Competitions WIN A FAMILY TICKET TO KIDZANIA LONDON To celebrate the launch of its brand new Starlink Space Station activity, KidZania London – the indoor city run by kids at Westfield London, Shepherd’s Bush – is running a competition to give one lucky family four tickets to visit the attraction and play upcoming space adventure game Starlink ‘Battle for Atlas’, ahead of its official release in October! Launched in August this year, the Starlink Space Station created in partnership with Ubisoft aims to inspire kids to learn more about the solar system, by taking them on an exciting adventure through space. Interstellar Space Cadets will first be briefed on their mission and learn all about Atlas, the real triple star system with seven planets. Cadets will then learn how to customise and build their own modular Starship model of their dreams, before bringing it to life with Nintendo Switch and journeying through the Atlas Star System, Starlink Battle for Atlas. Testing and navigating their ship, kids will explore how each planet has it’s own ecosystem, wildlife and secrets to uncover. Along the way, they’ll encounter many challenges that they will have to act upon carefully, encouraging strong thinking and problem-solving skills. KidZania London offers 4-14-year olds real-life activities, spanning across 75,000 square feet. Blending learning with reality and entertainment, each career at KidZania is developed to teach kids essential life skills including financial literacy, teamwork and independence. Designed to empower and entertain kids, KidZania gives children the chance to challenge themselves and explore the world of opportunities. If your child has ever dreamt of becoming a pilot, a firefighter or the next award-winning actor, watch the excitement on their faces as they try out real life activities! WIN A GAMES PACKAGE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Make sure to be quick to get your entries in to be in with the chance to win a fantastic selection of board games that will be sure to keep the whole family entertained over the cosy autumn nights in! Included in the winners package will be one of the each of the following games. Mr & Mrs Family Edition Game is based on the hugely popular All Star Mr & Mrs hit ITV show hosted by Phillip Schofield, where players are challenged to answer in-depth and entertaining questions about their partner, friends or family members. It has over 1000 questions and is guaranteed to cause laughter, blushes, blank looks and a whole lot more! The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game allows families to enjoy a ‘day at the races’ from the comfort of their house when playing this devious family board game. Just as in a real race meeting, players race their horses around the board to win at all costs. Be devious, bet your own horse or someone else’s but don’t tell anyone who you’ve bet on. The object of the Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is to win the most money at the race meeting by getting your horse placed first, second or third in a race or by placing bets on winning horses. The Very Merry Christmas Game is the Family Game of Presents, Crackers, Christmas Songs… and Sprouts! Move around the board collecting presents (present cards) to put in your stocking. Presents have a value depending on whether they’re nice… or naff. Presents can also be given to other players – particularly the bad ones! You can take other players’ gifts off them and this is decided on the pull of a cracker. All players’ presents are placed face down in the stocking so nobody knows what they’ve got but there are opportunities to take a sneaky look to find out which ones to get rid of and which ones to keep. Land on the singing space and you have to sing a verse from a Christmas song or carol to avoid losing one of your gifts! The player with the best presents at the end of the game is the winner. All the joys of Christmas in this one box!

Supernanny Jo Frost’s Best Tips on Getting Your Children to Help Out More

We all need to get our errands done and the difference between having a good experience and not when kids are involved is exactly how much we get them involved. We all know what it’s like being home with the little ones and needing to get the laundry done, with your toddler all too

eager to prize you away to do something else. Follow the advice of Supernanny Jo Frost to help stay on top of this and make sure your kids are involved as much as they can be. It is equally important for your children to understand that they also have a responsibility to play a part in living together as a family. • First – Assess how you can get your children involved: • Look at the task at hand and work out how your children can help. Look for tasks which will be achievable for them and also make your life easier. For example, separating the socks from the vests, taking out the food from the shopping bags, tidying up the bath toys as getting out of the bath. • Be mindful to keep the chores short and sweet depending on the age of the child. For younger children: • For younger children, having them match up socks together is a great early educational game as well as allowing you to achieve your task of folding the laundry. It’s a win win! • The supermarket shop is a classic example of getting your children to know their food and simultaneously avoiding the public tantrums by keeping kids occupied. Have them cross off items on the shopping list as you go along and direct you to items that are still left to buy.

ADVICE For older children: • For older children, give them an actual task to complete, or a daily job which is solely their responsibility. • This can range from peeling vegetables, setting the table, actually putting the clothes away,or being your second pair of hands while you work on any other chores around the house. • Have them take part in family fly-bys before you go to bed: straighten out the sofa cushions, fold the blankies and make good for the next day. Tidy away remote control units and tidy newspapers and magazines, either placing them to one side for the recycling bin or stowing them in a stand or basket. Reward them! • Compliment the efforts of this teamwork and how it makes you feel. Expressing your gratitude is extremely rewarding for any child to hear how they have been of help to you. This also encourages the willingness to help again. • When the job is done feel free to reward your little ones. If they have a behaviour chart give them a star, or give them an incentive to work towards. You should always make a point to show them the positive end result – all hands lead to a job well done!

Finding a school to suit your child Before you choose which schools to apply to, find out as much as you can so that you can make an informed decision. Ask yourself what you and your child need from a school and start gathering information early. Getting information about schools Once you know which schools are near you, get as much information as you can about them. This will give you a better idea of which schools might suit your child most. For example, you might like to: • visit the schools • read the schools' prospectuses and study their admissions criteria • read the schools' most recent inspection reports • Inspection Reports (external link opens in a new window / tab) Guide for parents If you want your child to go to a certain school, you can read what is needed for them to be admitted to the school such as: • application process and deadlines • number of pupils at the school and how popular the school was in recent years • how places will be allocated if too many children apply - the admissions criteria You should also read the leaflet "The Transfer Process to post-primary school: Advice for Parents of Children in Primary Six". This explains the post-primary transfer process. Parents of children in Year 6 will receive the Advice for Parents leaflet in January. The Advice for Parents leaflet explains: • what you can do to help your child transfer to post-primary school • what things you can think about in choosing a school for your child • how to complete your child's application (the Transfer Form) to postprimary school Information about individual schools can change from year to year. You should make sure you get up-to-date information about your preferred schools. Parents can get information about admissions from the Transfer Officer in their region. Different types of schools Once you have found some local schools that might suit your child, draw up a shortlist. Before you apply, think about your child's personality and their needs. It's important to talk about where they would like to go. Starting a new school can be daunting. Having one or two close friends there can help your child adjust. Types of school • If your child needs special attention • If your child is very bright, shows particular patterns of behaviour or has special needs, it's important to find a school that will be able to give them the right support. • Supporting gifted and talented children • Special educational needs • If your child has specific interests • If they are keen on sport or a subject such as maths, languages, art or music, you may want to consider how the school can help to develop their interests. You should consider the range of extra-curricular activities available in schools and the cost of these activities. Extended services Some schools offer services outside normal school hours, such as breakfast clubs or after-school activities. Check school brochures for information about extended services. Visit the school If you think a school may suit your child, visit the school. Most schools have open days or evenings providing a good opportunity to see around, meet staff and have a look at children's work. You can get dates and times in local newspapers or from schools. While you are there ask yourself: • how welcoming the school feels and whether you are impressed by the children's work on display • if the school is well equipped - find out where pupils do sport and what IT facilities are available • how your child will get to school – think about safe routes, transport and the length of the journey • whether the school has a Parent Teacher Association - this may be able to give you more information School prospectuses Every post-primary school has a prospectus. This is a booklet that: • provides details about the school and the education opportunities it can provide

10 •Autumn 18 • www.kidaround.biz

for your child has information about the subject choices available at the school, public examination results, the numbers of applications received and the number of places granted in past years • Prospectuses are normally published on schools' websites and are also available free from schools. You should get prospectuses from all the schools you are considering by checking their websites or by contacting those schools directly. School Inspection Reports You might also like to read the latest individual school inspection reports which can be found on the Ofsted website. Home to school transport How to transport your child to school may be a reason for you choose certain schools. When choosing a school, make sure you understand the rules about home to school transport, as some children may be able to get help with travel costs. Your child will only be able to get transport support when they: • go to a school which is further than two miles from their home (three miles for post-primary schools) • were unsuccessful in getting a place at all schools of the same category within that two mile limit (three miles for post-primary schools) The category of school your child goes to also affects if your child will be able to get home to school transport support. The types of suitable schools are: • controlled or other voluntary • Catholic Maintained • integrated (including controlled integrated) • Irish-medium • denominational (Catholic) grammar (post-primary only) • non-denominational grammar (post-primary only) The grammar stream of a school recognised by the Department of Education as bi-lateral shall be treated as a grammar school and the secondary stream as a post primary (secondary) school when getting transport support. It may be helpful for you to talk to the EA about how the possible outcomes of your application to schools may affect whether your child can get help with home to school transport. The EA rules governing home to school transport support may change during your child's time at any particular school and this should be taken into consideration when choosing schools to list as preferences on the Transfer Form. Other information about a school When you're choosing a school for your child, you should also consider: • whether a school uses a system of streaming (placing children in classes based on their ability) and how this operates within the school • public examinations taken at schools - for example GCSEs and success levels • schools’ policies on homework, uniform, discipline • school fees if relevant, and other extra costs for example uniforms, sports equipment •

school support to pupils who can't keep up with their

class in specific subjects This information was taken from www.nidirect.gov.uk Admission Dates: Primary School: You can apply for a September 2019 primary (Reception) school place between 12 November 2018 and 15 January 2019. Offers of places will be sent on 16 April 2019.

Secondary: You can apply for a September 2019 Year 7 secondary school place between 12 September 2018 and 31 October 2018. Offers of places will be sent on 1 March 2019.

Have you been meaning to start a savings account? Here's some tips we have sourced to try and make you kick start that plan. How to give your child a financial head-start in life With the cost of living and tuition fees on the rise, today’s young adults are facing an increasingly difficult financial climate, Jamie Smith-Thompson from Portafina gives his tips on how you can save for your child’s future Preparing your child for adult life can have its challenges. With rising university tuition fees and the increasing cost of living, young adults have to deal with worries beyond their studies. But what if you could make things a little bit easier for your child and their future finances? Whether your child is thinking of broadening their education or taking work-based training, beginning preparations on their behalf for their future sooner rather than later could make a huge difference. Rising costs Tuition fees have been a cause of concern for students for a long time. First introduced in 1998 at £1,000 per year1, that figure has now increased to a massive £9,2502 in 2018. Alongside tuition fees, the cost of living in the UK has also been steadily increasing over the last 20 years. House prices have now risen to an average of £226,351 in the UK, an annual increase of 5.1%, leading student lettings to become unaffordable for many.3 On average, students are now expected to pay £566 a month4 for rent alone. Combine this with the increased cost of living, travel, and socialising, it’s no wonder some young people can be put off by further education altogether. Jamie Smith-Thompson, managing director of pension advice specialists, Portafina, provides ways you can prepare for your child’s future. He says, “A lot of young people’s concern is getting into debt if they attend university. Yet, it should be more than just about finances. It’s about the positive experience they will have, and there are things you can do to help ease the financial burden.” ISA ISAs are a tax-free way to save for your child’s future and can be opened on behalf of your child if they are under the age of 18. Any money you put into the ISA automatically becomes your child’s on their 18th birthday. Jamie comments; “Opening an ISA is a great way of saving for your child. Your money should grow more in an ISA than a regular bank account, yet it gives your child the option to access it if they need to. “Although some ISAs do have restrictions to prevent withdrawals for a set period of time, the good news is they come with the perks of tax-free interest and taxfree withdrawals. For the 2018/19 financial year, your child’s tax-free allowance is £4,260.” Student bank accounts Looking at how opening a student account for your child can be beneficial, Jamie says; “If your child chooses to go into further education, you can help them prepare for their time at university by setting up 18 •Autumn 18 • www.kidaround.biz

a student bank account or upgrade a current account into a student one. These types of accounts can offer several benefits that will help them save money when they really need to. Plus, they will be able to get their hands on discounts on food, shops and even days out! Some accounts come with travel cards to help students get to and from university and of course, the odd visit home, making travel cheaper and easier.” Pension Starting a pension for your child may sound unusual, but it’s actually one of the best ways to save for your child’s future, plus there are some great benefits to take advantage of. You can start a pension for your child as long as they are under the age of 18. The children’s pension also offers tax relief on contributions, which is essentially free money! The maximum contribution to a child’s pension with tax relief is £2,880 a year and the tax relief available is 20%. This means the government will top up a maximum contribution to £3,600 a year. 5 Plus, putting money into your child’s pension means they will benefit from the power of compound interest for as long as possible. This is the interest that is earnt from the interest of the money that you save. And to make the most of that power, it’s essential that you start saving as early as possible. You can find out more about compound interest here and tax reliefhere. In summary, Jamie added: “Even if you can only afford to contribute a small amount each month, as long as you do this regularly, it’s a great step in the right direction to giving your child a financial head start.” To read more about how to give your child a head start in life, head to https://www.portafina.co.uk/ blog/how-to-give-your-child-a-financial-head-startin-adult-life

Help to Save Scheme Get help with savings if you’re on a low income

How it works Help to Save is a type of savings account. It allows certain people entitled to Working Tax Credit or receiving Universal Credit to get a bonus of 50p for every £1 they save over 4 years. You get bonuses at the end of the second and fourth years. They’re based on how much you’ve saved. You can save up to £50 each calendar month. Help to Save is backed by the government so all savings in the scheme are secure. You can pay money into your Help to Save account by debit card, standing order or bank transfer. You do not have to pay money in every calendar month. You

can pay in as many times as you like, but the most you can pay in each calendar month is £50. You can only withdraw money from your Help to Save account to your bank account. After 4 years your Help to Save account will be closed. You will not be able to reopen it or open another Help to Save account. You’ll be able to keep the money from your account. You can close your account at any time. If you close your account early you’ll miss your next bonus and you will not be able to open another one. What you’ll get You can earn 2 tax-free bonuses over 4 years. You’ll get any bonuses you’ve earned even if you withdraw money. After your first 2 years, you’ll get a first bonus if you’ve been using your account to save. This bonus will be 50% of the highest balance you’ve saved. After 4 years, you’ll get a final bonus if you continue to save. This bonus will be 50% of savings you pay into your account above the highest balance you saved in the first 2 years. If your highest balance does not increase, you will not earn a final bonus. The most you can pay into your account each calendar month is £50, which is £2,400 over 4 years. The most you can earn from your savings in 4 years is £1,200 in bonus money. Your bonus is paid into your bank account, not your Help to Save account. ExampleYou pay in £25 every calendar month for 2 years. You do not withdraw any money. Your highest balance will be £600. Your first bonus is £300, which is 50% of £600. In years 3 and 4 you save an extra £200 to grow your highest balance from £600 to £800. Your final bonus is £100, which is 50% of £200. Even though you withdrew some money after your balance was £800, this doesn’t affect your bonus. What happens if you withdraw money If you withdraw money it will be harder for you to: • grow your highest balance • earn the largest possible bonuses Withdrawing money could mean you are not able to earn a final bonus - depending on how much you withdraw and when. Eligibility You can open a Help to Save account if you’re either: • entitled to Working Tax Credit and receiving Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit payments • claiming Universal Credit and your household income in your last monthly assessment period was £542.88 or more Payments from Universal Credit do not count as part of your household income. You also need to be living in the UK. If you live overseas, you can apply for an account if you’re either a: • Crown servant or their spouse or civil partner • member of the British armed forces or their spouse or civil partner For more information and to apply visit: https://www.gov.uk/get-help-savings-low-income
