A Trip to the Eye Doctor

20

Sara came home from school one day with a note from her teacher. The note said ‘Sara is having trouble seeing the board, maybe she needs to have her eyes examined’. After reading the note, her mom asked Sara how long she had been having trouble seeing the board. “I think it’s been about a month” said Sara. “Why haven’t you said anything?” Mom asked. “I’m calling Dr. Suad and making an appointment for you tomorrow after school”. Sara went to her room and began to worry. I don’t want to wear glasses, she thought. She was afraid the girls at school would make fun of her. That night Sara tossed and turned and did not sleep. The next morning Mom said “Don’t forget we are going to see Dr. Suad after school today”. “I don’t feel well” Sara said. “Maybe I should stay home from school”. “Oh no” said Mom. “You are not going to try to get out of going to the eye doctor”. Mom picked Sara up after school and went to Dr. Saud’s office. When Sara went in to see the doctor, she was so nervous. The doctor said that Sara was having trouble seeing things from far away. She explained to Sara that she would need to pick out some glasses to help her see well. Sara’s face showed a huge frown. “What’s wrong?” asked Dr. Suad. “I don’t want to wear glasses!” Sara said. “All the girls are going to laugh at me”. “Sara, how come you aren’t laughing at me?” Dr. Suad asked. “I’m wearing glasses”. “You look so pretty in yours” said Sara. “Suppose we pick out some glasses that look almost like mine?” said the doctor. Sara and Dr. Suad found some brown and black glasses like hers. Sara put them on and read from far away for Dr. Suad. “Everything looks so clear!” said Sara. “I really like my new glasses”. Sara went to school the next day and put her glasses on to read the board. She expected the girls to laugh at her, but they said “Sara your glasses are so cool!” “I wish I had glasses” said Aisha. “Me too” said Nada. Sara felt so much better knowing she looked cool in her new glasses and she realized she had worried for nothing.

Amina woke up the morning after her birthday party and smiled as she remembered what fun she’d had with her friends. Her mom had made a big birthday cake and she’d blown out all the candles in one go! The cake was yummy and luckily there was some left for today. Her mom was taking her shopping later to spend her birthday money. She’d never had so much money to spend, everyone had been really generous. She wished it was her birthday every day! At the shops, she gazed at the shiny pink sandals, the pink handbag with sparkly tassels and the pink sunglasses with a

‫أشياء مهمة يجب تذكرها لنظام غذائي صحي‬

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER FOR A HEALTHY DIET

Have regular meals with your family. It is a well known fact that kids who eat breakfast tend to do better in school. It is also comforting to know that dinner is served at around the same time every evening so the whole family can look forward to sitting down together, sharing a meal and telling each other about their day.

Meals at home are better. Eating at home is usually healthier than eating out. Restaurant meals tend to include more fat, sugar and salt and it’s tempting to order starters or deserts that you don’t actually need! Save dining out for special occasions.

Get involved. It’s fun to help with the grocery shopping and the cooking. You can select what goes in your lunch box and can learn what is good for you and what is not by reading labels and eating grilled food instead of fried.

Choose healthy snacks instead. Water, milk and pure fruit juice are better for you than fizzy drinks (and better for your teeth too). Choose fresh fruits like apples, bananas and pears rather than sugary sweets or chocolate bars. Avoid chips and cookies and try crunchy raw carrots instead!

Eat smaller portions. You don’t have to eat everything that’s on your plate! If you are full up, stop eating and try to avoid snacking unnecessarily between meals.

Sami has a cold.

Sami has a runny nose and he is coughing and sneezing. He has a cold!

May 2015

But how did he catch a cold?

It’s all because of tiny little germs. Germs?! What are germs?

31

Germs are tiny little living things that can live in the air, on the floor and on other things. There are millions of germs! But we can only see them with a microscope.

www.kidzine.net

Can we see germs? I can’t see any germ on my hands?

How do these tiny germs give us a cold?

Just touching germs doesn’t do any harm but they can make us feel ill if they get inside our bodies.

32

How do germs get inside our body?

s in lots Germs can get into our bodie and of ways. If someone has a cogld ir the they sneeze without coverin s mouth, we can breathe in germ without noticing. If you put things in your rs or if mouth, like dirty fingein g your you eat without washt in that hands, germs can ge way too.

How can we stop them getting inside our body?

If you have a cold, you can help stop it spreading by covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough. You should never put dirty things in your mouth and always wash your hands before eating.

1. Experiment Looking over many of the shots that I took in those early days shows me that I took a lot of shots of almost exactly the same things. I approached my subjects in much the same way with every shot and as a result ended up with very similar results. Try to vary your shots in a number of ways, such as: 1. Shoot from different perspectives – up high, down low etc 2. Getting in close – step back for a wider angle shot 3. Moving around your subject to shoot from different sides 4. Experimenting with different settings (try the different modes)

Todd T he Toad

Todd the toad was having one of his tantrums. It had not stopped raining all day and the rain water was making everything shiny and clean. His favourite lily leaf was now sparkling like an emerald and the pond was crystal clear. So clear, he could see the fish swimming around beneath him. He hopped around on his leaf, turning his back on the pond but even the bank was sparkling where the rain drops had settled on the mossy slope. “Stop raining!” he shouted at the sky. Todd preferred it when everything was dirty and dull so he couldn’t see his ugly reflection. He hated the warts on his head, the hairs on his chin and his big bug eyes. Why did he have to be so ugly? “What’s up with you Todd?” asked Kingsley the Kingfisher. “You’ve got a May 2015

face like a wet weekend” The colourful bird had perched on a branch above Todd’s head, its bright feathers glistening in the rain. “Very funny” said Todd. “Shouldn’t you be catching fish?” “Plenty of time for that my friend” said the bird. “I’ve come to tell you a joke” Todd wasn’t really in the mood for jokes but Kingsley was unlikely to take no for an answer. “Why are fish so smart?” he asked. “I don’t know” said Todd. “Why are fish so smart?” “Because they live in schools!” Kingsley laughed so much he almost fell from the branch. Todd didn’t think it was very funny. If fish were so smart why did most of them get eaten by kingfishers?

www.kidzine.net

64

“Here’s another one” he said. “What animal has more lives than a cat? Frogs, because they croak every night!” This time Todd did laugh. He laughed so much he slipped off his leaf and fell head first into the pond. The startled fish darted for cover and Daisy Duck, who had been dozing under a dock leaf, cast a dirty look in the direction of the splash. He was still laughing when he hopped out of the water and settled himself back on his leaf. Then a strange thing happened. He saw his

reflection in the water. He looked different. “What’s up with you?” asked Kingsley. “Cat got your tongue?” “Do I look different to you?” said Todd, looking up at this feathered friend. “Yes” answered Kingsley, “you’re smiling” Todd looked back at his reflection. This time he didn’t see the warts on his head or the hairs on his chin. He didn’t even see his big bug eyes. This time all he saw was his smile. It lit up his whole face. He no longer looked ugly, he looked……..happy. “Thank you Kingsley, you are a very good friend indeed. From this day forward I will be a happy toad” Kingsley was delighted to see his friend smiling and decided to tell him one more joke before he caught a big fat fish for his dinner. “What do you say to a hitch-hiking frog? Hop-in!” 65

Alexander Graham Bell

Inventor of the Telephone Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was an engineer and scientist and he invented the telephone in 1876.

Both his mother and his wife were death. This influenced his research on hearing devices. Despite his life-changing invention, he considered the telephone an intrusion and refused to have one in his study!

66

Working from his laboratory in Boston and his home in Canada, he experimented with a pen-like machine that recorded sound waves by tracing their vibrations. He believed it may be possible to generate electrical currents that matched sound waves. He also thought that multiple metal reeds tuned to different frequencies could convert the currents back into sound. Bell lacked the necessary equipment required to continue his experiments until he met an electrical designer named Thomas A. Watson. Together, they worked on acoustic telegraphy which eventually led to the ‘gallows’ soundpowered telephone. This transmitted indistinct, voice-like sounds but not clear speech.

Bell patented the acoustic telegraph in 1876 and three days after the patent was issued he succeeded in getting his telephone to work. He did this using a liquid transmitter. May 2015

He demonstrated his new invention to the public, gaining international attention and was asked to demonstrate it personally to Queen Victoria who declared it ‘most extraordinary’. The Bell Telephone Company was created in 1877 and by 1886, more than 150,000 people in the U.S. owned a telephone.

67

In 1915, Bell made the first transcontinental telephone call from New York City to San Francisco.

Whilst he is best known for his invention of the telephone, Bell was granted a total of 30 patents (18 in his name alone and 12 shared). His other inventions included a metal jacket to assist in breathing, the audiometer to detect minor hearing problems and a device to locate icebergs.

Bell died in August 1922. Immediately after his funeral, every telephone in North America was silenced in his honor.

Alexander Graham Bell’s famous quote:

“In scientific researches, there are no unsuccessful experiments; every experiment contains a lesson. If we don’t get the results anticipated and stop right there, it is the man that is unsuccessful, not the experiment” www.kidzine.net

INSPIRING YOUR CHILD TO READ Have you met a successful person who can’t read? The answer is most likely to be no. Through reading, the brain learns new things and the heart feels new emotions, hitting two birds with one stone. Have you ever asked your child what he or she wants to become one day? A teacher, a doctor, an architect? Pretty much whatever job your child wants to do there’s a lot of reading ahead, so now is the time to set our kids up for success later. Be a parent and help out Is your child one of the many kids who doesn’t want to read? If so, there are so many things you can do to change that! Does your child love singing? Your child may prefer to read song lyrics of unfamiliar

music instead of a chapter from a book. If your child loves sports or cars then there are plenty of sports magazines your child would love. If your child loves art, perhaps consider comic books. Be innovative and think outside the box - don’t just think of chapter books. Tap into your child’s May 2015

interests. Make it a ‘rewarding’ experience… literally! Be ultra-generous with your child when they read. Give them money to spend on books and give them really good rewards when they read. Most adults don’t enjoy going to work, but we do because we get paid for it. It’s the same when it comes to kids and reading. Many kids don’t enjoy reading… so give them incentives! The incentive doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be something your child likes; perhaps their favorite chocolate or time on the PlayStation. As parents, we love rewards and so do kids! Penalize your child if they refuse to read You may not receive a ‘Parent of the Year’ award from your child, but this really does work. Imagine if playing computer games or watching television was dependent on your child reading first for 10 minutes, it works wonders for their willingness to read.

their vocabulary like reading proper books will. Social media is more the ‘junk food’ of reading, it’s better than nothing but it’s not exactly going to turn your child into a literary genius. High school kids usually have the skills to read, so parents need to find ways to help kids get stuck into their reading as they get older. Crystal Clear – eyesight and dyslexia It’s vital to have your child’s eyesight checked every two years by an optometrist, because most kids who need glasses don’t realize it until years later. Ask your child what the words are doing on the page. If your child explains that words are shaking, moving, wiggling or anything other than staying still, your child probably has a dose of dyslexia. There are plenty of easy ways to help your child if they are dealing with dyslexia.

Resist the urge to criticize Don’t get stuck in the role of school teacher when your child reads. Nothing turns a child off reading as quickly as constant feedback and correction about their reading. Just like Queen Elsa in Frozen, sometimes we just want to scream and shout out what we’re feeling, but let’s do our best to use selfcontrol! When your child is stuck on a word, immediately tell them what it is. Avoid making your child sound out words because it makes them really hate reading… And who can blame them? It’s what we don’t say that often makes reading more fun for our kids. High-school life for your child A teenager’s life often revolves around social media. This can be helpful for their reading skills, but it’s not going to grow www.kidzine.net

Color Blindness

What Teachers Should Know Color blindness is caused by problems in the color-detecting nerve cells located in the back of the eye, called cones. As a result, some people have trouble telling the difference between red and green (the most common kind of color blindness), and between blue and yellow. Achromatopsia is a rare a form of color blindness in which people can't see any colors — they only see shades of gray. Symptoms of color blindness usually aren't noticed until children start learning the names of colors. Kids and teens who are color blind see shapes, lines, and everything that anyone else can, they just don't think about certain colors the way others do. Color Blind Test

110

People who are color blind see normally in other ways and can do normal things, such as drive. They just learn to respond to the way traffic signals light up, knowing that the red light is generally on top and green is on the bottom. Some people can use special contact lenses and glasses to help them see some color differences, but there is no cure for color blindness.

Students who are color blind may:

nbe unable to tell the difference between certain colors or

shades of similar colors nhave trouble with certain assignments or projects that require them to use color nbe sensitive to light in the classroom and need seating accommodations nfeel self-conscious or frustrated about their color blindness nbe at risk for teasing or bullying because of color blindness

What Teachers Can Do

Getting to know and understand what color blind students can and cannot see — from parents or guardians, other teachers, and the student themselves — will help you understand and meet their needs much better.

Ways to help a student with color blindness include:

nwriting in black on a whiteboard instead of using colors (or using white chalk on the blackboard instead of colored chalk) nmaking copies of handouts with a high black/white contrast, and not on colored paper nwriting out the names of colors if they are relevant to instruction (yellow sun, green frog, etc.) nmaking sure art supplies or other supplies with colors are appropriately labeled May 2015
