Prof.dr. Thom Palstra Rector Magnificus By choosing one of the study programmes at the University of Twente, you have taken an important step. A step towards the direction of your professional future, a step towards your personal growth. Maybe you already have a clear view of what your professional future will look like. Often this idea ripens during the course of your education. Then you really discover whether you are a scientist, prefer working in industry, or working for the gaovernment. Maybe you’ll even start your own business during your studies. I can assure you that your future offers enough space for you to prepare for the future you want. Whichever study programme you have chosen, the University of Twente prepares you, thanks to the innovative way of educating for a labour market which is always moving.
But there are more changes when you start studying. Your student time is an important period in your life, during which you experience significant personal growth. Moving into a student house, making new friends, and finding activities and associations that fit you. Of course, your studies will take up your time as well, but the lesson

They have concocted an enervating programme for you in August, shortly before the actual lectures and seminars start. During this ‘Kick-In’ you will learn all the facets of the student life in Enschede. You will discover all the possibilities. Being the Rector, I think it’s important that you feel welcomed at our campus. The Kick-In helps with this: it is an, above all, fun period that you’ll not soon forget. Hello future (UT) student! The fact that you’re reading this means you have made an excellent choice: You are going to study at the University of Twente! Hopefully, you’re reading this while reviving yourself after exam, and not during a break before yet another pesky exam. In any case, you are ready for a completely new chapter of your life; your time as a student! The transition from High School to University is a significant one. Besides the fact that studying is no piece of cake, a lot will change in your life: you will make new friends, discover new hobbies, and maybe you will trade your parental home for a student house. One thing is for sure: your first year as a student at the UT will not be boring. We as the Kick-In Committee know this all too well; we have made this transition ourselves, not too long ago. To lend you a helping hand, we have put together this magazine, especially for you! Take your time browsing through it. It is full of stories of students who preceded you, useful tips, important information and fun items that you don’t want to miss before you leave for Enschede.
Your new life in Enschede will be launched with the Kick-In: the introductory nine (BSc) or five (MSc) days of the University of Twente. This unforgettable orientation period is the best way to start your student life. Countless friendships are formed during the activities of the Kick-In, so you won’t have to sit by yourself during your first lectures. Besides your fellow students, you will also be introduced to everything else that comes with living in Enschede, such as the city, the campus and the University facilities. From sport associations to acting associations and student associations: during the Kick-In you will get to know them all! This year, the Bachelor Kick-In takes place from the 21st until the 29th of August. The Master Kick-In takes place from the 25th until the 29th of August. So mark these days in your calendar! We believe that it’s important to do more than just study; it is important to submerge yourself in the student life! What makes the University of Twente so unique, is that almost every student is active at a sport, study, culture, or student association. In Enschede, these associations are managed by and for students.
How does the Student Union work?
Examples
Every year, six students form the board of the Student Union. We occupy ourselves for others in a number of ways. For example, we organize the sports- and culture facilities, events like the Kick-In, and we stimulate the student entrepreneurship as well as have meetings with the Executive Board of the University. The Student Union can be seen as an umbrella for all student organizations in Enschede, as it is a bridge between organizations and the Executive Board. In some fields we decide the policies, and in others we commute with the University from an early stage. This position is ideal for us, it helps us represent the interests of our students and organizations.

With the UnionCard, we grant students the possibility to make use of all sports- and culture facilities. The Student Union owns several student buildings and locations, such as the Bastille, the water sport complex, the study space Wallstreet and the Pakkerij. You can buy study material, university clothing and gift articles in our UnionShop. We reward student activism with Skills Certificates and the ‘More than a Degree Awards’, and we support activism by way of the board improvement programme. Together with Novel-T we stimulate student entrepreneurship and the starting of companies. We frequently consult with our university staff members to stand up for the interests of students.

What do we do, exactly? Being the Student Union, we have a wide scope of tasks. In these, the Student Union plays, of course, the most important role, but besides that we have multiple committees that support us in providing students with everything they need! Below you can find some examples of what the Student Union does, and what the committees do.
Committees
Kick-In Every year, we support the six-headed Kick-In Committee that gives their everything to organize a fantastic introduction for all Bachelor and Master students! The Kick-In committee is a very independent fulltime committee, and a part of the Student Union.
Connecting hands This committee is responsible for the organization of activities connecting Dutch students to refugees. In this way, refugees are introduced to the Dutch culture in a fun way. WorldRide The WorldRide committee organizes activities in the international branch. These activities are often held in the Global Lounge (in the Bastille), and are organized especially for international students and other interested students.
Student Union afternoon sessions committee This committee organizes trainings and workshops for student, with the goal to help them better themselves. During these events, professional trainers are hired to help you reach personal and professional growth! Create Tomorrow Every year, the biggest student think tank in the world is held in Enschede! The Create Tomorrow committee is responsible for the organization of this event.
Buddy The Buddy committee organizes activities for international students, where they are paired with national students: buddies!
TEDxTwenteU You have probably heard of TED-talks before. Every year, this committee organizes a TEDx-conference in Enschede.
UT-Model United Nations Also called the UT MUN, this committee organizes the Model United Nations at the UT, a simulation of the United Nations by and for students.
Why should you be active as well? First of all, it’s incredibly fun! When you first become active, you’ll notice that you’ll acquire a lot of social and organizational skills. Furthermore, you will learn to deal with responsibilities, find creative solutions to problems, and greatly widen your network of people. It is a real investment in yourself, which will certainly pay out during your study and your future career. Lastly, activism really impresses future employers: they may look at your diploma, but what distinguishes you from other graduated students who have the same diploma? Are you a bit more capable, because you were in a committee or board, for example? Then you have one-upped your competition!

What is the Kick-In? T
he Kick-In is the official introduction period of the University of Twente. Every year, this introduction takes place a week before classes start, so all new students are well prepared for their study and their student lives. During the Kick-In, important activities take place, organized by different studies, so you can really get to know your study and learn what you need to before your classes start. Additionally, you will get to know other students from your study, your new learning environment, and everything this University has to offer you.
The Kick-In 2019 consists of nine days full of activities to show you everything there is to know about the Student life in Enschede. We will take you to the myriad of associations this University has to offer. Not only will we show you around campus, we will show you around the city of Enschede too. During this Kick-In many new things will come your way. You will meet a lot of new people, and see everything from sports associations, to study associations, to culture associations and a whole lot more! Of course, you don’t have to do any of this by yourself. You will spend the Kick-In with your Do-Group and you will be guided by two or more Do-Parents. What a Do-Group entails exactly, you can find on page 20.
Why should I sign up for the Kick-In? People have probably told you: “Your student time is the best time of your life.”. They don’t say it for nothing; your student time is full of new opportunities, friendships and experiences. The Kick-In is designed to show you what all of this entails. During these five or nine days you will be expertly prepared for you new student life in Enschede. This will be achieved by means of fun activities, a relaxed atmosphere and of course, fantastic parties. After the Kick-In you will be a well-prepared participant of the student life in Enschede. General Kick-In The days of the general part of the Kick-In will be filled with fun activities in the fields of sports, culture and student associations. These associations will be introduced to you at length, and they will organise different activities for you. You can, for example, try out new sports or enjoy workshops and shows at the cultural associations, there will be a sport barbeque and a big party in the Pakkerij, the building of the student associations. Many volunteers – namely, the Do-Group Parents, crewmembers and members of the associations – work hard to organise this exceptional Kick-In!

Faculty days During the Bachelor Kick-In, there will be days with activities specific to your study. These days are called the ‘Faculty Days’ (in Dutch: opleidingsdagen). The part of the Kick-In that you experience with all of the new students is called the ‘General Kick-In’. During the Education Days you will meet fellow students of your study and the study association belonging to your study. Depending on your study association these days will take place at the university campus or at a studycamp. In any case: you will experience all there is to experience and have a great time with your fellow students and study association.

For almost all students, the Kick-In is the start of a new stage of their life. Because of this, the Kick-In can be exciting and overwhelming. Do you think you are ready for a new city, new friends, and a new study?
his is exactly why we chose the theme ‘Colour it Up’ During the Kick-In you will be given handles to find your own way of living your studentlife. Being the Kick-In committee, we want to give you the pencils and the knowledge necessary to colour up your student life in Enschede.

Every year, the Kick-In has a theme. This has happened even back when this introductory period was called “Introduction period Technical Academy Twente”. In the 80s they used themes like ‘Choose’, ‘Direction’, and (believe it or not) ‘Goose’. Since what seems like forever, the tradition is that this introduction is organised by students. Every year, the committee in question chooses a catchy theme. This theme not only makes clear to the new students what the committee is trying to achieve during the introduction, but it also gives a personal touch to every introduction. Because of this, every introduction has its own unique identity and atmosphere.

Blank Canvas On Wednesday the 21st of August, the Kick-In starts! After you’ve been registered, you can get to know all of the associations that belong to the University at the opening market. In the afternoon the Kick-In will be officially opened in the tent, and afterwards you can choose your Do-Group at your study (for more information see page 14), and with the people in your group you’ll have dinner and take part in the city tour to party on in the centre of Enschede.

Active Mind Put on your sports clothes: Thursday you’ll get to know all sportsassociations durint the Sports Games. Besides sport, you can party as well: in the evening the swimming association hosts a pool party, a foamparty and you’ll be able to sing to your heart’s content during the Party. Gather Your Colours It’s showtime! On Friday you will get to know all culture associations at the Apollo Festival. During the lunch and dinner the associations will put up several shows. During these meals is the Apollo festival as well: a festival filled with performances and workshops. Feel like something more active? Your Kick-In experience is not complete without joining the Storming of the Bastille. During the evening you can join the Cantus or get to know Hengelo, where the day will be concluded with a gigantic party. Disco lights Be introduced to all the conviviality associations on Sunday. During this day several activities have been organised by the student associations of Enschede. In the evening you are of course invited to party in their pubs in the Pakkerij.
Take Your Time On Sunday it’s time to relax a little bit. During the day there are a number of free acitivities (like playing pool, bowling, swimming, etc.) that you can join. Beside these free activities a lounge and a church service are organised for anyone whose interested. In the evening you can watch a movie at the open air theatre.
Faculty days Ignite your fire again during the education days. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday you will meet your fellow students and you will hear everything about your studies and everything involved.
Picture Perfect On Wednesday afternoon, when you come back from the education days, you’ll go into the city where you go into one of the many restaurants in Enschede to enjoy the dish of the day. After that, there will be a big concert at the Oude Markt in Enschede, where famous artists will start an exciting party! Masterpiece On the last day of the Kick-In, the Kick-Out festival will be held. Here you can get some rest after the last eight days, visit one of the student associations again, go nuts at one of the music stages, or go get a bite at one of the food trucks. In the evening it’s time for the booming end party, after which you will be completely ready for your student days in Enschede!

Day 2 - Blue Monday This day is a bit different for international and Dutch students. In the morning, international students are given a timeslot during which they can visit the Facility Market. At the Facility Market they will be able to arrange formalities for their stay in the Netherlands. Multiple kinds of parties will be present at this market, to provide the students with all the information they need. Dutch students can tag along after the lunch for the Campus Experience! Day 1 - Take Your Time The first day of the Kick-In focuses on introductions. This is the day you will meet the participants that are in you mentor group with whom you’ll take part in the rest of the Kick-In. Central registration When the students arrive on the campus they will be registered and assigned to a mentor group. Afterwards, they will be ready to participate in the Kick-In.
Get together During the Get-together the students will come to the table corresponding with their mentor group (e.g. EWI-6) in ‘De Roomspot’ tent. The mentors are waiting at the table. You can play a game and have a drink to get to know your master students. Grand Opening The Grand opening takes place in ‘De Veste’ tent with all the participants and mentors. A spectacular show will ensure a fantastic start of the Kick-In!
Culture Class During the Culture Class, a speaker will introduce the participants to Dutch culture and the international environment at the University of Twente. Dinner After the first few activities, you must be hungry! You can all enjoy a welcome meal together.
Karaoke party The Vestingbar will organize a karaoke party in the Bastille. Make sure your team has the most correct answers and win!
Kick-In
Formality Market Various organizations will be present at the Formality market to help the students handle all kinds of administrative matters. The checklist will guide the students in organizing all those things. The Formality market is strongly advised for all international students. Make sure they go there! Lunch In order to silent your hungry stomachs, we have prepared a nice lunch for you. Enjoy a meal with your mentor group.
Campus Experience The students can participate in various activities organized by the sports and culture associations of the University of Twente. During these activities, students can discover which associations are connected to the University of Twente and what they have to offer. The students are free to participate in any activity they want. There is no schedule for the Campus experience. You can go to the checkpoint to receive a map of the Campus experience. Think Tank During this activity, you will participate in a big brainstorming activity, about two relevant cases. Prizes to win, so be there!
Food Fair There are a lot of different nationalities at the university. Every culture has their own food and traditions. Find out what other cultures eat and taste the different kinds of meals. The international associations will also be present! You can use your ticket to collect several small dishes. Master Singalong Cantus A cantus is a typical student activity that is all about beer (or soda), singing and eloquence. In this evening you will get to know the ‘rules’ of the studentlife (of Enschede) while singing and drinking, so make sure you will be there. A ticket is mandatory for this activity, but it’s worth it!

Kick-In Day 3 - Picture Perfect Today is the Faculty programme. Most of the day, the students will do activities with their own faculty. Each faculty will offer its own programme. In the evening, everyone will get back together to join the ESN Crazy city Tour. Faculty Day Each faculty has a completely different programme with a different duration. Students will receive the necessary information from their faculty and will be able to see their personal programme when they log on to the Kick-In website or app.
ESN Crazy City Tour Get to know the city of Enschede while doing a crazy scavenger hunt! ESN provides the students with more than enough assignments to keep them busy all evening. Concert It is time to enjoy a massive concert at the Oude Markt, at the heart of Enschede’s city center! The awesome performances wil start at 19:30. The line-up is still a secret, but we are sure you are going to have the time of your lives! The concert is a joint effort of the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences Enschede, Vereniging Horeca Stad Enschede and the municipality of Enschede in cooperation with Enschede Promotie.
Day 5 - Masterpiece Time flies when you’re having fun! Even the Kick-In must come to an end, but not without an awesome final day! This day, the Master Kick-In and the Bachelor Kick-In follow the same programme. Active Student Lunch Enjoy a wonderful lunch and be inspired by everything the University has to offer for broadening your horizons during your student life! During this lunch you can get to know more about being active at the University of Twente. Kick-Out Lounge & Festival The Kick-Out Festival will once more show you everything the student life can offer you. A mix of music, sports, games and lounging will keep you occupied for the entire afternoon!
Studium Generale Students of Green Team Twente will give an interactive show of their self-made car. Fuel: hydrogen! They were one of the university teams, competing during the international Shell Eco Marathon this summer. Students of UT/Saxion will tell about this huge project and show a lot of videos. Idea, ambition, technical challenge, teambuilding, financing. Of course you can admire the car and ask questions. This meeting is organized by Studium Generale. Puzzle Hunt Rack your brain at Pandora’s Puzzle Hunt!
Food Truck Festival During the Foodtruck Festival, you can get all kinds of food to enjoy with your mentor group! The Food Trucks are located at the Kick-Out Festival.
Closing Show During this show, the winners of the lottery will be announced. Afterwards a spectacular show will take place! Grolsch Final Party Let’s celebrate a fantastic Kick-In with an extraordinary Kick-Out party!

What are Do-Groups and Mentor Groups?

BSc Do-Groups Your Kick-In will start on August 21st, 2019. Approximately 2,000 prospective students from all over the world come to Twente to mark the beginning of their student life. You’ll enter a new environment where you’ll (probably) hardly know anyone. This is of course quite exciting, but you are certainly not alone. On the first day of the Kick-In you learn to get acquainted with your own do-group, we will explain how it all works. Do-Group Market At the opening market of the Kick-In you will, together with all the first-year students of all studies, get acquainted with the rich association-life of the University of Twente. After an afternoon full of new impressions, all new students from the same studies come together. A separate Do-Group Market is held for each study. During this Do-Group Market you will get an overview of all possible Do-Groups to read through. After that, all Do-Groups present themselves by way of a short video and a chat. This way you can determine which Do-Group will suit you best. After all the Do-Groups have been discussed, you can make choose the Do-Group that seems most fitting to you and the way you want to experience your Kick-In. From that moment on, you will go through the Kick-In together with your Do-Group and get that party started!
MSc Mentor Groups Your Kick-In will start on August 25th, 2019. Hundreds of students from all over the world come to Twente to mark the beginning of their student life. You’ll enter a new environment where you’ll (probably) hardly know anyone. This is of course quite exciting, but you are certainly not alone. On the first day of the Kick-In you learn to get acquainted with your own do-group, we will explain how it all works. Mentor group You will not take part in the Kick-In by yourself. Together with your mentor and fellow students you will enjoy the Kick-In and visit all kinds of activities. The mentors are students of the University of Twente as well, so they know their way around campus. Feel free to ask them anything, they are here to guide you during the Kick-In!
Do-Group Parents The Do-Groups will be guided by two official Do-Group Parents: experienced, expert students who have already experienced the Kick-In and who already know the intricacies of being student. Often there are a lot of extra Do-Group Parents who join the fun of the introduction. A Do-Group can be organized by a student association. This can be a sports, culture or a conviviality association. There will also be independent Do-Groups that are not linked to an association. These are led by groups of friends or independent. Your Do-Group Parents will gladly introduce you to this unforgettable period!

• Get a bike Either order a bike on the Opening Fair (bachelor students) or on the Formality Market (master students). Alternatively, you can buy a bike in any of the many bicycle shops in Enschede. Second hand bikes are usually well up to spec, so no need to splurge on a brand new and expensive one. • Cash Get some cash to use to pay for initial expenses during the Kick-In
• Sun screen Although our summers are not very extreme, being out in the sun for 5-9 days can leave its mark on people with a fairer complexion. Be sure to pack enough sun screen if you think you need it! •

From Lahore to Enschede Hello and welcome to the University of Twente! I am Hamza, an international student here. A short time ago, I was in your footsteps; scrolling through the Kick-In magazine to find informative but interesting articles. This article showcases the transition from Lahore to Enschede for me and has all the important information you need presented in a very fun way. Food As someone coming from Lahore, the food capital of Pakistan, one of the hardest things to get used to is the Dutch cuisine. For the Dutch, preparing lunch is only a question of what type of cheese they want to put in what type of bread. Thankfully, all supermarkets provide a plethora of ingredients and sauces to help you recreate dishes of your homeland. A piece of advice would be to take your time quickly to learn how to cook some of your favorite dishes, and you’ll quickly feel at ease and connect to other internationals and Dutch students by sharing some of it. Personally, I hosted an ‘Iftar’ dinner and invited my international friends to taste traditional Pakistani food and the smiles on their faces is an honest representation of how much fun we had that evening. Weather The summers in the Netherlands are the best season I have ever been exposed to; enjoy the beautiful sunshine as you walk out of the big open swimming pool on campus or when you decide to have a picnic with your friends in the lush green fields. The winters, however, are a bit extreme (at least for someone coming from Pakistan) as the temperature drops to subfreezing temperature but the buildings and houses are warm and cozy. Make sure you have a warm jacket, gloves and a muffler at all times in the winter (don’t let the morning sunshine trick you into believing it will be a warm day).
Interaction with Dutch students Dutch students are genuinely very kind, honest and helpful and form one of the most beautiful communities I have ever interacted with. Culture Cycling is the most significant cultural activity and astonishingly the first time I ever rode a bike was in the Netherlands. Thankfully, I was helped to find my way on the bicycle and I quickly got used to this wonderful tradition. Apart from that, everyone dresses up in orange on King’s day and as funny looking creatures at the Carnaval. The best thing about this university is that you get to experience cultures and traditions from all over the world. Soon, you will see yourself emerged in colours on Holi, learn Bollywood and Salsa dance through free workshops and taste food from all over the world on the food fairs! More about the Netherlands In the Netherlands, almost everyone can speak English fluently so you would never feel the need to learn Dutch and you’ll feel right at home from day one. The Netherlands is known for having the world’s most beautiful landscapes so be sure to indulge in the Tulips fields in Keukenhof and enjoy the boat rides in Giethoorn (Venice of Netherlands).
Internationalization University of Twente is probably the best university for international students because you are made to feel at home by everyone around, you meet new people, experience different cultures and although you may miss your family, you may as well find a new one.

Beginning student life, through the eyes of Patyt Reyes @ blackholeness
I remember the week before I left home. My room was a complete mess. I had been picking my favorite clothes and putting them on top of my bed along with pictures, letters, and drawings that friends had made for me. I even added a couple of objects I knew I wouldn’t need but that still had a meaning for me. (Two years later, I still look at that Oscar-like plastic trophy that says “Best friend” wondering what the hell was I thinking, carrying that absurd thing all the way across the Atlantic ocean). But I just had to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I wasn’t going on a small trip; I was moving out. As I started packing everything strategically to make the most out of the space in my bags, I suddenly realized what a mess I was! A mixture of nervousness and excitement was flooding me. I had so many questions. Was I smart enough for that University? Would I be capable of making good friends? How much time would it take for me to get homesick and burst out crying in my rented room? How nice are Dutch people anyway?
I figured there was no way to know all these things until I got to The Netherlands and lived the actual experience. I couldn’t back down then. I had dragged myself to the brink of an unknown abyss to discover what intriguing and scary adventures could be found there, it was time to make that jump. The trip was exhausting, all my thoughts and emotions were combined with many hours of poor sleep and no decent meals. Amidst the jet lag craze, half-asleep, and totally confused by the immensity of the Campus, I arrived at the Kick-In meeting point. Then it hit me: I had made it to the abyss. And it wasn’t that scary.
There was a lively buzz of thousands of incoming students who were lining up and gathering in groups. Everywhere around me people were introducing themselves, shaking hands with a smile, exchanging details about their background. I got the sense that they were all just as nervous and excited (perhaps even as jet lagged) as I was. But we were on the same boat together, and it was going to be fun.
What happened next? Well… you’ll discover it for yourself. The Kick-In, the classes, your roommates, the city of Enschede. Everybody gets to live the adventure in their own way. There will surely be nights spent studying, or frustration when projects are more challenging than you would expect. But there will also be feelings of great accomplishment, learning incredible stuff about your field of study, and about people and cultures around the world. You cannot predict what will happen, and that may be a bit unsettling for now. But if I’m allowed to give a word of advice is you gotta take it all as it comes. Enjoy the things you can, and endure the things you must. And no matter how easy or hard, rest assured that you’ll collect a myriad of good stories.

Theory & practice An important aspect of the Twente Education Model (TOM) is the interwovenness of theory and practice, of acquiring knowledge and applying it. In addition to attending lectures on your field, you will be working on projects yourself. You learn and practice how to systematically solve problems. Collaborate, investigate, process new information quickly and apply this knowledge broadly; this approach in combination with the structure of the study promotes your chance of success. It also requires something from you: an active attitude and involvement. You will have to show these traits from day one.
This is what a bachelor programme looks like All bachelor programmes at the University of Twente are based on the Twente Education Model (also known as TOM, as in Dutch it is called the Twents OnderwijsModel). This looks more or less like this: • • • • •
Each bachelor programme is divided into 12 modules of 15 credits (ECs). Each module consists of 10 weeks During each module, a theme will be discussed. Each module consists of various activities (module components) such as tutorials, group assignments, guest lectures, practicals or group discussions. During some of these projects you work together with students from other study programmes.
First the basis, then elective space In the first six to eight modules of your study programme, you will learn a subject-specific basis. After this, there’s room to make choices. These choices can include: following a module with students from other study programmes or studying abroad for a period of time. Modules 11 and 12 form the graduation period. During your student days you will undoubtedly have questions about your study and everything that comes with it. The study advisor of your study is always ready to help you! This is an interview with Brigitte Tel, the study advisor of Applied Physics. What is your background, and why did you choose to become a study advisor? I studied Applied Physics at the University of Twente myself. During my study I discovered that my main interest was teaching, so I chose to follow the first grade teacher education. My first job after graduation was at a high school. There I could express my interest in teaching and supervising. Then, because they already knew me from my student assistantships, I was asked for the position of teacher for the Applied Physics practicals at the University of Twente. Later I ended up as a combination of teacher and study advisor, which I have been doing for 17 years now. This means that if you are going to study Applied Physics, you will see me both at study advisor meetings and at practicals. What can a study advisor help you with? You can go to your study advisor for everything that is not standard. This is of course the basis for compiling customized study programs and schedules. Furthermore, we can also help you if for some reason you have trouble studying. For example, we can offer help with learning problems, we can help

you plan your time more efficiently, and we offer assistance with illnesses and special circumstances. And of course you can contact us if everything is going well and you want to do things besides your study.
How do you feel about your job? I think my job is the most beautiful job in the world. Most of all, I really like to be in direct contact with the students. These students are people who are in the middle of their verbal development, are very creative and want to do combine fun activities with their study. Everything is still possible. And to help someone make the most of their lives, that is the most beautiful; it is like coaching someone who practices top-class sport.
In your opinion, what is so special about being a study advisor? It is exceptional to talk to people who are still developing themselves and have not found themselves yet. It is hard to imagine how much happens to someone when they study here. The difference between when people start here and when they leave is huge. It is wonderful to see how diverse the palette is, of what people will do after their study.
What do you want the future students to know? Keep changing. Don’t look back, just count your losses and keep going. This applies to everything during your study, including perhaps your study choice! Use the first year to see if your study and environment fits you. It may well be that you discover you didn’t make the right choice after all. After all the information and open days it seems almost not-done to change course, but it is very academic to make a new choice in study if necessary. The most important thing is that you end up where you belong.

For the most divers questions or problems that you encounter during your study, you can go to several people for help, to whom you can go for information, advice and support.

T
he study advisor knows everything about the educational programme and is the first point of contact within the programme. The study advisor guides you through you study career, provides advice and guidance on how to study, how to plan for your study, how to choose subjects and monitors your study progress as well. And if you
have personal problems, or special circumstances that impair your ability to study, the study advisor is the person to talk to. There is also an option if you want to talk to someone outside of your educational programme. At Student Affairs Coaching & Counselling, the student counsellors help you brainstorm for a solution and advice you on all your questions and problems.
Student counsellors from Student Affairs Coaching & Counselling The student counsellor (studentendecaan in Dutch) has various informative, advisory, mediating and supporting tasks and you can contact him for questions that transcend generals study questions. For example, you can ask him about aspects that impair your study progress, such as personal or special circumstances. You can ask him questions about laws and regulations, supportive schemes and facilities, as well as finances, top sport, education adjustments, confidential issues and procedures concerning the BSA (Binding Study Advice).
If you have questions about your study choice or study career, you can go to the career counsellor for advice, individual guidance, and coaching, where your career trajectory and personal profile are the points of focus.
For personal questions, you can also go to the student psychologist, as well as for all study-related problems you may encounter during your study. Examples of problems are performance anxiety, study stress, procrastination, lack of discipline or motivation. The student psychologist also offers guidance on personal problesm that impede your functioning during your study and student life, for example, having difficulty making contact with other students, insecurity, worry or gloom. If you have questions regarding studying with a disability, the diversity coordinator is your point of contact. She informs and advises you about possible facilities and practical aids and coordinates the necessary extra facilities.

Osiris is the system you use to enrol before starting a new quartile. Enrolling for a module is important for your grade administration, without enrolling you cannot take exams. As soon as your exam has been graded, the grade will show up in Osiris.
Canvas is used at the University for subject-specific information. Information about the course, assignments and documents are posted on Canvas. Each module and every course has its own Canvas page. As soon as you are registered in Osiris, you get access to the right Canvas pages.
The timetable for every module is digitally available. At first the calendar is empty; you can fill it in by adding your own courses and modules. You can also look at your timetable at the website, Outlook, Google Calender and on your smartphone.

SNT Helpdesk
Students Services can help you with things like enrolment for a study, module or course. You can also request things like prove of enrolment and an official list of grades. Moreover, you can also come to Student Services with questions about the use of Studielink, the payment for your tuition and appliance for student loans. The counter of Student Services is located in the Vrijhof building.
Besides Osiris, Canvas and the timetables, the University has a lot more websites and systems. For this, there is a central place with an overview, the My Utwente portal. This sites has widgets, shortcuts and news items, so you have all the information you need in one place.
The SNT Helpdesk is run by students. The helpdesk is there for all issues concerning internet, e-mail and VPN. SNT is an association that runs the helpdesk and busies itself with all things IT as well, such as owning their own cloudplatform for associations. All helpdesks and servicedesks for IT related problems (ICT, NSC and SNT) are located in the Citadel building.

During your studies you’ll probably need a laptop. Every year, the University has a number of laptop models for cheap prices. These laptops are up for sale via the following website: www.utwente.nl/icts. nsc. The NSC also has a helpdesk where you can go with problems with UT-notebooks and the software they offer.

everal organisations within the University are fully equipped to help you with international orientation, contact with international students as well as internships and travels. Whether you are a Dutch student and would like to gain experience abroad, or are a foreign student and come to study in the Netherlands, these organizations ensure that you end up in the right place!
Student Services Student Services helps new students, both Dutch and international, with questions regarding registration, admission, visa, accommodation and tuition fees. The Student Servicedesk can be found on the first floor of the Vrijhof building. The Student Servicedesk is open on weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. International Student Handbook The International Student Handbook is filled with useful information for students who are attending the University of Twente, including ITC students. Formality Market Attendance to the Facility Market on Monday 26 August is highly recommended for international students. During this day, you will be given the opportunity to ask questions to the Student Services officer, Visa officer, and AON insurance officer. Besides this, you will get to know the various facilities the University has to offer (for instance the student library, student counselling, the general practitioner, ESN, and ICT/Notebook Service Centre). You will also get to ask questions to the available faculty contact person, to attend a presentation of a Dutch police officer about rules and safety, and an opportunity to buy a bicycle. Please take this day into account when preparing your trip to the Netherlands. Study abroad Thanks to a network of more than 300 partners worldwide, UT students can choose to follow a study or internship abroad as part of their studies at the University of Twente. An experience that is not only of added academic value, but also creates an unforgettable personal experience. Every year we organize a big event for students who want to orient themselves on studying abroad: Let’s GO! During the fair day, partner universities present themselves and students can gather information.
