‫صنع صاروخ بالوني‬

You will need 14

1 balloon (round ones will work, but the longer ‘airship’ balloons work best) 1 long piece of kite string (about 10-15 feet long) 1 plastic straw Tape

What to do

1. Tie one end of the string to a chair, door knob, or other support. 2. Put the other end of the string through the straw. 3. Pull the string tight and tie it to another support in the room. 4. Blow up the balloon (but don’t tie it). Pinch the end of the balloon and tape the balloon to the straw as shown above. You’re ready for launch. 5. Let go and watch the rocket fly!

How does it work?

So how does it work? It’s all about the air…and thrust. As the air rushes out of the balloon, it creates a forward motion called THRUST. Thrust is a pushing force created by energy. In the balloon experiment, our thrust comes from the energy of the balloon forcing the air out. Different sizes and shapes of balloon will create more or less thrust. In a real rocket, thrust is created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rocket’s engine – as the engines blast down, the rocket goes up!

Did you know there are different types of rocks?

Sedimentary Rock They are made from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other material. When you combine these particles they are called sediment. Gradually, the sediment accumulates in layers and over a long period of time hardens into rock. Usually it is the only type of rock that contain fossils. Can you think of a place where this type of rock can be found? 15

Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic rocks form beneath the surface of the earth, they change or metamorphosis from the intense heat and pressure. They have ribbonlike layers. Some of them have shiny crystals on their surface. Can you think of a place where this type of rock can be found?

Igneous Rock Deep inside the earth rocks are melted or molten and become magma. When magma comes out of a volcano it is called lava. When magma and lava cool down they form igneous rock. When the lava or magma cool quickly the rock will look smooth and shiny. When lava or magma cool slowly the rocks will have plenty of texture, gas bubbles, tiny holes and spaces. Can you think of a place where this type of rock can be found?

Did You Know? Animals see the world very differently than we do.

Dogs Probably the biggest misconception about animal vision is the belief that dogs see the world only in shades of grey. Though they see a different spectrum of colors than humans, dogs do have the ability to perceive colors. Because they have only two types of color-sensing cells in their eyes (humans have three), dogs see mostly yellow, blue and gray tones. Remember that when shopping for dog toys!

22

Goldfish These common household pets have surprisingly good vision. Goldfish can see the same spectrum of colors that we can, plus ultraviolet light. They can be trained to respond to visual signals and often learn to recognize the person who feeds them. But because they have no eyelids, goldfish are very sensitive to changes from darkness to brightness.

Cats Feline eyes are designed for hunting and are adept at detecting small, quick movements of potential prey. Cats also have terrific night vision — their oval-shaped pupils can widen and narrow very quickly to control how much light comes into their eyes. Next time your cat is about to pounce on a toy, watch his pupils enlarge to make sure he doesn't miss a single movement.

Horses

Because their eyeballs are set on the sides of their heads, horses have an amazingly wide field of vision — nearly 350 degrees. This is typical of "flight animals." Having so much peripheral vision lets them spot potential predators that are stalking them. However, horses have a "blind spot" right in front of their faces. Because of this, jumping horses need a signal from their rider to know when to leap over a hurdle. Their other blind spot is behind the tail, which is why horses are easily spooked if you approach them quietly from behind.

23

Dolphins Dolphins can move each eye independently and can process two different images at once. According to The Dolphin Institute, dolphins can see as well underwater as they can in the air. Because their environment has lots of predators and they need to surface to breathe air, dolphins sleep with one eye open. This allows half of their brain to sleep while the other half stays alert.

A Girl’s Best Friend by: Gill Sherry

Anisa and her little Yorkshire Terrier were inseparable. Everywhere Anisa went, Piper went too. Every weekend, they would play in the garden or take long walks along the beach or in the park. When they returned home, they would sit together, Piper always content to have her ears rubbed and her tummy tickled. During the week, when Anisa had to go to school, Piper would wait patiently for her friend to come home, and wag her tail excitedly when she heard her skipping along the garden path. Sometimes, Anisa’s mom would have to prize the dog from her daughter’s arms. “You can’t take her to the mall Anisa” she would say, “Dogs aren’t allowed to go shopping”. Reluctantly, Anisa would leave Piper behind, but not before she begged one last time to take her with them. “Oh please mom, she can wait for us in the car, she doesn’t like being left behind”. 24

“It’s far too hot to leave her in the car Anisa. How would you like to sit inside the car for hours at a time in this heat?” She knew her mother was right but it broke her heart to leave her little friend behind. One morning, the two of them were playing on the beach. Anisa was throwing sticks and Piper was running as fast as her little legs would carry her, fetching the sticks, her tail wagging frantically behind her. The sun was gaining heat as it rose higher in the sky

January 2016

and they were beginning to feel tired from their exertions. “Come on Piper, we’d better be getting home” said Anisa. They walked together across the sand, occasionally dipping their feet in the gentle waves which were lapping up on the shore. Anisa was thirsty and chastised herself for forgetting to bring a bottle of water on their walk. Deciding to take a short cut, she jumped up onto the rocks, intending to step over the wall which separated the beach from the long path home. As she turned around and gestured for Piper to follow, she lost her balance and tumbled over onto the rocks, landing awkwardly with a sickening thud. She cried out in pain and realized she couldn’t move her left leg which was twisted underneath her. Sensing her distress, Piper began to tremble, then licked the tears from her face as though to kiss her better. “You need to get help Piper” said Anisa through her sobs, “I think I’ve broken my leg”. But the little dog didn’t move, she just nestled herself between the rocks and her friend’s comforting warmth. Clearly, Piper had no intention of leaving her side. Anisa looked up and down the beach but there was not a soul in sight. “No-one else is silly enough to walk around in this heat” she said to Piper, wishing once again she had a bottle of water. She also wished she had her mobile phone but she was always afraid she might lose it or drop it in the sea, so as usual, she’d left it behind. She tried to maneuver herself so she could peer over the top of the rocks but her leg was so painful she could barely move. Feeling helpless, she once again began to cry. This time, Piper joined in, and was soon whimpering in sympathy with her best friend. The whimpers then turned into yaps and before long, Piper was jumping around in agitation, barking as loud as she

could. Anisa realized it was the dog’s way of attracting attention and she encouraged her little friend to carry on. “Good girl Piper’’ she said enthusiastically, “What a clever girl you are!” After a few minutes, she heard voices and could just about make out an adult conversation from the other side of the wall. Whoever was there, was clearly wondering what the little dog was making so much fuss about. “Help!” shouted Anisa, “I’m down here!” A minute later, Anisa saw two people clambering over the rocks, looking down at her from their elevated position. Seeing her damaged leg, they immediately called for help from their mobile phone then sat with her until an ambulance arrived. They gave her some water and comforted Piper who wouldn’t move from her spot beside Anisa. “What a clever dog you have” said the lady, “you must love her very much”. “Oh, I do” answered Anisa, “She’s my best friend in the whole wide world”. Later that evening, with a home full of concerned visitors, she began to tell the story of how little Piper had saved her life. “I don’t think your life was in danger Anisa” said her mother, chuckling at her daughter’s exaggeration. “Although it could have been a lot more serious if that nice couple hadn’t found you when they did. How many times have I told you not to go walking without a bottle of water? And next time you go out, make sure you take your mobile phone”. “I know, I’m sorry mom” she replied, trying to shift her leg which was now covered from ankle to thigh in a huge white plaster cast. “But Piper did save me, she was brilliant!” In response, the little terrier jumped up onto Anisa’s lap and covered her with doggy kisses. Everyone in the room began to laugh, including her mother who joked, “Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, clearly never met little Piper!” www.kidzine.net

Radioactive!: How Irène Curie and Lise Meitner Revolutionized Science and Changed the World by Winifred Conkling

In 1934, Irène Curie, working with her husband and fellow scientist, Frederic Joliot, made a discovery that would change the world: artificial radioactivity. This breakthrough allowed scientists to modify elements and create new ones by altering the structure of atoms. Curie shared a Nobel Prize with her husband for their work. But when she was nominated to the French Academy of Sciences, the academy denied her admission and voted to disqualify all women from membership. Four years later, Curie’s breakthrough led physicist Lise Meitner to a brilliant leap of understanding that unlocked the secret of nuclear fission.

Calcium

The Teen Bone Builder

Boushahri_clinic

Calcium is the top macromineral when it comes to your bones. This mineral helps build strong bones, so you can do everything from standing up straight to scoring that winning goal. It also helps build strong, healthy teeth, for chomping on tasty food. Milk and other calcium-rich foods are a must-have in kids' diets. After all, calcium is a key building block for strong, healthy bones. But most kids aged 9 to 18 don't get the recommended 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day.

What Calcium Does During childhood and adolescence, the body uses the mineral calcium to build strong bones — a process that's all but complete by the end of the teen years. Bone calcium begins to decrease in young adulthood and progressive loss of bone occurs as we age. 34

Teens, especially girls, whose diets don't provide the nutrients to build bones to their maximum potential are at greater risk of developing the bone disease osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures from weakened bones. Younger kids and babies who don't get enough calcium and vitamin D (which aids in calcium absorption) are at increased risk for rickets. Rickets is a bone-softening disease that causes severe bowing of the legs, poor growth, and sometimes muscle pain and weakness. When kids get enough calcium and physical activity during childhood and the teen years, they can start out their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. For optimal bone health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends: 1 to 3 years old — 700 milligrams of calcium daily 4 to 8 years old — 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily 9 to 18 years old — 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily

Did you know? About 40% of bone mass (which is the weight and thickness of our bones) is built during the early teen years, making it the most important time in life to eat foods that include bone-building nutrients like calcium and vitamin D, and to do bone-building activities like running and jumping. January 2016

Good Sources of Calcium Of course, milk and other dairy products are good sources of calcium, and most contain added vitamin D, which is also important for bone health. But don't overlook other healthy calcium-fortified foods, including orange juice, soy products, and bread. Here are some dairy and nondairy products that provide quite a bit of this vital nutrient.

35

www.kidzine.net

Calcium is necessary for life. The body uses bone as a place to store calcium, and therefore whenever the body needs calcium, it takes it from your bones. To understand what happens to your bones, think of your bones as a money box for calcium. What happens if you do not put very much money in your money box but you keep taking money out of it? Your savings get smaller and smaller. The same is true with the calcium in your body. If you don’t get enough calcium in your diet every day, if you don’t put very much calcium in your bone bank or, if your body takes more calcium out of your bone bank than you put in, your bone bank will also decrease. When you are 9-19 years old, eating foods with calcium will help you grow the strongest bones possible.

Ideas for calcium-rich foods at each meal:

36

Breakfast: lPour low-fat or fat-free milk over your breakfast cereal. lHave a cup of low-fat or fat-free yogurt. lDrink a glass of orange juice with added calcium. lAdd low-fat or fat-free milk instead of water to oatmeal and hot cereal. Lunch: lAdd low-fat or fat-free cheese to a sandwich. lHave a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk instead of soda. lHave pizza or macaroni and cheese. lAdd low-fat or fat-free milk instead of water to tomato soup. Snack: lMake a smoothie with fruit, ice, and low-fat or fat-free milk. lTry flavored low-fat or fat-free milk such as chocolate or strawberry. lHave a low-fat or fat-free frozen yogurt. lTry some pudding made with low-fat or fat-free milk. lDip fruits and vegetables into yogurt. lHave some low-fat or fat-free string cheese. Dinner: lMake a salad with dark green, leafy vegetables. lServe broccoli or cooked, dry beans as a side dish. lTop salads, soups, and stews with low-fat shredded cheese. lToss tofu with added calcium into stir fry and other dishes.

Did you know? Girls’ bones grow the fastest between the ages of 11 and 14 and boys’ bones grow fastest between the ages of 13 and 17. By age 20 the skeleton is almost complete. January 2016

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. It is not, however, very close, since it is 36 million miles, or 58 million kilometres away from the Sun!

The distances of planets from each other and from the Sun are often measured in Astronomical Units, AU. One AU is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun, 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometres. Using this system of measurement, Mercury is 0.39 AU from the Sun.

Mercury is one of five planets that can be seen without using a telescope. The others are Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. When you look at the sky at night, the planets do not twinkle in the way that stars do. Mercury is not very easy to see, but it can be seen low in the west just after sunset or in the east just before dawn. About once every ten or fifteen years Mercury can be seen crossing the Sun. At this point its orbit has come between the Sun and the Earth. This event is known as a transit. When watching any event near the Sun a proper filter must be used to protect the sight. With this filter Mercury can be seen as a tiny black dot slowly passing across the Sun. You must never try to look directly at the Sun without a filter.

“What’s for Dinner?” I was always a picky eater. I often drove my mom mad with my refusal to eat meals she had spent all day preparing and cooking for the family. One day she had finally had enough. My mom woke me up early on a Friday morning and announced, “Today you will cook dinner. You will prepare the food, cook it, serve it, and last but not least clean the kitchen and dishes after everyone is done eating.” I just went back to sleep, and less than a minute later I had a bucket of cold water tossed on me! Mom was serious. Wide awake I went to the kitchen and started to see what I could make for dinner…

The violin is one of the primary instruments in classical music and orchestras. The modern day style violin was first made near the start of the European Renaissance in the 1500s. Prior to that there had been other stringed instruments that used a bow to vibrate the strings such as the lyra and the rebec from the middle ages.

The Violin Family There are four main instruments in the violin family. They all have similar shapes, use a similar bow, and are played in a similar fashion. The main difference is in the size of the instrument which affects the range of notes they can play. The larger the instrument, the lower the range of notes.

44

Cremona, Italy Andrea Amati built his violins in Cremona, Italy where he and his sons would also apprentice some of the world's finest violin makers. As a result, Cremona is the home of the violin and the place where the world's greatest violins were crafted.

First Violin It is thought that the first violin to have four strings and closely resemble the modern violin was built by Italian Andrea Amati in 1555. The violin became very popular and the King of France at the time, Charles IX, had Amati build him 24 violins. The oldest surviving violin is one of these 24 violins and is called the Charles IX. January 2016

Here they are from smallest to largest: Violin - The smallest and most popular of the family. The violin has the highest pitch. Viola - Slightly larger than the violin, the viola has a lower pitch. It's played in the same manner as the violin.

Cello - The cello is quite a bit larger than the viola. Cello players sit down the play the

cello resting the bottom of the cello, a metal spike, on the ground.

Double Bass - The double bass is the largest and lowest pitch member of the violin family. Musicians stand to play the double bass with the bottom resting on the ground. Often the double bass is plucked to create a deep bass sound often used in folk music and jazz.

Famous Violin Makers Over the next 100 years the violin would become a very popular instrument throughout all of Europe. The construction and art of building violins would reach its peak in the 1600's with the two most famous violin makers, the Guarneri and the Stradivari family of violin makers (also called luthiers). They were both located in Cremona, Italy and both learned from the Amati school of violin craftsmanship. These musical instruments are still considered the best ever made. They are very much in demand by the top violinists in the world and a Stradivari violin, nicknamed The Hammer, sold for $3.5 million in 2006.

Changing of the Violin Over the years the violin has gone through changes of design to end up with the current construction and dimensions. The first violins had a shorter and thicker neck. The bridge was flatter and the finger board shorter as well. Many of the changes were made to allow for a higher pitch as well as to produce more volume for orchestras.

Fun Facts about the History of the Violin

lThe name violin comes from the Latin word vitula, which means stringed instrument. lA musician who plays the violin is called a violinist or fiddler. lThe violin is the highest pitched instrument in the string section of an orchestra. lIt is customary to finish a violin song with a downbow. lAntonio Stradivari started out as an apprentice to Andrea Amati's grandson, Nicolo Amati. lIn the 20th century the first electric violin was invented. lEven though people try to recreate exactly what Stradivari did to craft a violin, no one has been able to match

the older violins in tone and quality. This may be due to the materials and varnishes available. lMost violinists consider a machine made violin to be nowhere near the quality of a hand crafted one built by a true luthier. www.kidzine.net

Reindeer Make a Paper Plate

A popular way to measure and treasure your child’s physical growth is by making handprints as keepsakes. This activity spotlights everyone’s favorite reindeer, Rudolph, and preseves your child's handprints in his "antlers". While embarking upon this nifty winter project, your child will utilize manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and hand/wrist flexibility.

What You Need:

46

lSmall paper plate

lPair of googly eyes

lLarge paper plate

lScissors

lBrown acrylic paint

lStapler

lPaint sponge or wide brush

lPen

lLarge red pom-pom, 1 ½”

lHole punch

lBrown craft foam

lRibbon or yarn

lTan craft foam or felt

lLow temperature glue gun

January 2016

Instructions: 1. Start by asking your child to paint both plates with a coat of brown paint. Set them aside to dry for a couple of hours. 2. Meanwhile, make the reindeer’s antlers. Trace your child’s left and right hands twice on brown craft foam. 3. Ask your child to carefully cut both pairs of handprints out. 4 . Next, ask your child to draw two ears on the tan craft foam or felt and cut them out. Those will be the inner section of the reindeer’s ears. 5. Using the tan cutouts as a guideline, your child can make a larger set by drawing around those shapes about half an inch wider all the way around. Have him cut those out and set them aside. 6. When the paint is dry, ask your youngster to glue the googly eyes onto the large plate.

47

7. Then, instruct him to glue the red pom-pom onto the smaller plate as shown. 8. Now it’s time to add the antlers. Have your child glue one antler to another and then to the back of the large plate using hot glue. Each side should have two pairs of adorable handprint antlers. 9. Add the ears to the rim of the large plate with a dot of hot glue. 10. Glue the tan pieces onto the brown pieces with another dot of hot glue. 11. Assist your child in punching two holes at the top of the plate and thread ribbon or yarn through the holes and tie a knot. 12. Pick a place in the house where your new reindeer can be prominently hung and displayed for all to enjoy!

Did you know? Unlike other species of deer, both male and female reindeer have antlers. They shed their antlers during the winter because doing so enables them to better camouflage themselves and avoid predators such as wolves, coyote and bears. www.kidzine.net

Alfred Nobel Inventor of Dynamite

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator and armaments manufacturer famed for his invention of dynamite. Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1833. He learned the basic principles of explosives from his father at a young age and at school, he excelled at chemistry and languages. In addition to his native tongue, he went on to become fluent in French, German, English and Russian. At the age of 18, he went to the United States and studied chemistry for four years. He later returned to Sweden, 54

devoting himself to the study of explosives, in particular, the safe manufacture and use of nitroglycerine. Nobel filed his first patent, for a gas meter, in 1857. He invented a detonator in 1863 and in 1865, designed the blasting cap; a small sensitive primary explosive device generally used to detonate a larger, more powerful and less sensitive secondary explosive.

January 2016

In 1864, a shed used for the preparation of nitroglycerin, exploded at a factory in Stockholm, killing five people, including Nobel's younger brother. More minor incidents occurred but despite this, Nobel went on to build further factories, focusing on improving the stability of the explosives he was developing. Nobel invented dynamite in 1867, a substance easier and safer to handle than the more unstable nitroglycerin. Dynamite was patented in the US and the UK and was used extensively in mining and the building of transport networks internationally.

In 1875, Nobel invented gelignite, more stable and powerful than dynamite and in 1887, patented ballistite, a predecessor of cordite. Nobel held 350 different patents, dynamite being the most famous.

He died in Italy in December 1896, aged 63 but is buried in Stockholm. He left most of his wealth in trust, in order to fund the awards that would later become known as the Nobel Prizes.

Magyar (pronounced /Mawdyar/), as the Hungarians call their language, is spoken by the approximately 11 million inhabitants of Hungary, as well as another 4 million people in neighboring countries and a million others scattered around the world. It belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family, which includes Finnish and Estonian, but its closest relatives are several obscure languages spoken in Siberia.

Consonants The following are pronounced and written as in English: b, d, f, g, h, k, l, m, n, p, r, t, v, z Notes: g is always hard as in 'gun', never soft as in 'gem' r is rolled off the tongue, though not really trilled t is pronounced with the tongue touching the back of the teeth (dental)

58

The following consonants are pronounced and/or spelled differently than in English, and require special attention:

Numbers 1 to 10 Here is how you count to ten in Hungarian:

Egy - 1 Ketto" (két before a noun) -2 Három - 3 c is pronounced like the ts in 'bats' Négy - 4 cs is the English ch as in 'check' Öt - 5 gy is one sound pronounced like dy, or the d in 'adulation' Hat - 6 j, ly are both pronounced as y like 'yes' Hét - 7 ny is pronounced like the Spanish ñ and like the ni in the English word 'onion' Nyolc - 8 Kilenc - 9 s Be careful! This is always pronounced like sh as in 'shun' and 'ship' Tíz - 10 sz like a regular English s as in 'sell', never pronounced as a z like 'rose' ty a soft t sound, pronounced much as it looks; say 'at your' fast zs like the s in 'pleasure' The letters q, w, x, y are not Hungarian and appear only in foreign words or in some family names. The English sound /j/ as in 'jet' appears in foreign words and is spelled dzs in Hungarian. Note: Double consonants are pronounced long, like the final and initial /k/ sound in 'book-case'. When a double consonant occurs at the end of a word, try to linger on the sound slightly. With consonants like gy, ny, ty, sz etc. only the first letter of the cluster is doubled (ssz, ggy, etc.) January 2016

GAMING CLUB Mega

Man

Hey guys, it’s me Max. I hope you had a wonderful New Year’s Eve. This month, I am going to talk about Mega Man. Mega Man, known as Rockman in Japan, is a video game franchise from Capcom, starring the robot character Mega Man, or one of his many counterparts. Mega Man, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, began a series of over 50 games on multiple systems. As of 31st March 2015, the series had sold approximately thirty million copies worldwide, and is often cited as one of the most renowned video game franchises of all time. The classic Mega Man series consists of ten main titles including the original game, as well as all Game Boy and PC titles featuring the original design of Mega Man. The classic series is considered to be the origin of the story, with Mega Man being the first instalment, and continuing with ten direct sequels. Chronologically after Mega Man 8 comes Mega Man & Bass, followed by Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. 60

Although the classic series has yet to reach an ending, the storyline shifts to the Mega Man X series, followed by the Mega Man Zero series, Mega Man ZX and Mega Man Legends. Although it is confirmed that the Legends series takes place sometime in the distant future after the ZX series, there is uncertainty as to when it actually takes place. All series follow one continuous timeline except for Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force, which exist in an alternate universe (one in which network technology flourished instead of robotics technology), with Star Force occurring two centuries after the Battle Network series. In the story behind the original series, Mega Man is an android called Rock, created as a lab assistant by the scientist Dr. Light. Following treachery by Dr. Wily, Rock was converted into a battle robot to defend the world from Wily's violent robotic threats. Thus he becomes Mega Man. Beginning on the PlayStation in 1997, a 3D action game series called Mega Man Legends was created to take advantage of the console's advanced graphics hardware. This series is in the same world as the other games, though thousands of years in the future. Immense bodies of water, marked by a re-occurrence of several major characters from the original series in different situations, cover the world. The hero, Mega Man (Rock) Volnutt, is a relic hunter who scavenges various ruins laden throughout the world in search of refractor shards that can be mined and traded as currency. Mega Man Legends brings the gameplay into 3D and is an action adventure with role-playing game elements. The Legends series concluded with only two main titles and a spin-off starring mainstay antagonist Tron Bonne before being seemingly discontinued. Unlike Battle Network and Zero, the final title in the series does not resolve the storyline. October 2016 January 2015

For the past 14 years, a continuation to the Legends series has become an oftrequested title among many Capcom and Mega Man fans. A third title was once under development for the Nintendo 3DS, but in July 2011, Capcom cancelled the project saying it did not meet certain requirements. This decision was met with mass criticism from gamers and gaming news outlets. Despite the fact that the no new games in the series had been released in years, various characters from the Legends series consistently appear in Capcom cross-over titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom. Also, the Servbot characters have become iconic within the Capcom community, making many cameo appearances in non-Mega Man titles such as Dead Rising. In 2002, a follow-up series to the Mega Man X franchise was developed for the Game Boy Advance which starred Zero, a character from Mega Man X. The series revolved around Zero battling a powerful human-supremacy force as he protects the oppressed remaining reploids. In the Mega Man Zero series, the gameplay is largely similar to Zero's play style in the later Mega Man X titles and features an in-depth ranking system that rewards the player with new abilities and enhancements (such as copied abilities from boss characters) in exchange for better play performance. In the fourth title, Zero can also physically steal weapons from enemies (such as axes and guns). Mega Man Zero was, with its fourth title, the first series in the franchise to reach a definitive conclusion, although its storyline continues in the distant future with Mega Man ZX. Anyway, that’s it for this month. Next month, I’ll talk about Star Fox. Good-bye and stay fresh.

Math Giants is a multi-column series highlighting the biggest mathematicians of all time.

by: Jim West

Einstein “The Genius”

A young Einstein didn’t speak his first word until 3 years old. He was a slow talker until 9 years old and his parents thought he had a mental handicap. Boy were they wrong! Einstein’s love of math and science began at the age of 5. While sick in bed, his father showed him a compass. Einstein was so mesmerized by the force that acted upon the needle of the compass that the question of how it worked haunted him for years. This is largely attributed to his fascination of science that would drive him to publish hundreds of books, articles and more than 300 scientific papers. Einstein is most known for his theory of relativity (a.k.a E = mc2). It is commonly noted as ‘the world’s most famous equation’. Although the theory of relativity was his most known work, it would be another work on photoelectric effect that would win him the Noble Prize in Physics. Early in his career he would give explanations on particle theory, photon theory of light and, most pivotal of all, quantum theory.

68

During World War II, Einstein learned the Germans might succeed in creating an atomic bomb. He signed a letter warning President Roosevelt and urging the Americans to create the weapon first. Five months before his death, Einstein surmised his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb: "I made one great mistake in my life - when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification - the danger that the Germans would make them.”

FUN FACTS:

1) Einstein didn’t like to we ar socks. He hated that they always end up with holes in them. 2) Einstein failed his university entrance exam and had to reapply a yea r later. 3) Einstein loved to sail, but was not very good at it as he would always capsize his boat. He also didn’t know how to swim! January 2016

History of Fireworks People have been shooting off fireworks at celebrations for thousands and thousands of years! Learn more about the history of fireworks Fireworks were invented in China in the 7th century. IT’S GOOD TO BE DIFFERENT Imagine how dull the world would be without variety. Imagine if we all wore the same clothes, liked the same things and behaved the same way; how boring would that be? Thankfully, we are all born to be different and despite our children often wanting to be the same as their friends, we should encourage them to develop their own personality, as well as their own hopes and dreams. Too often, those children who are ‘different’ are singled out as being weird. But there’s nothing weird about wanting to play the violin instead of playing football. Similarly, there’s nothing strange about wanting to take photographs rather than visiting the cinema. The truth is, as parents, we should encourage our kids to follow a different path and do whatever makes them happy. If they show a desire to play a musical instrument, they should be applauded and offered the appropriate support. If they are keen to take up photography as a career, they should be encouraged and given every opportunity to practice and learn new techniques.

Unfortunately, due to the inevitable immature behaviour of their friends, they will more than likely be teased for their choices. This is why it’s so important to stand by them and make sure they don’t give up on their dreams. Remind them that it’s their so-called friends who are ‘strange’. Who wants to sit in a dark, cold cinema for two hours when you could be outside in the fresh air taking pictures of Kuwait’s nature or architecture? More often than not, it’s jealousy that leads to the teasing and they only make fun of someone’s choices because they don’t have the confidence to make choices of their own. January 2016

The sacrifices made by today’s great musicians, photographers and sportsmen and women are endless. Swimmers would train for hours before school started every morning, pianists would practice every evening and weekend for hours at a time, and photographers would sit for hours on end patiently waiting for that one perfect shot. It’s this dedication that made them great. Imagine what their school friends are thinking now. One mistake many parents make is choosing their kids’ career for them. Maybe they always wanted to be a doctor but never quite made the grades. Maybe they want to brag to their friends about their son, the lawyer; or maybe they’ve always dreamt of having a fashion designer daughter. The thing is, these are their dreams, and they’re not necessarily the same as their kids’. Living your dreams through your kids is not the answer. They must make their own choices as individuals and follow their own dreams. Steve Jobs hit the nail on the head with his wise words: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life”. But it’s not just sport or career choices that reflect

individuality. Fashion is another example of how kids can be singled out. But rather than thinking of this as a negative, look on the plus side. We’re all different when it comes to choosing clothes. As much as we would all love to squeeze into a pair of skinny jeans, not all of us have the body shape to pull it off. Similarly, the latest hair style may not look good with our particular shape of head or face. So why not be different? Take pleasure in the fact that you don’t look the same as everyone else. Encouraging your kids to dress in accordance with their personality can actually be quite fun. If you daughter has a sunny disposition, choose light, bright colours. If you son is larger than life, choose statement clothes to enhance his personality. It’s good to stand out from the crowd. Our personalities and tastes are reflected in many of our everyday choices, from what music we listen to, what food we eat and what books we read - even the cars we drive. Our kids need to know that their own choices will be respected. After all, it’s those choices that make them the wonderful individuals that they are.
