From The Editor Hi Kids, Welcome to the October issue of Kidslife. As well as the popular tradition of Halloween, the month of October also recognizes the importance of more serious issues like the shortage of food and the value of our eye sight. World Food Day and World Sight Day both take place in the month of October and you can read all about both in this issue of Kidslife. Taking of food, when did you last eat a raspberry? You may be familiar with the taste, but can you guess which country produces the most raspberries? Find out inside. Our ‘Great Mind’ this month features a very clever man whose invention resulted from a little spilled ink on an insurance contract. Can you guess what it is? Other features include the Canadian city of Montreal, the Turtle and that irritating pest, the head louse.

VTech Kidizoom Flix Flix is a funky, friendly alien who is able to recognise faces – which means he’ll know your child when they talk to him (pretty cool, huh). You can change Flix’s eyes and skin colour, and he'll repeat words and phrases back in his quirky alien voice. He has a 2MP camera to take secret photos and videos (which sounds like trouble). You can take him off his tripod to carry him around anywhere. Oh, and he comes in this rather fetching blue – or pink, if you prefer.

Brave Dog Saves Family Goats And Stray Deer From California Wildfires

12

News

Thanks to hardworking firefighters and tamer winds, the devastating fires that have been ravaging parts of Northern California since October 8 finally appear to be under control. While some of the 100,000 evacuees are now being allowed back home, with 217,000 acres burned and more than 5,700 structures destroyed, many are returning to charred remains. Among them is Roland Hendel and his family. The Sonoma County residents were among the first forced to flee their homes with just a few minutes warning at 11:00 pm the night the fires began. While Hendel managed to put most of his pets into the car, one of his dogs, Odin, who protects the family’s eight bottle-fed rescue goats from coyotes and mountain lions at night, refused to leave his wards. With the fire descending upon the house at an unprecedented speed, there was no time to load the goats, leaving Hendel with no option but to take off without his precious 1.5-year-old dog. When Hendel was finally allowed to return to his incinerated house on October 15, he saw a miraculous sight he had not dared to hope for: “a burned, battered, and weakened Odin surrounded by his eight goats.” The smart dog had not only managed to save the goats, but also some baby deer, by guiding them to a clearing that was protected from the flames by high rocks. Though delighted to see his owner, Odin really perked up at the sight of his sister Tessa, who had evacuated with Hendel. Odin and his goats are currently recovering from the ordeal at the Sonoma Fairgrounds where the special dog is being treated as a hero. While Hendel was unable to take the deer, he did leave them with two weeks of food and water. Not surprisingly, the story of the dog’s bravery has spread almost as fast on social media, as the wildfire that destroyed his home, helping raise more than $65,000 for the pooch and his family. Hendel plans to use the funds to pay for Odin’s medical care, repair a pumphouse that provides fresh water, and build a barn to keep the goats safe during winter. Since the funds that keep pouring in far surpass his original needs, he has decided to use the additional money towards a trailer for Odin and his goats, in case of future emergencies, and donate the rest to the Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue Center. Despite losing his home, the Sonoma County resident says, “We feel really blessed. All those other things can be replaced, or you realize they’re not necessary.”

Giant Balloons Help Restore Wireless Service to StormRavaged Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria, which tore through Puerto Rico in late September, knocked down 95 percent of the island’s cell towers and electric poles. While cellular telephone and utility companies have been frantically trying to restore the services, approximately 80% of Puerto Rico still has no wireless service or electricity. On Friday, October 20, X, the innovation laboratory of Google’s parent company Alphabet, helped restore connectivity to a few lucky residents by deploying two of their massive Project Loon balloons. Floating 60,000 feet above the Caribbean islands, they enabled customers of cell phone carrier AT&T to connect to basic text, email and web services. If all goes well, the company plans to send an additional 28 balloons, enough to bring back wireless service to not just the residents of Puerto Rico, but also, the nearby US Virgin Islands that was also impacted by the storms. The balloons, which can provide uninterrupted signals for up to six months, will give cellular companies enough time to repair the ground towers. The translucent, helium-filled balloons, which aim to bring the Internet to even the most rural areas of the world, are made using lightweight polyethylene fabric that can withstand 62 mph (100 km/hr) winds, intense UV radiation, and the stratosphere’s dramatic temperature swings. Each 49-foot diameter sphere is fitted with powerful transmitters capable of re-distributing 4G LTE internet signals, received from ground stations, to a land area 80 km in diameter. This means a single balloon can serve thousands of people. The “cell towers in the sky” are powered by solar panels that require just four hours of sunlight to collect and store enough energy to keep the balloons afloat for an entire day. Balloons that need maintenance or replacement are automatically herded to a central collection point. In case of a malfunction, a parachute will deploy and bring it safely back to Earth. Though Project Loon, which began testing over New Zealand skies in 2013, has been unable to accomplish its ambitious mission of providing internet to the world, it has been instrumental in assisting communities struck by natural disasters. In addition to helping Puerto Rico, the balloons also provided wireless connection to tens of thousands of Peru residents who were cut off from the world, following catastrophic floods, earlier this year. Now, if someone could only figure out how to launch an “electric tower in the sky” to help the millions of Puerto Rico residents that still don’t have power. October 2017

Musician Plays Saxophone While Undergoing Brain Surgery Asking a patient to hum piano melodies and play an instrument while undergoing brain surgery may sound like a strange request from a doctor. However, that is precisely what a team of brain specialists, led by University of Rochester Medical Center’s Web Pilcher, requested Dan Fabbio to do as they were removing his tumor. The chain of events that led to this unprecedented medical feat began in 2015, when the then 25-year-old professional musician was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumor. Though the swelling was benign, it was located in the part of the brain known to be active when people listen to and make music. "Removing a tumor from the brain can have significant consequences depending upon its location," Pilcher says. "Both the tumor itself and the operation to remove it can damage tissue and disrupt communication between different parts of the brain." Fabbio, therefore, feared the surgery would cause him to lose his musical ability, which was not just his means of livelihood but also his passion. To prevent that from happening, Pilcher and his colleague Brad Mahon, a cognitive neuroscientist, spent six months mapping the functional and structural organization of the musician’s brain. They devised numerous tests, including asking Fabbio to listen to piano melodies and hum back the tunes during MRI scans. This enabled the physicians to pinpoint the region that is crucial for music and language processing and create a three-dimensional map of Fabbio's brain. Though that was a great starting point, it was not a foolproof way to prevent Pilcher and his medical team from inadvertently impacting the area responsible for the young man’s musical talent. The only way to do that was to keep the patient awake and ask him to hum piano melodies during the surgery so that the surgeons could identify the areas to

avoid. To ensure Fabbio was accurately repeating the tunes being played to him, they asked Elizabeth Marvin, a professor of music theory at Rochester University's Eastman School of Music, to score each cognitive test in real-time. While the surgery went without incident, the real test came when Fabbio was asked play a song on his saxophone. The tune had been modified to ensure that it would not require too much exertion and cause harm to the stitches in the brain. "He played it flawlessly, and when he finished, the entire operating room erupted in applause," says Marvin. "It made you want to cry." The researchers, who outlined the procedure in detail in the September 11, 2017 issue of Current Biology, say that a year after the groundbreaking surgery, Fabbio’s musical abilities are as good as they were before the tumor formed. The young musician can once again hear melodies in everything — even his electric toothbrush!

Boy Forwards Money He Found to Soccer Player Because ‘We Can’t Keep What’s Not Ours’ While some might be excited to pocket a $5 bill found on the street, this young man was more excited to pass on his good fortune to someone else: his favorite soccer player. 9-year-old Adam Bhana was leaving a football game between Huddersfield Town and Manchester United at the John Smith’s Stadium this weekend when he saw a £5 note on the ground. Instead of keeping the money, however, Adam said that “we can not keep what is not ours”. He and his father then asked a few nearby pedestrians if they had dropped any money. When they all said no, Adam’s dad told him to give it to someone else. A few days later, Huddersfield director Sean Jarvis received a letter from Adam containing the £5 note. The letter asked Jarvis if he could pass the cash along to the Huddersfield midfielder Adam Mooy “because he played very well and scored” during Saturday’s game. Mooy was so touched by the gesture, he took to social media earlier this week and said he would “love to meet Adam”. The 9-year-old and the midfielder are set to meet up with each other on Friday.

As for Adam’s father, he says he is proud of his son’s generosity. “To begin with, he was undecided. He wanted to maybe give it to the club for a transfer of Ronaldo from Real Madrid to Huddersfield but then he decided to give it to Mooy instead,” he told BBC 5 Radio. “They’ve been great.” October 2017

MONTREAL

Montreal is the second most populated city in Canada.

It takes approximately 12 hours to fly from Kuwait to Montreal.

MONTREAL

You will arrive at Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, 12 miles outside Downtown Montreal. The airport is named after the 15th Prime Minister of Canada. 18

The city has efficient train, bus and metro systems. There is also a Bixi-bike rental system.

It has four distinct seasons including hot summers and very cold, snowy winters.

It was named after Mount Royal, the triple peaked hill in the city. You can’t miss Mount Royal. Its hills stand at 233m, 211m and 201m high. October 2017

You should take a stroll through Mount Royal Park. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York’s Central Park. The park has a lake, a ski-slope and a sculpture garden.

Montreal currently hosts the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix and is the only Canadian city to have held the Summer Olympic Games.

When visiting, schedule a trip to Notre-Dame Basilica. Construction of this Gothic Revival style church began in 1824 and it stands at 60 metres tall (200 ft).

The Olympic stadium, nicknamed ‘the Big O’ is situated in Olympic Park. It has the largest seating capacity of any stadium in Canada. Its roof is shaped like a doughnut.

19

The national flag of Canada is known as the ‘Maple Leaf’. It is red with a white square at the centre. Inside the square is a red 11 pointed maple leaf.

The Old Port of Montreal is a historic port attracting over 6 million visitors every year. You can enjoy everything here from Segways, pedalos and pleasure boating, to fishing or sunbathing at Plage de l'Horloge (Clock Tower Beach).

Olympic Park is also home to Montreal Biodome. Originally a velodrome hosting track cycling and judo events, it is now part of a natural science complex where you can walk through replicas of four ecosystems found in the Americas. These are Tropical Forest, Laurentian Forest, Saint Lawrence Marine and Sub-Polar Region.

The clock tower at the Old Port is known as the Sailors’ Memorial Clock. It was opened in 1922 as a memorial to the Canadian sailors who died in the First World War. You should climb the 192 steps and enjoy the view!

Parc Jean-Drapeau is another popular tourist destination in Montreal. It has an amusement park, a beach, a museum, aquatics centre and a snowboarding park!

20

For something a little more ‘local’ head to Jean-Talon Market. This year-round farmer’s market has around 300 stalls and you can buy everything from spices, fish and cheese to flowers, fruit and vegetables. October 2017

In 2006 Montreal was named a UNESCO City of Design, in recognition of the city’s design community. Only two other cities in the world can boast this distinguished title (Buenos Aires and Berlin).

If you‘re visiting in June/July, you may get to see the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the largest jazz festival in the world. Be prepared for crowds though, it attracts over 2 million visitors!

In Montreal’s Central Business District you will find the Underground City. This is a series of interconnected shopping centers, universities, office towers, hotels and performing arts venues. In addition to the underground tunnels there is also a sky bridge. The city is known as ‘the RÉSO’ and is used by over 500,000 people every day.

When in Montreal, you should try ‘poutine’, the national dish of Canada. This consists of fries, cheddar cheese curds and gravy. Delicious but full of calories!

Turtles are cold-bloodied reptiles.

They have existed for over 220 million years!

There are around 300 different species of turtles.

22

They are divided into two groups, according to how they retract their necks. The Cryptodira retract their necks backwards into their shell, whereas the Plerodira contract their necks to the side.

A group of turtles is called a ‘bale’.

They have webbed feet and live in lakes, rivers or in the ocean. October 2017

They are amniotes, which means they breathe air and do not lay eggs under water.

Turtles lay their eggs in sand, dirt or grass by digging holes and burying them. Some lay only a few eggs, others lay over 1,000 at a time!

If a turtle stays under water for too long it will drown.

The upper shell of the turtle is called the carapace. The lower shell is called the plastron.

The colour of the shell may vary. They are commonly brown, black or green but some species have a red, orange or yellow shell.

23

One of the most colourful turtles is the Eastern Painted Turtle. This has a yellow plastron and a black carapace with red markings around the rim.

Turtles have no teeth so they use their jaws to cut and chew food. They use their tongues to swallow food.

By counting the rings on its shell, it is possible to estimate the age of a turtle. However, it’s quite a complicated calculation and not always accurate!

October 2017

They have excellent night vision due to the large number of rod cells in their retinas.

Although rarely heard, turtles do actually make sounds when communicating. Their calls are often short and low frequency.

You can tell the gender of a turtle by the sound it makes. The males grunt and the females hiss.

Their diet depends on the species. Some are carnivore, others are herbivore. Sea turtles typically feed on jellyfish. The Green Sea Turtle, however, does not eat meat and will feed mainly on algae.

One of the biggest turtles is the Alligator Snapping Turtle. It can grow up to 2.5 feet long and weigh as much as 200 pounds!

A turtle can live between 40 and 100 years.

Only 10% of sea turtles make it to adulthood.

Lewis E. Waterman Inventor of the capillary feed fountain pen Lewis Edson Waterman was born in Decatur, New York on 18th November 1837.

His first job was that of an insurance broker.

26

In 1883, he was due to sign a big contract with a client and purchased a fountain pen for the important occasion. Unfortunately, the pen was faulty and it leaked ink onto the contract.

Lewis was extremely upset about the spillage and returned to his office to prepare new documents. When he returned, ready to sign the new contract, another insurance broker had closed the deal, stealing the client from Lewis. October 2017

Lewis was very frustrated at losing the contract and, based in his brother’s workshop, decided to make better fountain pens that did not leak! GREAT MINDS

He founded the Waterman Pen Company the same year and invented a new pen using the ‘capillarity’ principle. This method used air to induce a steady flow of ink and therefore avoided spillages. 27

In addition to the air hole in the nib, there were three grooves inside the feed mechanism.

He received a patent for his invention on February 12th 1884.

He called his pen ‘the Regular’ and decorated it with wood accents. October 2017

His pens were sold from behind a cigar shop and came with a five-year guarantee.

28

In 1899, Lewis opened a factory in Montreal, Canada and began manufacturing various different designs of his fountain pen.

He advertised in a trendy magazine, The article on Assessment, and sales began to grow.

In 1900, Waterman Pen Company exhibited its pens in the highly respected ‘Exposition Universelle’ in Paris.

He died in Brooklyn, New York in 1901. October 2017

His nephew, Frank D. Waterman took over the business and began selling overseas. As a result, sales increased to 350,000 pens each year. He renamed the business Waterman S.A. Waterman S.A. was acquired by Sanford in 2001 and became part of the Parker Pen Company. Lewis E. Waterman was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.

Amongst his other inventions was a successful method of preserving grape juice.

Questions:

1. What was Waterman’s first job? 2. On what date did he receive his patent? 3. What did he call his pen? 4. Where did he open his factory? 5. In which magazine did he advertise his pens? 6. How many grooves were inside the feed mechanism? 7. What happened in 2006? 8. His pens came with a three-year guarantee – true or false? 9. Who took over the business when he died 10. What else did Waterman invent?

ANSWERS:1.Insurance Broker, 2.February 12th 1884, 3.The Regular, 4.Montreal, Canada, 5.The article on Assessment, 6.Three, 7.He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, 8.False – Five-year, 9.His nephew, Frank D. Waterman, 10.A successful method of preserving grape juice October 2017

Raspberries have been eaten since prehistoric times. However, they only began to be cultivated in the 1600s.

30

There are over 200 different species of raspberries but only 2 are grown on a large scale.

Russia is the largest producer of raspberries in the world.

The raspberry belongs to the rose family.

An average raspberry has between 100 and 200 seeds.

October 2017

Not all raspberries are red/purple. They can also be gold or black in colour. The gold ones are the sweetest variety.

Unlike many fruits, unripe raspberries do not ripen after they have been picked.

When picking raspberries, look for berries that are firm and dark in colour. They should not be soft or mushy.

31

When picked, the stem of a raspberry remains with the plant. If you pick a blackberry, the fruit comes away from the plant with the core still intact in the center of the berry. This is how you tell the difference between the two fruits. October 2017

The leaves of a raspberry have toothed edges. They are green on the upper side and white on the bottom.

One single plant can produce hundreds of raspberries every year.

The fruit is an excellent source of vitamins C, E and B9 and is a great source of dietary fiber.

32

QUESTIONS 1. Which country is the largest producer of raspberries? 2. How many seeds are there on an average raspberry? 3. Some people consider the raspberry a symbol of what? 4. Besides red/purple, what other colours can a raspberry be? 5. What should you look for when picking raspberries? 6. Which country uses a raspberry cane to calm horses down? 7. Raspberries are high in vitamin C – true or false? 8. What happens to the stem of a raspberry when it is picked? 9. How long can the root of a raspberry survive? 10. How many species of raspberry are there? October 2017

Raspberries are delicious when eaten fresh but are also great in milkshakes, yogurts, jams and breakfast cereals as well as in cakes and other desserts. Some people consider the raspberry a symbol of kindness. The red juice is thought of as the blood running through the heart. In the Philippines, if you hang a raspberry cane outside your home, it is believed you are protected from evil spirits.

33

In Germany, it is thought that hanging a raspberry cane on a horse’s body will calm the horse down if it is agitated.

The root of a raspberry can survive up to 10 years.

ANSWERS: 1.Russia, 2.100-200, 3.Kindness, 4.Black or gold, 5.Berries that are firm and dark in colour, 6.Germany, 7.True, 8.It remains with the plant, 9.10 years, 10.Over 200 October 2017

The Way to Bea by Penny Parker Klostermann

This is a story about a mouse and a duck who get swallowed by a wolf. Early one morning a mouse met a wolf and was quickly gobbled up. When a woeful mouse is swallowed by a wolf, he quickly learns he is not alone: a duck has already set up digs, and, boy, has that duck got it figured out! Turns out it’s pretty nice in there, with delicious food and elegant table settings, courtesy of the wolf’s unchecked gluttony. And there’s something even better: no more fear of being eaten by a wolf! In fact, life is pretty good, until a hunter shows up. . . . With a nod to traditional fables and a wink to the reader, the award-winning Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen offer a tale of cooperation and creative cuisine that is sure to go down easy.

In the magical land of fairy tales, William doesn't quite fit in. He'd rather poach pears than pursue princesses, and he values gnocchi over knighthood. . . . When he stumbles on a delivery of food destined for Fairy-Tale Headquarters (a pumpkin, apples, and a few measly beans), he decides to spice things up and whips the paltry ingredients into delectable dishes. But as you might have guessed, Snow White's wicked stepmother doesn't exactly want her magic apple baked and drizzled with caramel. The team that brought you There Was an Old Dragon Who Swallowed a Knight delivers a hilariously fractured, whipped, and souffleed fairy tale that is chock-full of delicious details and jokes to satisfy every appetite!

Action and humor abound in this ode to friendship that proves that when shapeshifting monsters intrude on your plans, two heroes are better than one.

My Brigadista Year by Katherine Paterson When thirteen-year-old Lora tells her parents that she wants to join Premier Castro's army of young literacy teachers, her mother screeches to high heaven, and her father roars like a lion. Lora has barely been outside of Havana -- why would she throw away her life in a remote shack with no electricity, sleeping on a hammock in somebody's kitchen? But Lora is stubborn: didn't her parents teach her to share what she has with someone in need? Surprisingly, Lora's abuela takes her side, even as she makes Lora promise to come home if things get too hard. But how will Lora know for sure when that time has come? Shining light on a little-known moment in history, Katherine Paterson traces a young teen's coming-of-age journey from a sheltered life to a singular mission: teaching fellow Cubans of all ages to read and write, while helping with the work of their daily lives and sharing the dangers posed by counterrevolutionaries hiding in the hills nearby. Inspired by true accounts, the novel includes an author's note and a timeline of Cuban history.

After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again) by Dan Santat

From the New York Times–bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend comes the inspiring epilogue to the beloved classic nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. Everyone knows that when Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. But what happened after? Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat's poignant tale follows Humpty Dumpty, an avid bird watcher whose favorite place to be is high up on the city wall―that is, until after his famous fall. Now terrified of heights, Humpty can longer do many of the things he loves most. Will he summon the courage to face his fear? After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again) is a masterful picture book that will remind readers of all ages that Life begins when you get back up.

Her Right Foot

by Dave Eggers, Shawn Harris If you had to name a statue, any statue, odds are good you'd mention the Statue of Liberty. Have you seen her? She's in New York. She's holding a torch. And she's in mid-stride, moving forward. But why? In this fascinating, fun take on nonfiction, Dave Eggers and Shawn Harris investigate a seemingly small trait of America's most emblematic statue. What they find is about more than history, more than art. What they find in the Statue of Liberty's right foot is the powerful message of acceptance that is essential to an entire country's creation. Head Lice

The head louse is a tiny, wingless parasitic insect that lives among human hairs and feeds on tiny amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Lice (the plural of louse) are a very common problem, especially for kids. They're contagious, annoying, and sometimes tough to get rid of. But while they're frustrating to deal with, lice aren't dangerous. They don't spread disease, although their bites can make a child's scalp itchy and irritated, and scratching can lead to infection. It's best to treat head lice quickly once they're found because they can spread easily from person to person. 36

October 2017

Signs of Head Lice

Although they're very small, lice can be seen by the naked eye. Here are things to look for:

CLINIC

Lice eggs (called nits). These look like

tiny yellow, tan, or brown dots before they hatch. Lice lay nits on hair shafts close to the scalp, where the temperature is perfect for keeping warm until they hatch. Nits look sort of like dandruff, only they can't be removed by brushing or shaking them off. Unless the infestation is heavy, it's more common to see nits in a child's hair than it is to see live lice crawling on the scalp. Lice eggs hatch within 1 to 2 weeks after they're laid. After hatching, the remaining shell looks white or clear and stays firmly attached to the hair shaft. This is when it's easiest to spot them, as the hair is growing longer and the egg shell is moving away from the scalp.

Adult lice and nymphs (baby lice). The

adult louse is no bigger than a sesame seed and is grayish-white or tan. Nymphs are smaller and become adult lice about 1 to 2 weeks after they hatch. If head lice is not treated, this process repeats itself about every 3 weeks. Most lice feed on blood several times a day, and they can survive up to 2 days off the scalp.

Scratching. With lice bites come itching and scratching. This is actually due to a reaction to the saliva of lice. However, the itching may not always start right away — that depends on how sensitive a child's skin is to the lice. It can sometimes take weeks for kids with lice to start scratching. They may complain, though, of things moving around on or tickling their heads. October 2017

Small red bumps or sores from scratching. For some kids, the irritation

is mild; for others, a more bothersome rash may develop. Excessive scratching can lead to a bacterial infection (this can cause swollen lymph glands and red, tender skin that might have crusting and oozing). If your doctor thinks this is the case, he or she may treat the infection with an oral antibiotic. You may be able to see the lice or nits by parting your child's hair into small sections and checking for lice and nits with a fine-tooth comb on the scalp, behind the ears, and around the nape of the neck (it's rare for them to be found on eyelashes or eyebrows).

Are Lice Contagious?

Lice are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person, especially in group settings (like schools, childcare centers, slumber parties, sports activities, and camps).

38

Though they can't fly or jump, these tiny parasites have specially adapted claws that let them crawl and cling firmly to hair. They spread mainly through head-to-head contact, but sharing clothing, bed linens, combs, brushes, and hats also can pass them along. Kids are most prone to catching lice because they tend to have close physical contact with each other and share personal items.

Treatment

Your doctor can recommend a medicated shampoo, cream rinse, or lotion to kill the lice. These may be over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications, depending on what treatments have already been tried. Medicated lice treatments usually kill the lice, but it may take a few days for the itching to stop. For very resistant lice, an oral medication (medicine taken by mouth) might be prescribed. Make sure that the medicine is safe for your child's age. While over-the-counter shampoos are safe for kids as young as 2 months, other medicines are only safe for kids 2 years and older. It's important to October 2017

follow the directions exactly because these products are insecticides. Applying too much medication — or using it too often — can increase the risk of harm. Follow the directions on the product label. Treatment may be unsuccessful if the medication is not used correctly or if the lice are resistant to it. After treatment, your doctor may suggest combing out the nits with a fine-tooth comb and also may recommend repeating treatment in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched nits.

Removing By Hand

If your child is 2 months old or younger, you should not use medicated lice treatments. You'll need to remove the nits and lice by hand. To remove lice and nits by hand, use a fine-tooth comb on your child's wet, conditioned hair every 3 to 4 days for 3 weeks after the last live louse was seen. Wetting the hair beforehand is recommended because it temporarily immobilizes the lice and the conditioner makes it easier to get a comb through the hair.

Dont's

In your efforts to get rid of the bugs, there are some things you shouldn't do. Some don'ts of head lice treatment include: Don't use a hairdryer on your child's hair after applying any of the currently available scalp treatments because some contain flammable ingredients. A hair dryer could also cause live lice to blow into the air and spread to others nearby. Don't use a conditioner or shampoo/conditioner combination before applying lice medication. Don't wash your child's hair for 1 to 2 days after using a medicated treatment. Don't use sprays or hire a pest control company to try to get rid of the lice, as these treatments can be harmful. Head lice don't survive long once they fall off a person, so you don't need to spend a lot of time and money trying to rid the house of lice. Don't use the same medication more than three times on one person. If it doesn't seem to be working, your doctor may recommend another medication. Don't use more than one head lice medication at a time. Don't use essential oils (such as ylang ylang oil or tea tree oil) to treat lice on the scalp. Don't use chemicals such as gasoline or kerosene on the hair. These are highly flammable and should never be used to treat lice on anyone.

SEASEA RESOURCES RESOURCES The ocean is one of our greatest resources. The world’s oceans provide many useful items and functions for not only people who live on the coast, but all people. The first thing that comes to mind when we think about sea resources is food, but the sea provides many other kinds of resources as well.

TIDAL TURBINE

The world’s oceans provide energy in the form of electricity from wave action. As waves crash on the beach they drive a turbine, a kind of engine, which produces electricity that we can use in our homes and buildings.

SEA LEVEL CURRENT SEA BED

COOLING The world’s oceans are providing water for people who live in dry places. This is mostly true in other countries where there isn’t a lot of fresh water available. Salty sea water must have the salt removed before people can drink it. Huge machines in factories are necessary to make this happen. It’s called desalination.

VAPOR FRESH WATER SEA WATER HEATING

One of the most important ways we use the world’s oceans and seas is transportation. It’s not something we think about a lot, but it’s true. World Food Day 2017 October 16 The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all. World Food Day is a chance to show our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 – to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030. It’s also a day for us to celebrate the progress we have already made towards reaching #ZeroHunger. 46

Why should we care about World Food Day and #ZeroHunger? • The right to food is a basic human right. • Investing in sustainable food systems and rural development means addressing some of the major global challenges - from feeding the world’s growing population to protecting the global climate, and tackling some of the root causes of migration and displacement. • Achieving the 17 SDGs cannot happen without ending hunger, and without having sustainable and resilient, climate-compatible agriculture and food systems that deliver for the people and the planet. • Reaching #ZeroHunger is possible: out of the 129 countries monitored by FAO, 72 have already achieved the target of halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger by 2015; over the past 20 years, the likelihood of a child dying before age five has been nearly cut in half, with about 17,000 children saved every day; extreme poverty rates have been cut in half since 1990.

What is migration? Migration is the movement of people, including children, within a country or across an international border. Migrants can be divided into 2 main categories: international migrants, who cross country borders; and internal migrants, who move within the country they were born in (from a rural area to a city for example). In 2015, there were around 240 million international migrants, whereas in 2013, around 760 million people moved within their own nation. This means that there are more internal than international migrants, but moving to a town or city is often the first step before crossing international borders. Migration has always existed. It is part of the growth and change of a country, with people looking for better jobs and lives in their home country and beyond it too. So why is migration such a big challenge today?

Why is migration often the only choice? Sometimes people move because they want a new start, a new job, to study or to be reunited with family. But sometimes people are forced to migrate because of life threatening events. They include fighting and war or natural disasters that destroy their homes like earthquakes or tsunamis. Often migration can be the only option to improve people’s lives when faced with poverty and hunger, few jobs, no support from the government, few natural resources (like water or healthy soils), or climate change impacts. Finding the Average: Mean, Median, and Mode

Finding the Average: Mean, Median, and Mode In statistics, there are three kinds of averages: mean, median, and mode. -MEAN: The mean of a group of numbers is the average of the numbers. -MEDIAN: The median of a group of numbers is the number that is exactly in the middle when the numbers are arranged numerically. Note: For even sets of numbers, take the average of the middle two numbers. -MODE: The mode of a group of numbers is the number that appears most often.

Example

MEAN: Add all the numbers together (3+5+5+11+12+15+18+19+29=117) then divide (117) by the number of numbers added together (9), 5 12 19 11 15 32 18 5 3 so 117 ÷ 9 = 13. MEDIAN: In this example, the number in the middle Before you do any computing, you should always write the numbers in is 12. MODE: In this example, the number that reoccurs numerical order, from smallest to largest: the most is 5. 3 5 5 11 12 15 18 19 32 Soccer Goals
