News Hurricane Harvey’s rains set U.S. record

12

Hurricanes are extreme storms. And when they rain, they can pour — hour after hour after hour. Just ask anyone in the vicinity of Harris County, Texas. It includes Houston, the fourth largest U.S. city. And since a storm named Harvey made landfall as a category 4 hurricane late August 25, torrents of rain have deluged the east-central Gulf coast of Texas. The slow moving tropical cyclone stalled over the state — for days. So the water kept coming. And coming. And coming. More than 1.2 meters (4 feet) of water fell in some parts of East Texas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Houston. Flooding prompted widespread water rescues across the greater Houston area (some 80 kilometers, or 50 miles, from the coast). This region is home to nearly 6 million people. And by the fourth day of Harvey’s rains, flood waters already covered an estimated one-third of Houston’s more than 1,550 square kilometer (600 square mile) area. A rain gauge in Houston’s Cedar Bayou logged a staggering 131.78 centimeters (51.88 inches) of rain, the NWS tweeted out of its Houston office. That was as of 3:40 p.m. August 29. This surpassed the old record for a tropical storm in the continental United States. That record is 122 centimeters (48 inches). It was set in 1978, also in Texas, when tropical cyclone Amelia blew through. The only U.S. storm to drop more water in one place was Hurricane Hiki. This 1950 cyclone unleashed 132 centimeters (52 inches) of water on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. (Those rains triggered dozens of mudslides and more.) When measurements of Harvey’s totals are complete, scientists expect it will have toppled Hiki’s record. Meanwhile, even six days into the disaster, conditions in Texas had not abated. Since Harvey hit, at least 6 million Texans have seen more than 76 centimeters (30 inches) of rain, the NWS reports. It has summed up this storm as simply an “unprecedented and historic” rainfall “catastrophe.”

Get Ready For A Close Encounter With A Massive Asteroid!

Earlier this month, millions of Americans were treated to a rare spectacle: a total solar eclipse that was visible from coast-to-coast. While Florence, a massive asteroid that will zip past our planet on September 1, will not overshadow the stunning event, it will make history of its own. According to Paul Chodas at the Center for Near Earth Object (NEO) Studies, the space rock is the largest to pass this close to our planet since the first near-Earth asteroid was discovered over a century ago. Though many small NEOs enter our atmosphere harmlessly on a regular basis, the average size of comets or asteroids whose orbits have come into proximity with Earth is about 460 feet (140 meters) In comparison, the Spitzer Space Telescope estimates Florence is an impressive 2.7 miles (4,345 meters) across, or about a third of the size of the asteroid believed to have caused dinosaurs to become extinct. Luckily, according to NASA experts, the closest Florence will get is about 4.4 million miles, or approximately 18 times the distance between the Earth and the moon. While that is far enough to rule out a possible collision, it is close enough to view with binoculars and telescopes from late August to early September. More importantly, Florence’s proximity will give scientists the rare opportunity to observe the asteroid in detail. Studying this largely unaltered rock debris, from when the solar system was created about 4.6 billion years ago, will give researchers some insights into the formation process of Earth and other planets. Discovered in March 1981 by American astronomer Schelte “Bobby” Bus at Australia’s Siding Spring Observatory, Florence was named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The asteroid hasn’t been this close to Earth since 1890, and won’t approach us again until 2500. Though most NEO’s aren’t nearly as large as the visiting behemoth, they’re not a rare occurrence. In 2016, more than 15,000 asteroids were classified as near-earth objects, and about 1,500 previously unknown ones are discovered each year. Though this might sound concerning, even those that get significantly close to our planet don’t necessarily pose a risk. In March of this year, an asteroid the size of a bus caught experts by complete surprise when it soared within 202,000 miles of Earth — nearer than the distance between the Earth and the moon. Fortunately, it had no intention of landing on our planet. September 2017

Early Earth may have been a hot doughnut

In its early youth, Earth might have spent some time shaped like a hot, spinning jelly doughnut. That’s a suggestion just offered up by two planetary scientists. Doughnut Earth would have existed some 4.5 billion years ago. Back then, our rocky planet was spinning through space when it likely smacked into a Mars-sized hunk of rotating rock called Theia (THAY-ah). This, in fact, is one nowpopular explanation for how our moon came to be. It was flung off as a rocky shard released by that collision. That massive smashup may have turned Earth into a blob of mostly vaporized rock. And the planet’s center would likely have been indented, as if squeezed by cosmic fingers. A new computer modeling study came up with this likely shape. Simon Lock of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and Sarah Stewart at the University of California, Davis, reported their computer’s new assessment May 22 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. Lock and Stewart also came up with a new term to describe the geological-jelly-doughnut shape that Earth would have resembled. They call it synestia (Sih-NES-tee-uh), from syn-

(meaning together) and Hestia, the Greek goddess of home, hearth and architecture. The semi-flattened orb might have ballooned out to about 100,000 kilometers (or some 62,000 miles) across or more. Prior to the collision, Earth’s diameter had only been some 13,000 kilometers (8,000 miles) or so. Why the temporary, smooshed up shape? Much of Earth’s rock would have vaporized as it continued to spin quickly. Centrifugal force due to this spinning would have flattened the shape of the now-softened Earth. If Earth went through a synestia state, it was short-lived. An object Earth’s size would have cooled quickly. This would have returned the planet back into a solid, spherical rock. It would likely have taken no more than 100 to 1,000 years to return to its former shape, Lock and Stewart conclude. Rocky bodies may become synestic several times before settling into a permanent orb-like shape, they say. To date, however, no one has seen a synestia in space. But the weird structures could be out there, Lock and Stewart suggest. They might be awaiting discovery in solar systems far away.

Binge-watching television causes sleep problems New research shows that binge-watching television can adversely affect your health. Binge-viewing involves excessive watching of back-to-back TV shows in a single sitting. It has become prevalent across the world with the advent of online streaming and downloading services. Researchers from the University of Michigan in the USA and the Leuven School for Mass Communication Research in Belgium surveyed 423 people aged 18-25 on their TVviewing habits. Their research found that binge-viewing greatly interrupted sleep patterns. Co-author Professor Jan Van den Bulck said: "Our study signals that binge-viewing is prevalent in young adults and that it may be harmful to their sleep." The researchers asked participants about their sleep quality, levels of fatigue and prevalence of insomnia. They also enquired about their frequency of binge-watching programs on televisions, laptops and desktop computers. Over 80 per cent of the participants reported binge-watching, with 20 per cent doing so several times a week. Binge-watchers are 98 per cent more likely to experience poor sleep quality. A researcher said: "Bingeable TV shows have plots that keep

the viewer tied to the screen. We think they become intensely involved with the content and may keep thinking about it when they want to go to sleep." She said this caused people problems when trying to sleep. September 2017

The peacock is native to Asia.

22

‘Peacock’ actually only refers to the male bird. The female is called a ‘peahen’. The correct name of the species is ‘Peafowl’.

There are three species: Indian (Blue) Peafowl, Green Peafowl and Congo Peafowl.

A family of peafowl is called a ‘bevy’ and a group is called a ‘party’.

They build their nests on the ground.

They are one of the largest flying birds and can reach 5 feet in length (including the tail). September 2017

They can live up to 20 years both in the wild and in captivity.

Peacocks have spurs on their heels to allow them to defend themselves. When a peacock or peahen senses danger, it flies away and hides in trees. They spend nights in trees for the same reason.

23

Peacocks are well known and easily recognised by their tail. The tail feathers have spots surrounded with red, green and gold. The colours are beautiful, particularly in the reflection of light.

Peafowl are omnivores which means they eat both plants and animals. Their diet includes insects, flowers, seeds and reptiles.

A peahen will choose its partner based on the length, width and colour of his tail which can be arched into a beautiful fan of feathers.

September 2017

They may have a beautiful tail, but peacocks are said to have very ugly legs and make a rather unpleasant sound.

Peacocks will usually mate with more than one female.

Peahens lay between 3 and 5 eggs. The young birds hatch after 28 days.

The Indian Peacock is the national bird of India.

Jesse W. Reno Inventor of the escalator Jesse Wilford Reno was born on 4th August 1861 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. His brother, Conrad Reno, was an attorney.

26

Their father, Jesse L. Reno, commanded the 9th Corps of the US Army during the American Civil War. Little is known of Jesse’'s early life other than he graduated from Lehigh University with an engineering degree in mining in 1883. He also received a metallurgical degree (the study of metals). September 2017

Jesse went on to invent the first working escalator in 1891. It was first put to use at the Old Iron Pier in Coney Island, New York City, as an amusement park ride! GREAT MINDS

His invention was known as the ‘inclined elevator.’ 27

It climbed seven feet off the ground.

An earlier steam powered invention by Nathan Ames, known as ‘revolving stairs’ was patented on 9th March 1859 but was never built. September 2017

He was an admirer of ancient monuments and praised Muslim rulers for protecting and preserving pre-Islamic monuments and artifacts.

28

But this wasn’t his only invention. Jesse also invented an aircraft carrier (a floating airfield driven by propeller) and a submersible vehicle for salvaging shipwrecks.

He went on to build escalators for a number of subway systems in the US and even designed a spiral escalator for the London underground. This, however, never made it beyond the design stage.

Harrods in London was one of the first department stores to install the moving stairs.

September 2017

In 1902, he founded the Electric Stairways and Conveyors Company.

The respected inventor died on 2nd June 1947 in Pelham Manor, New York.

Jesse later sold the patent for his ‘Reno Inclined Elevator’ to Otis Elevator.

Questions:

1. Jesse received a degree in which two subjects? 2. How high did his first escalator climb? 3. Who invented the revolving stairs? 4. On what date did Jesse receive his patent? 5. You may be surprised to learn that a coconut is a fruit!

Botanically speaking, it is oneseeded ‘drupe’ which can be called a fruit, a nut or a seed. 30

It has three layers – the exocarp (outer layer), mesocar (middle layer) and endocarp (hard layer surrounding the seed).

Because every part of the coconut is used, it’s often called the ‘Fruit of Life’.

September 2017

They are used for drink, food, fuel, musical instruments, fibre and utensils to name just a few!

They are thought to originate from New Guinea.

Coconuts grow on coconut palm trees. They thrive in the tropics and subtropics. The trees can grow up to 30 meters high.

They grow in over 80 countries. The top three coconut producing countries are the Philippines, Indonesia and India.

In the early stages of its growth, a coconut contains high levels of water which can be consumed straight from the shell!

31

Coconut water is growing in popularity as a sports drink as it contains high levels of protein, dietary fibre, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and natural sugars. Coconut water can be used as a substitute for blood plasma. The high levels of sugar and salt make it possible to add the water to the bloodstream (similar to how an IV solution works in medicine). In World War II it was used in tropical areas for emergency transfusions. September 2017

In Thailand and Malaysia, pig-tailed macaques (a type of monkey) are trained to pick coconuts! Competitions are even held to find the fastest!

The Maldives has a coconut palm on its national Coat of Arms.

32

QUESTIONS 1. What is the outer layer of a coconut called? 2. Which countries are the top 3 coconut producers? 3. How tall does a coconut palm grow? 4. How are coconuts used as a mosquito repellent? 5. What is a pig-tailed macaque? 6. Which country has a coconut on its coat of arms? 7. Because every part of a coconut is used, it is often called what? 8. What was coconut water used for in World War II? 9. Coconut water contains low levels of sugar – true or false? 10. Why is it dangerous to walk beneath a coconut palm tree? September 2017

Coconut is a popular ingredient in cakes and desserts and in yogurt and icecream. It is also widely used in savoury dishes including curry.

In addition to food and drink, coconuts are also used for cosmetic purposes and as a mosquito repellent (by burning the husk).

33

Falling coconuts kill around 150 people every year! Be careful if you’re walking beneath a coconut palm tree! ANSWERS: 1.Exocarp, 2.The Philippines, Indonesia, India, 3.Up to 30 meters, 4.By burning the husk, 5.Monkey, 6.The Maldives, 7.Fruit of Life, 8.Emergency transfusions, 9.False (high levels), 10.A coconut could fall and kill you! Fungal Infections What do you think of when you hear the word fungus? Do you think of mushrooms? A mushroom is one type of fungus, but fungus also refers to a type of germ that lives on all of us. This germ is harmless most of the time, but sometimes it can cause a problem called a fungal infection. It sounds gross, but don't worry or feel embarrassed. A lot of people get fungal infections, but they're usually easy to treat because a fungus rarely spreads below the skin.

36

September 2017

What Is a Fungal Infection? Fungi, the word for more than one fungus, can be found on different parts of the body. Here are some common types of fungal infections:

Tinea is a type of fungal infection of the hair, skin, or nails. When it's on the skin, tinea usually begins as a small red area the size of a pea. As it grows, it spreads out in a circle or ring. Tinea is often called ringworm because it may look like tiny worms are under the skin (but of course, they're not!). Athlete's foot is another type of

fungal infection that usually appears between the toes but can also affect toenails and the bottom or sides of the feet.

Jock itch is a fungal infection of the groin and upper thighs. You might think only men and boys get it, but girls and women can get it, too. Candida is a yeast, similar to a fungus. It most often affects the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. Diaper rash in babies can be from one type of candidal infection, as can thrush (white patches often found in the mouths of babies).

Pityriasis versicolor is a rash ATHLETE'S FOOT

caused by a fungus that normally lives on human skin. It can appear over the chest, shoulders, and back, and is common in teenagers. September 2017

Why Do Kids Get Fungal Infections? Lots of kids get fungal infections. Kids love to share and hang out together. Some of these infections are contagious, which means they easily spread from person to person. Close contact or sharing a comb or hairbrush with someone who has tinea can spread the fungus from one person to another. Because fungi need a warm, dark, and humid place to grow, public showers, pools, locker rooms, and even the warmth of shoes and socks can give fungi the perfect opportunity to strike. Taking antibiotics can cause some kids to get a yeast infection. Antibiotics get rid of germs that make us sick, but they can also kill many of the harmless bacteria in our body. These harmless bacteria normally fight with the yeast for a place to live, but when antibiotics kill them, the yeast is free to grow. Sometimes, a fungus may infect kids if they have an immune system disorder (this means their bodies can't fight certain types of infections). This is rare, but it does happen. 38

How Do I Know If I Have a Fungal Infection?

Many skin problems look like a fungal infection so the best way to know for sure is to ask your doctor. Here are some signs you and a parent can look for: Athlete's foot causes symptoms that include red, dry, cracked, and itchy skin between the toes. Some people also have red, scaly bumps filled with pus on the bottoms and sides of their feet. Jock itch appears as a rash with elevated edges in the groin area. It's itchy and often feels like it is burning. It's pretty common, especially if you play sports. Sweating and wearing athletic equipment can bring on this kind of rash. Ringworm of the head begins as a small bump or scaly patch that looks like dandruff. The pimple or patch becomes larger and the hair in the infected area can become brittle and break off. This can create scaly patches of baldness, but the hair will grow back. If you have ringworm on your arms, legs, or chest, you may see small red spots that grow into large rings. Candida yeast causes the skin in the infected area to itch. The skin also might be red and swollen. Pityriasis versicolor, also caused by a yeast, makes lots of round and ovalshaped flat, pale patches on the skin, especially the chest, upper arms, and sometimes the face and neck. September 2017

Farewell to Fungus!

Getting rid of a fungal infection is not too hard. Your doctor may decide to scrape a small amount of the irritated skin or clip off a piece of hair or nail and look at it under a microscope or do a culture. Once your doctor knows what kind of infection you have, special antifungal creams and shampoos can help to get rid of it. Sometimes the doctor will prescribe a medicine to take by mouth. Make sure you take the medicine for as long as the doctor tells you.

World Heart Day Friday, September 29 Heart health is at the heart of all health. When you look after your heart it means eating and drinking well, exercising, stopping smoking... all the things that make you not only healthier, but also feel good and able to enjoy your life to the fullest. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability in the world, killing 17.5 million people a year. That's a third of all deaths on the planet and half of all non-communicable-disease-related deaths. Around 80% of these deaths are in low- and middle-income countries where human and financial resources are least able to address the CVD burden.

40

World Heart Day plays a crucial role in changing all of this. It is a vital global platform that we, as well as our members and supporters, can use to raise awareness and encourage individuals, families, communities and governments to take action now. Together we have the power to reduce the burden of, and premature deaths from, CVD, helping people everywhere to live longer, better, heart-healthy lives.
