The same can be said for our children, particularly when we consider the number of computer games and other forms of on-line entertainment available at the touch of a button.

There’s no denying the fact that computer and video games are a guaranteed method of keeping our kids quiet. They can entertain themselves for hours with the thousands of games currently available to choose from. But is this lengthy exposure to computerized entertainment really good for our kids? Some may argue it can improve hand-eye coordination or, in some instances, problemsolving skills. Others believe it may enhance their memory and their ability to process October 2015

information or calculate math. On the other hand, certain games can encourage aggressive, violent or anti-social behaviour as well as having a negative effect on their school work. It goes without saying that we need to be aware of exactly what type of games our kids are playing. Some contain violence and strong language and are inappropriate for younger children so checking the ratings is essential. Kids often complain of neck or back ache after playing computer games. Others may suffer pain in their fingers, hands or wrists. Another common side effect is tired eyes or deteriorating eye sight. It is therefore recommended that screen time is limited to a maximum of two hours per day. This includes smartphones, computers, video games, tablets, even TV. Two hours may not sound a particularly long time but it’s important to encourage our kids to be active. Too long sitting indoors with no exercise is not healthy from either a physical or psychological point of view. It’s easy for kids to become overweight and lazy; and with little interaction with other kids, their social skills may also suffer. Encouraging them to play with friends or participate in sports is vital if they are to develop a healthy mind and body. Traditional board games may be considered old fashioned but they are a fun alternative to sitting solo in front of a computer screen. They encourage interaction - and laughter with other kids and should be considered as an alternative to video games. Similarly, toys, puzzles and kids’ magazines are recommended as healthy entertainment and are often much cheaper than today’s expensive video games. The aim of many video games is to beat everyone else and for those playing, this is the ultimate goal. Today’s sophisticated games require players to pay constant attention to the game. They do not involve working together or helping others and many believe that kids go on to adopt this selfish attitude in their daily lives. The games can also become an addiction so kids are constantly thinking about them. Even when they are not playing them, they are thinking only of getting home and returning to the game. They may even confuse reality with fantasy. Not only does this have a detrimental effect on their studies, it makes them pretty boring company as well. It’s a well known fact that kids copy their parents so it’s important to set a good example and practice what we preach. It’s no good telling them that prolonged use of their tablet or smartphone is bad for them if we then sit

staring at our own gadget all evening. We need to get involved with our kids and develop their social skills. Communicating with adults is another part of their learning process so we need to encourage conversation and get them talking. During a recent conversation with the CEO of a major insurance company, I learned the importance of teamwork; not just in the working environment but for those of school or university age. One job opportunity can result in the receipt of hundreds of resumes from hopeful candidates. Many will be rejected immediately for poor language or grammar, inadequate job skills or lack of qualifications. For those lucky enough to make it to the next stage, it’s often the personal details which determine whether or not they are invited for an interview. This is where teamwork is important. If the resume includes reference to some form of team activity, be it a member of a football team, handball team or even a drama group, chances are this candidate will be more successful than one with no such reference. It demonstrates a person’s ability to work as part of team, work towards a common goal and aim for success. A potential employer will certainly be more impressed by someone who is a member of a basketball team than by someone who boasts of reaching the highest level in a certain video game – unless of course the vacancy is for a video game designer! Competition for jobs can be fierce so it’s important to give our kids the edge and encourage them in any way we can. I accept that all kids are different and not everyone is good at sport, but there are other group activities that encourage team work and interaction. Why not join – or even create – a reading group? Reading can be just as isolating as video games but getting together with friends and discussing the characters or plot of a book can be an enjoyable and enlightening pastime. Cooking is another example. It may result in a messy kitchen but a group cookery session can be very rewarding as well as producing some delicious results. Whether we like it or not, video games, for the time being at least, are here to stay. They can be fun and entertaining and, if used in moderation, should not harm our kids’ health or prejudice their job prospects. The key, as with most things, is balance. Remember, there are countless alternatives to computerized entertainment; many of which involve conversation and laughter. And unlike video games, laughter is actually proven to be good for our health. www.kidzine.net
