Ancient Human Ancestor "Little Foot" Debuts In South Africa

10

On December 6, Little Foot, the most complete skeleton of a human ancestor ever found, made its debut at the Hominin Vault at University of Witwatersrand's Evolutionary Studies Institute in Johannesburg, South Africa. The ancient fossil’s public unveiling ends a painstaking journey of discovery and assembling that began in 1994, when paleoanthropologist Ron Clarke stumbled upon fragments of four left foot bones while rummaging through a museum box. Convinced they were from the same hominin, or early human ancestor, the scientist decided to investigate further. Three years later, in 1997, he found new foot bones belonging to the same individual from the fossil trove of the university’s medical school. Believing there may be more, the researcher and his team headed to South Africa’s Sterkfontein cave system, where the bones had been unearthed. It was a slow, arduous, task that required the use of small, needle-like tools. Clarke, who likens the endeavor to “excavating a fluffy pastry out of concrete,” says, "The process required extremely careful excavation in the dark environment of the cave. Once the upwardfacing surfaces of the skeleton's bones were exposed, the breccia in which the undersides were still embedded had to be carefully undercut and removed in blocks for further cleaning in the lab.”

Little Inventors Brings Children's Imaginative Ideas To Life

Kids, whose vivid imaginations know few boundaries, frequently come up with invention ideas that range from life-changing to downright wacky. However, few see them come to life mainly because adults are not convinced of their practicality. That is about to change thanks to Little Inventors, an innovative project that connects aspiring inventors to manufacturers and artists who can help bring even the most impossible sounding contraption to life. The endeavor is the brainchild of Dominic Wilcox, a British artist and inventor, who is world-famous for his fun creations like GPS shoes that can find their way home and a cereal-serving head crane device. Wilcox, who was inspired to pursue inventing at a very young age by his tutor, is a firm believer that “we are all born creators” and thinks children’s ideas are just as valid as those of adults. The chain of events leading to the founding of Little Inventors can be traced back to a series of workshops held by Wilcox around his hometown of Sunderland, England in 2015. The 19 events, organized to encourage children aged 5-12 to sketch their ideas, were a huge success, attracting over 300 kids and resulting in more than 450 fun inventions. The designs were presented to a group of twentythree local artists and manufacturers who selected one idea and then worked alongside its young creator to bring it to life.

But it was well worth it. Little Foot, who was a female, is not just the first complete ancient adult skeleton found, but also the first with a complete leg and arm in one individual. In contrast, Little Foot’s more famous counterpart, Lucy, discovered in East Africa in 1974, is only 40 percent complete and lacks a head. The mammal, which belongs to the genus Australopithecus, had short arms and small hands, indicating she was more similar humans than apes. Assumed to be in her 30’s, Little Foot is believed to have died after falling into a sinkhole from a tree where she was sleeping. The researchers still need to investigate where she fits into the human family tree and her food preferences. Estimated to have lived on Earth 3.67 million years ago, Little Foot is the oldest human ancestor ever found in Southern Africa. She is not however the oldest. That honor goes to Ardi, a hominin that lived in Ethiopia 4.4 million years ago. But given that Little Foot is over 90 percent complete, she is far more valuable to researchers. The significance is not lost on Clarke, who proudly asserts, “Little Foot is one of the most remarkable fossil discoveries made in the history of human origins research.”

The resulting prototypes, showcased at the INVENTORS! Exhibition in an empty Sunderland storefront through January 2016, were a huge success both locally and globally. In September 2017, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, acquired five of the creations — a family scooter, a Liftolator (War Avoider), a shady lamp, a super fast tennis ball, and a high-five machine — to put on display for visitors to admire. California Home Transforms Into Winter Wonderland For The Holidays

For most Americans, the holiday season begins around Thanksgiving. However, for Kathy and Rombeiro and her dad, Edmundo, it starts in September, when they begin the laborious process of converting their Novato, California home into a winter wonderland. By the first Sunday of December, the ordinary suburban home is transformed into a magical “Christmas House,” complete with over 200,000 lights, fake snow, model trains, countless decorations and figurines, and even a real-life Santa Claus (Edmundo) on a sleigh. The catalyst for this 26-year-old joyful tradition can be traced back to Edmundo’s childhood. As a young boy growing up in São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores off the coast of Portugal, he had fond memories of helping his mother set up a Nativity Scene each Christmas. When Kathy was old enough, Edmundo, who moved to America 48 years ago, decided to start a similar holiday ritual with her. Initially, the decorations were just meant for the family and friends to enjoy. However, that changed in 1990 when Edmundo noticed a neighborhood couple admiring his handiwork. Kathy says, “Something inspired my dad. He asked the couple if they would like to see the decorations inside of the house, and there it all began. One couple turned into the second. A week went by, more people. The following year, we added another room, and from that point on our home started attracting thousands of people every year.” In 2016, the family welcomed a record 44,000 visitors (including 18 tour buses) during the holiday season.

While over a quarter of a century of curious strangers walking around the house would take its toll on most people, Kathy and Edmundo love the tradition and continue to add to the Christmas splendor each year. Now, along with the spectacular exterior, every room in the house, besides the master bedroom, brims with decorations. To help them with the increased work, the duo has recruited Kathy’s mother Mary Jo and cousin Tony Aguiar who are happy to pitch in for this joyous occasion. Though the decor of the first four rooms changes each year, visitors will always be treated to a model train room, an angel room, and one dedicated to a replica of Edmundo’s hometown in memory of Kathy’s grandmother, the inspiration behind this fun tradition. Scattered through the house are several Christmas trees, a lighted holiday village, and a variety of other intricate displays. While the decorations are certainly a draw, what makes a visit to the Rombeiro Christmas House memorable are the family members who greet each visitor with a smile and a candy cane. It is no wonder the family receives thousands of thank you notes from people all over the world each year! Though donations are accepted to help pay for the hefty electricity bill, there is no cost to visit this joyful house. Edmundo says, “Everyone is welcome. We open our hearts and arms, the way things are supposed to be. We just hope that we move people to have more love for each other.”

Sweden's Stunning ICEHOTEL Opens For The 28th Year While most hotels undergo makeovers, very few get upgraded as frequently as the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. Constructed entirely from a mixture of snow and ice, or “snice,” the structure has been rebuilt from the ground up every year since 1989, with each rendition more stunning than the previous. The 28th ICEHOTEL, which opened for business on December 15, is no exception. The seasonal hotel’s 19 intricately sculpted, thematic suites are the work of artists that have been carefully selected from over two hundred applicants from around the world. This year’s rooms feature fluffy cumulus clouds, a pair of astronauts, and even King Kong – all carved from “snice,” of course.

Each 290-square-foot (27-square-meter) suite sleeps between 2-4 guests, enabling couples and families to share a room. To ensure visitors are comfortable, in the below freezing –23 to –18 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures, the beds are covered in reindeer hides. Guests are also advised to wear thermal underwear and sleep inside the hotel-provided thermal sleeping bags. While there is a private changing room, the bathrooms and showers are located in the adjacent conventional hotel, which is open year-round. December 2017

Mountains of the World December 11th: International Mountain Day

Mountains stand on every continent on Earth—and even between some continents, far under the ocean. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a mountain range on the floor of the Atlantic. It stretches from north of Iceland almost all the way south to Antarctica.

12

The Eight Summits On each of the seven continents, one peak stands the tallest. Climbers call these the Seven Summits. However, if we consider Australasia a continent, then Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia would make the list. That gives us eight summits. Australasia includes New Zealand, New Guinea, the Indonesian archipelago (island chain), and islands in the area. Many climbers try to scale all eight summits.

Mountain Men

It took 14 years to finish carving the faces of four presidents into the rock of Mount Rushmore. That’s in the Black Hills of South Dakota. (The Black Hills are high enough to be called mountains.) The mountain bears the faces of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lincoln. After sculptor Gutzon Borglum died, his son, Lincoln, completed the project. Each face is 60 feet high. The noses alone are 20 feet long!

The Longest

The Andes are by far the longest mountain range on Earth. They stretch about 4,500 miles along the western edge of South America.

13

It may surprise you to learn that Antarctica is the most mountainous of all the continents. The tallest spot down there is Vinson Massif in the Ellsworth Mountains.

King of the Mountain

Mountains are holy places for people of many different religions. The ancient Greeks believed that Zeus was king of the gods. They thought he ruled from the top of Mount Olympus, which is the tallest mountain in Greece. It stands 9,577 high. December 2017

Mount Sinai is in Egypt. It is thought to be where Moses received the Ten Commandments.

The Tallest

14

Mount Everest, in Asia’s Himalayan range, is the world’s tallest mountain above sea level. And it keeps growing! Scientists say it rises about three to five millimeters a year. That means every climber who reaches the top sets a new altitude record.

That’s Odd

Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is in China. It is known for its odd-shaped rocks and pine trees, swirling mists, and hot springs. A long paved path lets people hike around its 72 peaks. December 2017

Turned to Stone

The Three Sisters in the Blue Mountains of Australia get their name from an Aboriginal legend: Three sisters fell in love with three men from a different tribe. When the couples were forbidden to marry, the two groups started fighting. In the heat of the battle, a medicine man turned the three sisters into rock to protect them. He died before he could reverse the spell.

Far Out

There are mountains on other planets, too. On Mars, a volcano called Olympus Mons is about three times taller than Mount Everest.

Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria and the second-most populated city in Australia. The people of Melbourne are called Melburnians.

It was founded by free settlers from the British Crown colony and named in 1837 in honour of the British Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.

It takes approximately 15 hours and 20 minutes to fly from Kuwait to Melbourne.

18

You will land at Melbourne Airport (also known as Tullamarine Airport).

Melbourne operates a contactless public transport system known as ‘myki’. This includes trains (Metro and V/Line), buses and trams and you will need to ‘touch-on’ and ‘touch-off’ at every entry and exit point.

Summer in Melbourne is December to February when temperatures are around 30 degrees C. Winter is June to August when it is cold, cloudy and wet. December 2017

Melbourne Town Hall is located in the central business district. It is topped by St. Alfred’s Tower which has a 2.44m diameter clock. The longest of its copper hands measures 1.19m long and weighs 8.85kg.

The Shrine of Remembrance is a war memorial built to honour the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I. It is one of the largest war memorials in Australia.

For something a bit different, visit Old Melbourne Gaol, the old prison on Russell Street. Some of Australia’s most notorious criminals were housed and executed here. It ceased operating as a prison in 1924 and is now a museum.

You should also pay a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It is the tallest and largest church in Australia. Building began in 1858 but was not completed until 1939. It is instantly recognizable by its central spire and two flanking towers.

You MUST take a trip to Phillip Island. The Penguin Parade is one of Australia’s most popular attractions. Each night at sunset you can see the world’s smallest penguins returning to shore after a day’s fishing. It’s a magical experience!

20

Phillip Island is also famous for its motor racing events and has its own Grand Prix circuit.

December 2017

If you time your trip right, you can experience the Melbourne Cup – one of the most famous horse racing events in the world!

You can’t visit Australia without enjoying a BBQ so head to the beach and cook some fish on those coals!

The national flag of Australia is a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper hoist quarter and a large seven-pointed star (the Commonwealth Star) in the lower hoist quarter. Five further white stars make up the ‘fly’ section of the flag.

Llamas are herbivorous. Grass is their staple diet.

They are a member of the camel family, although llamas have no hump.

They were first domesticated and used as pack animals around 5,000 years ago by Indians in the Peruvian highlands. 22

Llamas are still used for carrying heavy loads. However, if their load is too heavy they will lie down and spit (and sometimes kick their owner!) until the load is reduced.

They can carry 20%-30% of their body weight.

A male llama is called a sire, a female is called a dam, and a baby llama is called a cria. A group of llamas is known as a herd. December 2017

They are social animals and prefer to live in herds.

Their ears are long and curved inward, like a banana!

They are often mistaken for alpacas. The easiest way to tell them apart is by their ears – alpacas’ ears are much smaller.

Llamas use a variety of different methods to communicate. They use ear, tail and body postures and also have a range of vocal calls including hums and a shrill alarm.

The wool provided by llamas is lightweight, warm and luxurious. The fibres are fireproof making it popular with weavers and spinners.

23

They have excellent hearing and eyesight and a keen sense of smell.

December 2017

Llamas can be white, brown, grey, beige or black. The pattern of their coat also varies. Some are spotted, some are plain and others have varying patterns.

Unlike most animals that bite when agitated, llamas spit – so be careful if you disturb one!

Llamas, like camels, can survive for many weeks without water because they collect moisture from the food they eat.

Llama manure has almost no odour! In Peru, they burn dried llama poop and use it for fuel.

Predators of llamas are wild dogs and mountain lions.

In some countries, llamas are often used as guard animals to protect sheep and goats from coyotes.

Llamas usually live for around 20 years. They are relatively easy to train and are gentle and shy by nature. For this reason, llamas are becoming increasingly popular as pets.

Alessandro Volta Physicist, Chemist, Inventor and Pioneer of Electricity Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born in Como, Italy in 18 February 1745.

His father died when he was seven years old and he was educated at home by his uncle until the age of twelve.

26

He later developed a special talent for languages and learned English, German, French and Latin. In 1774 he became a professor of physics at the Royal School in Como and, a year later, improved the already invented ‘electrophorus’, a device that produced static electricity.

He promoted the electrophorus extensively. So much so, many people mistakenly believe he invented it! December 2017

Volta studied the chemistry of gases from 1776 to 1778 and discovered methane. He found methane at Lake Maggiore and devised experiments using the gas. GREAT MINDS

In 1779 he became a professor of experimental physics at the University of Pavia.

He also studied what is now known as electrical capacitance and developed separate means to study both electrical potential and charge. He discovered that for a given object, potential and charge are proportional. This is called Volta’s Law of Capacitance and resulted in the unit of electrical potential being named the volt. By 1791, Volta was one of Europe’s most recognized electrical scientists and was elected to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.

December 2017

27

In 1794 he was awarded the Royal Society’s top prize – the Copley Medal – for his contributions to scientific understanding of electricity.

He married Teresa Peregrini, an aristocratic lady from Como in 1794. They had three sons.

28

By 1800, he had developed the ‘voltaic pile’ which produced a steady stream of electricity and went on to announce his invention of the electric battery.

He became an associated member of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands in 1809 and was made a Count by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1810. December 2017

Volta retired in 1819 and continued living in Como, Italy. He died on 5th March 1827, aged 82 years. His remains are buried at his estate, Camnago Volta.

The jackfruit tree originates from South Asia but thrives anywhere with plenty of warmth and moisture. Jamaica and Brazil also produce large quantities of the fruit.

Apparently, the best jackfruit in the world is the ‘peniwaraka’ (honey jak) that comes from Sri Lanka.

30

Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. Large jackfruits can weigh up to 80 pounds and measure 36 inches long!

As many as 250 fruits can be produced by one tree in a single year.

December 2017

Ripe jackfruit is eaten as a fruit. However, unripe jackfruit is often used as a vegetable in curries and stews. When opened, the flesh is very aromatic. Its flavour is often described as a combination of mango, melon, papaya and banana.

When fully ripe, an unopened jackfruit has a strong, unpleasant odour similar to that of rotting onions!

‘Hard’ jackfruits are large with firm flesh. ‘Soft’ jackfruits are smaller with softer/sweeter flesh.

It is often mistaken for the durian fruit because it is similar in shape and size to the other exotic fruit.

The jackfruit tree is often referred to as a ‘wonder tree’ because every part of it is used. The fruits are used for food, the leaves are fed to livestock, the trunk and branches are used to make wood products and the roots are used for medicine. December 2017

31

Jackfruit is highly anti-oxidant and contains anti-ageing properties. It’s also high in fibre so helps the digestive system. Because it’s packed full of vitamins, it’s also good for our skin.

The roots from a jackfruit tree are said to aid asthma, diarrhoea and fever.

32

Palaces in Bali, Indonesia are made from jackwood. It is highly sought after due to its termite and fungus resistant properties.

One jackfruit can contain between 100 and 500 seeds.

QUESTIONS 1. What does peniwaraka mean? 2. The flavour is often described as a combination of which four fruits? 3. Why is jackwood highly sought after? 4. Which country has named jackfruit its national fruit? 5. Jackfruit is often mistaken for which other fruit? 6. How many fruits are produced by one tree per year? 7. My Lazy Cat

There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather by Linda Åkeson McGurk

Bringing Up Bébé meets Last Child in the Woods in this lively, insightful memoir about a mother who sets out to discover if the nature-centric parenting philosophy of her native Scandinavia holds the key to healthier, happier lives for her American children. When Swedish-born Linda McGurk moved to small-town Indiana with her American husband to start a family, she quickly realized that her outdoorsy ways were not the norm. In Sweden children play outside all year round, regardless of the weather, and letting young babies nap outside in freezing temperatures is not only common—it is a practice recommended by physicians.

by Christine Roussey Meet Boomer, a roly-poly cat. He’s always in a happy mood, and he’s the best friend of one little girl. But boy is Boomer lazy! From morning to night, Boomer can be found lounging around the house, snoring and snoozing. The little girl, on the other hand, is much too busy for a nap. She’s got judo, swimming, yoga, painting, rugby, and biking to do! She does not have a minute to herself, and she can’t be late! But one particularly jampacked morning, Boomer accidentally keeps the girl from getting out the door. Instead of panicking, she decides to take the day at Boomer’s pace for once. They spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the garden, and the girl is reminded how nice it is to slow down and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

Whooping Cough Whooping cough (pertussis) is an infection of the respiratory system caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It mainly affects babies younger than 6 months old who aren't yet protected by immunizations, and kids 11 to 18 years old whose immunity has started to fade.

36

Whooping cough causes severe coughing spells, which can sometimes end in a "whooping" sound when the child breathes in.

December 2017

Signs & Symptoms

CLINIC

The first symptoms of whooping cough are similar to those of a common cold:

After about 1 to 2 weeks, the dry, irritating cough evolves into coughing spells. During a coughing spell, which can last for more than a minute, a child may turn red or purple. At the end of a spell, the child may make the characteristic whooping sound when breathing in or may vomit. Between spells, the child usually feels well.

Contagiousness Pertussis is highly contagious. The bacteria spread from person to person through tiny drops of fluid from an infected person's nose or mouth. These may become airborne when the person sneezes, coughs, or laughs. Others then can become infected by inhaling the drops or getting the drops on their hands and then touching their mouths or noses. Infected people are most contagious during the earliest stages of the illness for up to about 2 weeks after the cough begins. Antibiotics shorten the period of contagiousness to 5 days following the start of antibiotic treatment.

38

Prevention Whooping cough can be prevented with the pertussis vaccine. An adult's immunity to whooping cough lessens over time, so getting vaccinated and protecting yourself against the infection also helps protect your infant or child from getting it. eople who live with or come into close contact with someone who has pertussis should receive antibiotics to prevent the spread of the disease, even if they've already been vaccinated against it. Young kids who have not received all five doses of the vaccine may need a booster dose if exposed to an infected family member. December 2017

When to see the Doctor Visit the doctor if you think that your child has whooping cough or has been exposed to someone with whooping cough, even if your child has already had all scheduled pertussis immunizations.

BUT versus THOUGH

BUT and THOUGH are conjunctions, words that connect two different ideas. "But" is used to introduce an idea that adds something to a previous idea and is different in some way. It's a more negative word and means something is more of a barrier than if you use “though.” "But" is generally in the center of a sentence, though it is often used to start one, which is incorrect. "But" is never used at the end of a sentence. It's always between the two ideas.

"Though" also connects two different ideas, to compare them, but it's a more up and happy word. Though is more positive. It's also a more formal word. “Though” makes you feel something is a challenge. “But” means something is more of a barrier "Though" can begin, end or be the middle of a sentence. When you put it at the end of the statement, both ideas need to be their own sentence

--I like vegetables, but I don't like carrots. 60

I like vegetables. But I don't like carrots. (incorrect, but often done.)

--Though I don't like carrots, I do like vegetables. I like vegetables, though I don't like carrots. I like vegetables. I don't like carrots, though.

Take this “though” statement and turn it into a “but” sentence. The computer is still on sale. I can't afford it, though. Take this “but” sentence and turn it into three “though” statements, using “though” at the front, the middle and the end.

I like haunted houses, but I am afraid of zombies. (Though at the beginning)__________________________________________________ (Though in the middle)____________________________________________________ (Though at the end)_______________________________________________________ December 2017
