A VILLAGE FOR EVERY CHILD IN THE HEART OF ASHMORE

WHAT'S ON FOR KIDS THIS SPRING

Spring is finally here and I, for one, could not be happier. Sure, our winters aren’t exactly Arctic, but let’s be honest — it’s been pretty bloody cold and wet. I’m more than ready for sunshine, bare feet on warm sand, and that unmistakable feeling of everything starting to bloom again.

This issue, we’re brushing off the winter cobwebs and heading out into the community with a spring in our step. For our cover feature, we’ve donned high-vis and hard hats to check out DIG IT mini excavator park — and trust me, it’s the family day out you didn’t know you needed.

Sticking with the mud theme, we’ve also got the lowdown on what’s in store when the epic Spartan Moreton Bay lands in SEQ this October (page 34). This one’s going to be huge, and yes, we can’t wait to give it a go ourselves.

In our education feature, we shine a light on a remarkable early learning centre in Ashmore that’s building a true community village around every child in its care. We also sit down with psychologist and play therapist Kristen Whittingham, founder of Play Plus

attractions provide. With the addition of horse-riding experiences and the launch of the Equestrian Academy – a subscription-based program for local kids and teens – Historic Rivermill is becoming a hub for families seeking more than just a single visit.

The Ultimate Hinterland Animal Adventure

With unique animal activities, in the most picture-perfect natural setting, a day at Historic Rivermill is a must-do this spring.

Tucked away on the Coomera River, Historic Rivermill has been part of the local landscape for decades, but with new experiences and a renewed focus on families, it’s quickly becoming one of the region’s most unique and treasured family-friendly day out options.

What makes Historic Rivermill truly unforgettable is its wild turtle spotting – the only place in the country where families can share this magical encounter. Watching the kids’ faces light up as turtles swim to the river’s edge is an experience that stays with you long after the day is done.

But that’s just the start. Families can also hand-feed friendly alpacas and goats, meet the farm horses, and participate in handson animal activities that allow children to connect with nature in ways few other

After the fun, the riverside café provides the perfect place for parents to unwind. Overlooking the water and surrounded by tall gums, it’s a rare chance to relax in nature while the kids explore safely nearby. A highlight not to miss is the famous Devonshire tea, best enjoyed with the sound of the river flowing beside you.

For local parents, Historic Rivermill is the kind of place you’ll want to keep in your back pocket for weekends, school holidays, or even mid-week adventures. And our favourite, it’s the perfect location for a kids’ birthday party! With plenty of space, unique animal encounters, and easy access, it’s an outing that keeps everyone happy – from toddlers to grandparents.

And for visitors to the Gold Coast, it’s a must-do. More than just another attraction, Historic Rivermill offers a true taste of the hinterland – a mix of history, nature, animals, and country hospitality that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Whether you’re spotting turtles by the river, sharing a picnic on a farm ride, or signing the kids up for their first horse-riding lessons, Historic Rivermill offers families a chance to slow down, reconnect, and create memories together.

This season, make it your must-do. Because sometimes, the best adventures are the ones hiding right in our own backyard.

Historic Rivermill offers so much including wild turtle spotting, feeding the Alpacas and goats, and horse riding.

The Gold Coast Swim School Families Prefer

Aqua Kidz Ormeau is conveniently located just 800 metres from Exit-45 on the M1-South, but why do 45% of customers travel 10-30 km to Aqua Kidz — most passing at least three other swim schools on their way?

Ann and Greg Ferrar are owneroperators of the school, and Ann says, “Our school’s popular qualities start with our belief that children learn faster and more willingly when they are happy and having fun.”

Entering the school, children find a large, enclosed play area — the first of two. The play areas set the fun, friendly mood of the school; each with toys, colouringin, and a television showing children’s favourites. Also, keeping waiting siblings busy, the play areas free up parents/carers to watch or take part in lessons.

Aqua Kidz offers smaller classes, saying it is essential to provide personalised instruction. Ann adds, “Not being part of a big corporate chain or a council means our team delivers a personalised experience. This builds the trust with children, which is so important to challenge them to progress faster with confidence and without fear.”

Ann and Greg are particularly passionate about children starting their water safety journey from a young age. Greg says, “We have five levels for under 3-yearolds. This approach helps babies become confident, water-safe, and independent much faster. Our Penguin class is for 2-year-olds without a parent, which is a truly unique achievement by these children, with other schools only accommodating this milestone of

independence at 3-4 years old.”

The indoor facility is warm year-round, and being private is free of distractions, intrusions, and crowding. The 33-34°C pools are Magnesium and UV-treated, which means no skin irritations or stinging red eyes.

Local wellbeing coach, Lisa O’Donoghue, is offering a unique opportunity on the Gold Coast for girls aged 8 to 12 years to strengthen their confidence, resilience, and emotional intelligence through hands-on workshops.

At The Thought Edit, Lisa guides girls through essential topics including resilience, self-esteem, managing anxiety, effective communication, navigating big emotions, and practising mindfulness and gratitude, typically offered as an eight-week after school program.

With many parents and children seeking greater flexibility, Lisa now runs two to three-hour weekend workshops. And, for the

first time, an immersive two-day school holiday program focused on friendships.

The upcoming 2 day Fantastic Friendships workshop helps tweens identify healthy friendships, navigate conflict, steer clear of drama and gossip, and communicate boundaries respectfully. Each session is designed to be practical, interactive and fun, giving girls valuable tools that they can use immediately in everyday life.

Lisa said her goal is to support young girls during this pivotal stage . “I want girls to feel confident and armed with strategies to see them through their tween years and beyond, as emotionally healthy as possible,” she said.

Digging Up Fun

Why thousands of families are flocking to Tamborine Mountain for the ultimate dirt-loving adventure.

From hard hats to high-vis, mini-excavators to millionblock demolitions, Queensland’s one-of-a-kind Dig IT, Australia’s first mini-excavator park, has given over 200,000 kids (and plenty of parents) the thrill of operating real machinery. And they’re just getting started.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

It’s fun, it’s educational, it’s muddy, and it’s the only place in Australia where kids operate real diggers. Welcome to the best day out you didn’t know you needed: a hands-on family day that’s equal parts play, learning and pure dirt-loving joy. What’s better, Dig IT is at home at Thunderbird Park at Tamborine Mountain Glades, a place that’s legendary for family stays!

After bursting onto the scene like a wrecking ball just over two years ago, Dig IT has cemented itself as one of Australia’s most unique, hands-on attractions, and the numbers tell the story.

More than 200,000 visitors have rolled up their sleeves, donned their hard hats and high-vis gear, and taken control of real 1.7-tonne CAT mini-excavators in an outdoor construction zone that’s fast becoming the stuff of childhood legend.

From the moment they step onto site, kids transform into mini construction workers – climbing into the driver’s seat (either solo or with a parent/carer riding shotgun) and learning how to operate the machines. They dig deep, scoop and dump dirt, use a claw to lift and stack tyres, and even master the delicate skill of using a hook to catch rogue ‘crocs’ that keep things interesting.

“The kids’ reactions still blow us away, there are smiles for miles out here in every session,” said Dig IT co-founder Kate Keegan.

“There’s nothing like watching kids put on their hard hats and high viz, climb into the cab, and take control of their digger. It’s fun, educational, screen-free and totally unique. The mile-wide smiles on kids and grown-ups are proof that digging in the dirt never gets old.”

The stats are equally impressive: in just 24 months, nine Queensland-built miniexcavators have clocked more than 3 million minutes of digging, lifting, stacking and demolishing – including the toppling of nearly one million blocks in the fan-favourite Demolition Zone.

WE FEEL LIKE WILLY WONKA WHEN WE OPEN THE GATES EACH DAY, THE KIDS COME IN BEAMING AND LEAVE WITH EVEN BIGGER SMILES, EVERY DAY IS MAGIC. DIG IT CO-FOUNDER AND DAD, SAM MCCOLL.

HOW IT WORKS –A DAY AT DIG IT

From the moment you arrive, Dig IT feels like a real construction site, only way more fun. Here’s what your little diggers are in for (FYI, just the best Day Ever!):

1. Suit Up – Every child gets their own hard hat and high-vis vest. Suddenly, they’re not visitors, they’re members of the Dig IT construction crew!

2. Listen Up – Dig IT’s famous BLUE CREW (that’s the operating team) takes all little diggers through an orientation – parents love this – it covers everything you need to know while on site.

3. Climb In – Then, it’s into the cab of a real 1.7-tonne CAT miniexcavator. Kids can operate solo or share the seat with a parent/carer to guide them through the controls.

4. Choose Your Zone

Dig Zone – move mountains of dirt! Claw & Croc Zone – Stack the tyres and catch those sneaky ‘crocs’.

Demolition Zone – Everyone’s favourite – take down a wall of blocks in one mighty swipe.

The RC Zone - Use state-of-the-art remote control machines like dozers, dump trucks, excavators, and rear loaders, just like on the work site.

5 RIPPER REASONS WHY DIG IT IS THE BEST. DAY. EVER.

1. You get to drive a REAL Digger, mate! These are real, 1.7-tonne mini-excavators, built right here in Queensland. Kids (and big kids at heart) get to jump in the driver’s seat, flick the levers, dig up dirt, catch crocs, and feel like a proper tradie for the day. Hard hats on, fun mode activated!

2. There’s always something extra going on! Cupcakes? Tick. Face painters? Tick. Colouring stations? Tick. Whether it’s a birthday bash or just a regular day, Dig IT goes above and beyond with themed fun and surprises to keep the little legends grinning from ear to ear.

3. Knock things down... and no one tells you off! Demolition Zone = pure joy. Kids (and adults) get to smash, crash and destroy block towers with total permission. It’s a little chaotic, a lot of fun, and the kind of mess that doesn’t need cleaning up. What a dream!

4. It’s screen-free, dirt-soaked family time No iPads. No phones. Just good old-fashioned fun in the great outdoors, where the only thing getting recharged is your love for real play. Plus, you’re on Tamborine Mountain – fresh air and family vibes for days!

5. It’s uniquely Aussie – and 100% legendary Where else but Australia would you find a construction theme park on a mountain, surrounded by rainforest, powered by diggers, dirt, and imagination? Dig IT is one-of-a-kind, just like the legends who visit it.

CODING FOR KIDS

THE FUTURE STARTS HERE

In today’s tech-driven world, coding is no longer a niche skill — it’s fast becoming as fundamental as reading and maths. For parents, the question isn’t if kids should learn to code, but how to give them the best start.

“Coding develops so much more than technical ability,” says Richard Colson, Director at coding and STEM academy Skill Samurai in Ashmore. “It teaches kids how to think critically, solve problems, and approach challenges with creativity and confidence.”

WHY CODING MATTERS

Learning to code equips children with a powerful toolkit of life skills. By breaking down complex problems into manageable steps, kids develop computational thinking — a skill that applies in classrooms, workplaces, and everyday life.

Problem-solving is at the heart of coding. Kids learn to experiment, test ideas, and iterate solutions, building resilience and a positive mindset towards challenges.

And it’s not just logic — coding fosters creativity too. Whether designing games,

building websites, or animating characters, children have a digital space to bring their ideas to life.

Coding also strengthens academic performance. Visual, interactive coding projects can make abstract maths and science concepts click, while the collaborative nature of coding teaches teamwork and communication.

THE POWER OF PERSONALISED LEARNING

While many programs follow rigid levels, Skill Samurai takes a different approach. “No two kids learn in exactly the same way,” Richard explains. “Our personalised learning pathways mean each child works at their own pace, on projects that match their interests and ability.”

This approach not only keeps kids engaged but also ensures steady progress. Parents receive regular updates, so they can see the skills and confidence their child is building.

INSIDE A SKILL SAMURAI CLASS

Walk into a Skill Samurai class and you’ll see more than screens and code — you’ll see collaboration, problem-solving, and a lot of smiles. Weekly, year-round classes are project-based and hands-on, covering everything from AI and robotics to game design and app development.

Students use professional coding tools in a safe, structured environment, guided by trained adult educators. Lessons are adapted to each child’s goals, whether that’s building a mobile game or programming a robot.

And while the focus is on future-ready skills, there’s plenty of fun. “We want kids to love learning here,” says Richard. “They make friends, they get to explore technology in exciting ways, and they leave each class feeling proud of what they’ve created.”

For parents looking to prepare their children for the future, coding offers a head start. And with the right guidance, it’s a journey filled with creativity, confidence, and possibility.

From Fridge Door to Forever

Meet the Gold Coast

sisters transforming children’s drawings into keepsakes that celebrate creativity and preserve childhood magic.

In an era where screens often dominate children’s attention, two Gold Coast sisters are on a mission to put pencils, paintbrushes, and pure imagination back in the spotlight.

Anja and Stella Lewis, founders of NxtGenTheory, have created a unique way for families to preserve and celebrate their children’s artistic milestones. From Christmas cards and wrapping paper to personalised stickers, NxtGenTheory transforms kids’ original drawings into highquality keepsakes - ensuring those precious masterpieces last well beyond the fridge door.

With over seven years’ experience in early childhood education, Anja understands how vital creativity is for a child’s development.

“I’ve seen firsthand how creativity fuels confidence, problem-solving skills, and emotional connection in children,” she says. “We wanted to create something that keeps childhood magic alive—something tangible, lasting, and filled with love.”

The process is refreshingly simple for busy families. Parents send in a child’s artwork, and the team at NxtGenTheory transforms it into Australian-made, eco-friendly products that can be enjoyed for years to come. Adding to the feel-good factor, 10 per cent of every sale is donated to a nominated school,

“A drawing is more than just lines on paper. It’s a snapshot of a child’s mind at that moment in time,” Anja explains. “We’ve watched children light up when they see their art turned into something the whole family can enjoy. It’s about valuing their creativity and making them feel proud.”

The sisters see their business as more than just a creative service. It’s also their way of responding to what they describe as the “screen-time epidemic.” They fondly recall their own childhood, filled with cubby houses built from couch cushions, spontaneous dress-ups with their dad, and games of hopscotch in the street.

“We want today’s kids to have those same hands-on experiences,” Anja says. “Turning their art into something special is one way to remind them, and their families, just how important that creative play is.”

NxtGenTheory’s products are available to families across Australia, with simple online ordering and delivery. The sisters also work with schools and childcare centres to encourage creativity in children and to strengthen bonds between families and communities. “We love working alongside educators to not only encourage imagination but also give back in ways that make a lasting difference,” says Anja.

For parents looking to celebrate their child’s artistic journey while supporting a cause, NxtGenTheory offers a thoughtful, personal, and lasting alternative to massproduced mementos, one that turns every doodle into a treasure.

The He♥rt of Ashmore

Building a village around every child

Tucked away in the quiet suburb of Ashmore, there’s a place where the smell of fresh muffins drifts from the kitchen, where children’s laughter echoes through sunlit play spaces, and where families feel instantly welcome.

This is Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Ashmore — more than a centre, it’s an extension of your home.

For the team at Sanctuary Ashmore, caring for children means creating an environment that wraps families in warmth and belonging. It’s a place where children’s learning is proudly displayed, where educators greet you with genuine smiles, and where every corner invites comfort, connection, and care.

“Our relationships go beyond the walls of the centre,” says Sanctuary Ashmore’s Centre Director, Tammy Haynes.

“When families walk through our doors, we want them to feel like they’ve stepped into a second home - one where they’re welcomed, supported, and part of something bigger.”

At Sanctuary Ashmore, caring for children isn’t just a job; it’s a shared commitment. The team are connected not just as colleagues, but as friends and family.

“We have a team that has been connected for almost two years now,” Tammy says.

“They spend time together on weekends, they do dinners, go shopping together – they’re connected personally, not just professionally. It means our children see a team that genuinely likes each other, works seamlessly together, and shares the same values. That consistency builds trust for our families, because they know who we are and what we stand for.”

This strong internal bond radiates outward — shaping how educators connect with families, welcome new enrolments, and nurture each child’s individual journey.

The team are guided by three core behaviours: Assume Positive Intent, Explain The Why, and Ask For and Offer Help. These behaviours are more than aspirations — they’re lived daily. Families see them when educators choose to approach each situation with kindness and understanding, when clear communication helps everyone know the ‘why’ behind decisions, and when help is offered freely and without hesitation. "It's important to us as a team that our families feel seen and heard," says Educational Leader, Sarah Harris.

“Our leadership team and educators make conversations with families a priority because we believe that supporting children in

collaboration is the best way to get great results. When families raise concerns, big or small, Tammy and I ensure we arrange a time to sit with them, reassure them with information on what’s considered age-appropriate, and share strategies to help overcome challenges.”

CREATING A COMMUNITY THAT EXTENDS BEYOND THE FRONT DOORS

Ashmore’s home-like culture doesn’t stop at the door, it reaches out into the wider community every day.

“Our bus service to Ashmore State School runs daily,” explains Sarah.

“At the school our educators connect with children who used to attend the centre, and chat to families who are interested in beginning care. Our Seagulls children have regular excursions to the Nerang Library and Benowa Botanical Gardens, and visit Infin8 Care once a month. We also welcome regular guests like First Fives Rugby, Play Skills, Uncle Allan, Miss Kasey from Happy Feet, Little Sports Heroes, and Stuart from Seed the Ground — all of which strengthen our ties with the wider Ashmore community.”

For families, this creates a unique sense of belonging. “We’re not just dropping our child off at care,” says Emma Clarke, a Sanctuary Ashmore parent.

“There’s this genuine feeling that we’re in it together. I can talk to my child’s educators about anything from growth milestones, to behaviours, food and sleep — and know they’ll listen without judgement. That kind of parent support is invaluable.”

LIVING SANCTUARY’S VALUES EVERY DAY

The values of Respect, Connection, Collaboration, and Inclusion are more than words at the centre; they are embedded into the daily life of every studio.

“The four Sanctuary Values have just this week been written by one of our Seagulls children, and copies have been shared with every studio,” says Sarah.

“Educators have been invited to create their own Sanctuary Values poster, personalising it to their group of children. By having these posters in every space, the values are reinforced and serve as a visual reminder of what we stand for.” And the values aren’t just something the educators practise — the children carry them too.

events, because the relationships built here are lasting.

“When your child spends their day somewhere that feels like home, it changes everything. They’re comfortable enough to be themselves — and that’s when you see them thrive,” says Emma.

A PLACE WHERE EDUCATORS ARE PART OF THE FAMILY

Sanctuary Ashmore’s success is rooted in how it values its educators just as much as the families they serve.

“By having a consistent team of educators, our children feel safe and secure,” says Sarah.

“Visitors often comment on how calm the children are and that’s because they feel safe, seen and heard. The benefit is for the educators too. We’re so connected that we refer to each other as family, and that positivity flows into the environment we create for the children.”

Tammy agrees: “When educators know they can ask for help without hesitation, that

“Before a recent excursion to the Nerang Library, a few children were upset they weren’t on the list to go,” Sarah recalls.

“Other children stepped in to comfort them, reminding them that everyone gets a turn and they just needed to wait for theirs. It was such a beautiful moment of connection, collaboration, inclusion, and respect — and the educators didn’t need to step in at all.”

THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF FEELING AT HOME

When children feel safe, understood, and supported, learning comes naturally. At Sanctuary Ashmore, that’s exactly what happens. Children leave confident, socially capable, and connected to their community. Families often return for our community

honesty will be met with kindness, and that their successes will be celebrated, they can give the very best of themselves every day. That’s when the magic happens for the children.”

LOOKING FORWARD, STAYING TRUE

As Sanctuary Ashmore grows and adapts to the needs of its families, its heart will always remain the same: to be more than a centre — to be an extension of your home.

As Sarah reflects, “When you create a place where everyone — children, families, educators — feels they belong, you don’t just watch children grow; you grow alongside them. That’s what makes Sanctuary Ashmore special. That’s what makes it home.”

Where Wellbeing Comes First

A different kind of education at Y Schools Queensland

At Y Schools Queensland, student wellbeing is more than just support; it is the foundation of everything they do. When young people feel safe, connected, and empowered, they are more likely to thrive both at school and in life. With 11 campuses across Queensland, including Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, and Bundaberg, Y Schools Queensland offers alternative education programs for students in Years 7 to 12 who benefit from

a more flexible and personalised learning environment. Their mission is to prepare students for a life of choice, not chance, and their values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring guide everything they do.

The model is built on a three-pillar approach that supports students physically, mentally, and academically. Each student is surrounded by a team that includes teachers, counsellors, youth workers, and wellbeing coordinators, all working together to provide personalised

care. At Y Schools Queensland, wellbeing is personal, pathways are unique, and every student is seen, heard, and supported.

A key element of the Y Schools Queensland wellbeing model is Thrive. Thrive is an evidence-based, trauma-aware approach that helps students learn how to manage emotions, build confidence, and develop healthy relationships. It is integrated into the daily routines of each school day through regular check-ins, predictable routines, positive classroom practices, and supportive conversations. These strategies help foster a calm and consistent environment where students feel safe and prepared to learn.

In a time when bullying, anxiety, and school refusal are increasing nationwide, Y Schools Queensland is proud to stand out with a model that emphasises connection before curriculum. Through Thrive, they are not just educating students; they are helping them build confidence, coping skills, and a sense of community needed to lead empowered lives.

More than ‘Just Play’

Curious about Play Therapy, and how to know if it’s the real deal? This powerful approach is growing fast, as more parents discover the key to children’s wellbeing may lie in the playroom.

For most children, play is more than just a way to pass the time and have fun. It’s their language, their way of making sense of the world. But when a child is facing emotional, behavioural, or developmental challenges, play can also become a powerful therapeutic tool.

Play Therapy is an evidence-based, powerful psychotherapeutic approach that allows children to express and process complex emotions, experiences, and difficulties through the medium they know best: play. In the hands of a trained professional, toys, games, and creative activities become instruments of healing, growth and connection.

“Sometimes, play isn’t fun,” says Kristen Whittingham, founder of Play Plus Therapy

and a registered psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience working with children. “It can be hard, frustrating, even cathartic. A child might not be able to tell you they’re scared or sad, but they’ll show you through their play.”

WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?

At its core, Play Therapy is about providing a safe, supportive space where children can explore big emotions and challenging experiences. Whether it’s navigating anxiety, adjusting to a family separation, recovering from trauma, or simply building emotional regulation skills, Play Therapy gives children the opportunity to express themselves in a developmentally appropriate way.

Through play, children learn to name their feelings, understand their reactions, and discover new ways to cope. They also learn social skills, empathy, and communication through imaginative interaction. It is suitable for both neurodivergent and neurotypical children.

DELIVERED BY EXPERTS

Critically, Play Therapy is not just ‘playing with toys’ or offering a warm playspace. It is a clinical form of psychotherapy, and needs to be delivered by professionals with extensive

PLAY THERAPY CAN HELP YOUR CHILD WITH:

• Emotional expression and regulation

• Behavioural challenges

• Social skills and relationships

• Trauma and grief processing

• Self-esteem and confidence

“We can’t keep putting adult expectations on children,” Kristen says. “They don’t see the world like we do. Their brains are still developing — socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Play meets them exactly where they are.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

training in child development, counselling, and therapeutic practice.

“This work requires deep expertise,” says Kristen. “Children in therapy are often vulnerable — they might be dealing with grief, trauma, or neurodivergent needs. You need to know you’re supporting them safely and ethically.”

Kristen holds a Master of Child Play Therapy and numerous specialised certifications, including Filial Therapy, group therapy, and the Learn to Play approach. She is also a Certified Teacher’s Optimal Relationship Approach (TORA) practitioner, equipping educators with therapeutic tools to better support children in classrooms.

“When looking for a play therapist, ask about their qualifications,” Kristen advises. “Do they have a strong foundation in child development? Are they registered with a recognised professional body? That’s how you know your child is in safe hands.”

WHY DO CHILDREN NEED PLAY TO HEAL?

While adults can often talk their way through emotional challenges, children simply don’t have the brain development or vocabulary to do the same.

In one memorable case, Kristen recalls working with a child who had fallen off the monkey bars at school. The child didn’t talk about it, but in the playroom, began enacting the fall with a small dollhouse staircase, guiding dolls through rescue and care scenarios. “That was the child processing the trauma in a way that felt safe and natural to them,” Kristen explains. “And they never played it out again. They’d done the work they needed to do.”

A HOLISTIC APPROACH FOR FAMILIES

At Play Plus Therapy, the therapeutic relationship doesn’t stop at the playroom door. The whole family is considered part of the support system.

“I often say to the parent or carer: ‘make yourself a cup of tea, put your feet up’,” Kristen smiles. “I want them to relax while I’m working with their child, because the child will borrow their calm when the session ends.”

Parents are also invited to participate in assessments and gentle check-ins. “Many times, I’ll see from the data that a parent is overwhelmed, stressed or even depressed,” Kristen notes. “So I’ll offer little strategies such as journaling, breathing tools, even just that time to rest while their child is in session. It’s about nurturing the whole system around the child.”

Kristen is passionate about educating not only parents but also schools, NDIS professionals, and the wider community about the value of Play Therapy. She regularly consults with schools to equip teachers with a more therapeutic approach.

“It’s about equipping teachers to be able to identify whether a child might be having something bigger going on. Guiding teachers on how to approach the child and that situation with empathy; how to understand that every behaviour is an unmet need and it’s their way of communicating that,” says Kristen. “I truly believe there is no such thing as a problem child, just a child struggling with a problem.”

HELPING CHILDREN TO THRIVE

Every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported. And for many, Play Therapy is the key that unlocks healing and growth.

“Play Therapy isn’t just about fixing problems,” Kristen says. “It’s about helping children build the resilience, confidence, and self-awareness they need to thrive. Not just now, but into the future.”

If your child is struggling to express their emotions, facing social challenges, or simply needs a safe space to work through big feelings, Play Therapy may be the gentle, powerful support they need.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful conversations don’t happen with words.

Release Their Wild Side

at Thunderbird Park this spring!

Can you imagine stepping into a rainforest as the morning sun warms the trees above? Your kids are wide-eyed, eager to run, climb and explore. You can feel it the moment you arrive. Thunderbird Park is a place where imagination knows no limits and every child’s wild side can be unleashed.

Can you hear the laughter as your family heads to the TreeTop Challenge? Tiny hands grip ropes, feet wobble across swinging bridges and hearts race with each daring step. Up high in the trees, your kids feel fearless, climbing, balancing and discovering what they’re capable of. Every squeal, every cheer, every victorious grin fills the rainforest with energy.

After climbing and racing through the treetops, stop and refuel at The Terrace for a quick bite. Perhaps a warm pastry, a refreshing juice or a hearty sandwich to top up

little adventurers before the next activity. The smell of fresh coffee and baked treats fills the air, while kids chatter excitedly about their triumphs in the trees.

Next, head over to DIGIT, Australia’s first mini excavator park. Your little engineers don helmets and take control of their own diggers, scooping, lifting and moving sand with focused delight. The rumble of engines, the clank of buckets and the triumphant shouts as towers come down create a lively soundtrack. Or maybe they opt for something a bit different and try their hand at crystal panning, sifting through sand to find sparkling treasures. Both experiences are hands-on, fuel imagination and are endlessly exciting.

After a full day of climbing, digging and laughter, it’s time to relax. The glamping tents at Tamborine Mountain Glades are just a blissful stroll away and offer a cosy retreat

surrounded by nature. Soft bedding, warm decor and the sounds of the forest make it easy to unwind. This is where families gather around the firepit, roasting marshmallows, sharing stories or enjoying a BBQ dinner together. The aroma of sizzling food blends with the cool evening air, leaving everyone feeling content, full and happy.

As darkness falls, stars twinkle overhead. Your children curl up in their beds, exhausted but glowing from a day packed with adventure. You lean back, breathing in the cool, eucalyptus-scented air, feeling the quiet joy of a family day spent together. This is more than just a fun outing; it’s a chance to reconnect, explore nature and create memories that last a lifetime.

Thunderbird Park is a place where kids can be brave, curious and free. It's a spot where families laugh, connect and share unforgettable moments. By the end of the day, hearts are full, stories are ready to be shared and everyone leaves with the magic of the mountain imprinted in their memory. THUNDERBIRDPARK.COM

Unplugged and Thriving at The Lakes College Year 10 Camp

At The Lakes College in North Lakes, resilience, belonging and connection are woven into the student experience through a robust Outdoor Education Program. Beginning as early as Year 3, the College’s Camp Program plays a pivotal role in shaping the character, wellbeing and identity of its students. By providing opportunities for unique experiences away from home, TLC fosters learners who are both resilient and ready to navigate life’s challenges.

The pinnacle of this program is the Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp – a two-week journey designed to stretch students beyond their comfort zones and inspire personal growth. Strategically placed at the beginning of the Senior Secondary years, the camp provides a powerful foundation, leading into the Year 11 Leadership Camp and culminating in the introspective Year 12 Camp, where students reflect on “What is your story?”

Held at Mt Binga Outdoor Education Centre in rural Queensland, the Year 10 camp is far removed from the usual comforts of home. With no technology, students embrace a slower, more intentional way of living: collecting eggs for breakfast, milking cows, preparing meals and

washing clothes. Communication with parents is limited to handwritten letters, reinforcing the value of thoughtful connection.

Each day brings activities that nurture resilience, teamwork and self-reliance. From tending gardens and caring for animals to horse riding and completing a challenging three-day bush hike, students step into leadership roles, lean on their peers and grow in independence and empathy.

many experiences designed to shape not just learners, but capable, compassionate young people ready to thrive.

Far from a holiday, Mt Binga is designed as an environment for growth. Early mornings, physical challenges and community living teach perseverance and accountability, with camp staff consistently praising TLC students for their maturity, positivity and willingness to fully embrace the experience.

The Year 10 Camp is more than an adventure – it is a transformative journey that strengthens resilience, deepens connections and equips students to enter their Senior years with confidence and purpose. For students at TLC, a Prep to Year 12 co-educational, independent school in North Lakes, it is one of

“Mt Binga challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone to build resilience and independence in ways I haven’t experienced before. At first, I was concerned about adjusting to such a different lifestyle, but it taught me to appreciate the opportunities I am given and made me feel so grateful for all things in life. Most importantly, the camp helped me strengthen my sense of belonging within my cohort, while creating new and lasting connections.” – Year 10 student.

AND HOW TO PLAN THEM WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND

Planning a family holiday is supposed to be exciting. But between school drop-offs, work meetings and sports practice, who has the time to scroll through 500 different hotel options or work out the best route through Japan with a stroller?

That’s where someone like Amy Gratton comes in. A family travel specialist at Sonia Jones Travel, Amy spends her days doing what most of us put in the too-hard basket: making holidays with kids easy.

“With the internet, there’s just too much information,” Amy says. “You look up Fiji and you’re hit with 10,000 options. We simplify all that. We tailor your holiday based on what your family actually wants and needs.”

Amy’s not just talking the talk. With two kids of her own (aged 10 and 12), and more than 20 years in the travel industry, she’s been everywhere from the Maldives to Mildura — and knows exactly how to build a trip that keeps everyone from toddlers to teens happy.

WHY BOOK WITH A TRAVEL AGENT?

There’s a growing trend of time-poor parents ditching DIY planning and going back to human experts — especially when those experts know how to handle everything from multi-generational trips to toddler meltdowns on layovers.

“It’s so time-consuming trying to plan it yourself — and that’s if everything goes right,”

Amy says. “We’re there to help when things go wrong, too, like flight cancellations or missed connections. We’ve got the inside knowledge to fix things fast.”

Plus, every Sonia Jones Travel booking comes with a custom travel app, meaning no more folders full of printed itineraries. “The app shows your day-by-day plans, live flight updates, and even if your gate has changed at the airport. It’s all electronic and all in one place,” Amy says. “And if something does go wrong, you just message us on WhatsApp — no waiting on hold with an airline chatbot.”

The agency is also committed to sustainable travel, and the paperless process is just one small part of that ethos. It’s a streamlined, personal, and planet-friendly approach that brings real peace of mind — especially for busy parents.

WHERE TO GO: AMY’S TOP FAMILY PICKS RIGHT NOW

So, where does a family travel pro recommend booking right now? According to Amy, three destinations are topping the list: Japan, Fiji, and the unexpected rising star — Sri Lanka.

1. JAPAN

“Japan is still really hot for us,” Amy says. “It’s family-oriented, super safe, and the public transport is phenomenal — everything runs on time, colour-coded, and really clean.”

Families can enjoy everything from Tokyo’s anime scene to skiing in Hokkaido. Universal Studios, tech museums, and culture-rich neighbourhoods mean every age group is entertained. Plus, the direct flight from Brisbane to Tokyo makes it even more appealing.

2. FIJI

Just a short flight from Australia, Fiji is a no-brainer for families. “It has something for everyone,” Amy says. “You can go resort-style on the Coral Coast with ATVs and village visits, or head to an outer island where you take your shoes off and don’t see them for a week.”

Fiji’s warmth isn’t just in the weather.

“Fijians are the most welcoming people,” she says. “The nannies are incredible, and the kids’ clubs aren’t just colouring-in — they’re out planting coral, weaving baskets, and snorkelling. Your kids are having the time of their lives, and you get to have a glass of champagne on a sun lounger.”

It’s also ideal for multi-generational trips, with plenty to keep everyone — from toddlers to grandparents — engaged and comfortable.

3. SRI LANKA

Amy predicts this destination is about to boom. “Sri Lanka is going to be the next hot place,” she says. “It’s perfect for people who’ve already done Thailand or Malaysia and want

something a bit different.”

She speaks from personal experience. “We did everything — temples, elephant safaris, leopard spotting, cooking classes in tiny villages. My kids didn’t touch their devices the whole time because there was always something to do.”

Sri Lanka also offers flexibility — from fast seven-day tours to relaxed beach weeks on the south coast. “It’s culturally rich, the food is amazing, and it’s really easy to get around,” Amy adds.

SMART TRAVEL TIPS FROM A PRO MUM

With two well-travelled kids of her own, Amy knows what it takes to survive — and even enjoy — long-haul family travel. Her go-to tips?

• Snacks. “ Lots of snacks. Most kids don’t like in-flight meals.”

• Decent headphones. “Forget the scratchy airline ones. Get proper, comfortable ones that actually fit kids’ heads.”

• A pack of cards. “Even screen-loving kids get bored of their devices eventually. Cards work for every age.”

• Spare clothes. “You never know when you’ll get delayed.”

• Involve the kids. “I always ask my kids for two or three things they’d love to do. If they help plan it, they get more excited about the trip.”

Whether it’s finding a cricket stadium in Sri Lanka for a sport-mad teen or balancing temples with surf beaches, Amy believes the best holidays happen when everyone gets a say.

Mud, Sweat & Smiles

Why Moreton Bay Spartan is the ultimate family weekend this spring.

Mark your calendars for 11–12 October 2025 because Woodfordia is set to get muddy, loud and full of energy as the Spartan Moreton Bay Obstacle Event Weekend lands. Yes, there’ll be sweat, dirt and plenty of climbing, but above all, it’s a weekend designed for families to move, play and thrive together.

Spartan is known worldwide as the ultimate obstacle racing experience — think crawling under nets, splashing through creeks, scaling walls and running through open paddocks. For the adults, there are three epic challenges to choose from: the Sprint (5km, 20 obstacles), the Super (10km, 25 obstacles) or the mighty Beast (21km, 30 obstacles). Each course is challenging, no doubt, but also an incredible

But here’s the best part: Spartan isn’t just for grown-ups. The Spartan Kids Race is a highlight of the weekend, giving children aged 4 to 14 their very own muddy adventure. The course spans 1–3km and packs in 10 to 20 obstacles designed just for younger bodies — plenty of climbing, crawling and sliding, with an average finish time of about half an hour. There are open categories for ages 4 to 14, plus competitive races for ages 9 to 11 and 12 to 14.

It’s not just a race — it’s a chance for kids to discover what they’re capable of. They’ll get muddy, they’ll laugh, and they’ll surprise themselves with just how strong and determined they can be.

WHY KIDS SHOULD SPARTAN

Let’s be honest, childhood today can be a little screen-heavy. Spartan flips that on its head. It’s all about movement, teamwork and resilience. Kids learn that slipping off an obstacle isn’t failure, it’s part of the fun... and getting back up is what counts. They experience the joy of outdoor play, the thrill of physical challenge, and the boost of confidence that comes from crossing that finish line. And while they’re busy building grit and determination, they’re also having the time of their lives.

FITNESS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Whether you’re signing up for the Beast, cheering from the sidelines, or running alongside your mini Spartan, the Moreton Bay weekend is about more than just racing. It’s about connection, community and showing your kids that fitness is fun, no matter your age. Mud washes off. Memories of conquering Spartan as a family? Those stick forever. au.spartan.com/en/races/moretonbay

Family, flavour and the perfect snag

Family favourite George’s Gourmet Meats celebrates one year of quality and community at Cleveland Central.

From award-winning sausages to handpicked weekly specials, George’s Gourmet Meats at Cleveland Central has become more than just a butcher — it’s a family hub. As owner George marks the store’s first anniversary, he shares the story of how passion, quality and a lot of family teamwork have made his little shop a big part of the local community.

GEORGE, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN GEORGE’S GOURMET MEATS AT CLEVELAND CENTRAL?

Thank you! Ever since I started butchering, I’ve dreamed of owning my own shop. After years of managing for others, it felt like the right time to do it for myself.

I’ve worked in some of Brisbane’s best butcheries, learning from incredible mentors, and I’ve always been committed to offering only the very best — from the meats we source to the way we prepare them. Cleveland is such a warm, community-focused place with a love for quality, so it was the perfect fit.

WHAT SPARKED YOUR PASSION FOR BUTCHERY?

I came to butchery a little later, at 24, after trying a few jobs that didn’t quite click. I’ve always loved food, cooking and connecting with people, so this industry felt like home. That passion has only grown.

YOU’VE MADE YOUR ANNIVERSARY A FAMILY AFFAIR. WHY IS FAMILY SUCH A BIG PART OF THE BUSINESS?

When we opened, I thought I’d be here seven days a week on my own. Instead, I had incredible help — my dad, father-in-law, brother, wife, mates, even our neighbour — all pitching in. Our shop manager, Hunter, is like family too. Having loved ones involved keeps us grounded, connected to our customers, and focused on what local families need.

YOUR SNAGS ARE AWARDWINNING! TELL US ABOUT THE SAUSAGE KING SUCCESS. We entered on a whim the week we opened and walked away with 3rd best Continental Sausage for our Pork Hot Links and 2nd best Poultry Sausage for our Chicken Parmy. Our customers love the variety — over 60 flavours that change every fortnight — and they’re all made in-house from fresh ingredients.

WHAT MAKES SHOPPING AT GEORGE’S GOURMET MEATS SPECIAL?

We source the best — Tasmanian lamb, Bangalow pork, grass-fed Queensland beef, free-range chicken from Mt Cotton — and bone, smoke, and prepare everything inhouse.

But more than that, it’s the friendly service. You’ll always get a smile, a chat, and genuine interest in how your family’s going.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GEORGE’S?

We’re working towards being Queensland’s first small-scale butcher to make salamis inhouse. Plus, we’ve teamed up with Extraction Artisan Coffee for creations like coffee bacon and coffee sausages. Yum!

Social Media Ban Looms

TIME TO RESET AND RECONNECT

From December, new restrictions will change the way kids use social media in Australia. And while the idea of less screen time might feel daunting (for kids and parents alike), experts say it’s also the perfect chance to hit reset and rediscover real-life connections at home.

Parenting specialists from the Triple P –Positive Parenting Program admit there’s no magic formula for getting it right. Even adults struggle with switching off. But as Carol Markie-Dadds, Triple P International Country Director, explains, what matters most is finding the “power-down” strategy that works for your family.

“We are parenting in a digital age, so parents and carers can view this current challenge as a teachable moment to support kids to develop healthy, lifelong digital habits,” she says.

It’s no surprise that many families are feeling the pressure. Triple P’s National Parenting Pulse Survey found 85% of parents

argue with their children about social media use, and almost eight in ten worry about its impact on their child’s mental health.

But here’s the surprising news: kids want more face-to-face time, too. A national survey by Act for Kids found two in five children aged 10 to 16 actually prefer hanging out with family in person, compared to just 15% who favour digital

interaction. Three-quarters said they feel most connected when simply talking about their day IRL — even though almost half spend more than an hour chatting online.

That’s why Act for Kids has launched the Let’s Connect IRL (In Real Life) campaign, codesigned with children themselves, to remind parents that it’s the little moments that count. Whether it’s chatting in the car, sitting nearby while they’re online, or making device-free time part of the family routine, being present matters more than we think.

As Markie-Dadds points out, creating a safe, judgment-free home where kids feel comfortable sharing their worries not only helps with this digital transition but also strengthens relationships for the teenage years ahead.

Families looking for extra guidance can access free, 24/7 support at triplep-parenting. net.au, and find updates on the new legislation at esafety.gov.au.

Quick tips for connecting IRL

• START SMALL: Swap 10 minutes of scrolling for a walk, snack break or chat together.

• BE PRESENT: Sit nearby while your child is online — most kids say it helps them feel supported.

• MAKE IT ROUTINE: Try a daily device-free meal or bedtime catch-up.

• JOIN IN: Ask about their online world, then share yours. Kids value when adults show genuine interest.

Quick & easy CHICKEN & ZUCCHINI PATTIES

Looking for a healthy dinner the whole family will enjoy? These quick and easy chicken and zucchini patties are a weeknight winner. Packed with protein and sneaky veggies, they’re simple to prep and ready to serve in just 30 minutes— perfect for busy nights when you want something nutritious and kid-approved.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 medium zucchini, grated

• 2 tsp salt, divided

• 500g chicken mince (you can also use turkey mince)

• 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

• 1/4 cup green onions or chives, finely sliced

• 1 large egg

• 2 cloves garlic, pressed

• 225g ricotta cheese

METHOD

1. Place zucchini in a colander or bowl. Sprinkle grated zucchini with 1 tsp of salt and let stand for 10 minutes. Then, squeeze out as much juice as possible from the zucchini, squeezing it out by the fistful to extract as much juice as you can. (You'll be amazed how much juice actually comes out of the zucchini.) Transfer the drained zucchini to a large bowl. Discard drained juice.

2. Add chicken, salt, pepper, green onions or chives, egg, garlic and ricotta cheese and mix together.

3. Heat a large non-stick frying pan or skillet over medium heat and add 3-4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Take a heaped tablespoon of the mixture and shape it into a round patty about 0.5cm thick. Cook uncovered over medium heat for 3 minutes, then flip, cover, and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until cooked through.

4. Add more oil to the pan as needed for subsequent batches.

Can Sammy learn how to manage his feelings and return to his usual colour?

Tom Percival’s Big Bright Feelings series is the ideal starting point for discussions about mental and emotional health, positive self-image, building self-confidence and managing feelings.
