Celebrate a summer of art with Octopus Ahoy!

Follow the trail and win amazing rewards and prizes by simply scanning the QR codes on the base of the octopus sculptures; from free ice creams to afternoon teas – this is the fun, FREE activity you’ve been looking for this stay-cation summer. Octopus Ahoy! is an engaging, family-friendly public art trail for all to enjoy – and in a safe, socially-distanced way. Stunning sculptures will arrive ashore on 25th June, taking pride of place in parks, on streets and in open spaces across the Tendring District and beyond. This free, fun summer activity is a chance to visit amazing, artist creations, so why not become a ‘tourist in your own town’, get your step count up in the fresh air, and earn ‘ink-credible’ rewards? The Octopus Ahoy! project is a celebration of local art, history and community spirit, involving more than 60 Essex schools. Originally planned for summer 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic until 2021, the art trail helps mark 400 years (in 2020) since the historical voyage of the Mayflower ship to the new world, with Harwich’s own Christopher Jones at the helm, and celebrates 150 Years of Clacton on Sea. Day trippers in Essex can follow the art trail throughout the summer using the FREE Octopus Ahoy! App which is available for download from 1st June on both App and Android. The app will reveal the locations of each sculpture and allow users to earn amazing rewards for ‘collecting’ each octopus design on the list from the start of the trail on Friday 25th June. In all, there will be 100 quirky octopus sculptures to visit, including more than 30 large, hand-decorated sculptures decorated by local professional artists and generously sponsored by local businesses.

Octopus Ahoy! In partnership with Tendring District Council, is being delivered as part of the celebrations of Mayflower 400™️ and 150 Years of Clacton, by KAT Marketing. Find out more about Octopus Ahoy! at www.octopusahoy.co.uk or join in the conversation on social media using #OctopusAhoy.

Section Title This time of year when the garden is in summer bloom looks absolutely gorgeous with the different colours and varieties. However, did you know certain plants can be a danger not only to pets but to you and your family too.

Poisonous plants to avoid in your summer garden

Green fingered Brits are being urged to look out for poisonous plants in their gardens this summer. But are they safe? We find out some types that be harmful to humans and pets. Among the list are garden favourites like Lily of the Valley, Lantana and Hydrangea. If eaten, these can lead to symptoms including vomiting and nasty rashes. Others have more sinister sounding names including Deadly Nightshade which can lead to hallucinations and convulsions. Even dessert favourite Rhubarb can cause damage if you eat the leaves. A spokesperson for GardenBuildingDirect.co.uk said: “Many plants in our garden may appear innocent at first glance, but there are some silent assassins that can pose, in some cases, a deadly risk. “It’s particularly important that in the summer months when a lot of these flowers are in full bloom we protect ourselves, younger children and even our pets too. “Vomiting, rashes and heart problems can all occur from some of these plants so it’s important to remain educated and make sensible choices in our gardens.” Hydrangea These contain cyanide. But don’t worry, you need to eat lots for it to be fatal. English yew Almost every part of this is poisonous, especially the leaves and seeds. Eating these can leave you feeling dizzy, have a dry mouth and dilated pupils. Tansy Often used in gardens as a natural insect repellent, the Tansy plant isn’t a dog's best friend either. The oil produced from the plant can leave those who are susceptible to dermatitis with irritable skin. Lily of the Valley It may smell and look lovely but the toxic compounds in Lily of the Valley called cardiac glycosides can leave you feeling dizzy, vomiting and covered in a rash. Oleander Oleanders have a high concentration of toxins within its nectar and sap and significant exposure can cause severe digestive issues. Definitely one to avoid if you have small children or pets. Rhododendron This beautiful plant produces mad honey. In Roman times troops were given honey made from the plant which poisoned them. Symptoms include vomiting, confusion and heart problems. Rhubarb Delicious in a crumble as long as you just use the stalk and avoid the leaves. Eating too many may cause your kidneys to shut down. Lantana This popular summer pot plant can be deceiving with its bright petals and beautiful shape. As well as the leaves being capable of leaving an irritable rash, the berries are also seriously poisonous and ingesting them can cause particular harm to animals and young children. Daffodil The bulbs are the dangerous part of this plant. If you have a dog that loves to dig, keep them away from your daffs. Eating them will cause vomiting, convulsion and diarrhoea. Deadly nightshade Most common in central, eastern and southern parts of the UK, this can cause dilated pupils, problems balancing and a rash. It may eventually lead to hallucinations and convulsions.

We have just learnt what garden plants are dangerous, now we find out from Roy Lamb, Nasslor Health Drinks, how introducing Nettles (yes, nettles) into your diet has great health benefits. It's a great way to get your kids trying new things too.

Stinging Nettles - The New Superfood? The chances are that your family does not see the humble stinging nettle in a particularly pleasant light! At best, it is seen as a weed. At worst, it is the bane of many a countryside walk with small children. Despite this, it has some rather extraordinary properties. Health Benefits of Nettle Nettle contains a significant concentration of biologically active compounds, particularly carotenoids and polyphenols, that are good for you and your body (1). Nettle is known to lower blood pressure (2) and blood sugar levels (3), reduce the effects of skin photoaging (4), help in fighting the symptoms of hay fever (5), have anti-bacterial properties (6) and boost your immune system (7). It is also particularly nutrient-rich, containing a similar level of Omega-3 as spinach, comparable levels of essential amino acids as chicken, 100% of your recommended daily allowance (RDA) of Vitamin A, up to 50% RDA of Calcium, 20% RDA of Fibre and up to 12% RDA of Iron (8). Once prepared or cooked, nettle is in many ways more nutritious than Brussel sprouts and spinach! But what do they taste like? Once cooked or dried, nettles taste like a mix between spinach and cucumber. Just like spinach, nettle can make a fabulous addition to many dishes, adding extra flavour and a dash of colour. Won’t they sting me? Of course, most nettles found in the UK are stinging nettles, so if you are gathering your own, make sure to wear thick gloves. Soaking the nettles in water for a few days, drying or cooking them will, however, remove their stinging properties and render them harmless. So, how can you turn this little loved weed into a family mealtime favourite that even the children will enjoy. How to bring this new superfood into your diet Preparing Wild Nettles If you’ve gathered your own nettles, you’ll need to prepare them first to remove the sting. The easiest way is to drop them into a pot of boiling salted water for about five minutes. To retain the bright green colour, plunge your boiled nettles into a bowl of ice water before draining. For dried nettles, wash them and hang them up for a few days or use a dehydrator if you have one. Once prepared, nettles can be safely frozen, allowing you to prepare them in bulk and use them in a variety of dishes. Pro tip: If you are using dried nettle, simply steep in water to rehydrate before adding to your recipe. You can then enjoy some nettle tea while you make your nutritious nettle food and drink. Eat Nettle Soup Nettle soup is a delicious traditional recipe enjoyed across the world. It is also easy to tweak the recipe to suit your taste. Try frying some onions and garlic in some coconut (or other) oil. Once softened, add your prepared nettles (coarsely chopped), carrots and either potato or rice, along with some vegetable stock. Simmer until the

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING

potatoes or rice is cooked and blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. To serve, try adding a dollop of soya yoghurt, a drizzle of olive oil, or a splash of lemon juice. Drink a Nettle Infusion Dried nettles can be easily made into tea. Simply chop your nettles fairly finely, add boiling water, leave for five minutes and strain. Unfortunately, nettle tea on its own isn’t particularly tasty, despite the health benefits. Instead, try a ready-prepared infusion like Emunity - a new soft drink harnessing the healing and immunity-boosting effects of nettle in a ready to drink can. The nettle drinks are mixed with Austrian spring water and garden botanicals to make two great flavours. Mix Nettle Pesto Pesto is delicious spread on some warm focaccia or stirred into pasta. You could even use it to add flavour to a risotto or pizza. While pesto is traditionally made with basil leaves, these can be easily substituted with your prepared nettles. Simply roast some pine nuts or walnuts (or any other nut or seed of your choice), remove from the heat and blend with your nettles, some grated Parmigiano Reggiano (or vegetarian equivalent), a few garlic cloves, a pinch of sea salt and as much olive oil as required to reach your desired consistency. Blend a Tropical Nettle Smoothie For a wonderfully green yet delicious tropical smoothie, blend together a handful of your prepared (and hydrated) nettles, banana, cucumber, coconut milk, avocado and pineapple. A perfect vegan-friendly, nutrient-rich drink for a hot summer’s day. Really, the possibilities for bringing nettle into your diet are almost endless. Anywhere a recipe calls for cooked spinach, you can easily substitute nettle, and with delicious drinks containing nettle now on the market, it is possible to get a healthy dose of this wonderful superfood into your family’s diet on a daily basis.

👍👍👍👍👍

Our verdict: This is a great app. It is educational and gets the kids active. However, the only negative is that there isn't many trails in Essex. This is more if you are traveling the UK. I'm sure this will change so keep looking out. Love Exploring is a free to download app that allows users to choose a dinosaur safari, space walk or guided trail in their local park or town. It uses clever augmented reality technology to bring the dinosaurs and planets to life and also tests users on their knowledge with fun quizzes. Last year over 40,000 users of the Love Exploring app walked the equivalent of 2.5 times around planet Earth! That’s 62,252 miles in total. This year, the team behind the app have set an ambitious challenge to beat last year's total. They believe with the increase in families staying in the UK that together they can walk the distance to the moon, a whopping 252,088 miles! There are over 50 locations across England the app will show activities for and as it recognises your location, it’s ideal if you’ve driven to a campsite or even the coast for your staycation. You’ll be able to see the nearest trail, walk or safari and learn more about the area you are visiting. How can you get involved? Download the free Love Exploring App Choose a location close to you and then a Dinosaur Safari, Space Walk or Guided Trial near you or your UK holiday destination The distance you cover will be tracked on the Love Exploring App and used towards the challenge total Use your phone or a fitness tracker to monitor your own steps and share your numbers along with a photo of your family having fun using this hashtag: #WalkToTheMoon tagging @LoveExploringHQ on Twitter or sharing to the Love Exploring Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LoveExploringApp The app is free to use, but the system uses Augmented Reality and so unfortunately it won’t work on all mobile phones. Check out your App Store for details by searching for the Love Exploring app on Google's Play store or the Apple App Store and then check out the compatibility guide.

Join Colchester Museums to decode Colchester’s earliest inhabitants this summer! Head to Colchester Castle and discover a fascinating new exhibition that examines the lives of some of Britain’s earliest Romans who were laid to rest almost 2000 years ago in Colchester. This summer, visit Colchester Castle, one of the most popular family attractions in the East of England. The Castle is Europe’s largest Norman Keep which was built on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, the central focus for Boudica’s revenge on the Romans. Inside you will find over 2,500 years of history packed into its historic building, with many nationally important objects on display including Roman finds from the time that Colchester was Britain’s First Roman Capital. There’s plenty of fun to be had with history, race a Roman chariot, fire a ballista or even create your very own Roman mosaic, making it a great day out for the whole family. Whilst you are visiting don’t miss the Castle’s new exhibition which opens on the 24 July. Decoding The Roman Dead will be unveiling the hidden stories of Roman Colchester’s earliest inhabitants, unlocking the world of life and death almost 2,000 years ago. The exhibition is the result of Colchester Museums working with archaeologists and specialists to ‘decode’ the hidden stories of 40 of Colchester’s residents during a time of invasion, construction, and dramatic change. Through new scientific research techniques, the team have reconstructed the identity and lives of these people: where they came from in the Roman empire, what illnesses they lived with, and how they were cremated at their funerals. This is the first time that Roman cremation burials have undergone the scientific technique of ‘isotope-analysis’ conducted to reveal where people grew up and travelled from in the empire, so its findings are truly significant. Over 200 objects associated with the burial of Colchester’s Roman Dead will feature in the exhibition alongside items from the Colchester Archaeological Trust including Roman burial goods that have never been displayed to the public before. Visitors will also be able to see mysterious burial vessels known as face pots, along with the famous Statue of Mercury. The exhibition will wow audiences and showcase ground-breaking research. This summer put a trip to Colchester Castle on your to do list and immerse yourself in Colchester’s rich history. Join Colchester Museums in delving beneath the skin of Britain’s earliest Romans who were laid to rest almost 2000 years ago and understand more about the way ancient families lived and cared for one another in life, and in death, in Roman Colchester. The exhibition opens on the 24 July and runs until the 6 January 2022. Entry to Colchester Castle Museum, includes entry to Decoding The Roman Dead. Stagecoach Chelmsford

Come and learn and perform the songs that made Disney’s High School Musical such a smash hit. Songs like Breaking Free, Get Your Head in the Game, and We’re All in This Together. The chance to learn and perform the songs and the dances that made the movie such a success is open to youngsters from six to 18 years old at the Stagecoach Chelmsford Summer Workshop. The first hit film was followed by two sequels and a spinoff series on Disney Plus. Come along and find out why the High School Musical was such a success. Those taking part will learn the show in a week and perform it in front of an invited audience. It will give parents and grandparents the chance to see their child perform on stage. The workshop runs from 2nd to 6th August at the King Edward VI Grammar School in central Chelmsford. At it the youngsters who take part will be put through their paces by seasoned teachers, many of whom have performed in London’s West End and on TV. All of the teachers are DBS checked and are experienced in getting the best performances out of children while they have a real fun time. Everyone who comes to the workshop will get a speaking part and will appear in a fully costumed show at the end of the week. No experience is needed for would-be performers who will learn all they need to perform the show from the talented teachers. This is just the thing for youngsters who have been cooped up after a difficult few months. Lucy Packard, the Principal of Stagecoach Chelmsford said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the chance to learn the songs and dances from High School Musical. It is a fantastic show, and we know this will be one of our most popular workshops yet. “Stagecoach Chelmsford meets week in week out throughout the school term led by our fabulous group of teachers who the kids love. And the week-long workshop is like that – but in a more concentrated form. “It will give those who take part the chance to act, to sing and to dance. It will be a brilliant experience, not only great fun, but it will give those who attend the chance to challenge themselves and develop new confidence and new skills. It is going to be a great week.” Stagecoach Chelmsford is part of a network of more than 700 theatre schools across the UK providing top quality instruction in acting, singing and dancing to youngsters between the ages of six and eighteen. To find out more about the workshop visit https://www.stagecoach.co.uk/ chelmsford#workshop, email chelmsford@stagecoach.co.uk or call 07788543644. Childcare vouchers accepted.

SCHOOL'S OUT Stagecoach Colchester Summer Workshop

"Amelia really enjoyed herself and admitted to nearly crying at the end of the show because she was so happy! Thank you for a brilliant time." This was some of the lovely feedback we received following our last Summer Holiday Workshop in 2019! Now that we can meet and perform together again, come and join us in Colchester this summer for a packed, fun-filled week of acting, singing and dancing inspired by the hit Disney film “Moana”. A special Stagecoach workshop for 4-7 year olds will be running at the fabulous Headgate Theatre, 9.30-12.30 daily from 2nd to 6th August. From the moment they arrive, the children will be caught up in an atmosphere of fun and creativity. They will develop self-confidence and skill. Our professional teachers at Stagecoach Colchester are very experienced with this young age group and will ensure that all the children, even the less confident, are fully involved and have a wonderful time. You will be surprised at how much can be achieved in just 5 short sessions! The week culminates in a short performance for families and friends, which is bound to be an extra special occasion this year, after not being able to perform together throughout the pandemic. The workshop is open to all - you do not have to be a current Stagecoach student to take part. EDUCATION

Saturday 10 July – Tuesday 31 August 2021 The Wild World Heroes are coming to a library near you this summer!

Essex libraries are teaming up with World Wildlife Fund for a very special nature-themed challenge that will inspire you to stand up for the planet! Our Wild World Heroes live in Wilderville, a pretty cool place, but there are lots of things that the Wild World Heroes can do to make their town even better for the people and animals that live there. The challenge runs from Saturday 10 July to Tuesday 31 August in all Essex libraries and mobile libraries. Children are being asked to read 6 books to help the Wilderville children make a difference to the environment. As they read library books, they will collect stickers for their folder. After reading 6 books they earn their certificate and medal. Children can read any library book of their choice; fiction, non-fiction, picture books or books they share with parents and carers – they all count. The under threes are not forgotten with a special version of Wild World Heroes just for them. The Summer Reading Challenge is delivered by libraries and produced by The Reading Agency. It is open to all children, free of charge. Children can take part in the online Summer Reading Challenge on the Wild World Heroes website to earn digital rewards. Keep up to date with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge by following them on Facebook and Twitter
