BUILD A FIZZ INFLATOR ‫المواد المطلوبة‬

What you need: One small empty plastic soda or water bottle

1/2 cup of vinegar

1.Carefully pour the vinegar into the bottle

‫صودا الخبز‬

‫قمع أو قطعة من الورق‬

2.This is the tricky part: Loosen up the balloon by stretching it a few times and then use the funnel to fill it a bit more than half way with baking soda. If you don’t have a funnel you can make one using the paper and some tape.

:‫هذا هو الجزء الذي يتطلب مهارة‬ ‫قم بتمديد البالون عدة مرات ومن‬ ‫ثم استخدم القمع لملء البالون‬ .‫أكثر قليال من نصفه بصودا الخبز‬ ‫إذا لم يكن لديك قمع يمكنك‬ .‫استخدام الورق والشريط الالصق‬ 3.Now carefully put the neck of the balloon all the way over the neck of the bottle without letting any baking soda into the bottle. 4. Ready? Lift the balloon up so that the baking soda falls from the balloon into the bottle and mixes with the vinegar. Watch the fizzinflator at work!

‫اآلن ضع بحرص عنق البالون على‬ ‫عنق الزجاجة دون السماح لصودا‬ .‫الخبز أن تسقط في الزجاجة‬ How does is work? The baking soda and the vinegar create an ACID-BASE reaction and the two chemicals work together to create a gas, (carbon dioxide) Gasses need a lot of room to spread out and the carbon dioxide starts to fill the bottle, and then moves into the balloon to inflate it.

For Your Eye-Q Why do we have tears?

Why do we blink?

Crying sometimes makes you feel better when you’re sad or upset, but the other reason we have tears is to clean and protect our eyes. Tears even have an ingredient that kills bacteria.

Blinking cleans the eyes and removes dust. When you blink, a thin layer of tears coats the eyes.

Optical Illusions Sometimes your eyes play tricks on you. The pictures on this page are called “optical illusions.”

Optical means vision. An illusion is something that isn’t what it seems to be. An optical illusion is something that plays tricks on your vision. Optical illusions teach us about ho w the eye and brain work together to create vision.

om and Kitty live a happy life beneath the Kuwait Towers with their two children, Jester and Honey. They have a lovely view of the Towers and the sea, they get to meet lots of new people every day and Tom is usually able to find plenty of fish for the family meals. One day, whilst the kittens were playing hide-and-seek in the rocks and Kitty was spending the afternoon with the neighbors, Tom went in search of something different for dinner.

Tom walked along the sand, stopping to investigate a bag of rubbish someone had left behind. “Yuk” said Tom. “That smells disgusting, even I wouldn’t eat that!” He proceeded along the beach, carefully lifting his paws to avoid stepping on drink cartons and cigarette ends lying in the sand.

Sometime later, he came across a box with a familiar red logo. “Chicken!” he gasped. The box was surrounded with other bits of

June 2015

25

rubbish which had gathered in a corner next to a small brick wall. His tummy rumbled at the thought of what might be in the box. He had to step over lots of other things to reach the box he wanted. It was getting very hot and he had to be careful not to burn his paws on the tin cans that had been lying in the sun. He was very thirsty but he remembered not to drink the water which had collected in a plastic container. “It could be poisonous” he said to himself.

26

He could see bits of glass from a broken bottle and had to concentrate really hard not to lose his balance and fall and cut himself. There was an old fishing net too. It smelled of fish which made his tummy rumble every louder but could be dangerous if he got tangled in it.

Finally, Tom reached the box with the red logo. He lifted the lid with this nose and discovered it was full of leftover chicken. He could hardly believe his luck. The only problem was how to get it home. It was too big for him to carry by himself but if he left it behind while he went to fetch Kitty, someone else would take it. He had wandered too far away from home so Kitty wouldn’t hear him if he called. “I’ll have to hide it” he said, looking around to find a suitable hiding space. Tom spotted a small gap underneath the rocks and decided to drag the box across the pile of

June 2015

rubbish, into the gap. It would be safe there until he came back with Kitty. In his haste to hide the

chicken, he forgot about the glass and stepped on a sharp fragment. He immediately dropped the box and yelped in pain. The glass was stuck in between his paws and the

cut was starting to bleed. Tom struggled to drag the box into the gap then limped back across the beach, dragging his injured foot behind him. Kitty was shocked to see Tom’s bleeding foot. She was also angry that he’d wandered so far away without telling her.

“Always let someone else know where you’re going” she said. “The same applies to you kittens” she said to Jester and Honey. “Your father has used up nearly all of his nine lives in one day!” “Are we going to fetch the chicken?” asked Jester a short time later.

www.kidzine.net

27

“No, it’s too dangerous” his mother replied. “Besides, fresh fish is much better for us than someone else’s leftovers. People leave all sorts of rubbish on the beach. It is very dangerous. We can get poisoned by eating it, strangled by getting tangled in it and injured by stepping on it. Your father is lucky, the glass has gone from his foot and the cut will get better. Some cats are not so lucky. As long as people continue to drop litter and spoil our beautiful home, we must be very careful indeed”. 28

Mom knows best ‫أمي تعرف األفضل‬

Rizwan was hungry. He had just returned home from school and went straight to the kitchen to find something to eat. His mom had left him an apple with a note to say she would be home soon. He poured himself a glass of milk to drink with his fruit. As he put the milk back in the fridge, he saw a chocolate bar on the top shelf. He knew he wasn’t supposed to eat chocolate in between meals but he was so hungry and it would be so much nicer than a piece of fruit. Without hesitating, he put the apple in his school bag and took the chocolate.

The chocolate was delicious but he couldn’t concentrate on his homework. He kept thinking of the movie he wanted to see at the weekend, the new Avengers poster in his bedroom and the red football boots he’d seen at the mall.

Half an hour later, his mom returned. “Hello Rizwan” she said, “how was your day at school?” “OK thanks mom” he said. “Did you eat the fruit I left for you?” she asked. Rizwan immediately felt guilty. “Yes thank you” he said. He felt himself blush with shame. He didn’t mean to lie to his mom but he knew she would be angry if he told her he’d eaten the chocolate.

Rizwan was still struggling to finish his homework when his mom asked him to set the table for dinner. As he picked up his school bag, the apple fell on to the floor. “What’s this?” asked his mom as she picked up the apple. “I didn’t eat it” said Rizwan looking down at the floor. “I ate the chocolate bar instead”.

His mom was very angry. Not only had Rizwan not done as she had asked but he had lied to her as well. “You may think chocolate tastes nicer than fruit Rizwan but it is bad for you and bad for your teeth and it will spoil your appetite before dinner. Fruit is also better for your brain” she said, looking at his unfinished homework on the table.

Rizwan realized his mom was right. If he had eaten the fruit instead of the chocolate he may have concentrated better on his homework. He also realized that instead of looking forward to the chicken his mom was preparing for dinner, he was not hungry at all. To make matters worse, his mom told him he would have to use his pocket money to replace the chocolate which she had bought as a treat for his father. 34

Rizwan had learned his lesson. He apologized to his mom and she helped him finish his homework. Next time he would do as he was told and eat the fruit.

NAILS

‫األظافر‬

What are nails? Nails are made in folds of the skin near the ends of our fingers and toes. They start to grow in the nail root (the part of the nail that is still underneath the skin) and then they slide out over the nail bed towards the end of the toes and fingers. Near the end of the nail it separates from the skin underneath it, where the nail colour changes from pink to white.

‫ما هي األظافر؟‬

Your fingernails grow about 2½ millimeters every month and your toenails grow about 1 millimeter each month. Because toenails grow more slowly, you do not have to cut them as often as you need to cut your fingernails.

Nails look pink because of the network of tiny blood vessels underneath which feed the nail bed. The nails themselves do not need any food. They are 'dead'.

Injuring a nail

If you hit a nail hard (maybe you hit it with a hammer or shut a door on it) you can get bleeding under the nail, making a bruise. This can be very painful. • The dark mark of the blood will stay there, moving along the nail bed with the nail until it gets to the end of the finger. It can be several months before the mark goes away. • If it is too painful, you could go and see your doctor who may make a hole in the nail to let the blood out (sounds gross…but it can feel so good for the blood to drain away). • Sometimes the nail falls off!! The new nail may be misshapen for a while, but eventually it becomes normal again.

Fingernails are a breeding ground for bacteria. The germs that live under your nails are easily transferred to your eyes, nose and mouth. It is therefore important to scrub the dirt out from under your nails before bedtime.

GAMING CLUB

Hey guys, it’s me Max. I’m returning to the gaming club and today we are going to talk about FIFA Ultimate Team also known as FUT which is one of the newest video game releases.

50

June 2015

FIFA Ultimate team (FUT), which was introduced in FIFA 13, returns in FIFA 14 and 15. The game mode allows players to build their own team from real world players and staff, which they can then use to compete in both online and offline tournaments and divisions. FUT also allows for a ‘single online match’, where a player can play a single match against another player which does not contribute to tournaments or seasons. As players play both online and offline matches, they earn coins to spend on improving their team. Each game earns a certain amount of coins depending on whether they win, lose or draw. Players and other items are acquired in the form of cards, which are obtained through buying packs, or buying directly from other players through the transfer option. There are three different tiers of cards (bronze, silver and gold), indicating the quality of the players. Packs also come in bronze, silver and gold. There are also Special Packs, which feature rare cards. Packs can be purchased with coins, which are earned through playing FUT matches, or with FIFA points, which must be purchased with real world money. Players can also edit kit numbers and player roles for set pieces and can change the style of play of any given player. FUT seasons have been extended from the five divisions available in FIFA 13, to ten in FIFA 14 and 15. The Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of FIFA 14 feature exclusive FUT content called ‘Legends’. When purchasing Gold Packs, players can randomly acquire famous players from the past, such as Ruud Gullit, Dennis Bergkamp, Pelé, Patrick Vieira, Gary Lineker and Freddie Ljungberg. Until next time, enjoy learning and playing old and new video consoles and games.

Hi Kids! Hope you enjoyed my lesson last month and took lots of photos. This month I will teach you the next lesson which is about the background of your photos.

2. Check your Backgrounds A very simple concept that can enhance an image is to check out the background of a shot to check for clutter or distraction. Remember always to scan the background (and the foreground) of an image quickly and to change your frame if there’s too many distractions – otherwise your shots will end up like mine used to with all kinds of objects growing out of the heads of those I was photographing.

52

So, try to use clear backgrounds for your photos. I hope you will try this simple concept and take some good photos.

Ants ‫النمل‬

Ants have been able to survive on earth for more than 100 million years and with over 20,000 different species of ants, they can be found anywhere in the world. Below are some facts and information on these amazing social insects which are related to wasps and bees.

54

There are three different kinds of ants. The queen is the first kind and she has one purpose – to mate. She spends her entire life laying eggs. The second kind of ant is the male who mates with the queen. Males don’t live very long; their average life expectancy is 45-60 days. The third kind of ant is the female worker. She cannot produce young but she builds the mounds and supplies the colony with food.

Most ants build some type of mound to live in. Many dig their mounds in the dirt or sand. Some use twigs to make them stronger. Some ants live in fallen logs or trees. Most ants build a system of tunnels under their mound which connect the rooms, or chambers, they use for specific purposes. Some of the chambers are used to store food and some are used as nurseries. The rooms are used as resting places for the workers.

John Baird

Inventor of the Television John Baird was born on August 13th 1888 in Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Scotland. He took a course in electrical engineering at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College (now called Strathclyde University) and studied towards his Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Glasgow; although his studies were disrupted by the outbreak of World War 1.

58

During the 1920s John Baird, together with an American named Clarence W. Hansell, patented the idea of using arrays of transparent rods to transmit images for television. Baird's 30 line images were the first demonstrations of television by reflected light rather than back-lit silhouettes. He based his technology initially on a scanning disk idea and then later, on developments in electronics. He created the first televised pictures of objects in motion in 1924 and the first televised human face in 1925. A year later, in 1926, he televised the first moving object image at the Royal Institution in London. His 1928 transatlantic transmission of the image of a human face was a broadcasting milestone.

June 2015

Baird also demonstrated colour television, stereoscopic television and television by infra-red light, all before 1930.

He successfully lobbied for broadcast time with the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) who began broadcasting television on the Baird 30-line system in 1929.

In 1936, the BBC adopted television service using the electronic television technology of Marconi-EMI (the world's first regular high resolution service - 405 lines per picture). It was that technology that eventually took over from Baird's innovative system.

John Baird died on June 14th 1946 in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, England but the television pioneer will always be remembered for his invention of the mechanical television system. www.kidzine.net

You are amazing! Hi, my beautiful happy kids. Today’s quote is a very interesting and meaningful one. Please make sure to read it whist enjoying a cup of warm milk, fresh juice or maybe a cup of chamomile.

78

This month’s Quote: “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf” ~Jon Zenn So, life is beautiful as we all know; but difficulties still sometimes occur. For example, exams, studies, disagreements with your friends, mom and dad, sisters and brothers or issues with health etc. When you face these difficulties, as a smart and strong kid, you have to face them with a positive power and believe that things will be alright! Don’t ever give up; always try to cope with the situation, use your smart brain and your smile to make the best of it. Instead of saying “studying is so hard”, make a plan to turn studying into a more joyful experience. This applies to every difficult situation you may face in your life. You are smart! You’re an amazing kid and you know it! We love you!

When is Ramadan?

What is Ramadan?

The Muslim calendar is a Lunar Calendar, which means that the month follows the cycles of the moon. This also means that by comparison to the western calendar, the month of Ramadan will be approximately 11 days earlier in the year compared to the previous year. Ramadan in Kuwait will start on the 18th of June 2015, Thursday and will continue until the 16th of July.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, preceded by the month of Sha'aban and succeeded by the month of Shawwal. Ramadan is the Holy Month for Muslims, when those twelve years old and above observe a dawn to dusk complete fast. They do not take any liquids (not even any water), no food, abstain from smoking, and gossiping or saying anything malicious against another person.

84

June 2015

Why do Muslims fast during Ramadan? The first reason of course, is that fasting is a requirement of one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The Arabic word for fasting means to 'refrain', to discipline yourself to avoid doing certain things which would be quite normal during the other twelve months of the year. It is also meant to teach Muslims to appreciate how much better off they are than millions of other fellow Muslims. So by refraining from drinking and eating, for the long daylight hours, they should be reminded of those much less fortunate, for whom severe shortage of water and food is a way of life, not something merely done one month of the year. By reminding themselves of this fact, it is hoped that not only will they be more sensitive to those less fortunate, but to try to do something practical to help them.

Can younger children fast during Ramadan? Indeed they can, and in fact many even as young as four or five, are encouraged to fast for a few hours a day during Ramadan, to begin to appreciate the significance of the Holy month. As they get a little older, most families encourage their children under 12 to fast for half a day, until they reach twelve years old, when all Muslim children are expected to fast for the full dawn to dusk period. 85

Educating Kids About Litter There’s no denying the fact that litter is a problem in Kuwait. Waste is rarely disposed of properly and it’s not just unsightly, it’s hazardous. Teaching kids to dispose of litter properly is vital and leading by example is probably the most effective method of doing so. If children see their parents and teachers throwing their rubbish in a bin, they are more likely to copy the habit and do the same themselves. The Wombles, an animated kid’s TV series from the 1970s, saw the cuddly characters collecting litter and recycling rubbish from their Wimbledon Common habitat. Similarly, English shopkeeper Yvonne Froud insists that children write their name on any crisps and sweets they buy from her,

as a deterrent. Maybe we should all do the same? The key to a successful anti-litter campaign is Education, Enforcement and Engineering. Education is self-explanatory but teaching alone won’t solve the problem; enforcement June 2015

is vital to avoid the bad habit returning. Some kind of penalty is therefore necessary and parents and teachers should consider what they think is an acceptable penalty. Finally, engineering (or infrastructure) must make it easy and convenient to dispose of litter. Try keeping a rubbish bag in your car – this will remove the temptation of throwing litter out of the window; and encourage kids to hold onto their rubbish until they see a bin – it won’t be far away. Adults are just as guilty of dropping litter as kids so we need to start early and educate the younger generation to understand the importance of disposing of our waste correctly. These are the main areas of concern: Human Health and Safety – Materials left to rot provide a fertile breeding ground in which bacteria thrive. Similarly, stagnant water can sit in bottles or tins – ideal for mosquitoes to breed. This increases the risk of disease. There is also the risk of stepping or falling onto sharp objects which could cause serious injury.

soon grow into a much bigger area as people will think it’s acceptable to drop litter there. Fire Hazard – It is wrong to drop cigarettes in the street but particularly hazardous if they are not extinguished. Kuwait is not an ashtray! Also, waste which accumulates below seats or in doorways can encourage a fire to spread more quickly. The main culprits for dropping litter appear to be those who chew gum, smoke cigarettes and eat fast food. Would they be so careless if they realized the impact their waste was having on the environment? Rats and pigeons thrive on fast food waste, increasing both their population and the spread of disease. Let’s work together to eradicate this problem. Litter – it’s in the bag!!

Impact on Wildlife – Creatures from both land and water dwellings are at risk from our waste. They could get tangled in it and eventually die. They may eat it and poison themselves or it could get stuck causing them to choke or die from starvation. Dogs or cats could also cut and injure themselves. Economy – The sight of lots of litter can deter visitors and tourists. Who wants to visit a country that’s littered with waste? This has a negative effect on the economy. Appearance – The accumulation of waste can be unsightly and dirty and will often smell bad too. One small area of waste can www.kidzine.net
