The Mother Awakening™ Be part of the generation that heals

Have you ever calmly said, “We don’t lick other children,” while internally screaming, What is happening to me?! Have you ever watched your child sleep, heart bursting with love, then hours later, found yourself crying alone in the shower because something cracked inside you?

“Motherhood has a way of opening doors we didn’t know were closed,” says Philippa Scott from Fantastic Futures. “But trauma is real, and it lingers. And when we don’t talk about it, it can quietly shape how we mother, cope, and carry ourselves

through the chaos.”

“Parenting doesn’t just teach you patience. It exposes every unhealed place inside you,” says Philippa. “It rips open the patterns, the wounds, the words you swore you’d never say—and hands them back to you, demanding: What will you do now?”

To address this, Philippa has launched The Mother Awakening™—a movement for women who are done repeating patterns that hurt and who are ready to stop passing down pain and start building something better.

M“At The Mother Awakening™, we don’t teach you to parent better. We teach you to heal deeper — because when you heal, parenting transforms on its own,” says Philippa.

“Whether it’s through a simple

mindset shift, a supportive community, or one of their gentle programs, this work is about reclaiming your identity, healing what hurts, and creating a legacy of love and connection.” fantasticfuture.com.au

our communities. This expansion will help us reach more families and provide the safety net they desperately need.”

ay is Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to shine a light on the challenges many families face behind closed doors. To mark this month, SunnyKids has announced the expansion of its early intervention and family support services into the Moreton Bay region. The move

comes in response to growing demand for assistance as more children face instability in the wake of domestic violence.

“For a child to truly thrive, they need to feel safe, secure, and supported,” said a SunnyKids spokesperson. “Sadly, that’s not the reality for too many children in

In addition to growing its geographic footprint, SunnyKids is launching a new transitional housing project to support families escaping violent situations. The program aims to address a common challenge—families forced to return to unsafe homes due to a lack of secure, temporary accommodation.

“Our transitional housing will give families a safe place to land and begin the process of rebuilding their lives,” the spokesperson said. “It’s a vital stepping stone that gives kids and their parents the chance to rebuild their lives in a safe and supported environment.”

Unlike many social support programs, this initiative receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the local community to operate.

SunnyKids is calling on locals to get involved—whether by donating, organising fundraisers, or simply helping to raise awareness about the services available.

“Every action counts,” the spokesperson added. “Together, we can create a future where every child feels safe, loved, and free to enjoy their childhood.”

HOW MUM-OF-THREE, XIAN GARNIER , TURNED HER SIDE-HUSTLE INTO HER DREAM JOB WITH THE HELP OF TAFE QUEENSLAND

To say that the transition to parenthood is life changing is an understatement. Of course, there is the overwhelming unconditional love you now get to experience—the joy of seeing the world through fresh eyes and watching your child grow into their own little person. Then there’s the more literal change in lifestyle, with late nights now looking a whole lot different to what they did pre-kids. But the transition can also have a profound impact on who we are as people, causing us to stop and reflect on more existential matters such as what direction we want our lives to take and the type of role model we wish to be for our children.

for new mums like her to start their own businesses in order to stay home with their babies, Xian created an Instagram page aimed at giving mumpreneurs exposure, sending them questions about themselves and their businesses and platforming them to her followers as a way to make some extra money while she juggled life as a stay-at-home mum. But while she initially began using online graphic design platform Canva to create her posts and make them more engaging, she quickly discovered a love for design.

Ever since becoming a mum, I’ve had this urge to be better and do better for my daughters.

For mother-of-three Xian Garnier, becoming a parent is what inspired her to turn what had previously been a hobby and side-hustle into a career. Determined to teach her daughters to pursue whatever makes them happy, the 27-year-old decided to grow her skills in an area she is passionate about and forge a future that not only meets the needs of her and her family but also brings her joy.

“Ever since becoming a mum, I’ve had this urge to be better and do better for my daughters,” Xian said.

“I was a stay-at-home mum but I had this longing to earn money and contribute to the household. I’m not sure why, but I know many of us stay-at-home mums feel that way just because we aren’t contributing financially; it’s a nasty stigma we place upon ourselves as a society, and it’s simply not true. But at the time, that’s how I felt, and that led me to look for ways I could ‘do it all’, as they say.”

Having realised how common it was

“After you have kids, you lose your sense of self, and it’s so cool to try new things and not just rediscover but create a new version of yourself,” she said.

Xian began teaching herself to use the platform and as her skill level grew, so too did her confidence.

“I was doing designs on my iPad at my kitchen table, and the more I did, the better I got,” said Xian.

“But while I was great at it, I would often see graphic designers on social media pretty much mocking people who designed on Canva— which I took as a challenge,” she laughs.

“By this stage, I’d realised I loved design and I wanted to improve my skills in order to effectively help my current and any future clients. Plus, I like to think ahead, and most graphic design jobs require you to be qualified, so I wanted to make sure I had the qualification to fall back on if I had to get a ‘traditional’ job when my kids are all in school. So, I enrolled in the Diploma of Graphic Design at TAFE Queensland and never looked back.”

Having just had her third daughter, Xian’s

This has provided me with the flexibility to work at night so I can be with my kids during the day.

recommenced—although it helped me learn and I was able to ask my teachers questions that I had regarding my real-life clients.”

Xian officially launched Kaizen Kreative (‘Kaizen’ being a Japanese philosophy meaning ‘continuous improvement’) in January 2024 after developing a passion for brand identity design, and has since provided her services to a range of small businesses. She is also building a following on social media, where she shares her insights and gives followers a peek behind the scenes of how graphic design works. This approach is clearly earning her attention, with Xian invited to present at last year’s Typism Skills Summit, as well as taking out the Second Wind Award at the I Did It Anyways Awards.

Now, a year after graduating, Xian’s business is thriving and she is earning work opportunities that enable her to build the lifestyle she wants.

decision to return to study is made all the more impressive by the fact that she and her family were technically homeless when she applied. As victims of the current rental crisis, Xian, her husband and their three young children were jumping between family members’ houses while they searched for a home.

“We eventually received help from an amazing organisation called BABI Youth and Family Service, who helped us out with accommodation until we got accepted for a house, then not long after we were accepted and moved into a new house, I received an email saying I was accepted into the course. So, I did some Canva design jobs on my iPad and used the money to get a cheap, 2014 MacBook Pro on Marketplace that I would go on to use throughout my studies,” Xian said.

“I didn’t have much, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me,” she said.

bond my classmates created despite not meeting in person was awesome and the teachers were so helpful.

“I had no Adobe experience so I was stressed about being behind, and I had reservations about the learning style, with it all being online and on Zoom. But my teachers were so patient, and they took us step-by-step through everything—you could see how passionate they were about the industry.”

While studying online with TAFE Queensland gave Xian the flexibility she needed to juggle parenting and her business aspirations, she required plenty of dedication as well as external support to achieve her goal.

“I’ve designed a lot of visual brand identities for small businesses since graduating but have slowed down after taking on a large regular client, which has let me achieve another goal— to do what I love alongside those that I love, which are my children,” Xian said.

“This client has really provided me with the flexibility to work at absurd hours of the night so I can be with my kids during the day, which is something that a traditional job just couldn’t offer me, and for that I’m incredibly grateful.”

While she now has the skills and knowledge to turn her passion into her dream career, Xian still fondly remembers her humble beginnings.

Xian completed her studies online, attending classes via Zoom three times a week over the course of 12 months.

“I was super nervous because I’m a massive introvert and a stay-at-home mum, so I only hang out with my kids, who are all under the age of five,” she laughs. “But it was amazing; the

“My mother-in-law came to the rescue most days I had a Zoom session, but in the times she couldn’t make it, the great thing about learning via Zoom was that my teachers would record the lessons for us to watch back if we needed,” she said.

“In order to get assignments done though, I would work late at night while my kids were asleep. And during the holidays halfway through the course, I started my business, which proved to be another hurdle when classes

“I still use Canva every now and then for light tasks,” she laughs, “but I’ve gained a deep appreciation of the graphic design industry knowing just how much work is involved— something that I may not have learnt if I just stayed designing on Canva instead of growing my skills and broadening my potential.

“If you’re like I was and considering a career in design, I say take the leap because amazing things happen when you do. In a year’s time, you can either have a qualification and be doing something you love, or be in the position you’re currently in and still considering it.”

PRIMARY STUDENTS AT FLINDERS STEP UP AS future thinkers

An innovative human-centred design thinking program in the Primary School at Matthew Flinders Anglican College is equipping students to be critical thinkers and ethical leaders in the future.

From Prep to Year 6, Flinders guides students through bespoke curriculum and immersive events to learn the design thinking cycle: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.

The goal is to empower each student to develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions to empathise with real-world problems and create innovative and viable solutions by the time they enter Secondary School in Year 7.

Beginning in Prep and Year 1 at Flinders, students learn through the I-care program and then strengthen their learning from Year 2 to Year 6 through the i-Impact program. The two bespoke programs integrate Humanities, Science and Technologies subjects from the Australian Curriculum while using human-centred design thinking to empathise, ideate and prototype innovative solutions to cultural, social and environmental issues.

There is also Flinders’ Wonder curriculum, which builds students’ capacity to be curious, question, research and problem-solve, and to design and pitch ideas.

DESIGN THINKING TO IMPROVE

THE WORLD

Mrs Trudi Edwards, the Head of Primary at Flinders, said it was important to futureproof students for a complex and evolving workforce while ensuring they seek to make a difference in the world.

“Our aim at Flinders Primary School is to inspire and equip students to be confident and capable future thinkers who can empathise with problems and develop solutions,” Mrs Edwards said.

“We want our students to be aware and

empowered people who don't just get the job done, but push boundaries and constantly strive to do well by ‘doing good’ in the world,” she said.

“Our two bespoke programs, I-care and i-Impact, and three immersive design events certainly provide a context for our students to do just that.

“Design thinking is not a bolt-on subject at Flinders, but an underlying ‘bolted-in’ methodology; it is powerful in supporting students’ academic outcomes and character development.

“The immersive design events we provide in Years 1, 3 and 5 are a chance for our students to collaborate and connect with industry experts while putting their knowledge into practice and tapping into their curiosity, creativity and enterprising spirits.”

YEAR 6 STUDENTS SHOWCASE THEIR DESIGN THINKING JOURNEY

As evidence of the exciting outcomes students achieve through the I-care and i-Impact programs, Flinders was the only Primary School in Australia to make the 2024 Activate Grand Finals, an entrepreneurship competition for high school students run by Future Anything.

All Flinders Year 6 students pitch their social enterprise ideas to the Activate judges as the final task in their culminating Year 6 semester-long i-Impact project. The project enables them to be self-guided and leverage all aspects of their design thinking expertise journey established from Prep.

At the 2024 Activate Grand Finals, Flinders was represented by eight students in Year 6, with two of the students, Jesse and Jack, winning Runners Up for their “Safe Surf” prototype, an innovative inflatable rash vest and a GPS wristband that boosts surfer and swimmer safety at the beach.

The Activate award prizes include funding and mentoring support to help students launch their innovative, scalable and sustainable social enterprise ideas out of the classroom and into the real world.

The Year 6 teaching team at Flinders was inspired by the positive outcomes every student experienced through i-Impact, including enhanced engagement, agency and social-emotional competencies, along with a boost in entrepreneurial and enterprising dispositions, skills and knowledge.

IMMERSIVE DESIGN EVENTS AT FLINDERS

Along with an embedded design thinking curriculum in the classroom, students experience three milestone design immersion events.

DESIGN BASE CAMP, YEAR 1 STUDENTS (1-DAY EVENT)

Students explore their foundational knowledge of design thinking and learn the value of teamwork. Last year’s event challenge was to design a farewell cake for the retiring Primary School Counsellor, Dr Alec, and his adorable sidekick, Cooper, the school dog.

DESIGN ASCENT, YEAR 3 STUDENTS (2-DAY EVENT)

Students dive deeper into design thinking and use their creativity and imagination while putting their collaboration skills to the test. The challenge is to create a playground prototype that supports young people’s emotional, social and physical development while also being exciting, challenging and safe.

DESIGN FOR IMPACT SUMMIT, YEAR 5 STUDENTS (3-DAY EVENT)

Students act as future thinkers and design the environments they want to live in while connecting with industry mentors. This year’s Summit challenge is to repurpose the infrastructure from the 2032 Olympic and Paralympics on the Sunshine Coast to benefit the community beyond the events.

ACTIVATE, YEAR 6 STUDENTS (SEMESTER-LONG UNIT)

Year 6 students leverage all aspects of their design thinking journey from Prep to Year 6. The unit concludes with all students pitching their innovative prototypes to industry experts in an attempt to qualify for the National Activate Grand Final event.

Building Emotional Literacy AT MOUNTAIN CREEK STATE SCHOOL

In today’s fast-paced world, children face an array of emotions daily— excitement, frustration, anxiety, and joy. Understanding these emotions and knowing how to manage them is crucial for their development. At Mountain Creek State School, fostering emotional literacy is a key focus, ensuring students have the skills to navigate their feelings, communicate effectively, and develop resilience.

“Our whole-school approach is about equipping children with the language to express their emotions and the strategies to self-regulate,” explains Sean Bennett, Principal at Mountain Creek State School. “We want to give them the tools to manage their emotions,

Are you in the green zone? This colourful, interactive visual resource is designed to prompt children to consider how they are feeling.

whether in the classroom, on the playground, or at home.”

THE POWER OF EMOTIONAL LITERACY

Emotional literacy—the ability to recognise, understand, and express emotions—is

essential for children’s social and emotional development. Mountain Creek State School incorporates structured programs to build these skills, using evidence-based approaches such as the Zones of Regulation framework.

“We use four colours to help children selfidentify how they’re feeling and categorise their emotions,” says Sean. “This helps them recognise their triggers, learn to read facial expressions, understand how their emotions impact others, and choose appropriate strategies to self-regulate.”

The Zones of Regulation framework groups emotions into four categories:

• BLUE ZONE: Low energy emotions such as sadness, tiredness, or boredom.

• GREEN ZONE: A calm,

PRIMARY

focused state ideal for learning and social interactions.

• YELLOW ZONE: Heightened emotions like frustration, excitement, or nervousness requiring self-regulation strategies.

• RED ZONE: Intense emotions such as anger or overwhelming anxiety, where calming techniques are essential.

“There’s no bad zone,” Sean reassures. “But the Green Zone is where we feel our best—calm, ready to learn, and socially engaged.”

TEACHING SELF-REGULATION STRATEGIES

At Mountain Creek State School, students learn strategies tailored to each zone, helping them develop self-awareness and coping skills.

Identifying and labelling emotions

• Teaching children to name their emotions (e.g., happy, frustrated, sad).

• Connecting physical sensations (like a racing heart) to emotions.

• Encouraging open discussions in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.

• Expanding emotional vocabulary to enhance communication skills.

Building skills to manage and understand feelings

• Practising breathing exercises to create calm and reduce overwhelm.

• Grounding techniques, such as focusing on the five senses, can be used to build awareness.

• Role-playing scenarios to rehearse appropriate emotional responses.

• Providing self-soothing strategies, such as safe spaces and calming routines.

• Encouraging reflection through journaling and group discussions.

Encouraging mindfulness and relaxation

• Incorporating yoga and guided relaxation activities.

• Teaching mindful breathing for improved focus and self-awareness.

• Using sensory tools like calming jars or stress balls.

• Promoting gratitude practices to shift focus from stress to positivity.

• Allowing quiet time for children to reflect and recharge.

Supporting emotional regulation

• Establishing routines that create emotional stability.

• Teaching children to pause and respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

• Building resilience by framing mistakes as learning opportunities.

• Encouraging collaborative problem-solving.

• Creating an inclusive environment where all emotions are acknowledged and validated.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: A WHOLE-SCHOOL COMMITMENT

At Mountain Creek State School, emotional literacy isn’t confined to structured lessons— it’s woven into daily life.

“Our commitment extends beyond students,” Sean explains. “We provide teacher workshops to help educators with their own regulation so they can better support their students.”

Mindfulness activities are embedded into classroom routines, helping students develop self-awareness and emotional resilience throughout the day. Yoga groups, led by Joeline from Sunshine Hope, offer children the opportunity to practice movement and relaxation techniques that support their overall well-being. Additionally, mindful movement sessions encourage body awareness and provide a structured way for children to release built-up tension.

Movement breaks are incorporated into daily classroom schedules to further support selfregulation, allowing students to reset and refocus their energy when needed. Quality literature is also vital, sparking meaningful discussions about emotions and empathy. Using books as conversation starters, teachers help students connect with characters’ experiences and better understand their feelings.

EQUIPPING CHILDREN FOR LIFE

By prioritising emotional literacy, Mountain Creek State School is setting children up for

success—not just academically but also socially and emotionally.

“When children have the skills to understand and manage their emotions, they’re more engaged in learning, build stronger relationships, and develop resilience for life’s challenges,” says Sean. “It’s about giving them the tools to thrive now and in the future.”

For parents, supporting emotional literacy at home can be as simple as talking about feelings, modelling self-regulation strategies, and encouraging mindfulness practices. As Mountain Creek State School demonstrates, when children learn to manage their emotions, they develop confidence, empathy, and the skills needed to navigate the world with resilience.

TUTORING

MORE THAN JUST ACADEMIC SUCCESS

While improved grades are a great outcome, Sharon believes tutoring offers much more than that. “Our children were above-average, mostly B-grade learners, and now they’re mostly all A grades. But we’ve really appreciated their increased ability to support each other, stretch each other, and ask for help,” Sharon says.

At Numberworks’nWords, the focus isn’t just on academics—it’s on helping students experience success and feel happy at school. Not every child will pursue university, but all students benefit from increased self-belief and a stronger academic foundation. “Results come from this,” Rochelle notes.

For Sharon’s family, tutoring has also become a positive and enjoyable part of their routine. “I think it’s fun, it moves quickly, there are pattern interrupts, and there are young tutors that the kids can relate to,” she says. “These elements keep students engaged and motivated to learn.”

MAKING TUTORING A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT

Many parents who commit to tutoring for the long haul see it as an essential part of their children’s education, something they budget for because they see its value.

the growth in confidence and gaining new skill sets for studying, researching and asking questions. Their academic focus has grown, and their dreams and goals for the future have expanded. The better grades are just the icing on the cake,” she shares.

“Teachers can only do so much. They can’t customise for each learning style or cater for every question,” Sharon adds.

The impact of long-term tutoring is evident in the success stories from Numberworks’nWords. Rochelle shares the journey of one student who was shy, anxious, and afraid of making mistakes. “He had lost confidence and didn’t

want to attend school. This student is now in Year 9 and is thriving. He still loves coming to tutoring because he knows it makes a difference to how he feels in the classroom.”

Another family with three children initially joined tutoring to support their studies. “They were doing ‘okay’ at school and passing. Now, six years on, they are all straight-A students. The eldest has just been accepted into a double degree at university,” Rochelle says. These success stories highlight that tutoring isn’t just about grades—it’s about building lifelong learning skills and confidence.

“Like any coaching in life, tutoring improves skill levels, lessens stress and offers better outcomes, says Sharon. “Just like success coaching, it’s a no-brainer. We want our kids to be the best version of themselves.”

Long-term tutoring isn’t just about improving grades—it’s about nurturing confidence, fostering independence, and equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in life. As Sharon puts it, “We’re forever grateful. I’d be the worst tutor!”

Whether a child needs support to catch up, maintain their progress, or get ahead, tutoring provides a structured and supportive environment where they can thrive. As Rochelle’s experience shows, consistent tutoring over the years can turn struggling students into confident, capable learners who are excited about their future.

“If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, then please call us or book a free assessment,” says Rochelle. “We look forward to supporting your child and family with the school journey.”

PLAYFUL FOUNDATIONS MERGING SCHOOL READINESS WITH STRUCTURED LITERACY

School readiness means more than learning letters and numbers—it’s about nurturing curious, confident, and capable young minds. But one often overlooked ingredient is early exposure to structured literacy, woven seamlessly into playful, meaningful experiences.

Structured literacy is not about flashcards or rigid lessons. It’s a research-backed approach that supports how children learn to read most effectively—through explicit, systematic instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. When introduced in the early years, through a play-based lens, it strengthens foundational language skills while preserving the joy and creativity that make childhood so magical.

Singing rhyming songs, blending sounds in a game of Bingo or Simon Says, and going on a "letter sound hunt" outdoors all support structured literacy goals in ways that feel fun, active, and developmentally appropriate.

Too often, we wait until children fall behind before providing this support. But early intervention is prevention. By embedding structured literacy into playbased learning, we give all children a stronger foundation for future success. We know that strong early literacy skills are a predictor of future academic success. And we know that play is how young children learn best. So let’s stop asking whether school readiness should focus on academics or play. Let’s do both— intentionally, joyfully, and with purpose.

HOW HIDDEN KEY LITERACY SPECIALISTS SUPPORT STRUGGLING LEARNERS

When a child starts falling behind at school, it can be hard for parents to know where to turn. Many children need the right kind of support to thrive, whether it’s difficulty with reading, writing, or staying organised. That’s where Hidden Key

Literacy Specialists step in—offering tailored, research-based programs designed to help children rediscover confidence and capability in the classroom.

Founded by educational specialist Natalie Pryor, Hidden Key provides individualised

tutoring and intervention programs that focus on each child’s strengths while gently targeting their areas of need. Sessions are engaging and child-friendly, using multisensory techniques backed by the latest research in the Science of Reading and programs like Cracking the ABC Code.

Every student begins with a comprehensive assessment, ensuring their learning plan is customised and effective. While literacy is a core focus, Hidden Key also offers general primary tutoring, including support with time management and study skills—perfect for kids who need help staying on track.

Natalie is also the co-founder of Hidden Key Creations. Together, with a child psychologist, Natalie has created a range of products that focus on improving your child’s confidence and deepening connections. The Confidence Code, Conversation Tower and Conversation Cards are all available at their website: hiddenkeycreations.com.

For those seeking a deeper understanding of their child’s learning needs, Hidden Key now also provides psychoeducational assessments (WIAT-III), including diagnosis of learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

✓ Balance between fun and learning

Soon, this ritual will become even more intentional, as the centre plans to install permanent outdoor dining furniture, turning this nourishing routine into a long-term feature of daily life. The connection between environment and emotional security is a powerful one—and one that Sanctuary Buderim embraces with intention.

CREATIVE CONFIDENCE IN KINDERGARTEN

In the Kindergarten program, emotional resilience is paired with growing cognitive capability and creative identity. Children are entering the final stage before Prep, and their sense of self is beginning to take a clear and confident shape.

Guided by experienced Early Childhood Teacher Kristel, the Kindergarten room is a lively blend of purposeful learning, selfexpression, and social collaboration. The children are immersed in mark-making and imaginary play, where early writing concepts, such as line formation, are explored alongside storytelling, drawing, and role-playing.

But these activities aren’t just about literacy—they’re about emotional language. When a child draws their “angry” face in charcoal or builds a pretend hospital for a sad teddy, they’re processing emotions, working through empathy, and building emotional literacy in deeply meaningful ways.

Popular group activities—like constructing

cubby houses and elaborate magnetic tile structures—add another layer to resiliencebuilding. These experiences require negotiation, cooperation, and perseverance. Children are encouraged to listen to others, navigate disappointment, and keep trying. Through it all, educators provide scaffolding and space, allowing children to experience struggle without fear and success without pressure.

A LONG DAYCARE KINDERGARTEN MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE

Unlike stand-alone sessional Kindergarten models, Sanctuary Buderim’s Kindergarten program is integrated within a long day care environment—a difference that offers deeper support, greater consistency, and stronger emotional security.

Children have more time to revisit concepts, to build strong peer and educator relationships, and to experience learning at their own pace. There is no abrupt shift at midday, nor is there a transition to unfamiliar staff or environments. Instead, children are surrounded by familiar faces and steady rhythms from morning to afternoon, five days a week.

This model also strengthens the bridge between home and early learning. Families and educators work closely together, sharing insights and strategies, celebrating developmental wins, and building a shared understanding of each child’s unique emotional needs and strengths. The result? Children who are not only

academically ready for Prep, but also emotionally and socially ready.

A CONTINUUM OF CARE, A CULTURE OF BELONGING

While this article celebrates the transformative years between three and five, it’s important to acknowledge that the foundation for school readiness begins in the nursery. From the very beginning, Sanctuary Buderim provides infants and toddlers with consistent, nurturing care that lays the groundwork for future resilience. However, it is during the Pre-Kindergarten to Kindergarten years that these early lessons begin to bloom. Children begin to self-regulate, leading their own play, collaborating, creating, and coping. These are not just skills for school— they are skills for life.

THRIVING NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE

At Sanctuary Buderim, the goal is not just to prepare children for school, but to prepare them for the whole, beautiful, sometimes challenging experience of being human.

Emotional resilience doesn’t develop overnight. It’s cultivated slowly, over years of caring relationships, creative opportunities, and consistent support. It’s grown in worm farms and block towers, in painted emotions and shared picnics. It’s in every “I did it myself” and every “Can you help me?” that echoes through the centre each day. And when children leave Sanctuary Buderim for their first day of Prep, they don’t just carry with them a backpack and lunchbox—they carry with them the strength to try, the courage to speak up, and the inner calm to navigate whatever comes next.

Because here, resilience is more than a program. It’s part of the culture. And it grows stronger every day.

SMALL GROUPS. BIG IMPACT. Each group includes no more than 12 children with two adult mentors, allowing for deep, personal connections. Like Montessori education, children are grouped in mixedage brackets, encouraging peer learning and meeting children where they are.

“The 1:6 mentor-to-child ratio is critical,” Ian shares. “It creates the space for truly meaningful connection and care.”

A COMMUNITY FOR LIFE

The transformation that unfolds in these sessions is profound. Children who arrive shy or disengaged leave with dirt under their nails, light in their eyes, and stories tumbling from their mouths. They develop confidence, self-awareness, resilience, empathy, and a grounded sense of place in the world—a community where they belong.

“The aim is to reconnect the full circle,” says Ian. “Teenagers grow into mentors themselves—guided by the same values and practices that once inspired them as children. In doing so, they give back to the next generation, becoming part of a living, evolving community.”

Elders also play a vital role. “There are incredible elders in our communities—full of wisdom, presence, and life experience—but that connection to the younger generation has

been lost in many places. It’s a broken link,” says Ian. “We need to recreate that connection. Something magical happens when young children spend time with elders and elders are welcomed into their world. There’s a mutual awakening—health, vibrancy, and deep purpose begin to flow both ways.”

In a world that moves fast, it’s a powerful pause—and a gentle return. Because, it’s not just another program. It’s a return to something essential, something our children (and us as parents) have been quietly craving.

Unlocking

Easy, budget-friendly play that builds early literacy in little ones.

Learning through play

For young children, the most powerful learning happens through play — and the best part is, you don’t need fancy toys or expensive gadgets to make it happen.

“Play is how children make sense of the world,” says Karen Gawen from Sunshine Coast Libraries. “When they explore, create, and imagine, they’re developing essential life skills — and it all begins at home.”

From problem-solving and communication to motor skills and emotional development, play lays the foundation for everything a child will go on to learn. And with a few everyday

items, parents can easily create meaningful play experiences that help their little ones grow.

Here are Karen’s top budget-friendly ways to help kids learn through play:

1 PAINTBRUSH AND WATER BUCKET

Give your child an old paintbrush and a bucket of water, and let them ‘paint’ on the fence, patio, or pavement. Drawing helps develop fine motor skills, encourages creativity, and builds concentration. For little ones who are still learning to speak, it’s also a wonderful way to communicate.

2 SCAVENGER HUNT

Set up a simple scavenger hunt in your home or backyard. It can be a written list, or for those little ones still developing their literacy skills, pictures on your phone or tablet can work just as well. You can list everyday items, colours, or shapes for them to find or make it trickier by hiding specific objects for them to seek. This kind of activity boosts observation skills and memory — and it’s a lot of fun!

3 BUILD A FORT

Whether it’s inside or outside, kids love being in enclosed, cosy places! Use blankets, furniture or garden stakes to build a secret place for them to read or play. These fun spaces are great for quiet time, reading, or pretend play, all of which support emotional development and storytelling skills.

4 CARDBOARD BOX ADVENTURES

A cardboard box might be the most underrated toy ever. Big or small, boxes can become spaceships, race cars, or submarines. With tape, pencils, paper plates for wheels, or spare cardboard, you can help your child bring their wildest ideas to life. This kind of open-ended play nurtures creativity, design thinking, and perseverance.

5 BACKYARD OBSTACLE COURSE

Create a DIY obstacle course with items you already have: hoops, boxes, chalk, or even masking tape. Challenge your child to crawl under, hop over, or balance across different elements. Not only is it great exercise, but it also enhances coordination, spatial awareness, and confidence. Set a time trial, or see if they can design their own obstacle course. Not only are not only problemsolving and developing motor skills and muscles, but it’s also a fantastic way to wear them out.

6 MESSY PLAY

Make playdough from ingredients in your cupboard. Set up a sensory table with containers of jelly, cold spaghetti noodles or rice. Conduct some science experiments with water and food colouring. Messy play stimulates the senses, encourages curiosity, and builds resilience. Plus, part of being a kid is the absolute joy of getting very, very messy!

Y Schools

QLD

is reengaging students in Years 7–12 through alternative learning pathways.

Not everyone fits into the mainstream system. However, everyone deserves an education. Y Schools Queensland (formerly YMCA School) offers tailored educational programs for secondary students who would benefit from an alternative learning environment and a high level of wrap-around wellbeing support.

With 11 campuses across Queensland including Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Bundaberg, Y Schools Queensland supports students on their future pathways. They focus on taking the time to provide individual support for students who would otherwise struggle in the mainstream education system.

SECONDARY EDUCATION REIMAGINED

At Y Schools Queensland, education is reimagined to meet young people where they are—and to help them discover what’s possible.

The school’s THRIVE framework is central to its approach, placing relationships, emotional safety, and student voice at the heart of the learning journey. It’s not just about surviving school—it’s about equipping students to thrive in life.

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH

The multi-disciplinary program at Y Schools takes a holistic approach to education, focusing on each individual as a whole person. The three-pillar methodology ensures students:

• are supported physically and mentally, with a wellbeing-first approach

• are confident and independent, and in charge of their future destinies

• foster a healthy relationship with lifelong learning, in and out of school.

This well-rounded methodology supports students into becoming happy, healthy, successful and contributing members of our community.

LEARNING THAT COUNTS

Y Schools Queensland delivers the Australian Curriculum with flexibility and purpose. Students work toward meaningful learning goals, including Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) pathways. Students are supported every step of the way and empowered to succeed on their own terms.

REAL-WORLD SKILLS

Y Schools also offers a suite of Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs, which provide practical, hands-on skills in areas like trades, hospitality, beauty, community services and business, opening real-world career opportunities post-school.

OVER FIVE YEARS, THROUGH THE UPS AND DOWNS, THE STAFF’S UNWAVERING SUPPORT HELPED HER GROW INTO A CONFIDENT YOUNG WOMAN.

For one parent, the impact has been lifechanging:

“When my daughter first came to Y Schools Queensland, she was a young girl struggling with anxiety and unable to speak to anyone. Over five years, through the ups and downs, the staff’s unwavering support helped her grow into a confident young woman.

Watching her deliver her final speech as School Leader was one of the proudest moments of my life. We wouldn’t have reached this milestone without the care, patience, and belief of the incredible Y Schools team.”

ONE BOY, INFINITE OPPORTUNITIES

Raising wonderful men at Nudgee College

What makes a school more than just a place of learning? For generations of boys, St Joseph’s Nudgee College has been the answer. Established in 1891 and steeped in tradition, this Catholic boys’ school in Brisbane’s north is a second home for 315 boarders and over 1,700 day students. But beyond the impressive facilities and rich history lies something more profound: a community where boys are not only educated but transformed into young men of character and compassion.

With a philosophy of ‘One boy, infinite opportunities’, Nudgee College offers far more than academic excellence. It opens doors to countless opportunities, from cultural pursuits and sports to social justice initiatives and vocational training. This school doesn’t just prepare boys for the future; it equips them to shape it.

A PLACE TO BELONG

For Principal Scott Thomson, the secret to Nudgee College’s enduring appeal lies in its vibrant community and sense of belonging.

“People talk about Nudgee ‘getting under your skin,’ and it really does,” says Principal Thomson.

From the moment you step through the gates, the College exudes an irresistible warmth that naturally draws you in.

“Visitors often comment on how welcoming

and respectful our students are,” Principal Thomson says, a testament to the school’s culture of inclusion and connection.

This sense of belonging is most clearly demonstrated in the central positioning of boarding in the College, both physically and spiritually. Because the boarding village isn’t isolated from the school, it sits in the middle of the campus. Day students and boarders pass through its central hub daily, making it at the heart of life at Nudgee.

This integration nurtures a seamless bond between boys, as the College welcomes boarders from far and wide, whether from rural Australia, metropolitan Brisbane and Gold Coast, or overseas.

AWARD-WINNING BOARDING

Queensland’s oldest Catholic boarding school, Nudgee College, is rich in history. Yet it continues to innovate, earning the coveted award of Australian Boarding School of the Year in 2024.

“It was a wonderful recognition of the great work happening in our boarding village,” Mr Thomson reflects. “We’ve modernised significantly while honouring our heritage.”

The Bathersby Boarding Village is genuinely a home away from home. Individual rooms provide a sanctuary for the boys to call their own. The dedicated staff, including the Heads of the Boarding House, House Mums and Supervisors, create a welcoming and supportive

environment. The on-campus health centre is staffed with highly skilled nurses around the clock, and doctors, dentists, podiatrists, and physiotherapists are on call.

Through the Reach for the Stars academic tutoring program, boarders are given every opportunity to thrive academically. Teachers across a range of subjects assist boys with ongoing homework and assignments and prepare them for exams.

Students enjoy various activities and outings outside the campus as part of their balanced lifestyle, organised by the dedicated Recreation Coordinator. These include trips to theme parks, sporting matches, cinemas, shopping centres, laser skirmishes, hiking, beach outings, futsal competitions, and more. Yet, at the heart of boarding are the lifelong friendships that develop between fellow boarders. Boys become brothers and build bonds that lead to endless possibilities beyond graduation.

INFINITE OPPORTUNITIES

At the College, every boy is encouraged to discover his passions and potential. With one of the widest curriculums in Queensland, the College offers diverse academic and vocational pathways.

“One boy might dream of being a lawyer, whilst another wants to pursue a career in horticulture or the performing arts,” Mr Thomson explains. “We cater to both—and everything in between.”

“IT TAKES A VILLAGE” WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO RAISE A KID. BUT WHAT IF YOUR VILLAGE IS NOT ON STANDBY JUST DOWN THE ROAD?

hesitantly joined, “I’ll probably rage quit this in a week”, I told my husband.

How wrong I was.

What started as an online community of mums across the country with no idea, quickly became a source of information sharing and just general comfort during a weird and wonderful period of my life. There are mums in Victoria, WA and one on Norfolk Island. I tried to do ‘mums groups’ in real life, but I struggled to find the right fit. I was a 35-yearold working mum getting coffee with 18-yearolds having their third kid living with their parents. We shared so many things and could relate on some level, but it wasn’t the same as being around my real village back home or the community created in that group.

FINDING YOUR baby village

The internet has always had the rap of being a bit of a dodgy place. Whenever someone mentioned “chat rooms” as a normal means of friend-finding, I’d struggle to hide the visible cringe. Why can’t these people find friends the ‘normal’ way? This is something my friends and I believed to be true, until we had kids.

The saying goes, “It takes a village” when you’re trying to raise a kid. But what if your village is not on standby just down the road? Maybe they don’t have or even like kids, or what if your village is not in your life anymore,

for whatever reason? Well, as I discovered while living a million miles away from mine, the internet became one of the most vital tools in my new motherhood journey.

As I was fast approaching my due date with my first baby, I was on the classic, internet research deep-dive for preparing when I stumbled upon a bunch of Facebook groups. “Babies Due August 2024” popped up. Surely, I could find answers to my questions and use this as a source of information during my journey. A week after being in the group, a chat popped up and I

My online mums group have held a few meet-ups in real life since we joined. I’ve yet been able to attend one, but we have one planned for later this year. It’s definitely daunting to meet people in the real world from online, but I’m confident they’re the real thing.

Since moving to the Sunny Coast, my friends and family are much closer, but even that hour or so drive does have its challenges. I want to take my daughter to Sea Life and the Ginger Factory. I want to know which local daycare has the best educators and recommendations for good babysitters. In comes Kids on the Coast and other incredible resources to find your local mum meet-ups and events you can dip your toe into to meet other like-minded women.

While I’m yet to go IRL with any mums in the group, and by gosh would I be open to some meet-and-greets, these communities play such a vital role in providing mental support for mothers and I couldn’t even imagine the position I’d be in today had I not had them to lean on.

HEALTH

WHY PILATES IS THE smartest postnatal move you can make

You spent nine months growing a human. Your body expanded, shifted, softened, and adapted in the most extraordinary way. So, why do we expect women to “bounce back” in mere weeks?

As a seasoned Pilates instructor and a mum myself, I’ll say this with confidence: Pilates is one of the most intelligent, respectful, and effective ways to move after birth.

But before we talk about rebuilding strength, let me say this: you don’t need to rush. You don’t need to “get your body back.” What you do need is kindness, especially to yourself.

Early motherhood is raw, relentless and wildly beautiful. It’s a time when your world

revolves around someone else, and it’s easy to lose touch with your own needs. That’s why being gentle with yourself is essential. You deserve compassion, rest, and support. But you also deserve strength. Not the kind that’s fuelled by pressure or perfection, but the kind that helps you feel capable in your body again.

Because when you feel strong, you cope better. You move better. You show up as your best self — for your baby, your family, and most importantly, for you.

In the postpartum period, your body is still under the influence of relaxin — the hormone that softens joints and tissues in preparation for delivery. It doesn’t disappear overnight.

PILATES IS ONE OF THE MOST INTELLIGENT, RESPECTFUL, AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MOVE AFTER BIRTH.

Your body needs time, patience, and the right kind of movement to rebuild strength and stability safely.

This is where Pilates shines. It’s low-impact but highly effective, focusing on deep core muscles — like your transverse abdominis and pelvic floor — that are often stretched or weakened during pregnancy. Pilates helps you reconnect from the inside out, restoring postural alignment, core control, and full-body confidence.

Unlike high-intensity workouts that push you to “go hard,” Pilates meets you where you are. It’s intentional, supportive, and empowering — reminding you that while your body has changed, your strength is still there.

Motherhood can feel like a storm. Let Pilates be your anchor.

If you’re a new mum — or know one — we’d love to welcome you at Club Pilates Sippy Downs. No pressure. No shame. Just smart movement and a community that honours the incredible work your body has done.

Your body’s done something extraordinary. Now let’s honour it — one breath, one movement at a time.

RAW SNICKERS BARS

4 Ingredients founder and Sunshine Coast foody powerhouse
Kim McCosker’s raw Snickers bars are the perfect afternoon treat. They are gluten-free and, with just four ingredients, are super easy to prepare. It’s a win-win!

INGREDIENTS

• 12 Medjool dates (60g), pitted

• ¼ cup (78g) natural peanut butter

• 2 tbsp. (22g) raw peanuts

• 100g Lactose-Free, Gluten-Free chocolate

METHOD

1. Using a small, sharp knife, cut a slit in each of the dates.

2. Remove stones.

3. Into each place a little peanut butter, into which, press three whole peanuts.

4. Repeat until all ingredients are gone.

5. Next, break the chocolate into a large microwave-safe bowl and melt in 30-second increments until nice and smooth.

6. Dip each date to completely cover.

7. Place onto a paper lined tray and refrigerate to set.

Optional: I used a ¼ cup (50g) walnut meal mixed with 1 tsp. (8g) honey to stuff several sensational dates.

BOOKS

Don’t Trust Fish

DON’T TRUST FISH! is an absurdly laugh-out-loud picture book about the villainy of fish. Why, dear reader, must you NEVER EVER trust fish? They spend all their time in the water where we can’t see them. Some are as big as a bus—that is not okay. We don’t know what they’re teaching in their “schools.” They are likely plotting our doom. This nature-guide-gone-wrong is a hilarious, off-the-rails exploration of the seemingly innocent animals that live in the water.

The Kid Who Fell Through Time

Angus never cared about history—until he accidentally falls into a shopping trolley and time-travels with Marge, a cheesecounter lady from the future. Suddenly, he’s exploring Roman markets, meeting Shakespeare, and making friends in Ancient Egypt—all while fleeing the Evil Emperor Kragg from the 99th Century! Can Angus and his new friends make it out of the past unscathed, and, more importantly, is camel cheese really as bad as you imagine? Only time will tell!

Kittens Do Not Care for Baths

Dad says it’s time for a bath, but Maya is certain that kittens do not need baths. In fact, this curious kitten would much rather hunt for prey and climb trees all night than wash herself and get ready for bed. Can this feisty kitten be coaxed into starting her night-time routine?

A delightful story from Brisbane author Ali Rutstein about a little girl who doesn’t want a bath and her dad who tries all sorts of techniques to entice her to the bubble-filled wonder. In the end, he cannot get her out!
