The Pineapple The pineapple originated from South America but growth later spread to the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico.

The word 'pineapple' was recorded in 1398 to describe 'pine cones'. Pineapples were so called because they resembled the pine cone.

The explorer Christopher Columbus came across the pineapple in 1493 and took it back to Europe.

The fruit is not an apple or a pine - it is actually a berry!

During the 20th century, the pineapple symbolized hospitality. American Sea Captains placed the fruit outside their homes to signal to friends that they had returned from a voyage. The largest pineapple ever recorded was grown in Australia in 2011. It measured 32cm long 66cm wide and weighed a whopping 8.28kg! By 2009, the Philippines and Thailand were the top two producers of pineapples in the world, followed by Costa Rica. During growth, the pineapple plant produces over 200 flowers varying in color from lavender, to light purple, to red.

When selecting a pineapple, choose one which is free of soft spots, bruises and darkened ‘eyes’. These are signs of a damaged fruit or one which is past its prime.

To make your pineapple softer and juicier, keep it at room temperature for 1 or 2 days before cutting.

Many tropical countries sell pineapple at the roadside. It is also used as a welcome gift in the tropics.

The skins, core and ends of a pineapple are used to make other products such as vinegar and animal food.

Avoid eating unripe pineapples. Not only do they not taste very nice, they can also give you a sore throat! 26

The individual fruit segments of a pineapple interlock in two helices – 8 in one direction, 13 in the other.

The flesh and juice of pineapples are used in many cuisines throughout the world. It is widely used in Asian stir fry dishes as well as sweet and sour and as a pizza topping. It is also commonly used in fruit salads, ice cream and yogurt or in drinks such as cocktails or milk shakes.

What's a Bruise?

If you're an active kid - or are a little clumsy - you've probably had a bruise or two. But what are those funny-colored marks on your body, exactly? A bruise is also called a contusion (say: kun-TOO-zhun). Some people bruise easily, while others have tougher skin tissue. 32

How Do Bruises Happen?

Bruises form when the soft tissues of the body get bumped. When they do, small veins and capillaries (the tiniest blood vessels) under the skin sometimes break. Red blood cells leak out of these blood vessels. These red blood cells that collect under your skin cause that bluish, purplish, reddish, or blackish mark. That's where black-and-blue marks get their name - from their color under the skin. Bruises go through colorful changes as the body begins to heal itself. The color changes mean that your body is metabolizing (say: meh-TAB-oh-lye-zing), or breaking down, the blood cells in the skin. This is the process that your body goes through to repair itself. www.kidzine.net

The Phases of a Bruise Imagine a baseball hits you in the leg. Ouch! Your body will go through these phases: First, you'll probably have a bump that will look red or purplish and tender. The bump might swell from the blood collecting under the tissue.

After a couple of days, the bruise will look blue or even blackish. After 5 to 10 days, it may look greenish or even yellow. After 10 to 14 days, the bruise will most likely be a light brown, then get lighter and lighter as it fades away.

How Long Do Bruises Last?

Most bruises will disappear after 2 weeks, and some go away even sooner. If a bruise does not go away after 2 weeks, let your parent know. To help reduce swelling or the amount of bruising after an injury, apply a cold compress to the bruise for at least 10 minutes.

And be sure to wear a helmet and protective pads to help you avoid getting bruises!

Alfred Nobel Inventor of Dynamite Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator and armaments manufacturer famed for his invention of dynamite.

Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1833. He learned the basic principles of explosives from his father at a young age and at school, he excelled at chemistry and languages. In addition to his native tongue, he went on to become fluent in French, German, English and Russian. 48

In 1864, a shed used for the preparation of nitroglycerin, exploded at a factory in Stockholm, killing five people, including Nobel's younger brother. You will find the largest synagogue in Europe in Budapest. The Dohany Street Synagogue is the second largest in the world and can accommodate 3,000 worshipers. It is 44 meters high and covers an area of 2000 sq meters. The synagogue was built between 1854 and 1859.

Budapest Zoo is one of the oldest in the

world. It opened in 1865. The inventor of the 'biro' or ballpoint pen was Hungarian. Laszlo Jozsef Biro was born in Budapest in 1899. Perhaps you could buy a souvenir pen during your trip!

The northernmost holy place of Islam is in Budapest. It is the burial site of a Turkish dervish who came to Hungary during the Turkish invasion in the 16th century. He was honored as a holy man and after he died in 1541, his tomb became an Islamic sacred place and a site of pilgrimage. The chapel, built between 1543 and 1548, is one of the few remaining Turkish buildings in Budapest. Don't forget to try a typical Budapest dish before you leave - a bowl of goulash is a must!
