EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO BE HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SAFE, FREE FROM HARM AND INJURY

Regardless of what’s happening in the world, people will always need hope. Once upon a time - always put hope at the forefront of the story, showing that there is always a way for things to improve and for the world to change for the better. – MATTHEW RUDOY

O N C E UPON A TIME Once upon a time there was a little girl who from a young age wanted not only to be a teacher but build her own school. A school that would make a real difference, built on three main principles – trust, loyalty and kindness. She became a teacher and on her first teaching placement met a young child whose hands were covered in cigarette burns. It was then that the dream of building a school did not seem enough; it would take a community of like-minded people to make a real difference. In 1993, the little girl turned teacher, created a not-for-profit charity that evolved into the K.I.D.S (Kids In Dangerous Situations) Foundation. The past two years have been like a ‘once upon a time’ story book - once upon a time KIDS coordinated recovery camps; once upon a time SeeMore (KIDS mascot) shared safety messages in early childhood education centres; once upon a time we visited aged-care centres with 4-year-olds; and once upon a time we hugged the people we loved. That little, now big girl, dreams that 2022 will return all the ‘once upon a times’ that we have missed.

The story of KIDS and many of the special people that share a place in our community, are told in “When bad things happen... good things can grow”. The philosophy of our Foundation on raising happy, healthy, and safe children is shared in “Let Kids Be Kids”. Visit: susieoneill.com.au to purchase your copy.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. – JOHN LENNON

C E O + C HAIR ME SSAG E The actions taken around the world to combat the Coronavirus have overwhelmingly challenged us and changed our lives profoundly. We responded to these challenges with innovation and creating opportunity to continue to be the best support service for our little people, families, and educators. We were there for those who had lost their sense of happiness as a result of the lockdowns and restrictions put in place to contend with the pandemic. Guiding them to find joy in small, everyday moments and being grateful for them. Tiny things like, a cuddle from someone you love, feeling the warmth of the sun, relaxing in a bathtub, unexpected acts of kindness, or walking to the cafe to simply buy a coffee. It is said that happiness can be felt, but really it is defined by the things you do and being in the moment when you do them. Focusing on happiness was a tool we used to tackle a second year filled with challenges. Despite the uncertainty of what each week would bring, we remained strong. Our Injury Prevention and Recovery Programs continued, albeit delivered in different ways. 10,000 Early Childhood Education Centres received KIDS Foundation’s SeeMore Safety education program packs and 465,000 children’s storybooks were printed and distributed to children Australia-wide. Our preschool and elderly friends stayed connected and injury survivors received over 1,100 hours of support.

Our collaboration with the education and health sectors, like-minded organisations, and partners across Australia continued to ensure children received the best chance of a healthy and safe life through education, innovation, research and advocacy programs. As a team, we are excited to be a year into our three-year strategy that will ensure we continue to evolve and inspire innovation to be a leader in injury prevention and recovery in Australia. Loving thanks and sincere gratitude to our devoted KIDS Team, in particular the staff and Board Directors who realise the value of our work and continue to support and further our commitment to reducing childhood harm and injury. Extra special thanks to our volunteers, patron, ambassadors, sponsors and donors who share in the endeavours, ideas and desires to make a difference to the lives of little people and their families who we support.

My survivor story began when I was 12 months old, my birth mum held me in a bath of boiling water. My injuries were so severe I died a few times on my way to hospital in the fixed wing aircraft, and was brought back to life. Once I arrived at the hospital and my injuries were assessed, I needed some of my toes and fingers amputated, as they were so badly burnt. To this day I’ve had 100+ operations from skin grafts to skin releases. Living as a burns survivor hasn’t been easy. There’s been bullying, judgement and the stares just to name a few. The thing that makes me annoyed most is when people just see me as a burns victim. I don’t want them to feel bad for me, I am on this earth for a reason and live my life to the fullest. Without sounding corny, if I didn’t sustain these injuries I wouldn’t have been able to be a mentor and been able to find the KIDS Foundation.

something we wanted to achieve, and she would try and help us make it happen. I believe everyone had their wish granted but I was waiting until my partner of 5 years, Bec, and I moved and got our own place. My wish was for a miniature dachshund and on January 30, I got my wish, we picked up our puppy, Ollie. The KIDS Foundation, through the Carol Mayer Trust, bought Ollie for us. He is so, so cute and we love him so much, he’s so cheeky and gives the best puppy kisses and cuddles.

The Foundation to me is more of a family than a foundation, we all know what the other members have been through and are one strong united family. One evening at a camp we all designed a vision board and Susie asked us to write down something we wished for or

OUR PROGRAMS INJURY PREVENTION Our prevention programs educate and empower children to build a strong sense of identity and wellbeing so that they can keep themselves and others safe while still allowing them to be kids. Educating children through the SeeMore Safety Program in Australia’s early childhood education centres is our focus.

INJURY RECOVERY Our recovery programs support children with horrific injuries and trauma caused by burns, accidents, dog attacks, crime, neglect, abuse, and environmental events. We recognise the positive impact of peer support promoted through the delivery of Injury and Trauma Recovery camps, leadership workshops and the National Burn Survivors’ Network for families.

ADVOCACY WORK Our advocacy work gives children a voice and agency in their own learning. We empower them to build self-worth, wellbeing, respectful relationships, values, and behaviours that allow them to become responsible risk takers and contributors to society.

Every day the team at the KIDS Foundation devotes time and resources to educating and empowering children and their families on ways to prevent injuries and trauma associated with events that put children in dangerous situations. That is how KIDS gets its acronym - ‘Kids In Dangerous Situations’. 15

6 Trauma and Injury Recovery Camps were planned, one took place in Port Macquarie and due to COVID-19 travel restrictions the remaining 5 camps have been deferred to 2022.

1,100 Individualised Support Hours

were provided to trauma injury survivors and volunteers troubled during the year. One-on-one programs that normally are carried out in person and at camps were conducted via phone and video conference/meetings. Talk About Tuesday sessions were held to connect survivors from all around Australia with each other to encourage peer support.

39 Early Childhood Education and Aged Care Centres received the Connecting Generations – Adopt a GrandBuddy Program. 31 were withheld due to COVID-19 restrictions and we look forward to re-engaging them in 2022.

10,000 Early Childhood Education Centres received SeeMore Safety Program packs and

engaged more often with our Virtual Classroom. A SeeMore Safety show was produced as another means of reaching the little people that consider SeeMore Safety as their trusted friend. SeeMore Bug Safety – the tiny germs we can’t see books and supporting resources helped to reduce the anxiety around the pandemic and educate children on good hygiene practices. The books were translated into four languages – Swahili, Arabic, Simplified Chinese and Vietnamese to support non-English speaking families.

465,000 Safety Activity and Story Books were printed and distributed to children throughout Australia.

W HAT THE Y SAY OUR PATRON

HON. SCOTT MORRISON PM I honour the work of the KIDS Foundation, that you do every day, in supporting children to make positive and safe choices for their lives and be there to help them get their lives back on track when they fall. Thank you for the work your organisation did to ensure preschool children and their aged care friends stayed connected through the pandemic.

OUR AMBASSADORS

DR RICHARD HARRIS OAM I am sure the youth I have met through the KIDS Foundation have done more for me than I can do for them. I can only say I am honoured to be part of the Foundation working alongside some amazing people, and some even more inspirational youngsters.

CHRIS SCOTT After seeing a story on TV about the KIDS Foundation, I contacted Susie to learn more about the foundation. While I hope it’s helped them a bit, it has made me a much more compassionate and empathetic person. Susie and the KIDS Foundation gave me much more than I could give them.

DENISE DRYSDALE The children, Susie, and her team support are amazing. Their stories break your heart and bring you to tears. We have had lots of fun together, and I love working with the KIDS Foundation.

CRAIG ALEXANDER I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand on many occasions the huge impact the KIDS Foundation makes. I have attended camps, met the courageous children, survivors and the families involved with the Foundation and played a small part in raising funds at much needed times. The KIDS Foundation is an incredible organisation whose impact on thousands of children and their families is immeasurable. OUR VOLUNTEERS

ANNIE LOUEY It’s taken over a decade but I can finally say I don’t regret being burnt. I can’t possibly regret all of my successes and achievements but I certainly don’t regret finding my purpose – to have fun and make people feel good through the KIDS Foundation.

ANNIE AND BRAD FOSTER We found a passion for a charity that has changed our lives.

OUR SPONSORS

GRAHAM BATTEN – Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation (NPCF) has had a relationship with the KIDS Foundation since 2009. For more than a decade this partnership has worked to improve the lives of children and families in regional NSW. Together we have helped build healthy, safe and resilient regional communities which will have meaningful impact for generations to come.

TIM DIAMOND – Cotton On Foundation I had the opportunity to experience a camp in Anglesea. Meeting incredible kids, their families and seeing them engage with others in the same situation was simply wonderful. It’s an experience that absolutely stays with you. The many Cotton On volunteers came away with the same feeling and memories, where we, as a corporate partner, felt we received so much more than what we gave. That was a sign of a genuine, mutually beneficial partnership.

MARY GRANT – Consolidated Property Services Since 2012, Consolidated has supported the KIDS Foundation, especially at camps. We are so proud of our staff who have become volunteers for the Foundation. They often share moving accounts of their life-changing experiences. The importance of sharing, recognising and helping our people to grow is firmly entrenched in the Consolidated culture, so we are honoured to partner with the KIDS Foundation.

OUR DONORS

ANTHONY ABBEY - Harris Trade Plumbing Supplies It was an experience I had as a four-year-old meeting a young boy with burns after falling into the bath. The image of his face that looked like it had melted was indelibly stamped into my brain from that young age, and I believe has always been why I have shown an interest in supporting KIDS.

W H ERE W E ARE TODAY It was a team effort when KIDS answered requests from kindergarten and preschool educators across Australia to produce free bug-safety resources for children to help them understand the Coronavirus and ways to keep themselves and others germ-free. KIDS set up an incredible task force to deliver SeeMore Bug Safety storybooks to 10,000 early childhood education centres around Australia. Thanks to a generous donor, KIDS rallied additional in-kind support and donations from local Ballarat printer, Revolution Print, delivery company Drive Yello, Kookaburra Educational Resources and Exodas Transport to put additional books in the hands of children in lock-down areas within weeks. Another 26,000 copies were sent to 650 preschools in and around Newcastle, NSW, thanks to a grant from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. We were proud of our achievement and thrilled to receive a letter from the Victorian Deputy Premier commending us for our work.

Throughout the year, the global pandemic saw our flexibility and adaptability skills put to good use as KIDS planned for the Connecting Generations: Adopt a Grandbuddy Program rollout in Hamilton. Our program guide was reviewed to incorporate remote adaptations, and services supported to access remote tools such as the Virtual Classroom. Despite the postponement of Injury Recovery events in line with changing COVID-19 travel restrictions, KIDS hosted a modified Camp TANGO in Port Macquarie (NSW) in May, 2021. The short trip was jam-packed and included some fun local activities and much needed reconnection for participants. Attendees re-visited the Koala Hospital, took part in an escape room challenge at Facade Escape Room, sped through the waves on a jet boat ride with Port Jet and caught up with local KIDS supporters and past volunteers for dinner at Chop ‘n’ Chill. We were also able to host a dinner event with many survivors, volunteers and friends of KIDS from the Newcastle area during the trip to NSW. Those who attended were happy to see, connect and reconnect with others who they had not seen in some time. The smiles and that feeling of being a part of the ‘KIDS Family’ was felt by all. Although our face-to-face support was limited, we continued to catch-up virtually on a regular basis with staff, volunteers and survivors through our Talk About Tuesday chats. These were a great opportunity to check-in and for many were a highlight of their week. We spent many hours – more than 1100+ providing individualised support to those within our Burn Survivors’ Network (BSN) which kept us connected during such challenging times.

26

In March, 2021 we joined the 1st / 14th Brighton Sea Scouts who hosted their annual family sailing day at Karkarook Park in Melbourne. A small number of BSN members, their families, along with KIDS volunteers and staff attended the day and enjoyed venturing out on kayaks, small sailboats and paddleboards. Attendees also had loads of fun, sliding down a slip and slide. We are also happy to have made some great connections with hospitals around the country and look forward to working with them in the future to help support individuals who have experienced life-changing injury and trauma. Like for many charities, our planned fundraising events for this year were unable to go ahead. However we found an opportunity to be involved in something a little different Charity TV Global Adventure All Stars. KIDS is participating in a filming and fundraising project produced by registered Australian Charities & Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) entity, Charity TV Global. Our team of eight amazing individuals have all smashed their fundraising targets and as a reward, will go on a life-changing 6-day adventure of a lifetime!

For two years, KIDS’ involvement in the Noosa Tri as a charity partner has been impacted because of the pandemic. In place of this annual fundraiser, some super friends of KIDS made a difference of their own and we thank them dearly. Thanks to the team at Hot Temple Ballarat who helped KIDS deliver its inaugural virtual-tri and thanks to Janet Miller and her nephew Chris who completed a solo tri to coincide with our virtual event and our mate Christian Schwaerzler who completed a Solo 70.3 Tri for KIDS. Beau, one of our fabulous KIDS educators, made a massive difference this year to KIDS. He signed up for, and was ready to take on, his first ever full IRONMAN distance event in Port Macquarie, when it was postponed due to devastating floods after already being moved because of COVID. Beau didn’t give up his dream, continued training and smashed a fundraising goal he had set for KIDS. What a champ! Thanks to Beau, and other generous donors throughout the year, more young injury survivors will be able to attend KIDS camps.

Survivors Matt Thiele, Tianna King, Jai Pearce and Karen Jacques will join our very own Susie O’Neill along with volunteers Leanne McPherson, Michelle Harris and Alyce McMillan as KIDS All Stars. A number of incredible events were delivered as part of this fundraising initiative including an exclusive dinner at Sho Sho in South Australia, a charity raffle and private dinner with survivor and friend Matt Golinski, high tea at Cafe Bear and Scoobs in Geelong and more.

BROTHERLY LOVE: Fire survivors Fletcher and Spencer Connelly in between work, school and sport. Picture: SIMON STURZAKER

GETTING ON WITH LIFE Devonport brothers Fletcher and Spencer Connelly are enjoying life and making their mum extremely proud eight years after they survived horrific burns in a car fire. Fletcher is in Year 11 and recently started working at a supermarket while his outgoing younger brother Spencer is the joker who loves to stir the pot and is always out with friends when he’s not playing soccer. A PILOT who safely landed her plane without injuring herself or her passenger has praised the safety of modern aviation and vowed to fly again soon. Lesleigh Griffin had a "beautiful" joy flight down the West Coast for lunch at Strahan on Tuesday. Unfortunately, something caused the nosewheel of the Pioneer Hawk 300 to snap off before touchdown, and Ms Griffin had to perform an emergency landing. ■ SANDY POWELL reports, Page 4

S A D GO ODBYE S Sadly, we said goodbye to three beautiful people who will be forever connected to the Foundation. In December 2020 Carol passed away from a battle with stomach cancer. Before leaving us, she wanted to throw herself into raising awareness for those suffering. Carol knew her scars had pull, she knew those scars had influence, and she used them to the utmost of her ability to create awareness of being different. She displayed her beautiful self in the most open way she could, to influence many. Carol posed for a well-known photographer, Brian Cassey. The Portrait, “The Skin I’m In” made it into the Portrait of Humanity 2020 shortlist. KIDS Foundation with the support of Carol’s brother – Russell, created the Carol Mayer Trust in Carol’s honor.

Good friends are hard to find, harder to l

Cheeky Kane, known to the KIDS family as the funniest kid with a big heart. His wit, magic tricks and fantastic sense of humour made us laugh, entertained us and showed us a different way to manage life’s challenges. Sadly, Kane passed away in May 2021. We met Kane at Camp Phoenix, Tangalooma in 2013 and he had been buddied up with John Minto, a volunteer that had two sons of his own around the same age. As it turned out, they became best buddies. Kane loved life, lived it to the fullest and pushed the boundaries to the limit. Kane went through more challenges in life than any child deserves, but he just got on with it all and fought hard to overcome his battles. Kane is missed dearly.

Mental health is by far the greatest issue we have been dealing with during this pandemic. It was with great sadness that we lost one of our special young people Bec in September 2020. Tragic circumstances led Bec and her family to our Foundation 15 years ago after the car in which they were travelling burst into flames and claimed the life of her brother Chad. Bec’s health and emotional journey is one that she battled with since that day. Bec got to live her dream through KIDS the day she recorded a song, ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ with Liz Gaunt (her KIDS mentor) on an album that featured Guy Sebastian, Bachelor Girl, Pete Murray, Frankie J Holden and many more.
