KEY BEAUTY Hair Extensions – What they can do for you Tracy at Hair Magic has been doing hair extensions for the last 25 years and has every type on the market at VERY reasonable prices. The best way for me to tell you what they can do for you is to answer frequently asked questions.

By Tracy, Hair Magic

Q My hair is really fine – can I use extensions to thicken my hair? A We do more extensions to thicken hair than we do to lengthen it and it’s very cheap as we charge per extension. For thickness you need 20 to 35 extensions at a cost of between 3 to 4.50 Euros depending on the length and quality of hair you choose. Q Will they damage my hair? A There are many bad things said about hair extensions. If they are put in properly with correct tension, they will absolutely not damage your hair. Q How long do they last? A We fully guarantee our hair extension for the first 8 weeks but they can last for five months. Q How do I look after them? A You treat them as if they are your own hair. You can’t leave them wrapped in a towel and you can’t go to bed with them wet or tie them up when wet, as they can tangle. You can even colour your hair with them in as they are real hair. You can use straightening irons, tongs, hair dryer, all as you would with your own hair. Q I would love long hair – how many extensions do I need and how much will it cost? A In order to have long hair you need between 70 and 120 extensions. It all depends on how thick your own hair is and if it is fine, you won’t need as many. If your own hair is thick, we have to match the extensions to your own. If not, you will see a line between your hair and the extension and this looks terrible! We also normally use 2 to 4 different colours to get an exact match to your own hair. For more information on Hair Extensions or to book your free consultation, call Hair Magic on 952 931 777/673 998 787 or see our website www.hairmagicspain.com.

KEY FEATURE De-cluttering in the Heat The Costa del Sol is basking in sunshine with its summer temperatures this year making working a challenge. It’s so much easier to down tools and head for the beach, or your pool, or find shade from the nearest tree. Before you give in to the heat, have a think about achieving, or creating something new over the summer. Over the summer Costa Women have arranged an #ActionAugust campaign to create, make, or do something new for our businesses and lives in Spain. Some of the members are de-cluttering in an attempt to cut down on their “stuff”. De-cluttering can be cathartic as we remove piles of items that we haven’t worn in the last year, which no longer fit our lifestyle, or our body, or we no longer want, or need. The slow cooker, or juicer that was a good idea at the time, may now be just the thing someone else is looking for. There are many groups on Facebook where you could sell your items, or 100s of worthy charities, which would gladly take your items to earn some money for their needy cause. Get together with your friends and enjoy a fun hour or two trying, swapping books, clothes, or jewellery and taking

By Ali Meehan, Founder of costawomen.com home some “new” bounty. De-cluttering might be necessary in your work environment too. If you are finding that it takes more than a few minutes searching, it might be time to create some folders in your email, or on your computer and move your files into the appropriate location. Just a word of warning… putting lots of items on the desktop can slow your computer down. Once you have cleared your space, also think about updating your marketing material. Ask a friend, or business contact to do a review of your flyers, business cards, or website and return the favour. What you may see when looking at your marketing material, can take on a completely different meaning when looked at by someone from a different culture, or speaking a different language. Updating your website, checking all the page links go where they should, rewriting your bio, updating your photo etc. all take time, but once done, form a good foundation to take you from August and onwards. A few hours spent now, could be well worth the time and effort. Enjoy your Summer!

KEY HEALTH Kick Your Sugar Habit Sugar is one of the most important nutrients in our diet; it’s an essential substance that we need to survive. However, in recent times, over-consumption has become a real issue and one that we need to tackle head on. The problem is not just about sugar we stir into our morning coffee, but the sweetened additives hidden inside processed foods – sliced ham, pizza toppings, pork pies, fruit yoghurt, smoothies, cereal and tomato sauce – that we eat every day. High blood sugar can be caused by a number of factors: • Frequent sugar cravings or hunger pangs • Snacking between meals • Excess consumption of junk food and processed foods • Regular dieting • Weight gain Cut Your Cravings and Kick out Sugar! What is Chromium? Chromium is a mineral found in natural foods, but it is in short supply in the modern British diet. Chromium works in harmony with insulin, to maintain healthy circulating levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Chromium helps to avoid the “highs and lows” of hunger patterns which can often lead to cravings and snacking between meals. Bio-Chromium® contains an organic form of chromium called ChromoPrecise®. This key compound channels sugar safely out of your bloodstream. Here’s how: The key to ChromoPrecise® is the way in which chromium is embedded in a yeast structure that provides it with unique properties. Chromium is combined with several amino acids to form a natural molecule called Chromodulin that helps channel sugar into the body’s cells. Chromodulin supports insulin by “unlocking” cells from the inside, allowing the sugar (glucose) to enter the cell with ease. This stops blood sugar from damaging the body and prevents insulin resistance, which is a marker for disease. Babi’s Tips to Kick your Sugar Habit 1. Eat Regularly – three balanced meals help prevent your blood sugar levels dropping dramatically. The more hungry you feel, the more you will stray towards sugary snacks. 2. Don’t Start the Day with Sugar – Breakfasts containing high starch and added sugar will only lead to cravings later in the day. Eggs, fats and whole grains (whole oats, wheat) can help you feel fuller for longer, with slow-release energy. 3. Fruit, not Fruit Juice – Smoothies and juices shred or remove the fibre completely, which exposes us to high levels of fructose, which raises blood sugar. Stick to water. 4. Get Physical and Keep Busy – Exercise improves your insulin sensitivity, which helps with blood sugar levels. Filling your day with distractions, even a simple stroll, is good. 5.Take Chromium – Bio-Chromium® is proven to main normal blood sugar levels therefore reducing cravings for

By Anni’s Vital Shop sweets, snacks and junk food. It also helps to convert fat, carbs and protein into energy making it an ideal choice for slimmers. Babi Chana Bsc Nut Med – Nutritionsit, Bio-chemist and Health Writer. Sugar, Cromium and Candida! Candida Albicans is the name of a yeast fungus that lives naturally in the gut of 80% of the population without causing harm. In some cases, it can spread too much and cause disease called Candidiasis. This could happen after treatment with antibiotics, which kill the bacteria that normally keep candida in check. Many health experts advise against all products containing yeast for people believed to suffer from Candidiasis. There is no reason for this, since foods with yeast do not promote growth or proliferation of Candida fungus in the gut. On the contrary, the easily absorbable chromium compounds in Bio-Chromium® (ChromoPrecise®) will benefit people with Candidiasis by helping to stabilise their blood sugar, which is often too high and volatile.

KEY HEALTH Yes! You can!!

By Belinda Pamos, Sonrisa

If you are missing, or need to remove all teeth in one or both jaws, implants may allow you to have a fixed full-arch bridge fabricated as well. As an alternative to wearing a full denture (if there is adequate bone or bone augmentation procedures can be performed to grow sufficient bone) multiple implants can be placed across the jawbone to provide support for a fixed bridge. This procedure is similar to those described for single or multiple implants but requires careful diagnosis, planning and coordination before treatment begins. This attention to detail will ensure that an appropriate number of implants can safely be placed in positions that will allow your dentist to fabricate a bridge which will meet your needs and expectations. The number of implants necessary for a full-arch fixed bridge varies depending on your particular anatomy, the opposing teeth, the type of bridge you want to have placed

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

and the number of teeth you want or need to replace with the prosthesis. A full arch of implants can be placed when you are already missing all teeth in one of your jaws. If you have teeth remaining, they may need to be removed as a first step before implant surgery can proceed, or sometimes the teeth may be extracted and implants placed immediately after the teeth have been removed. If there are teeth remaining, you may be able to have a temporary fixed-bridge made by your dentist to help transition from your own teeth to implants. In this scenario (while the implants are healing), the temporary bridge stays in place which allows chewing, speaking and smiling - all without having to wear a removable denture. If it is not possible to retain enough teeth to support a fixed bridge while the implants are healing, then you may need to wear a removable denture temporarily.

KEY HEALTH It’s all about Genie

By Anne Stark

Genie Take Ten Module – the world’s only 10 minute face lift. Genie Take Ten is known as the personal trainer for the face. Dr Baxendale is one of the world’s leading neurophysiologists and an expert in therapeutic electrical stimulation. He developed the Mediwave Technology which allows us to safely exercise the facial muscles. The waverform is up to 1000 times stronger than anything else on the market. Because of the strength of the waveform, treatment times are only 10 minutes and results are visible after the first session. Take 10 system is a completely new way to a younger, healthier looking face. It is based on the unique Baxendale Wave and is more effective than any other system available in the beauty industry. By creating a series or sustained contractions, the Baxendale Wave exercises the facial muscles in exactly the same way as we work our bodies in the gym. With exercise, sagging facial muscles return to their former position, increase in size, lift the features, reduce lines and wrinkles – The result - a younger, healthier appearance. Genie Slimtone Module – slimming, toning and cellulite reduction for the body Genie Complete uses specially developed electronic wave shapes to provide verifiable results. The treatments are carried out using the unique body hub device which incorporates a series of leads which allow the power output pulses through its channels. This is done through a series of electrodes strategically placed on the body allowing the current to pass through onto the muscle, causing a contraction. Just as with normal exercise, clients whose muscles are less toned would start off gently and increase their activity as they develop. The pre-set programmes reflect this and are set as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. A wide variety of aesthetic problems can be treated successfully including slimming, toning and cellulite. The preset programmes for toning works with the muscle slower than for slimming; this gives the effect of weight lifting, therefore re-contouring, reshaping and firming by building up muscle mass. 20 minutes of this treatment on the stomach is equivalent to 360 sit ups. Would you like to say goodbye to cosmetic surgery and experience the next generation of non-invasive treatments? Don’t be fooled by imitations as only the Genie has Dr R Baxendale’s Mediwave Technology and only Genie-trained people are able to operate Genie Complete. I invite you to a free consultation and you can decide if this treatment is for you.

KEY HEALTH “Positively Pink” & “Positively Blue’s” 2015 Screening Programmes…. We are delighted to advise that both the Positively Pink & Positively Blue screening programmes for 2015 have started with a bang and to date we have facilitated over 600 FREE screenings appointments for breast, testicular and prostrate cancer. There are more appointments available and the screening process is available to all British Passport holders living on the Costa del Sol. As you may already know, “Positively Pink” & “Positively Blue” are the Mijas - based charities with the sole aim to raise the necessary funds to provide education, support and a FREE breast or prostate / testicular screening for British Men & Women living on the Costa del Sol. For the ladies, “Positively Pink” offers a comprehensive (Gold Standard) screening process that includes a consultation, physical examination, health education as well as a mammogram or ultrasound, in some cases both. As well as this, ladies will also receive a translation into English of the result(s). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine. Each year there are approximately 41,000 new diagnoses. The incidence of breast cancer for men is on the increase too with approximately 300 new cases diagnosed yearly in the UK. It has been shown that early detection of breast cancer can improve the outcome. Survival rates from breast cancer have improved partly in recent years due to early presentation and from individuals being breast aware. The risk of breast cancer increases with age. 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50 though Positively Pink believes that screening should be available to all women from 18 years of age. For the men, “Positively Blue” offers a free consultation and PSA blood test as well as education and awareness on how to self examine. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with more than 30,000 men diagnosed annually. Around 10,000 men die from it every year, making it the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men. Often in the early stages Prostate cancer has no symptoms. Testicular cancer affects 1 in 500 men between the ages of 15 and 50. Both screening programmes are carried out in conjunction with Clinica Medicare, a nurse-led, British health centre based in La Cala de Mijas.

KEY HEALTH What is Thermal Auricular Therapy? There has been a lot of talk in the media recently regarding the use of Ear Candles and the risks and benefits of this popular therapy. I have been qualified in Thermal Auricular Therapy – its official title – since 2007. I was drawn to this therapy primarily because of the stories I had heard from friends after they had had their ears syringed at their local GP’s surgery. One reason that ear candling is better than ear syringing is because it draws out the wax, whereas syringing involves shooting water into the ears. This can lodge wax particles further inside the ear canal and cause infection if water stays lodged inside the ear. I have had very good results with ear candling and it is definitely the treatment that I choose whenever I have ear problems. There are many benefits of ear candling. It has helped people with sinus congestion, colds, ear aches and infections, headaches, lymphatic congestion, sore throats, mucus, sinus infections, assisting with relieving swimmer’s ear, balance and equilibrium. Frequent fliers also find this treatment very beneficial. It is safe, simple and natural. It is a soothing experience that reduces stress and tension and also sharpens mental functions. The use of ear candles is thought to be thousands of years old and was seen in Egypt, Greece and Rome. The treatment is very

18

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Patricia Kaines

relaxing. The client need only be concerned with lying fairly still in a comfortable position whilst the candle is gently inserted in their ear. When lit, the candles have a slight sucking action often referred as the ‘chimney principle’, drawing out impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. Some of the wax can be found in the lower section of the candle after removal from the ear, or some could even work its way up to the surface 24 - 48 hours later. The rising air inside the ear sets up a vibration which gently massages the eardrum. This can help to regulate the pressures involved inside the ear. The flow of air within the candle creates a circulation of concentrated vapour. This is both soothing and calming and protects the irritated areas. I always use Biosun ear candles which are guaranteed to be of a consistently high standard. During the month of September I have a special offer - an Ear Candling and Indian Head Massage combo all for the special price of 40 Euros. That is two treatments for the price of one! For more information or to book an appointment you can contact me either through Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas on 952 835 776 or if you prefer, call me directly on 666 170 868 or message me through Facebook or my website.

KEY HOLISTIC Change in Health ©

By Christine Heckel

Introduction Christine Heckel is a certified Sound Relaxation Coach trained by the Peter Hess Institute Germany, and has developed a 3-step concept “Change in Health ©”, which may be a way to optimal vitality and well-being in just 30 days for YOU. This programme will help you to detox in a holistic way - physically, emotionally and mentally. Our colon is the body’s power house which supplies energy to all of our organs and exerts great influence on the body, thoughts and feelings. The health and vitality stemming from the intestines is gaining broad interest, as evidenced from books such as “Gut Feeling” currently storming the bestseller lists, (Giulia Enders, Microbiologist ISBN-13 978-1771641494). 1st Step You will learn more about the programme and identify your personal needs in a 1-2-1 conversation. 2nd Step During the second step you will undergo a 30-day programme. During these 30 days you will have one individual session per week with Christine for a sound treatment and personal coaching. Both will support the detox process.

3rd Step In the third step at the end of the 30-day period you will have a constructive exchange. As part of this 3-step method, Christine uses the unique DARM-FIT programme, which has been developed by SWISS SHAPE. DARM-FIT is German for COLON-FIT - a true colon care programme which fits into a busy lifestyle AND offers a kick-start for intestinal health - in just 30 days! The body is detoxified through the intestines, it is well supplied with high-quality nutrients, you are trained to eat consciously, and healthy body functions are stimulated. KEY HOLISTIC Opening of “Healer of Hearts” Centre in Mijas Pueblo

By Arlene Cashman

Internationally Renowned Spiritual Healer ‘Mark Bajerski’ Opens His ‘Healer of Hearts’ Centre, Mijas Pueblo Congratulations Mark on the recent opening of your ‘Healer of Heart’s Centre’. Has this been something you’ve always wanted to do? Thank you very much. It is truly an exciting time for me and, I hope, for all the beautiful souls who will come and enjoy a visit to the ‘Healer of Heart’s’ Centre. Opening this Centre is truly the realisation of a long-awaited dream of mine and, with no surprises, it all happened beautifully this year due to a number of wonderful synchronicities! It is ideally located in the magical village of Mijas Pueblo and offers great space and energy. With wonderful views of the coastline below, the Centre is immediately welcoming. It is a special place that offers many wonderful spiritual treats for everyone to come along and enjoy. What is your vision or your plans for the future of the Healer of Heart’s Centre? For the past 10 years, it has been such an incredible joy for me to work full-time as a Pure Energy Healer. I’ve experienced many amazing miracles and experiences, all of which are deeply humbling and I am grateful to have witnessed. There is a very important shift happening across our world. More and more beautiful souls are awakening to their own amazing powers of healing and spiritual connectivity. They are seeking support and guidance. For a number of years, my Spiritual Workshops have been in great demand, both locally and around the world. In line with my vision, the Centre will provide the perfect environment for me to offer on-going guidance and support, through a variety of workshops and programmes, that aim to help others make that reconnection, relight their inner spark and to become the best healer that they truly already are! As we are all at different stages along our spiritual journey, the workshops and programmes are offered at different levels of intensities – to provide clarity and be as enjoyable as possible for everyone. I’m really excited by the response and uptake of the workshops already this year. It’s very heart-warming to have such great attendance and I love sharing all my experiences and secrets with each wonderful soul that joins a course. With more and more pure energy healers discovering their gifts, the future is very exciting indeed! That is exciting and you will be kept very busy with work-

shops. Does this mean that people can no longer see you on a one-to-one basis? My work as a Pure Energy Healer will never stop. One-toone spiritual healing sessions remain very central to my work and I’m always on call to those who need my help through their darkest moments. My work internationally will continue also. I’m overjoyed by the responses I receive around the world. I want to continue my work in support of the love and soul connections that have developed over the years. My family are incredibly important to me and the strength and support of my amazing wife, Suzie, and my children, China and Nico, really makes all of this possible. I continually work on keeping the right balance between work, rest and family - I’m pretty blessed in that I love all three - lol! Finally Mark, tell us a little bit more about how the Centre works and where people can find information about events and workshops? A lot of information will be updated on my website and on my Facebook page. People can also sign up for a newsletter for latest news on scheduled events and courses. What I am particularly proud about is how the design of the Centre allows for the hosting of so many spiritual treats. The Spiritual Healing room holds an incredible energy and light. It is a beautiful space for people to receive deep oneto-one healing and the clearing away of whatever issues and painful situations they are going through. I have a beautiful Meditation Room where I host regular Abundance Circle Ritual evenings that are always fully booked and where magic happens! The Claudia Co Relaxation Lounge is a space where people can come along to meet up for discussion, friendship and enjoy a tea or a coffee together. My Crystal Shop is another addition where people have a lot of fun choosing a new crystal for themselves or one of the many tools of divination that can be purchased during their visit. The Healer of Hearts Centre is not opened to the public. Visiting the Centre is by membership only or strictly by prior appointment made by phone or email. That is important in order to respect those times when workshops or one-to-one healings may be in progress. Details on becoming a member are also available on my website www.markbajerski.com.

KEY HOLISTIC Women Wellness Guide – Natural Hormone Balance

Welcome to Women’s Wellness Guide. Summer is not the perfect time of the year for ladies with hormone imbalance, so let’s address a few issues that affect us all at this time of the year. Night Sweats & Hot Flushes. The warm evenings are uncomfortable and day time flushes are even worse. So what can we do about this? Firstly if you wake up in the night, take a cool shower, let the water run over your feet first, working up your legs, then up to your tummy and your chest, then put it around the back of your neck, at the nape of your neck let the water run for a while, repeat this and damp dry yourself; you will sleep much better after this. During the day time try to do household jobs early in the morning before it gets hot, wear cool cotton clothes, floaty skirts and loose fitting tops; if you feel drained and tired, take a break, make an iced tea and relax. Alcohol raises blood pressure and will make you feel warmer, so if you are going to have a drink, make sure it’s in the evening and try things like weak gin and tonic, wine spritzer with lots of lemon and limes. Long drinks are far better and use ice that is made from bottled water. Water is limited in the summer and many chemicals are added, so avoid tap water for ladies living in Spain. Diet in the summer – try to eat lots of salads and include vegetables and fruit in your salad, this will keep you healthy and hydrated too. There are enormous amounts of salad recipes, check out online different recipes for the summer. Don’t drink iced water with your meal. Fruit in the afternoon or on the beach, by the pool is very refreshing; be creative and try new things. Spain offers so much for us to try.

By Aly Farmer ProgesterAll – how can it help me? Natural progesterone balancing cream is bio-identical, which means your body will relate to it in a natural sense, it’s not a chemical and so your body warms to it. The first reaction will be that you feel at home with yourself, it’s a “feel good factor cream” that’s why I call it the magic cream. ProgesterAll has a lot of work to do for us, and with patience we can eliminate some of the symptoms that come with hormone imbalance. Remember you don´t have to be in the change of life (at menopause stage) to experience hormone imbalance; this can start at any age and for different reasons. Using natural progesterone cream regularly will change your life and not only will you feel better, but the people around you will too. Symptoms to look out for: Hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, depression, breast tenderness, tearfulness, unexpected weight gain (around the middle and hips) dry skin, pre-menstrual tension, irregular periods, infertility, loss of interest in relations with your husband, thyroid deficiency, hair loss. This is a guide to the common symptoms of hormone imbalance, each woman has her own, but with my consultations I am able to guide you in the right direction to correct them. I am also able to recommend carefullychosen professional women for counselling and personal coaching to help you on this hormone journey. KEY FEATURE Dario and David, the Composers, Meet Cudeca It never fails to amaze me how the twists and turns in the fortunes of our lives occur, as in February of this year, I found myself standing near the entrance to the Cudeca charity shop in Fuengirola and as I was idly gazing, I noticed many people were coming and going through its doors and I thought how nice, that so many people take the time and effort to support this worthwhile cancer charity, that does so much for its patients and their relatives, not only helping them with their medical problems, but supporting and uplifting their spirits to handle and cope with the complex situation they find themselves in. My friend arrived and we moved on, then in late June whilst escaping the heat of the sun and desperate to cool down with a delicious cold beer, I found myself at the bar of the Tamisa Golf Hotel, my favourite watering hole that I also use for business meetings, and as I was gulping the last mouthful, I heard a voice calling my name and in surprise I saw the smiling face of Suzy Rowe, the delightful supporter and active worker for Cudeca. She called me over, ordered another beer for me and introduced me to two other people, the tall, impressive Carlos White, Cudeca’s fundraiser and the charming Gay Nyssen, both committed activists for the charity, I discovered. Within half an hour of chatting, the idea of writing a song especially for Cudeca had evolved, and presented to me and at that very moment, I recalled standing outside their shop. I later contacted David Mairs via his wife Linda, and he agreed to work together with me to create a new song and record it for them. I relayed this positive news to Suzy, we had a lunch with the others mentioned, but including Sandra Mellule, the owner of this very magazine, and Laura Elen, both Cudeca supporters. The Cudeca team worked rapidly with this idea of a new song and in a very short time, I found myself standing with Suzy and Gay in the beautiful Cudeca Hospice. It seemed to be out of my hands now and I sensed that something other than me and my ego was taking me along on a journey to a new experience and chapter in my life that could not be resisted. I met Marisa Martin, the Chief Executive and Medical Director, a most kind and charming doctor and along with the sensitive, hardworking Susan Hannam, the vice-President of the

Foundation, I was taken on a tour throughout the building, and much was explained to me about the work they do, as well as something about the patients and how they are cared for. I was more than impressed, and my feelings and emotions began growing inside me, though I did not show it to the others. I attended the meeting where the idea of the song was discussed and developed and around the walls were photos of celebrities who help and support Cudeca in different ways, such as the Hollywood star, Antonio Banderas, who contributes to Cudeca and is the patron of Lagrimas y Favores and the well-known Sandro Morelli, the owner of Marbella’s most prestigious restaurant,Villa Tiberio, who is active in his many charitable works. With the meeting over, I was taken to the home of Joan Hunt O.B.E the President and Founder of Cudeca, one of the most well-known and respected personalities on the Costa del Sol for her relentless and amazing efforts in organising and raising funds for this charity, as well as overseeing much of what is being achieved at every level. I was received by Joan with kindness and genuine interest in what I was proposing and although she had a gentle face and a sweet smile, I soon recognised the steely determination of this remarkable woman to achieve her goal, in helping to support and improve the quality of life of people with incurable cancer. I left her and all the other wonderful people I met that day, emotionally blessed with much to understand and consider about Cudeca. On the way home I also reflected upon the exciting, strange and sometimes bumpy but wonderful road that David Mairs and I have travelled along together, since the time we ran into one another in a supermarket and David agreed to join me in the arranging of my music “Marbella Marbella” a song for Marbella and the campaign I started, followed by our acclaimed song “Corazon,” for the UNESCO recognised charity “The Children for Peace” based in Rome; our latest large scale project “Amsterdam the Musical” being completed with the help of two great talents, Mugge Fischer and Ose del Sol, and now the challenge for us to create a song especially for Cudeca with their special motto “A special kind of caring.” For more information about Cudeca Hospice, visit: www.cudeca.org.

KEY FEATURE An Extract from “A Soldier’s Wife” The whole family gathered for Christmas Day 1921. James had got fairly regular work in the days preceding Christmas so Ellen had bought a goose and a ham for the dinner. She had also made a pudding to her mother’s recipe. Fitting them all around the table was not easy but they managed with much good humour. The party mood went on well into the evening. Once dinner was over, James sent Harry to ask neighbours to join them. The small room was crammed with people. Harry, Desmond and the two Kelly’s, all big men, stood with their backs to the wall. Julia, Violet’s daughter, stood beside Harry, stealing glances at him from time to time. The seats were left for the older women, who each held a child on her knee. James began a singsong with a rollicking version of “Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do”, which had been a great favourite with the troops at the front. Everybody sang and clapped along. Then Ellen sang “After the Ball”. When the song finished, James came over and kissed her, his face full of emotion. “I remember you singing that at our wedding and you haven’t changed a bit!” “Ah now, isn’t that lovely and romantic,” Mrs Kelly said while Harry and Joseph looked faintly embarrassed. James was quite merry and sentimental at this stage and he proposed that they all sing a few Christmas Carols. They ended with Harry singing “O Holy Night” which was his mother’s favourite. There was some comfortable chatting about other Christmases and the people they had shared them with. There were tears mixed with laughter when James spoke about his dead friend, Des, and some of the antics they used to get up to when they were together in India. He was in the mood for reminiscing and began to tell them about the experience of his first Christmas at the front, Christmas 1914. James was a

great storyteller and they were all enthralled as he told his tale. “On Christmas Eve in Flanders, a ceasefire was called so that both sides could go into No Man’s Land to collect the bodies of their fallen comrades. We were knee deep in mud and I was helping to place bodies on stretchers when I realised that a German soldier was standing very close to me. He was no more than seventeen or eighteen. He held out an opened packet of cigarettes for me to take one. I did and then he took one himself and lit both. We smoked in silence, just looking at each other and smiling. Then I picked up my end of the stretcher and walked back to our own side. As darkness fell and soldiers from both sides returned to their trenches, we heard a sound in the air which rose and swelled until we realised that the German were singing ‘Silent Night’ in their own language. We began to sing it in English and soon the voices blended in the night into one choir. Myself and all the men I could see had tears running down through the mud on their faces. The next day, we returned to killing each other. I often think of that young German and wonder whether he survived. He reminded me of Harry.” There was silence for a few minutes after he finished his story. Then they all sang “Silent Night” and thought about that one night of shared humanity at the beginning of a ferocious war. The spell was broken as Mrs Kelly and Violet stood up and began to gather their children. When everyone had gone and the children were in bed, James sat opposite Ellen on the other side of the range with a last drink in his hands, “That was a wonderful day and evening, Ellen. Thank you, my love.” Ellen reached over to hold his hand. “Having you here with us makes it special, James. I missed you so much when you were away. I love you very much.”

KEY SPORTS Golf Update

By Steve Billingham

Golf: 2015 Scottish Open Weighing up the options for a flutter on the Scottish Open. Marc Warren has done well in recent times with two third place finishes, last year’s winner Justin Rose or the 2010 70/1 winner Eduardo Molinari at 200/1 this time. Stephen Gallagher has also performed well in recent years. The tournament was played on the Gullane course.

At around quarter to seven the rain came again. Grey was a big colour in this year’s Open, plenty of golfers in grey jumpers and trousers. I followed the theme and watched the opening days play (on the box) in a grey sweatshirt.

After leading after 3 rounds, Daniel Brooks fell away with a 73 to finish tied 7th. 3 birdies at the last 4 holes gave Rickie Fowler the win with -12. A tied fourth place finish for Marc Warren along with the consistent Eddie Pepperall (a runner-up and 2 4ths in 13 tournaments.) Luke Donald, Ross Fisher, David Howell and Miguel Angel Jimenez all finished inside the top 10.

‘Tom Watson is going to have his walk up the 18th this Friday evening and rightly so,’ announced the commentator.

The moan? Two poxy hours of highlight from the whole tournament and not a sausage from the first 2 days. The Open, St Andrews The conditions on the opening day’s play were distinctly easier in the morning than in the afternoon. The winds were up to around 15 mph. Dustin Johnson with his booming tee shots made an excellent start as did Jordan Spieth. ‘Step aboard the birdie bus although I’ve no idea what a birdie bus actually is,’ quipped a commentator as Jordan Spieth holed a birdie putt.’ Paul Lawrie chipped in on an early hole, another Scot, Marc Warren, made a strong start with two sub 70 rounds. On the second day, the wind was up to 20 mph and there was talk of balls ‘oscillating’ like at Turnberry in 2009. 2 inches of rain delayed the start by 3 hours. The shrieks of the seagulls could be heard. A +1 projected cut meant that Sir Nick Faldo improbably had to shoot a 62 to survive the cut. A cheer went up for a Faldo birdie at the 17th and he threw his fists up in the air like he did when he used to win – a brief roll back of the years. He holed out on the 18th for a 1 under par 71. Tiger Woods needed a 68 to make the cut but shot 75.

26

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Charl Schwartzel missed from three feet after the commentator said he ‘had a good nerve for holing putts.’

What is an Open without cheering Tom Watson up the 18th? Cheering Tom Watson up the 18th is part and parcel of the Open. Watson doffed his cap on the bridge for the final time to rapturous applause. ‘Anybody would think he’d won it,’ remarked an observer. He had graced the tournament for 40 years, had won it 5 times and was 8 feet away from winning it improbably for a 6th time in 2009. Play for the second day finished just before 10pm, Dustin Johnson led on 10 under par. The third day was again heavily delayed with rain and strong winds. At the end of it, Dustin Johnson still led on 10 under with Danny Willett a shot back but with only 2 rounds played. Play will go to a Monday for the first time since 1988’s Royal Lytham Open. The 1st and 18th fairways are 129 yards wide Dustin Johnson could not hole a thing in the third round, a flurry of bogeys slipping him back while Danny Willett could only level par the round keeping him on 9 under. The new leaders were Louis Oosthuizen on 12 under, amateur Paul Dunne and Australian Jason Day. The final day’s play was again delayed. Jordan Spieth had a 6ft uphill putt to tie for the lead but missed. Oosthiuzen, meanwhile, birdied the last to set up a 3 way play-off over 4 holes with Marc Leishman and Zach Johnson who finished on 15 under. Oosthuizen three-putted and Leishman bogeyed the third play-off hole and Zach Johnson teed off at the 18th leading by 1. Oosthuizen missed from 10ft to force a tie and 100/1 Zach Johnson was the 2015 Open Champion. ‘Thank the Lord’ he said.

KEY ASTROLOGY Jupiter in Virgo - August 2015 - August 2016 With Jupiter now in the sign of Virgo, another level of evolution is opening up as we begin to integrate and apply the confidence and enthusiasm inspired in us while Jupiter was in Leo from August 2014-August 2015. Virgo rules work and health, as well as service to others. Many may begin to study and practice new ideas in emotional/spiritual health, and new lifestyle programmes could kick in that offer education in ideas previously considered “alternative”. Over the next 12 months we have an opportunity to find healthy ways to improve our lifestyles, leaving behind old, worn-out habits that no longer serve us. For instance the couch potato who decides to start day 1 of an exercise programme wants to feel results are possible; yes they are, though it may take a concerted effort on that person’s part to work on their issues in a practical hands-on way. Getting motivated is key; perhaps learning a new skill, starting an exercise class, volunteering to assist a charity for those less fortunate; basically setting in motion something to make life feel more complete. On a philosophical level, transiting Jupiter (philosophy) in Virgo (an earth sign) indicates that using our hands, getting involved with the details of nature will help us to feel more fulfilled. And all we need to do is pay close attention to our life! In our high-tech world where speed is everything, it’s no wonder we forget to smell the coffee… or the roses! So try this sometime… stop, take a deep breath and appreciate the wonder of the world you live in. Believe me, that appreciation will come back ten-fold in ways you may not imagine. All the Earth signs (Virgo, Capricorn and Taurus) may experience major developments in individual expression during the second half of 2015 and first half of 2016 … for more insight, think back to August 2003 to August 2004 the last time Jupiter was in Virgo – what was happening in your life then? Bearing in mind the areas of life Jupiter in Virgo represents, as noted above, the interpretations below give a broad idea of how these may be experienced in each Zodiac sign over the next 12 months, and depending on whether your birthday is the beginning middle or end of your sun sign. For example birthdays at the beginning may already be feeling the effects while those with birthdays late in the sign may not feel them until Spring/Summer of 2016. For information about birth chart readings and Astrology Workshops for Beginners write to Janet at astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk --- Hasta la próxima vez… :)

KEY PETS Colloidal Liquid Silver

By Joanna the Dog Groomer

The Uses of Colloidal Liquid Silver in Dogs and why Every Home should have some Colloidal silver damages a pathogen’s ability to metabolize oxygen. Deprived of oxygen, fungi, bacteria and viruses die while the healthy tissue of your dog’s body remains unaffected, meaning your dog’s immune system then takes over to eliminate dead pathogens from the body. It was used by the ancient Romans and Greeks, doctors continued to prescribe it up until the early 20th century and as a antibiotic, it still has its place as colloidal silver use does not encourage the development of anti-biotic resistant strains of bacteria and can often be used alongside other medical treatments, with no documented side affects except a few cases of people turning blue who have drunk the liquid in very high ppm quality over long periods without breaks. The FDA is outnumbered in their desire to stop this age-old natural product that can be produced at home with the correct tools and investment; I am sure you know what I am getting at?? Having used this product myself for over 20 years both for my family and my pets, I am very proud to now produce the highest quality Colloidal Liquid Silver from 12ppm upwards. We are so proud of our product that we are even happy to quality test it in front of you and we bottle our liquid silver in only the highest quality amber bottles. It is also safe for cats and people. Now let’s move on to our top uses for liquid silver in dogs: Anti-itch Spray As an anti-itch spray CLS is soothing, cooling and does not sting so is safe to use on even very sore skin, helping to kill all kinds of germs and can be used as often as you like. Wounds By far the most amazing results when used to flush out,

38

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

soak or clean wounds and for surgery scars. Ear and Eye Infections etc CLS can be used to treat a whole host of problems but we have had wonderful results with chronic ear infections where vet treatment has failed. It can also be used as an emergency treatment for Parvo Virus as it can be given right away until you can get the dog to the vets (very important in the treatment of Parvo). It is also fantastic for all types of tummy problems in dogs, to brush teeth with and to help with the control of fleas/ticks and worms. CLS is also helpful in the prevention of germs and a small amount added to water acts to sterilise. It is wonderful for breeds of dogs with folds of skins as it can be used daily to clean in between them. We sell CLS in amber small droplet bottles suitable for ears and eyes and also spray bottles as well as normal amber bottles from 125ml up to 1 litre. Prices start at just 8 Euros. We offer wonderful treatment packages such as our 300ml droplet bottle and 125ml spray bottle for just 25 Euros each bottle is filled with 12ppm CLS. Having used the product for over 20 years on our own family and the many hundreds of our own pets and clients’ dogs, we are here to help you with every aspect of usage and dosage of CLS, alongside our many other natural products for dogs including homemade body sprays, flea/tick products, skin and coat balms, creams, ear drops, shampoos, homemade wheat and gluten-free 100% natural dog treats, infused health oils, grooming oils including our large range of coconut oils. KEY MOTOR Is it Illegal to drive in Flip Flops or Heels? Reglamento General de Circulacion, article 3.1 says: “You have to drive properly, avoiding damage to people/ things. It is forbidden to drive in a negligent or reckless way.” When you drive with flip-flops you can have an accident, and when you drive back home from the beach, your flip-flops are usually wet and contain sand; you therefore have a higher risk of losing your flip-flops while driving, or when you use your car’s pedals. In our opinion, you cannot break or accelerate properly with flip-flops. These factors can lead to a traffic accident and, in this case you can, in theory, be fined for driving with inappropriate footwear. We

have known many cases of people driving with flip-flops or with high heels, who have had an accident caused by this type of footwear. However, there is NO article or law which prohibits the use of footwear like this, but the article above (3.1) can be applied to those drivers who have an accident as a consequence, or do not drive properly. So it is NOT illegal to drive wearing flip-flops, but it is advisable not to wear them for driving. Please like and follow the n332 Facebook Page or see more interesting articles on n332.es.

KEY FEATURE A Social Experiment Followers, fans, likes and mentions can all be a little on the mind boggling side of things if you’re not familiar with the lingo. How about blogging or vlogging? If all this social media mayhem and online obscurity is getting the better of you, but you’d like in on the action, then we have a step by step solution for you. Right this minute we are creating a community project called La Cala Life. It will include a website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (for starters). The content will be created for the people by the people - YOU. The central focus from a geographic point of view is La Cala de Mijas. The village is currently a hive of activity, with lots going on, but not easy to find out exactly what and when. As such, the initial plan is to get the community buzzing on social media but with a focal point of one channel, namely La Cala Life. Any business or individual can post, message share or provide content for any social platform and the website. Basically the purpose of the experiment is to turn La Cala sociable.

By Fiona Catchpowle If you’ve ever dreamed of being a writer, maybe we can help you make that happen. Essentially you can watch us create everything from scratch and you can also be involved. This is a perfect opportunity to be part of the real world of mouth, not just the word. If you would like to join #TeamLaCalaLife then send us an email now - info@lacalalife.es Or visit LaCalaLife.es for more information. Editor’s note: Key to Mijas Costa has been YOUR local magazine since 1999. During that time I have met and worked with so many people and have been amazed by two things in particular – (a) the way so many different nationalities bond together, and (b) the amount of “hidden” talents there are amongst our residents, such as musicians, artists, authors etc. Key to Mijas Costa is delighted to collaborate with La Cala Life and we welcome all our locals to be part of OUR community so that we can make La Cala even better for all our residents, businesses and visitors.

KEY LAW New EU Data Protection Supervisor- EDPS to Focus on External Relations

By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21 S.L.

13/02/2015 Giovanni Buttarelli explained that his priority over the next five years is to be proactive in promoting a culture of data protection – in addition to his supervisory role with the EU institutions. This will mean active involvement in advising policymakers to come up with innovative legislative solutions. He said that he will urge the EU Council of Ministers to speed up the process of finding common ground on the draft EU Data Protection Regulation.

The Regulator demands that Google’s privacy notice is tailored to each specific service (such as Gmail, Google Wallet, and Chrome). In order to profile users of its services, Google will have to first obtain their informed consent. This requirement will have to be implemented, via different mechanisms, both for new accounts and for existing Google accounts. Individuals will have to be offered the right to object to profiling. Additional requirements relate to data storage, deletion and anonymization.

Italy’s DPA Extends its Reach To Audit Google’s US Headquarters and Possibly Other Companies

Japan Plans to Amend its Law and Allow for Inspections

26/02/2015 The Garante, Italy’s DP Authority, is requesting changes to Google’s privacy policy to bring it into line with Italy’s data protection law. Google has until 15 January 2016 to comply. The decision includes the opportunity for the Garante to conduct spot checks at Google’s US headquarters. A Garante spokesman said: “The on-site spot checks relate to compliance by Google with the privacy policy requirements our DPA had set out in its order of July 2014. The order envisaged a ‘verification protocol’ to be submitted by Google to our DPA, which the DPA approved recently. Thus, the onsite spot checks are part of the regular assessment our DPA will carry out throughout 2015, including via quarterly updates. We plan to visit Google’s headquarters twice. We will see how this evolves. In any case we would like to use a consistent approach vis-à-vis multinational companies under similar or identical circumstances.”

The new Commission, consisting of the President and eight Commissioners, would have the power to conduct on-site inspections and to provide information to foreign Data Protection Authorities. We also enjoyed the dessert of Cotton Soft Cheese Cake with Green Tea Ice Cream. THE NEWMARKET RESTAURANT Under New Ownership. In C/Cartama, La Cala (behind Town Hall). Home of the famous Sunday Carvery served between 2 and 10pm, all you can eat just 12.95 Euros - kids 5.95 Euros – booking recommended. 2 for 1 Cocktails Tues – Sat 6-8pm. I write this editorial with a little bit of nostalgia as The Newmarket was my very first client in 1999. I have however met the new owners, husband and wife team Paul & Krisztina who successfully ran pubs and restaurants in the UK and are full of enthusiasm for their new business. They have also brought their chef with them from the UK! They have retained the Sunday Carvery, for which The Newmarket is renowned, and this includes a choice of 4 meats, delicious roasties, homemade Yorkies and perfectly cooked veg. I understand it is already so popular that it is advised to book. The Newmarket prides itself on obtaining the best local produce. All food is freshly cooked from those raw ingredients. Their Cooking methods and the sourcing of fresh ingredients makes their menu 98% gluten free! Here are some suggestions from the a la carte menu. Starters include Creamy Garlic Mushrooms on Toasted Brioche. Smoked Salmon with Capers, Brown Bread and Salad Garnish and Confit Duck Leg with Noodle Salad and Sweet Chilli Dressing (can’t wait to try that). Favourites for main course are Slow Roast Pork Belly with Red Wine & Apple Sauce, Sauté Potatoes and Market Veg, Full Rack of Ribs with Homemade BBQ Sauce, French Fries and Coleslaw, Steaks, Fish and a good selection for vegetarians. Smaller portions for kids plus there is also a special menu for them. Wines are available to complement the food and there is a full cocktail list. We are looking forward to sampling the food at The Newmarket Restaurant shortly and look forward to giving you a first-hand report in the next issue but in the meantime watch out for posts on Key to Mijas Costa Facebook page! The Newmarket Restaurant will also be my guest on Mijas International this autumn – watch this space…

LIFESTYLE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

is a bespoke and tailored proper ty management service for you and your proper ties. If you are a homeowner that uses your proper ty for holidays and for friends/family, your outlook and services required will be entirely different to that of a professional renter. However you intend to use your proper ty, your approach, outlook and attitude to your proper ty is unique, therefore your proper ty management company should be working to the same goals. At Lifestyle they take all of this into account and treat each owner as an individual and work together to best plan and implement the required approach. Please see main adver t on page 33.

START GROUP

real estate can be found in El Zoco, Calahonda, near the pharmacy. The company was formed in 2003 with par tners who had previous experience working with a large Real Estate company but subsequently formed their own as they saw that the personal touch was lacking. Star t Group’s motto has always been to provide their customers with exceptional services and above all, to stay with them even after the purchase, should they need help with anything from renovations to tips on furniture etc. You may think that this sounds the same as what any other agency on the coast might be saying, but after 12 years, they can look back to great results with hundreds of satisfied customers as can be seen from the updated testimonials on their website. Buying a proper ty in Spain is a question of trust, so if you have the right help throughout the process and afterwards, this can make proper ty purchase easier, and a lot more enjoyable. Although they have over 900 proper ties on their books, they check in advance that all documents, licenses, etc. are in order as of course it saves a lot of time. Star t Group is also an authorised agent for two large banks and they market bank repossessions. To become an authorised agent for a bank, the company and its employees go through quality control, attend courses and have valid liability insurance. Star t Group has gone through this process without any problems. Star t Group only deals with proper ty sales, so they are exper ts in their field. If you are looking to sell or buy a proper ty, then give the exper ts a call. Please see main adver tisement on page 3.
