From The Editor Hi Kids, Welcome to this special Ramadan issue of Kidslife. Ramadan is a very special time in the Muslim calendar and you can learn all about the Holy month in this May issue of Kidslife. Remember to think about those children less fortunate than yourself and do as many good deeds as you can! If you’re gift wrapping presents during Ramadan, spare a thought for the inventor of Sellotape, Richard Gurley Drew. Gift wrapping would be so much more difficult without his clever invention! As well as Ramadan, May is also the month we observe World No Tobacco Day. If you know someone who smokes, remind them they shouldn’t be doing so on May 31st. Perhaps it will be the motivation they need to stop smoking altogether! Smoking is bad for our health. Passion Fruit, on the other hand, is good for our health. You can read all about this juicy little fruit in this issue of Kidslife. You can also find out some amazing facts about that nocturnal favourite, the owl; not forgetting our Travel Diary which, this month, takes you on trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.

News Malala Yousafzai Becomes Honourary Canadian

10

Malala Yousafzai has a message for Canadian kids: Don't wait, to make a difference. Just because you're young doesn't mean you can't be a leader. Yousafzai is an activist for children's rights, and particularly the right for girls to get an education. In this case, "activist" means that she tries to get that message out, no matter how difficult that may be for her. For Yousafzai, it has been very difficult, indeed. When she was 15 years old, she was attacked on her way to school. Some people in the village where she lived in Pakistan didn’t think girls should be allowed to get an education. They didn’t like Yousafzai going to school, and they wanted her to stop telling people that girls should be allowed to go to school. Yousafzai, who is now 19 years old, was very badly hurt. It took her a long time to recover. But she never stopped telling people about how important it is for girls to get an education. For her courage and thoughtfulness, and her efforts to help girls around the world get an education, Canada has made her an “honourary citizen.” That means, Yousafzai is now Pakistani, but also Canadian. She is just the sixth person in Canada’s history to be awarded that honour.

In her thank-you speech in Canada’s House of Commons, she had a message for Canadian children. “You don’t have to be as old as the very young Prime Minister Trudeau to be a leader,” she said. She said that when she was very young, she used to think she had to get older before she could make a difference. But she said she knows now that anyone, of any age, can stand up for what they believe is right and make a difference. She also asked Canada’s leaders to take a lead role in raising more money for the education of girls, especially in refugee camps. After her speech, the packed crowed of Canadian politicians gave her a standing ovation and then spontaneously began singing the national anthem, O Canada.

U.K. Gym Offers Group Napping Classes For Exhausted Clients In our increasingly fast-paced, technology-driven world, most adults do not get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Things are even worse for those with young children. A recent study revealed that 86% of parents in the United Kingdom complain of fatigue and about 26% get less than 5 hours of sleep every night. To provide exhausted patrons a little relief from their hectic schedules, David Lloyd Clubs, a chain of gyms and fitness centers in Europe, has introduced a napercise class! As the name suggests, the hour-long group class, described as a way to "reinvigorate the mind, improve moods, and even burn the odd calorie," does not involve any hard-core exercise May 2017

Emmanuel Macron Is France's Youngest Leader Since Napoleon Bonaparte

On May 7, 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron became France’s youngest leader since 35-yearold Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor in 1804. The former economy minister is also the first president in modern French history who does not belong to the country’s two mainstream political parties — the conservative Republicans and the left-wing Socialists. Macron, who quit the government in 2016 to form Centrist party “En Marche!” (“On the Move”), identifies himself as a radical outsider and promises to overhaul the country’s “failing” political system and revive the shrinking economy.

Guess What? Your Brain May Have 100 Times More Computing Power Than You Thought

Given that scientists have been studying the human body for thousands of years, one would think that they have uncovered all there is to know. It turns out that is not the case. The latest surprising news comes from a team of researchers from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), who have discovered that our brains might be ten times more active and possess 100 times more computing power than previously believed. As you may be aware, the nerve cells, or neurons, 11 in our brains comprise three main parts-the cell bodies, or somas, branch-like structures called dendrites, and long slender projections called axons. Previously, scientists had believed that only the soma was actively involved in generating electric pulses or “spikes” which help create and store memories. They believed that dendrites merely transmitted the impulses from other neurons to the soma, while axons carried the impulses away from the soma. Turns out that is not the case, at least as far as dendrites are concerned.

Lungs Don't Just Help Us Breathe — They Produce Blood Too In your biology class, you may have learned that lungs help us breathe while bone marrow, found in flat bones such as the hip bone, produces red and white blood cells through a process called hematopoiesis. Now, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) researchers have discovered that in addition to being a crucial part of our respiratory system, lungs also play a major role in the production and storage of blood cells. Like many medical breakthroughs, the scientists stumbled upon this discovery by accident. The team, led by Professor Mark R. Looney, was trying to observe how platelets (cells that form clots to stop bleeding) circulating in the lungs interact with the immune system in mice. To trace the cells’ path, the rodents had been genetically modified so that the platelets appeared a glowing green. May 2017

12

May 31 is World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The World Health Organization (WHO) first organized this day in 1987. This annual global event reminds the public about the dangers of tobacco use. The WHO hopes the event will encourage young people not to pick up smoking. The long-term goal of the event is to reduce the number of deaths from tobacco use. Each year a new global theme is introduced. In 2006, the theme was "Tobacco: Deadly in any Form or Disguise". The theme in 2009 was "Tobacco Health Warnings". The emphasis that year was on the effectiveness of picture warnings on cigarette packages. The WHO believes that tobacco companies should not be allowed to advertise. Smoking bans haven't always been in place. There was a time when people could smoke freely in public places, including airplane cabins. These days, many countries do not allow tobacco use in public places such as restaurants and shopping malls. Smoking on patios and sidewalks is even frowned upon. If you have minors as passengers, it may even be illegal to smoke in your own car.

Comprehension Answer the following questions: 1. What does WHO stand for? 2. What is the WHO's goal of WNTD? 3. What was emphasized on WNTD in 2009? 4. What does the WHO want to ban tobacco companies from doing? 5. How has smoking in public places changes over the years? 13

Richard Gurley Drew Inventor of Scotch Tape

Richard G. Drew was born on 22nd June 1899 in Minnesota, USA.

Little is known of his early life other than the fact he played the banjo and drove a tractor!

26

He studied Mechanical Engineering for one year at the University of Minnesota and followed this with a correspondence course in Machine Design. The company made sandpaper and he began working for them as a technician.

At the age of 22, he applied for a job at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company.

May 2017

When testing sandpaper samples at an auto body shop he noticed that the painters were struggling to use their plaster tape. GREAT MINDS

Richard came up with an alternative but repeated trials of his new product were unsuccessful. However, undeterred, he continued with his mission and made the necessary changes.

The resulting paper-backed, pressuresensitive tape (Scotch masking tape) hit the market in 1925 and was an instant success.

27

May 2017

He followed this with a second invention, transparent Scotch brand cellulose tape, which was launched in 1930. This is known as sellotape in the UK. The success of the tapes allowed Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (widely known as 3M) to redefine itself as a major research and development company.

28

May 2017

Richard climbed up the ranks of 3M and, in 1943, established their Products Fabrication Laboratory (pro-fab lab). The lab consisted of a team of like-minded individuals and under Richard’'s leadership they invented a host of new innovative products.

These inventions included reflective sheeting to improve the visibility of road signs and breathable face masks.

By the time Richard retired from 3M, 30 patents carried his name as inventor or coSome members of 3M’'s senior inventor. What Is Bedwetting?

Bedwetting is when kids who are old enough to control their bladder pee at night during sleep. It's a common problem in kids, especially those under 6 years old.

Why Does Bedwetting Happen?

Doctors don't know for sure what causes bedwetting or why it stops. But it's often a natural part of development, and kids usually grow out of it. It's most common in young kids, but can last into the teen years. Most of the time, bedwetting is not a sign of any deeper medical or emotional issues.

36

Bedwetting often runs in families: many kids who wet the bed have a relative who did too. If both parents wet the bed when they were young, it's very likely that their child will.

How Can We Cope With Bedwetting? Bedwetting is an issue that millions of families face every night, and can be very stressful. Kids can feel embarrassed and guilty about wetting the bed and anxious about spending the night at a friend's house or at camp.

Bedwetting 37

May 2017

Bedwetting usually goes away on its own, but may last for a while. It can be embarrassing and uncomfortable for your child, so it's important to provide emotional support until it stops. Remember that bedwetting is a normal part of growing up and that it's not going to last forever. Try to drink more fluids during the daytime hours and less at night (and avoid caffeine-containing drinks). 38

Remember to go to the bathroom one final time before bedtime.

When your child wakes with wet sheets, don't yell or punish. Have your child help you change the sheets. Explain that this isn't punishment, but it is part of the process.

Offer praise when your child has a dry night. May 2017

Reading for Comprehension

Following Directions Read the directions carefully. Then number the steps below in the correct order

You can make a tornado in the safety of your own home. Take two plastic bottles with screw-on caps. Glue the caps together so the tops are backto-back. Ask a parent to help you make a hole through the glued bottle caps using a large nail. Fill one bottle about three-quarters full with water. Add food coloring and even some glitter so the tornado will be easy to see. Screw the double cap onto the bottle with water in it. Screw on the empty bottle at the top. Turn the two bottles upside down. Use both hands to hold the bottom bottle firmly. Use your wrists to turn the bottles as if you were drawing circles in the air. The water inside the bottles will start to swirl. You should see a tornado-like funnel form in the water.

RAMADAN Ramadan is a very special time of year for the more than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world. It is a time of fasting, prayer, dovotion to Allah (God), and selfsacrifice.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. Muslim holidays follow the lunar calendar. In the lunar calendar, each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. There are twelve months in the lunar calendar and each month is either 29 or 30 days. The lunar calendar is eleven days shorter than the solar calendar, so Ramadan does not always occur at the same time each year.

50

The Fast of Ramadan lasts the entire month. During this time, Muslims fast from just before sunsrise to sunset every day. They eat small meals in the early morning before the sun comes up and do not eat again until evening after the sun has gone down. Fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing an understanding for those poor people in the world who do not have much food to eat. It is also a way to learn to be very thankful for everything God provides. The daily evening meal to break the fast is known as Iftar. Iftar usually begins with dates and sweet drinks (or water), which provide quick energy after a long day of fasting. Following the Iftar, Muslims often go out visiting family and friends.

May 2017

During Ramadan, Muslims go to the mosque and spend hours praying and reading Quran. The holiest night of Ramadan is the Laylat-al-Qadr, or the Night of Power. This celebration commmemorates the night when Muhammad (PBUH) the Prophet first received the Holy Quran from Allah. The Quran does not mention the exact night that this took place, but most Muslims believe it falls on an odd-numbered night during the last ten days of Ramadan (23rd, 25th, or 27th).

The month of Ramadan ends with a festival called the Eid-al-Fitr or the Feast of Breaking the Fast. It is one of the most important celebrations in the Muslims faith. People dress in their finest clothes and decorate their homes with lights and ornaments. Family and friends gather together to pray, exchange gifts, and eat large meals. A sense of charity and doing good deeds is also a very important part of these celebrations. Mulsims are expected to share their blessings and good fortunes by feeding poor and making donations to their mosques. 51

Magnet Myths Magnets are objects that create an area of magnetic force called a magnetic field. These fields by themselves are invisible to the human eye. Magnets only attract certain types of metals, such as iron, cobalt, and nickel.

Attracted to: Iron Cobalt Nickel

NOT attracted to: Plastic Gold Aluminium Glass

Copper Silver Magnesium

54

Magnets have a north pole and a south pole. If the same pole of two magnets are put close to each other they will repel or push away. If different poles are close to each other they will be attracted to each other and pull together. Magnetic objects must be inside the magnetic field to respond, which is why you may have to move a magnet closer for it to have an effect.

Unlike poles Attract

Unlike poles Repel May 2017

Can a magnet damage electronics? Yes, powerful magnets are actually used to wipe information from computer hard drives. Most types of electronic equipment are made with tiny magnets, and those can be affected by another magnet close by. However, most household magnets, such as fridge magnets, are not strong enough to damage electronics.

Can a magnet wipe information from a CD? No. The information on a CD is burned onto the CD with a laser. A magnet won’t affect the information on a CD.

Do magnets have healing powers?

Can you make a metal magnetic by rubbing a magnet on it? To make a metal magnetic, you must do something to manipulate the magnetic domains of the metal so that they point in the same direction. This happens when you rub a pin on a magnet - the pin’s magnetic domains will align because they’ve been exposed to the magnet’s magnetic field. You can also do this by placing a piece of metal in a strong magnetic field in a northsouth direction or passing an electrical current through it.

Doctors and scientists have been studying the healing effects of magnets for a long time. But we’re still not quite sure of how powerful a magnet’s healing capabilities are. There are many theories to explain why magnets MIGHT be good for your body. For example, some say that the iron found in hemoglobin in your blood can be affected by magnets. That is why many people wear magnetic bracelets or necklaces to help improve blood circulation. Some say that magnets can also change the structure of nearby cells. This could mean that magnets might be able to heal pain or illnesses. Magnets are used as a part of many different medical devices. For example, an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses magnetic fields to see the organs in our bodies.
