Japanese Town Seeks Help From Dogs To Sniff Out Stomach Cancer

10

While Japan is known to have higher than average rates of stomach cancer, the residents of the town of Kaneyama in Yamagata Prefecture appear to be particularly susceptible to the gastric ailment. After a recent report revealed that the municipality had one of the highest stomach cancer fatality rates out of the nation’s 344 “secondary medical districts,” the town officials decided to get its 6,000 residents tested. However, the frozen urine samples submitted to the Nippon Medical School Chiba Hokusoh Hospital in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, are not undergoing conventional diagnostic tests. Instead, Professor Masao Miyashita and his team are using them in a trial to determine if specially trained cancersniffing dogs can accurately detect the disease. Though the study is still in its early stages, Miyashita is thrilled with the results saying, “In our research so far, cancer detection dogs have been able to find [signs of] cancer with an accuracy of nearly 100 percent." The animal’s ability to sniff out the disease can be attributed to the 300 trillion sensors in its nose. In contrast, humans only have 6 million sensors. Pooches also have a second smell receptor that we do not possess. Located at the bottom of their nasal passage, the vomeronasal, or Jacobson's, organ, is powerful enough to smell generally undetectable odors. Claire Guest, the founder and CEO of Medical Detection Dogs, says, “They [dogs] can detect parts per trillion — that’s the equivalent of one drop of blood in two Olympic-sized swimming pools.” Researchers have known about the animals’ superior sensory skills for decades. However, their ability to detect cancer in humans came to light in 1989, after a dog sniffed out early stage malignant melanoma from a mole on a patient’s leg at King’s College in London. Since then, scientists from France to California to Italy have conducted studies to test the canine’s prowess at identifying cancer chemicals. One of the biggest studies was undertaken by Medical Detection Dogs in 2016. For the trial, cancer-sniffing dogs were exposed to several batches of evenly placed urine

samples. Each contained one belonging to a cancer patient. To ensure the dogs were sniffing out cancer and not something else, like old age, each group included a urine sample from a similarly-aged candidate who was experiencing cancerlike symptoms but did not have the disease. Sure enough, the dogs were able to identify the cancer sufferer each time. Since then, the nonprofit organization has trained pooches to detect all kinds of cancers, from prostrate to breast. They are now conducting trials to see if the animals can help diagnose Parkinson’s disease early. While most dogs can be trained for the task, researchers say the best candidates are pooches that are precise, methodical, quiet, and perhaps even a little shy. The training process is similar to how canines are taught to learn any trick — by rewarding them with treats! However, it takes much longer because the dogs have to learn to isolate the “cancer scent” from the thousands of organic compounds in the human body. Researchers begin by exposing the canines to urine samples from people with cancer, people with other ailments, and patients with no health issues. Once the dogs are able to identify accurately cancer, they are further trained to detect particular kinds of cancer. Successful as they may be, experts think dogs are unlikely to replace conventional diagnostic tests. For one, it takes about seven years and costs as much as $45,000 USD to train a single dog. Klaus Hackner, a researcher and physician who studies dogs detecting cancer in breath samples at Krems University in Austria, is also not convinced pooches can be relied upon alone. Patients, therefore, have to undergo further tests to confirm if they have the disease. Guest acknowledges that dogs will always be used in conjunction with traditional tests. However, the researcher is still a big proponent of training the animals given that they can sniff out the disease long before the symptoms appear. And she should know — after all it was her dog Tangle’s superior sniffing skills that led to the early discovery of a deep-rooted cancer tumor insider her breast tissue in 2009. July 2017

Gordon Ramsay says his kids won't get his $140 million fortune

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has revealed he won’t leave his massive fortune to his children — as he fears it could “ruin them.” The TV star, who has Matilda, 15, Jack and Holly, 17, and Megan, 18, with wife Tana, 42, joins a number of mega-rich dads including Bill Gates and Simon Cowell who have chosen not to leave their wealth to their offspring. Speaking to the Telegraph, Gordon, who according to reports has an estimated net worth of roughly $140 million, said his children will have to make their own

way in life. “It’s definitely not going to them, and that’s not in a mean way; it’s to not spoil them,” he said. “The only thing I’ve agreed with Tana is that they get a 25 percent deposit on a flat, but not the whole flat.” He added: “I’ve never been really turned on about the money. That’s not my number one objective and that’s reflected in the way the kids are brought up.” Meanwhile, he added his children don’t sit with them in first class on family holidays as they “haven’t worked hard enough” to afford it yet.

‘Snark’ wins children’s book award Dunedin author and illustrator David Elliot has won the top prize at this year New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Elliot’s book Snark is based around two Lewis Carroll poems. It has been named the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year. Elliot turned Carroll’s poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark into a pictorial expedition diary. It impressed the judges for its clear wit, outstanding illustrations and twists on the original material. Elliot received prize money totalling $15,000. July 2017

The walrus is a large marine mammal.

The scientific name for a walrus is Odobenus Rosmarus which is Latin for ‘tooth walking sea-horse’. 22

They live in shallow waters and are easily recognised by their large tusks and whiskers. They have 450 whiskers in total. These are called vibrissae.

Their tusks never stop growing! They use them to pull themselves out of the water.

A male tusk can grow up to 1 metre long! July 2017

Walruses are grey or brown in colour but they develop a pinkish hue as they age.

They have thick skin and a layer of blubber. This keeps them warm in icy waters. There are three sub-species of walrus. Their name also identifies their habitat. The Atlantic walrus lives in the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific walrus lives in the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific walrus is the larger of the two. The lesser-known O.R. Laptevi walrus lives in the Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean.

23

Walruses are migrational and can travel up to 1,800 miles.

Durian is an unusual fruit with an equally unusual smell – it is said to smell like sweaty gym socks! Doesn’t sound very appetizing does it?!

In addition to its pungent odour it also has a spiky thorncovered shell. Despite these two disadvantages, the durian is a popular seasonal fruit.

The name has been derived from the Malay word 'duri' which means thorn.

It is a tropical fruit known as the ‘King of Fruits’ across South-East Asia. August 2017

Native to Malaysia and Indonesia it is now also grown in Thailand, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

Its flavour is often described as a combination of onion and custard! Well, that’s certainly different!

Thailand exports more durian than any other country.

It can vary in shape from round to oblong and can grow up to 30cm long.

31

The rind of a durian fruit is green and brown and the flesh is creamyyellow.

It also contains high amounts of copper and iron which are good for red blood cells. August 2017

The flesh is often used as flavouring in a variety of Southeast Asian dishes. It’s also a popular ingredient in ice-cream and milkshakes.

It is rich in fiber and a good source of vitamin C.

Durian fruit is also a rich source of potassium which helps to control our heart rate and blood pressure.

On the down side, one durian fruit can contain between 885 to 1,500 calories – not good for your waistline!

32

ANSWERS:1.Thailand, 2.King of Fruits, 3.Onion and custard, 4.May to October, 5.Stiff, 6.Thorn, 7.Sweaty gym socks!, 8.Oblong, 9.Green and brown, 10.False August 2017

A durian tree is recognized by its highly fragrant, oblong green leaves. They grow up to 50 metres in height and bear fruit after 4-5 years.

The fruitbearing season for a durian tree is from May to October.

When selecting a durian fruit, choose the lightest one of the pile. Those with big, fresh, solid stems are the best and the thorns should be stiff not brittle. Also, shake the fruit so you can hear it rattle. This means the seeds are moving inside which indicates the fruit is ripe.

Because of the awful smell, you should follow these tips: -Never leave a durian fruit in the car on a hot day -Do not leave a durian fruit uncovered in the fridge -Try not to burp after eating a durian fruit – you won’t be very popular!

33

QUESTIONS 1. Which country exports the most durian fruit? 2. What is it known as across South-East Asia? 3. The flavour is described as a combination of what? 4. When is the fruit bearing season of a durian tree? 5. When selecting a durian fruit, should the thorns be stiff or brittle? 6. What does the Malay word ‘duri’ mean? 7. but now that she’s escaped to try her luck on the streets, she has bigger problems than extra chores to contend with. Surviving would be hard enough, but after a run-in with one of the city’s Protectors, she’s marked by a curse that’s slowly working its way to her heart. There is a cure, but the cost is astronomical—and seems well out of her reach.

Fish!). Staying home is not an option, so they each get busy. Garcia builds a rocket ship that's snazzy and silver. Colette's shiny submarine is perfect for deep-sea dives. And they wish each other well on their travels.

There, There The Girl with the Ghost Machine by Lauren DeStefano

In this beautiful and poignant novel, acclaimed author Lauren DeStefano tells a story of love and loss, and what it means to say goodbye. When Emmaline Beaumont's father started building the ghost machine, she didn't expect it to bring her mother back from the dead. But by locking himself in the basement to toil away at his hopes, Monsieur Beaumont has become obsessed with the contraption and neglected the living, and Emmaline is tired of feeling forgotten.

Let's Pretend We Never Met by Melissa C. Walker

If it were up to Mattie Markham, there would be a law that said your family wasn’t allowed to move in the middle of the school year. After all, sixth grade is hard enough without wondering if you’ll be able to make new friends or worrying that the kids in Pennsylvania won’t like your North Carolina accent.

Do you ever feel like everything is terrible? Like nothing is ever right and you just want to hide under your pillow? Well Rabbit does, and he's not shy about sharing it. He whines, he complains, he moans, he grumps... until Bear has had enough and decides it's time for Rabbit to learn to appreciate what he has. Using nothing but the lowly common earthworm as an example, he teaches Rabbit a lesson about taking things for granted. Something the worm knows all about...

HAIR LOSS

Every day, you lose about 50 to 100 hairs. You've seen them. They swirl down the drain in the tub or get stuck on the back of your sweater. Or, worst of all, one might get in your mouth. Gross. Normally, when hair falls out, new hairs start forming in the same place as the old ones. But when someone has hair loss, the hairs may not grow back. Or they do grow, but there aren't enough of them to take the place of what's already fallen out. This often happens to men, who might start to go bald as they get older. 36

But anyone can have hair loss, even kids. The medical name for hair loss is alopecia. Baldness or hair loss is usually something only adults need to worry about. But sometimes teens lose their hair, too — and it may be a sign that something's going on. Hair loss during adolescence can mean a person may be sick or just not eating right. Some medicines or medical treatments (like chemotherapy) also cause hair loss. People can even lose their hair if they wear a hairstyle (like braids) that pulls on the hair for a long time. Losing hair can be stressful. Most of the time, hair loss during the teen years is temporary. With temporary hair loss, the hair usually grows back after the problem that causes it is corrected. July 2017

Hair Basics

Hair is made of a kind of protein called keratin. A single hair has a hair shaft (the part that shows), a root below the skin, and a follicle.

CLINIC

Boushahri_clinic

The follicle is the place the hair root grows from. At the lower end of the follicle is the hair bulb. This is where the hair's color pigment, or melanin, is produced. Most people lose about 50 to 100 head hairs a day. These hairs are replaced — they grow back in the same follicle on your head. This amount of hair loss is totally normal and no cause for worry. If you're losing more than that, though, something might be wrong. 37

If you have hair loss and don't know what's causing it, talk to your doctor. A doctor can determine why the hair is falling out and suggest a treatment that will correct the underlying problem, if necessary.

July 2017

What Can Doctors Do?

If you see a doctor about hair loss, he or she will ask questions about your health and family health (your medical history). The doctor will check your scalp, and might take hair samples and test for certain medical conditions that can cause hair loss. If medicine is causing your hair loss, ask the doctor if you can switch to a different medicine. If your hair loss is due to an endocrine condition, like diabetes or thyroid disease or female-pattern baldness, proper treatment and control of the underlying disorder is important to reduce or prevent hair loss.

38

If your doctor recommends it, a product like minoxidil can increase hair growth in male- and female-pattern baldness. Alopecia areata can be helped by treatment with corticosteroid creams or injections on the scalp. If your doctor thinks that nutritional deficiencies are causing your hair loss, he or she might refer you to a dietitian or other nutrition expert.

Taking Care of Your Hair

Eating a balanced, healthy diet is important for a lot of reasons. Healthy foods can really benefit your hair. If you're losing hair, some doctors recommend using baby shampoo, washing your hair no more than once a day, and lathering gently. Don't rub your hair too vigorously with a towel, either. Many hair experts suggest putting away the blow dryer and air drying your hair instead. If you can't live without your blow dryer, use it on a low-heat setting. Styling your hair while it's wet can cause it to stretch and break. So style your hair when it's dry or damp. Avoid teasing or back-combing your hair because they can cause damage. Finally, be careful when using chemicals — such as straighteners or color treatments. Don't get any kind of chemical treatment done too often.

THE EMOJI MOVIE The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-beforeseen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever. 58
