INTRODUCTION

Introduction Definitions

Base Concepts

Jeddah as a Knowledge City

As cities of the past were built along railroads, waterways and interstate highways, “Cities of the 21st century will be built along information highways; broadband communications links, playing together with the digital age smart and sustainable communities a central role in the rebirth of civilization in the 21st century” (Eger, 2001).

Motivation

Formation of Knowledge Cities Open Studio Activities of Knowledge Cities Open Studio

The spread of computation and ‘Information and communication technologies’ (ICTs) affected the methods of communication; and therefore affecting the life patterns of people, reshaping the built environment, and radically changing the profile of the city.

Jeddah was first inhabited about 2,500 years ago as a small fishing settlement and has long been a centre for traders. The city was already an established port with a history of spice trading when Caliph Osman Ibn affan declared it the official port for Muslim pilgrims making their way to the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah in 26 (647). This marked a turning point in Jeddah’s future, not only because of the increased possibilities for commerce but also because the arrival of pilgrims from all over the world. Dr. Khaled Ali Youssef

Jeddah as a Knowledge City

Education Perspective

The KCs Open Studio can be considered a ‘brain storming’ studio where KCs definitions, base concepts and case studies were presented, visions, ideas and drafts were sketched and arguments were worked out.

Motivation

Formation of Knowledge Cities Open Studio Activities of Knowledge Cities Open Studio

Students’ Work Vision 1

Vision 2

Conclusions and Remarks

Despite the fact that the visions are proposed by students and revised by instructors of 3 specializations, the experiment seems to open the door for professional investigations by professional entities of more specializations. In this studio students were given the chance to ‘think globally and act locally’; achieving the URP/AR/LA skills they are intended to achieve adopting the concept of ‘design by subject’.
