Centered, Not Scattered: A Mindful Approach to Back-to-School

As the summer winds down and backpacks replace beach bags, families everywhere feel the familiar buzz of back-toschool energy. It’s a season of new beginnings, but can also be a time of anxiety and overwhelm.

In today’s world, it's easy to fall into the trap of rushing through the back-to-school transition. But what if this year, it was handled differently? Instead of pushing through, we can pause and approach this change with calm, connection, and mindfulness, helping everyone feel more centered—not scattered—as they step into a new school year.

1Start

the Morning with Peace, Not Panic

Mornings set the tone for the entire day. Rather than jumping straight into the hustle, try creating a mindful morning ritual for the whole family:

•Begin with just two minutes of stillness—whether it's deep breathing, stretching, or listening to calming music while brushing teeth.

•Avoid the urge to check phones or turn on the news right away.

•Try placing a positive affirmation or gratitude note on the fridge or breakfast table.

Hair Style: Twobees - Calla Blow Dry
Location: The Slime Factory Miami

Even just a few minutes spent intentionally can help shift everyone’s mood and impact their day positively.

2Mindful Lunchboxes & Loving Touchpoints

Lunchtime isn’t just for fuel—it’s a midday reset. While nourishing the body, try nourishing the mind and spirit, too. Add this into your child’s lunchbox:

•A hand-written note of encouragement or a joke.

•A mantra or affirmation your child can keep in their pocket.

•A favorite snack they only get during school.

These little gestures remind kids they’re supported and loved, even when they are away from home.

3Easing

Anxiety with Curiosity and Compassion

New teachers and classrooms, and shifting social dynamics can create anxiety—even if your child doesn’t show it outright.

Instead of “Are you nervous?” try asking:

•“What are you most curious or excited about this year?”

•“What’s one thing that might feel difficult?”

•“Who do you hope to sit with at lunch or in class?”

These open-ended, lowpressure questions encourage your child to express his or her feelings and build trust. Let them know it’s okay and completely normal to feel a mix of emotions and you’re there to help navigate it together.

4Homework with

Heart

Rather than homework feeling like a chore, reframe it as a time to:

ocus and follow(not perfection).

Work together, even if you're doing your own tasks alongside them.

today,” or “I love seeing how you solved that.”

Homework doesn’t have to be a battle. It can become a time to connect and work together. Consider a short mindful movement break (like stretching, walking, or deep breathing) before homework begins to reset their attention span.

5Don’t

Forget to Walk the Talk

rest, support, or quiet?

•Can you simplify just one part of your day?

Modeling self-regulation, awareness and boundaries teaches kids more than any worksheet ever could.

6Ground

in Routine—but Leave Room for Grace

Kids thrive with rhythm, but a lack of flexibility can be stressful. Aim for consistency without perfection. Allow time for:

After-school decompression (free play, journaling, outdoor time).

Regular connection points (like a weekly "family check-in" or cozy Friday movie

Flexibility. Some days will go off script. That’s okay. Grace is part of the routine, too.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to be chaos. With a little intention and mindfulness, it can be a season of growth, grounding, and connection—for your child and for you.

This year, instead of just prepping the supplies, prepare the space: for calm mornings, open conversations, loving pauses, and shared wins. A centered child begins with a centered home. And that starts with you.

Little Havana Welcomes New Care Resource Health Center

Care Resource Community Health Centers, Inc. announces the opening of its newly expanded Little Havana Health Center, a 45,000-squarefoot facility that significantly increases access to care for individuals and families across the neighborhood. Located at 1800 SW 1st Street, the center officially opens to patients on May 27, 2025.

This expansion marks a major milestone for Care Resource, enabling the organization to serve up to 20,000 patients annually—more than double the capacity of its previous facility. The new center offers a centralized location for a wide range of essential healthcare services, improving coordination and reducing delays in care for those who rely on consistent access to medical support.

Little Havana has been identified as

an area with limited healthcare availability, where many residents face challenges such as limited insurance coverage, transportation issues, and a shortage of providers. The new health center is designed to address these gaps and offer streamlined, full-service care in one location.

The expanded health center includes primary care, pediatric care, behavioral health services, dental care, substance use treatment, and

an on-site pharmacy. It also houses case management offices, a medical laboratory, and additional support services.

“This new facility allows us to keep pace with the growing demand for services while maintaining the same level of personalized, patient-focused care,” said Dr. Steven Santiago, Interim CEO and

Little Havana, we are strengthening our commitment to accessible, high-quality healthcare that meets the needs of this vibrant community. Our aim is to keep families healthier and reduce avoidable hospital visits, ensuring they receive the right care at the right time."

Inside the new center, the number of adult exam rooms has increased from seven to 18, while pediatric exam rooms have grown from three to eight. Dental capacity has expanded with ten chairs, including two dedicated to children. Behavioral health and case management

staff have also increased, allowing for more one-on-one support and improved service coordination.

Little Havana is home to a population where nearly 30% of residents live without health insurance and 29% live in poverty.

About Care Resource

Chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension are common, often worsened by delayed care or limited access to preventive services. The new center helps address these challenges by providing early screenings, consistent follow-up, and coordinated treatment planning under one roof.

Care Resource’s expansion also contributes to the broader health system by easing the burden on local emergency rooms and hospitals. According to national healthcare data, every dollar spent on community-based care saves nearly two dollars in avoidable hospitalizations.

Care Resource, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), operates four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center delivers comprehensive, patient-centered care, including medical, behavioral, dental, housing, and STI prevention and testing services. The brand’s mission is to provide premium, next-generation skincare products with short and long-term benefits for children’s delicate skin. 6 Tricks for More Consistent Discipline

You’re gonna lose your phone for a week!” That is, if I could wrestle it out of her hands…which I probably couldn’t. And, come to think of it, I needed her to have that phone, so I knew when to pick her up from practice. Hmm. This was not a wellthought-out plan. Sometimes, we say things we don’t really mean. And our kids have probably figured this out. We all know parenting is hard. But being consistent with discipline has to be one of the hardest parenting struggles of all.

A lot of things can get in the way of being consistent with discipline. Everything from your own stress to your child’s behavior, to the weather could stand in the way of following through. But staying consistent is so important for kids. It lets them know what to expect and gives them a sense of security. Here are

6 tricks that will help you with more consistent discipline.

1Start with a high-priority issue. Sometimes we have a lot of things we want to change in our kids’ behavior. But Sara Bean, M.Ed. suggests we start with one specific, high-priority issue so we don’t burn out from biting off more than we can chew. Pick an issue like lying, bedtime, homework, or sneaking onto tech after lights out. For the next several weeks, this is the issue you’ll focus on most with your child. “Once you get more consistent in setting and enforcing limits in that one area, then you can branch out and start working on another,” Bean says.

2Explain the new boundary or rule with your child. Make sure she understands the rule and why it’s important. For example, “When

you lie about little things, it makes me question whether I can believe you about the big things. Trust is important, don’t you think?” Once she understands why you have the rule, let her know the consequence of breaking the rule. “If you lie, you’ll lose all screen privileges for at least one full day.” Letting your child know up front what the consequence is will help her make an informed decision in the days ahead.

3Be ready for pushback. Many kids will test you to see if your rule will stand. If you’ve been inconsistent with discipline in the past (join the club!), your child will likely take his chances to see what he can get away with the first few times. If tech in the bedroom has been an ongoing problem, enforce the same consequence every single time so when your child steps out of line, he knows with certainty the punishment. But keep in mind this is a transition time for kids as they learn the new rule. The pushback won’t last forever. Just remember your kids are looking to you for guidance, and if you don’t stay firm, it’ll take longer for them to adjust to the new limit you’ve set.

4Keep your own emotions in check. This is easier said than done, but try not to take your child’s pushback or defiance personally. “[A]s long as the behavior isn’t blatantly abusive or unsafe, it’s most effective to ignore it and remove yourself from the situation,” says Bean. What your child says during this adjustment period may be hurtful, but you’ve set these rules and boundaries for her benefit. Learning positive traits like honesty, obedience, and diligence are going to build your child’s character.

5Be aware of your weaknesses. When my child throws his arms

around me, apologizes, and says loving things, my resolve crumbles. I’m a sucker for my kids’ affection—and they know it. So, even if he says he’s sorry, I know I need to stay firm if I want to change a certain behavior. What are your weaknesses? Maybe you have a hard time with discipline when you’re tired or feeling stressed. Maybe it’s at certain times of the day—right after you’ve gotten home from work or when it’s the weekend and you just want your family to have fun. It’s in these more difficult moments that we have to take a breath, maybe say a silent prayer, and resolve to stick with the consequence.

6Remember, it takes time.

“Being consistent with your rules, values, limits, and consequences is a crucial part of establishing a culture of accountability in your home—the structure that upholds you the

parent as the authority that your child answers to,” says Bean. Getting to this point will take time. But don’t feel bad! Consistent discipline is a problem for most parents: 47% of us identified it as a goal in a University of Michigan survey. So, give yourself grace if you experience a setback or two, and then, keep trying.

Why the New School Year is the Perfect Time to Prioritize Orthodontic Care

As backpacks are packed, pencils are sharpened, and families settle back into school routines, there’s one more thing that should be on every parent’s back-to-school checklist: a visit to the orthodontist.

The start of a new school year isn’t just about academic goals—it’s also the perfect time to set your child up for success with their smile. As an orthodontist, I’ve seen firsthand how early planning and consistent care can make a huge difference not only in oral health but also in confidence, performance, and overall well-being.

Here’s why back-to-school season is an ideal time to start or continue orthodontic treatment:

1A Fresh Start for Healthy Habits

The structure of a new school year makes it easier for kids to establish healthy routines—including wearing aligners, brushing with braces, or attending regular orthodontic visits. Summer often brings looser schedules and travel, but fall routines bring the

kind of consistency that supports successful orthodontic care.

2Beat the Holiday Rush

Orthodontic offices tend to get busy during school breaks when families try to squeeze in appointments. Starting treatment in late summer or early fall gives you a head start before calendars fill up. It also allows time to adjust to new appliances before busy seasons and school photos!

3Confidence in the Classroom

We often hear from parents and students alike how much a confident smile boosts self-esteem. Whether your child is starting middle school, entering high school, or heading off to college, feeling good about their smile can make a real difference in how they carry themselves socially and academically.

4Ideal Timing for Growth and Treatment

Many orthodontic treatments are timed to coincide with a child’s growth and development. The school-age years— especially around ages 7 to 9 and 11 to

14—are often the best time to guide jaw growth, tooth alignment, bite correction, and to correct dental conditions that make the child prone to dental trauma. A back-to-school orthodontic checkup ensures your child is evaluated at the right time for optimal results.

5Flexible Scheduling While Routines Are Fresh

Early in the school year, most families are still settling into their new schedules, which means more flexibility for appointments. Starting early helps avoid scheduling challenges later in the semester when after-school activities and exams ramp up.

6Care and Compliance Make All the Difference

The success of orthodontic treatment depends heavily on how well students care for their appliances—and the school year is a great time to reinforce these habits. Here’s what we emphasize:

Braces: Students should brush after every meal, floss daily with special tools, and avoid sticky or hard foods that can damage brackets and wires. Keeping a small dental kit in their backpack helps them stay clean and confident all day.

Aligners (like Invisalign®): Aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day to work effectively. Students should rinse aligners regularly, clean them properly, and always store them in their case when not in use—never in a napkin or lunchbox!

Retainers: For students finishing treatment, retainers are key to keeping their hard-earned results. We encourage consistent wear and regular cleaning routines to prevent bacteria buildup and keep smiles straight long-term. Good hygiene isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about keeping teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment. We work closely with students to make these habits part of their daily routine.

7Set Goals That Go Beyond Grades

Orthodontic treatment takes time, and the beginning of the school year is a great moment to set personal goals.

completing treatment in time for prom, Starting in the fall helps align treatment timelines with those goals.

Make the Most of the School Year— Start with a Smile

If your child hasn’t had an orthodontic evaluation yet, or if you’ve been considering starting treatment, now is the time. Whether it’s traditional braces, clear aligners, or just a growth-monitoring check-up, we’re here to help your child put their best smile forward—this school year and beyond.
