Reading with children

Research proves that children who enjoy reading do better at school in all subjects. Reading together increases literacy skills and does so much more - it helps to build a strong and loving relationship between you and your child. And it’s never too early to start reading with your child!

Top tips for reading with your children

Set aside some time - Find somewhere quiet without any distractions - turn off the TV/radio/computer. Ask your child to choose a book - Sharing books they have chosen shows you care what they think and that their opinion matters. This means they are more likely to engage with the book. Sit close together - Encourage your child to hold the book themselves and/or turn the pages. Point to the pictures - If there are illustrations, relate them to something your child knows. Ask them to describe the characters or situation or what will happen next. Encourage them to tell you the story by looking at the pictures. Encourage your child to talk about the book - Talking about the characters and their dilemmas helps children understand relationships and is an excellent way for you to get to know each other or discuss difficult issues. Give your child plenty of time to respond. Ask them what will happen next, how a character might be feeling, or how the book makes them feel. And lastly, above all - make it fun! - It doesn’t matter how you read with a child, as long as you both enjoy the time together. Don’t be afraid to use funny voices: children love this! This information was taken from www.booktrust.org.uk where you can find out more about reading and access some fantastic resources

This summer, the owners of the Chicken and Frog Bookshop are launching the Brentwood Children’s Literary Festival.

The first Festival will take place 22nd–30th July 2016, and with 19 separate events to choose from, you’ll be hard pressed to narrow it down to just one. But, with ticket costs heavily subsidised by the Charity, the cost of just £3 per event means that you can meet a favourite author or two or three, without breaking the bank! Events are scheduled across different venues, including Brentwood Library, Brentwood Theatre, Hogarth Primary School and the Chicken and Frog Bookshop. The Brentwood Children’s Literary Festival has children very much in mind, with a cross section of authors and illustrators to suit ages from pre-school to teen. This is far more than a meet and greet festival, although you’ll get the chance to say hello and ask your chosen authors to sign books on the day. For example, both Sara Grant and J.D.Irwin are going to be running writing workshops and David O’Connell will be leading a writing and illustration workshop. In addition, the UK exclusive launch of Caighlan Smith’s new YA title, ‘Children of Icarus’, will round off the Festival this year. And you can rest assured that all of the authors and illustrators will be on hand to answer your questions about their books and what it’s really like to create one. Thanks to the Chicken and Frog Bookshop, books will be available to purchase on the day – signed personally for you by the author. For full details of what’s on offer, visit www.brentwoodlitfest.com where you can order your tickets at the click of a button. 01277 230068 info@brentwoodlitfest.com @BwdLitFest

BOOKS TO READ R EV IEWED BY LOCAL CHILDR EN

What Will Danny Do Today? by Pippa Goodhart RRP £6.99 Egmont Publishing George and I enjoyed reading this book and we have now read it several times. He liked being able to choose the different options for Danny and it led to discussion about what might happen next. There was a lot going on in all the pictures and George enjoyed looking for different things and talking about what he saw. It was quite a long read, but the anticipation of wanting to know what Danny will get up to next kept his attention. Reviewed by George Munson aged 4 and his

The Secret Railway by Wendy Meddour. RRP £5.99 Oxford University Press I really enjoyed reading The Secret Railway because I liked the part about the secret door to the railway. My Daddy goes on a train to work but this book was about a special train which goes on an adventure. Ella was my favourite character because she loved her hat! I hope there is another adventure coming soon as I would love to read another one!

Reviewed by Charlotte Smith, aged 5

My First Mr Men 123 by Roger Hargreaves. RRP £4.99 Egmont Publishing Ellis really enjoys counting and numbers, so this was a perfect book for him. Being a board book means it’s robust for repetitive use and the pictures are simple but bright. The numbers on each page are large and Ellis liked copying me trying over the numbers with his finger. The only downside to this book is that the names of all the characters are not included, which for a toddler that needs to know everything and a mummy that doesn’t know everything, can be frustrating.Reviewed by Ellis

Tiger in a Tutu by Fabi Santiago RRP £11.99 Orchard Books

Daisy really enjoyed this wonderful story about a dancing tiger. She loved that the tiger was in a tutu. Also the pictures are very bright and colourful. A lovely book to read again and again and highly recommended by both of us. Reviewed by Daisy Amoss age 4 and her mum.

Star Wars The Snare Part of the Adventures In Wild Space series. RRP £6.99 Egmont Publishing I love the book because it was adventurous and it had different characters. I like the names Linda and Milo. CR-8R is a bit like C-3PO. It was easy to get into and I really like a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. I did not like the Empire being evil. I would really recommend this book.

The Girl of Ink & Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. RRP £6.99 Chicken House This is a story of friendship and adventure. Isabella goes on a journey to find her best friend Lupe, with only an unfinished map to lead her. She encounters ferocious animals, dark caves, abandoned villages and great danger. Using her cartographer skills which were taught to her by her Ma and Da, Isabella tries to finish her Ma’s map. This is an emotional and exciting adventure that Isabella and Lupe face together. I really enjoyed this story. Reviewed By Klara Reeves,

Help yourself to better health in Mile End with Best Foot Forward News headlines tell us to do more physical activity, but it’s difficult finding time if you have a busy family life. Best Foot Forward (BFF) is a pilot project funded by Colchester Borough Council to encourage Mile End residents to walk, cycle or use buses for short local journeys, as “active travel” is a simple way to increase exercise. All families in Colchester can take free Bikeability courses during school holidays, to help beginners and increase the confidence of existing cyclists. BFF will also be setting up social rides to highlight short cuts and quiet routes, as well as venturing into the peaceful lanes just north of Colchester. And to encourage the walking habit from an early age, BFF is funding weekly play walks for primary school children. A trained Forest School teacher meets families at the school gate to talk, walk, explore and play all the way to green spaces right on the doorstep. The Preslands live in Mill Road and mum Vicky says the family likes to stay healthy by being active. “We leave the car at home when we can. My husband walks to the station, the children walk to school and dance classes, and we walk to the shops and to the woods to get some fresh air.” Warren and Michelle Hallworth are keen for their sons Nathan (9) and Adam (7) to get into the habit of taking exercise. They regularly walk the dog and ride their bikes on Mile End rec and have also tried the Wivenhoe Trail. “I’m still a bit nervous about the boys cycling on the road,” says Michelle, “so the Bikeability training sounds really useful. Nathan walks to Myland School by himself and, after a bit of practice over the summer, the idea is for him to cycle in September.”

“69% of women and 57% of men do not take enough physical activity to benefit their health. For most people the easiest and most acceptable forms of physical activity are those that can be incorporated into everyday life. Examples include walking or cycling instead of driving.” Chief Medical Officer for England

Emily Harrup hasn’t owned a car for 9 years. “My kids are 9, 7 and 18 months old and we mainly travel on foot, bike and bus,” she says. “I like the fact that the kids are learning to travel in different ways; they learn social skills from other people, and get to know different routes. This will make them more independent as they get older. My nine year old and I are already talking about him using the bus by himself next year and he regularly walks or cycles to local shops when we are short of something.” Lisa Bowden got rid of the family car over 5 years ago after realising how much of their budget was being eaten up by keeping it on the road. “There are some journeys where we really do need a car,” she says, “so our family is part of a mini car club where five of us share a car and pay as we go. Why waste time on travel when there is so much to enjoy here in our local community? Although it takes extra effort and organisation living without a car, the health and financial benefits outweigh the negatives.” If you live in or off Mile End Road and Bergholt Road and want to find out more about active travel, have a look at the BFF website (www. bffcolchester.org.uk). Just fill in the short survey, and enter the free prize draw to win the latest Fitbit Alta. For more information about Cycle Colchester, see page 31 and for more information about play walks see www.huathe.co.uk

“Over 70% of children in the UK do not meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity, and as a consequence suffer from increased levels of low self worth, self esteem, and self reported happiness.” Public Health England

FOOTGOLF at Playgolf Colchester is becoming extremely popular – don’t miss out on having some great family fun in the summer holidays. Footgolf is a fusion of two great sports – golf and football. You can play in a group of up to four players. You start at the tee box and take it in turns to get the football into the football-sized hole. Whoever has the lowest score wins. Therew is an 8 hole course set aside from the main 18 hole course where the Footgolf is played. It is great way of spending some time with the family or simply having a giggle with a group of friends. Adult is £7pp and a child (12 years and under) is only £3pp. Plus there is a great offer where you can make a meal of it and get a pizza included: £12.50 per adult and only £7 per child. You can play Footgolf 7 days a week. Pizzas are freshly made to order and baked in a wood burning pizza oven, with toppings to suit everybody, and you can enjoy your pizza either al fresco or in the family friendly restaurant The Kitchen Club. Members of the Association of Professional Tuition Centres with over 35 centres in the UK, they have a reputation for delivering quality tuition at affordable prices. Some are high achievers who need to be stretched further, whilst others simply need encouragement and support to achieve their full learning potential. Centres are located in Colchester at Mason Road (by The Range) and 99 London Rd Stanway (next to Seapets); Station Rd, Clacton and a new centre in Harwich. Sessions normally last 80 minutes which gives time for six different enjoyable activities in English and Maths. Every student follows their own individual study plan using worksheets, textbooks and software materials. The tutor is available to guide them through it. Homework is then set for completion before the next lesson. They are also an exam Centre. Your child will enjoy learning with Ace Tuition, who use a variety of teaching methods to maximise the child’s learning potential. The child can work at their own pace to progress. As they achieve and succeed in reaching their learning goals their confidence will grow. Older students study with specialist teachers in English Maths and Science. Other Improvements mean they can offer individual 1:1 tuition or home tuition. Providing facilities to study from home which starts from £7 per week and can be combined with lessons taught at Centre if desired. Parents get weekly reports with guidance for improvement. Kids have lots of opportunities on holiday to run around and get plenty of exercise. Here are some ideas for healthy activities that cost little or nothing. Physical activity is essential for your child’s health. It helps them develop strong bones and muscles, maintain a healthy weight and promotes their independence. Most of all, physical activity can be great fun for you and your children. Wherever you live in the UK, there are plenty of opportunities for you and your family to be active in your area.

Walking, running around and playing

Make time for outings to a green space near you, such as a local park, wood or nature reserve, and get the kids walking, running and playing. If you want to try somewhere new, use the following resources to search for options near you.

Green Flag parks

The Green Flag scheme recognises parks, community gardens and nature reserves that are welcoming, clean and well maintained. Go to Green Flag Award to find your nearest award-winning parks or reserves.

Woods and forests

To find out about woods and forests near you and the activities on offer this summer, see the Woodland Trust and Forestry Commission websites.

Accessible walks

To find walks that are accessible for people pushing buggies and for wheelchair users, see Walks with Buggies and Walks with Wheelchairs. For more information on why walking is good for you and tips for making it fun, see the Walk4Life website.

Cycling

HALL FOR HIRE Theatricool Studio for hire

for rehearsal space; children’s parties; vintage and corporate events. Belle Vue Rd, Colchester, CO1 1 AX. 07736 713909 enquiries@theatricool.co.uk

Strictly speaking, cycling is not free, since you need a bike before you can start pedalling. However, once you have the right equipment, it’s a very cheap form of exercise and one that can be enjoyed by all ages. With more free time available in the holidays, it’s a chance to go on a longer bike ride. The following websites offer suggestions for familyfriendly routes.

Sustrans Sustrans co-ordinates the National Cycle Network, which offers thousands of miles of walking and cycle routes on traffic-free paths and quiet lanes, as well as traffic-calmed minor roads across the UK. Visit the Sustrans website to find cycle routes near you.

Forestry Commission You can use the Forestry Commission’s website to search for cycle trails in woods and forests.

Cycling tips

If you’re new to cycling or haven’t cycled for a long time, take a look at our guide to cycling for beginners. You could also consider enrolling on a cycling training course. Visit Bikeability for more information on the national standard training scheme. For more information on why cycling is a great way to stay healthy, along with tips on buying a bike and staying safe, see the Change4Life website.

Swimming

Swimming can be a great way to get active as a family. Swim4Life has ideas for games you can play together in the pool. Visit these websites to find somewhere near you where you can have fun with the kids.

Local swimming pools

Some local councils offer free swimming to children aged 16 and under, particularly during the school holidays. Search for your local council to find out if this is available in your area.

RNLI

A day at the seaside won’t break the bank, but 7,000 visitors a year get into serious trouble at the beach. It’s wise to visit a beach with trained lifeguards. Find out which beaches have RNLI lifeguards.

Outdoor Swimming Society

Open water swimming can be dangerous, but you can search for family-friendly places to swim outdoors on the Outdoor Swimming Society website. Note that not all the pools listed are free to use. Information taken from www.nhs.uk
