Inside your eye Your eyes are at work from the moment you wake up to the moment you close them to go to sleep. They take in tons of information about the world around you — shapes, colors, movements, and more. Then they send the information to your brain for processing so the brain knows what's going on outside of your body. You can see that the eye is pretty amazing. So, come on — let's take a tour of its many parts.

Sclera (Sk-ler-a)

Cornea (Cor-nee-a)

Pupil (pew-pil)

This is the tough skin which covers the outside of the eyeball (except for the see-through cornea). We call it the 'white' of the eye.

This is the see-through skin that covers the front of your eye. It is clear like glass and it has no blood vessels in it.

This is the hole in the coloured iris. It lets light into your eye. It gets very small in bright light, and bigger in dull light.

17

Optic nerve (op-tic) The electrical messages from the retina travel along the optic nerve to your brain. It's a bit like the cable that carries all the TV pictures from your aerial to your TV so that you can see the programs. The great thing is that our eyes take these 'movies' all the time and we don't need any film or camera.

Retina (Ret-in-a) Iris (eye-ris) The iris controls the amount of light that enters the eye. The iris is the coloured part of your eye.

The lens The lens focuses light onto the retina. It changes shape to make sure that the 'picture' on the retina is as clear as possible.

www.kidzine.net

This is like a movie screen which shows the picture you are seeing -upside down. The retina has two lots of cells called 'rods' and 'cones' (because that is what they look like.) Rods can 'see' black and white. Cones can 'see' colours. They turn the picture into an electrical message for the brain. Sometimes people don't see all the colours.

First of all we need the materials: • 2 – 3 paintbrushes • A3 paper or any other kind of paper • A palette or piece of paper • black, red and brown paint

April 2015

Before we get started, some things to remember:

:‫ تذكر األشياء التالية‬، ‫قبل أن نبدأ‬

First of all, keep in mind that everything you will ever paint will be a shape, you know, like a circle, a triangle, or a square or a rectangle.

‫ ضع يف ذهنك أن كل شيء ستقوم‬،‫بداية‬

.‫ مربع أو مستطيل‬،‫ مثلث‬،‫مثل دائرة‬

We do not always need or want to paint an outline but today we will be.

‫لسنا دائما يف حاجه أو نريد أن نطلي خطوط‬

At the end of our painting session, there should be absolutely no paint on anything, including yourself!

‫ ال جيب أبدا أن يكون‬، ‫يف نهاية جلسة الطالء‬

Please do not create extra work for your Mum or your nanny!

Red Foxes actually come in different colours! They can be light brown, almost golden in colour (like their small relatives the hardy fennec fox), they can be grey, brown, black or even ginger (orange) coloured. Just like in some of our fairytales, foxes are incredibly clever and resourceful. They use their bushy tails to talk to other foxes and they also use them as a warm blanket to wrap around themselves when it gets cold. Foxes and wolves, however, are 2 different kinds of animals. A wolf is basically a wild dog. A fox is—well a fox is simply a fox!

www.kidzine.net

21

To get ready, we need the “3 Ps!” Paints, paintbrushes and paper!

1.Use the black paint to paint a triangle or “wide slice of pizza” to the right or to the left—this is the head

22

2.Paint a small rectangle—this is the fox’s body

4.The tail is next! That’ll be ‘eye shaped.

3.Still using the black paint, paint 2 legs first, then 2 more—four in total and they are long triangles like wedges of cheese

5. 2 triangle ears

April 2015

6.Paint a slightly curved line across the fox’s face, close to the bottom of the face

7. Inside that line, paint another curved line, just like in the picture

23

8. Paint 2 more curved lines inside the fox’s ears

10. Use the red paint to “colour in” the fox, but leave some white spaces, just like I’ve done here

9. We’re almost there! Our next step is tiny a zig-zag line close to the tip of the fox’s tail

11. You can use a little brown paint for the nose and voila! You can wait for the paint to dry before adding the final touch—the eyes! The Red Fox! www.kidzine.net

The Money Box

26

Omar and Hassan are twins. They do everything together. They go swimming together, play football together and listen to music together. They like the same things, especially Lego, jigsaws and strawberry jam. The brothers get 5KD pocket money every week from their parents. Omar spends his money on sweets and ice-cream but Hassan saves his in a secret money box. He likes to count it at night when his brother is asleep. One day, the boys were out shopping with their parents. Omar saw a giant jigsaw with a picture of a red sports car on the box. “Can I have that jigsaw?” he asked. “No Omar” said his mother. “It is very expensive and we need

Hassan was very quiet. He had also seen the jigsaw and he knew they would have fun fitting the pieces together until the picture of the shiny red sports car was complete. Unlike Omar, he had not spent his pocket money and could afford to buy the jigsaw. When his parents were choosing shoes for his brother, Hassan returned to buy the jigsaw and hid the box in one of his mother’s shopping bags. Later, when they were back at home, Hassan gave the jigsaw to his brother. His parents were very proud and praised him April 2015

CLINIC

You get an insanely itchy skin rash, which is triggered by allergens or irritants in the environment.

Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a disease that gives you a chronic inflammation of your skin.

The white blood cells in your immune system, confuse harmless allergens with enemy invaders.

40

To help defend you, the white blood cells try to 'fight the allergens off' by releasing powerful natural chemicals, called histamines, prostaglandins and leukotrienes, into your skin.

These make it become red, dry and extremely itchy. You are more likely to have eczema if someone in your family has it, or has asthma.

April 2015

SYMPTOMS

At first when you scratch your skin, you get a rash and the skin surface may crack open. If bacteria get into the cracks, you could get skin infections. The rash can look red, swollen and bumpy. If the itch is really bad, your skin can bleed after lots of scratching, and healing skin may look dry and flaky. You might get blisters that ooze clear fluid, and after many months of scratching, your skin can toughen, or even change colour. This is called lichenification.

You usually only get eczema on the front of your elbows, backs of your knees, ankles, hands, neck and face, but if the eczema is severe, it can affect almost any part of your skin. There are lots of treatments available to help you though.

41

TREATMENT

One of the most important things is to use moisturisers, in the form of lotions, creams or ointments. These help to stop your skin from drying out and help it to heal. Your doctor may give you corticosteroids to reduce your immune system's production of the chemicals that make you itch, and get your eczema under control quickly. You may find antihistamines useful at night time, because they can relieve your eczema symptoms, as well as making you sleepy, so you don't wake up to scratch. www.kidzine.net

ANIMAL KINGDOM

At an average height of around 5 m (16-18 ft.), the giraffe is the tallest land animal in the world.

56

‫الزرافة هي أطول حيوان بري في‬ ‫العالم ويبلغ متوسط طولها حوالي‬ )‫ قدم‬16-18( ‫ أمتار‬5

Giraffe

Giraffes live primarily in savanna areas in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. Their extreme height allows them to eat leaves and shoots located much higher than other animals can reach. In particular, they seek out acacia trees. Their long tongues are helpful in eating because they help pull leaves from the trees. Spending most of the day eating, a full-grown giraffe consumes over 45 kg (100 lb.) of leaves and twigs a day.

Characterized by its long legs, long neck, and distinctive spotted pattern, many people first believed the giraffe was a cross between a leopard and a camel, which is reflected in its scientific name, Giraffa camelopardalis.

When giraffes walk, they move both legs on one side of their body and then both legs on the other side; this is unique to giraffes. However, they run in a similar style to other mammals, swinging their rear legs and front legs in unison.

The male giraffe is both taller and heavier than the female.

Giraffes sleep less than two hours a day. In general, they sleep with their feet tucked under them and their head resting on their hindquarters, but they can also sleep for short periods of time standing up.

LIFESPAN: Healthy giraffes live about 25 years in the wild.

THREATS: Giraffes are hunted for their meat, coat and tails. The tail is prized for good luck bracelets, fly whisks and string for sewing beads. The coat is used for shield coverings. Habitat destruction and fragmentation are also threats to giraffe populations.

A male giraffe is called a bull. A female giraffe is called a cow. A baby giraffe is called a calf. A giraffe can clean their ears with their tongue! A giraffe’s tongue can be 18-20 inches long and is dark in color. Giraffes sleep very little from 5-30 minutes a day! The darker a giraffe’s spots are the older he/she is. www.kidzine.net

One day, Billy was swimming between the coral at the bottom of the sea, when suddenly, between two brilliant rocks, he saw sharks approaching him. Billy trembled with fear and the sharks could hear his teeth chattering. Billy didn´t know how to react and so looked at them and said: “Don´t eaaaaat me. Pleeeeease!” The two sharks looked at him, laughed and said: “Don´t be scared little friend. We won´t hurt you, but you have to be careful and eat something too, you are too skinny”. Billy said sadly: “I know, but my owner raised me in a fish bowl, I didn´t know what to do when he brought me here, to the sea. I don´t know what to eat or where to live. Can you help me?” The sharks said: “Sure, little one, come with us”. Billy followed them… Nowadays, Billy is a strong and healthy gold colored fish, with a big smile that illuminates even the darkest of places, as he has everything he wants. Has a warm home and two shark friends that help him and are with him all the time.

Thomas Edison Inventor of the Light Bulb

60

Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio. Edison patented 1,093 inventions in his lifetime including the kinetoscope, the phonograph, and his most famous - the incandescent lightbulb. These inventions earned him the nickname "The Wizard of Menlo Park." The Menlo Laboratory in Newark, New Jersey, was to become the first research and development lab in the world. Edison called this lab his "invention factory." In 1879, after 1,200 experiments, Edison made a lightbulb using carbonized filaments from cotton that burned for two days. With the help of an associate, Lewis Howard Latimer, who was responsible for inventing the process for manufacturing the carbon filament, the light bulb was one of Edison's greatest achievements and it changed the world. The first light bulbs were installed in a steamship and later in a New York factory. By the time Edison died in October 1931, entire cities were lit up by electricity and as a tribute to this American genius, all of America dimmed their lights for one minute in his honor.

Thomas Edison's most famous inventions The Phonograph - This was the first major invention by Edison and made him famous. It was the first machine that was able to record and playback sound.

Light Bulb - Although he did not invent

the first electric light, Edison made the first practical electric light bulb that could be manufactured and used in the home. He also invented other items that were needed to make the light bulb practical for use in homes including safety fuses and on/off switches for light sockets.

The Motion Picture - Edison did a lot of work in creating the motion picture camera and helping move forward the progress of practical movies. April 2015

61

What was Menlo Park? Menlo Park, New Jersey is where Thomas Edison built his research labs. This was the first business or institution with the sole purpose of inventing. They would do research and science and then apply it to practical applications that could be manufactured and built on a large scale. There were a lot of employees working for Edison at Menlo park. Lieutenant Colonel Harold Richard Patrick Dickson was a British colonial administrator in the Middle East from the 1920s until the 1940s, and author of several books on Kuwait.

It was then transformed into a Colonial Veranda House.

The Dickson House was a building built to serve as a Political Agent in Kuwait City for about 30 years.

Dickson House is one of the most unique historical buildings in Kuwait.

The British residents of the Dickson House were Mr. and Mrs. Dickson.

What I discovered during my visit: •There are many things to look at, such as the photos of Mr. and Mrs. Dickson and their children as well as leaders. •There were some photos of the house before it changed over time. •Different signed letters from various and important rulers of Kuwait given to Mr. Dickson. •I was amazed by the expensive furniture in the house that Mr. and Mrs. Dickson used to own. •The Dickson house has a great amount of space inside where visitors are able to sit and enjoy the weather.

The style of the building is a BritishIndian colonial architecture in Kuwait, which is fit for dry and hot weather.

Most houses in Britain have a letter box in the front door, usually a simple slot with a flap over it, through which the post is delivered each morning. The Post Office first encouraged people to provide these in 1849. Similar letter boxes were provided at post offices for people sending letters. One such letter box which was originally in the wall of the Wakefield Post Office has the date 1809 on it and is probably the oldest British letter box still in existence. The red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public telephone designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott is a familiar sight on the streets. The colour red was chosen to make them easy to spot. London is the capital city of England and is home to over 8.6 million people. It is the 9th largest city in the world.

It takes almost 7 hours to fly the 2,907 miles from Kuwait to London Heathrow Airport. London Heathrow Airport is a major international airport in West London, England, United Kingdom. Heathrow is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic. 83

Once you have arrived in London, you may choose to ride in one of their famous ‘black cab’ taxis or you could take the underground instead. This is also called the tube. It was introduced over 150 years ago and serves 270 stations, most of which are beneath the city.

The Union Jack is the national flag of Great Britain. If the Queen is at home in Buckingham Palace, you will see the flag flying above the Palace. Buckingham Palace is guarded by the Queens Guards, famous for their bright red jackets and tall bearskin hats.

The London Bus is one of London's principal icons, the archetypal red rearentrance Routemaster being recognised worldwide. The currency in Great Britain is the Great British Pound, also known as Pound Sterling.

There are four distinct seasons in Great Britain; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Summertime can be very hot, particularly in the city. In winter it can snow causing problems for trains, planes and even pedestrians who can slip over on the ice. London hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 attracting over 680,000 visitors to the city from overseas.

English is the spoken language in London but many nationalities live in the city and more than 300 languages are spoken.

The London Eye looks like a giant big wheel. It was opened in 1999 and is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions. Each of the 32 capsules (or pods) can carry 25 people giving them a wonderful view of the capital. St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most famous sights in London. It sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in London and is instantly recognizable by its giant dome. The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana was held at St. Paul’s on 29th July 1981.

Nelson’s Column can be found in Trafalgar Square. The monument is 52 meters high and was built to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Thousands of people gather here every day to see the column and to feed the pigeons.

Many years ago, a friendly bear was discovered in Paddington Station and has been known as Paddington Bear ever since. He is as famous for his hat and duffle coat as he is for his love of marmalade sandwiches.

1. What is the National Flag of Great Britain? 2. What is the name of the friendly bear discovered in a London train station? 3. What are the Queen’s Guards hats made from? 4. When was Punch & Judy first performed in London? 5. In what year did London host the Olympic Games? 6. How high is Nelson’s Column? 7. By what name is the London underground also known? 8. How many pods are there on the London Eye? 9. Where did Prince Charles & Lady Diana get married? 10. What shape is the Shard skyscraper?

Big Ben is the name of the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster. You will also find the Houses of Parliament here. The bell inside the clock tower weighs more than 13 tons. There is a special light above each clock face which lights up when Parliament is in session.

The Shard is currently the tallest building in Europe at 309 meters high. It has an observation deck on the 72nd floor which was opened to the public on 1st February 2013. The Shard is a glass fronted, pyramid shaped skyscraper with a total of 87 floors. The first performance of the popular puppet show Punch & Judy took place in Covent Garden, London in 1662 and a similar puppet show has been seen there every year since!

10 BENEFITS OF COOKING AND COOKING ROLE PLAY It might require a fair bit of preparation and clearing up afterwards, but there’s no denying that most children love to have some creative fun in the kitchen or engage in imaginative play with pretend foods. We’ve summarised 10 top reasons why this sort of play is so important to a child’s development. 3) Practising numeracy skills Weighing out ingredients, counting eggs, measuring sugar, such processes compound a youngster’s understanding of mathematics. Simple addition, subtraction and even division can also be practised once the cookies/pizza/cupcakes are removed from the oven – real or otherwise!

4) Developing time telling Cooking with children is a great chance for them to practise telling the time, whether it’s at a very basic level of working out when the food went in to the oven, to working out how long it needs to cook for and therefore when they should check to see if it’s ready.

88

1) Boosting social skills Youngsters engaged in imaginative cooking play are likely to engage in discussion about what they are doing, observe what other play mates decide to ‘cook’ and share the ingredients or utensils they are using.

2) Improving vocabulary and reading skills Whether it’s reading the recipe or the name of ingredients, cooking play provides ample opportunities to practise basic reading skills. With each new ingredient they can extend their vocabulary and consolidate this knowledge by using the ingredient for a specific purpose. April 2015

5) Learning through sensory play Kneading, mixing, tasting, smelling, watching bread rise, these sorts of activities provide new experiences through sensory actions. Exercising each of their senses will allow them to maximise their learning potential.

6) Sparking creativity We may not approve of the ingredients they mix in to a salad/add as a pizza topping/stick on top of a cupcake but the process allows them to experiment with ingredients and flavours and simply have some control over the end result. Role play cooking with pretend ingredients is particularly useful for allowing very young chefs to go wild without the mess!

7) Tempting a fussy eater An ordinarily fussy eater may well be more tempted to try a new dish or ingredient if they have prepared it themselves or placed it on their own plate. Obviously this is not so desirable if the dish they’ve prepared is made from salt dough or plasticine!

8) Making sense of the world Discussing where an ingredient has come from, why they need to be cooked in a specific way and why some foods are better for us than others, are just some areas of discussion that help children improve their general understanding of the world around them. It can also help establish the foundations of a healthy eating attitude.

89

9) Satisfaction of completing a process Seeing the cooking process through from beginning to end creates immense satisfaction and a confidence-boosting exercise for any youngster. Having read the recipe, literally got their hands dirty mixing the ingredients and endured the wait before seeing (and sampling) the end result, is bound to make any budding young chef pretty proud.

10) Wide age range applicability Cooking and role play cooking are fun, educational experiences for a broad age spectrum of children. Preschoolers can master a simple recipe with adult help and steadily progress on to more complicated recipes. It’s also a great activity to enjoy as a family. www.kidzine.net

5 Tips for Teaching the Tough Kids

by: Josh Work 90

Every teacher remembers his or her first " tough kid"experience. Maybe the student ignored your directions or laughed at your attempts to utilize the classroom discipline steps. We all have at least one story to share and for some teachers, teaching a tough kid is a daily challenge. It seems that no matter what teaching techniques you try to pull out of your educator hat, nothing changes their behavior. I've had the privilege of teaching some tough kids. I say " privilege"for a reason. Teaching these students pushed me to be a better educator and a more compassionate person. I've detailed below five methods that have reduced misbehavior in my classroom and, better still, helped transform these students into leaders among their peers.

1. Set the Tone I firmly believe that a student's misbehavior in the past does not necessarily equate to future indiscretions. At the beginning of the school year, I would walk down to the sixth grade teachers with my new class lists and ask questions. I would inquire about who works well together, who probably should not sit next to each other, and who caused them the most grief. Not surprisingly, teachers would share the names of the same students that were their "tough kids." If I had the privilege of having any of these students in my class, I would look forward to it instead of dreading it.

Usually during the first week of school, I would try to have individual conferences with these tough kids. I'd take this as an opportunity to clear the air and wipe the slate clean. Often, these students can feel disrespected because their teachers already have preconceived ideas about how they are the troublemakers. Explain that you respect them and have high expectations for them this year. Lay the foundation for the student's understanding that you believe in him or her, because you might be the only one who genuinely does.

April 2015

2. Be a Mentor

4. Take it Personally (In a Good Way)

Unfortunately, it has been my experience that some of the toughest kids to teach come from very difficult home situations. Inconsistent housing, absentee parent(s), lack of resources, and violence are only a few examples of what some of these students have to face every day. Kids that are neglected at home can act out in school to receive attention, good or bad. They want someone to notice them and take an interest in their lives.

Teachers need to have thick skin. Students may say things in an attempt to bruise your ego or question your teaching abilities. Remember, we are working with young children and developing adults. I'm sure you said some hurtful things that you didn't mean when you were growing up. Students can say things out of frustration or boredom, or that are triggered by problems spilling over from outside of your classroom. Try to deal with their misbehavior in the classroom - they might not take you seriously if you just send them to the office every time they act out. These are the moments when they need a positive mentor the most.

Don’t forget how important you are in helping your students develop not just academically, but also socially. Make an effort to show you care about them, not just their grades. Be proactive instead of reactive. The key to being a good mentor is to be positive, available, and trustworthy. One year with a great mentor can have a lasting, positive impact on a tough kid's life.

3. Make Connections Part of being a great mentor is your ability to make connections with these tough kids. Since these students sometimes don't have anyone encouraging them or taking an interest in their lives, have a real conversation about their future or dreams. If they have nothing to share, start talking about their interests - sports, music, movies, food, clothing, friends, siblings, etc. Find a way to connect so they can relate to you. Start off small and show a genuine interest in what they have to say. Once you've made a positive connection and the student can trust you, you'd be surprised how fast they might open up to talking about their hopes, fears, home life, etc. This is when you need to exercise professional discretion and be prepared for what the student might bring up. Explain that you do not want to violate his or her trust but that, as an educator, you are required to report certain things.

Once trust has been established, remind these students that you believe in them even if they make a mistake. I've vouched for kids during grade team meetings only to have them get into a fight at lunch the same day. They make mistakes, just like we all do. It's how we respond to their slip-ups that will determine if they'll continue to trust us. Explain that you're disappointed in their actions and that you know they can do better. Don't write them off. Tough kids are used to being dismissed as hopeless. Instead, show them that you care and are willing to work with them. Helping a tough kid overcome personal issues isn't something that happens overnight, but it is a worthwhile investment in his or her future.

5. Expect Anything and Everything! All of our students come from a variety of cultures, nationalities, and home environments and these five techniques that have worked for me might barely scratch the surface of how you interact with the tough kids in your classroom. If you have another method that has helped you reach out and connect to a tough kid, please share it with us by email (info@kidzine.net).
