3KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU SPRING 2022 WELCOME NOW!READ Spring

To get kids off the couch and active this spring, we check out some of the best sports and extra-curricular activities for kids in Brisbane. Learn to swim expert Chris Shapland joins us to chat about his unique and hugely successful approach to teaching kids to swim. We find out why ice skating might be the best way to stay chill this summer, and we take a sneak peek at the new swim club and aquatic centre opening in North Lakes. Plus, nothing says spring like babies! So we also have a Babies Special inside. We chat to women’s health specialists Eve Health about the challenges of secondary infertility, and Parentline joins us with tips on finding your baby village as a new mum. Happy spring!

M y little girl delightedly said to me last week: “Muuuuuum, you know, it’s not long until Christmas!”.Asmuchas I love Christmas, those words hit home just how quickly this year has flown by. How the [bleep] can we be in the run-up to Christmas already?! But she is right. Because once the September school holidays are over and Term 4 kicks in, it’s time for that 12-week plummet towards December 24th (aka ‘collapse in a heap’ day). Despite the kids getting older, it doesn’t seem to get any less frenetic. Whether its childcare Christmas activities or a Year 12 graduation, it’s a busy busy time of year. In an effort to curb the crazy, I’m focusing on cherishing the new season. Because, let’s be honest, it truly is a beautiful time to live in the river city. Sooo… to welcome in the season, this issue we focus on everything spring!

Even recreational sports or activities, such as going to an arcade. It can be [an] encounter with wildlife or nature. Alternatively, it can be more hands on, beauty or wellbeing based.”

“In the last Active Healthy Kids Report, Australian young people and children scored a D minus for overall physical activity. It’s heartbreaking that with such an outdoor and active lifestyle available, we still aren’t meeting national guidelines,” saysWithMelissa.80percent of toys ending up in landfill and the oceans filled with harmful plastics, a big driver for Melissa to launch the site was to encourage Australians to choose better ways for kids to play and create lasting memories.

AN AQUARIUM ADVENTURE! A brand new kids’ experience service with a planet-friendly ethos

If there’s one thing the last few years has taught us, it’s that experiences and quality time are what matter most. A trip to the local adventure playland, unwinding at the day spa, an afternoon on the river... these are some of the things we cherish. Local mum Melissa Soutar has jumped on this trend, launching a new kids’ experiences marketplace.

Grace Lutheran College has opened an innovative new building at its Caboolture campus.

“Guided by experienced and passionate educators, our curriculum encourages children to learn and explore as they grow and develop their confidence, skills and abilities,” says Kirsten Berry, National Operations Manager from Green Leaves Early Learning.

Called The FLEX (Flexible Learning through Exceptional Education) Centre, the building provides an exceptional space for teaching and learning, including a number of modes—from four classrooms to a large open presentation space.

Grade 12 Grace Lutheran student, Isabel, is excited about learning in the new centre. “I feel like the space makes learning unrestricted. The whiteboards cover the walls and the desks are like whiteboards too. So you can just keep going and brainstorm. It’s a different but a really cool new way of taking learning,” says Isabel.

The FLEX Centre

“We wanted four classrooms, but we also wanted spaces where teachers are able to practice different pedagogies. We wanted a space that could open up to do exams and science presentations, and also parent presentations,” says Mr Miles.

THE GREEN DIFFERENCELEAVES

Grade 9 Grace Lutheran student, Hamish, agrees saying, “It feels like the teacher really collaborates more with the group. It is more like they are part of Collaborationus.” for the design of building was key to its success, drawing on input from students and staff to visualise the project.

“We want to keep getting the ideas of people, keep bringing it together because the collaboration has been absolutely key in producing this building. And it’ll definitely be into the future too,” says Mr Miles.

Jason Miles, Head of Campus at Grace Lutheran College Caboolture explains that their ambitions for the building were diverse.

Now with 13 early learning centres across the Greater Brisbane region, more Brisbane families are discovering the Green Leaves difference for their child’s early years.

“I’m excited about what we can do in the future with other aspects of the master plan,” says Mr Miles. glc.qld.edu.au opens

Recognising the importance of community connections, the centres have regular visits from local paramedics, dentist, fire fighters, guide dogs, and swim schools.“These activities provide children with opportunities to extend on their interests,” says Ms Berry. The natural environment is also an integral part of their“Theprogram.children embrace Bush Kindy, where they’re able to connect with their local natural ecology environment and experience seasonal changes firsthand,” says Ms Berry. A favourite feature across all centres are their edible gardens, which thrive through the children’s interest in planting seeds, composting, harvesting, and then creating delicious meals with the help of the centre’s inhouse chefs during culinary lessons. Green Leaves offers the convenience of all-inclusive fees, which means that nappies, linen, hats, nutritious meals, as well as activities such as yoga, chef-led culinary lessons, language lessons, bush kinder, music and movement classes are all included.

16 SPRING 2022 THE SECRET BEHIND

“Back when we first started in 1938, we only ever had two levels of swimmers. There were those who knew the water would hold them up, in other words those who could float, and those who couldn’t,” says Chris.

TOO

“If you get stuck, invent a game that teaches the skill. Children love to play games in the water. That’s what makes us very different.”

“I attribute this to my dad—we have one of the very rare specialised teaching pools in the industry. The depths are critical,” says“WeChris.usethese different depths of water to gradually introduce your child to how their body reacts when those gravitational forces are reduced and/or removed.”

“Teach someone how to lie on top of the water and relax. Don’t be frightened. You won’t fall. It’s really very simple.”

“The ones who couldn’t float, we showed them how to float on top of the water and how the water always supports your body weight.”

“Wesituation.ensure that our teachers are all highly trained in this process, and then they have the freedom to interpret and teach in a way that suits them and the child.”

S tarting from just one pool in Toowoomba in 1938, Shapland Swim School today has 15 centres across south-east Queensland—Brisbane, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast—and one in Victoria. All offer the unique Shapland learn-to-swim program.

At the core of the Shapland program are five skill levels, which all revolve around gravity, or more importantly, the removal of gravity.

“If a child is stuck on something, the teacher has a lot of flexibility as to how to get past it. I always tell them, ‘If you get stuck, invent a game that teaches the skill’.

Leading the third generation of swim teachers is operations manager Chris Shapland. He says although the style of teaching might appear less structured than other swim schools, an incredible amount of development and testing has gone into refining Shapland’s learn-toswim

The Shapland family has been teaching Queensland kids to swim for more than 80 years. What is it about their unique learn to swim program that has proved so successful over the years?

Children love to play games in the water. That’s what makes us very different."

Another things that Chris believes really helps kids learn to swim is the varying depths of the pool.

Teachers need to be very flexible in how they can teach swimming, as the same principles are applicable to every standard and

THE ENVIRONMENTLEARN-TO-SWIMMATTERS

Chris says not having those restrictions means Shapland’s teachers are happier and are more satisfied with their job.

He says those who knew how to float were taught to hold water with their hands and feet, so they could start driving a forward motion.

The quality of the pool water is also an important consideration and something a parent needs to consider. When it comes to pool water, Chris Shapland believes the magna mineral water they use

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

17SPRING 2022

As a renowned swimming coach with more than 50 years’ experience teaching children how to swim, Chris believes that learning to swim without goggles on is one of the most important steps for kids. “A fundamental skill is how they react if they fall into water, and they probably won’t be wearing goggles if that happens,” Chris Shapland says. "Children will likely panic when they hit the water without goggles. Which is why swim instructors at Shapland Swim Schools encourage swimmers to practise water safety skills without goggles.”

“If a child can fall into water, float and get to the side of the pool, without goggles, they are more likely to be able to survive an accidental fall into the water,” Shapland says.Worldwide, children under five years remain the age group at highest risk of unintentional fatal drowning. Between 2002 and 2018, Queensland recorded the highest number of drowning deaths among children aged zero to four in Australia.

The most common place for drowning deaths among young children in Australia is in a swimming pool. Bathtubs ranked second most common.

• Fun! Most children love swimming lessons! what kids will learn in Shapland pools is the ultimate ‘healthy water’. “This water has been used for its healing qualities for centuries, and instead of your standard salt or chlorine pool, it’s a blend of magnesium and potassium chloride."

During swimming lessons kids will gain essential water safety skills to help prevent accidents, as well as:

• Coordination and breathing techniques.

Class size is another thing that Chris feels is critical in learning to swim, but is often overlooked. “We’ve trialled many class sizes and found a class of three is the most successful for a child to learn their aquatic skills,” Chris says. “It allows each child to receive more individual attention and accelerates their learning. Less time is wasted waiting for their turn, instead they spend more time with the teacher.”

ANOTHER CRITICAL LEARN-TOSWIM SKILL

• Skills to build upon to potentially start swimming as a sport or hobby.

• Self-confidence, as they build their skills and improve technique.

The ambience matters too. “We all know how easily children become distracted or disturbed by too much noise, so a calm environment is crucial too. Therefore we only ever have two classes in the pool at a time,” says Chris.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO FEEL THEY MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING SECONDARY INFERTILITY?

FERTILITY CAN BE A ROLLERCOASTER. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COPING EMOTIONALLY?

20 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AUSPRING 2022 HEALTH

Couples in this situation may feel guilt or shame about struggling to conceive again and it is important to acknowledge your feelings here. Taking care of yourself and each other, focusing on family life and reframing negative thoughts is also important. As a couple it may also be worth thinking about how you are going to answer

HOW LONG AFTER STARTING TRYING TO CONCEIVE DO YOU RECOMMEND COUPLES SEE A FERTILITY SPECIALIST?

uncomfortable questions from well-meaning friends and family about when or if you are going to have another baby.

It is important for the couple to find a doctor and care team who they feel supported by on their journey to conceiving their next child. At Eve Health, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to all areas of women’s health including the fertility journey for our patients. Our specialists and nurses collaborate with many other allied health and complementary practitioners to ensure a couple’s fertility journey is as stress free as possible and tailored to their individual needs. We assess the fertility and couple picture as a whole, allowing us to be able to provide the right treatments for patients. It is important that our couples know that this does not mean just IVF but all fertility treatment options outside of IVF alone.

EVEHEALTH.COM.AU

Seldom talked about but an all-too-common problem for couples looking to complete their family, we chat with fertility nurse Samantha Costa at Eve Health about secondary infertility.

Let’s talk about… SECONDARY INFERTILITY

The term ‘secondary infertility’ is not a wellknown term but refers to when a couple has previously had no problems conceiving but now struggles to conceive their next child. Whilst it may feel very isolating, it is an all too common situation for many couples.

One in six couples will have difficulty conceiving and each couple’s fertility journey is different—there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. There are many ways to treat secondary infertility, this diagnosis does not mean the end of your family dreams. For some couples, simple lifestyle changes may be all that is required. For others, the use of medications to help with ovulation or surgery, or treatment of underlying conditions may work. And some couples may need more invasive fertility treatments like IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination) or in some cases IVF to complete their families.

WHAT APPROACH DO YOU TAKE AT EVE HEALTH TO MAKE THE JOURNEY AS STRESS FREE AS POSSIBLE?

The most important factor in fertility for both men and women is age, particularly in the female partner. If the female partner is under 35 and has no known gynaecological issues, it is recommended to see a fertility specialist after 12 months of unprotected intercourse that has not resulted in a pregnancy. If the female is over the age of 35, this is shortened to six months. Couples that have known reproductive issues should consider speaking to their GP once they are ready to actively start trying for a baby as they may need early referral to a fertility specialist.

WHAT IS SECONDARY INFERTILITY?

Eve Health is a complete women’s health clinic offering excellence in all areas of women’s health—fertility, gynaecology and obstetrics. The clinic provides a holistic approach to women’s health that is as individual as its families.

to set in. Something that birthing expert Kathryn says is the last thing your body needs when birthing your baby.

Hypnobirthing is a well-established birth education program that focuses on methods of deep relaxation, positive thinking and empowerment to reduce fear and anxiety in childbirth, as well as giving you the knowledge to make the decisions when it comes to the birth of your own baby. There are never any wrong decisions in birth as long as they are your decisions says Kathryn.

Hypnobirthing is taught through a two-day course with a qualified instructor.

“I found the birth system very fear based,” says Kathryn. “It’s no surprise that so many women experience birth trauma.”

“When you are relaxed, your body readily releases more hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers and said to be 20x more effective than morphine,” says Kathryn. Kathryn will even teach you and your birth partner how to produce more of these beautiful hormones when you need them.

Have you heard of Hypnobirthing, but not sure what it is? We chat with Kathryn Wilde, birthing expert, birth support and Hypnobirthing teacher, to find out the facts behind this birthing philosophy. Y ay, you are pregnant! After the realisation has sunk in and the morning sickness has (hopefully) abated, it is time to think about how in the world this baby is coming out. A woman’s body is designed to birth naturally—it does a very good job of growing a tiny human, so it can certainly do the end bit. But there is so much fear around pushing out that precious bundle that, in the chaos of contractions and amidst all the policy procedure, it is so common for fear

WHAT IS HYPNOBIRTHING?

HOW IS HYPNOBIRTHING TAUGHT?

PREGNANCY

The ‘hypno’ refers to the self-hypnosis techniques you learn, as hypnosis is a great state of mind to be in to birth your baby. Kathryn explains that you may or may not use hypnosis in your birth; it is just one of the many tools that you learn in a hypnobirthing course. The course is not simply a box ticking exercise of things to do in your labour but rather a program to equip and empower you, no matter what path your birth may take.

WHAT HYPNOBIRTHINGIS

“Hypnobirthing mothers often describe birthing as the most wonderful and empowering experience of their lives, and that’s what I would love to give to all birthing women,” says Kathryn.

And does it really work?

“The result is just this beautiful experience of watching the couple working together to birth the baby. And then that stems into parenthood as well and how then they take on that journey together,” Kathryn says.

“The course I teach is the Positive Birth Program from Hypnobirthing Australia™, it is a comprehensive private antenatal course. I leave no stone unturned when it comes to birth. It's not only about learning tools, but how to then take them into different birthing situations. I want you to know in your heart you gave that baby the best birth possible with the circumstances you had.”

How to remain calmly in tune with your body

“I spend a whole unit just teaching the partners the power and the tools they need. The things I can teach them to do is amazing. Such as, how to encourage baby to turn, how to open the pelvis, acupressure points, how to talk to the care team and what questions to ask, is just the start. We go through all of this as hands-on training.”

“I truly believe that when the woman is making the decisions, birth is something that she's doing and she'll feel positive and empowered by that experience. Whereas when someone else is making decisions for her, then birth is something that is happening to her and that's where birth trauma stems from,” says Kathryn.

ith spring in the air and the days warming up, it’s time to get excited about the sunny days ahead.

Builds endurance: Ice skating requires energy over an extended period. And the longer you skate, the longer you push your endurance. This helps with other sports and activities too.

Being great for your health, as well as heaps of fun, Andrew Leventis from Iceworld believes that ice skating offers families the best of both worlds in the summer.

But, as much as the Queensland summer means plenty of splash-tasic fun in the water, it also means many hot sticky days spent searching for ways to keep the kids active yet out of the sun.

“As you enter the rink, you’ll escape the intense Queensland heat and instantly feel refreshed and revitalised. The music and lights will dazzle you, the skating will surprise you and most importantly you’ll be as cool as ice!” Andrew says. “Iceworld has two Olympic-sized ice rinks in Brisbane (Boondall and Acacia Ridge), each with a cool internal temperature of 10 degrees, making it a very appealing destination during those hot summer months!”Aswell as keeping kids chill, ice skating comes with many health benefits: Improved balance: Ice skating helps to improve your balance in a fun and positive way. The slippery surface quickly trains you to stay on your feet!

Improves flexibility: Through gliding and synchronised movements, your joints and muscles get a great workout, which will have you feeling more flexible in no time. Skating is said to be more beneficial than cycling and running because it works almost every major muscle.

“Unfortunately we can never claim that a child can be totally safe in and around water,” says Marina Burley, Kingswim Centre Manager and mum of two. “However, there are many things we can do to ensure a child can be COVIDsafer.”  hasseen

“As early as possible! Babies are naturally at home in the water having spent nine months in the womb surrounded by amniotic fluid. At Kingswim we run water familiarisation classes called ‘Baby Play’ for infants from three months of age. We think this is the ideal age to introduce babies to the pool—having allowed parents time to bond and adjust to life with their newborn, and for baby’s immune system to start developing.”

children missing out on swimming lessons, and some children have taken a break from swimming lessons over the winter, so now it is more important than ever to recognise the inherent dangers around water. “It only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown so every second counts,” says Marina.

When should my baby start swimming lessons?

Actively supervise children in and around water. Maintain constant visual supervision by a competent adult and be within arms-reach of any non-swimmer. Keep distractions at bay. Royal Life Saving Society Australia reports that “lack of direct adult supervision is the main factor in 70 percent of toddler drowning deaths”.

WATER SAFETY TIPS Marina’s have water-safeasummer

Never swim alone. Make sure there is always someone looking out for you. Learn CPR. Whilst we hope you never need it, knowing CPR could save a life. Enrol in swimming lessons. Learning to swim is a vital step in reducing the risk of drowning.

Learn-to-swim expert Marina Burley shares her tips on keeping kids safe arond the water. T he days are warming up, which means little kids (and big kids!) are itching to get back in the water. As fun as the pool and the ocean are, it’s critical that we are always as safe as possible.

Don’t play breath holding games. Make sure children understand competing to see who can hold their breath underwater and other similar games can be dangerous and should not be part of any water-related activities. They can be at risk of passing out under the water.

Gates and fencing. Make sure the pool gate is always shut and pool fencing is compliant. Wear a life jacket. Young children or inexperienced swimmers should wear an approved life jacket in and around water. Remember a life jacket or other floatation device is not a substitute for active adult supervision. Enter the water feet first. Severe injuries can occur from jumping or diving head first into shallow water or water where the depth is unknown. Make sure your child understands how to enter and exit the water safely.

Stay within designated swim areas. Whether you are swimming in a pool, lake or the ocean, staying within the designated areas is vital to safety. Don’t jump into the water to save someone. Call for help and reach or throw, which usually involves using a long or buoyant object to assist the person to safety without putting yourself at risk. have water-safeasummer

DON'T FORGET YOUR PRE-KID WORLD One of the big changes that doesn’t get spoken about enough, is the potential disconnect we may feel from our pre-kid village. This is such an important group to invest in as well. We know our pre-kid village loves us. We know that they have been there for us in the past. And if we take a moment, we know that they would want to be there for us now. Having children is a big transition in our life but it should not come at the expense of everything before it. We connected with our friends over many things. These things still exist. Our village people are all capable of dealing with change and are able to compensate when we are going through something new. Communication is always key. We want to keep our old trusty village, we want to continue to invest in them when we have the energy to do so. Communicate this and they will understand. We are better for our children when we as parents are feeling supported and connected, so take time to look after you. And if you haven’t found your village, give Parentline a call today.

What’s my baby village, AND WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

MOTHER’S GROUPS Mother’s Groups have been around forever, and are a great foundation for a baby village. If you are yet to give birth, ask the nurse running your pre-natal classes about groups available nearby to you. Or, if you have already had your baby, head to your local community health centre or ask the nurse at your local baby clinic

he days, weeks, months following the birth of a child are intense, to say the least. It is a time of huge change and huge emotions as you find your feet as a parent. The newborn days can also be incredibly isolating. Particularly for the new mums and dads who don’t have the benefit of local family support. Therefore, it is important to feel connected to people that understand us, celebrate with us and can also empathise with us when we aren’t doing so great. This support network is also known as your ‘village’. So, who is in your village, and how do you find one if you are feeling disconnected as a new mum?

A healthy gut of your trip for prevention. If travellers’ diarrhoea occurs or if your gut just doesn’t feel right, SB can be taken at high dose to help treat.    Digestive Enzymes: Digestive enzymes are a lifesaver when it comes to digestion. These can be taken preventatively with each meal to help support general digestion or when you feel like your digestion is just not working so great as a treatment.  Digestive Enzymes are also perfect for long haul flights when your digestion is usually disrupted due to inactivity and often highly refined, high carb and high salt meals.   There are also specific digestive enzymes supplements for dairy and gluten so if you're someone who usually needs to avoid these but wants to indulge you can without the severity of symptoms.  Peppermint Tea: Having peppermint tea on hand is great as it is an antispasmodic so it will help to relieve digestive symptoms.

GUT TRAVELLING KIT Probiotics: Being exposed to different foods and new organisms is often the cause of traveller’s diarrhoea. Research has shown Saccharomyces Bourlardii (SB) can help prevent and treat traveller’s diarrhoea.  If travelling to an area which has an increased risk for traveller’s diarrhoea its best to start taking an SB probiotic two weeks prior to leaving, then for the duration BY ALISSA MACK, NATUROPATH AT GUTAID | GUTAID.COM.AU

KEEPING HYDRATED Keep the sugary drinks (and caffeine and alcohol for us big kids) to a minimum while flying. They mess with your microbes and are dehydrating.

A s the world begins to open up again, travel is cautiously back on the to-do list. But, as fun as a holiday is, it can often mean gut problems. Everything from the long-haul flights, recycled plane air, new foods, new organisms from different climates, jet lag and more. All these things wreak havoc on our guts, which in turn affect your immunity, energy, and sleep. But the good news is, there are lots of things we can do to support our gut while travelling.

We tend to make poor choices when we are ‘hangry’ so packing lots of good snacks is a must! I fill sectioned bento boxes with many different varieties of foods. I have mainly good choices with a treat to add to the excitement of the trip. I also make sure I have some extra options in the suitcase to pull out when we get to our destination, as there’s not always food on hand.

KEEP MOVING Often after long flights or road trips and bad food our digestion can become very sluggish. Encourage them to keep their bodies moving in the airport, on the plane, when you land or make a stop, this will help with digestion.  If your kids are little, think of a few ‘active challenges’ that you can set for them there’s generally a little space somewhere!

Health experts and sisters Kristyn and Alissa from GutAid share their tips on maintaining a healthy gut next time you take a trip.

Fine motor skills, by pointing and turning pages.

hen you think of reading with your baby, you think language development, vocabulary, and lots and lots of cuddles. But did you know that these shared reading moments are also a wonderful opportunity for baby to practice and refine their essential fine motor skills?

old, your baby may begin to grab for the book and want to turn the pages. At first, they will probably grab several pages at a time, but the more they handle books the easier it becomes. Let them turn the pages, explore the book and by the age of around three years old, your toddler will likely have mastered the skill of turning just one page at a time. Try interactive books: Many books have interactive elements, such as flaps to lift, buttons to turn, textures to touch. These books are great for getting baby’s fingers moving in different ways. They are also wonderful for keeping a baby engaged and focused on the book, therefore developing their attention span. These ‘touch-and-feel’ books or those with unique textures also support sensory development. Bub will become more accustomed to feeling new textures, which can help them to feel more comfortable with other textures such as clay, sand, and play dough.
