F

ood and travel are two words that have completely changed in meaning over the last 18 months. Instead of lengthy flights and currency changes, travel now means exploring the many wonderful corners of Queensland. Since dining out was subject to restrictions, there’s a renewed sense of appreciation for eating out as a family and supporting the local eateries on our own doorstep. Unexpectedly, these shifts also mean the experiences of food and travel now exist in a far more vibrant and meaningful way. It’s less about seeing sights and more about seeing each other. This is because we now use these experiences to do what really matters— to reconnect. Obviously, being parents of wriggly children with zero attention span, we

still want to do these things without too much hard work (or the risk of epic meltdowns). And so, to make this important shared family time simple, affordable, and enjoyable for everyone, this issue is all about local food and travel for families. #supportlocal We’ve got family friendly resorts, dining options, the best spots for kids to eat free and loads of local things to do. Everything you need to take that next family holiday without any of the hassle (or cost) of getting on a plane. Because, let’s be honest… when you live in paradise, why go anywhere else?

FIVE + KNUX REL AUNCHES

fter a brief hiatus changing hands, kids urban streetwear store Five + Knux has relaunched with a fab refresh and stunning updated range. Offering the perfect combination of online shopping, design and creativity with some edgy attitude and cheeky playfulness, taking over the business was the ideal ‘covid pivot’ for event manager Renee Schmidt. “Choosing brands and key pieces in each range to stock, the styling, the mixing and matching of brands, patterns pieces, taking photos and creating fun social media posts—it’s great fun!” Renee said. “And it is true, when a small business gets an order in,

we really do do a happy dance!” With an urban, edgy and streetwear vibe, Five + Knux is all about giving kids a chance to express themselves. “It’s mostly unisex, so generally all our pieces can be worn by anyone,” Renee said. “We have a whole lot of attitude. We want kids to have the freedom to express their own style and have fun and be confident in who they are.” “With sustainability in mind it also works well as we stock great quality brands so we’re trying to bring back the ‘hand-me-down’ trend with our pieces—then it won’t matter if you’re wearing your big brother’s jeans or your little sister’s hoodie.” www.fiveandknux.com

FOR FLINDERS

he Primary playground at Matthew Flinders Anglican College is even more vibrant, colourful and playful thanks to renowned Australian artist Joel Moore, also known as Mulga the Artist. Mulga visited Flinders on the Sunshine Coast as Artist in Residence to paint a large-scale art mural and mentor students from Prep to Year 6. Known for his unique Australian creations and signature style of intricate line work and bright colours, Mulga’s creations grace walls and objects across the world. The mural features local native plants and birds as well as citrus trees and Erol the Emu resident at the College’s on-site

farm. Also captured in the mural are the kangaroos that sometimes venture onto the Flinders sports ovals at sunrise and sunset. Then there is a cartoon of explorer Matthew Flinders himself, alongside his cat ‘Trim’ who is wearing Mulga’s signature style sunglasses. Mulga created the mural with the help of some students in Year 6 who assisted with the actual painting stage. Head of Primary Mrs Trudi Edwards said the College was delighted to have Mulga on campus to fuel students’ creativity. “We value rich creative experiences at Flinders, and it was wonderful to see the passion and skills Mulga shared with our students,” Trudi said.

water park, ice skating rink, kids club, cafe, retail shops, deluxe family rooms and an adultsonly pool and bar opening this Christmas, all situated within one resort and just a few short minute’s walk from some of the Gold Coast’s best beaches. What could this place possibly be? Paradise Resort on the Gold Coast has just undergone major renovations as part of its 2021 post-COVID glow-up. And here at Kids on the Coast HQ, we just can’t get enough of it! The project has included a captivating upgrade of the resort’s main lobby, complete with a jungle gym, sleek marble walls and stylish decor. Before you even unpack, you’ll find yourself relaxing as you sink into the lobby lounges, soaking up the view of the tropical aquarium behind the front desk. Once you’ve checked in, it’s off to your room in the brand-new deluxe accommodation wing ‘Dusty’s Digs’, a tribute to the iconic Aussie adventurer and one of four resort mascots, Dusty. From there, the choices are endless, rock climbing or laser tag? Perhaps some snacks from one of four new dining venues? Or if you are staying later in the year you can utilise the kids club and sneak off to the adults-only pool bar that is currently under construction and due to be open this Christmas. No matter your mood, personal style or family size, one thing is for sure, the whole family is going to love the new-look Paradise Resort! However, while this multi-award-winning family resort may be basking in the glitz and glamour of a 10 million dollar renovation, behind the scenes there’s a whole different story of what could have been. At the start of 2020, the future for Paradise Resort looked bleak. Amidst a global pandemic and an infrastructure boom, it was set for demolition to make way for a new apartment tower, just another to

After having been an integral part of the Gold Coast tourism scene for nearly 40 years, and having hosted generations of Australians throughout its time, hotel owner Dr Jerry Schwartz knew this couldn’t possibly be the end. So, Jerry and the team at the Schwartz family group put their heads and their pockets together to come up with Plan B—a great big do-over. This refurbishment is revolutionising the meaning of a one-stop-shop holiday destination. Together, Jerry and the resort’s dedicated general manager Mr David Brook, pride themselves on the experience they offer. A place they believe is not somewhere simply to just stay, but a place to visit and experience together as a family. With endless kids club adventures, two giant water parks, a lagoon pool, a large heated spa and a daily entertainment program, you’ll be lucky if you even see the kids! Making the escape to the newly established adults-only poolside bar and cafe all the more appealing, because once it opens, all you’ll need to do is sit back,

relax and replenish. There’s never been a better time to take a staycation right here in Southeast Queensland, as Queensland tourism is revamping its $28 billion dollar industry. With world-renowned theme parks, glorious beaches, a stunning hinterland and some of the state’s best national parks, Mr Brook believes that locals don’t get enough time to explore their own backyard—a backyard that other Aussies travel thousands of miles for. “No other state in Australia has weather like this, especially as we come into winter. he wonderful Horizon Festival returns to the Sunshine Coast this August, bringing 10 days of arts-fuelled fun to families across southeast Quensland. Top of our must-see list at the 2021 festival has to be Circus Wonderland - A Mermaid’s Tale. Held at the spectacular Wonderland Spiegeltent, that will be erected in Cotton Tree Park for the duration of the festival as festival HQ, this captivating mix of acrobatics, aerials and comedy brings to life mermaids, sailors and plenty of funny characters from the sea. We were lucky enough to chat to Maddy Burleigh, who plays the mermaid in the show, to find out more about circus life and what it’s like to be a ‘real life’ mermaid.

How long have you been with Circus Wonderland and what was your path to joining the circus? I have been with Circus Wonderland for three years now. I stumbled upon circus classes one day and tried the aerials. After that I tried everything I could and found what I enjoyed most: acrobatics with the sailor and gracefully flying in the air on the aerials!

What do you think kids will love most about the upcoming show?

beginning, when I meet the sailor and it’s love at first sight and we perform a beautiful perch act together.

Any extra bits to watch out for? Keep an eye on our lifesaver Barry! That’s all I can say!

Any tips for families coming to the show? Barry tends to be very clumsy, so the front row is a potential splash zone! Also bubbles don’t taste as good as they look!

I think that not only the kids but the adults will love how fun and funny the show is!

What makes this such a great show for families?

What is your favourite part of A Mermaid’s Tale?

The show is enjoyable, engaging, and interactive for all ages. It will have you laughing and on the edge of your seats with the incredible talents of the whole cast.

My favourite part of the show is at the

The mini Coasters were so blown away that we were chatting with a mermaid, they also insisted on asking their own questions… and of course they stole the show! #ImOutOfAJob What is your favourite thing about being a mermaid? Adventuring through the sea, looking for lost treasure in old sunken ships! Playing with the sea creatures, and swimming with my dolphin friends is definitely one of my favourite things to do. But also not having to add salt to any of my food!

What is the hardest thing about being a mermaid? Getting my land legs and having to remember how to walk again. It’s also very hard to keep my home clean when bottles and nets keep getting washed up.

“Mermaids must drink lots of water to stay hydrated and take lots of baths so we don’t dry out!”

As you are a mermaid in the circus, can you do lots of cool tricks?

If we are not near the sea we have a large pool I can relax in.

I can do lots of cool tricks not only in the water but on other humans and even in the air!

How do you go between land and sea? I was born with my mermaid tail. When you are old enough you are able to shed your tail for human legs for a short time, but we must drink lots of water to stay hydrated and take lots of baths so we don’t dry out!

Do you live in the ocean, or does the circus have a pool? We mostly perform near the ocean so I can go home when I lose my land legs.

How can I be a mermaid when I grow up? With a little bit of mermaid magic and lots of swimming practice you may just start to grow your own tail!

What do you do on your day off? I love exploring the human land and meeting all of the friendly people! But I also enjoy searching for sea shells and pearls in the ocean on my days off. MORE INFO

A five-star experience for the whole family

The new jewel ON THE

GOLD COAST By Josephine Agostino

I

A TROPICAL HAVEN IN THE HEART OF SURFERS PARADISE

f you think you know all that the Gold Coast has to offer, then think again. While Queensland slowly opened back up to the rest of Australia last year, one iconic hotel was quietly undergoing an incredible $35 million transformation—and the result is every traveller’s dream. The Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort has reopened as the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa, and it’s already impressed families around the country with its amazing offerings. The five-star property, right in the heart of Surfers Paradise, has 223 beautifully redesigned rooms and suites with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean right around to the Gold Coast hinterland. As the very first JW Marriott in Australia, no expense has been spared making little travellers welcome and giving their parents the relaxing break they deserve. When guests check in, children are gifted their own package with an activity book, crayons, and a schedule of all of the family activities that week. And there’s no shortage of those. The Family by JW program caters to families who are creative, active or culinaryminded. The complimentary activities include scavenger hunts, fish feeding at the Lagoon Pool and use of sporting equipment on the basketball and tennis courts. Pre-booked activities start from just $20, and include junior mixology sessions, Mini Minoso sushi classes, pizza making in Citrique restaurant, and herb planting in the

JW Garden. The hotel also has a games room, open from 8am to 10pm, which has arcade-style amusements for all ages. While the beach is only a leisurely 300-metre walk away, families can happily spend hours in the Marriott’s famous water attractions, which include a heated freshwater resort pool, slides, hot-tub, and the ever-impressive saltwater lagoon surrounded by rocky grottos and waterfalls. The four-metre deep lagoon will delight kids—and adults—of all ages, with its reef and more than 300 tropical fish that can be explored with on-site snorkel and sea scooter hire. The lagoon’s sandy shoreline even has a silicone-base that prevents it from sticking, how great is that! And because this is a five-star experience, there’s no need to bring your own towel for the sun loungers and cabanas dotted around the pool’s lush tropical gardens. When it comes to mealtimes, children are well-catered for at the Marriott’s four restaurants and bars. Not only are they all equipped with high chairs and children’s utensils, the menus are both kid-friendly and reflect the hotel’s farm-to-table program, using produce—including edible flowers— from the onsite garden. For those that prefer to eat poolside, they’ve taken care of that too, with a retro food van serving delicious Asian-inspired street food. Now that’s a holiday both parents and kids can rave about!

MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE RE-OPENS

N

orth Star Holiday Resort at Hastings Point has reopened its Marine Discovery Centre following a million-dollar transformation. Featuring a showcase of world-class marine and coastal science displays, state-of-the-art light and sound technology and interactive digital terminals, the upgraded Marine Discovery Centre is designed to inspire and educate, and help people of all ages to understand and care for the aquatic environment. Located above the new adult leisure centre at North Star Holiday Resort, the centre also has a purpose-built space for lectures, seminars, social and business events, and school trips. Since the original centre opened in 2008, thousands of school groups from across Southeast Queensland and New South Wales, along with holidaymakers at North Star Holiday Resort, have visited the centre to learn about the importance of protecting the marine environment. And with the refurbishment complete, the centre is now set to continue to be a leading destination for marine education for many years to come.

THE HISTORY OF THE NORTH STAR HOLIDAY RESORT MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE The Marine Discovery Centre’s story dates back 60 years, to when Marine Biologist Ted Brambleby first began collecting marine specimens. The passionate environmentalist first shared his displays

28

from the boot of his car in the ‘60s, driving coastal roads and stopping to educate beachgoers, scuba divers, snorkellers and like-minded ocean lovers along the way. In 1999, Ted joined forces with teacher and business partner Kerrie Trees and created a unique opportunity for camps and day visits for students, teachers, community groups and holidaymakers at Hastings Point Caravan Park. In 2008, proprietors of North Star, Ian and Diana Beadel, allocated space in their resort’s ‘Seascape Building’ for Ted and Kerrie to set up their marine specimens and displays.

THE MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE REFURBISHED Fast forward to 2021 and Ian and Diana Beadel have funded the latest refurbishment, with a cost of $1M, to ensure the longevity of this unique environmental learning facility. Ian says he sees this investment as paramount to the continuation of the program’s success, fostering respect and knowledge of the marine environment amongst younger generations. “Many aren’t aware that it is one of the largest, privately funded marine education facilities in Australia; a valuable community asset that must be fiercely protected. It’s one of a kind, and this latest redevelopment is the next phase of our long-term strategy to ensure its future,” says Ian. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . THINGS TO DO

“We aim to teach people to have a voice for the marine environment and be proud to use it” Having been an integral part of the education programs at the Marine Discovery Centre for over 12 years, Ted’s son, Rhett, is now busy reviving their popular school holiday camp program and weekly discovery sessions. “Prior to COVID, we ran a very busy school program, where schools from across Southeast Queensland would come for a one- or two-night camp to utilise both the marine centre and explore the unique rocky shores that we are so lucky to have at Hastings Point,” said Rhett. “At low tide, it’s an incredible place for kids to explore; looking in crevices and pools and finding all sorts of creatures.” “Kids can see octopus and wobbygongs, and hold sea cucumbers. They can experience the huge biodiversity around them and see marine life in action.” “We found that combining theoretical knowledge at the centre with field work at the rocky shores proved to be a huge success, so we can’t wait to welcome school groups to our new Marine Discovery Centre once more and continue that education.” Rhett also holds weekly discovery sessions at the Marine Discovery Centre, for families to visit and explore the centre. “We’ve got microscopes so the kids can explore micro communities and touch tanks for kids to see marine life up

close. These sessions are already proving to be a much-loved part of a family’s holiday activities!” For resort guests staying at North Star Holiday Resort during the school holidays, Rhett also runs free guided walks to the rocky shores. “Its quite easy in our modern world for kids to never really venture into an eco system. They might have gone to the park, watched the Octonauts on TV, but to actually hand them a sea urchin to hold, and see that joy of holding a real creature—it’s always an incredible moment.” Marine Discovery Centre Educator and passionate environmentalist, Kerrie Trees, says it is up to every person on the planet to be the voice for micro and macro fauna and flora that have no voice. “Through this centre, we can continue to encourage the young and the old, schools, communities and governments to take up the challenge and accept responsibility for our environment. “We aim to teach people, especially younger generations, to have a voice for the marine environment and be proud to use it,” said Kerrie. The launch of the new Marine Discovery Centre coincided with the announcement that North Star had been awarded the highly regarded Eco-Tourism Australia certification, which is internationally recognised through the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. A PURR-FECT

MORNING FOR FAMILIES

All parents love (aka need) good coffee. But how puurr-fect would it be if that coffee also comes with a side of cat cuddles?

I

f you are looking for something a little different to do with the kids, the Cat Retreat Cafe has to be one of the most unique family activities on the Sunshine Coast. Full of fur-babies ready for a pat, The Cat Retreat Café is the first Cat Café on the Coast… and mee-wow, we are hooked! The café is the brainchild of Tania Barton, owner of feline sanctuary, Hobbits Knob Cat Retreat. "Once Hobbits Knob Cat Retreat was established, we wanted to extend our services to include an interactive Cat Café, where we house adult cats and provide training, enrichment and extra love and care in an exclusive, cat friendly environment,” says Tania. “Patrons can enjoy the serenity of our hinterland property at our cat-themed café, or they can book a session to have cake and coffee with the cats in the interactive cat environment, The Zen Zone,” says Tania. “They can also hire out the entire Zen Zone for a small group price for up to 15 patrons, where they can have the cats to themselves.” All the cats at the Cat Retreat Café are refuge cats looking for new homes. The Cat Retreat Cafe works in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and the Zen Zone entry fee helps to cover the care and enrichment provided by Tania's staff.

“By having a controlled environment where we introduce refuge cats to patrons, they are helping provide extra love to the cats. But also if they have a beautiful connection with one of the cats, they can apply to adopt them through the program.” As well as the tranquil environment, this cat-themed café offers a yummy range of coffee, cold drinks, cakes, treats and lunches. “We love watching patrons interact with each other over their common interest, cats, which is amazing and helps to break down social barriers in a comfortable, non-judgemental space,” says Tania. “But, I especially love to see and hear people’s reaction to the gorgeous cats and how they love to just sit and chill in their space." Since opening The Cat Retreat Cafe' in April 2019 the re-homing program has been able to provide over 60 cats a new furrever home. “We love to provide the region with an experience unlike any other. We aim to be the most talked about café on the Coast, and although the focus is on working closely with refuge cats to provide a different avenue to find their ‘forever home’, we aim to have some pretty fantastic coffee, drinks and treats!” Tania says. This has to be the puuurr-fect place for a morning out with the kids.

Great coffee plus cat cuddles has patrons feline fine!

FUN LITERACY CAR GAMES We love a little sneaky early learning! Playing games in the car is a great way to pass the time whilst nurturing your little one’s early literacy. Here are our favourites: NUMBER PLATE BINGO

Perfect for a road trip, all you need are bingo cards (with letters rather than numbers on them) and pencils. Kids look for the letters on their bingo card on number plates and cross them off when they spot one. First one to get a full row is the winner! A TO Z

Pick a topic and see if you can find an object or word from A to Z in alphabetical order. For example: ‘Audi’, ‘bus stop’, ‘cone’. If there’s not much to see out of the windows, this can also be played by choosing a topic, such as animals: ‘alligator’, ‘badger’, ‘cat’. FIND THE COLOUR

One person picks a colour to find. The first person to find that colour on something outside the car wins and picks the next colour. 20 QUESTIONS

One person thinks of an object. Everyone else in the car can ask up to 20 yes/no questions to work out what the object is. For littler ones, limit the object to a category such as ‘food’. RHYME TIME

Say something that you see. Then everyone thinks of words that rhyme with it. For example: ‘sign’, ‘line’, ‘nine’.

SILLY NUMBER PLATES

Use the letters in number plates to invent crazy sentences. For example: ABC 123 could be ‘aardvarks buy cupcakes’. CATEGORIES

Pick a topic (such as animals) and have every person find ten items that fall into that category. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF…

Think of a scenario and ask your child what they would do in that situation. It can be as funny or serious as you like. For example: “What would you do if it started raining pancakes?” or “What would you do if you got lost in the shopping centre?” This is a great way to get kids thinking and analysing. Don’t go it alone IT’S TIME TO ASK FOR HELP!

W

e chat to Kimberley Harper, Parentline Manager, to find out how we can normalise asking for and accepting help. Because, fellow parents, the era of perfect and stoic parenting is totally over. (Amen to that!) WHAT CAN WE DO TO NORMALISE HELP SEEKING? The shift in normalising help seeking has already begun. The world was different a decade ago—people were less busy, but also less likely to put their hand up when they needed help. Today, most people are more open to discussing their emotional needs. However, there’s still work to be done to remove that stigma that says you are failing if you need support. Parents need to know that needing support is not an indictment on their parenting. Everyone needs help! And this needs to be the norm, not the exception. HOW CAN PARENTLINE HELP? Parentline can help in so many ways! We offer a free (yes, free!) counselling service, available 365 days a year, 8am to 10pm. All you need to do is pick up the phone, or jump onto our web chat.

In this day and age, where wait times to see health specialists are long (and often very costly), Parentline is a service that is always available and always free, and every parent needs to know that. Most importantly, there’s no limitations to how you use the service. There’s a huge percentage that are one-off calls, but we can provide ongoing support too. We can book in calls for families and we can listen— no matter how big or small you feel the problem is. For me, parenting comes down to capacity. On certain days, it can be lower than others. When a parents capacity is low and they are struggling, to have someone non-judgemental to act as a holding space is invaluable. WHY DO YOU FEEL PARENTS ARE R E A L LY S T R U G G L I N G T O D AY ? Everything that happens in your life affects your capacity to parent. And we have so much more going on nowadays—work, managing finances, running a household, friendships, lack of extended family support. All these things impact on our daily life. I like to see it as: it’s not what pops the balloon, but rather what has been blowing it up.

WE ARE VERY PROUD TO BE YOUR MEDIA PARTNER! WHY DO WE ALL NEED TO J O I N F O R C E S T O D AY T O HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE? I’m a massive advocate for early intervention, and normalising use of the service for everyday families. Partnering with a wonderful magazine like Kids on the Coast/Kids in the City—that reaches a large proportion of parents in Southeast Queensland—is invaluable in letting families know that we are here to help. The sooner we get in there and assist, making this service as normal as calling the GP, the better it is for families. Dining Out So you’ve decided to go out to eat? Well, that’s the easy part done. The next question is where to go? If you’re having trouble deciding, we suggest starting with your cuisine of choice and taking it from there. FEEL LIKE MODERN A U S T R A L I A N ? If an old-fashioned juicy burger is your thing, grab your crew and bond over burgers and delicious herbed chips at Grill’d. If you need somewhere quieter for avo-smash and coffee, try the all-day breakfast delights at The Good Place. As the café name suggests, their seasonal menus reflect modern, beachy flavours, that are completely gluten-free, wholesome and made from sustainably and locally sourced produce. They even have a kid’s menu too! Just thinking about pan-fried gnocchi or a mixed grill platter from The Groove Train makes our mouths water. This eclectic restaurant and bar serves up a range of flavourful, bold dishes that would appeal to any appetite. Whether it's an intimate dinner for two, a lively meal for 15 or a famly celebration, they’ve got it covered. A S I A N S O U N D I N G G O O D ? We may have had to miss out on overseas travel, but one thing we haven’t had to miss out on is delicious Asian food. You can get all the authentic noodle-goodness from P’Nut Street Noodles. Their chefs combine traditional cooking methods with handmade sauce

Grill'd bases sourced from Thailand to give all the dishes that signature street flavour. If you prefer Japanese, it’s never been easier to satisfy those sushi cravings than at the Sushi Chain. Dishes are served sushi-train style (a heap of fun for the kids, right?) and include a range of nigiri, aburi, gunkan, hand rolls and hot side dishes. MEXICAN MORE YOUR THING? Grab your sombreros, amigos! The muchloved burritos, tacos and nachos from Guzman Y Gomez are perfect for family time or a quick bite on the fly. Better yet, get some friends together, grab a frozen margarita and settle on in. HOW ABOUT SOMETHING FROM THE USA? Lone Star Rib House has rounded up the biggest flavours of Texas. So, pull out your boots and mosey on in for the best BBQ ribs in town. Just make sure you don’t go belly up before dessert. HOW ABOUT EUROPEAN SWEETS? Prepare to become obsessed with the chocolately goodness from Oliver Brown. Their mouth-watering waffles or freshly baked churros are perfect for a midmorning or afternoon treat. We are sure you’ll enjoy every chocolatey bite.

BESPOKE CLOTH NAPPIES NOW AVAILABLE FOR CHILDCARE SERVICES

Each centre has their own uniquely designed nappies

O

ver the past three years, Cottontail Nappy Service has been hard at work successfully preventing over 300,000 disposable nappies from going into landfill by replacing them with cloth nappies. “We started with homes and thought, why stop there? We need to get our childcare centres onto this!” said Ashley Costello, coowner of Cottontail Nappy Service. Cloth nappies are not what they used to be. Newly improved Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs) make changing babies just as easy and efficient as with a disposable. “There are so many reasons for a centre to cloth,” said Ashley. “Along with reducing your carbon footprint and landfill output (making your centre more environmentally appealing), cloth nappies are also deemed to be better for our babies. With no harsh chemicals or plastics, they are much softer on the skin which can prevent common issues such as nappy rash. There is also a lot of claims that clothing your baby makes the transition to potty training much easier. This is definitely something we know toddler carers would appreciate!” Cottontail offers personalised bespoke prints for their MCNs. “Each centre has their own uniquely designed nappies, designed to capture each childcare centre’s individuality,” said Ashley. “We are a very affordable choice to a centre’s disposable nappies. We have a free promotional Childcare Package Bag available to all centres this month, contact us for your bag!”

THE SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL

NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

T

iny, curled-up bundles of love, the precious newborn stage is over in the blink of an eye. Newborn photography is the best way to capture this fleeting time, but with only one window of opportunity, how do you ensure you get it right? We chat to newborn photographer Radi from Snuggle Pix to find out.

Why do you feel newborn photography is important for families? Newborns grow so fast and that tiny baby stage is so incredibly fleeting. Newborn photography allows you to revisit and relive this poignant and beautiful moment time and time again, and share these moments with future generations. It also captures and signifies family bonding at this very new stage in your lives together. Plus, birthing a baby is a huge milestone and deserves documenting professionally!

When is the best time to book, considering you don’t know when baby will arrive? Capturing those fleeting newborn days.

It’s best to book during your final trimester and a good photographer will always put your date preferences first, and make time for you even if you book last minute.

What baby age is best? The best time to photograph is around one week old, if you are looking for those sleepy snuggly images where baby is easily moulded into poses and not fussing. Some clients prefer that baby is more alert during the photo session, so there is more family interaction and eyes are open. If you prefer this, then when bub is about 3 to 4 weeks works well.

Is there anything a parent should bring to the shoot?

I shoot at my client’s homes and bring all the backgrounds, posing bean bag, drapes and swaddles with me, so parents don’t need to wory about anything! I send my clients a ‘What To Expect’ information sheet before the session so they are

50

J U LY / A U G U S T 2021

well informed about feeding, clothing and how the session will run beforehand.

What tricks do you have for soothing a baby to get that perfect shot?

Baby should be fed right before the session and also during the session, as a full tummy makes for a more content and cooperative little bubba. If you’d like baby nude or half swaddled during the session make sure the environment is warm and cosy as this will induce a more womb-like environment and is likely to lead to a more settled baby. Using soothing techniques can be critical to a successful session. Gently patting or rubbing baby’s back can help ease them back to sleep, along with a “shhhh, shhhh” reassuring sound or using a white noise app. I suggest having a pacifier on hand, even if you aren’t intending to use it in the long-term. A pacifier just helps to soothe baby and keeps them calm during the session and can be removed quickly (and reinserted if need be) as you create the image.

What would you say to a mum who is finding the newborn days hard and is nervous about proceeding with newborn photography?

Choose an experienced newborn photographer as they will provide you with confidence and peace of mind during the session. Newborn photography requires skill, great sensitivity and natural intuition. Always check a potential photographer’s portfolio and make sure it’s in line with the style and level of ability you are looking for. A high level of professionalism is key.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR MORE PLAY ON VACAY! The best family holidays aren’t about the budget or even the destination

P

By Josephine Agostino

lanning the perfect family holiday can leave many parents falling into a very familiar trap. In an effort to keep everyone happy, and avoid the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ from the kids, trips away from the hustle and bustle of daily life have become overscheduled with back-to-back activities and ticket bookings. New research has revealed that the most rewarding family holidays happen when there is far less planning both before and during a trip away. According to a survey conducted by vacation home website Stayz, the most memorable family holiday activity isn’t one of Australia’s most visited tourist sites. It’s playing. “Playing games, swimming in the pool, eating out and making sandcastles are the greatest holiday memories for Australians,” says Stayz travel expert Simone Scoppa. Regardless of whether the vacation is at a campground, farmstay, resort, rental house—or even a staycation at home—what Aussies really want out of their few precious weeks each year away from work and school with their loved ones is more unstructured downtime. “Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve all had a very serious 12 months and it’s left K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

us craving some good times with loved ones,” says Ms Scoppa. “Time for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, nieces and nephews to escape into a game of cards, hide and seek, dress ups or Marco Polo in the swimming pool. Time not to worry about work, homework or mowing the grass.” The hectic juggle of daily life is providing families with less time to play than ever before, and that’s evident in the survey, which revealed 61 percent of women and 59 percent of men agree that parents feel guilty for not having time to play with their kids. That means creating opportunities for this type of interaction on holidays is far more important than ticking off locations on an itinerary. The survey revealed that seven in 10 Aussies believe that playing with kids helps to create stronger bonds and memories. Of all the states surveyed, it’s Queenslanders who value play the most, with 76 percent of respondents believing play is key to achieving a quality family holiday. Making time to play is also much better for our health than we think, says leading psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. “Nothing lights up the human brain like three-dimensional play with loved ones,” says Dr Carr-Gregg, who is a specialist in

This Stayz holiday home in Castaways Beach is the ultimate play house. parenting, children and adolescents. “Not only does play relieve stress, improve brain function and enhance creativity, it also improves our relationships and our connections to other people. Play is what helps us feel young and energetic throughout our entire lifespan.” So, what’s high on the wishlist for Aussies to enjoy more playtime on holidays? Stazy reports some of the most requested items for family accommodation are: high J U LY / A U G U S T 2021

speed internet, a swimming pool with inflatables, an indoor cinema room, board games, and scooters and bikes. “Once we drilled down into the research it was clear that it was human connection—not just internet connection—that really matters most to families,” says Ms Scoppa. It’s not just immediate families who benefit from playtime while on a break. Grandparents create stronger bonds with children in their family during this special time, according to 46 percent of those surveyed. That’s why holiday options that allow grandparents as well as other extended family members to spend more time with each other are becoming more popular than ever as people seek the reconnection lost during the pandemic. When choosing a destination, consider the type of downtime that your family enjoys most. Do they want to spend hours in the water cooling off, or would they rather somewhere to explore the bush and spot wildlife? Wherever you go, enjoying playtime doesn’t have to cost a cent. You could: • Take a dip at the property’s local beach or lake—or if it has a hose in the backyard, spray it at the kids for some old fashioned fun. • Take a few sports items from the garage and create a backyard Olympics. • Bring a portable speaker and have a nightly dance party. • Make a scavenger hunt and treasure map to explore the accommodation grounds. Deciding just what type of

Ditch the itinerary, it's time to plan a holiday around fun!

accommodation may suit a family’s needs can be tricky, but there are plenty of online tools to help take the stress out of planning. Stayz provides the option to search for properties with items such as cots and high chairs, those that allow pets, and those that have been rated 4+ stars by reviewers with families. Having dedicated family time to rest and relax together does wonders in helping the family bond more. Look for the right accommodation that will grant you relaxing amenities, like a private pool or hot tub, as well as communal spaces for a game of charades or completing a jigsaw puzzle. Stayz also has a new function on its Trip Boards planning tool where you can now add a poll to allow members of your group to vote on their favourite place to stay. Taking a few shortcuts for meal planning will also give you more quality family time. Arrange a grocery delivery for your arrival day and have a few meals planned out. If you’re driving, take a meal kit box with you and share the cooking load with other family members without having to worry about what dish to make. Creating unforgettable family experiences is the goal of every holiday—and there are just as many opportunities to do that, despite not being able to go overseas. “Family holidays have been a lifelong tradition in Australia,” says Ms Scoppa. “And at the core of what holidays are all about is just bringing your loved ones together and making new memories to talk about for years to come.” K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . MY DAD

BAZ & BENZ

By Susan Quinn, illustrated by Marina Ruiz

Heidi McKinnon

My Dad is a beautifully illustrated, stereotypebusting celebration of all the everyday things one child’s dad does, which makes him so wonderfully, daddish-ly awesome! From baking cookies and gardening to playing make-believe and watching the sun set, a child reveals all the simple yet wonderful things he loves to do with his dad. With lyrical rhyming text and gentle illustrations, this book is a special reading experience between a child and their father. For ages 4-7. $12.99

From the creator of I Just Ate My Friend, this is a gorgeous and hilarious exploration of enduring friendship. ‘Benz, are we friends?’ ‘Yes, Baz, we are best friends.’ ‘For how long?’ ‘For ever and ever.’ But what do you do when your best friend is … kind of annoying? Baz & Benz is a delightfully funny and warmhearted story about a little owl exploring the boundaries of love and friendship. For ages 3-6. $14.99
