M y little girl delightedly said to me last week: “Muuuuuum, you know, it’s not long until Christmas!”.Asmuchas I love Christmas, those words hit home just how quickly this year has flown by. How the [bleep] can we be in the run-up to Christmas already?! But she is right. Because once the September school holidays are over and Term 4 kicks in, it’s time for that 12-week plummet towards December 24th (aka ‘collapse in a heap’ day). Despite the kids getting older, it doesn’t seem to get any less frenetic. Whether its childcare Christmas activities or a Year 12 graduation, it’s a busy busy time of year. In an effort to curb the crazy, I’m focusing on cherishing the new season. Because, let’s be honest, it truly is a beautiful time to live on the Sunshine Coast. Sooo, this issue we focus on everything spring! I was lucky enough to head to the beach for some gorgeous, nature-inspired play with the team from the new Habitat Montessori Early Learning centre opening in Peregian. It is so exciting to see this new service come to fruition, and it sooooo made me wish my kids were little again! Also celebrating spring we have a Babies Special! Local experts join us with their tips on baby dental care, early literacy and finding your baby village as a new mum. Plus we meet the super-cute new addition to Sunshine Coast Lightning when we chat with player Karla Pretorius about her gorgeous little baby girl, motherhood and sport. Talking of sport, we also have a round up of the fantastic range of sports and extra-curricular activities for kids on the Coast. From football to dance, there’s something to coax every kid to get active thisHappyspring.spring!

RISE & SHINE AIMS TO for Australia’s sickest kids

Small school making A BIG DIFFERENCE

My Independent School (MIS) in Beerwah is celebrating its successes, nurturing its latest cohort of young people through a positive schooling experience thanks to its unique, individualised learning program.

RISE & KINDERGARTENSHINE IN MAROOCHY RIVER IS WORKING TOWARDS A SUBSTANTIAL $20,000 DONATION TO HELP SOME OF AUSTRALIA’S SICKEST KIDS. Since striking a partnership with charity Supertee in late 2021, the family owned and operated childcare provider has donated 300 Supertees—a superherothemed medical garment that replaces traditional hospital gowns—valued at $45 each to the Giftedcharity.tochildren in hospital as part of a pack that comprises a comic, bookmark, sticker and handwritten message, Supertees have been designed to allow for easy medical treatment while preparing little heroes to fight their battle against critical illness. Made with hypoallergenic cotton and a non-toxic print, they feature underarm and side openings for temperature and tube access as well as press studs on shoulders to allow for Risechanges.&Shine

Catering for Years 7 to 10 and with only 30 students on-site, the school specialises in providing a holistic approach to education whilst still being an independent private school that covers the full Australian curriculum. Because of this, its program has become highly sought after by families where children have become disengaged from learning, or those that need extra learning support.“Students come to us from all backgrounds: whether neurodiverse, from homeschooling, or sadly due to trauma or bullying,” says Bronnie Sewell Principal at MIS. “Sometimes our young people have never known what it’s like to be in a supportive education environment.”Withsmallclass sizes of just 15, the school has a lead educator and a teachers aide in every single classroom, plus a learning support team and a youth worker on site.

“The small class sizes allows us to achieve more individualised support, and a lot more one-onone small group work,” says Mrs Sewell. With a model of Nurture, Growth and Transition, the school supports students to create a pathway and building them up for success once they leave MIS.

“Once nurtured into our positive learning environment, we aim to grow their capacity as a learner, grow their resilience, growing their social capacity and their academic qualities. And then as they approach Year 10, we transition our young person either back into mainstream (should they choose year 11 and 12), or into the workforce. It might be trade, or whatever that young person’s journey is.” Mrs Sewell joined the school as Principal at the beginning of 2022, and has already seen significant steps made in students. “It’s been really lovely to see the progress in young people actually achieving success, not both academically, but from a social perspective as well.” mis.qld.edu.au

On January 6, 1907, in an inner-city district of Rome, Italy, Dr Maria Montessori opened the doors on Casa dei Bambini—or “Children’s House.” It was here she began to teach some of the city’s most disadvantaged and previously unschooled children.

CENTRELEARNINGEARLYMONTESSORI

T he founding of the first Montessori school more than 100 years ago has led to a worldwide shift towards child-centric, experience-led learning.

Inspired by its stunning coastal backdrop, Habitat Early Learning will bring this leading early education method to the Sunshine Coast’s northern beaches, opening the doors on its new, purposebuilt Montessori Early Learning Centre in Peregian Springs in Term 4, 2022. THE ROLE OF THE MONTESSORI TEACHER Smeeta Vanmali, the centre’s Montessori advisor, says the role of the teacher in this sense is to guide children in their learning, without inserting themselves too much in that natural learning process.

Smeeta explains that by learning these life skills, respect for materials becomes evident within the classroom too.

THATIMPORTANT“IT’SACHILD IS SPOKEN TO AS A CAPABLE HUMANRESPECTEDANDBEING”

“You’ll often find children cleaning windows and helping with everything that they are able. Making their beds, packing them away. Depending on what age and stage they're at, children are also introduced to washing their bowls and washing their glasses in the sinks. All our Montessori environments have little in-situ sinks in place.” What adolescents may see as chores, Montessori children see as part of their everyday responsibilities.“Theseareall activities that the children love to engage in. As they grow up, these activities become part of their normal lives. They learn to respect their surroundings and take care of their environment.”

Being architecturally designed and purpose-built, the new Habitat Early Learning Centre in Peregian Springs has been able to consider every little detail—designing the entire space around supporting the implementation of the Montessori method.

“At mealtime, children are guided and encouraged to set their place in preparation for eating. They learn how to pour water and drink out of glasses. We provide them with real-life materials such as cutlery, crockery and glass, teaching them how to respectfully use breakable items,” says Smeeta.“Ifthey spill a little bit of water, that's okay. We can get a sponge, we guide them to clean it up and then start again. There's always opportunity to learn and grow—for every action there's a consequence. That's the life skill that they learn. If something happens, what can we do about it?”

Dr Montessori believed multi-age settings enable children to learn better social skills, and to develop academically in a cooperative, non-competitive learning environment.

“In designing the learning environment, we have made special provision for our families and team. We have a parent room, a breastfeeding lounge, a multipurpose engaged child,” Smeeta says. After close observation, a Montessori teacher will provide learning materials appropriate to each child.

“Montessori has a fine motor classroom activity with two bowls, some grains and a spoon. We're teaching children how to transfer the grains without spilling. They are learning to feed themselves, and also working on things such as hand-eye coordination, crossing the path of the brain

midway, in preparation for further reading and writing,” says Smeeta.

CLASSROOMSMULTI-AGEPURPOSE-BUILT,

During their day, children have access to dustpan and brush, and access to a water bottle and a sponge.

Instead of presuming that children of the same age develop and progress at the same rate, Montessori schools believe multi-age classrooms enable children to work more productively at their natural pace. Montessori classrooms are typically set up in three-year age ranges.

“We may demonstrate and model learning activities, but we provide freedom for the student to learn in their own way,” explains Smeeta. “Children are redirected to meaningful tasks throughout the work cycle.”When a Montessori teacher talks with a child, they will always get down to their level to maintain eye contact, speaking to them respectfully.“Children in the early learning period are like little sponges. They are absorbing so much language, it’s important that a child is spoken to as a capable and respected human being.”This method of respect, guidance and independence is nurtured throughout their dayto-day routines.

AUTO EDUCATION Children are capable of educating themselves without external guidance.

A CALM, OUTDOORNATURALSPACE

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MONTESSORI EARLY LEARNING?

A Montessori early years classroom is quite distinct. The walls are painted in neutral shades, the classroom is quiet and calm, minimising distraction and overstimulation.Artworkiscarefully chosen and displayed at children’s eye level. Resources that appeal to all five senses (sight, touch, smell, taste, sound) and natural, real-life items are used in preference to play materials. There is a place for everything, and there is plenty of space for children to move around without disturbing others.

“They take care of the plants and they water them everyday. They can pick the herbs and discover the different smells. “They may collect them in a basket in the morning, which we might give to the onsite chef to incorporate into the meal. This way, the children can see the whole process. Montessori is not just about the end product, it's about that process. Children will be involved in every step of the way.”

“We include components such as sensory and edible plants so that children are able to engage with the greenery outdoors.

SENSITIVE PERIODS There are certain periods during which children are more ready to learn certain skills. These are known as sensitive periods, and last only as long as is necessary for the child to acquire the skills. Through observation, Montessori teachers must identify sensitive periods in their students and provide the resources for children to flourish during this time.

studio for yoga and a curriculum room for collaboration,” says Smeeta.

THE ENVIRONMENTPREPARED Children learn best in an environment that has been prepared to enable them to do things for themselves. Always child-centred, the learning environment should promote freedom for children to explore materials of their choice.

OPENING TERM 4

“The learning is not just inside the classroom. Many components of the indoor environment are emulated in the outdoor environment,” says Smeeta.

“We are often asked whether Montessori is for a particular type of child. It is really quite the opposite!” says Smeeta.

“Because we follow a child's individual learning pathway, the Montessori Approach caters to all children—far more so than traditional classroom learning. Because we focus on independence from a very young age, we teach children all the life skills that they're going to need for success. It is a learning method that can improve outcomes for all children.”

Respect is shown for children by not interrupting their concentration; by giving children the freedom to make choices and to learn for themselves.

Private, public… is it possible to have the best of both worlds when it comes to antenatal care?

the group care approach fits them perfectly. It gives them the best of both worlds— private care, without the blow-out gap fees.

Noticing this trend, Sunshine Obstetrics has created a modernised form of affordable private pregnancy care—ditching those nasty gap fees and allowing women to birth privately without any huge out-of-pocket expenses. We chat to Sunshine Obstetrics Practice Manager Suzanne Wall to find out more about this innovative approach to antenatal care.

PREGNANCY

A new model of PREGNANCY CARE

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? There are varying options and circumstances, but if you have private health insurance, you can have all of your obstetrics care and birth at Buderim Private with a private obstetrician for just $990. This way, you can save a couple of thousand dollars, because the out-of-pocket costs for a traditional private care pregnancy could be three or four thousand dollars. WHERE CAN YOU BIRTH? Our only hospital for births is Buderim Private Hospital, as we find the level of care there is exceptional. But you can also come to us for your pregnancy care if you are birthing through SCUH (Sunshine Coast University Hospital). We have created a range of care models to ensure we can cater for the many different situations families may face today. You can come to us if you don't have a Medicare card, if you don't have health insurance. There's lots of different options. We know that having a baby is a very special experience, but it doesn’t have to be expensive!

WHAT IS GROUP CARE, HOW DOES IT WORK? Our ‘group care’ model is where the three obstetricians at Sunshine Obstetrics—Dr. James Orford, Dr. Kirsten Morrow and George Bogiatzis—and the three midwives share the care between them. All appointments are rotated between the care team throughout the pregnancy, so families get to know each of the three obstetricians during that time. Families seem to really like this model because it’s almost like getting a second opinion each time, it’s comforting to get another person’s input on any questions you may have because sometimes you might have something you want to run past someone else. But you also get to know and trust the three OBGYNs. In particular, we are finding that a lot of second-time mums really like this care model. After trying the public or private system first time around, they realise that

here is a huge range of pregnancy care and birthing options available to women today. Sadly, however, the decision around pregnancy care is often driven by cost. Even when families have private health cover, many are still opting for a public system care model, simply because the private gap fees can be so high.

WHAT AGE DO YOU INTRODUCE TOOTHPASTE?  You can introduce toothpaste when teeth first erupt in the mouth using an age-appropriate toothpaste. WHAT AGE SHOULD WE START BRINGING BABY TO SEE A DENTIST? Ideally a child should see a dentist when they get their first teeth so that any development issues can be identified early. HOW DO YOU BRUSH A BABY’S FIRST TEETH? Giving your baby a toothbrush to play with and chew on is a good introduction to brushing their teeth. There are so many kids’ toothbrushes on the market today, just make sure you are using an age-appropriate toothbrush with soft bristles and use the toothbrush in conjunction with an age-appropriate toothpaste for your child.

We make sure our kids always see the same dentist every time so that they build a relationship with that dentist. This is to reduce any anxiety and fear. The goal is to have our children enjoy their visits to see the dentist. ANY OTHER TIPS FOR CARING FOR A BABY’S FIRST TEETH?  Minimise sugary foods and drinks and sticky foods. Keep up their water intake. Avoid a bottle to go to sleep with, if possible, to prevent bottle caries. And eat a balanced diet.

Caring for

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A BABY’S FIRST VISIT TO THE DENTIST?  Baby’s first visit to the dentist is usually just a casual introduction to the dentist and the dental team. We always make this initial visit as fun as possible. For example, we make glove animals, we have bubbles, a TV, they can have a ride in the chair using the buttons themselves. We play games and then have an examination if child is happy to open their mouth for us to have a look. Of course, there is a little goodie bag to take away too! It is a good idea to bring your child along to your appointments so that they get used to coming to the dentist. WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S REGULARLY?SAMETHATIMPORTANTYOUSEETHEDENTIST

There’s nothing cuter than baby’s first toothy smile. But this adorable moment also means it is time to introduce dental care. Dr David Barker from Sunny Coast Dental is here with his tips on caring for baby’s first teeth.

“It’s absolutely fine for babies to chew books—they are simply investigating what this big square thing is! Opt for tough board books and canvas books that are designed to withstand a baby’s enthusiasm,” says Karen. WHAT CAN YOU DO WHILST READING TOGETHER? Turning pages: At around 12 months old, your baby may begin to grab for the book and want to turn the pages. At first, Karen Gawen from Sunshine Coast Libraries joins us to show us how baby books are about so much more than reading. they will probably grab several pages at a time, but the more they handle books the easier it becomes. Let them turn the pages, explore the book and by the age of around three years old, your toddler will likely have mastered the skill of turning just one page at a time. Try interactive books: Many books have interactive elements, such as flaps to lift, buttons to turn, textures to touch. These books are great for getting baby’s fingers moving in different ways. They are also wonderful for keeping a baby engaged and focused on the book, therefore developing their attention span. These ‘touch-and-feel’ books or those with unique textures also support sensory development. Bub will become more accustomed to feeling new textures, which can help them to feel more comfortable with other textures such as clay, sand, and play dough. Pointing: Pointing to pictures as you read encourages your baby to do the same. This is the beginning of communication between the two of you—they point to ask for an explanation. As well, by using your finger to follow words in a book as you read to your child, you are teaching your baby that printed symbols and words have meaning. And, of course, pointing means they are flexing those finger muscles that will help them hold a pencil in the future.

“There are so many ways that books support the development of fine motor skills. And because reading and writing are such inseparable skills, developing these skills through exploring books is the perfect way to prepare young children for writing in the future,” says Karen Gawen, Young People’s Services Supervisor from Sunshine CoastWhenCouncil.yourchild interacts with a book, it gets those little fingers, hands and wrists working.“Turning pages, pointing to illustrations, tracing letters—these are all rich opportunities for development, all found from the simple act of sharing a book,” saysSharedKaren.reading also develops hand-eye coordination and stimulates the senses of sight, touch, sound and taste, Karen explains (because we know all books must go straight in the mouth!).

Arguably one of the best netballers in the world, Sunshine Coast Lightning player Karla Pretorius has now taken on a new challenge, welcoming her baby girl Kara into the world. We chat to this sporting superstar about motherhood, the juggle, and the return to court.

SUNSHINECOASTLIGHTNING.COM.AU

What’s your mama superpower? I only now understand the true definition of multi-tasking! Any tips for our readers who may want to return to playing a sport after having a baby? Have a good support network, start slowly and don’t rush things.  Also, don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t go according to plan.

#LetsGoLightning!

Congratulations on your new baby! The adjustment to motherhood is not an easy one—how are you going? We are so grateful for our little baby girl.  It’s been a huge adjustment to our lives but one we embrace and absolutely love. We are learning and growing everyday. I’m certainly tired, but with the minimal sleep came a lot of joy and love.  What’s your favourite part of being a new mum so far? How one’s life just changed forever, the unconditional love you have for each other and the honour of being her everything. What are you finding is the biggest challenge so far? Probably the change in sleeping patterns. But you get use to it very quickly. You have to!

Tell us about baby Kara! What little personality traits are you starting to see? She is very friendly and tenacious just like her dad. Are you hoping to come back to professional netball—and when? The aim is to be back on the court by the New Year. I’m looking forward to getting back to playing. I know there are big challenges lying ahead but I’m excited for it. It helps that I have a lot of support in doing so.  As a professional athlete, what does safely returning to elite training after having a baby look like? It is so important to have good support and get advice/help from professionals—in my case our strength and conditioning coach as well as my obstetrician and the rest of the medical team, who have a ‘return to play’ program prepared for me. Every athlete will be different, but general advice is to start with low impact training to increase stability—especially strengthening the pelvic floor and core. Then gradually

increase to higher impact and strength exercises. But it all depends on how I progress and respond at each training stage. I will have a program of modified sport-specific exercises, until I’m ready to return to play. The mama juggle is a crazy one. How will you balance professional sport with motherhood? It is all new to me! But so far it is all about having a bit of a plan, but also knowing that things won’t always go accordingly, which is okay. We just adapt and try again.

D esigned by m3 Architecture, the campus features the most advanced school buildings on the Sunshine Coast. It has been designed specifically for a collaborative ‘team-teaching’ model that replaces traditional classrooms with flexible learning spaces. The building will accommodate Years 1 through 6, with the students split into three cohorts. Each will be taught by a team of six teachers and teachers’ assistants in spaces with dedicated and adaptable learning zones over two levels.

Founded on reclaimed farming land in 1979 as the Suncoast Christian Academy, the school’s first building was an old pineapple packing shed. From such humble origins, down through generations bound by the mission of seeing students grow in their faith, character, and learning, the new campus will be a fitting affirmation of the school’s legacy and special character.Theschool teaches more by stage than age, with learning based on a child’s level in each subject. The building has been designed to accommodate teams of teachers and teacher assistants working together with students in large, medium and small group configurations. The flexible nature of the facility means that spaces can accommodate groups of five pupils up to 100. The new campus is phase one of a 25year master building plan. It envisages and allows for future capacity as the school looks to add an additional 100 students. There are currently two classrooms for each grade. The aspiration is to increase that to three without changing the integrity and community focus of the school.

It will provide flexible and collaborative learning spaces where a team of dedicated Christian teachers will provide inquiry-based teaching to equip students for a future world where effectivelyTeachersstagesconfigurationsteachingtowillthinkingcommunicationcreativity,andcriticalskillsareessential.Theopenteachingspacesbezonedandfurnishedallowforavarietyofmodes,withdifferentfordifferentoflearningandsubjects.willbeabletoandintuitivelytailor lessons to the abilities and learning needs of individual students.Theschool’s principal, Greg Mattiske, says team-teaching delivers the best social, emotional and academic outcomes for students. WHAT AGES DO YOU TEACH AT MAROOCHY SURF SCHOOL?

WHAT IS SURFGROMS? SurfGroms is a nationally accredited learn-to-surf program for five- to 12-year olds.Itis a great introduction to surfing for kids. They play games like tiggy and little fun games with footies and soccer balls; there’s beach education and of course they learn to surf! It's fun and action packed. We're the number one SurfGroms delivery centre in Australia. Our programs are well recognised, and we are proud to be the biggest and best one on the coast!

WHAT IS IT LIKE, HELPING KIDS CATCH THEIR FIRST WAVE? Oh, there's nothing like it! I've surfed all around the world professionally, and you know that feeling yourself. All the instructors get a lot of enjoyment to see that look on a child's face. It feels just as good for the coach as what it does for the child, so they're always striving to get the kids the best wave they can!

AND THE LOCATION YOU HAVE IS AMAZING! Oh yeah, we've got a great demographic in the fact that we operate between Maroochydoore and Mooloolaba. It gives us the versatility to get the kids surfing in the best conditions possible every time. We always try and get the kids the best wave. We send emails and messages the evening before the kids are all booked in and to let them know out of which of those two locations we'll be operating at the next day. There are very few surf schools on the coast that are able to have options with regards to their location on any given day.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL A CHILD THAT WANTS TO TRY SURFING BUT IS A BIT NERVOUS TO DIVE IN? For any kids that might be a little bit nervy about it, we try and take the attention away from just the pure fact of surfing and make it a fun experience— whether it's in or out of the water. There’s nothing like the feeling of riding your first wave and then you're hooked! So,give it a go and you never know unless you try. There’s a reason there's so many surfers around the world—because it's so much fun!

ot all cubbies constructed from palm leaves go to plan… This was the lesson children at Flinders Early Learning Centre (FELC) learnt recently when the rain cleared and they were able to reconnect with one of their favourite programs, the Bush Kindy, which sees small groups of 10 children at a time, along with two specialist teachers, explore and engage in the wetlands forest that runs between FELC and Matthew Flinders Anglican College.

“Of course, cubbies aren’t always as sturdy as we imagine they will be, but this becomes a good lesson in ‘thinking on our feet’ and adapting to changes. The children join their friends in finding stronger branches and tougher sticks to rebuild a shelter that is big enough and strong enough to get inside.”

Jo“Allsays.agreed it would be delicious to cook lemon cake and make citrus juice—and it was! Through these organic processes, children develop resilience, persistence and the ability to follow through with an idea.”

“Each week the relationships continue to form and strengthen, with the children displaying a deep sense of empathy, compassion and mindfulness of their actions to ensure their friends’ safety.”Thisis displayed through many small actions— holding the VIPs’ hands and guiding them around the gardens; slowing down their play so no water is splashed; sharing paints, pencils and paper to make art together; and inviting their friends to join in their cooking play, pouring them special ‘coffees’ in the bark kitchen.

“The mornings bring a continual chatter and warm welcomes as the children celebrate the arrival of their VIPs with glee,” Jo says.

Children at FELC are also building strong connections with their VIPs who visit each Thursday morning through the Moving Moments program, which brings seniors who are living independently and children of all ages together to share in fun, playbased activities supported by professional educators and artists.

Along the way they build relationships, share, co-operate, develop self-control, test ideas and friendships, extend their range of experience, form associations and develop the five senses, provoking wonder, curiosity and intellectual engagement.

The Flinders Early Learning Centre (FELC) supports 120 families with children from three-to six-years of age through creative Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs. Located in a beautiful rainforest setting in Buderim next to the Matthew Flinders Anglican College campus, FELC is a licensed Child Care Centre delivering compassionate and caring play-based programs in natural environments inspired by the child-centred Reggio Emilia experience. The aim is to ensure the learning is inviting, fun and creative.

• Talk positively and confidently about starting and attending school.

S

“Being school ready is not dependent on whether your child can read and write. Being school ready is about the whole child. When deciding on the right time for your child to start school, it’s important to consider a range of factors, including your child’s age, emotional maturity, language skills, social skills, physical wellbeing and their ability to undertake simple self-help tasks independently,” says Mrs Zweck.

TIPS TO EASE THE TRANSITION:

• Visit the school with your child before they start so they’re familiar with the classrooms, playground equipment,

• Speak with your child about the change in their daily routine, how will they get to school, what time they must get up in the morning and what they will have in their lunch box.

As children grow and develop, families make adjustments and changes. One of the major adjustments families make is in response to children starting school. Even when children have attended prior-to-school settings, starting school remains a time when families, as well as children, experience a great deal of change.

POSITIVE START TO SCHOOL

bubblers, toilets, sick bay and other key areas.

• Communicate with your child. Take time to tell your child what might be happening at school that day, and in the afternoon, ask your child about their day. This is a great way to build confidence, and to find out how they are feeling as they settle in. If you have any concerns talk with your child’s teacher, who will provide further insight to their day.

• Develop good relationships with other parents, especially other parents of your child’s friends.

• The Mission and Ministry team spend time in the Service singing and reading stories from the Bible weekly.

PACIFICLUTHERAN.QLD.EDU.AU

• Meet the teachers that may be working with your child and speak about them positively to your child and attend Parent Information Sessions.

• Avoid overloading your child. When children begin school, they tire easily. It may be worth considering fewer extracurricular activities such as swimming, music or dance lessons, until they adjust to their new routine.

• Tell your child about support systems that the school offers. e.g. Pacific Lutheran College have a buddy system where Year 5 students support and make connections with children in their first year of school.

There are a range of transition to school experiences that Pacific Lutheran Early Learning centre implements to support children transitioning to Prep within the Foundation College. Some examples include:

Starting Prep can be a difficult time for both parent and child, but it is also exciting and fun. The most important thing is to be as prepared as possible following simple strategies and acknowledging feelings of your child and your own.

• Arranging visits to Prep to meet the teachers and tour the setting.

• Establish good attendance patterns for your child, develop family routines at home to support your child’s learning at school e.g., read with your child each night.

• Reading stories about starting school.

• Attend library and Chapel services on the College grounds and towards the end of the year have lunch with the current Preps and enjoy some play together.

“I visit children coming to Pacific Lutheran College from other settings, across September to November, Term 4 of the College calendar. During these visits I tell a story, take the College uniform, and leave a special gift of a book, so that the children can begin building a connection to school,” says Mrs Zweck.

“Consider how you will manage your family’s routine and work arrangements during the school term. For example, if you will need out of school hours care. We encourage families to book in early for Before and After School and Vacation Care, to secure the days required,” Mrs Zweck says.

• Read books together about starting school.

• Prep students visit the service to talk about what school is like and show new children the College uniform, school bag and some of their work.

“Don’t forget you are your child’s secure base, and you can calm them best. Most importantly talk to your child and let them know you’ll support them and when needed you’ll figure out a solution to any problem together. It’s such an exciting time of growth for you and your child.”

Things you may consider as a family to help with a positive transition to school:

• Providing literacy items such as reading and writing materials in everyday play activities.

• Be involved in your child’s school community e.g., participating in playgroups, orientation days or other social gatherings like school fetes and welcome barbecues.

PREP

• Attend school events such as the book week parade, an assembly or school concert.

• Support children to develop their self-help and social skills through everyday routine activities such as mealtimes when children will practice using lunch boxes and drink bottles.

• Say goodbye confidently. Saying a quick, confident goodbye may help your child to feel secure and reassured that you trust that they will be okay.

• Label your child’s belongings Labelling everything, including clothing, can help reduce anxiety for children, school staff and yourself. At school, children are responsible for their belongings and labels can help them with this.

“Our educators also play a significant role in supporting a successful transition to school. It’s important that your child’s individual needs are considered carefully to ensure that the transition process is positive and effective,” Mrs Zweck says.

• Talking to children about school, and encouraging them to ask questions or voice their concerns.

WHAT ARE THE COST SAVINGS? The average cost to nappy a child for two years in disposable nappies is $1800. A generous set-up of cloth nappies costs $300–$500, most of which should last two or more children. So cloth nappies cost about one tenth that of disposables. WHY USE CLOTH NAPPIES? Disposable nappies contain traces of dioxin, an extremely toxic, carcinogenic by-product of the paper-bleaching process. They also contain TBT, a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals. Plus, it is estimated that it takes about 250-500 years for a disposable nappy to break down, which is long after your children, grandchildren, and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone. DON'T FORGET YOUR PRE-KID WORLD One of the big changes that doesn’t get spoken about enough, is the potential disconnect we may feel from our pre-kid village. This is such an important group to invest in as well. We know our pre-kid village loves us. We know that they have been there for us in the past. And if we take a moment, we know that they would want to be there for us now. Having children is a big transition in our life but it should not come at the expense of everything before it. We connected with our friends over many things. These things still exist. Our village people are all capable of dealing with change and are able to compensate when we are going through something new. Communication is always key. We want to keep our old trusty village, we want to continue to invest in them when we have the energy to do so. Communicate this and they will understand. We are better for our children when we as parents are feeling supported and connected, so take time to look after you. And if you haven’t found your village, give Parentline a call today.

Finding a sport that preschoolers love to do week after week can be tricky. This multi-sports program has found the solution.

“Kids really love the predictable structure of warm up, stretches, sport skills and the circuit,” says Rebecca.“Ourcircuits are set up to practise our balancing, running, hopping, crawling in or under and stepping over things. We change the circuit every week depending on the skills we’ve learnt for the core sport and to keep children guessing what will be set up today,” says Rebecca. Football (aka soccer), is often dubbed ‘the world sport’. Played by 250 million people in over 200 countries and the most common sport for kids to play, it is the most popular sport on the planet.

B eing such a global activity, football comes in many styles—one of the most admired being Brazilian. And now local kids have the chance to learn this fun and skillful style of football through an expanding Brazilian soccer skills program here on the Sunshine Coast.

Born and raised in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Cesar has always had a passion for football. Having played his whole life for competitive local clubs in Brazil, his love for sports and teaching led him to complete his Physical Education and Sports Coaching degree in 2008. Since then, he has developed an A WIN FOR SUNSHINE COAST KIDS

In terms of the sport, there’s no difference between Brazilian football and the football played worldwide. But Cesar explains it’s more the style and philosophy.

“Football is a household activity in Brazil. Brazil has won the most World Cups, every child in Brazil grows up with the main sport being football,” explains Cesar da Silva, Founder and Director of Brazilian Skills Soccer, Sunshine Coast.

expertise in delivering early childhood sports programs and coaching football for all different age groups. Moving to the Sunshine Coast four years ago with his wife and children, he has now opened Brazilian Skills Soccer, to share this knowledge and passion with the local kids. “For me, starting up Brazilian Skills Soccer is my dream coming true! Getting children started in sports from a very young age has a huge impact in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle, promoting lifelong benefits to their physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills.”

“We have some kids that had never played football when they started with us, and they have gone on to join a local club and play weekend competition. They are really into it, which is wonderful to see.”

“For the kids that are showing more potential we invite to the new elite academy. We train those kids together, and they’re all playing together at Coolum Football Club in the Football Queensland competition on the weekend. They are absolutely smashing it, so that’s so good to see a solid line of progression for the kids that have become more serious about the sport.”

We all know how hard it can be to get a baby out of the house sometimes, therefore Bubble Babies classes are booked on a week-by-week booking system with no term commitment. The program is designed to introduce water awareness and familiarisation to babies in a calm and stress-free way. WHY TAKE THIS INFORMAL APPROACH? We find that an informal session such as this works far better for both parent and child. There’s no pressure to ‘learn’, it’s more about instinctively floating and reaching, and feeling happy and comfortable in the water. This is vital for babies to experience early; it makes learning technical swimming skills far easier once they are ready (usually around 24 monthsBubbleold).Babies sessions are also a wonderful way for parent and baby to spend one-on-one time together and bond in those precious early days in a stress-free, relaxing space. “To see Brie express herself, to see her creativity grow, and to see the happiness shine in her eyes once more, I’m just so eternally grateful.”

“Tam is one of those magical people that brings calm, comfort and understanding. You know those magical people that make the world a better place? And her positive energy really flows into the children.”

parents hope for. It’s wonderful to bring joy and fun back into their lives.”

For Brie, her osteomyelitis is under control and she can live a relatively normal life for a while.

“Weekly art with Tam was the one thing she looked forward to during those difficult months. She had something safe and secure to hold onto during those many days in hospital. When so much else in her future was uncertain,” says Zoey. As Tam got to know Brie, they would chat in their sessions. Tam would give her techniques to get through each monthly infusion.“Tamhelped her find a calm place to manage the needles and the pain, and simple meditations to cope with the side effects— as the infusions could make her feel very nauseous,” says Zoey. “She carried a dark cloud with her and Tam managed to turn it into a rainbow.”

“Brie still sees Tam each week. Her sessions are more of an art class now, as she is at peace with the life she has. But I’m sure they have a good chat whilst they paint!”

“There was something about expressing herself visually that really worked for Brie,” says Zoey. “She was so confused and frustrated by the sudden change in her life. Verbalising that volume of emotion was impossible for an eight-year old.”

Over the weeks, Brie found her spark again. Her fracture healed, her infusions were gradually ticked off.

Health experts and sisters Kristyn and Alissa from GutAid share their tips on maintaining a healthy gut next time you take a trip.

KEEPING UP WITH THE FOOD

A s the world begins to open up again, travel is cautiously back on the to-do list. But, as fun as a holiday is, it can often mean gut problems. Everything from the long-haul flights, recycled plane air, new foods, new organisms from different climates, jet lag and more. All these things wreak havoc on our guts, which in turn affect your immunity, energy, and sleep. But the good news is, there are lots of things we can do to support our gut while travelling.

GUT TRAVELLING KIT Probiotics: Being exposed to different foods and new organisms is often the cause of traveller’s diarrhoea. Research has shown Saccharomyces Bourlardii (SB) can help prevent and treat traveller’s diarrhoea.  If travelling to an area which has an increased risk for traveller’s diarrhoea its best to start taking an SB probiotic two weeks prior to leaving, then for the duration BY ALISSA MACK, NATUROPATH AT GUTAID | GUTAID.COM.AU

We tend to make poor choices when we are ‘hangry’ so packing lots of good snacks is a must! I fill sectioned bento boxes with many different varieties of foods. I have mainly good choices with a treat to add to the excitement of the trip. I also make sure I have some extra options in the suitcase to pull out when we get to our destination, as there’s not always food on hand.

KEEP MOVING Often after long flights or road trips and bad food our digestion can become very sluggish. Encourage them to keep their bodies moving in the airport, on the plane, when you land or make a stop, this will help with digestion.  If your kids are little, think of a few ‘active challenges’ that you can set for them there’s generally a little space somewhere!

KRISTYN'S TIPS FOR TRAVELLING WITH KIDS

58 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AUSPRING 2022 HEALTH

KEEPING HYDRATED Keep the sugary drinks (and caffeine and alcohol for us big kids) to a minimum while flying. They mess with your microbes and are dehydrating.

A healthy gut of your trip for prevention. If travellers’ diarrhoea occurs or if your gut just doesn’t feel right, SB can be taken at high dose to help treat.    Digestive Enzymes: Digestive enzymes are a lifesaver when it comes to digestion. These can be taken preventatively with each meal to help support general digestion or when you feel like your digestion is just not working so great as a treatment.  Digestive Enzymes are also perfect for long haul flights when your digestion is usually disrupted due to inactivity and often highly refined, high carb and high salt meals.   There are also specific digestive enzymes supplements for dairy and gluten so if you're someone who usually needs to avoid these but wants to indulge you can without the severity of symptoms.  Peppermint Tea: Having peppermint tea on hand is great as it is an antispasmodic so it will help to relieve digestive symptoms.

Build leg muscles: Ice skating is a great way to build and tone leg muscles.

Increased cardiovascular fitness: Ice skating is a fabulous aerobic workout, so you can crank up your cardio fitness without even knowing it.

Lucky for Brisbane, the BEST summer entertainment is right here. Perfect for chill times whilst burning off plenty of energy, ice skating is becoming one of the river city’s favourite summer sports.

ith spring in the air and the days warming up, it’s time to get excited about the sunny days ahead.

Looking for something to keep kids active AND cool?

Improves flexibility: Through gliding and synchronised movements, your joints and muscles get a great workout, which will have you feeling more flexible in no time. Skating is said to be more beneficial than cycling and running because it works almost every major muscle.

Builds endurance: Ice skating requires energy over an extended period. And the longer you skate, the longer you push your endurance. This helps with other sports and activities too.

Being great for your health, as well as heaps of fun, Andrew Leventis from Iceworld believes that ice skating offers families the best of both worlds in the summer.

“As you enter the rink, you’ll escape the intense Queensland heat and instantly feel refreshed and revitalised. The music and lights will dazzle you, the skating will surprise you and most importantly you’ll be as cool as ice!” Andrew says. “Iceworld has two Olympic-sized ice rinks in Brisbane (Boondall and Acacia Ridge), each with a cool internal temperature of 10 degrees, making it a very appealing destination during those hot summer months!”Aswell as keeping kids chill, ice skating comes with many health benefits: Improved balance: Ice skating helps to improve your balance in a fun and positive way. The slippery surface quickly trains you to stay on your feet!

“Iceworld’s Skate School runs during each school term and is suitable for ages three years and above,” Andrew explains.
