Humpback Calves "Whisper" To Their Moms To Avoid Predators

10

Every winter, hundreds of humpback whales migrate long distances from their high latitude feeding grounds in the Arctic and Antarctic to warmer tropical regions to breed and give birth. The newborn calves, which consume over 52 gallons of milk on a daily basis, have only a few months to pack on the body fat needed to survive the long trek back to cooler waters in summer. How the babies signal hunger and avoid predators during these formative months has always been a mystery to scientists. “We know next to nothing about the early life stages of whales in the wild, but they are crucial for the calves’ survival during the long migration to their feeding grounds,” says study lead author Simone Videsen of the University of Aarhus, Denmark. "These early life stages of wild whales are so elusive because they're an aquatic animal. We can't follow them around all the time to see what they're doing." To investigate, the team, which included scientists from Western Australia's Murdoch University, tracked eight calves and two mothers in the Exmouth Gulf using special recorders that captured their movement and ambient sounds. The temporary tags, stuck onto the babies’ skin using suction cups, fell off within a day, and were therefore, not harmful to their health. Their findings published in the journal Functional Ecology on April 25, revealed that instead of bawling loudly like their human counterparts, humpback calves

signal their hunger by gently nudging their mothers or uttering soft grunts and squeaks. The moms acknowledge the requests by responding with quiet calls. This is very different from the normally loud and eerie adult whale songs which reverberate across the ocean. The team believes these quiet conversations help whale mothers keep track of their young in murky waters without being overheard by dangerous eavesdroppers. According to Videsen, “Potential predators such as killer whales could listen to their conversations and use that as a cue to locate the calf and predate on it.”

Theresa May’s Majority Becomes A Minority The British Prime Minister may be regretting her decision to call an early election. Theresa May and her political party, the Conservative Party, were the leaders in the UK (United Kingdom). They had a “majority” government. (In other words, they had more “seats” or representatives in the House of Commons than all of the other political parties, combined.) That’s important, because having a majority means that you can really get things done and you won’t be voted down by the other parties May hoped that by holding an election, she could expand her majority even more. However, things didn’t go as she planned. The voters did vote to keep her as Prime Minister but instead of a majority, she now has a minority. In other words, she lost “seats” in the House of Commons. May didn’t have to call an election. She could have waited until 2020. However, the Conservatives were riding a wave of popularity so the timing seemed good.

Some people think that May will try to work with another, smaller, political party to create an alliance. In that way, with two parties working together, they would have more seats. The election was held on June 8. There are 650 seats in Great Britian’s House of Commons; 326 seats are needed for a majority. In the election, May’s Conservatives got 318 seats; the Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, came second with 262 seats and in third place was the SNP led by Nicola Sturgeon with 35 seats. There were other parties, who won fewer seats.

President Trump Withdraws The US From The Paris Climate Agreement

President Donald Trump fulfilled yet another campaign promise by announcing that the US was withdrawing from the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The goal of the historic pledge signed by 195 countries is to curb the use of fossil fuels to ensure that average global temperatures do not increase more than 2°C (3.6°F) above pre-industrial levels. Environmentalists believe this is a critical threshold above which the planet could experience irreversible impacts, such as an unprecedented rise in sea levels and widespread plant and animal extinction. The decision, though widely anticipated, was met with much dismay by most Americans and people worldwide. However, President Trump’s administration has always maintained that the environmental regulations imposed by the treaty cost American jobs and had a negative impact on consumers. They also believe it is “unfair” since other leading polluters like India and China are not required to cut back harmful emissions until 2030. The President reaffirmed this belief on Tuesday, saying, “The United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord but begin negotiations to re-enter either the Paris accord or an entirely new transaction on

terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers.” According to Climate Central, an independent organization of leading scientists and journalists that investigates and reports on climate change, America can exit the Paris agreement in one of three ways. The easiest option, of course, is to ignore the carbon reduction plan altogether and continue the use of fossil fuels with no regard to the environment. The US can also formally withdraw from the treaty. However, according to the rules stipulated in the Paris accord, this requires a three-year wait, which means that the country would be obliged to fulfill its commitments until November 2020. The most drastic choice involves withdrawing from the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which would automatically indicate that the US is abandoning the Paris accord as well. This option will also require a year to execute.

Scientists Identify New Organ Scientists have identified a new organ in the human body. It’s called the mesentery (pronounced mess’-entair-ee). An organ is a group of tissues that has a specific function in the body. Our bodies have 79 organs, including the heart, lungs, brain, skin and stomach. The mesentery is made of fatty tissue and is shaped a bit like a fan. It is attached to the back wall of the abdomen and it helps to support the intestines and hold them in place. The mesentery also carries blood and lymphatic fluid between the intestines and the rest of the body. It’s hard to see the entire mesentery at one time because it is partly hidden by the intestines. Scientists used to think it was just separate ribbons of tissue. Late last year, a group of researchers from the University of Limerick in Ireland showed that the mesentery is one continuous piece of tissue that works as an organ.

Scientists think the mesentery may have several purposes in the body, such as helping with digestion, circulation and fighting disease. Dr. J. Calvin Coffey was one of the scientists who helped to show that the mesentery is an organ. He said he hopes scientists will now be able to learn more about what it does. Eventually, he said, understanding the mesentery could help doctors find new ways to treat diseases like diabetes or cancer. June 2017

The birth flower for June is the rose.

16

The AngloSaxons called June “sera monath” (dry month).

In any year, no month begins on the same day of the week as June.

Lily of the Valley is the traditional flower for this month, a symbol of sweetness.

June is celebrated as National Smile Month in the UK and National Oceans Month in the USA.

The name of the sixth month of the year comes from the Latin Iunius, meaning “sacred to Juno”, the Roman goddess. U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot by an assassin on June 5, 1968 and he died the following day. June 2017

The birthstones for June are the pearl, alexandrite, and moonstone.

June has the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Ford Motor Company was founded on June 16, 1903.

Istanbul has previously been known as both Constantinople and Byzantium. It is the most populous city in Turkey and is situated in both Europe and Asia, straddling the Bosphorus strait. It is located in north-western Turkey and is further divided by the Golden Horn, a natural harbour.

It takes approximately 3 hours and 17 minutes to fly from Kuwait to Istanbul. 18

Around a third of the city’s population lives on the Asian side.

Most flights land at Atatürk Airport, 20km west of the city centre. The second airport, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, is situated in the Anatolian side of the city.

There are many public transport options in Istanbul including metro, trains, trams, taxis, buses and ferries. But be warned, the system is complicated and you may need to purchase tokens in advance.

There are 39 districts in Istanbul, divided between the European and Asian sides.

June 2017

Situated on the historic Silk Road it is ideal for both rail and sea transportation.

Istanbul was named European Capital of Culture in 2005 and is the world’s fifth most popular tourist destination.

The city has one of the fastest growing Metropolitan economies in the world.

It has bid for the Summer Olympics five times in twenty years but has yet to be successful.

19

The city’s climate can be unpredictable, mainly because of its coastline to two different bodies of water. There is often a significant difference between the temperatures in the north and the south.

The flag of Turkey is a red flag with a white crescent and star. Distance Between Kuwait & Istanbul: 1317 miles (2119 km)

The centre of Istanbul is dominated by the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque around Sultanahmet Square

The Hagia Sophia was constructed in 537 AD and remained the world’s largest cathedral for almost a thousand years. Meaning ‘Holy Wisdom’ it was originally a Greek Orthodox Christian church. It later became an imperial mosque and is now a museum. Three of its minarets were built from white limestone and sandstone, the fourth from red brick.

Not far from the Blue Mosque is the Basilica Cistern. Built in the 6th century, it is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city. It is supported by 336 marble columns and houses two carvings of the Greek guardian, Madusa.

The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) was constructed between 1609 and 1616. It has five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes. It still functions as a mosque today with a capacity of 10,000 worshippers. 20

North of the city is Galata, crowned by Galata Tower, a medieval stone tower with a cone shaped cap. This nine-story tower was built in 1348. You can climb this stone tower for panoramic views of the city. Topkapı Palace was once a royal residence but is now a museum. It houses important Muslim relics including Muhammed’s cloak and sword. Construction of the palace began in 1459 and consists of four main courtyards, mosques, a hospital, bakeries and a mint.

From Galata Tower, take a stroll along Istiklal Avenue, the city’s main shopping destination. This leads to Taksim Square.

North of Taksim Square you’ll find the Military Museum, dedicated to one thousand years of Turkish military history.

Across the Bosphorus in the Asian side, you will find Maiden’s Tower. Also known as Leander’s Tower, it’s situated on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait.

For a relaxing stroll, head to Gulhane Park and enjoy a view of the Bosphorus. Before leaving Istanbul you must try some of their wonderful street food. Vendors are found all around the city. Try ‘simit’, Turkey’s alternative to the American bagel, or ‘lahmacun’ (Turkish pizza). 21

Beavers are known for building dams and canals. They also build their houses which are called lodges.

The beaver is a large, mostly nocturnal, semi-aquatic rodent.

Lodges are built by erecting vertical poles then arranging a crisscross of horizontally placed branches. Any gaps are filled in with weeds and mud. Clever!

There are two species – the North American and Eurasian beaver.

22

June 2017

They live in colonies and build dams to protect against predators. They also use the resulting pools of still, deep water to float food and building materials.

The world’s largest beaver dam was 850 metres deep! Apparently, multiple generations of beavers had been working on the dam since the 1970s.

Building dams is also a form of temperature control, ensuring the pool behind it doesn’t freeze all the way down during winter.

They have many predators including wolves, foxes, owls, otters, weasels, hawks and eagles.

Sadly, the North American beaver is in decline due to extensive hunting for fur. Their glands are also used for medicine and perfume.

They have powerful front teeth to cut trees and other plants.

23

They are herbivores and eat wood, pondweed and water lilies.

They have webbed hind-feet and a broad, scaly tail. June 2017

They have poor eyesight but a good sense of hearing, smell and touch.

A beaver’s teeth grow continuously so they won’t be worn down by chewing on wood.

A beaver can live up to 24 years in the wild.

24

If startled, a beaver will dive rapidly, slapping the water with its tail. This is audible over long distances and acts as a warning to other beavers.

June 2017

Beavers are very good swimmers but are quite slow on ground. They can remain under water for as long as 15 minutes.

They also use their tail for balance on dry land, allowing them to sit upright or to balance when carrying heavy materials. years.

They can close their nose and ear valves to keep water out when submerged. Also, a third, transparent set of eyelids acts as goggles.

The beaver is the national animal of Canada. It even features on the Canadian five-cent piece.

Even more amazing is that their lips close behind their teeth so they can carry things underwater without drowning! 25

Willis Carrier

Inventor of Modern Air Conditioning Willis Carrier was born in New York on 26th November 1876.

He studied at Cornell University, receiving an engineering degree in 1901. 26

In the same year, he began working at Buffalo Forge Company, a firm manufacturing blacksmith’s tools.

The following year, in response to a problem experienced at a publishing company in Brooklyn, he submitted drawings for what was to become the world’s first modern air conditioning system.

June 2017

GREAT MINDS

His system included humidity control, which was lacking in previous designs.

After a period of refinement and improvement, Willis was granted a US patent in 1906 for ‘Apparatus for Treating Air’.

His invention was the world’s first spray-type air conditioning unit designed to humidify or dehumidify air. It could heat water and cool water depending on its required function. Willis also discovered the ‘law of constant dew-point depression’ and, as a result, designed an automatic control system. He was granted a US patent for this in February 1914. June 2017

27

On 3rd December 1911, Willis presented his ‘Rational Psychrometric Formulae’ at the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This is arguably the most significant document ever prepared in relation to air conditioning. It became known as the ‘Magna Carta of Psychrometrics’.

In 1914, Willis, along with seven other young engineers, pooled together with life savings and formed the Carrier Engineering Corporation in New York.

28

As a result of the Wall Street Crash in 1929, the company experienced financial difficulties and merged with two other companies to form the Carrier Corporation. Willis was Chairman of the Board and the company became one of the largest employers in Central New York.

The Carrier Corporation remains a world leader in both commercial and residential air conditioning.

June 2017

In 1998, Willis was named one of TIME Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century’.

In 2007, the company employed 45,000 people and recorded sales in excess of $15 billion. Willis Carrier was married three times. His first wife was Claire Seymour; his second Jennie Martin; and his third Elizabeth Wise. He never fathered any children. He died on 7th October 1950 in New York. He will be remembered as the ‘father of airconditioning’ and for designing a system which improves the way we live, work and play.

Date fruits have grown in the Middle East and North Africa for over 7000 years.

In total, there are more than 1000 different types of known date fruits. The UAE in particular, has more than 200 different types of dates and around 44 million palm trees!

30

When ripe, dates range in colour from bright red to bright yellow, depending on the variety.

The name ‘date’ is taken from the Greek word for finger (dáktulos) because of the fruit’s elongated shape.

Palm trees are the oldest cultivated trees in recorded history. It takes between 4 and 8 years before they bear fruit.

Dates ripen in four stages: unripe (kimri), crunchy (khlal), soft (rubab) and sundried (tamr).

June 2017

Correctly stored, dates can last for several years.

According to Islamic tradition, the date tree is the tree of life in the Garden of Eden.

Dates are often used to break fast during the Holy month of Ramadan. This is because they are easy to digest and provide the body with energy.

They produce one crop per year. A healthy tree will bear several clusters of fruit. A large cluster may weigh as much as 40 pounds!

Palm trees usually grow to a height of about 40ft (12 metres).

Dates are delicious when eaten fresh. Sometimes they are pitted and stuffed with fillings such as pecans, marzipan or cream cheese. They can also be glazed with syrup or chopped and used in desserts, cakes or breads.

Traditionally, people took dates to eat when crossing deserts or taking long boat trips.

The stones from dates are used for making makeup and soap.

The trees themselves are also useful. Leaves can be used to make carpets, trays and baskets. The trunk can be used to make furniture. Fiber from the tree is good for making ropes and for filling mattresses and pillows.

ANSWERS:1.The Greek word for ‘finger’, 2.One, 3.Making carpets, trays and baskets, 4.False, 5.Over 1000, 6.The tree of life in the Garden of Eden, 7.The high sugar content can cause tooth decay, 8.40 ft (12 metres), 9.Soap, 10.4

32

June 2017

Dates are very rich in potassium and a good source of iron and vitamin B12. Unusually for a fruit, they do not contain any vitamin C, but they do have a high fiber content. In addition, they are highly calorific.

Their high sugar content might contribute to tooth decay so it’s important to brush your teeth after eating dates.

They are usually categorized in three ways, depending on their moisture content: soft dates, semi-soft dates and dry dates.

QUESTIONS 1. Where is the name ‘date’ taken from? 2. How many crops does a palm tree produce each year? 3. What are leaves from a palm tree used for? 4. Dates are high in vitamin C – true or false? 5. How many different types of dates are there? 6. What is the date tree according to Islamic tradition? 7. Why is it important to brush your teeth after eating dates? 8. How high do palm trees usually grow? 9. Stones from dates are used to make make-up and what else? 10. Dates ripen in how many stages? Funny Girl

It was the day Winnie's seed of frustration with her parents was planted, a seed that grew and grew until it felt like it was as big as a tree itself.

Smelly sweat What is Sweat?

Our bodies have their own airconditioning system. It's called sweating. Sweat flows out through the skin to cool us down if our body temperature is getting higher than the usual 37ยบ Celsius.

36

Sweating and body odor are facts of life for most people. Heavy perspiration and body odor can happen when you exercise, when you're too warm, or when you're nervous, anxious or under stress.

Sweat is also known as perspiration. We sweat (perspire) to cool our skin and release heat from our body when the hypothalamus (say hippo-thal-a-mus), (the part of the brain that looks after body temperature) sends messages to our body to start sweating. This could be in hot weather or after hard exercise. If you have a fever it's because your body is fighting an infection and having a higher body temperature is one of the ways the body does this. While your body is pushing up your temperature you will not sweat, but when your body needs to cool down again you can become very sweaty. You may sweat more as adrenaline (the fight or flight hormone) speeds up your heart rate. June 2017

Where does it come from?

There are two types of sweat glands. The eccrine glands (say ek-reen) are found all over the body in the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis). There are over 2 million of them. There are lots of them on the palms of our hands, the soles of our feet, our armpits and on our scalp.

CLINIC

Boushahri_clinic

Each gland has its own exit to the skin's surface. This is called a pore. If you lick your arm you can taste your sweat. It tastes salty. Sweat from eccrine glands is made out of water, a little bit of salt and tiny amounts of some other chemicals. The apocrine sweat glands (say ap-oh-kreen) are found in armpits and in the genital and anal area (your 'private' bits). The exit of these glands is into a hair follicle – they do not have their own pore. These glands start working when you reach puberty. They make a thick, oily fluid different to the sweat on other parts of your body.

How do you know if you're smelly?

Your nose very quickly gets used to smells around it, so you don't notice your own body smell, but if you are a nearly teen and stick your nose under your arm you might notice a smell. Usually this smell is not as strong or as bad as most people fear it is if you wash regularly and change your clothes. However – your feet!!! You can notice when your feet smell bad. Have you taken a shower lately?Sometimes if people tell you that you smell bad – have BO – they might be being unkind rather than truthful. Sometimes the things that people use to hide their body smell have a much stronger and more unpleasant smell than their body actually has.

Why sweat smells 38

Well actually sweat from the eccrine glands does not have a smell. Sweat from apocrine glands does have a smell, but it is usually only a very slight smell. However, our bodies have bacteria (germs) living on skin and clothes. These bacteria use sweat to grow. A lot of body smell (body odour or BO) comes from the bacteria feeding on the oils in sweat under the arms or groin. This sweat gets onto the clothes we wear and if we don't wash and change underclothes then the smell gets stronger! But the worst smell can be from our feet! Feet make a lot of sweat and bacteria can get a really good feed if they hang out inside your socks and shoes. (If your feet are damp then fungi can grow and you could get tinea, which is a fungus.) So wash your feet well and make sure that you dry between your toes. A dry facewasher is handy because June 2017

it can get into the spaces between your toes more easily than a towel. (Don't use the same one that you use on your face though!) Spicy foods and garlic can change the smell of sweat too. Everyone has their own personal smell - that's how dogs can track people after sniffing a piece of their clothing.

What you can do

If you can, wash your body every day and change your underwear every day. Air your shoes, especially sneakers or sports shoes when you take them off. Leave them overnight in the laundry or even outside if you have a covered area where you can safely leave them. If you wear a school uniform hang it up when you take it off. Hang it in a place where it can get a passing breeze if possible. using antiperspirantKids who have not yet reached puberty do not need antiperspirants and deodorants because their sweat is not smelly. Clean clothes are the most important way to smell nice. If you are a 'nearly teen', deodorants, antiperspirants and other smell nice products work best if your skin is clean. Be aware that some perfumes and sprays can make some people feel unwell even though they are not the ones wearing them. Clean your teeth twice a day. Your mouth doesn't sweat but bacteria can make your breath smell bad. If your skin gets itchy when you use soap or shower gel,or you have an allergic reaction to soap, use sorbolene cream instead.

The Floating Egg Materials: lraw

Thinking and Predicting Question: lWhich lWill

is more buoyant: saltwater or freshwater? the amount of salt added to water affect its buoyancy?

What to do: lFill

40

all 3 glasses ž full with water. lPlace a raw egg in glass #1 and observe. (It will sink.) lPut several tablespoons of salt in glass #2. (Amount depends on the size of the glass) Stir. lNow place the egg in glass #2 and observe. (Since you have lots of salt, it should float. If not, add more salt.) lNow put half as much salt in glass #3 as you did in glass #2. Place the egg in glass #3 and observe. (The egg should float, but not as high.) lExperiment with the amount of salt. Through trial and error, you may be able to get the egg to suspend itself in the middle of the liquid.

Why this happens: Salt changes the density of the water, therefore causing objects to be more buoyant.

Vocabulary: buoyancy – the ability of an object to float in water

Animal Cell Cells are the Starting Point. All living organisms on Earth are divided into cells. The main concept of cell theory is that cells are the basic structural unit for all organisms. Cells are small compartments that hold the biological equipment necessary to keep an organism alive and successful. Living things may be single-celled or they may be very complex such as a human being.

World Blood Donor Day June 14 World Blood Donor Day raises awareness for the need for blood and blood products (plasma, red cells and platelets) around the world. Donated blood and blood products make surgeries possible, lessen the gravity of humanitarian and natural disasters, and can help just about anyone in need. Blood and its products are collected from donors who are willing to roll up their sleeves to donate approximately one-fifth of their blood. So, World Blood Donor Day is just as much a celebration of blood as it is of blood donors who give their life-saving gift to help unknown people in need. The event began in 2004 and has been growing in popularity ever since. World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14th, a date chose as it is the birthday of Nobel Prize winning scientist Karl Landsteiner who discovered the ABO blood group system.
