From The Editor Hi Kids,

Welcome to the final issue of 2017. It’s been an amazing year for the team at Kidslife. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading the magazine as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it all together. A New Box of Crayons Story By: Judie Eberhardt Mandy loved to color. She would color for hours. The only problem for her was that the crayons she used were small, broken, or only dark colors. Mandy wanted some new crayons, but her mom told she had to use her allowance money to buy them. Mom had bought her new crayons at the beginning of school, but Mandy wanted the big box of 100 colors she had seen at the store. The crayons even had a sharpener at the back of the box that would keep her crayons looking like new.

8

They also had such great colors such as bright pink, lemon yellow, and jade green. I could color such great pictures Mandy thought to herself. Mandy went to her money box and counted her allowance money for the box of 100 crayons. She was $1.50 short. “Mom, are there any chores I can do to earn some extra money?” asked Mandy. “Why do you need extra money?” asked Mom. “There is a box of 100 crayons I want to buy,” said Mandy. Mom thought for a minute and said, “Well, you could pull the weeds from the flower beds out front.” “If you pull the weeds, I can give you fifty cents.” “I will still be a $1.00 short,” said Mandy. Mandy thought to herself, maybe I can walk the neighbor’s dogs for a few days and earn $1.00. Mandy went to her neighbor and asked if she could walk their dogs. “That would be great!” said Mrs. Johnson. The next day after school, Mandy went next door and took Mrs. Johnson’s poodles for a walk. The dogs, Libby and Lucy, were so cute, and Mandy was excited to earn the extra $1.00 she needed for her crayons. When Mandy returned from walking the dogs, Mrs. Johnson paid her the $1.00 she promised her. She had another surprise for Mandy. Mrs. Johnson said she was cleaning out some closets and found a new box of 100 crayons she had bought when she was teaching an art class at the local middle school. Mrs. Johnson never used them. She asked Mandy if she would be interested in taking the box of 100 crayons. “I would love them!” said Mandy. “Thank you so much!” “I’m glad someone can use them,” said Mrs. Johnson. “I forgot I even bought them.” Mandy left Mrs. Johnson’s house with not only an extra $1.00, but with a great new box of 100 crayons. Every time Mandy colored any pictures or did any artwork, she always thought how lucky she was to walk Mrs. Johnson’s dogs that day. January 2018

News Nutella Chaos In France

10

People in France love Nutella, a sweet chocolatehazelnut spread. So when a large chain of grocery stores offered the spread last week for 70 per cent off its regular price, customers clamoured to get it. They pushed and shoved their way through crowds to buy as much of it as they could, according to news reports by many organization such as CBC News, The Guardian, Forbes, Le Parisien and The New York Times. A 950-gram jar of the spread normally sells in France for 4,70 €. For three days, from Thursday, Jan. 25 until Saturday, Jan. 27, the grocery chain Intermarché offered Nutella for 70 per cent off, or about 1,41 €. In France, Nutella is used on bread (much like peanut butter is used in North America), but because it is sweet and chocolaty, it is also used in desserts and many other dishes. Many French children eat it on baguettes (long, crusty bread) for breakfast. Nutella is an Italian product, manufactured by Ferrero, and it is beloved there and throughout Europe. However, it is even more popular in France, where more than 100 million pots of the spread are reportedly consumed every year. (Germany is the only country which consumes more Nutella than France.) Many people have posted videos and photos of the Nutella riots, where people have been injured or trampled as others tried to grab and buy as much of the discounted treat as possible. In some places, police had to be called in to prevent people from fighting over it. In some stores, the sale went off with much less difficulty and no riots. Some customers went into stores the night before, and stashed pots of Nutella where other people couldn’t find it, so they’d be ready for the sale. Other stores limited people’s purchases to three pots of Nutella per person. On Twitter, mika11ooo posted a photo of the ad showing the discounted price, bemoaning the fact that within five minutes many of the stores were sold out of Nutella.

“In All Of Us Command”

Some of the words to Canada’s national anthem have been changed. In O Canada, the line, “in all thy sons command” has been changed to “in all of us command.” Last week, Canada passed Bill C-210. That bill changes “the National Anthem Act to substitute the words “of us” for the words “thy sons” in the English version of the national anthem, thus making it gender neutral.” Once the bill is approved by the Governor General, it will be come a law. (See UPDATE, below.) In this case, gender neutral means that the anthem no longer refers to one specific gender (males). The wording now includes “all of us” — which means all genders including male, female, transgender and others.** Canada’s national anthem is more than just a song–it’s a symbol of Canada. In a statement, Canada’s Ministry of Canadian Heritage said, “…the equality of all genders should be reflected in our national symbols, as we believe that a more inclusive Canada is a stronger Canada.” They said this change “promotes the equality of sexes and women’s rights.” There have been 12 other attempts in the past to change this wording since 1980, when O Canada was officially named Canada’s national anthem. None of them was successful until this year. The bill was created by Liberal MP (Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier) Mauril Bélanger in 2015. Bélanger passed away the next year. Although he never got to see his bill passed, “Mauril’s dedication to a gender-neutral National Anthem will serve as a legacy for generations to come,” said the Ministry of Canadian Heritage statement. US Government Shuts Down

The federal government of the United States was shut down Friday at midnight. The shutdown means that most of the services provided by the federal government won’t be available. It happened because the government failed to get enough votes to pass its 2018 federal budget. (The budget is an important document that details how the government will spend money. Without a budget, the government cannot fully operate.) Both of the major parties in the United States are blaming each other. The Democrats are blaming Trump and his Republican Party and vice-versa. The reasons for the shutdown are complicated, and they have to do with the fact that government bills are usually about more than one thing. Voters have to agree to the whole bill when they vote for it. One of the reasons the Democrats didn’t vote to pass the budget had to do with the “DACA” part of the bill. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a program that provides protection for the more than 700,000 children in the United States who were brought to the country illegally by their parents or caregivers. Those children

(nicknamed “dreamers”) were too young to have knowingly broken the US’s laws about immigration. The DACA program prevents the dreamers from being sent back to their country of birth. The DACA program ends in March; the Democrats and the Republicans could not agree on the details for a program to take its place. They also couldn’t agree on details about another part of the bill having to do with health insurance for children. And because those were part of the overall budget, it didn’t pass and the government had to be shut down. The shutdown took hundreds of thousands of federal government workers off the job. That includes workers in departments such as education, housing and the environment. (Without a budget, for instance, those workers wouldn’t get paid if they worked.) Some government departments that are “essential,” including health, defence and transportation, were only partially closed. (Those employees will work with the understanding that they will eventually get paid once the government starts up again). The last time the US government was shut down was in 2013, when Barack Obama was president. At that time, Donald Trump blamed Obama for the shutdown and told a reporter that it is the president’s responsibility to make sure the deal gets done and the budget gets passed. The Democrats and the Republicans are trying to come up with a deal they can both agree on, so the shutdown is over as quickly as possible. Mon. Jan. 22, 6 p.m.: Monday afternoon, the House and the Senate agreed to a deal to end the US government shutdown. The deal will provide “short-term funding” which will keep the government open until Feb. 8, when other deals will likely be made. For instance, in the deal, the Republicans have agreed to discuss the future of the Dreamers, according to Reuters in this article. The deal was voted on by Republicans and Democrats and passed 81 to 18 (16 Democrats and two Republicans voted against the deal).

Looking Forward To The January Thaw The January thaw is coming. The term describes unusually warm weather for the time of year–and many people in Canada and the United States should experience it around the end of this month. Many cities in Canada and the U.S. have been hit with blizzards and extremely cold temperatures, as well as high winds and lots of snow. Many cities in Canada had snow and temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) or colder. With the “wind chill factor,” -20 degrees Celsius feels like -35 degrees Celsius. However, the January thaw (also called a bonspiel thaw, according to Global News), is something to look forward to. The thaw could last several hours up to about a week. That’s good news for the many homeless people who have been affected by the severe temperatures. In Toronto, Ontario, homeless people have been crowding into homeless shelters to escape the cold. The city’s mayor decided to open a major public building known as The Armory, to be used a shelter during the very cold nights. Environment Canada says that people who are outside must

cover any exposed skin when it is extremely cold out, in order to avoid frostbite. Frostbite happens when skin freezes, which can cause damage to the skin. Even before the January thaw, many Canadian cities will experience slightly warmer temperatures as early as this week. January 2018

Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached love and believed nonviolent protest was the only way to freedom and equality for black Americans, and in return for his vision of peace he was arrested, stabbed, and finally assassinated.

12

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!

January 2018

He believed in using peaceful means. He thought that positive words and ideas and nonviolent action could change the world. In 1955, he was a 26-yearold pastor at a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama. He soon became the main leader in America’s civil rights movement. It was an effort to end discrimination in all forms against all groups. For the rest of his short life, he inspired people to fight for their rights using nonviolent means. King paid a huge price for his vision. From 1956 until his death in 1968, he was arrested, stabbed, stoned, and finally assassinated. He loved his family, but he was often away from home. He traveled from town to town and state to state. He even went to Europe, Africa, and Asia to share his dream of peace and love. While in school, King learned about Mohandas Gandhi, who had used peaceful means to free India from British rule. Gandhi knew that he could not fight the British government with guns. So he led thousands of people to peacefully break unjust laws. Gandhi allowed himself to be arrested. He went without food for weeks to draw attention to his cause. He led thousands of people on marches. He taught people to boycott (not use) British goods, schools, courts, and offices. In the U.S., King used many of Gandhi’s teachings in his fight for civil rights.

King spent most of his lifetime in the Deep South. He lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama, and his major civil rights campaigns took place in three Alabama cities: Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.

14

King was famous for his speech-making abilities. His style came from a long tradition in black preaching. He used biblical references, symbolic language, and emotional appeals to make his points. He also used a lively call-and-response delivery to persuade and excite people.

Martin Luther King Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. This award is given almost every year. It goes to the person, people, or organization most responsible for promoting peace. King was 35 years old. He was the youngest person ever to receive the prize. In December, he went with family and friends to Oslo, Norway, where the award ceremony took place. On his return, King was showered with honors. The city of Atlanta, where he lived, gave him a fancy dinner event. Together, blacks and whites sang the civil rights anthem, “We Shall Overcome. Only a few years before, King had been arrested in Atlanta for trying to eat at an all-white lunch counter.

January 2018

Martin Luther King’s birthday is January 15. In 1986, it was declared a national holiday. Today, almost every city in America has a street or a park or a school named after him.

Martin Luther King was a talented student. He skipped 9th grade and 12th grade, attending Morehouse College at the age of 15. He went on to graduate with a sociology degree.

Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded a Grammy in 1971 The author of several books, King also won a Grammy award in 1971 for the spoken-word recording Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.

He was the first African-American person to be named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year. January 2018

Alexander Fleming Physician, Microbiologist, Pharmacologist and Inventor of Penicillin

Alexander Fleming was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1881. His father was a farmer but he died when Alexander was just seven. After leaving school, he earned a two-year scholarship to Kilmarnock Academy.

Later, he moved to London and attended the Royal Polytechnic Institution.

26

His first job was in a shipping office but at age twenty, he inherited some money from his uncle.

Alexander’s brother was a physician and at his suggestion, he enrolled at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in Paddington. January 2018

He earned a degree from the school with distinction in 1906.

He became assistant bacteriologist to Sir Almroth Wright, a pioneer in vaccine therapy and immunology.

GREAT MINDS

In 1908, he earned a degree in Bacteriology and later became a lecturer at St. Mary’s. He married Sarah Marion McElroy, a trained nurse, on 24th December 1915.

They had one child, Robert Fleming, who went on to become a doctor.

By 1927, Alexander had developed a reputation as a brilliant researcher and was elected Professor of Bacteriology of the University of London in 1928. January 2018

27

However, his laboratory was often untidy! On 3rd September 1928, he returned to his laboratory after a holiday. Before leaving, he had stacked all his cultures of staphylococci on a bench in a corner. On returning, he noticed that one culture was contaminated with a fungus. The colonies of staphylococci immediately surrounding the fungus had been destroyed, whereas other staphylococci colonies were normal. ‘That’s funny’ he remarked. He grew the mould in a pure culture and found that it produced a substance that killed a number of disease-causing bacteria. On 7th March 1929, after initially calling it ‘mould juice’, he named the substance it released ‘penicillin’.

28

He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain.

Sadly, his wife died in 1949. However, he married again on 9th April 1953 to a Greek colleague at St. Mary’s named Dr. Amalia KoutsouriVourekas. She died in 1986. December 2017

Alexander died of a heart attack in 1955. He is buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.

In 1951 he was elected the Rector of the University of Edinburgh for a term of three years.

In 1999, Time Magazine named Fleming one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.

He will always be remembered for his discovery of penicillin. He also wrote many articles on bacteriology, immunology, and chemotherapy.

His discovery of penicillin changed the world of modern medicine by introducing the age of useful antibiotics. Penicillin has saved, and continues to save, millions of people around the world.

The laboratory in which Fleming discovered and tested penicillin is preserved as the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum in St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington.

Questions:

1. At which medical school did he enroll at his brother’s suggestion? 2. His father was a butcher – true or false? 3. What did he call his discovery before naming it ‘penicillin’? 4. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1945 with how many others? 5. He wrote articles on bacteriology, immunology and what else? 6. How long was he Rector of the University of Edinburgh? 7. What did he famously say when he first discovered penicillin? 8. Where is the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum? 9. He was elected Professor of Bacteriology of which university? 10. Where is Alexander buried?

ANSWERS:1.St. Mary’s Hospital, 2.False – farmer, 3.Mould juice, 4.Two, 5.Chemotherapy, 6.Three years, 7.‘That’s funny’, 8.St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, 9.University of London, 10.St. Paul’s Cathedral, London January 2018

Believe it or not, the tomato is a fruit. The tomato is classed as a fruit, rather than a vegetable, because it has seeds and because it grows from a flowering plant. They originate from South America although China is now the largest producer of tomatoes, followed by the U.S. and India.

Around 150 million tons of tomatoes are produced around the world every year.

There are more than 7500 varieties of tomato grown around the world.

30

The scientific name for tomato is Lycopersicon lycopersicum which means ‘wolf peach’.

January 2018

Popular types include Beefsteak, Oxheart, Plum and Cherry. Tomatoes are usually red in colour although they can also be yellow, green, orange, black, brown, white, purple and pink. A pink tomato? Imagine that!

The fruit is an antioxidant so it is good for the heart. It is also full of vitamins A and C as well as potassium and calcium.

31

In the 19th century, the tomato was called ‘The Apple of Love’ in France and ‘The Apple of Paradise’ in Germany. In England it was thought to be poisonous because of its relation to the deadly nightshade plant.

Cici's Journal: The Adventures of a Writer-In-Training

by Joris Chamblain

34

Cici dreams of being a novelist. Her favorite subject: people, especially adults. She’s been watching them and taking notes. Everybody has one special secret, Cici figures, and if you want to write about people, you need to understand what’s hiding inside them. But now she’s discovered something truly strange: an old man who disappears into the forest every Sunday with huge pots of paint in all sorts of colors. What is he up to? Why does he look so sad when he comes back?

Before She Was Harriet

by Lesa Cline-Ransome, James Ransome

Tentacle and Wing

A lush and lyrical biography of Harriet Tubman, written in verse and illustrated by an awardwinning artist. We know her today as Harriet Tubman, but in her lifetime she was called by many names. As General Tubman she was a Union spy. As Moses she led hundreds to freedom on the Underground Railroad. As Minty she was a slave whose spirit could not be broken. An evocative poem and opulent watercolors come together to honor a woman of humble origins whose courage and compassion make her larger than life.

Twelve-year-old Ada is a Chimera, born with human and animal DNA thanks to a genetic experiment gone wrong. Because being a “kime” is believed to be contagious, she has kept her condition—complete with infrared vision—hidden. But a surprise test outs her, and Ada is shipped off to a quarantined school for kimes. There Ada meets kids of many different shapes, stripes, and appendages, such as a girl with dragonfly wings and a seal-boy. As she adjusts to her new life, Ada senses that the facility is keeping a secret that could upend everything the world knows about Chimeras. But will someone put a stop to her efforts to uncover the truth?

by Xu Bing Every page of this book is filled with secret code. It seems like Chinese calligraphy, but it's not. It seems like you can't read it, but you can. Tru & Nelle: A Christmas Tale Goldeline

by Jimmy Cajoleas In the wild, free woods of the Hinterlands, where magic is as real as stories are, there lives a girl named Goldeline. Goldeline has hair as white as summer snow and gold-flecked eyes, and she travels from camp to camp with Gruff and his bandits, getting by on the things they steal from carriages that pass through the woods. But someone is after Goldeline. The Preacher— the man who wants to cleanse the Hinterlands of anyone who’s different, the man who turned the Townies against Goldeline’s momma for being a witch—thinks that Goldeline must be a witch, too.

by G. Neri

When they were younger, Tru and Nelle were best friends, sharing adventures and solving mysteries in Monroeville, Alabama. But then Tru moved to New York City to live his mother and their friendship slowly faded away. Life in the big city wasn't as fun as Tru had hoped it would be. In fact, he ran away, and now he's back and hoping he and Nelle can be friends again. Unfortunately, thing's aren't so great in Munroeville, either. Maybe he should have run away to somewhere else. But Christmas is just around the corner, and there's nothing like the holidays to bring everyone back together. Based on true events, Tru & Nelle: A Christmas Tale is the continuing story of one of the greatest literary friendships of the 20th century.

Red Again

by Barbara Lehman When a young boy discovers an abandoned book on the side of the road, it opens a window to another world just as real as his own. But what happens when the two worlds collide? This imaginative companion to the Caldecott Honor– winning The Red Book works in a continuous loop, showing us that stories never really end. While fans of the previous book will relish seeing the story play out, prior knowledge isn’t necessary in order to understand or savor this one. January 2018

Lily's Mountain

by Hannah Moderow Lily refuses to believe what everyone else accepts to be true: that her father has died while climbing Denali, the highest mountain in North America. Lily has grown up hiking in the Alaskan wilderness with her dad. He's an expert climber. There's no way he would let something like this happen. So instead of grieving, Lily decides to rescue him. Her plan takes her to Denali and on a journey that tests her physically and emotionally. In this powerful debut, Hannah Moderow has written an authentic Alaskan adventure that crosses terrain both beautiful and haunting— and ultimately shows the bond of family and the wonder of wild places.

Glue Ear If your child has glue ear, it means there is fluid in the space behind the ear drum. The main symptom of glue ear is hearing difficulty. Hearing loss for prolonged periods of time during the early years may affect speech and language development.

36

What is glue ear? Glue ear occurs when the space behind the ear drum (middle ear) is filled with fluid. The fluid can be thick and sticky which is why it's called glue ear. Glue ear can affect one or both ears. It often follows an ear infection or can occur on its own. See the page on ear infections for an explanation of how fluid can build up in the space behind the ear drum and a diagram of the inside of the ear. Whether or not an ear infection has been treated with January 2018

antibiotics, the fluid in the space behind the ear drum may stay around for weeks. However, the fluid usually clears up in 80 percent of children within 12 weeks. When there is fluid in the space behind the ear drum for more than a couple of weeks, it's called OME (otitis media with effusion) or secretory otitis media. These are the medical names for glue ear.

Why is glue ear a problem? Normal hearing relies on the space behind the ear drum (middle ear) being full of air. When this air is replaced by fluid, it is harder for the ear drum to vibrate and carry the noise vibrations to the inner ear. This makes it harder for your child to hear. If both ears have fluid, your child's hearing can be significantly reduced. Hearing loss for prolonged periods of time during the early years may affect speech and language development. 37

January 2018

Signs and symptoms of glue ear Children with glue ear are not unwell and may have few symptoms other than hearing loss - the most important symptom. Often, glue ear is only found when your child is being examined for something completely different. It is always a good idea for you to make sure your family doctor checks your children's ears at every opportunity.

Hearing loss The extent of hearing loss in children with glue ear can vary but the average hearing loss is similar to trying to hear with ear plugs in place. Sounds are muffled. Young children can't express this hearing loss and often parents mistakenly feel that their child is ignoring them. Signs to watch for include your child: 38

lasking

for things to be repeated lmishearing things lwanting the television up louder lReduced hearing may cause behaviour problems such as a lack of concentration or attention. Children may feel irritable if they keep missing out on what others are saying. Problems with speech and language development could be a sign of glue ear. Although the fluid doesn't usually cause pain, sleep disturbance

January 2018

Treatment for glue ear The best treatment for glue ear is time. In most children, episodes of glue ear get better without active treatment. For this reason, your family doctor may simply recommend regular appointments for up to 3 months so they can check your child's ears.

If your child has fluid in the space behind the ear drum for more than 3 months, treatment options include:

Ongoing observation This may be an option if hearing and development are normal. As children grow older they are less likely to have glue ear. This is because their Eustachian tubes get bigger and work better. The Eustachian tubes connect the space behind the ear drum (middle ear) of each ear to the back of the nose. Regular reviews by a health professional are necessary during this period.

Grommets (tympanostomy or ventilation tubes) Some children with ongoing glue ear may require grommets

Heart Facts You must have felt your own heart beating, well this actually works from electricity, yes really, electricity! Your heart contracts, or tightens up and this makes all the chambers smaller and pushes blood back into the blood vessels. So that’s how it’s done… interesting! When your heart relaxes again, the chambers get bigger and the blood comes back into your heart. Wow, sounds pretty complex. 40

This amazing bit of body machinery pumps about 100 gallons (380 liters) of blood through your body, every single hour, which is about 2,400 gallons (9000 liters) per day. Man it works hard. That’s about the same as 1,600 glasses of water, per hour and 38,400 glasses of water per day. Wow. We certainly wouldn’t be able to drink that much water. Now let’s work that out over a lifetime…it pumps about 1 million barrels of blood during an average lifetime which would fill three super tankers. Getting the idea of how hard this little fellow works?

The heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces (about 200 to 425 grams) which is about the same as a bottle of Heinz Ketchup! Pick up a bottle of ketchup and you’ll be able to feel how much your heart actually weighs. The average adult heart beats about 72 times a minute, 100,000 times a day and 3,600 times a year. During a person’s life their heart could beat more than 3.5 billion, yes 3.5 billion, times. Can you believe there is actually a time and a day when most heart attacks occur? Well it’s between 8 and 9am in the morning and Monday is the most popular day.

So everyone thinks that the heart is on the left side of your chest, well it’s not. Whoever made that up has fooled people for years, maybe it was a trickster trying to trick us. It’s actually right in the middle of your chest between your two lungs. It is protected by your ribs. At least we know it’s in a safe spot!
