Dive into the newly upgraded Kawana Aquatic Centre

One of the Sunshine Coast’s busiest aquatic centres is making waves with stage two of a multimillion-dollar major upgrade now complete.

With more than 200,000 visitors using the centre annually, the upgrade at Kawana Aquatic Centre is a welcome boost for the region.

A new 20-metre, five-lane enclosed pool and new changerooms were delivered in the first stage in 2024. New public amenities, a cafe, expanded picnic area and additional car parking have now been completed in stage two. This includes a Changing Places facility to provide safe, hygienic and dignified changing options for people with high support needs and their carers.

SPORTS PRECINCT

CONTINUES TO EVOLVE

The Kawana Aquatic Centre is part of the broader Kawana Sports

Precinct, which includes Sunshine Coast Stadium and Lake Kawana, which regularly host local, national and international sporting events.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the project reflected Council’s commitment to building a connected, liveable and thriving region.

“This is an investment in our future, supporting local families and athletes and also strengthening our reputation as a premier destination for sport and recreation,” Mayor Natoli said.

“Plus, the centre provides the perfect spaces for families to connect and to play.

Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain MP, said the upgrades ensure the centre can cater for people of all ages and abilities.

“This investment means even more inclusive and modern

aquatic facilities for the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

Kawana Aquatic Centre is operated by lessee, City Venue Management (CVM), providing the day-to-day site operation, programming and access for the community.

CVM Chief Executive Officer Jay Clarke said as one of the region’s most popular aquatic facilities, the centre played a vital role in promoting swim safety, health, and wellbeing.

“We’re excited to see the recent upgrades complete and to welcome even more patrons back to Kawana Aquatic Centre – now an even better experience for the Sunshine Coast community,” Mr Clarke said.

“With brand new amenities and

expanded spaces, we’re able to grow our learn-to-swim programs through Rackley Swimming, expand our squad and fitness offerings, and continue providing a welcoming hub for both locals and visitors.

“It’s a fantastic outcome for the community, and we’re proud to be part of it.”

The upgraded facilities are now open to the public.

Iron Lions Roar

Grammar Robotics Team crowned Asia Pacific Champions

After months of meticulous planning, refining, and engineering, Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s Year 12

Robotics Team has claimed international glory, taking out top honours at the FIRST Tech Challenge Asia Pacific Open Championships in Sydney.

The four-member team, aptly named the Iron Lions, competed against elite robotics teams from around the world, including those from China, Dubai, India, South Korea, the United States, and New Zealand — and emerged as overall champions. Not only did they secure the title of Winning Alliance Captain, but they also received the prestigious FIRST Inspire Award, the highest accolade presented at the event.

The Inspire Award recognises the team that best embodies the spirit of the competition — rewarding excellence not just in robot design and performance, but also in teamwork and community outreach. To earn this honour, Grammar’s Robotics Team leaned into their strengths across coding, computer-aided

design and engineering, all while displaying outstanding gracious professionalism throughout the multi-day event.

“The team demonstrated extraordinary creativity, resilience, and technical mastery. We are thrilled to watch them continue to evolve and represent Grammar with pride,” said Mr Justin Pembroke, Head of Digital Innovation at Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The journey to victory began 12 months earlier. After placing second at the National competition in November 2024, the Iron Lions set their sights on the Asia Pacific stage. Under the direction of Mr Pembroke and Mrs Brenda Gahan, Head of Extended Learning, the team enhanced their existing robot to meet the increased demands of the international arena.

The students refined key technical systems — boosting motor speeds, upgrading moving components, and reducing the robot’s weight by 5kg through the use of

composite materials. These improvements delivered a faster, more robust machine capable of tackling complex challenges with surgical precision. The team remained undefeated in the playoffs, ultimately winning 14 of the 15 matches played across the competition.

The team’s collaborative mindset, gracious professionalism and strategic gameplay were evident throughout the competition, particularly during the alliance selection process. Their decision to partner with India’s Team Kryptonite proved successful, culminating in a championship win.

“The students demonstrated maturity, self-direction and an incredible work ethic throughout the season,” said Mrs Gahan.

The school’s commitment to nurturing the team has been instrumental in their journey, providing access to mentors, local industry connections and robotics specialists, as well as allocating the resources for experimentation and refinement.

Having collaborated for over 12 months, the team capped off an extraordinary

season with international success and is already focused on next season, with a goal to compete in the World Championships in 2026.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES PROGRAM AT GRAMMAR

The Robotics Team was created through Grammar’s Emerging Technologies program — a cutting-edge technology co-curricular group designed to shape industry-ready students from Year 4 to 12.

The Emerging Technology CoCurricular Groups offer students hands-on opportunities to explore and innovate in fields such as robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, 3D modelling, and digital design. These dynamic clubs foster creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, allowing students to develop real-world skills while preparing for the future of technology. Whether building a robot, creating an app, or exploring cutting-edge tech trends, these groups inspire curiosity and empower students to become the tech leaders of tomorrow.

Student teams participate in a variety of local, national, and international competitions. And it’s not just the Iron Lions achieving success on the field. 38 primary and secondary students competed in both the FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge, with three teams advancing to National Championships.

Emerging Technologies is just one of 50 co-curricular activities offered at Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

“At Grammar, we see our extensive co-curricular programs as a real point of difference. No longer is school just about what happens within the four walls of the classroom. Co-curricular opportunities play such a pivotal role in our school and complement the great work that happens in our classrooms,” said Mark Henricks, Dean of Co-curriculum, Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

The extensive range of co-curricular activities offered by Grammar provides students with a variety of experiences that contribute to their overall development. Confidence, resilience, social skills, empathy and compassion are all developed through these programs. Importantly, students have the chance to discover and immerse themselves in activities they are passionate about, and like-minded students have the opportunity to connect and ‘find their tribe’.

Co-curriculars also allow parents to connect, with these programs becoming one of the key vehicles through which Grammar builds community in the school. “Whether it is through sport, music and creative industries, debating, chess, or emerging technologies, Grammar prides itself on its holistic approach to education," added Mr Henricks.

Mud, Sweat & Smiles

Why Moreton Bay Spartan is the ultimate family weekend this spring.

Mark your calendars for 11–12 October 2025 because Woodfordia is set to get muddy, loud and full of energy as the Spartan Moreton Bay Obstacle Event Weekend lands. Yes, there’ll be sweat, dirt and plenty of climbing, but above all, it’s a weekend designed for families to move, play and thrive together.

Spartan is known worldwide as the ultimate obstacle racing experience — think crawling under nets, splashing through creeks, scaling walls and running through open paddocks. For the adults, there are three epic challenges to choose from: the Sprint (5km, 20 obstacles), the Super (10km, 25 obstacles) or the mighty Beast (21km, 30 obstacles). Each course is challenging, no doubt, but also an incredible

But here’s the best part: Spartan isn’t just for grown-ups. The Spartan Kids Race is a highlight of the weekend, giving children aged 4 to 14 their very own muddy adventure. The course spans 1–3km and packs in 10 to 20 obstacles designed just for younger bodies — plenty of climbing, crawling and sliding, with an average finish time of about half an hour. There are open categories for ages 4 to 14, plus competitive races for ages 9 to 11 and 12 to 14.

It’s not just a race — it’s a chance for kids to discover what they’re capable of. They’ll get muddy, they’ll laugh, and they’ll surprise themselves with just how strong and determined they can be.

WHY KIDS SHOULD SPARTAN

Let’s be honest, childhood today can be a little screen-heavy. Spartan flips that on its head. It’s all about movement, teamwork and resilience. Kids learn that slipping off an obstacle isn’t failure, it’s part of the fun... and getting back up is what counts. They experience the joy of outdoor play, the thrill of physical challenge, and the boost of confidence that comes from crossing that finish line. And while they’re busy building grit and determination, they’re also having the time of their lives.

FITNESS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Whether you’re signing up for the Beast, cheering from the sidelines, or running alongside your mini Spartan, the Moreton Bay weekend is about more than just racing. It’s about connection, community and showing your kids that fitness is fun, no matter your age. Mud washes off. Memories of conquering Spartan as a family? Those stick forever. au.spartan.com/en/races/moretonbay

New $45.4 million Library+ Caloundra set to open with family celebration.

The Sunshine Coast is about to welcome a library like no other – and families are invited to be among the first through the doors when the brand-new Library+ Caloundra officially opens on Monday, September 22.

Located at 1 Omrah Avenue, the $45.4 million state-of-the-art facility has been designed as a modern hub for learning, connection and civic life. Sunshine Coast Council is marking the milestone with a community celebration from 10 am, featuring a packed program of family-friendly fun.

Children can look forward to colourful face painting, play spaces, and interactive experiences, while adults can take a first look at the striking building that brings together library services, community meeting areas, exhibition spaces and Council offices under one roof.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg said the new facility was much more than just a library.

“This new facility has been designed to bring together library services, community spaces and Council functions under one roof –creating a welcoming and flexible destination for residents of all ages,” Cr Landsberg said.

“Library+ Caloundra will offer a range of

services and spaces, from contemporary library collections and technology to large meeting rooms, event areas and Council offices – all designed to support our growing community.

“This is an incredible facility that I’m proud to welcome our community into. I look forward to seeing the spaces come to life when it opens, and for generations to come.”

A NEW KIND OF LIBRARY

Inside, families will discover a space designed to inspire curiosity, play and connection. The kids’ library features an interactive STEM wall, cosy reading cubbies, and a play area designed to spark imagination and learning. For parents, it’s a place where little ones can fall in love with books and learning from the earliest years.

Teenagers and young adults haven’t been forgotten either, with a dedicated youth area perfect for study or hanging out with friends. For adults, there’s everything from quiet lounges and digital resources to meeting rooms, AV booths, and BYO device benches.

Families can also take advantage of the outdoor covered deck for fresh air, or grab a coffee and snack from the ground-floor kiosk.

MORE THAN BOOKS

While traditional collections remain at the heart of the library – from bestselling fiction to local history archives – the new facility goes further, offering spaces for collaboration, exhibitions, community events and even Council services.

Visitors can contribute to a community jigsaw puzzle, catch the latest exhibition, or simply relax with a magazine in a sunny reading nook. With free library membership, families can start borrowing on opening day or sign up on the spot.

From hard hats to high-vis, mini-excavators to millionblock demolitions, Queensland’s one-of-a-kind Dig IT, Australia’s first mini-excavator park, has given over 200,000 kids (and plenty of parents) the thrill of operating real machinery. And they’re just getting started.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

It’s fun, it’s educational, it’s muddy, and it’s the only place in Australia where kids operate real diggers. Welcome to the best day out you didn’t know you needed: a hands-on family day that’s equal parts play, learning and pure dirt-loving joy. What’s better, Dig IT is at home at Thunderbird Park at Tamborine Mountain Glades, a place that’s legendary for family stays!

After bursting onto the scene like a wrecking ball just over two years ago, Dig IT has cemented itself as one of Australia’s most unique, hands-on attractions, and the numbers tell the story.

More than 200,000 visitors have rolled up their sleeves, donned their hard hats and high-vis gear, and taken control of real 1.7-tonne CAT mini-excavators in an outdoor construction zone that’s fast becoming the stuff of childhood legend.

From the moment they step onto site, kids transform into mini construction workers – climbing into the driver’s seat (either solo or with a parent/carer riding shotgun) and learning how to operate the machines. They dig deep, scoop and dump dirt, use a claw to lift and stack tyres, and even master the delicate skill of using a hook to catch rogue ‘crocs’ that keep things interesting.

“The kids’ reactions still blow us away, there are smiles for miles out here in every session,” said Dig IT co-founder Kate Keegan.

“There’s nothing like watching kids put on their hard hats and high viz, climb into the cab, and take control of their digger. It’s fun, educational, screen-free and totally unique. The mile-wide smiles on kids and grown-ups are proof that digging in the dirt never gets old.”

The stats are equally impressive: in just 24 months, nine Queensland-built miniexcavators have clocked more than 3 million minutes of digging, lifting, stacking and demolishing – including the toppling of nearly one million blocks in the fan-favourite Demolition Zone.

WE FEEL LIKE WILLY WONKA WHEN WE OPEN THE GATES EACH DAY, THE KIDS COME IN BEAMING AND LEAVE WITH EVEN BIGGER SMILES, EVERY DAY IS MAGIC. DIG IT CO-FOUNDER AND DAD, SAM MCCOLL.

HOW IT WORKS –A DAY AT DIG IT

From the moment you arrive, Dig IT feels like a real construction site, only way more fun. Here’s what your little diggers are in for (FYI, just the best Day Ever!):

1. Suit Up – Every child gets their own hard hat and high-vis vest. Suddenly, they’re not visitors, they’re members of the Dig IT construction crew!

2. Listen Up – Dig IT’s famous BLUE CREW (that’s the operating team) takes all little diggers through an orientation – parents love this – it covers everything you need to know while on site.

3. Climb In – Then, it’s into the cab of a real 1.7-tonne CAT miniexcavator. Kids can operate solo or share the seat with a parent/carer to guide them through the controls.

4. Choose Your Zone

Dig Zone – move mountains of dirt! Claw & Croc Zone – Stack the tyres and catch those sneaky ‘crocs’.

Demolition Zone – Everyone’s favourite – take down a wall of blocks in one mighty swipe.

The RC Zone - Use state-of-the-art remote control machines like dozers, dump trucks, excavators, and rear loaders, just like on the work site.

5 RIPPER REASONS WHY DIG IT IS THE BEST. DAY. EVER.

1. You get to drive a REAL Digger, mate! These are real, 1.7-tonne mini-excavators, built right here in Queensland. Kids (and big kids at heart) get to jump in the driver’s seat, flick the levers, dig up dirt, catch crocs, and feel like a proper tradie for the day. Hard hats on, fun mode activated!

2. There’s always something extra going on! Cupcakes? Tick. Face painters? Tick. Colouring stations? Tick. Whether it’s a birthday bash or just a regular day, Dig IT goes above and beyond with themed fun and surprises to keep the little legends grinning from ear to ear.

3. Knock things down... and no one tells you off! Demolition Zone = pure joy. Kids (and adults) get to smash, crash and destroy block towers with total permission. It’s a little chaotic, a lot of fun, and the kind of mess that doesn’t need cleaning up. What a dream!

4. It’s screen-free, dirt-soaked family time No iPads. No phones. Just good old-fashioned fun in the great outdoors, where the only thing getting recharged is your love for real play. Plus, you’re on Tamborine Mountain – fresh air and family vibes for days!

5. It’s uniquely Aussie – and 100% legendary Where else but Australia would you find a construction theme park on a mountain, surrounded by rainforest, powered by diggers, dirt, and imagination? Dig IT is one-of-a-kind, just like the legends who visit it.

CAN WE SLEEP OVER?

While you can’t sleep in the driver’s seat, you CAN stay at Thunderbird Park and Tamborine Mountain Glades, Dig IT’s home! See more at tamborinemountainglades.com.au

Radio, Rattles & Really Early Starts

MixFM breakfast radio host AB is no stranger to early starts, but motherhood has added a whole new level of chaos, cuddles and coffee. We caught up with her to talk berry blowouts, time management, and the beautiful madness of life as a radio mum.

WHO WAKES YOU UP FIRST - YOUR BABY OR YOUR ALARM CLOCK?!

Sadly, the alarm! My daughter is actually a great sleeper, so she stays in bed a few hours after I head off for work in the morning.

HOW HAS BECOMING A MUM CHANGED YOU, ON OR OFF THE MIC?

I think I still have the identity I did before, but less time for crap and saying yes to things that don’t benefit me or my family.

I’ve always empathised with mums, but it’s a whole new level now!

DESCRIBE YOUR MORNING ROUTINE IN THREE WORDS. Quick, cram and coffee.

WHAT PARENTING ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR PRE-BABY SELF?

Don’t say stuff like, “Oh enjoy life while you still can”, “you won’t be able to do this when she comes.” Life was great before, but it’s infinitely better now.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST “I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING” MOMENT AS A MUM SO FAR?

Starting solids! My gosh. Reading stuff like, “prepare for them to choke?” Absolutely not!

WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE MUM HACK FOR GETTING OUT THE DOOR AT 4 AM (OR AT ALL)?

I just bolt. She’s never woken up to me before, but I don’t want to risk making noise. So I leg it without even putting my shoes on 99% of the time.

FAVOURITE SPOT ON THE SUNNY COAST FOR A PRAM WALK AND COFFEE?

We are in Warana and we love just walking along the beach here and dropping in to B Fresh or Stoa/ Bocca.

BEST KID-FRIENDLY SONG TO BLAST IN THE CAR WHEN YOU NEED TO KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY?

The Happy Song by Imogen Heap is a gamechanger — if you know, you know. But otherwise, Dolly doesn’t mind a bit of Mix FM, thankfully (against her will).

IF YOUR DAUGHTER HAD HER OWN RADIO SHOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE CALLED?

The Berry Good Show — and she’d spend 4 hours straight playing music and smashing enough fruit off-air to send her family bankrupt (which she basically already does)

WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT THAT FIRST YEAR OF MOTHERHOOD?

I think I didn’t know what I was capable of. I used to think there weren’t enough hours in the day for my life pre-kids. Now I’ve taken time management to another level! I also didn’t realise how much I’d crave family time above all else — nothing beats it.

WHAT’S ONE THING NO ONE WARNED YOU ABOUT MOTHERHOOD THAT YOU WISH THEY HAD?

People treat mums very differently from how they treat dads. My husband is currently the stay-at-home parent and is amazing in every way, but he will get a standing ovation if he walks into a room holding her.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

Dont read or watch anything other mums are doing and let that make you feel like you’re doing any less of an amazing job than you are!

Catch Mark & AB for breakfast, weekdays 5 - 9 am on MixFM.

The Parenting Slouch

WHY YOU CAN’T STAND UP STRAIGHT ANYMORE
(And it’s not your fault)

Let’s just call it: motherhood reshapes you. Not in the poetic, tiger-stripe, glowing skin kind of way, but more in the “my upper back feels like concrete and I’m pretty sure I’ve shrunk an inch” sort of way.

It doesn’t really matter how you gave birth — caesarean, forceps, epidural, no epidural, or something that felt more like an out-of-body experience. Whatever your story, your body remembers. And let’s be honest, you probably haven’t had a chance to properly deal with any of it yet.

FIRST, LET’S REWIND

Before you’re even chasing toddlers or strapping in car capsules, your body’s already adapting. During pregnancy, your posture changes dramatically. Your ribs flare, hips clamp down, and your centre of gravity takes a holiday. You walk differently, sit differently, even breathe differently. And this whole time, your fascia — that spider web-like

tissue wrapped around everything inside you — is quietly building new movement habits. Some are useful. Most not.

Fascia is highly sensitive to both physical load and emotional stress, and it doesn't just reset when you’ve had the baby. It holds on. So if you’ve felt tense since your first ultrasound, chances are your fascia’s still hanging onto that story.

NOW FAST FORWARD: WELCOME TO THE SLOUCH

The baby’s here, and so is the baby gear. There’s feeding (breast or bottle, it’s all forward-flexion), pram pushing, awkward hip-carrying, standing half sideways while settling a meltdown in public… not to mention trying to do everything onehanded while making toast. Then there’s screen time (yes, you included), exhaustion, and the sheer volume of time spent curled forward. It’s no surprise your spine feels like it’s forgotten how to stand up straight.

This isn’t laziness — it’s repetition. Bodies adapt to what they do most. And right now, yours might be doing a lot of folding, hunching, bending, and bracing. That doesn’t mean it’s broken. It just means it’s doing exactly what it was asked to — over and over and over.

THE HIDDEN LAYER: C-SECTIONS, TRAUMA, AND CORE CONFUSION

If you had a caesarean, there’s a whole layer of tension and scarring under the surface. Scar tissue (and the fascia around it) doesn’t just “go back to normal.” It bunches, pulls, compensates. That weird tight pull across your tummy when you stretch, or that disconnect between your abs and your breath? Yep — fascia again.

And then there’s stress. Because parenting in the modern world isn’t exactly meditative. Cortisol (your stress hormone) tightens fascia even more and makes inflammation worse — which is especially annoying when you’re

trying to chop vegetables with a baby on your hip and a toddler screaming about yoghurt.

PILATES ISN’T JUST FOR INSTAGRAM

Pilates is often misunderstood. It’s not about cute outfits and influencer lighting. Real Pilates, the kind we teach, is about slow, smart movement. Breathing. Reconnecting. Unravelling all those old holding patterns and rebuilding from the deep core outwards.

We meet you exactly where you are. Postnatal. Worn out. A bit over it. Possibly unsure if your pelvic floor is still part of your anatomy. It’s all welcome.

We start simple. Breath work. Deep stabilisers. Glutes, not just abs. Little, intelligent movements that help you feel again — and over time, stand a bit taller.

YOU’RE NOT BROKEN — JUST REWIRED

Your body is brilliant. It adapts, adjusts, and protects you every day. But it needs guidance to shift out of survival mode and into restoration.

Movement won’t erase the sleepless nights or mental load, but it will help you feel more like yourself. It’ll get your breath back. It’ll loosen the grip of stress. It’ll remind you that

CAN’T GET TO CLASS? (WE SEE YOU)

Here are three fascia-friendly moves you can do at home, preferably in pyjamas, ideally before someone asks you for a snack.

1. Wall Roll Down with Breath

Releases tension through your whole back chain

Stand against the wall, feet a step forward. Inhale. Then slowly exhale and roll down, letting your arms hang. Stay there and breathe. Then roll up even slower.

Ask: Am I moving segment by segment, or stiff as a board?

2. Pelvic Clock (Lying Down)

Reconnects your core and pelvic floor Lie on your back, knees bent. Imagine your pelvis is a clock. Rock front to back (12 to 6) then side to side (3 to 9).

Ask: Am I moving with ease or holding tension? Where do you feel stuck?

3. Cat-Cow with Breath Pauses

Mobilises your spine and reconnects ribs to breath

On hands and knees, inhale to arch, exhale to round. But pause after each phase and actually feel.

Ask: Is this coming from my ribs? Am I just going through the motions?

you live in this body, not just use it to get through the day.

You don’t need a six-pack or a fancy Reformer routine to get started. You just need to move. With awareness. With

compassion. And with the knowledge that you’ve already done the hardest bit — growing a human.

Now it’s time to grow you again. And we’re right here when you’re ready.

The Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy for Babies and Children

Every child deserves to feel safe, calm, and comfortable in their own body. However, the journey into the world isn’t always easy. Birth can be physically demanding, and little bodies can hold onto tension that shows up as unsettled behaviour, feeding difficulties, or disturbed sleep.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on method aimed at helping babies and children release tensions and restore balance to their nervous system. Using the lightest touch, the therapist listens to the body’s rhythms and supports natural self-healing. It can be done from birth.

“Parents often notice positive changes such as improved feeding, better digestion, longer sleep, and calmer moods,” says Amanda Fincham, Craniosacral Therapist on the Sunshine Coast.

Local mum, Angela, did a series of craniosacral sessions with her 3-month-

old son. “He had reflux and was constantly unsettled after a traumatic emergency C-section," said Angela. “The sessions were lifechanging for us in those early days. He would sleep more soundly and feed better; it really eased his fussiness.”

For children, craniosacral therapy can also support healthy development, reduce the effects of stress, and assist with issues such as anxiety, headaches, or trouble concentrating. “Because it works with the body’s natural systems, it is non-invasive, safe, and deeply calming,” adds Amanda.

Whether you’re navigating the early days with a newborn or supporting an older child’s wellbeing, craniosacral therapy provides a caring, effective way to build resilience and comfort — helping little ones thrive from the inside out.

TEN

REASONS PARENTS SEEK CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY FOR THEIR BABIES:

1. Colic and reflux: CST can soothe digestive discomfort and help reduce excessive crying associated with colic.

2. Feeding difficulties: Therapeutic hands-on treatment can help alleviate tension in the jaw and neck, potentially improving feeding issues.

3. Sleep disturbances: Many parents report improvements in sleep patterns, as CST promotes relaxation and eases tension in the nervous system.

4. Torticollis: CST can help release tension in the neck muscles, correcting abnormal head posture associated with torticollis.

5. Birth trauma: Infants often experience stress during delivery. CST can help address restrictions in the craniosacral system, which is then translated to the rest of the body’s tissues.

6. Fussiness and irritability: CST can promote overall relaxation and may help babies who are consistently fussy or irritable.

7. Bodywork for pre- and posttongue, lip and cheek tie procedures: Bodywork is highly recommended to ensure this procedure is as successful as possible.

8. Ear infections: CST may assist in reducing fluid buildup and tension in the ear area, often decreasing the frequency of ear infections.

9. Developmental delays: When there is tension in the membranes of the skull, the brain can struggle to develop. By releasing this tension, neurodevelopmental processes can progress, therefore allowing developmental milestones to be reached.

10. Sensitivity to touch: CST can help regulate the nervous system, benefiting babies who are sensitive to sensory input.

How Ballet Sparks Creative Thinking

Why those tiny twirls and fairy wings are building more than just dance skills.

When you think of ballet for toddlers, your mind might immediately go to pink tutus, tiny pliés, and adorable performances. But behind the sweetness of a preschool dance class lies something far more powerful: the spark of creative thinking.

At its heart, ballet for young children is a form of imaginative play. Each class becomes a space where stories are danced, characters are embodied, and the lines between movement and make-believe are delightfully blurred.

“Creative thinking starts with exploration,” says Miranda Smith, founder and artistic director at Dance Empire Sunshine Coast. “In our Kinderballet© classes, we don’t just teach steps, we create a world. One week we’re butterflies flying through the garden, the next we’re brave

explorers crossing an icy lake. The children aren’t just learning movement; they’re learning to think beyond the obvious.”

This blend of movement and storytelling boosts more than creativity, it supports problem-solving, emotional expression and flexible thinking. When children are asked to interpret a story through dance, they’re encouraged to make choices, try new ideas, and respond to others, all while staying in motion.

“Sometimes we set a challenge, like ‘Can you show me how a dragon would tiptoe?’ or ‘What does a sad flower look like when it dances?’ These simple prompts encourage children to think laterally, connect feelings to movement, and make their own creative decisions,” Miranda explains.

In a world increasingly focused on academic outcomes, fostering divergent thinking is

more important than ever. Creative children tend to be better at adapting to change, generating ideas and working collaboratively. And ballet — especially when taught in a play-based environment — can help lay that foundation early.

“It’s not about perfect technique at this age,” Miranda says. “It’s about building confidence to express, create and imagine. When a child realises they can bring a story to life with their own body, it’s incredibly empowering.”

So while your tiny dancer might be fluttering around the studio pretending to be a fairy or stomping like a dinosaur, they’re also strengthening their ability to think creatively and adaptively. And that’s a skill they’ll carry with them for life.

A Kinder Path Through Separation with Family Focus Mediation

“It’s about more than just resolving issues — it’s about offering hope and a way forward.”

Separation and divorce can stir up emotions, disrupt routines, and leave families feeling uncertain. But amidst the upheaval, there is a better way forward— one that puts people, not conflict, at the heart of the process.

Tense conversations about the kids’ schedules, uncertainty about how to manage the mortgage, or simply not knowing where to start, it can all feel like an impossible load to carry. The legal system, while necessary, can be overwhelming, impersonal, and costly — especially when your priority is protecting your children’s wellbeing and financial security.

That’s why Amanda and Eva-Britt founded Family Focus Mediation. With backgrounds in family law and mediation, both had seen the emotional toll separation can take. “The legal system has its place, but it’s not always the best environment for families,” Amanda says. “We wanted to create a space where people feel heard, respected, and supported through the process.”

That vision became the foundation of Family Focus Mediation: a service built on empathy, fairness, and child-focused solutions. “It’s about more than just resolving issues — it’s about offering hope and a way forward,” Amanda explains.

Today, their accredited Family Dispute Resolution practitioners help separating couples navigate parenting arrangements, property division, and financial matters with professionalism, compassion, and clarity.

“Whether face-to-face or online, the goal is the same: to help families reach workable, legally enforceable agreements that put children’s needs first,” Eva-Britt says.

To take the first step, call Family Focus Mediation on 1300 280 512 for a free 15-minute discussion and start building a better future.

SMALL BUSINESS

Smooth Move

Why a pina colada-scented shaving cream is making waves in bathrooms around Australia.

Blessd founder, Sunshine Coast mum of two and part-time radio host on 91.1 HotFM, Jade Harrison, was “shocked” when her new range of women’s shaving cream almost sold out within days of launching.

The brand released its first women’s shaving cream and luxury razors in July, sparking an unexpected buying frenzy from customers around the country.

“The response was overwhelming,” Jade says. “I made Blessd shaving cream for queens because I was so sick of using my husband’s shaving cream and smelling like a man

afterwards. I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find one made for women.”

She points out that while there are hundreds of men’s shaving creams on the market in Australia, women’s options remain few and far between — even though women often shave more body parts, more often.

“Until now, we’ve been making do with whatever’s in the shower — rusty disposable razors, old bars of soap, sticky gels, conditioner, or the boyfriend’s shaving cream,” she says. “It’s like women’s shaving is stuck in the nineties.”

Blessd’s offering is designed to be as practical as it is indulgent, with a tropical scent that’s

been winning fans of all ages. “We’ve had mums come back to buy more because their daughters keep pinching it,” Jade laughs.

What started as a side-hustle is quickly blossoming into a booming business, but Jade won’t be hanging up the radio mic any time soon.

“Every busy mum should have something that makes life a little easier. For me, this was about making a daily task quick and simple — and if it smells like pina coladas, even better.”

WWE’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT GIVING CHILDREN THE CONFIDENCE TO ENJOY THE WATER SAFELY

Building Water Confidence Before Summer Hits

development. “Our teachers are highly qualified and genuinely care about building confidence and water safety,” Nathan explains. “It’s about technique, fitness and fun — we want kids to love coming to lessons.”

ith spring finally here and summer fast approaching, families across the Sunshine Coast are looking forward to long days at the beach and pool. But before the fun begins, one question is at the front of parents ‘ minds: are my kids water safe? Living in a coastal community, knowing how to swim isn’t just a rite of passage — it’s a life-saving skill.

That’s where Mountain Creek’s familyfocused swim school, Alite Edvantage, comes in. Renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and top-quality programs, the school is committed to teaching children of all ages and abilities to swim with confidence.

“We’re passionate about giving children the confidence to enjoy the water safely,” says Nathan, owner of Alite Edvantage Swim School. “Whether they’re just three months old or

preparing for competitive squads, we have a pathway for every swimmer.”

The journey often begins in the school’s free baby classes, available for little ones aged three to six months. These sessions focus on water familiarisation, helping infants feel calm and happy in the water. From there, children can progress through structured programs that build solid foundations – from basic floating and breathing techniques to mastering all four strokes. For those chasing bigger goals, the pathway leads right through to squad and competition swimming.

SMALL CLASS SIZES MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Small class sizes are central to the Alite Edvantage philosophy. This guarantees personalised attention and quicker skill

Families juggling busy schedules will also appreciate the flexible timetable, with early morning and Saturday classes available. For those looking to boost progress, the school offers popular Intensive Programs during the holidays. These concentrated lessons are ideal for preparing for Nippers, catching up on missed skills, or simply giving children an extra confidence boost before summer.

The focus is always on more than just swimming. It’s about building resilience, fitness, and confidence — skills that stay with children long after they leave the pool. At Alite Edvantage, every swimmer is welcomed into a safe, supportive environment where progress is celebrated, and children feel motivated to improve.

As the weather warms up and the lure of the ocean grows, there’s no better time to make water safety a priority. Because on the Sunshine Coast, learning to swim isn’t optional — it’s essential.

From Fridge Door to Forever

Meet the Gold Coast

sisters transforming children’s drawings into keepsakes that celebrate creativity and preserve childhood magic.

In an era where screens often dominate children’s attention, two Gold Coast sisters are on a mission to put pencils, paintbrushes, and pure imagination back in the spotlight.

Anja and Stella Lewis, founders of NxtGenTheory, have created a unique way for families to preserve and celebrate their children’s artistic milestones. From Christmas cards and wrapping paper to personalised stickers, NxtGenTheory transforms kids’ original drawings into highquality keepsakes - ensuring those precious masterpieces last well beyond the fridge door.

With over seven years’ experience in early childhood education, Anja understands how vital creativity is for a child’s development.

“I’ve seen firsthand how creativity fuels confidence, problem-solving skills, and emotional connection in children,” she says. “We wanted to create something that keeps childhood magic alive—something tangible, lasting, and filled with love.”

The process is refreshingly simple for busy families. Parents send in a child’s artwork, and the team at NxtGenTheory transforms it into Australian-made, eco-friendly products that can be enjoyed for years to come. Adding to the feel-good factor, 10 per cent of every sale is donated to a nominated school,

“A drawing is more than just lines on paper. It’s a snapshot of a child’s mind at that moment in time,” Anja explains. “We’ve watched children light up when they see their art turned into something the whole family can enjoy. It’s about valuing their creativity and making them feel proud.”

The sisters see their business as more than just a creative service. It’s also their way of responding to what they describe as the “screen-time epidemic.” They fondly recall their own childhood, filled with cubby houses built from couch cushions, spontaneous dress-ups with their dad, and games of hopscotch in the street.

“We want today’s kids to have those same hands-on experiences,” Anja says. “Turning their art into something special is one way to remind them, and their families, just how important that creative play is.”

NxtGenTheory’s products are available to families across Australia, with simple online ordering and delivery. The sisters also work with schools and childcare centres to encourage creativity in children and to strengthen bonds between families and communities. “We love working alongside educators to not only encourage imagination but also give back in ways that make a lasting difference,” says Anja.

For parents looking to celebrate their child’s artistic journey while supporting a cause, NxtGenTheory offers a thoughtful, personal, and lasting alternative to massproduced mementos, one that turns every doodle into a treasure.

AND HOW TO PLAN THEM WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND

Planning a family holiday is supposed to be exciting. But between school drop-offs, work meetings and sports practice, who has the time to scroll through 500 different hotel options or work out the best route through Japan with a stroller?

That’s where someone like Amy Gratton comes in. A family travel specialist at Sonia Jones Travel, Amy spends her days doing what most of us put in the too-hard basket: making holidays with kids easy.

“With the internet, there’s just too much information,” Amy says. “You look up Fiji and you’re hit with 10,000 options. We simplify all that. We tailor your holiday based on what your family actually wants and needs.”

Amy’s not just talking the talk. With two kids of her own (aged 10 and 12), and more than 20 years in the travel industry, she’s been everywhere from the Maldives to Mildura — and knows exactly how to build a trip that keeps everyone from toddlers to teens happy.

WHY BOOK WITH A TRAVEL AGENT?

There’s a growing trend of time-poor parents ditching DIY planning and going back to human experts — especially when those experts know how to handle everything from multi-generational trips to toddler meltdowns on layovers.

“It’s so time-consuming trying to plan it yourself — and that’s if everything goes right,”

Amy says. “We’re there to help when things go wrong, too, like flight cancellations or missed connections. We’ve got the inside knowledge to fix things fast.”

Plus, every Sonia Jones Travel booking comes with a custom travel app, meaning no more folders full of printed itineraries. “The app shows your day-by-day plans, live flight updates, and even if your gate has changed at the airport. It’s all electronic and all in one place,” Amy says. “And if something does go wrong, you just message us on WhatsApp — no waiting on hold with an airline chatbot.”

The agency is also committed to sustainable travel, and the paperless process is just one small part of that ethos. It’s a streamlined, personal, and planet-friendly approach that brings real peace of mind — especially for busy parents.

WHERE TO GO: AMY’S TOP FAMILY PICKS RIGHT NOW

So, where does a family travel pro recommend booking right now? According to Amy, three destinations are topping the list: Japan, Fiji, and the unexpected rising star — Sri Lanka.

1. JAPAN

“Japan is still really hot for us,” Amy says. “It’s family-oriented, super safe, and the public transport is phenomenal — everything runs on time, colour-coded, and really clean.”

Families can enjoy everything from Tokyo’s anime scene to skiing in Hokkaido. Universal Studios, tech museums, and culture-rich neighbourhoods mean every age group is entertained. Plus, the direct flight from Brisbane to Tokyo makes it even more appealing.

2. FIJI

Just a short flight from Australia, Fiji is a no-brainer for families. “It has something for everyone,” Amy says. “You can go resort-style on the Coral Coast with ATVs and village visits, or head to an outer island where you take your shoes off and don’t see them for a week.”

Fiji’s warmth isn’t just in the weather.

“Fijians are the most welcoming people,” she says. “The nannies are incredible, and the kids’ clubs aren’t just colouring-in — they’re out planting coral, weaving baskets, and snorkelling. Your kids are having the time of their lives, and you get to have a glass of champagne on a sun lounger.”

It’s also ideal for multi-generational trips, with plenty to keep everyone — from toddlers to grandparents — engaged and comfortable.

3. SRI LANKA

Amy predicts this destination is about to boom. “Sri Lanka is going to be the next hot place,” she says. “It’s perfect for people who’ve already done Thailand or Malaysia and want

something a bit different.”

She speaks from personal experience. “We did everything — temples, elephant safaris, leopard spotting, cooking classes in tiny villages. My kids didn’t touch their devices the whole time because there was always something to do.”

Sri Lanka also offers flexibility — from fast seven-day tours to relaxed beach weeks on the south coast. “It’s culturally rich, the food is amazing, and it’s really easy to get around,” Amy adds.

SMART TRAVEL TIPS FROM A PRO MUM

With two well-travelled kids of her own, Amy knows what it takes to survive — and even enjoy — long-haul family travel. Her go-to tips?

• Snacks. “ Lots of snacks. Most kids don’t like in-flight meals.”

• Decent headphones. “Forget the scratchy airline ones. Get proper, comfortable ones that actually fit kids’ heads.”

• A pack of cards. “Even screen-loving kids get bored of their devices eventually. Cards work for every age.”

• Spare clothes. “You never know when you’ll get delayed.”

• Involve the kids. “I always ask my kids for two or three things they’d love to do. If they help plan it, they get more excited about the trip.”

Whether it’s finding a cricket stadium in Sri Lanka for a sport-mad teen or balancing temples with surf beaches, Amy believes the best holidays happen when everyone gets a say.

Social Media Ban Looms

TIME TO RESET AND RECONNECT

From December, new restrictions will change the way kids use social media in Australia. And while the idea of less screen time might feel daunting (for kids and parents alike), experts say it’s also the perfect chance to hit reset and rediscover real-life connections at home.

Parenting specialists from the Triple P –Positive Parenting Program admit there’s no magic formula for getting it right. Even adults struggle with switching off. But as Carol Markie-Dadds, Triple P International Country Director, explains, what matters most is finding the “power-down” strategy that works for your family.

“We are parenting in a digital age, so parents and carers can view this current challenge as a teachable moment to support kids to develop healthy, lifelong digital habits,” she says.

It’s no surprise that many families are feeling the pressure. Triple P’s National Parenting Pulse Survey found 85% of parents

argue with their children about social media use, and almost eight in ten worry about its impact on their child’s mental health.

But here’s the surprising news: kids want more face-to-face time, too. A national survey by Act for Kids found two in five children aged 10 to 16 actually prefer hanging out with family in person, compared to just 15% who favour digital

interaction. Three-quarters said they feel most connected when simply talking about their day IRL — even though almost half spend more than an hour chatting online.

That’s why Act for Kids has launched the Let’s Connect IRL (In Real Life) campaign, codesigned with children themselves, to remind parents that it’s the little moments that count. Whether it’s chatting in the car, sitting nearby while they’re online, or making device-free time part of the family routine, being present matters more than we think.

As Markie-Dadds points out, creating a safe, judgment-free home where kids feel comfortable sharing their worries not only helps with this digital transition but also strengthens relationships for the teenage years ahead.

Families looking for extra guidance can access free, 24/7 support at triplep-parenting. net.au, and find updates on the new legislation at esafety.gov.au.

Quick tips for connecting IRL

• START SMALL: Swap 10 minutes of scrolling for a walk, snack break or chat together.

• BE PRESENT: Sit nearby while your child is online — most kids say it helps them feel supported.

• MAKE IT ROUTINE: Try a daily device-free meal or bedtime catch-up.

• JOIN IN: Ask about their online world, then share yours. Kids value when adults show genuine interest.

Quick & easy CHICKEN & ZUCCHINI PATTIES

Looking for a healthy dinner the whole family will enjoy? These quick and easy chicken and zucchini patties are a weeknight winner. Packed with protein and sneaky veggies, they’re simple to prep and ready to serve in just 30 minutes— perfect for busy nights when you want something nutritious and kid-approved.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 medium zucchini, grated

• 2 tsp salt, divided

• 500g chicken mince (you can also use turkey mince)

• 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

• 1/4 cup green onions or chives, finely sliced

• 1 large egg

• 2 cloves garlic, pressed

• 225g ricotta cheese

METHOD

1. Place zucchini in a colander or bowl. Sprinkle grated zucchini with 1 tsp of salt and let stand for 10 minutes. Then, squeeze out as much juice as possible from the zucchini, squeezing it out by the fistful to extract as much juice as you can. (You'll be amazed how much juice actually comes out of the zucchini.) Transfer the drained zucchini to a large bowl. Discard drained juice.

2. Add chicken, salt, pepper, green onions or chives, egg, garlic and ricotta cheese and mix together.

3. Heat a large non-stick frying pan or skillet over medium heat and add 3-4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Take a heaped tablespoon of the mixture and shape it into a round patty about 0.5cm thick. Cook uncovered over medium heat for 3 minutes, then flip, cover, and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until cooked through.

4. Add more oil to the pan as needed for subsequent batches.
