WELCOME

D

o you remember the last time you really immersed yourself in a book? I’ve always been an avid reader and I devoured books and magazines as a child. But the busy life I lead nowadays never gives me time to sit down and completely get lost in the pages. I might get through a page or two, then either fall asleep (yup, always tired!) or I have to spring back into action at the calls of ‘MUM!’ once more. But what if I’d never developed that love for reading? Would I be writing this today? Probably not. I had no idea the simple process of reading would be opening doors I never knew existed. So, how do we ensure a love for reading is instilled in our little ones, and encourage reluctant readers to try again? Therefore, this issue we are all

about reading, and the real-life superpowers that a love for reading can bring to our kids. So much more than simply turning pages, these superpowers might just open doors for them too, and give them the best possible start in life. As well as becoming bookworms, we take a quick trip up the Bruce Highway to Australia Zoo to check out their fun program of being a Zookeeper for a Day. Such a special experience it’s well worth the drive. And as always, we have a round-up of the best events Brisbane has to offer throughout May and June as well as the usual local news, reviews and more. With love and sunshine,

Be the first to know what’s on, plus all the competitions, news and more delivered straight to your inbox each week.

MY LIT TLE WARDROBE JUST GOT BIGGER Local baby and kids’ boutique, My Little Wardrobe, has taken its online shop to the next level, launching its own range of personalised and custom-printed tops. Designed and made on the Gold Coast, MLW BY DESIGN combines kids personalisation and fashion to offer the nation’s kids some majorly trendy threads. It all started back in 2015 when Sofia was on maternity leave and couldn’t find that one-stop shop with everything for her little man. So, she followed her instincts and launched her own online store. Today, MLW has grown to become one of Australia’s favourite baby and kids e-commerce stores, sourcing the trendiest kids’ threads locally and globally. From cool and funky baby clothing to swimwear, tanks, tees and hoodies, the store caters for ages 0 to 10.

MAKE READING YOUR

Superpower What if there was a superpower available to all kids that guarantees them a better start in life?

E

very kid dreams of being a superhero (and many adults too!). Defeating baddies, saving the world, and all of it done in a darn snazzy outfit. And no superhero is complete without a superpower: some can fly; some are part animal; some have super-human strength. Of course, in the real world, none of this is possible. But there is one thing that can give kids the power for a better start in life… it’s the simple art of reading. Reading can be a source of frustration in many households. School readers are boring, jumbled letters don’t seem to make sense, and this can lead to kids rejecting reading from an early age. Once the stubbornness kicks in, sparking a love for reading seems almost impossible. But what if we can turn that around so kids see reading as their own special superpower?

K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

F E AT U R E

ENCOURAGING RELUCTANT READERS • Have books around the house • Set an example and read for fun as a parent • Make reading fun again by finding silly books or reading comics • Do an activity together that has instructions such as building LEGO or baking • Head outdoors – read signs, billboards, menus • Grab a map and guide book and go on a bushwalk or take a drive • Use technology such as apps or e-books, and analyse digital information together

THE ULTIMATE SUPERPOWER Reading is about so much more than picking up a book. Early literacy is critical across all areas of development and is carried through to adult life. Strong early literacy skills lead to higher grades in every subject throughout the school years. Early reading imparts a better attention span and concentration, and proficient literacy enables children to comprehend more of what they are reading. Kids become better researchers, able to extract the necessary information from books, websites and magazines. And being able to recognise a larger number of words by sight provides kids with a greater general knowledge base, enabling them to understand more and learn more about their environment. As well as the education gains, a love for reading brings many psychological and social benefits too. Reading for fun can improve a sense of connectedness and empathy with the community. It also provides a deeper understanding of personal identity, allowing a child to grow in self-confidence, maturity and independence. Non-fiction ignites a child’s curiosity about places and people, and satisfies curiosity when looking for answers on how the world works, whilst fiction sparks creativity, imagination and

16

M AY / J U N E 2019

Therefore, the early years are critical in embedding early literacy skills. To assist families in this, the Queensland State Government has launched a universal family literacy program called First 5 Forever. Designed to support families in providing stronger language and literacy environments for young children ages 0–5 years, the program provides a huge range of free resources including Rhymetime and Storytime sessions, and advice on how to bring early literacy into everyday life. “Children learn best from their primary caregiver,” Karen explains, “and it doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Singing, playing and chatting exposes a child to a wealth of early literacy and vocabulary.”

DEFEAT THE SERIOUS BADDIE

Traditionally, reading has had rather a serious reputation. But if it’s going to be promoted to a superpower status, it’s got to get a little ‘pow’ and ‘bam’ happening. “Treat reading as an adventure, where together you explore new worlds,” Karen says. “It should always be fun and never a chore… something kids are excited to do.” “Babies and pre-schoolers love nothing more than sitting down with Mum or Dad and enjoying a story, it’s about keeping that engagement and enthusiasm going as they problem-solving skills. grow older.” In a digital age, the skills that come from And Karen believes that happens best by reading are becomingly increasingly essential giving the power of choice. for success in later life. “Kids are most enthusiastic when they “We are now in a knowledge-based have the power to choose what they read,” economy where data and analysis make up she says. “Whether silly stories about farts, a large part of future employment,” Karen or non-fiction about spiders, so long as Gawen Young People’s Services Supervisor young kids are reading and enjoying it, that’s from Sunshine Coast Council explains. what matters.” “Yet, today, 46 per cent of adult Australians Giving kids the space to choose also allows cannot function effectively in them to explore different this information-driven world genres without feeling they are “Kids are most due to poor literacy.” taught or directed. “The enthusiastic when being In a recent study Australia library today is a treasure trove they have the ranked 21st against 45 of fun reading material – with developed countries in magazines, comics, branded power to choose international Grade 4 reading, fiction and more,” Karen says. what they read” so it’s a worrying trend that “And because it is all free, you needs to turn. can borrow whatever you like; test out new things, push the boundaries and explore.” SUPERPOWERS START EARLY “It’s also important that every child gets Though most children start to formally read their own library card, rather than borrow on at school, research has found that the a parent’s card,” Karen continues. “This not groundwork to make that possible happens only keeps a record of everything each child in the first five years. has read, it also adds to the autonomy; “Up to 90 per cent of a child’s brain giving them the power to choose, borrow development happens in the first five years, and return independently.” and a child’s success at age 10 can be linked And having that choice ultimately gives to the amount of talk they hear from birth to them control over what shape their own age 3,” says Karen. superpower will take.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work as a zoo keeper? Well get ready for a day on the wild side at Australia Zoo this school holidays and become a Zookeeper for a Day!

A

ustralia Zoo believes in ‘Conservation through Exciting Education’ and what could be more exciting for a budding zookeeper than spending a day meeting some of the amazing animals and finding out first-hand what it is like to work in a zoo? By the end of the program, the zoo’s passion for wildlife and conservation will inspire every budding zookeeper to do what they can to help protect the environment. Because many of the Zookeepers for a Day come back time and again, the school holiday programs include some different activities every time. Here’s an idea of what to expect: KHAKI DISCOVERY! to care for animals in a zoo. This could include working alongside the experienced keeping staff to prepare or feed out some delicious food, clean animal habitats or provide some exciting enrichment for the animals to interact with. All that hard work will be rewarded with a chance to get up close with some amazing wildlife! The Zookeepers-in-training learn about the fascinating features different animals have and find out why animals are so important for the environment. DID YOU KNOW?? A wombat has an average top speed of 40km/h and could outrun Usain Bolt over 100 metres! KHAKI EXTREME! For older wildlife enthusiasts, aged 11–15

years old, Australia Zoo offers the chance to gain an understanding and appreciation of what’s involved in working in one of the world’s most renowned zoological and conservation facilities. The Zookeepers-in-training can also look forward to meeting some of the Ambassador species, learning about the challenges facing animals in the wild and finding out how they can make a difference. During the day they may visit the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, quiz the Wildlife Warriors or be inspired by the passionate keepers. “My daughter is a pretty quiet personality, but she was BEAMING with excitement when we picked her up and didn’t stop talking about DJ the Rhino and cleaning the snakes’ enclosure and watching them feed (she loves reptiles).” M AY / J U N E 2019

With a parent or carer along for the experience, the littlest explorers will have the chance to meet some of the Zoo favourites and chat to real life zookeepers about what they do every day. DID YOU KNOW?? An Echidna’s tongue can be up to 18cm long! AND MORE... If your zookeeper has energy to spare at the end of the program, they can continue the adventure and re-enter the Zoo until it closes! And as if the animals weren’t enough, they can wrap up their day by burning off some energy on the new jumping pillow, cooling off at the water park and refuelling at the Lolly Shop and Ice Creamery. “They taught me things I didn’t know! I love that the girls can have a great day out on the holidays but still take some education out of the day. Great job by all involved, including behind the scenes. I will definitely be recommending the day to all my friends. From one very happy mum!” Zookeeper for a Day programs often sell out, so book in advance on the Australia Zoo website (australiazoo.com.au) or call 07 5436 2000 for more information. oices on the Coast is an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with over 25 Australian authors, illustrators, poets and performers as they excite and inspire young people aged between 10 and 18 years old about the world of children’s literature. This annual youth festival has been an important part of children’s literature on the Sunshine Coast since 1996 when two teachers from Immanuel Lutheran College brought the festival to the Sunshine Coast. The festival now attracts up to 5,000 students from across the Sunshine Coast and hinterland for the two student days held at USC: Sunshine Coast. This year, humorous stories are prominent at the festival as a method to engage our young people with literature and the love of reading. Guest authors, Oliver Phommavanh and Mick Elliott, both return to deliver talks and workshops. Oliver, a former school teacher, loves to make people laugh, either through

DISNEY’S “TOY STORY 4”

In cinemas 20 June (CTC)

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world, taking care of his kid. So, when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky, declares himself as ‘trash’ and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when a road trip takes an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep, Woody and Bo realise they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, and they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.

DINO KING: JOURNEY TO KING MOUNTAIN

In cinemas 20 June (CTC)

An action-packed family adventure that combines the realism of Walking with Dinosaurs with the heart of Finding Nemo. Speckles, a ferocious tarbosaurus and his young son Junior, mourning the loss of their family in an epic battle, roam the lands in search of food, adventure and peace. After one encounter results in Junior being kidnapped, Speckles embarks on an adventure to the ends of the earth to find his son. Encountering friend and foe, Speckles will stop at nothing and will take on all corners to save his offspring.

Continuing the story of Max and his pet friends, the highly-anticipated sequel answers the question: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home? Terrier, Max, is coping with some huge life changes. His owner is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Meanwhile, Pomeranian Gidget tries to rescue Max’s favourite toy from a cat-packed apartment, and crazy-but-cute bunny Snowball gets delusions of grandeur that he’s an actual superhero after his owner starts dressing him in superhero pyjamas. Can Max, Snowball, Gidget and the rest of the gang find the inner courage to face their biggest fears?
