Where Nature Meets Play DISCOVER HISTORIC RIVERMILL

Perched on the banks of the Coomera River, Historic Rivermill has long been part of the Gold Coast hinterland landscape. But under new ownership, it’s been reimagined with families in mind o ering unforgettable animal encounters, riverside dining, and wide-open spaces perfect for kids to run free.

From turtle spotting to horse riding, this hidden gem has quickly become one of the region’s must-do family adventures.

A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER

What sets Historic Rivermill apart is its wild

turtle experience. Nowhere else in Australia can families watch freshwater turtles swim right up to the riverbank. Kids squeal with delight as the turtles appear, creating magical moments that feel straight out of a storybook.

But the turtles are just the beginning. Alpacas, goats, pigs, ducks, and horses ll the farmyard, ready for hand-feeding or a gentle pat. For little animal lovers, the petting zoo is a highlight — safe, interactive, and designed to help children connect with nature.

“Love this place so much! !e scones are the best I’ve ever eaten, and my daughter adores the turtles and alpacas.” — Kirsty, visitor.

A HUB FOR YOUNG RIDERS

One of Rivermill’s newest additions is the Equestrian Academy, giving local kids and teens the chance to learn horse riding with expert trainers. e star of the stables is the Peruvian Paso horse, famous for its smooth, gentle gait and perfect for beginners.

Rides range from 8-minute try-outs for curious little ones to 1-hour scenic rides through riverside tracks. Parents can even book a private ride-and-picnic experience for two, making it more than just a kids’ activity.

“!e horses were calm, beautifully cared for, and the riding trails by the creek were stunning. I left feeling grounded and completely relaxed.” — Stephanie, visitor.

MAGICAL BIRTHDAY PARTIES

Looking for a birthday party that’s more than just cake and balloons? Rivermill makes celebrations easy with packages that combine food, space, and activities. Kids can enjoy pony rides, face painting, and alpaca feeding while parents relax by the river.

With outdoor lawns and undercover areas, it’s a stress-free venue no matter the weather.

e menu features locally-sourced ingredients, hearty café favourites, and a standout Devonshire tea, with scones piled high with jam, cream, and marmalade.

“Great place! Delicious food, lovely sta!, and plenty of space for kids to play. e river views are stunning.” — John, visitor.

EDUCATION MEETS ADVENTURE

Historic Rivermill isn’t only for weekenders. School groups are welcome, with programs designed to combine education and fun. From learning about animal care to turtle ecology, these experiences turn the property into an open-air classroom.

It’s also a go-to spot for local community events, team-building activities, and weddings,

Welcome to our Summer Issue!

Here we are… summer.

!e big one. !e season where we collectively lose our minds a little while trying to keep the magic alive. Phew. It’s a lot.

But it’s also the best kind of chaos. !e season of connection, laughter, and sticky sunscreen hugs. !e time when memories are made between wrapping paper and road trips, when we (try to) nd joy in the small things: a tantrum-free beach day, a spontaneous bake-o , a day that somehow ows.

If you’re after something fun and wholesome for the kids, we’ve got the lowdown on the Little Lifesavers program — one of the best ways for kids to stay active, con dent and safe at the beach this summer.

In this summer issue, we’re celebrating exactly that. We check in at BIG4 Gold Coast to explore their new luxury safari retreats and discover why this epic holiday park is topping every family’s must-do list for 2026.

Still Christmas shopping? Our huge Christmas Gift Guide is brimming with thoughtful, local nds. And for the long days ahead, we’ve packed in plenty of fresh ideas to keep boredom at bay.

Plus, looking ahead, we have exciting news: the 2026 Education Fair dates are locked in — including a brand-new Gold Coast event!

Year 9 Students Win 2025 Premier’s Coding Challenge with Under-the-Sea Game

Mark Your Calendars!

2026 Education Fair Dates Announced

Parents, educators, and students — get ready! The much-loved Education Fair is returning in 2026, with three major events confirmed across Southeast Queensland.

UPCOMING DATES:

Brisbane | Nissan Arena: 23 May 2026

Sunshine Coast | UniSC Arena: 25 July 2026

Gold Coast | Runaway Bay Stadium: 17 March 2027

The Education Fair is Southeast Queensland’s leading education expo. This one-of-a-kind event brings together providers from every stage of a child’s learning journey, all under one roof. From early learning

centres and tutoring programs to primary, secondary, and tertiary education, families can explore a world of options in one convenient, welcoming space.

Created by parents, for parents, the Fair was designed to make the process of choosing the right education pathway easier and far more enjoyable. With interactive workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and come-andtry sessions, kids can get involved while parents connect directly with educators and experts. For educators and providers, it’s a must-do event to showcase programs, meet families faceto-face, and join a community passionate about learning. Whether you’re exploring kindy options, homeschooling,

Two of The Lakes College’s talented Year 9 students, Pristine and Aeryn, have claimed first place in their category in the 2025 Premier’s Coding Challenge, an outstanding achievement that highlights both their creativity and their passion for solving real-world problems through technology. Their winning entry was developed as part of their Year 9 Creative Coding assessment, where students were challenged to design a game with purpose and impact.

Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the boys created an engaging under-the-sea themed game “Aquatic Adventures” that raises awareness about ocean pollution. Players collect rubbish to help restore the marine environment, an idea driven by their desire to shine a light on environmental issues affecting oceans today. As they shared in their video

submission, the goal was “not just coding a game, but coding something that can lead to real life impact,” a sentiment that encapsulates the power of technology as a tool for change.

For Aeryn, the challenge opened the door to developing new technical skills, including learning pixel art, creating sprite sheets and working with the Godot game engine. Pristine is particularly proud of the user interface he designed and said the experience has strengthened his desire to pursue game development further.

Both boys are excited to keep expanding their coding skills, and the College is incredibly proud of their achievement, an inspiring example of learning, creativity and social awareness coming together to make a meaningful impact.

Pitch Perfect

The ultimate in glamping, family style

Can families really have it all on holiday — camping adventures, holiday celebrations AND resort-style luxury? We check out the new safari retreats at BIG4 Gold Coast to find out.

Camping has always held a certain simplistic charm. Fresh air, starry nights, enjoying the outdoors and slowing down. Plus, it has always been a budget-friendly way for families to unwind from the world and reconnect with each other. But let’s be honest: it also comes with a fair share of inconveniences. Wrestling with tent poles, braving a midnight dash to the amenities block, or cramming the car with everything from air mattresses to eskies doesn’t exactly scream ‘holiday’ for the grown-ups!

But, with the perfect fusion of luxury and adventure, glamping offers families the joy of the outdoors with all the creature comforts of

a boutique stay. And on the Gold Coast, the new safari retreats at BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park take camping to another level, seamlessly blending a nature-immersed experience with high-end design.

No caravan. No stress. Just a glass of wine in hand, the kids happily exploring, and you relaxing on the deck overlooking Saltwater Creek. This isn’t just camping… It’s outdoor holidays reimagined.

STEP

INSIDE THE FAMILY SAFARI RETREAT

The first surprise about BIG4’s safari retreats is that they barely resemble tents at all. Sure, the canvas exterior gives a nod to the traditional

camping set-up, but step inside and you’re greeted with a thoughtfully designed retreat. Sleeping up to six, the tents feature a queen bed, two single beds, and a bunk bed, making them ideal for families with a mix of little ones and older children.

Each tent has been custom-built with style in mind, with saloon-style timber doors, custom furniture, and a clever bed nook that feels both cosy and fun for kids. A full bathroom (yes, with proper plumbing) means hot showers on demand, and the well-appointed kitchenette has everything from a fridge and microwave to cutlery, crockery and even a toaster.

But, like all camping escapes, it’s outside where the magic really happens, and the safari

retreats do not disappoint. The deck comes complete with a sumptuous outdoor lounge for lazy afternoons. Relax under the open sky while birds chatter in the trees gives these new retreats their x-factor.

For families, this set-up means comfort for the adults and adventure for the kids. Parents can relax with a view over the river, while children still get that camping thrill of being “out in nature.” And unlike traditional camping, you won’t be sacrificing a good night’s sleep. Reverse-cycle air conditioning keeps the space comfortable year-round, and with all linen included, there’s no last-minute scramble to pack sheets or towels.

The busy holiday park has also added

two 3-Bedroom Deluxe Retreats (sleep 10) and two 2-Bedroom Villas to its growing accommodation options, making it an option for even more families this summer.

BEYOND THE TENTS AT BIG4 GOLD COAST

Of course, a stay at BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is about more than just where you sleep. This is a destination that’s built for families. At the heart of the park is the water park, a towering play structure boasting more than 300 metres of slides. From twisting aquatubes to the multi-lane racer slide, kids of all ages (and their parents) will happily spend hours here. The tipping bucket is a favourite with

Safari Retreat HIGHLIGHTS

• Sleeps up to six (queen bed, two singles, bunk bed)

• Ensuite bathroom with hot shower, shampoo and conditioner included

• Kitchenette with fridge, microwave, crockery and cooking utensils

• Reverse-cycle air conditioning and heating

kids, and the poolside cabanas with QR code ordering are a highlight for the parents.

Beside the water park is a tropical resort-style pool and spa, perfect for families who prefer a slower pace. The pool is heated for year-round swimming, while the oversized spa offers the ultimate unwind after a busy day exploring.

Younger children aren’t forgotten either, with an eco-friendly playground made from recycled materials. Featuring climbing nets, swings, a double cableway and even bouldering blocks, it encourages active play while teaching little ones about sustainability.

When hunger strikes, the on-site Nibbles Café is a saviour for parents who’d rather skip the cooking. Serving

COME EASTER, FAMILIES CAN HOP INTO A WORLD OF PASTEL-COLOURED DELIGHTS WITH THE PARK’S ANNUAL EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA.

everything from stone-fired pizzas and burgers to seafood specials and a solid kids’ menu, it’s relaxed, affordable, and family-friendly. For those who prefer to whip up a meal themselves, the camp kitchen and BBQ areas are large, wellequipped and perfect for a communal cook-up. And the fun doesn’t stop there. BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park also offers a full-size basketball court, frisbee golf, a giant jumping pillow, and the delightful Magic Express train ride, which winds its way through the park’s leafy grounds. Add in free WiFi, spotless amenities, and a commercial-size laundry

(with complimentary detergent), and you’ve got a park that blends convenience with entertainment.

Perhaps best of all, the location couldn’t be more convenient. Just minutes from the Gold Coast’s biggest attractions — Warner Bros. Movie World, Wet’n’Wild, Dreamworld and Australian Outback Spectacular — it’s the ultimate launchpad for a family adventure. Yet, because the park sits on 32 acres of landscaped grounds, it still feels tucked away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

CELEBRATING EVERY SEASON

In addition to the regular activities and entertainment on offer, BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park goes all out for every special occasion, transforming the park into a festive hub throughout the year.

At Christmas, the park becomes a sunkissed tropical wonderland. Guests can stroll beneath twinkling lights, join in Christmas crafts and ornament-making, and decorate their cabin or campsite to spread the cheer.

Santa himself drops by for photos and festive wishes, while outdoor movies and balmy summer nights make it a Christmas celebration like no other.

Come Easter, families can hop into a world of pastel-coloured delights with the park’s annual Easter Extravaganza. Kids can take part in egg hunts, meet the Easter Bunny, and join in creative crafts, games, and even a costume parade. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the long weekend and welcome the new season in true family style.

Halloween brings a playful dose of spooky fun as the park transforms into a realm of eerie enchantment, with trick-or-treat trails, spooky decorations, ghoulish arts and crafts, and the always-popular Monster Mash disco. Guests are encouraged to decorate their sites or cabins and join in the frightfully fun spirit of the night.

And when New Year’s Eve rolls around, BIG4 Gold Coast makes sure families ring in the new year with a bang — literally — with food trucks, live entertainment, a DJ disco, and a dazzling fireworks display that lights up the summer sky.

So, is it really possible to combine the best of camping with a great holiday for everyone? At BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park, the answer is a resounding yes.

Raising Little Lifesavers for a Safer Summer

As the weather warms up and families flock to the beach, programs like Little Lifesavers are helping kids learn essential water safety skills, and have a whole lot of fun along the way.

From backyard pools to weekends at the beach, water is part of the Australian way of life. For many families, summer means sand between the toes, boogie boards under arms, and long days chasing waves. But with that comes an unavoidable truth: our love of the water also brings risk.

Despite decades of awareness campaigns, drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children. Surf Life Saving Australia’s statistics show that many incidents happen close to home, often in familiar places where families feel most comfortable.

That’s why water safety education is something every parent should take seriously, and why programs like Little Lifesavers are becoming a summer must-do.

REAL SKILLS FOR REAL SITUATIONS

Run by Surf Life Saving Queensland, Little Lifesavers is designed for kids aged 5 to 12 who want to have fun while learning practical lifesaving skills. But this isn’t your typical swim school. It’s a hands-on, sandy, splashy introduction to the world of surf lifesaving — one that blends education with adventure.

Across two or five days, participants dive into activities that teach them how to stay safe and confident around the water. They learn to read beach signs, spot rips, and understand

surf conditions, while also gaining rescue skills like reach-and-throw techniques and recovery positions. They’ll paddle boards, race through beach games, and even practise CPR awareness, all under the guidance of trained lifesavers who know precisely how to keep learning light-hearted but meaningful.

“Little Lifesavers is all about keeping kids safe, active, and confident in and around the water — while having a lot of fun along the way.”

MORE THAN JUST FUN IN THE SUN

The idea is simple: make safety second nature. When kids understand how waves move, what flags mean, or how to get help if they’re in trouble, they not only protect themselves, they also learn to look out for others.

The program’s organisers say that’s the goal: to build confidence and respect for the ocean from an early age.

“Little Lifesavers is all about keeping kids safe, active, and confident in and around the water, while having a lot of fun along the way,” says Callan Lovitt, Head of Lifeguard Operations from Surf Life Saving Queensland.

The benefits ripple well beyond the shoreline. Parents often notice a boost in

independence and teamwork, while kids gain a sense of pride knowing they’re learning skills used by real lifesavers. It’s physical, social, and practical … all rolled into one.

A SUMMER PROGRAM THAT FITS EVERY FAMILY

Little Lifesavers runs as both a two-day and five-day program, giving families flexibility during the busy holiday season. Programs are held at beaches, rivers, and even pools across Queensland, so there’s likely one close to home.

• Five-day program: $180 (new participants) / $160 (returning)

• Two-day program: $165 (new participants) / $150 (returning)

New participants also receive a rash shirt and welcome pack, helping them feel like part of the team from day one. The program is registered as a Play On! activity, making it easy for families to use recreation vouchers or credits toward the cost.

WHY IT MATTERS

Australia’s coastline is breathtaking, but it demands respect. Every year, surf lifesavers perform thousands of rescues, and the vast majority involve people who didn’t recognise the danger until it was too late.

By giving kids the knowledge and confidence to assess conditions, understand warning signs, and make safe choices, programs like Little Lifesavers are helping to shape a safer generation of beachgoers.

Some graduates even go on to join their local Surf Life Saving Club as nippers or volunteers, turning early lessons into a lifelong connection with the ocean.

A SUMMER THAT STICKS

Parents often look for activities that will keep kids busy and off screens over summer, but it’s rare to find one that’s genuinely life-changing. Little Lifesavers manages to do both. It’s fun, it’s physical, and it gives kids skills they’ll carry with them for life.

So while your family’s packing towels, sunscreen, and snacks for another day by the water, consider adding something extra to your summer plans — a few days that could make all the difference.

Because learning to love the beach starts with learning how to stay safe on it.

GIGI

WYNTER CHARLI AUDREY

Tiny stars take centre stage at Circus Fun House, Gold Coast

From playgrounds to the professional stage, meet the kids who are living every child’s dream of joining the circus.

Ever dreamed of joining the circus?

For a talented bunch of local kids, that dream has become reality. Each week, these young performers take to the stage at Circus Fun House, dazzling audiences with their energy, skill, and infectious joy.

LIFE UNDER THE BIG TOP

For ten-year-old Audrey, the stage has been part of her world since before she even started school.

“I started dancing at Sheridan Studio 1 when I was three and a half,” she says. “I’ve just always loved dancing, so Mum didn’t really have a choice!”

Now a Circus Fun House regular, Audrey says performing alongside her best friends is “my absolute favourite thing ever.” She dreams of one day becoming a professional dancer, maybe even on a cruise ship so she can “travel the world.”

Fellow performer Gigi, also ten, admits the moments before a show are a cocktail of

nerves and excitement.

“I feel both excited and nervous. Nervous because you don’t know if you’re going to make a mistake and there are a lot of people in the audience. But I also get excited because it is so much fun.”

And her verdict on circus life? “Best job ever.”

FINDING THEIR FEET (AND SOMETIMES UPSIDE DOWN)

Eleven-year-old Wynter says the show’s opening is her highlight: “I love opening the show where we come out and see everyone’s smiling faces.”

Unlike traditional dance recitals, Circus Fun House blends acrobatics, comedy, and theatre with dance. “It feels different because I’m dancing with the other circus performers, and we can have fun with each other on the stage and interact with the crowd.”

Rehearsals aren’t without their laughs. “The other circus performers try to teach us their tricks, which don’t always go to plan,”

Wynter grins. “We also try to talk in their funny voices.”

Already learning aerial silks and handstands, Wynter has her eyes set on Broadway. “I’d love to be part of a Broadway show. I also love silks, so who knows!”

Charli, aged ten, says the trickiest part is juggling school, friends, and circus life.

“It’s a pretty tight routine most weeks, but hanging with my friends at dancing is half the fun. Homework is easy, I just do it all in one night, so it’s done for the week.” Luckily, her school friends are her biggest cheerleaders.

“They think it’s really cool and a lot come to the show to support me.”

BIG DREAMS, BIG ENERGY

Each child has a vision for the future, from acro tricks and hip hop, to jazz, tap, or even performing overseas. Different as their ambitions may be, they share one thing: a love of performing. Whether it’s Broadway lights, cruise ship stages, or just one more Friday night at Circus Fun House, these kids are proof that sometimes childhood dreams aren’t about “one day.” Sometimes, they’re happening right now ... under the bright circus lights.

visitors to see the world differently. His work blurs the line between art and experience, encouraging you to look, move, and even feel your way through the gallery. From the moment you enter, it’s not just about seeing art — it’s about being part of it.

Across GOMA’s ground floor galleries, families can explore a series of installations that play with perception, light, and nature. Beauty (1993) shimmers with a rainbow suspended in a fine mist, while Pluriverse assembly (2021) bathes the room in shifting reflections of light.

Two family favourites also return for this exhibition. In Riverbed (2014), kids can wander through a rocky landscape complete with running water — a mesmerising mix of art and natural play for all ages.

Then there’s The cubic structural evolution project (2004), an enormous, all-white LEGO city that children (and parents) help build and rebuild, transforming the artwork with every visit.

Eliasson’s Icelandic heritage shines throughout, with striking photographs capturing the country’s elemental beauty.

This is an exhibition to experience together. Whether your little ones are mesmerised by misty rainbows or elbowdeep in LEGO bricks, Olafur Eliasson: Presence is a must-do for families this summer.

Feels Like Home

Inside Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Maudsland WhereConnection

At the heart of the Maudsland community lies a place where connection, care, and calm blend effortlessly into every day. Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Maudsland is more than a childcare centre — it’s a home-away-from-home where families feel genuinely welcomed, and children are nurtured to grow with confidence, curiosity, and joy.

For Centre Director Michaella, connection

isn’t a slogan; it’s a living, breathing practice that shapes every moment. As a foundation team member, and a mother of two children who also attended Sanctuary Maudsland, Michaella is deeply connected to the Sanctuary experience in every sense.

“Connection is in the way we greet every child and family by name each morning,” she says. “It’s in the laughter we share, the gentle reassurance we offer, and the way our team looks out for each other.”

Each day begins with warm hellos, familiar faces, and genuine interest in how each child is feeling. The team’s daily rituals — from mealtime gatherings to end-of-day goodbyes — build a rhythm of belonging.

Mealtimes, in particular, are special moments. Tables are dressed with soft cloths, flowers and a candle, inviting everyone to slow down and be present. “We sit together and share stories while the children serve themselves,” Michaella explains. “It’s calming, grounding, and full of connection.”

Small-group experiences provide children with space to build friendships, explore, and learn collaboratively. These quieter moments — a shared story, a song, or a giggle in the garden — foster a sense of security that helps each child flourish.

GENTLE BEGINNINGS

Starting care can feel daunting for young children and their families, so Sanctuary Maudsland takes a soft, deliberate approach. Before enrolment, families are invited to Stay & Play sessions to meet educators, explore the rooms, and settle at

their own pace.

“These sessions help families move from visitor to belonging,” says Michaella. “They see the routines, meet the team, and begin to feel part of our community.”

Educators spend one-on-one time with each new child, offering comfort and following their lead. Families share valuable insights — favourite toys, bedtime songs, familiar routines — that help ease the transition between home and care. The result is a child who feels known, secure, and ready to thrive.

SAFE, SEEN AND SUPPORTED

Safety at Sanctuary Maudsland goes far beyond supervision. The team understands, as supported by child development theory, that children cannot learn until they feel safe and secure.

Emotional security is the foundation. Predictable routines, clear expectations, and gentle guidance help children feel safe to explore and express themselves. “We listen to their cues,” Michaella says. “When a child is upset, we stay close and help them work through it with calm and care.”

Quiet sanctuaries throughout the centre give children a peaceful space to pause or recharge. These protected areas allow children to co-regulate with a familiar and nurturing educator. Familiar songs and visual cues mark transitions, helping the day flow with predictability and ease.

Of course, compliance and safety are equally strong — daily playground checks and random studio audits ensure that every environment meets the highest standards.

IT’S IN THE LAUGHTER WE SHARE, THE GENTLE REASSURANCE WE OFFER, AND THE WAY OUR TEAM LOOKS OUT FOR EACH OTHER.

But it’s the emotional layer — the smiles, the soft voices, the trust — that makes this place feel truly safe.

“When you walk in, you can sense it: warmth, calm, belonging. From the peaceful environments to the educators’ interactions, everything says ‘you’re home’.”

TRUST BUILT IN THE EVERYDAY

Trust is cultivated through transparency and follow-through. Families receive genuine updates, not just digital notifications. “Sometimes it’s a quick call to say your child has settled after a tough drop-off,” Michaella shares. “Or a photo message just to brighten a parent’s day.”

Educators are supported in the same spirit. Regular check-ins, professional growth opportunities, and open communication ensure they feel valued and confident.

“When our educators feel supported, they show up as their best selves, and that’s what builds trustworthy care.”

HONOURING EVERY FAMILY

Each family brings their own story, culture, and traditions, and Sanctuary Maudsland embraces them wholeheartedly. Families complete a "My Culture" form to share details about their heritage, routines, and comfort items. Educators weave these into the program through songs, food, and celebrations from home.

“When children see their family culture reflected here, they feel proud and connected,” Michaella explains. “It’s one more way we say ‘you belong’.”

The sense of community stretches

beyond the gates. The team partners with local organisations, inviting them to open days and events, and creates meaningful connections throughout the Maudsland area.

A TRUE VILLAGE

Step into the centre on any given day and you’ll feel the closeness of the team. Educators celebrate milestones together, lend a hand when things get busy, and genuinely care for one another’s wellbeing. “We check in, we laugh, we lift each other up,” Michaella smiles. “It’s not just a workplace, it’s a village.”

Children sense that unity. They watch collaboration, empathy, and kindness modelled all around them, learning what it means to belong to a community built on respect and trust.

HOME, IN EVERY SENSE

Ask what makes Sanctuary Maudsland different, and Michaella doesn’t hesitate.

“The environments are peaceful, the educators are genuine, and every child is met with love and respect. It feels like home.”

For families seeking a place where their child is not only cared for but deeply known, Sanctuary Maudsland offers that rare balance of professionalism and heart. It’s a place where connection isn’t a program, it’s a way of life.

Come and experience the difference for yourself through a free Stay & Play session. Explore, connect, and see why so many families call Sanctuary Maudsland their home for early learning.

You Future

Why every child needs a little more STEM in their life.

If you’ve ever watched your child figure out how to make a paper plane fly straighter or mix the perfect shade of purple with half the craft cupboard, you’ve seen STEM (Science. Technology. Engineering. Maths) in action. These are not just subjects, but the building blocks of how kids make sense of the world.

All kids need STEM in their lives — not to become a scientist one day, but to be happier, more confident, and more capable right now.

That’s precisely why the Future You program was developed. Hosted by UNSW, Future You is a nationwide STEM program designed specifically for children aged 8–12. It’s completely free, family-friendly, and designed to help kids see STEM not as something ‘for other kids,’ but as something relevant, exciting, and genuinely part of their future.

WHY EARLY STEM EXPOSURE MATTERS

Research consistently shows that early engagement in STEM leads to better outcomes — academically, socially, and even emotionally. Kids who think of themselves as ‘good at science’ or ‘confident with numbers’ do better across the board. These mindset shifts start early, and they’re powerful.

And it makes sense. STEM skills aren’t reserved for labs or coding clubs. They’re used every single day:

• Converting measurements while cooking

• Solving problems through trial and error

• Designing the perfect LEGO tower that actually stands up

• Working out the quickest way across the monkey bars

However, if children don’t see the relevance of STEM early and often, they can disengage. And that disengagement is difficult to reverse.

STEREOTYPES ARE STILL SHAPING OUR KIDS

You might think the old ‘scientist in a lab coat’ stereotype is long gone. Unfortunately, not quite.

Across nearly 80 repeats of the famous ‘draw a scientist’ experiment since 1966, where children are asked to draw a scientist, children continue to imagine scientists as predominantly male, primarily white, and working alone. A 2025 study found that 82% of kids drew a male scientist, 86% drew someone Caucasian, and 88% portrayed them working in isolation.

These limiting images matter. Kids absorb the message: STEM isn’t for me.

Children start forming ideas about jobs long before high school. In fact, by the end of primary school, many kids have already ruled out whole career pathways based on stereotypes they’ve picked up from family, school, media and the world around them.

MEET REAL ROLE MODELS WITH PATHFINDERS

Future You introduces kids to real STEM role models, called Pathfinders, who are everyday Australians who use STEM in creative, unexpected, and deeply human ways. Wildlife Conservation Officer, Game Designer, Augmented Reality Expert, Food Scientist.

Career exploration at this age isn’t about choosing a job; it’s about discovering your passions and interests. It’s about building confidence, and nurturing a mindset that says, “I can try things. I can learn things. I can be part of this.”

And the best part? Future You makes it easy … and free. Explore the stories together, dive into the resources, and watch their confidence grow. Their future self will thank you.

Raising kids shouldn’t feel like a solo mission. Yet for many dads, isolation is becoming the norm. On the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane, one grassroots movement is changing that narrative from the ground up.

Dads Community was founded in 2022 by Stephen Hirst, known to many as the ‘Dad Mentor’. A proud father to Taylor and Kai, Stephen created the group during the darkest chapter of his life. After his marriage ended and his family unit fell apart, he found himself overwhelmed, anxious, and questioning whether he was doing enough. “I hit rock bottom,” he says. “I realised if I was feeling this alone, other dads must be too.”

What began as a simple Facebook page quickly grew into a lifeline. A casual BBQ turned into dozens of dads showing up, and today, more than 3,400 fathers across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are part of the community. Stephen even made the bold decision to sell his family home to fully commit to supporting men who are struggling.

The group focuses on prevention and belonging — offering futsal games, walking groups, BBQs, darts, hiking, 4WD days, fishing trips and more. Each event is built around connection, honesty and judgementfree conversations.

“We want dads to feel supported, confident, and part of something meaningful,” Stephen says. “Because when dads thrive, families thrive.”

“Whether you’re navigating the highs or the challenges of parenting, you’re welcome here.”

Dads can join via Facebook at “Dads Community Public.”

“Together, we’re building the village our kids deserve.”
