3.That’s it! Now carefully place the boat onto the surface of the water and watch it scoot across the water for several seconds – you’ve made a soappowered boat! To demonstrate the boat again, you will need to rinse out the tray to remove any soap from the previous demonstration.

How does is work? Soap is a surfactant – that means that it breaks down the surface tension of water. As the surface tension is broken up, it creates enough of a force to push the lightweight boat across the surface.

A toothpick

2.Dip the toothpick into the liquid soap and use the toothpick to put soap onto the sides of the notch at the back of the boat.

One Direction number one breaks streaming records One Direction have topped the UK singles chart with their new single Drag Me Down.

20

The track broke streaming records, earning the highest first-week streams for a single in the UK with more than 2.03 million plays. Drag Me Down is One Direction's first single as a foursome since band mate Zayn Malik left and has had more than 17.7 million streams to date globally. The band shot the video for 'Drag Me Down' at NASA's headquarters in Houston.

Does China's Winter Olympics song sound like Frozen?

Tom Holland is Marvel's New Spider-Man Our spidey-senses are tingling - it's just been officially announced that Tom Holland is the new Spider-Man! It was confirmed recently that the 19-year-old British actor would be the next Peter Parker! Directed by John Watts, the new Spider-Man film is set to hit theaters on July 28th, 2017.

The official song for the Beijing Winter Olympics has come under criticism online for sounding rather like a hit song from Disney's musical, Frozen.

It was announced on 31st July that Beijing would host the 2022 Winter Olympics despite the city's lack of snow. No-one was available for comment at either the Beijing Games' organising committee or Disney. But just how similar are the two songs? Judge for yourself: have a listen to China's Olympic song 'The Snow and Ice Dance', and Frozen's 'Let It Go'. August 2015

Unusual Fruits That Are Good for Your Eyes Foods that are high in antioxidants and vitamins play a key role in the health of your eyes. Can you identify these unusual fruits?

1

With pink skin and bright green shoots, this fruit is the most colorful member of the cactus family. It contains plenty of vitamin C, which helps nourish and protect the cornea of the eye.

2

Most people are surprised by this fruit's cucumber-like center. Its green pulp contains beta carotene, or provitamin A, which helps protect the surface of the eye and is essential for good night vision.

25

3

The finger-like appendages of this fruit make it one of the oddestlooking members of the citrus family. But it is high in vitamin C, which helps protect the delicate capillaries of the retina. It is considered a good luck charm in some cultures.

4

Much like an orange, this fruit's juicy center can be pulled apart into wedge-shaped segments. Its long list of nutrients includes B complex vitamins, which appear to reduce the risk of macular degeneration among women, according to a recent study.

5

Covered by a thorny skin, this fruit is also rich in vitamin C. Several studies suggest that a diet rich in vitamin C may reduce the risk of cataracts and vision loss from macular degeneration.

6

Sometimes confused with an artichoke because of its bumpy, green skin, this fruit has a sweet, custard-like center. In addition to vitamins C and B, it contains potassium. Research shows potassium-rich foods help reduce excess fluid under the skin that causes puffy eyes. www.kidzine.net

7

This fruit's name is derived from the Mayan word for "hairy." It is rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids, which are plant pigments with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These two nutrients complement each other and may help reduce the risk of age-related vision problems by protecting the eyes from damage caused by free radicals.

George

Goodbye

by Alex Gino

by Rebecca Stead

When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl.

Bridge is an accident survivor who's wondering why she's still alive. Emily has new curves and an almost-boyfriend who wants a certain kind of picture. Tabitha sees through everybody's games--or so she tells the world. The three girls are best friends with one rule: No fighting. Can it get them through seventh grade?

George thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part . . . because she's a boy.

Keepers of the Labyrinth by Erin E. Moulton Lilith Bennette runs at midnight. She scales walls in the dark and climbs without a harness. She hopes that if she follows exactly in the steps of her strong air force pilot mother, she’ll somehow figure out the mystery of her mother’s death—and the reason why her necklace of Greek symbols has been missing ever since.

A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen With the rise of the Berlin Wall, twelve-year-old Gerta finds her family divided overnight. She, her mother, and her brother Fritz live on the eastern side, controlled by the Soviets. Her father and middle brother, who had gone west in search of work, cannot return home.

In the past, people wore the same exact shoes for both left and right feet.

The world’s most popular fruit is… the tomato! Yes, the tomato is a fruit just like the pepper and the pumpkin. After all, it is a part of a flowering plant. It is not just any fruit, though, but the most popular since 60 million tons of it are produced per year.

Before the nineteenth century, men and women wore identical shoes; identical not just in the sense that the same shoes were made for men and women but in that the shoe used for the right foot is identical to the one used for the left foot. It was only in 1818 that shoes specifically for right and left feet were designed.

The Aztecs invented popcorn.

Apples, among others are related to roses.

The Aztecs popped corn and used the burst flowers as ornaments for their headdresses and offerings to Tlaloc, the god of maize.

Apple trees, strawberry plants, cherry trees and plum trees all belong to the genus Prunus which in turn belongs to the rose family. The same family includes the roses we see in flower shops, of course.

Ancient Olympians ate lizard meat. During the ancient Olympic games, some athletes would eat lizard meat prepared in a certain way, which they believed would enhance their performance.

Spiders smell with their legs.

We all know spiders have eight legs but did you know these legs are more than just for walking? Each of a spider’s legs is covered in hundreds of tiny hairs which gather the particles in the air. They can also sense vibrations from the spider’s surroundings. www.kidzine.net

How HOT’is it in Kuwait? by: JIM WEST

Summer is here and with summer time off school comes the soaring temperatures. With the average temperatures between 42 to 48 degrees, it can truly become a struggle to be outdoors for a prolonged period of time. The highest recorded temperature in Kuwait was at 53.8 degrees Celsius back on July 31, 2012. Although Kuwait can feel like the hottest place on earth during the summer, there are some places which will make you feel blessed to be here. Timbuktu, Mali has a rich history that is slowly being taken over by the encroaching Sahara desert. Temperatures regularly reach in excess of 54 degrees Celsius. Rub’al Khali desert covers about a third of the Arabian Peninsula that includes Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates. With a high temperature recorded at 56 degrees Celsius, needless to say it gets hot there. Flaming Mountains, China are named for their red sandstone bedrock that resembles a flame. Yet the name is also appropriate for another reason. In 2008, a NASA satellite recorded one of the highest temperatures ever measured at 66.77 degrees Celsius! Badlands, Australia hit a record 69.27 degree Celsius in 2003. Badlands indeed. Lut Desert, Iran hit the highest reading ever officially confirmed on earth at 70.72 degrees Celsius. You can cook an egg at that temperature! www.kidzine.net

COOKIES AND CREAM 3.6% Snow flavored with honey and fruit was an early version of ice cream eaten by the ancient Greeks. In Canada, more ice cream is sold in winter than in summer. 30

"Brain freeze" is triggered when ice cream touches the roof of your mouth, causing blood vessels in the head to dilate.

At some instances when you consume ice cream, you must have experienced a severe headache for about 40 seconds. This headache, or brain freeze, is the result of the cold ice cream touching the roof of your mouth. This area has a nerve center; when something very cold touches this area, the blood vessels in the brain get dilated, causing an instant headache.

FRENCH VANILLA 3.8% CHOCOLATE 8.9% strawberry 5.3% Sugar in ice cream lowers its melting point, and the fats are responsible for its creamy texture.

butter pecan 5.3% It takes an average of 50 licks to finish one scoop of ice cream.

The ice cream cone was invented at the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis. Seven different accounts were taken about the creation of the waffle ice cream cone from the World Fair. Some claim Ernest Hamwi, a Syrian concessions vendor, curled a waffle cookie and transformed it into a receptacle for ice cream.

The major ingredient in an ice cream? Air. Air is added to ice cream to make it lighter and improve its texture. The amount of air added determines the quality of an ice cream. The more the air, the cheaper the ice cream in terms of money and quality (in some cases).

The average person in the United States eats more ice cream a year - 38.7pints - than anywhere else in the world.

VANILLA 29.9%

You can buy Fungus-flavored ice-cream in San Francisco, California. Some weird flavors of ice cream include buckwheat ice cream, and Parmesan gelato.

PRALINE PECAN 1.7% To produce 1 gallon of ice cream, it takes 12 pounds of milk.

The last thing Elvis Presley ate was four scoops of icecream and six chocolate chip cookies.

A cow gives 64 pounds of milk in a day. That means, by extremely complicated mathematical calculations, it gives approximately 5.5 gallons of ice cream every day.

CHOCOLATE CHIP 3.9% Did you know that there is a variety called fried ice cream? Yes, a scoop of ice cream is flash fried to give it a crunchy coating. The core remains cold.

Vanilla is the most popular flavor.

“Raw Horse Flesh is an ice cream flavor that is sold in Japan.

July is National Ice Cream Month in America.

Summers on Uranus are 21 Earth years long.

36

Sunflowers use maths to maximise sunlight. Key summer months have Roman origins. June is named after Juno, who was the wife of Jupiter. Marc Antony named July after Julius Caesar and August was named after Caesar’s nephew, known as Augustus. To cool down in India and Pakistan, people drink a version of lemondae mixed with salt and pepper.

Your nails grow faster during summer.

The first day of summer is known as the summer Solstice and in the US it falls on June 20 or June 21 each year, depending on when the sun is furthest north of the equator. In July, people in Nanaimo, Canada, race boats made out of old bathtubs.

School summer vacations were invented by educator Horace Mann in 1840. August 2015

There are more babies born in the summer in America than any other season. One of the more annoying parts of summer are the mosquitoes, which have been around for 30 million years. It's said they can find warmblooded mammals from 100 feet away.

AIRAG, OR FERMENTED HORSE MILK, IS A POPULAR SUMMERTIME DRINK IN MONGOLIA.

A study shows that CATS EAT about 15 PERCENT LESS FOOD in SUMMER than in winter.

Popsicle was invented by accident by an 11-yearold boy named Frank Epperson in 1905. He accidentally left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch, and awoke the next morning to find a frozen pop! Cherry flavor popsicle is the number one favorite flavor.

Summer winds over Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, create a cloud cover known as the "tablecloth."

Watermelon is the summer's favorite vegetable. Yes, vegetable and not a fruit. It is part of the cucumber, pumpkin, and squash family. Fruit or veggie, this juicy favorite is 92 percent water.

According to custom, in the United States, a person can wear white pants only during the summer, or between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Girls in Sweden traditionally put flowers under their pillows to celebrate the summer solstice. Heat rash. When it’s hot and humid, sweat glands can become blocked by excess perspiration, trapping sweat beneath the skin and causing a red, bumpy, prickly rash — heat rash

August is the busiest month for travel and tourism.

London, England -- the most popular destination of 2014 -- had over five million visitors last summer.

Australians often barbecue on Christmas, which occurs during their summer.

The higher the temperature, the faster crickets tend to chirp. www.kidzine.net

Full Sturgeon Moon

Mark your calendars: The biggest full moon of the summer, known as the Full Sturgeon Moon, will be out on August 29.

THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE IN JULY IN AHVAZ, IRAN, IS 1150F. The Eiffel Tower can "grow" over six inches taller in summer because heat makes its iron expand.

Sunscreens We all need some sun exposure — it's the top source of vitamin D, which helps our bodies absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones. But it doesn't take much time in the sun for most people to get the vitamin D they need. And repeated unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression and skin cancer. Even people in their twenties can develop skin cancer. Sunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.

Sunscreen sprays are convenient but should be used with caution. For starters, sprays are easy to breathe in, which can irritate the lungs. Some sprays are also flammable, so you need to avoid sparks or flames when applying them and wearing them. Sarah wasn’t sure if she still believed in the tooth fairy. Her brother, Nasir, had been trying to convince her it was their parents who exchanged her precious baby teeth for money and not the make-believe tooth fairy. But Sarah liked the story of the beautiful fairy who collected baby teeth to build

a magical fairy castle and didn’t want to believe her brother’s tales. He was always making up stories. She hoped he was making this one up too. The story of the tooth fairy was a magical one and she was sad to think it wasn’t actually true. August 2015

She was due to lose another tooth very soon. It was getting more and more loose every day and she could wiggle around it with her tongue. A few days later, the loose tooth finally came out. Sarah was determined to discover the truth about the tooth fairy so when she placed the tooth under her pillow that night, she also placed her toy box behind her bedroom door. That way, if it was her parents who took the tooth, the box will have moved in the morning. Satisfied with her cunning plan, Sarah said her prayers and settled down to sleep. She was tired from the excitement of losing her tooth and soon fell into a dreamful sleep. She dreamt she could see the tooth fairy hovering above her bed. It was the most beautiful fairy she’d ever seen with delicate pink wings, strawberry coloured hair and big blue eyes. She watched as the fairy waved her star shaped wand, leaving a trail of golden fairy dust across her bed, before flapping her wings and disappearing in a cloud of glistening stars.

The next morning, Sarah woke as the first signs of sun shone through her bedroom window. She yawned and stretched her arms above her head before remembering her dream about the tooth fairy. She quickly checked under her pillow to discover her tooth had been replaced with a nice shiny coin. She would put it in her money box with the others. Casting her eyes to her bedroom door she noticed her toy box was in exactly the same place as it was the night before. There’s no way her parents could have come into her room! She thought once again of her dream and the beautiful fairy she’d seen hovering above her bed. Then she noticed the trail of golden dust across her bed and realized it hadn’t been a dream at all. The tooth fairy was real! She couldn’t wait to tell Nasir. www.kidzine.net

Super Mario’s character is an Italian Plumber and is one of the biggest franchises in the world. The creators of the franchise are a company called Nintendo who started in 1981 and are still going strong today.

There was a sequel called Donkey Kong Jr. where it’s reversed. You are Diddy Kong and you have to focus on climbing not jumping. These two arcade games became a big hit earning Nintendo over 180 Million Dollars and establishing them as the company we know today.

56

Now we hit Super Mario Bros featuring his brother Luigi with co-op mode. The game objective is to collect coins and destroy enemies. It’s an endless high score platformer on the NES (Nintendo Entertaining System). August 2015

It started off as an arcade game named Donkey Kong - a platformer game were you have to avoid barrels by jumping over them. It may sound easy but no no no no, it’s very complicated!

GAMING CLUB ’s me Max Hey guys, it lub. e gaming c th to g in rn retu ing the be introduc l il w I y a ry d To in the histo e is h c n a fr t ario’. bigges ed ‘Super M ll a c g in m a of g

But it gets better! You have to go through a certain amount of platforms in each stage and now the objective is to find Princess Peach. You have to check all 6 worlds in the Mushroom Kingdom. But in 5 worlds a mushroom servant says “sorry the princess is not here, maybe next time” and walks off to the other castle. There are 2 more sequels exactly the same but with more variety of power ups and characters.

We will be continuing super Mario in the next issue. Until next time enjoy learning and playing old and new video consoles and games.

Bye guys, have a nice day. www.kidzine.net

Dolphins

Dolphins are sometimes known as ‘dogs of the sea’ because they are playful and friendly. They can be seen jumping out of the water, riding waves, play fighting and even interacting with humans swimming in the water. Josephine Garis MEET THE WOMAN WHO INVENTED THE AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER

Josephine Garis was born on 8th March 1839 in Ohio, USA. Her mother died when Josephine was young so she was raised in Indiana by her father who was an engineer. He had previously invented a hydraulic pump for draining marshes – maybe that’s where her mechanical inspired idea came from! She attended a private high school but unfortunately it burned down so her father sent her to live with her sister in Shelbyville, Illinois. She continued her education there where she completed high school and graduated. In 1858, at the age of 19, Josephine married 27 year old William A. Cochran and they lived a comfortable life in Shelbyville. Their only child, a son named Hallie, died at the age of two. 62

In 1870, they moved into a very grand house where they entertained in style and became known as successful socialites. William Cochran was a rising political star who had little interest in anything other than his Democratic Party. He had a violent temper and became ill. He decided to go away for a rest but he didn’t get well and died two weeks later. When her husband died in 1883, Josephine changed the spelling of her last name. Adding an ‘e’ to the end, she became Josephine Cochrane.

William had left her with a lot of debt. Coupled with the fact she was fed up with her servants chipping her best china when washing it (and she didn’t want to wash it herself!) the idea for a dishwasher was formed. Shortly after that, when she was 44 years old, she invented the automatic dishwasher. An attempt had been made by a man previously, but his attempt was unsuccessful. Her design was based on putting dishes into wire compartments then placing the compartments into a wheel cage which was lowered into a copper tub. A motor (powered by hand) pumped jets of soapy water and then hot clean water over the dishes. The dishes would be left to dry from their own heat and then be ready to put away. August 2015

The design used water pressure to clean – just as today’s dishwashers do! Working with a mechanic named George Butters, the Garis-Cochran DishWashing Machine was patented in 1886. She named it after her father and her husband. Guided by her independent nature and personal confidence, Josephine displayed and demonstrated the machine herself at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, where it was a hit and won top prize. She sold nine of them on the spot to people who were running kitchens at the Exposition! She opened her own factory in 1897 and personally sold her machines, renaming the company ‘Cochran’s Crescent Washing Machine Company’.

Sales were mainly to restaurants and hotels, but not to homes as most people were unable to afford one. Also, most households didn't have large enough hot water tanks to supply a dishwasher and in those days, women enjoyed socializing with each other in the kitchen and would enjoy washing the dishes after a meal. In 1912, at 73 years old, Josephine was still personally selling her machines. She died of a stroke in 1913 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Shelbyville, Illinois.

In 1916, her company was bought out by Hobart which later became KitchenAid and is now Whirlpool Corporation. Josephine Cochrane is considered the founder.

Filling Your Frame

I have seen many photos taken by new photographers where I have to narrow my eyes to make out their subjects because they are so distant. While empty spaces can be used effectively in photos to create stunning results, you’re much more likely to get a ‘wow’ from those looking at your photos if your shots are filled with interest.

People

This technique is particularly important when taking pictures of people whose facial features tend to disappear when you move more than a few meters away from them. While it can be appropriate to take shots that put a person in context with the environment that they are in, if they get lost in the picture you might as well just take a shot of the scene and leave them out of it.

Having said that filling your frame is important when photographing people, it’s also a very effective technique when photographing ‘things’ or scenes.

2. Use your legs – most photographers have a built in zoom in the form of their legs. Don’t just rely upon your cameras zoom but actually position yourself effectively for close in shots.

3. Crop your shots – the other option is to zoom in manually at home after you’ve taken your shots. This is a handy option to have but I prefer to use one of the first two options whenever I can. Cropping shots later means if you want a large image, you’ll find that it becomes more pixelated. This is a good option if you’re just trimming shots but any major cropping will result in a loss of quality of your image.

Enjoy taking photos with this technique and remember to move closer and take real close shots of objects and people.

TRAVEL S

Cairo is the capital city of Egypt.

DIARIE

In the Arabic language, Cairo is known as ‘Al-Qahirah’ which means ‘The Victorious’ or ‘The Triumphant’.

The distance from Kuwait City to Cairo is 1620 kilometers or 1007 miles. It takes approximate 2 hours and 50 minutes to fly from one city to the other.

Greater Cairo is the largest city in Africa and the Middle East. Cairo International Airport is the busiest airport in Egypt and the second busiest airport in Africa (after Johannesburg).

92

If you are travelling to Cairo you will need to exchange your currency for Egyptian pounds (EGP).

The Egyptian flag is a horizontally divided flag of red, white and black with the Eagle of Saladin (the national emblem of Egypt) centered in the white band.

Egyptian Arabic is the main language spoken in Cairo but English is also widely spoken, particularly in the tourist areas. August 2015

Cairo is situated along the Nile River and there are two large islands in the middle of the city!

Cairo is exceptionally busy and the streets are often crowded. There are believed to be over 4.5 million cars in Cairo!

It is often referred to as "the city of a thousand minarets.

The climate in Cairo is a hot, desert climate with high humidity and frequent stand storms. 93 Cairo is a popular destination for tourists wishing to visit the world famous pyramids. The Pyramids of Giza are the closest pyramids to Cairo, situated high on the desert plateau. People also flock to see the iconic Sphinx at the foot of the plateau.

It took around 20 years to build the Great Pyramid of Cairo. It was built with 2 million limestone blocks and is the largest and oldest of all the pyramids in Egypt.

Tahrir Square sits in the heart of Cairo. This is where you’ll find the vast Egyptian Museum, home to a trove of antiquities including the royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamen artefacts.

94

‘Islamic Cairo’ is described as the biggest Islamic open museum in the world. The 9th Century Mosque of Ibn Tulun can be found here. An inscription over a mile long encircles the building! The Gayer Anderson museum can also be found here – some scenes from the James Bond movie ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ were filmed at the museum.

Don’t forget to visit Khan el-Khalili – the world’s oldest and greatest market! The bazaar was established in 1382 and has now grown to massive proportions.

August 2015

Cairo is home to one of the oldest universities in the world. Al-Azhar University was founded in 975 CE.

Football fans in Cairo tend to support either Al-Ahly or Zamalek football club. They are fierce rivals but they share the same ‘Cairo International’ stadium!

Quiz Be sure to try some Kushari, a traditional Egyptian dish often sold by street vendors. It’s a mixture of lentils, macaroni noodles and rice topped with a spicy tomato sauce made from spices, garbanzo beans and friend onions. Yummy!

PASSIVE SMOKING – THE DANGERS We all know that smoking is bad for us but for some reason, this doesn’t stop millions of us lighting up every day. It’s one thing putting our own health at risk but what about the health of others? More and more people are suffering health problems as a result of breathing in other people’s smoke. This second-hand smoke poses a serious health risk to anyone who inhales it but especially to children and expectant mothers.

pollutes the air in our homes and cars where it tends to hang in the air rather than disperse. This results in a permanent invisible cloud that everyone, smoker or not, is forced to breathe. At the very least, this could irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs.

The dangers of this so-called passive smoking should not be underestimated. It is acknowledged that it causes significant short and long-term harm to others. It

- Increased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS or cot death).

Children are particularly susceptible to the effects of passive smoking and common health issues include:

- Increased risk of wheezing, coughing and August 2015

breathlessness. - Increased risk of other respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia. - High risk of developing asthma, having more asthma attacks and using more asthma medications for a longer period of time. - Increased risk of slow lung growth. - High risk of middle ear infections. In extreme cases, children of smokers have an increased risk of meningococcal disease, which can lead to death or disability. Parents have a duty to ensure that their children grow up in a safe environment; but a home full of smoke, visible or not, is far from safe. It’s estimated that 40% of children worldwide are exposed to secondhand smoke – that’s a worrying number of innocent kids being poisoned by selfish or oblivious adults. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance which means once you start smoking, it’s difficult to stop. But despite the risks, not all smokers want to stop and are happy to continue the habit. If this is the case, there are still ways to protect your children from your second-hand smoke. - Do not smoke at home. Even if you restrict smoking to one or two designated rooms, smoke will still escape and drift through the rest of the house. - Do not allow visitors to smoke in your home. They are visitors to your home and should therefore respect your rules. - Insist that those looking after your children do not smoke in their presence and avoid smoky environments. - Do not smoke in your car. Your car is a confined space and there is no escape from the smoke. Even if you smoke when alone in your car, the poison will still be there when your children next travel with you. - Do not smoke in any other enclosed space where your children may spend time e.g. a garage or boat. - Avoid taking your children to areas where people are smoking e.g. restaurants or coffee shops. Unfortunately, even if an establishment has a no-smoking area, the smoke from the designated smoking area will pollute the

entire space and will be inhaled by everyone inside. Until a complete smoking ban is enforced in all enclosed public areas (as it is in the UK, Ireland and various other EU countries) it is best to avoid these places. Similarly, even a well ventilated car or home will do little to reduce the danger. Opening a window or using an extractor fan does not prevent smoke from seeping into furniture, carpets, curtains and vehicle upholstery; nor does the use of air conditioning. Over time, the poisonous toxins are released back into the air introducing further risk of exposure in the form of third-hand smoke. Babies and toddlers are the most vulnerable as they crawl on rugs and fall asleep on furniture saturated with smoke. For some reason, smoking is considered by many to be a social pastime; but in reality it’s one of the most anti-social behavioral habits you can adopt. As a non-smoker, I’m particularly sensitive to the smell of smoke and have refused to stay in hotel rooms previously occupied by smokers. The smell itself is disturbing enough, but the unknown damage it could cause to my health while I’m sleeping is guaranteed to cause nightmares. It’s a well known fact that children like to copy their parents so the chances are, if you smoke so will your children. This should be reason enough to try and curb the habit but the side-benefits to a smoke-free life are also worth remembering. Think of the money you will save by not smoking and imagine how good food will taste! Your hair and your clothes will smell fresh, your teeth and gums will be cleaner and you will feel fitter, healthier and more energized. But even if you don’t do it for yourself – do it for your kids. - Stop now so you are no longer exposing your kids to the risks associated with passive smoking. - Stop now so you are not setting a bad example and encouraging them to smoke when they get older. - Stop now so you are reducing the risks to your own health and no longer jeopardizing a happy, healthy future. It’s not easy kicking the habit but support is available if you’re willing to try. Ask your Doctor or Pharmacist for advice on giving up and look forward to a smoke-free life. www.kidzine.net
