Welcome to Hi Kids, Welcome to this March issue of KidZine. Did you take part in ‘Earth Hour’ on 19th March? This campaign encouraged us all to switch off our lights for one hour to show that we care about our environment. Earth is very precious and we need to do all we can to protect it. You can read all about our wonderful Planet Earth in this issue of Kidzine, as well as five of the most famous Astronomers of all time. You can also learn all about Oranges, take a trip to Berlin and read about that fascinating animal the Hippopotamus. I’m sure you all know it’s Mother’s Day this month. Why not make mom a special Mother’s Day gift? Our Crafty Corner segment is just what you need to give your mom a treat. With all of the rain we’ve had in Kuwait recently, it’s a good job the family car has windscreen wipers! But have you ever wondered who invented these clever blades? Read on to discover who we have to thank for this marvelous invention! This month’s ‘Maths Giant’ is Omar Khayyam – the man responsible for laying down the principles of algebra! But if maths isn’t your thing, why not try a new language instead? Start with some basic German words and phrases in our Language Club. Don’t forget to enter our ‘Writing Prompts’ competition – the winning story will be printed in next month’s Kidzine! You can also win 6 Dunkin Donuts in our design competition. In addition to all of these exciting things, this month’s magazine also includes all of your regular favourites. Have fun kids! See you next time. JAMEEL ARIF

Children’s Travel Case Turns Into A Fully-Playable Batmobile The Batmobile Kids’ Travel Case is based on the latest version of the Dark Knight’s ride as found in the upcoming Dawn of Justice movie, so it’s as current as any Batman toy you can find in the market. It’s heavily detailed, too, recreating many of the elements found in the movie version of the ride, including a pair of machine guns out front for blasting supervillains out of the way. Of course, it’s a functional travel suitcase, with a hinged top lid that opens to reveal a decent-sized storage space for clothes, toys, and whatever else kids want to bring to a trip. It can also be dragged in two ways: through the two rear wheels using a traditional luggage handle and on all four wheels like a real toy car using an alternate handle.

Soil is made up of distinct horizontal layers. If you could take an elevator ride through the earth’s surface you would pass several distinct layers.

The humus is the topmost layer of soil. It contains quite a bit of living material, plants, decaying leaves, needles, moss, and more. This layer is thin and very dark in color.

The topsoil is the next layer down. It is made mostly of minerals, and most plant roots live here. This layer is also dark in color due to the amount of decaying plant and animal matter.

The subsoil layer is next. It is made of sand, silt and clay that have not been broken down all the way, so it usually has less organic material in it. It is also lighter in color.

The parent material is the next layer down. It is mostly rock that has been slightly weathered. Not many things live down here, except for the biggest tree roots. The bedrock is the lowest layer of soil. It is a solid rock layer. www.kidzine.net

EYE FACTS How much do you know about your eyes? 1. Only 1/6 of the human eyeball is exposed. 2. Corneas are the only tissues that don’t have blood. 3. The human eye weighs approximately just under an ounce and is about an inch across. 4. An eye cannot be transplanted. More than 1 million nerve fibers connect each eye to the brain and currently we’re not able to reconstruct those connections. 5. 80% of our memories are determined by what we see. 6. Eyes heal quickly. With proper care, it takes only about 48 hours to repair a minor corneal scratch. 7. There are about 39 million people that are blind around the world. 8. 80% of vision problems worldwide are avoidable or even curable. 9. Humans and dogs are the only species known to seek visual cues from another individual’s eyes, and dogs only do this when interacting with humans. 10. A fingerprint has 40 unique characteristics, b. but an iris has 256, a reason retina scans are increasingly being used for security purposes. 11. People who are blind can see their dreams if they weren’t born blind. 12. “Red eye” occurs in photos because light from the flash bounces off the back of the eye. The choroid is located behind the retina and is rich in blood vessels, which make it appear red on film.

Fun facts about the eye lThe image at the retina is actually upside down from the actual image. Our brain

figures this out for us and switches it around, or we would get really confused! lThe cornea is a clear layer at the front of the eye that helps protect it. lWe have a blind spot where the optical nerve connects to the retina. lTears help keep the eye clean, but scientist don't really understand why we cry when we are sad or upset. lThe average person blinks 15 times per minute. lAround eight percent of men are color blind, but less than one percent of women. March 2016

Famous Blind and Sight Impaired People

In a number of ways, the human eye works much like a digital camera: 1. Light is focused primarily by the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye, which acts like a camera lens.

Andrea Bocelli - (born 22 September 1958) Andrea Bocelli had become blind at the age of 12 years old following a football accident in which he was hit in the head. At 6 years old Bocelli was taking piano lessons before also learning the saxophone and the flute. His family would always ask him to sing, bocelli once said "I don't think a singer decides to sing, it is the others who choose that you sing by their reactions". Bocelli has also sung with other great singers such as Pavarotti. 21

2. The iris of the eye functions like the diaphragm of a camera, controlling the amount of light reaching the back of the eye by automatically adjusting the size of the pupil (aperture). 3. The eye's crystalline lens is located directly behind the pupil and further focuses light. Through a process called accommodation, this lens helps the eye automatically focus on near and approaching objects, like an autofocus camera lens. 4. Light focused by the cornea and crystalline lens (and limited by the iris and pupil) then reaches the retina — the light-sensitive inner lining of the back of the eye. The retina acts like an electronic image sensor of a digital camera, converting optical images into electronic signals. The optic nerve then transmits these signals to the visual cortex — the part of the brain that controls our sense of sight.

Galileo Galilei - (15 February 1564 - 8 January 1642) Galileo Galilei was a Tuscan (Italian) astronomer, mathematician, physicist, and philosopher being greatly responsible for the scientific revolution. Some of his accomplishments include improvements to the telescope, accelerated motion and astronomical observations. Galileo was the first to discover the four largest satellites of Jupiter which were named the Galilean moons in his honor. Galileo had also improved compass design and eventually opposed the geocentric view. His sight started to deteriorate at the age of 68 years old and eventually lead to complete blindness.

Maslenitsa (Russian: Ма́сленица, Ukrainian: Масниця, Belarusian: Масьленіца, also known as Butter Week, Crepe week, or Cheesefare Week), is an Eastern Slavic religious and folk holiday, celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, that is, the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Pascha (Easter). Maslenitsa corresponds to the Western Christian Carnival, except that Orthodox Lent begins on a Monday instead of a Wednesday, and the Orthodox date of Easter can differ greatly from the Western Christian date.

Summerlost by Ally Condie

Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar

It's the first real summer since the devastating accident that killed Cedar's father and younger brother, Ben. But now Cedar and what’s left of her family are returning to the town of Iron Creek for the summer. They’re just settling into their new house when a boy named Leo, dressed in costume, rides by on his bike. Intrigued, Cedar follows him to the renowned Summerlost theatre festival. Soon, she not only has a new friend in Leo and a job working concessions at the festival, she finds herself surrounded by mystery.

While her friends are spending their summers having pool parties and sleepovers, twelve-year-old Carolina - Carol - is spending hers in the middle of the New Mexico desert, helping her parents move the grandfather she’s never met into a home for people with dementia. At first, Carol avoids prickly Grandpa Serge. But as the summer wears on and the heat bears down, Carol finds herself drawn to him, fascinated by the crazy stories he tells her about a healing tree, a green-glass lake, and the bees that will bring back the rain and end a hundred years of drought.

The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle by Janet Fox

Something is not right at Rookskill Castle, a rundown Scottish manor shrouded in mystery. The castle is a temporary boarding school for children escaping the Blitz, but soon it’s clear there is something terribly wrong. There are clues hinting that a spy is in the house, and there are undeniable signs of a sinister magic. When the children in the castle’s temporary boarding school begin disappearing one by one, it’s a race against the clock for twelve-year-old Kat Bateson, her two younger siblings, and their new best friend.

For readers of Cynthia Kadohata and Rita Williams-Garcia and anyone searching for the true meaning of family. Soledad has always been able to escape into the stories she creates. Just like her mother always could. And Soledad has needed that escape more than ever in the five years since her mother and sister died and her father moved Sol and her youngest sister from the Philippines to Louisiana.

CLUB Teeny Tiny Toady by Jill Esbaum

When a giant hand scoops up her mama and puts her in a pail, a terrified tiny toad named Teeny hops faster than she ever did in her life. "Mama’s stuck inside a bucket! Help me get her out!” she begs her big, clumsy brothers. “Don’t you worry, kid. We’ll save her!” they promise, bumbling and stumbling and jumbling out the door. But as the boys rush headlong to the rescue, pushing their little sister aside, it becomes clear: brawn isn't always better than brains - and the smallest of the family may just be the smartest one of all. Written in lilting verse.

chicken + pox = chickenpox. Lots of little kids call this disease chickenpops because it's easy to understand, as the spots sort of pop out on the skin for several days!

What does it look like? lYou may feel hot and have a runny nose. lYou get a rash which starts with a red spot,

32

which then turns into a blister, and more spots come over the next few days. lThe blisters dry out and turn into scabs. lYou may have lots of spots all over your body and even in your mouth, or you may have just one or two spots.

Chickenpox is caused by a virus (Varicella Zoster virus - say vari-sella zos-ter - sounds like a real person doesn't it?).

March 2016

lSome people can have chickenpox without the spots (lucky things). lThe spots itch a lot and as they dry out you may really feel like scratching. lWhen the spots have healed you usually can't see where they were (no scars). lIt lasts about a week.

How do you get it? lChickenpox usually appears between 13-17 days after you have

been around someone who has it. lYou get it through the air when someone who has chickenpox coughs or sneezes. lYou can get it by touching the watery stuff that comes out of the chickenpox blisters. lYou can get it by touching something that has touched the watery stuff from the blisters. lBetter not to have chickenpox at all - get immunised! 33

What should you do lStay home from school for 5 days after

the first spots arrive or until all the blisters are dry - which could be longer. lHave plenty of drinks. lEat icecream and jelly to soothe your mouth if you have blisters in there (that bit sounds good, doesn't it?) lHave cool baths. Mum, dad or whoever looks after you, may put in some oils from the chemist which will help stop the itching. lPut Calamine Lotion or other creams that you can also get from the chemist onto the spots after each bath, and it will cool you down and help stop you wanting to scratch. www.kidzine.net

If you are really itchy and can't get to sleep, mum or dad may take you to see the doctor who may give you some anti-histamine tablets to help with the itch.

What should you not do? lDon't scratch (even if you are really itchy). lYou can get infections from your nails, and even cause little scars to

still be there after the spots have gone.

34

Shingles lShingles is sort of a grown up

relation of chickenpox. People who have had chickenpox when they were young may get shingles when they are older. lA person can't catch shingles

from someone who has shingles or chickenpox, but touching the watery stuff in shingles spots can give someone chickenpox if they haven't already had it.

March 2016

CLINIC

How to avoid chickenpox lThere is an immunisation (say im-you-ny-zay-shun)

against chickenpox for little children when they are 18 months old, or older children when they are between 10 and 14 years old if they have not had chickenpox or been immunised against it.

Baghdad Street – Building 38 same as Boushahri Seema Pharmacy, Opposite Suleiman Al-Luhaib Mosque - Tel : 1888877

Boushahri_clinic

lMany kids used to get chickenpox when they are

little, when it is usually not too bad and usually nearly all their friends get it around the same time. Nowadays few kids get it unless they have not been immunised. 35

Did you know? lLong ago the word 'pox' meant curse or plague,

and some people believed that children who had chickenpox had been cursed by a witch. lIn the 16th century it was thought that

chickenpox was a mild form of smallpox which was a very bad infection that often killed people. lThe vaccine against chickenpox is called the

varicella vaccine.

The Earth is unlike every other planet in the Solar System in a number of different ways. It is the only planet that has an atmosphere containing 21 percent oxygen.

It is the only planet that has liquid water on its surface.

It is the only planet in the solar system that has life.

The Earth is the only inner planet (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) to have one large satellite, the Moon. Mars has two very tiny moons. Mercury and Venus have none.

The Earth is fragile. Its surface is split into plates (tectonic plates) which float on a rocky mantle – the layer between the surface of the earth, its crust, and its hot liquid core. The inside of the Earth is active and earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain building takes place along the boundaries of the tectonic plates.

Earth As a result of the Earth’s geological activity (the volcanoes and earthquakes) the surface of the Earth has far fewer craters than the surface of planets such as Mars, Venus and Mercury or the surface of the Moon. The craters have sunk down or been worn away by wind and rain over millions of years. When viewed from outer space much of the Earth’s surface cannot be seen because of clouds of water vapour. The water vapour makes the Earth, when seen from outside, into a brilliant shining orb.

The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and comes between the planet Venus and the planet Mars.

The planets closer to the Sun, Mercury and Venus, have shorter years than the Earth. The planets further away from the Sun have longer years; Pluto takes 249 of our years to make one orbit of the Sun.

As the Earth orbits round the Sun it turns on its axis, rotating right round in 24 hours. The side of the Earth that faces the Sun has daytime and the side of the Earth that is turned away from the Sun has night-time. When it is daytime in Britain, it is night-time on the opposite side of the Earth in New Zealand.

As the Earth orbits round the Sun it tilts very slightly and so gives us the seasons. When the Earth has tilted so that the northern half of the Earth is a little away from the Sun, the northern hemisphere (meaning half of the Earth’s sphere) has winter.

At this time the southern hemisphere is tilted very slightly towards the Sun and the southern hemisphere has summer. Winter in Britain means summer in New Zealand. Closer to the Equator there is much less difference between summer and winter.

The Earth is 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometres from the Sun.

We can also say that the Earth is 1 AU from the Sun. Astronomers (people who study the planets and stars) use a measurement called an Astronomical Unit, AU. Earth’s measurements are taken as the standard for this system, so Earth is 1 AU from the Sun, Venus is 0.72 AU from the Sun and Mars is 1.52 AU from the Sun. Pluto, furthest out, is 39.5 AU from the Sun. How many million miles from the Sun is Pluto?

The Earth’s diameter, the distance round its middle at the Equator, is 7928 miles, or 12760 kilometres.

The Earth is not an exact sphere; the diameter going round the North and South Poles is slightly less than the diameter round the Equator. The Polar diameter is 7891 miles, or 12700 kilometres. (Try measuring the different diameters of an orange and you will see how they can differ).

The Earth is larger than Mercury, Venus and Mars, the planets closest to it. On astronomy maps it often looks smaller than Venus because Venus is shown with a thick layer of sulphuric acid. The Earth differs from all the other planets because it has such a wide diversity of life and intelligent beings. This has only been possible because of the Earth’s atmosphere which has protected the Earth and allowed life to flourish.

“New Teacher”

40

The old History teacher from the last school year decided to retire from work. We were going to have a new teacher. Yet when the principal brought in the new teacher, that teacher was actually a really old man named Mr. Arbuckle. He has bushy eye brows, a mustache, and a curly mop of hair on his balding head. Mr. Arbuckle had an interesting way of talking about history in such a detail that it was as if he was actually there in person. It wasn’t long before many of the students began to question where he came from, how long he had been teaching, and how did he knew so much about History. My curiosity had the best of me, and one day after school I decided to follow him home to learn more about the new teacher. Everything seemed normal until…

“The Map” It was supposed to be a typical Saturday playing video games, but mom insisted I help her clean out the attic. It was cluttered with several boxes of memorabilia and keepsakes from my grandparents. When I took the last box down I noticed a large folded piece of paper stuck to the bottom of the last box. I opened the paper to find something I didn't expect - a map of my neighborhood with an 'X' marked upon it. Could this be some sort of treasure... I thought I should not open it as it may be something secret. When I asked my parents about the piece of paper they replied “It’s just a piece of rubbish, it’s nothing to do with you”. I went down to my back yard because over there nobody could see me. I opened the paper gently as it was brittle. When I looked at it, I saw it was some sort of map. I was amazed. I ran down to my friend’s house and shouted “Look look what I found, it’s a map! Let’s go and look where the map will take us’’. We packed our bags with everything we needed for our journey. We ran to the beach carrying the heaviest boat ever, threw the boat in the ocean and jumped in. We started rowing with the oars and when we were in the middle of the ocean, we heard sounds of some kind. Only my friend Jason could see where the sound was coming from. He said “It’s a pirate ship. They are invisible. It’s the same as the story I told you. Only if you are a pirate can you see them. Everything about them is invisible”. The map told us the same thing. Of course, the pirates could see us so we sneaked in. Jason distracted them while I sneaked in. I went in and took the treasure, and then we went back to the boat. When we reached home we showed our parents the treasure I had found. It was filled with rubies, gold and emeralds. I was happy but I was also frightened on our journey. It was an exciting journey. I wished I had another one but we were rich and had a much better life from now on. www.kidzine.net

Mary Anderson Inventor of the windscreen wiper

Mary Anderson was born in Greene County, Alabama in 1866. Little is known of her early life but she went on to become a real estate developer and rancher. She also grew grapes and later invented the windscreen wiper.

50

In 1889, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama with her widowed mother and sister. Here, she developed the Fairmont Apartments on Highland Avenue. Later, in 1893, she moved to California where she operated a vineyard and cattle ranch. She continued to manage the Fairmont Apartments and moved back to Birmingham in 1898. It was during a trip to New York in the winter of 1902 that she witnessed the driver of a trolley car driving his vehicle with the double front window open. He was unable to keep the windshield clear of the snow and sleet. As a result, the occupants were exposed to the elements making the journey, very unpleasant indeed. When she returned to Alabama, she enlisted help to design and manufacture a hand-operated windshield cleaning device. In 1903 she was granted a 17-year patent for a windshield wiper. Her device consisted of a lever inside the vehicle which controlled a rubber blade on the outside. It had a spring-loaded arm (to rotate the wiper) and a counterweight (to ensure it remained in contact with the window). Apparently, similar devices had been made previously, but none were effective.

March 2016

In 1905, Mary attempted to sell the rights to her invention. Unfortunately, it was rejected because it was not considered to have any commercial value – cars were still uncommon and most didn’t travel fast enough to warrant a windscreen at all! When her patent expired in 1920, the automobile manufacturing business boomed and windshield wipers (using Mary’s basic design) became standard. It was the car manufacturer Cadillac that became the first company to use them as standard equipment in 1922. Unfortunately, Mary never profited from her invention. Throughout her life, Mary continued to manage the Fairmont Apartments. In fact, she continued this role until her death at the age of 87. She died at her summer house in Monteagle, Tennessee but is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama. 51

It wasn’t until 1917 that a patent was filed for an automatic windshield wiper. Again, this was invented by a woman, Charlotte Bridgwood. Again, her invention was not a commercial success.

Quiz

1. Why was Mary unable to sell the rights to her invention? 2. What was the name of the apartment building she managed? 3. Where did Mary die? 4. When was she awarded a patent for her invention? 5. Which car manufacturer was the first to use it as standard? 6. What was the purpose of the counterweight? 7. Where did she first have the idea for a windshield wiper? 8. What other occupations did Mary have? 9. What did she do in California? 10. How much money did Mary make from her invention? www.kidzine.net

Astronomers FAMOUS SKY Check out five famous astronomers who are the five of the better known scientists and thinkers of their time, with short reading paragraphs, a timeline and word search.

Eratosthenes (276-195 B.C.) This Greek mathematician was the first person to accurately measure the circumference of Earth. He determined that Earth was about 25,000 miles around. He was very close! (It’s in fact, closer to 24,901 miles.)

Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) This German scientist made a breakthrough discovery that the orbits of the planets are elliptical (oval) instead of round. Before Kepler’s findings, other astronomers thought orbits of planets were perfect circles. 58

Sir Isaac Newton (1643–1727) This British mathematician and physicist is famous for confirming the principle of gravity. He used his theory of gravity to explain how the Moon is held in orbit around Earth. He theorized that the force (gravity) that caused an apple, or anything that takes up space, to fall to the ground had the same effect on the Moon. But the farther away to particles are from each other the weaker that force becomes.

TIME LINE:

WATCHERS SCIENTISTS Claudius Ptolemaeus / Ptolemy (100-170 A.D.) This ancient Greek astronomer theorized that Earth was the center of the universe, with the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars revolving around it. Called the Ptolemaic System, this theory was viewed as fact for the next 1,400 years, until Copernicus.

Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) Galileo invented a telescope that magnified things more than other telescopes at the time. With it he discovered four satellites around Jupiter, and looked at Earth’s own moon. This helped him prove Copernicus’s theory that all the planets orbit the Sun.

Omar Khayyam

“The Philosopher of the World”

60

Mathematician, astronomer, philosopher - titles that describe the various fields of expertise covered by Omar Khayyam. In 1070, Khayyam wrote the Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra which laid down the principles of algebra. His works also advanced the field of geometry significantly. Yet most will know him only by his poetry in the Rubaiyat. With a family name that means ‘tentmakers’, Omar Khayyam could have easily been just a tentmaker - good thing he was destined for greatness! His works and philosophies would reach the west and have great and lasting impact. In his most productive years he would rise to the position of advisor to Sultan Malik-Shah I. Unfortunately after the Sultan’s death, Omar Khayyam was only allowed to work as a court astrologer. He did, however, continue to teach mathematics for the next 39 years of his life. FUN FACTS: 1) Khayyam rejected any ass ociation with the title philosopher. 2) The Iranian calendar is larg ely based on his calculations. 3) His poems in the Rubaiyat consist of 4 lines of 13 syllables each with the rhyme scheme AABA or AAAA

Berlin

Athens

Berlin is the capital city of Germany.

There are 2380 miles between Kuwait City and Berlin, or 3829 kilometers.

It takes a minimum of 8 hours and 20 minutes to fly from one city to the other, with at least one stop.

68 Before you travel, make sure you have plenty of Euros to spend! The city’s main international airport is Berlin Tegel Airport, notable for its hexagonal main terminal building.

You might also wish to learn some simple German phrases.

Berlin’s rapid transit rail system is called the U-Bahn. It has 9 lines and 173 stations and carries 400 million passengers every year! It was first opened in 1902 and is mostly underground.

When in Berlin look out for the national flag, a tricolor of three horizontal bands consisting of the national colours of Germany: black, red and gold. March 2016

TRAVEL

Alternatively, you could use the S-Bahn, Berlin’s commuter rail system. This comprises 15 routes and 166 stations and is mostly overground.

DIARIES

Berlin also has a tram network consisting of 22 tram lines and 377 stops. Buses and ferries are also popular forms of transportation in Berlin.

69

Approximately 3.5 million people live in Berlin which is located in north-eastern Germany on the banks of the rivers Spree and Havel.

Be mindful of the climate. Summer can be hot and sometimes humid. Winter can be harsh with freezing temperatures.

Brandenburg Gate is the most popular tourist destination in Berlin. It is an 18th century triumphal arch standing 26 meters high and considered today as a symbol of European unity and peace.

The Reichstag Building is the seat of the German Parliament and is instantly recognisable by its famous glass dome. It was completed in 1894 but suffered extensive fire damage in 1933. Full restoration works were not carried out until 1990!

70

No trip to Berlin is complete without visiting the Berlin Wall. The wall acted as a barrier from 1961 to 1989, cutting off West Berlin from the rest of East Germany. Demolition took place between 1990 and 1992 but three sections are still standing. The outline of the wall is still visible in the ground; the best way to see it, and follow it, is by bicycle.

The Eastside Gallery is an international memorial for freedom. It is a 1.3km section of the Berlin Wall and consists of 105 paintings by different artists from around the world, on the East side of the wall.

You should also pay a visit to Checkpoint Charlie. This was a significant Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Checkpoint Charlie is often featured in movies and books. March 2016

The Holocaust Memorial is a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and another must-see in Berlin. It is made up of 2711 concrete slabs on a sloping field. It was inaugurated in May 2005, sixty years after the end of World War II.

You should also visit Charlottenburg Palace, the largest palace in Berlin. A large equestrian statue Museum Island is home to five major museums: Altes of Friedrich Wilhelm I stands in the palace (old), Neues (new), Alte Nationalgalerie (old national courtyard. The palace is a significant historic landmark and was first opened in 1699. gallery), Bode, and Pergamon. In 1999, the museum complex was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
