GETTING ON WITH LIFE

Devonport brothers Fletcher and Spencer Connelly are enjoying life and making their mum extremely proud eight years after they survived horrific burns in a car fire. Fletcher is in Year 11 and recently started working at a supermarket while his outgoing younger brother Spencer is the joker who loves to stir the pot and is always out with friends when he’s not playing soccer. SAD GOODBYES

Sadly, we said goodbye to three beautiful people who will be forever connected to the Foundation.

In December 2020 Carol passed away from a battle with stomach cancer. Before leaving us, she wanted to throw herself into raising awareness for those suffering. Carol knew her scars had pull, she knew those scars had influence, and she used them to the utmost of her ability to create awareness of being different. She displayed her beautiful self in the most open way she could, to influence many. Carol posed for a well-known photographer, Brian Cassey. The Portrait, “The Skin I’m In” made it into the Portrait of Humanity 2020 shortlist.

KIDS Foundation with the support of Carol’s brother – Russell, created the Carol Mayer Trust in Carol’s honor.

Mental health is by far the greatest issue we have been dealing with during this pandemic. It was with great sadness that we lost one of our special young people Bec in September 2020. Tragic circumstances led Bec and her family to our Foundation 15 years ago after the car in which they were travelling burst into flames and claimed the life of her brother Chad.

Bec’s health and emotional journey is one that she battled with since that day. Bec got to live her dream through KIDS the day she recorded a song, ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ with Liz Gaunt (her KIDS mentor) on an album that featured Guy Sebastian, Bachelor Girl, Pete Murray, Frankie J Holden and many more. Cheeky Kane, known to the KIDS family as the funniest kid with a big heart. His wit, magic tricks and fantastic sense of humour made us laugh, entertained us and showed us a different way to manage life’s challenges. Sadly, Kane passed away in May 2021. We met Kane at Camp Phoenix, Tangalooma in 2013 and he had been buddied up with John Minto, a volunteer that had two sons of his own around the same age. As it turned out, they became best buddies.

Kane loved life, lived it to the fullest and pushed the boundaries to the limit. Kane went through more challenges in life than any child deserves, but he just got on with it all and fought hard to overcome his battles. Kane is missed dearly.

Never underestimate the valuable and important difference you make in every life you touch. For the impact you make today has a powerful rippling effect on every tomorrow.
