Welcome to this fun-packed summer issue which is bursting with lots of great, local resources to help you make the most of the summer season. Whilst I write this, I am sat in the garden with the evening sun settling down, which makes a very welcome change.

Check out our School’s Out feature on page 14 - perfect for keeping the kids entertained at camps/workshops whilst you get on with work. If, like me, you juggle a job and parenting the holidays can be a challenge, so hopefully this feature will help take some of the stress out of planning. We also have a wonderful Family Fun Feature on page 22 with lots of ideas of places to visit, whether for a day or longer. On page 34 we have the tutors feature which should help guide you, whether you want to keep your child’s education running throughout the holiday or are looking for some extra support for the new academic year.

What Will Danny Do Today?

by Pippa Goodhart RRP £6.99 Egmont Publishing George and I enjoyed reading this book and we have now read it several times. He liked being able to choose the different options for Danny and it led to discussion about what might happen next. There was a lot going on in all the pictures and George enjoyed looking for different things and talking about what he saw. It was quite a long read, but the anticipation of wanting to know what Danny will get up to next kept his attention.

My First Mr Men 123 by Roger Hargreaves. RRP £4.99 Egmont Publishing Ellis really enjoys counting and numbers, so this was a perfect book for him. Being a board book means it’s robust for repetitive use and the pictures are simple but bright. The numbers on each page are large and Ellis liked copying me trying over the numbers with his finger. The only downside to this book is that the names of all the characters are not included, which for a toddler that needs to know everything and a mummy that doesn’t know everything, can be frustrating.

The Secret Railway by Wendy Meddour. RRP £5.99 Oxford University Press I really enjoyed reading The Secret Railway because I liked the part about the secret door to the railway. My Daddy goes on a train to work but this book was about a special train which goes on an adventure. Ella was my favourite character because she loved her hat!

I hope there is another adventure coming soon as I would love to read another one!

Star Wars The Snare Part of the Adventures In Wild Space series. RRP £6.99 Egmont Publishing I love the book because it was adventurous and it had different characters.

I like the names Linda and Milo. CR-8R is a bit like C-3PO. It was easy to get into and I really like a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. I did not like the Empire being evil. I would really recommend this book.

Tiger in a Tutu by Fabi Santiago RRP £11.99 Orchard Books

Daisy really enjoyed this wonderful story about a dancing tiger. She loved that the tiger was in a tutu. Also the pictures are very bright and colourful.

A lovely book to read again and again and highly recommended by both of us.

The Girl of Ink & Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. RRP £6.99 Chicken House This is a story of friendship and adventure.

Isabella goes on a journey to find her best friend Lupe, with only an unfinished map to lead her. She encounters ferocious animals, dark caves, abandoned villages and great danger.

Using her cartographer skills which were taught to her by her Ma and Da, Isabella tries to finish her Ma’s map. This is an emotional and exciting adventure that Isabella and Lupe face together.

I really enjoyed this story.

READING WITH CHILDREN

Reading with children

Research proves that children who enjoy reading do better at school in all subjects.

Reading together increases literacy skills and does so much more - it helps to build a strong and loving relationship between you and your child. And it’s never too early to start reading with your child!

Top tips for reading with your children

Set aside some time - Find somewhere quiet without any distractions - turn off the TV/radio/computer.

Ask your child to choose a book - Sharing books they have chosen shows you care what they think and that their opinion matters. This means they are more likely to engage with the book.

Sit close together - Encourage your child to hold the book themselves and/or turn the pages.

Point to the pictures - If there are illustrations, relate them to something your child knows. Ask them to describe the characters or situation or what will happen next. Encourage them to tell you the story by looking at the pictures.

Encourage your child to talk about the book - Talking about the characters and their dilemmas helps children understand relationships and is an excellent way for you to get to know each other or discuss difficult issues. Give your child plenty of time to respond. Ask them what will happen next, how a character might be feeling, or how the book makes them feel.

And lastly, above all - make it fun! - It doesn’t matter how you read with a child, as long as you both enjoy the time together.

Don’t be afraid to use funny voices: children love this!

This summer, the owners of the Chicken and Frog Bookshop are launching the Brentwood Children’s Literary Festival.

The first Festival will take place 22nd–30th July 2016, and with 19 separate events to choose from, you’ll be hard pressed to narrow it down to just one.

But, with ticket costs heavily subsidised by the Charity, the cost of just £3 per event means that you can meet a favourite author or two or three, without breaking the bank!

Events are scheduled across different venues, including Brentwood Library, Brentwood Theatre, Hogarth Primary School and the Chicken and Frog Bookshop.

The Brentwood Children’s Literary Festival has children very much in mind, with a cross section of authors and illustrators to suit ages from pre-school to teen. This is far more than a meet and greet festival, although you’ll get the chance to say hello and ask your chosen authors to sign books on the day. For example, both Sara Grant and J.D.Irwin are going to be running writing workshops and David O’Connell will be leading a writing and illustration workshop. In addition, the UK exclusive launch of Caighlan Smith’s new YA title, ‘Children of Icarus’, will round off the Festival this year.

And you can rest assured that all of the authors and illustrators will be on hand to answer your questions about their books and what it’s really like to create one. Thanks to the Chicken and Frog Bookshop, books will be available to purchase on the day – signed personally for you by the author.

Beanstalk Children’s Therapy

What is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)? Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the 7 senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioural responses. SPD is a condition that affects at least 1 in 20 children. It exists when a child’s nervous system is unable to organise sensory information to produce an appropriate response and, as a result, performance in a variety of everyday activities is affected. SPD can affect children in only one sense – e.g. hearing or touch – or multiple senses.

Most children with SPD are just as intelligent as their peers; however some have other diagnoses (such as ASD or ADHD). Early diagnosis is vital and can prevent secondary problems (such as anxiety, depression or other behavioural problems) from developing.

Warning signs may include trouble falling/ staying asleep, difficulty with toilet training, overly sensitive to noise or touch, or difficulty learning new motor skills. Once a child’s sensory processing difficulties are identified, they benefit from a treatment program of occupational therapy (OT) using a sensory integration (SI) approach.

OT-SI typically takes place in a sensoryrich environment, i.e. therapy gym. The OT provides the child with various play activities that are subtly structured, so they are constantly challenged but always successful. OT helps children with SPD to take part in typical childhood activities, such as socialising with peers, playing, learning, dressing, toileting and sleeping. Beanstalk Children’s Therapy offers OT-SI, as well as a variety of other specialist interventions. They are an established local independent therapy provider in Essex, who work closely with parents and teachers, providing education and support during all the sessions.

The Debut School of Performing Arts is performing ‘Honk!’ at The Towngate Theatre this summer.

They have just performed ‘It Snows’ in conjunction with The National Theatre at Queens Theatre. Since January 2016, young actors at the Debut Agency have featured in a Warner Brothers feature film, Asda commercial, Vodafone commercial, Ford commercial and Great British Bake Off commercial, not to mention a 6 month contract in Billy Elliot the Musical!

Theatretrain

Chelmsford and Maldon branches of Theatretrain’s nationwide chain of performing arts schools are excited to announce that in addition to their regular Saturday classes for young people they will be running two Summer Schools for young people aged between 6 - 18.

Academy Arts

Are you a budding actor, dancer or singer? Are you aged between 6 & 18 years? Then join Academy Arts for a fun packed week of performing arts workshops.

The summer school students will play drama games, create their own acting pieces and learn numbers and scenes from hit musicals such as High School Musical, Grease and much, much more. This fun and action packed week will conclude with a performance for family and friends of all they have learnt during the summer.

Students can either dip in for one or two days or can attend for the whole week at a reduced rate. There is also a 10% sibling discount available to those with more than one child.

They are running workshops in both Epping & Chelmsford.

The Epping workshop will be held from the 25th-29th July 2016 at Epping St Johns School, Bury Lane, CM16 5JB. The Chelmsford workshops will run from the 1st-5th August at Writtle Village Hall, The Green, Writtle, Chelmsford.CM1 3DU. Workshops run from 11am-3pm Monday to Friday.

SCHOOL’S OUT Phoenix Out Of School Club

The Before & After School Club opens at 7.30am. The children enjoy breakfast and a variety of activities until they are dropped off at school. The After School Club runs from school pickups to 6.00pm, where once again there will be a variety of activities on offer; opportunities to complete homework, socialise with friends, relax and enjoy Forest School activities as well as ending the day with a home cooked evening meal.

The club accommodates up to 26 children within a homely environment where children can choose from a variety of rooms with varying activities, as well as enjoying the large garden facility.

The Holiday Club operates during all school holidays including half terms (with the exception of the Christmas closure) between the hours of 8.00am to 5.00pm (with additional early starts and late finishes available upon request).

A range of activities and theme days will be on offer. Forest School sessions are also incorporated into the club. The children enjoy a home cooked menu created by the chef.

The Forest School sessions encourages the use of natural materials in the outdoor environment where children can explore and construct in an imaginative way, having access to materials where they can return and repeat actions and develop ideas. There are 5 qualified Forest School leaders who plan each Forest School session around the individual needs of the group.

Activities that may be included are low level climbing, mini beast hunts, natural crafts i.e. making dream catchers from willow, collages from natural materials, mud sculptures, using tools, weaving, developing knowledge of trees and plants, shelter building and knot tying.

Razzamataz students are flying high

TV star Michelle Collins from EastEnders and Coronation Street met with budding young performers from Razzamataz Theatre Schools at The Cliffs Pavilion in Southend after a recent performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which is currently on tour, in which she plays the Baroness. “Having the opportunity to watch live theatre is very important and we are delighted that as a school we can offer students discounted prices to give them this wonderful experience” says Catherine Morales, Principal of the Rayleigh school.” Inspired by the production, Razzamataz Rayleigh is running a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang themed Summer School (15th-18th August). “Having the chance to perform is paramount to building a child’s confidence” explains Catherine, “children will all get the opportunity to perform their showcase to friends and families and it’s a chance for everyone to shine. It is also a wonderful lesson in teamwork and shows them what can be achieved in a short space of time when you pull together, share ideas and work hard.”

At Summer School the emphasis is on having fun and bringing out the creativity and unique potential in each and every student. It is open to anyone aged 4 – 17 and will include various genres, from traditional musical theatre through to pop singing and street dance, with circus skills plus arts and crafts as an added bonus. Coalhouse Fort, Tilbury Essex

Coalhouse Fort is a mid-Victorian fort built between 1861 – 1874 to defend the River Thames and London from Napoleon III and continued to be manned by both the Army and Royal Navy until 1962 when it was handed over to Thurrock Council. From 1983 it has been operated and maintained by the Coalhouse Fort Project to preserve and develop it for future generations. It is open on the last Sunday of each month and Bank Holidays from March – November each year with a number of special events.

The summer months at the Railway always include great events and this year is no exception. In August the Railway has a new visitor: Chase & Marshall from Paw Patrol. The summer season ends with an entertaining Victorian Weekend.

More than Mountain biking at Hadleigh Park this Summer!

The remains of Hadleigh Castle, an impressive ruin of a fortress built over 700 years ago, immortalised on canvas by John Constable, can also be found only a short walk away, along with the Salvation Army Rare Breeds Centre.

The galleries reveal how children have learnt, played and lived over the centuries, with a fascinating collection of toys, games, art and design for kids, dolls’ houses, furniture, paintings and clothes.

These quirky and inventive programmes shaped the childhood memories of millions, created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin. 25 July – 31 August Gold bars, Banknotes, a crown and even a cat (yes a cat!) are just a few of the treasured items found within the Museum, each with its own story to tell. Explore the Museum this summer and discover the stories behind your favourite objects, then make your visit a day to remember by creating your own photo album. Choose from a selection of Museum images and use your creative talents to tell your own story.

The fun doesn’t stop there! There are plenty of attractions in the Museum to ensure a fun-filled family day out, including giant banknote jigsaws and the opportunity to test your safe cracking skills; there is a small prize for those who can crack the code. Visitors can even hold a genuine gold bar and have the chance to take a #GoldVaultSelfie, which can be shared on social media, whilst exploring the glistening Discover Gold display.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays for the duration of the event members of the banknote education team will be conducting short interactive presentations on banknotes in the Museum cinema at 1:00pm.

In 2010 Chelmsford Museum opened a new, modern extension to the side of the original Victorian House ‘Oaklands’, which doubled its size. The modern spacious building fits beautifully into Oaklands Park, which itself is popular with families, having free car parking, playgrounds and lots of grass to sit and picnic or run about on! With a variety of events and activities taking place throughout the year, such as craft workshops, Explorer Passports, trails and quizzes, there’s something for all the family to enjoy, including free entry.

The Museum has varied, interactive displays, including: the Essex Regiment Museum, The Story of Chelmsford, Bright Sparks and Marconi, social history, coins, glassware, ceramics, natural history and an Art Gallery.

Popular exhibits include a live observation beehive, a rotating glitter ball and a stuffed Russian brown bear!

The main entrance to the Museum is fully accessible with gently ramped paviors through to fully automated doors.
