The North Pole Most of us think of the North Pole as Santa’s home. But as we get older, we can think of it geographically. What is really up there? The truth is, there isn’t much besides a whole lot of ice! The North Pole is the northernmost part of Earth. It is the point where Earth’s axis of rotation meets its surface.

Imagine a stick poking through the planet from the North Pole to the South Pole— that is the Earth’s axis! Due to the rotation of the planet, its “axial tilt” is at a 23.4 degree angle. This is how we get our four seasons. 13

Think About It! If the North Pole is the most northern part of the Earth, would you see a sunrise and a sunset every day like you do where you live? Would “night” and “day” be different than normal?

Unlike the South Pole, which is in Antarctica, there is no land at the North Pole. It is in the middle of the Arctic Ocean on a massive chunk of ice. Almost no living things can survive there for long. There are a few man-made stations in the Arctic for research, but other than that, no animal can call the North Pole its home. Why do you think this is?

Here are some of the only critters you could spot near the North Pole. Arctic fox ringed seal

Healthy Eyes: Facts for Kids Fact 1: Healthy foods help your eyes to be healthy too. Eating healthy foods can help our eyes work well. Fish, which has Omega 3, and milk, which is full of important vitamins, are great ‘eye foods’. All fruit and vegetables are good for your body. Some that are especially good for your eyes include: • broccoli • cauliflower • brussel sprouts • carrots • apples • pears • oranges.

Fact 2: Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses and a hat Because the sun’s rays are so strong, you should never ever look directly at it, even if there is an eclipse, as you can burn parts of your eye. Just as we put sunscreen on our skin for protection, we need to protect our eyes from the sun by wearing: • wrap-around sunglasses with lenses that meet the UV block-out, and • a hat with a wide brim.

Fact 3: Make sure your eyes aren’t tired by getting plenty of sleep • If you don’t get enough sleep you can experience blurry vision and poor concentration. • Adequate sleep each night will mean that your eyes work well at school and when you are playing.

Fact 4: Always use good lighting to see well

• Poor lighting may make your eyes feel tired. • Good lighting helps you see well when you are reading, writing, drawing and using the computer.

Fact 5: Keep your eyes clean Sometimes you need to clean your eyes. It is best to get an adult to help you with this. First shut your eyes and then gently wipe with a clean tissue, face washer or towel.

Fact 6: Protect your eyes when playing sport • Eyes can be hurt when you play sport. • Eyes can be protected by wearing a helmet. Make sure you wear a helmet when bike riding, skateboarding, rollerblading or riding your scooter, and when playing cricket or baseball. • Wear goggles when you swim and if you already have weak vision in one eye, wear safety goggles whenever you play sport to protect your ‘good eye’. • Speak to your eye doctor or optometrist for more information. • If you’re not careful you could hurt another person’s eyes, so never throw a ball or swing a bat, club or racquet directly near someone’s face.

Follow your Dreams by: Gill Sherry Abdul’s favourite room in the house was always the kitchen. He loved to watch his mom cooking dinner and always wanted to help when she was chopping vegetables, peeling potatoes or mixing flour and spices. While his little sister was playing with dolls or reading in her bedroom, Abdul would sit at the kitchen table learning about different spices and identifying different fruit and vegetables. At first, his mom was concerned. “You should be outside with your friends Abdul” she would say, “not in the kitchen all day”. But soon she realized just how much her son seemed to enjoy watching her cook. As he grew up, he became more and more enthusiastic and would tell her “One day mom, I’m going to be a famous chef!”

22

December 2015

So she began to teach him all about flavours and how to recognise smells. He learned which kind of rice worked best with chicken, when to serve pasta instead of potatoes, how much chili to put in each recipe and how long to cook lamb and beef so it not only looked and smelled delicious, but melted in your mouth too. His friends would often tease him. They called him “mommy’s boy” because he always went to the supermarket with his mom. But Abdul was undeterred. He knew if he was to become a successful chef, he needed to learn everything he could, not just about cooking, but about the ingredients too. By the time he went to college, Abdul was beginning to earn a reputation as a brilliant cook; not just amongst his family and friends, but his teachers too. He ignored anybody who made fun of him, determined that one day they would eat their words. He continued to work hard. He studied nutrition, he experimented with recipes and he spent every spare minute in the kitchen. He volunteered to cater for parties, often free of charge so he could gain experience and obtain important feedback about his food and its presentation. Every year he would make a birthday cake for his sister, staying up late into the night to perfect the icing and decorate it with her favourite things. He took jobs in local restaurants and worked evenings and weekends to improve his technique and gain experience. Abdul’s first full-time job was that of a pastry chef in a busy restaurant. Each day he would head to work with a smile on his face, before making cakes, pies, flans and fancy pastries for dozens of satisfied customers. But soon he realized he wanted to make more than just pastry. He missed the smell of spices and the heat and steam associated with his favourite flavoursome hot dishes. One day, after applying for what he

considered his ‘dream job’ he received a telephone call which was to change his life. He listened intently, he smiled widely and once he’d finished the call, he jumped up and down in excitement. Abdul had just secured a job as a Sous-Chef on a large cruise ship. This meant he would be the second-incommand in the busy kitchen aboard a huge passenger ship travelling all around the world! Six weeks later, his mom organized a good luck party for Abdul. His friends and family came along to wish him success and to bid him farewell before he embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. There was no denying he would be exceptionally busy but he was looking forward to the challenge and to his days off in far away exotic countries. “I’m going to miss you Abdul” said his sister. “Who will make my birthday cake when you’re gone?” Abdul laughed. “I’ll miss you too Princess” he said. “I can still make your birthday cake, you just need to come and join the ship so you can eat it!” This cheered her up immensely and she rushed away to tell her friends she was going to visit Abdul on his ship. Omar, Abdul’s friend, patted him on the back and wished him good luck. “I’m sorry I made fun of you Abdul” he said, “but I think you’ve had the last laugh. While I’m here sitting in an office every day, you will be sailing the world making people happy with your wonderful tasty creations”. “I always knew I wanted to be a chef ” he replied. “My mom told me to follow my dreams so that’s exactly what I did. We’ll always be friends though” he added. “Come and visit me sometime. One day I will be the Head Chef and I’ll show you around my huge floating kitchen!” Something told Omar that’s exactly what his friend would do. www.kidzine.net

CLUB Breakthrough!: How Three People Saved "Blue Babies" and Changed Medicine Forever by Jim Murphy

In 1944 a groundbreaking operation repaired the congenital heart defect known as blue baby syndrome. The operation's success brought the surgeon Alfred Blalock international fame and paved the way for open-heart surgery. But the technique had been painstakingly developed by Vivien Thomas, Blalock's African American lab assistant, who stood behind Blalock in the operating room to give him step-bystep instructions. The stories of this medical and social breakthrough and the lives of Thomas, Blalock, and their colleague Dr. Helen Taussig are intertwined in this compelling nonfiction narrative.

BLOOD TEST COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT

Baghdad Street – Building 38 same as Boushahri Seema Pharmacy, Opposite Suleiman Al-Luhaib Mosque - Tel : 1888877

The complete blood count (CBC) is a common blood test that evaluates the three major types of cells in the blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

www.boushahricp.com

32

Boushahri_clinic

Why It's Done A CBC may be ordered as part of a routine checkup, or if your child is feeling more tired than usual, seems to have an infection, or has unexplained bruising or bleeding.

Red blood cells: The CBC's

measurements of red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein in RBCs), and mean (red) cell volume (MCV) provides information about the RBCs, which carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. These measurements are usually done to test for anemia, a common condition that occurs when the body has insufficient red blood cells.

Platelets: The smallest blood cells,

platelets play an important role in blood clotting and the prevention of bleeding. When a blood vessel is damaged or cut, platelets clump together and plug the hole until the blood clots. If the platelet count is too low, a person can be in danger of bleeding in any part of the body.

White blood cells: The white

blood cell (WBC) count measures the number of WBCs (also called leukocytes) in the blood. The WBC differential test measures the relative numbers of the different kinds of WBCs in the blood. WBCs, which help the body fight infection, are bigger than red blood cells and there are far fewer of them in the bloodstream. An abnormal WBC count may indicate an infection, inflammation, or other stress in the body. For example, a bacterial infection can cause the WBC count to increase, or decrease, dramatically.

December 2015

The CBC can also test for loss of blood, abnormalities in the production or destruction of blood cells, acute and chronic infections, allergies, and problems with blood clotting.

Preparation No special preparations are needed. Wearing a T-shirt or short-sleeved shirt on the day of the test can make things easier for the technician who will be drawing blood.

The Procedure

33

Not much blood is drawn in a CBC. A health professional will usually draw the blood from a vein. For an infant, the blood may be obtained by puncturing the heel with a small needle (lancet). If the blood is being drawn from a vein, the skin surface is cleaned with antiseptic, and an elastic band (tourniquet) is placed around the upper arm to apply pressure and cause the veins to swell with blood. A needle is inserted into a vein (usually in the arm inside of the elbow or on the back of the hand) and blood is withdrawn and collected in a vial or syringe. After the procedure, the elastic band is removed. Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed and the area is covered with cotton or a bandage to stop the bleeding. Collecting blood for this test will only take a few minutes.

Boushahri_clinic

What to Expect Either method (heel sticking or vein withdrawal) of collecting a sample of blood is only temporarily uncomfortable and can feel like a quick pinprick. Afterward, there may be some mild bruising, which should go away in a few days.

Getting the Results 34

The blood sample is processed by a machine. Parts of the CBC results can be available in minutes in an emergency, but more commonly the full test results come after a few hours or the next day. If a CBC test points to anemia, infection, or other concerns, your child's doctor may repeat the test just to be sure. If the second set of test results come back the same, your doctor will likely order further lab tests for your child to determine what's causing the problem and how to treat it.

Risks The CBC test is considered a safe procedure. However, as with many medical tests, there are some problems that can occur with having blood drawn, such as: • fainting or feeling lightheaded • hematoma (blood accumulating under the skin causing a lump or a bruise) • pain associated with multiple punctures to locate a vein December 2015

Helping Your Child Having a blood test is relatively painless. Still, many kids are afraid of needles. Explaining the test in terms your child can understand might help ease some of the fear. Allow your child to ask the technician any questions he or she might have. Tell your child to try to relax and stay still during the procedure, as tensing muscles and moving can make it harder and more painful to draw blood. It also may help if your child looks away when the needle is being inserted into the skin. www.kidzine.net

(Although there’s nothing wrong with having them for breakfast you know) Either way an Italian eats on the run with a ‘cappuccino e cornetto’ aka a cappuccino and croissant.

1. This first step is necessary only if you are using a piece of paper that measures 8.5” x 11” (also known as “printer paper”). Take the upper right corner of the paper and fold it down diagonally so it lines the left side of the paper. While folded, cut off the excess paper to create a perfect square.

2. Next, take the square and fold it again in half diagonally, top-right corner to bottom-left corner. Then take the top-left corner of that triangle and fold it down to the bottom-right corner of the triangle to make a smaller triangle.

46 3. Take the left point of the triangle and fold it 1/3 of the way over to the right. Then take the right point of the triangle and fold it over the remaining third of the way. Each side should line up evenly.

4. Lastly, cut off the remaining corners by cutting a straight horizontal line, leaving a triangle. Then fold the triangle in half by folding the right corner over to the left corner.

Now you’re ready to design your own snowflake! December 2015

When water heats up, it turns into a vapor and rises in the sky, forming clouds. The water that forms these clouds can create tiny bits of ice. The heavier the ice is, the more likely it is to fall back to the ground. The ice melts into raindrops if it falls through warm air, but if the weather is cold enough, a snowstorm is born. Ice crystals form on small particles of dust and the crystals melt together to weather science form snowflakes. There are six different types of snowflakes, all of which have six sides. These different shapes form depending on how much water there is in them, as well as how cold it is. That's why when it's really chilly during a snowstorm, the flakes are tiny, but when the weather is a little warmer, the flakes are much larger. Now that you've learned all about snow, answer the question below.

Why does it snow more during winter?

Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci was born in Italy on April 15, 1452.

52

‘Da Vinci’ means ‘of Vinci’ and refers to the Tuscan town where he was born. He wrote in the opposite direction to what is considered normal so you would need a mirror to read it properly! He lived during the Italian Renaissance and is best known as a painter. His legendary works include the Mona Lisa, The Vitruvian Man and the Last Supper. The Mona Lisa is probably the most well known painting in the world. It is a portrait of a woman who has been the subject of much speculation and discussion. It is thought he began painting the Mona Lisa in 1503. It has been on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris for over 200 years. Only around 15 of his paintings are still around today. His Vitruvian Man is on the Italian Euro coin. He is considered by many to be one of the most talented and intelligent people of all time. He was a scientist, mathematician, engineer, writer, musician and inventor as well as an artist. Some people also claim he invented the bicycle! The term ‘Renaissance Man’ refers to someone who does many things very well and is today used to describe people who resemble Leonardo da Vinci. He was particularly interested in flight and studied the flight of birds as well as creating plans for flying machines resembling hang gliders and helicopters. He also drew plans for musical instruments, war machines, calculators and boats although the plans were limited due to the limited level of technology available at the time. He became an expert in the anatomy of the human body, studying it in detail and creating hundreds of drawings to help explain his thoughts. He was a very logical man and used a process like the scientific method when investigating a subject. In 1994, Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft) purchased Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous scientific writings, the ‘Codex Leicester’ containing, amongst other things, December 2015

explanations of water movement, fossils and the moon. Examples of da Vinci’s famous quotes include: “He who thinks little, errs much” “Movement will cease before we are weary of being useful” “What is fair in men, passes away, but not so in art” “Drawing is based on perspective, which is nothing else than a thorough knowledge of the function of the eye” Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519. It is believed he is buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert in Amboise, France.

Hey guys it is I, Max, returning one more time. Today I am going to be talking about Sonic the Hedgehog, another big video game franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game franchise created and owned by Sega. The franchise centers on a series of speed-based platform games, but several are spin-offs in different genres. The protagonist of the series is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog named Sonic, whose peaceful life is often interrupted by the series’ main antagonist, Doctor Eggman. Typically, Sonic—usually along with some of his friends, such as Tails, Amy, and Knuckles—must stop Eggman and foil any plans of world domination. The first game in the series, published in 1991, was conceived by Sega's Sonic Team division after Sega requested a mascot character; the title was a success and sequels followed, transforming Sega into a leading video game company in the early to mid-1990s.

62

The Sonic Team has since developed many titles in the franchise. Prominent members of its initial staff included Naka, character designer Naoto Ohshima and level designer Hirokazu Yasuhara. Other developers of Sonic games have included Japanese Dimps, American Sega Technical Institute, Backbone Entertainment, Big Red Button Entertainment, Sanzaru Games, Canadian BioWare, British Sumo Digital and Traveller's Tales. While the first games in the series were side-scrolling platform games, the series has expanded into other genres such as action-adventure, fighting, racing, role-playing and sports. Including packaged game software and downloads, the franchise has sold over 335 million units, with the mobile game Sonic Dash being downloaded over 100 million times, making it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The first Sonic game, titled Sonic the Hedgehog, was a platform game released in 1991 that featured protagonist Sonic running through the game's levels in order to stop Doctor Robotic from taking over the world. The game focused on Sonic's ability to run and jump at high speeds with the use of springs, checkpoints and loops. Its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a platform game released in 1992, increased the overall size and speed of the series' gameplay and was the second bestselling Genesis game of all time. The game introduced Sonic's sidekick, Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, who followed Sonic throughout the game and allowed a second player to control him in a limited fashion.; and the ‘spin dash’ maneuver, which allowed Sonic to boost forwards quickly when stopped. October 2015 December 2015

GAMING CLUB The next sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, was a third platform game in the Sonic series released in 1994. The game introduced a temporary shield maneuver, added new shield types to the series and allowed Tails to fly under a player's control. It also introduced a new character, Knuckles the Echidna, who served as an additional antagonist with Doctor Robotic for the game. That’s it for this month. Have fun!

Galileo

“The Father of Modern Science”

Galileo Galilei was a man caught in a cross roads of history between the power of the Catholic Church and the power of the truth of science. He would study and master astronomy, physics, engineering, philosophy and, of course, mathematics. From an early age he was able to see mathematical properties of rhythm in music as he learned to play the lute. Later he would observe a swinging chandelier and deduce that it took the same time to swing back and forth no matter how far it was swinging. This discovery would 100 years later be utilized to form an accurate timepiece. Galileo was a smart man who could easily have been a priest, a musician, or doctor. Instead Galileo had his eyes looking upward to the skies. Astronomy would become his passion. Galileo was appointed to the chair of mathematics in Pisa in 1589, and there he would make his most significant discoveries in astronomy, physics, and improvements to the telescope. In 1609 he would build his first telescope and began his observations of planets. He discovered the moons of Jupiter, phases of Venus, mountains on the moon, and sunspots.

68

Many people during this time believed the earth was the center of the universe. Galileo knew this was false. This would be the foundation of which his life would hit the cross roads between religion and science, from 1615 until he was charged with heresy on June 22, 1633. Popular legend states that after he recanted his theory that the earth moved around the sun, Galileo allegedly muttered the phrase ‘E pur si muove ‘ (and yet it moves). Galileo the rebel mathematician indeed!

The grand colonial architecture of New Delhi is credited to Edwin Luyten who was called by King George V to design and build the British Empire’s administrative buildings. The most grandiose among Luyten’s creations is the Viceroy’s building which is now the presidential palace known as Rashtrapati Bhavan.

5000 workers were employed for the construction of Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque. The construction commenced in 1650 and took six years to complete. The mosque was built on the orders of Emperor Shahjahan to complement his palace at the Red Fort.

7 Tips for Helping Shy Students Speak More in Class We want everyone in our class to participate and learn, but we don’t want to make students uncomfortable by forcing them to speak in class. If you are careful about how and when you call on your shy students and you create a classroom environment where they know perfection is not expected, you will see your shy students start to participate more. And once they start, all you have to do is encourage them and give positive feedback. Before long, they will be participating just as much as anyone in class. Here are some tips to help you invite your shy students to speak up more.

1. Grouping Together

2. Accepting Failure

One way you can help shyer students feel more comfortable talking is to put them all in the same group. Sometimes students refrain from speaking because there is always another ready to take the conversation floor. When you put all of your shy students into the same group, someone will have to speak up. Since all your quieter students will be all together, everyone might feel more comfortable opening up to speak. There will be no big talkers in the group to take over or steer the conversation.

Give your students permission to fail. Sometimes it’s enough just to hear the words out loud. You are going to make mistakes. There is no doubt about it. Speak anyway. When you prepare your students for potential failures, you allay some of their fear. Sometimes even saying the wrong thing out loud is enough to break the ice for your shy students and get them vocalizing in class. Help your students understand that you do not expect perfection from them. Rather, you want them to communicate however that can happen. They can be creative with the December 2015

language they know rather than worrying about getting syntax perfect every time. If they can communicate their ideas, no matter how flawed the English used to do so, they have been successful speakers of English.

3. Away from Podium Take the spotlight off shy students. If the whole class is going to be looking at them while they speak, it might freeze their voice right then and there. By putting your class into pairs, you take thirty sets of eyes off your shy student and leave them with only one set of eyes on them. This will take away the intimidation that comes from speaking to the entire class. What about those students who can’t even handle one set of eyes on them while they speak? Try activities in which students sit back to back while they work with their partner, activities such as a simulated phone call or one in which partners give each other drawing directions. When no eyes at all are on them, shy students will surprise you by stepping up to the plate and hitting that homerun.

4. Stepping up Gradually When it comes to comprehension questions, you can set your students up for success by starting slow and easy. Rather than just reading the questions in the book, try coming up with a few questions to start your comprehension activity that are embarrassingly easy to answer. I find it helpful to start with observation questions – what does the passage say? This works for videos, too. What happened? What did you see? Then move on to more complicated questions that ask students to interpret what they read, saw, or herd, questions that get to the meaning behind the words. Finally, ask students to apply the information to their own lives, to make connections with experiences they have had or with their own ideas and opinions. When you start slow and work your students up to the tougher questions, your shy students are more likely to speak up when they know they can’t be wrong.

for their shy nature. If they know the answer, even better. Still move on and don’t make a big deal of them talking or being unable to do so.

6. Avoiding Overcorrection Don’t correct every mistake. Nothing is more daunting than the feeling that everything you say or write is wrong. Discouragement sets in quickly, and it’s difficult to bring students back to a place whether they are willing to take a chance by speaking up. If your students make errors, let them go. Sometimes. Make sure you are only correcting skills you have taught in class or mistakes that students make repeatedly. You can’t expect a beginning student to talk like a native speaker, and make sure they don’t expect it of themselves either. Being selective in the mistakes you correct can make all the difference in a student’s confidence and their willingness to speak up in class.

7. Accepting Nonverbal Answers Don’t make every response language based. If you want to encourage students who are afraid to speak in English, bypass language. Sometimes. Have students respond in a picture or acting something out. Sometimes if you take language out of the equation, it’s enough to bring your shy student out of her shell. Once she’s out the language based participation is easier to do, and your shy student may not be so shy for long.

5. Moving On You may hesitate to call on shyer students when brainstorming or asking questions in class. After all, there are so many other students who are eager to give answers. But it’s important to call on all of your students, even the shy ones. When you do, however, move on quickly. If they don’t know the answer, that’s okay. The shorter they are the center of attention, the better it is www.kidzine.net
