KEY BEAUTY Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion is a very effective skin treatment that creates a fresh, glowing and rejuvenated look. What can you expect? • Promotes a healthy and more youthful complexion • Reduces the appearance of wrinkles • Rejuvenates the skin for a glowing complexion • Decreases or eliminates mild to moderate acne scarring • Helps decrease hyperpigmentation or brown spots • Eliminates sun damage and dry skin

By Forum

• Full facial massage • Vitamin supplement • Soothing and hydrating masque The cost of a treatment is 50.00 Euros or 140.00 Euros for 3 treatments. Please visit our Facebook Page – The Forum La Cala de Mijas, for special offers.

How does it work? Microdermabrasion is non-invasive and the procedure only removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells to reveal the fresher, younger cell beneath. Regardless of your skin’s condition the fine lines and age spots may be erased and acne scars and stretch marks will become less obvious. It is like a superficial skin polishing.... a safe and pain-free method of rejuvenating the skin. It is also gentle enough to suit almost any skin type. A common skin complaint for which microdermabrasion is most effective is acne scarring. Acne scars form in the dermis which lies directly below the surface layer, the epidermis. This area cushions the skin and, in acne sufferers, becomes inflamed as the body works overtime to repair the wound created from bursting or removing blackheads, pimples and scaly skin. When the body works so hard to heal itself, an excess build up of collagen can occur. This collagen can stay in place creating a pit in the skin which can be removed or decreased thanks to microdermabrasion technology. Our diamond tip microdermabrasion treatments are performed with state of the art equipment by a fully qualified therapist and include the following... • Full facial cleansing • Full skin analysis • Complete microdermabrasion treatment

They are still marching for women’s right to take part in the decisions that affect their lives free from harassment and abuse. The World Economic Forum has updated its statistics for Gender gap by country, 2017 with UK ranking 15th and Spain 24th in the Global Index. This report also and sadly states that the Global Gender Gap is more than 200 years away. It’s not all gloom, we have come a long way in the last 100 years.

KEY HEALTH Do you suffer from Dry Eyes? Do you spend all day working from a computer screen? This alongside wearing contact lenses, medical conditions, laser eye surgery and even simply the ageing processes are all common causes of dry eyes. If you experience a dry, gritty feeling, itching, stinging or redness, or constantly watering eyes then you may suffer from a dry eye condition. The good news is that there is a natural solution, which is used by thousands of people for dry eyes, dry mouth and intimate dryness. Dry Eyes and Omega 7 SBA24 Dry eye conditions affect around one in ten people and the condition is 50 per cent more prevalent in women than men. Research has shown that Omega 7 SBA24 effectively relieves symptoms of dryness, often removing the need for eye drops. Omega 7 SBA24 is a nutritional supplement prepared from the berries of the sea buckthorn plant. Modern research has found that sea buckthorn oil is essential for the health of the body’s mucus membranes, which form the protective lining of the eyes, mouth, digestive and female reproductive tracts, giving protection against infection and dryness. Omega 7 SBA24 can also provide relief from dryness affecting the mouth, skin (conditions such as eczema and psoriasis), intimate areas (such as intimate dryness during the menopause) and digestive complaints such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn’s disease. Who would have thought that a tiny orange berry could contain so much powerful goodness?

By Pharma Nord

I needed to squint my eyes, I just wanted to shut them. They didn’t itch or water, but I was always aware of how they felt and knew that they must be looking red and sore. I would use drops every few hours at least throughout the day until I went to bed. I also tried not wearing make-up or only using make-up for sensitive eyes. It was frustrating. “I was walking past a chemist and saw a blackboard outside advertising the Omega 7 to help with dry eyes. The sales assistant told me great things and I couldn’t be more pleased with them. I hope I will never be without them as they have made a genuine difference and I hardly use my drops anymore, which is incredible. “After the first couple of weeks I couldn’t quite believe it could be so much better. My eyes didn’t feel uncomfortable and sore and I kept looking in the mirror to check if they were red yet - and they weren’t! Now I just wouldn’t be without them.” For more information visit www.omega7.co.uk or to purchase visit Anni’s Vital Shop.

Omega 7 SBA24 – The gold standard The natural oil in Pharma Nord’s Omega 7 is derived from both the pulp and seeds of the sea buckthorn berry. This combination is called SBA24 sea buckthorn oil. It’s a unique, standardised oil containing all omega fatty acids in a balanced ratio. It is the gold standard for quality and is the formulation used in clinical trials on the effectiveness of Omega 7. Did you know? 98% of customers would recommend Pharma Nord’s Omega 7! Feedback came from over 7,000 respondents to a survey. That’s high praise indeed for a natural product! Omega 7 SBA24 - “I just wouldn’t be without them” Claire Pentecost suffered with dry eyes her whole adult life and thought she had tried everything. Then she discovered Omega 7 SBA24. “When I woke up my eyes would be bright red and bloodshot and feel dry and sore. As the day went on, I could only ever describe them as feeling very ‘hot’. KEY HEALTH Grief is as Unique as the Griever “No-one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid. The same fluttering in the stomach, the same restlessness, the yawning. I keep on swallowing. At other times it feels like being mildly drunk or concussed. There is a sort of invisible blanket between the world and me.” A Grief Observed. C.S. Lewis One thing we can guarantee in our life is that we will grieve and experience loss at some time. It is a fact of life that neither our education system nor the material society in which we live acknowledge, nor do they help us, prepare for this inevitable happening. Grief comes in many forms and for many reasons. It is not just the loss of a loved one due to death, it can also be the grief of a lost love through divorce or separation. In fact some have said to me that the grieving through divorce or being abandoned can be greater than loss due to death as they feel that the person chooses to leave the relationship, unlike the dead person who usually does not choose this path. It can come as quite a surprise to people who are suffering the loss of a loved (or indeed, unloved) member of the family, to realise that they have already mourned deeply in that particular relationship, long before the person died. They realise in death that the relationship they mourned never actually existed except in their hearts and dreams. Or perhaps the person they knew and loved was lost in the abyss of dementia. We can mourn deeply the loss of a happy situation in life due to an illness changing the way we live or it can be due to a positive life-style change which can still mean leaving a way of life or people behind. Elizabeth Kubler Ross wrote eloquently about grief and described the five stages as being: 1. Denial: this is the phase where there is a sense that the loss is not real and therefore seems impossible to accept. 2. Anger: Bowlby describes this stage as “yearning and searching”. We are pre-occupied with the future we have lost and resentment with this loss can produce the anger that can come from fear. We may also appear obsessed with the person we have lost and constantly look for reminders of them. 3. Bargaining: at this stage we are beginning to accept the changes in our lives along with the realisation that nothing

12

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Provided by Medicare

will ever be as it was or as we imagined it could be. This can lead to hopelessness and despair as well as anger and questioning. 4. Depression: the bargaining stage can lead to feelings of chaos and disorganisation which in turn can lead to a depression as we feel that life can never make sense again. We may withdraw from others too. 5. Acceptance: In this stage, grief does not go away nor is it fully resolved but it can recede to a hidden section of the brain and heart, where it continues to influence us but is not at the forefront of the mind. Re-organisation of our lives becomes a possibility. It becomes clear that while grief is unique to each individual, it is also omni-present in life. It takes on many forms and guises and each person has the right, indeed the need, to experience grief in their own way, whatever the cause. Some can find themselves criticised when they behave in a way which others find unacceptable. It is extremely important that whatever our chosen way of grieving is, it is respected and honoured. As long as it does not cause harm to ourselves or others, of course. Counselling and therapy can be very useful at these times. I have found, without exception, that working with the process of grief, underlying issues have surfaced which have demanded our attention. It is not for anyone other than the sufferer to decide whether a path of in-depth exploration should be pursued, however it can be helpful to acknowledge its existence if only to understand the nature of this particular grief. After sessions of individual therapy or counselling, it can be extremely beneficial to join a group for continuing support. I have known some people effectively use the support of the group as an adjunct to individual work; understanding without judgement is essential during this process of grief and self-discovery. A supportive, sensitively facilitated group has proved to be both useful and successful in many situations. It can offer the individual a safe space to name their grief or to say the loved

one’s name out loud without fear that they are, as they might believe, boring long-suffering family and friends. Or it can offer family and friends a greater understanding and comfort when someone close is diagnosed with a life changing illness as it supports the grieving process of lives completely changed. Those around us are often at a loss for appropriate expressions of help and love and will sometimes not want to hear of our pain as they cannot “fix” it for us. Sitting with the person without feeling the need to find a solution or offer advice is a difficult stance for many. A support group can help us understand and accept just how many forms of grief there are and how we all are entitled to the dignity of our own experience. A client once

expressed to me how his inability to grieve resulted in a sense of isolation from the family as he did not even begin to experience his grief for 6 years after his father died. Being kind, gentle and honest with ourselves is the pathway to acceptance of ourselves and our situation. Acceptance does not mean that we no longer hurt or care, it means that we have found a safe place within us to hold the love and the pain in equal balance so that we can once again find joy without guilt. KEY HOLISTIC What is Sound Massage?

By Christine Heckel

The term “sound massage” is composed of the words SOUND and MASSAGE – this is a treatment using sound and its vibration, which has a tradition of more than 5000 years in Ayurveda, the ancient traditional Indian healing art. For this treatment, we do not just use any sound, but the sound of special singing or sound bowls – more precisely, we use Peter Hess® therapy singing bowls. Peter Hess is considered a pioneer in the field of the application of singing or sound bowls and has been developing the Peter Hess® sound massage and further sound methods for health support since 1984. The word “massage” in this context does not refer to a massage in classical terms as we know it in physiotherapy but has been chosen because many clients describe their experiences during such a sound treatment as a kind of “massage”, as being touched and moved by sound and vibration – on a very subtle and cellular level. During a sound massage, singing bowls are used as a medium to convey the sound vibrations to the body. Singing bowls are placed on the dressed body and then gently tapped to make them vibrate. A pleasant sound rich in overtones invites for well-being and relaxation. The created sound vibration is carried into the body. Our body, that consists of 70-80% liquids, can

brilliantly transmit sound. The physical vibration of the singing bowls continues by degrees through the skin, the tissue, the body’s antra, the organs, bones and the whole body. With some people who are especially “permeable” and sensitized, the vibration of a singing bowl played on the soles of their feet can be felt right up to their vertex. The whole idea of the Peter Hess sound massage originates from the experiences that Peter Hess made in Nepal, India and Tibet. The Peter Hess® sound massage is an occidental method and is conceived mainly as an holistic method for relaxation. The sounds and the vibrations facilitate reaching a state of comforting, regenerating relaxation in no time. Christine is the only official reseller of high quality Peter Hess® Therapy singing bowls in Spain, made of 12 different metals. She teaches people in workshops and courses on how to effectively integrate singing bowls into daily life to enjoy its benefits, one of which may be a better and deeper sleep. Contact Christine for more information by calling +34 667 43 88 29 or send a message to ch@christine-heckel.com. KEY HEALTH Operation Detox

By Jon Stark

We hear a lot about detox! My message to you is that opting for a healthy life style is more important than crash detoxing. Once you have found a plan for healthy eating, then a cleansing detox can be great once every few months. Just a few things like a smoothie a day or salad with a tasty dressing, for example – a choice from fresh coriander, mint, lemon juice, orange juice, ginger, agave syrup or stevia, honey, apple cider vinegar, nuts or oil. Try to add new ingredients and make it your own. A great detoxing dressing can make a normal salad stand out. My advice is to put the ingredients that YOU like into your salad or smoothie. Smoothies are great to cleanse your liver and kidneys. For example why not try these ingredients in your smoothie beetroot, apple, ginger, lemon, spinach or kale. Start with a few ingredients, taste and then if you like, add

a couple more to find the flavour you prefer. Since it’s a smoothie, it will have fibre to balance your sugar intake and anyone with constipation will be grateful for this kind of fibre as it helps with bowel movements! I have found that just small changes will give big results in your life such as drinking enough water or buying ecological products whenever you can. Other tips include starting your own herb garden and eating more plant protein. You will probably surprise yourself how you can make good tasting food that’s healthier for you, but of course I appreciate it is difficult to stop some old habits! Remember, small changes will give you great results and you can keep adding bit by bit. Whether you would like your detox for a short or longer period, I can assure you whatever you chose will be great for your general well being.

KEY SPORTS Sports Roundup

By Steve Billingham

Snooker Round-Up Unknown quantity, Sunny Akani, found himself 4-2 up on Ronnie O’Sullivan in the UK Championship and actually had a chance to win the match 6-4. O’Sullivan was able to close out the match 6-5 but World number 84, Sunny Akani, had come within 4 balls of beating Rocket. O’Sullivan beat Shaun Murphy in the final 10-5 receiving £170,000 while Murphy got £75,000, not bad for 12 days work. In 1993, the final format changed to best of 19 frames and a 17-year-old O’Sullivan lifted the trophy. 24 years later, he lifted it for the 6th time and his 31st ranking title. Days later Jimmy White and Sunny Akani were paired against each other in the first round of the Scottish Open in Glasgow. White won 4-1 with two 70 plus breaks. A thrilling Scottish Open final won by Neil Robertson 9-8 after trailing 8-4, his first tournament victory in 18 months. Yupeng, ranked 67, missed a pink with the extension and a black to win 9-7. He seemed reluctant to use the rest, preferring instead to stretch over. Robertson was able to put a 59 break together in the decider for the victory. Pistol Wins a Major Next up was The Masters, frame 4 of the quarter final between Trump and Murphy was interrupted by a buzzing wasp. The frame took 35 minutes but Trump eventually won the match 6-4. Mark Allen’s 6-1 demolition of Ronnie O Sullivan was the shock result of the quarter finals. Kyren Wilson at 5-2 down looked down on his luck and was hitting and hoping. However, a 72 break after a wreckless Trump plant attempt made it 4 frames on the bounce and a 6-5 win leaving Wilson buzzing for the final. The frame lasted 47 minutes, a phone went off 3 times, Wilson missed a straight pink and Allen levelled at 2-2. Allen, with better cue ball control, edged in front 7-5, Wilson rallied to 8-7 but the Pistol took the last 2 frames for a 10-7 win sealing it with a 71 break. The high break of the tournament was an entertaining 139 by Liang Wenbo. FA Cup Round-Up A high tempo, physical third round derby between Liverpool and Everton which Liverpool won 2-1. Manchester United overcame Derby 2-0 although Derby keeper Scott Carson actually made a couple of good saves. Fleetwood Town held Leicester City to a goalless draw, an awful match, not much more than a park game. Indeed one TV pundit tipped Fleetwood for the win and they had the better of the closing stages with various set pieces and corners. League 2 Coventry City dumped out Stoke City 2-1 in a shock result of the round. Shrewsbury and West Ham’s goalless draw was physical and Shrewsbury had the better chances.

KEY PETS Toxic Animals

By Joanna Fluer Oxley of Compassionate Grooming

In this article I would like to write about some toxic animals that are common here in Spain and that can seriously harm not only your dogs, but other family pets and even cause problems in humans.

one of the most painful bites you or your dog will receive and in dogs, vet treatment is needed to control pain and stop the dog from chewing the area to look for swelling or allergic reaction.

Poisonous Toads Spain has a few poisonous toads but the most common and deadly one is the common Bufo toad which, when threatened, will secrete a poison so toxic that a dog who has bitten one could become seriously ill within minutes. Symptoms in dogs include drooling, pawing at mouth, head shaking, vomiting, foaming at mouth, loss of coordination, difficulty in breathing, fitting. Emergency vet treatment is key and you should always have emergency vet details to hand. Sadly I hear of dogs losing their lives due to owners not knowing their dog has had contact with a toad or didn’t know how toxic they are and who didn’t seek prompt vet treatment.

Processional Pine Caterpillars These pretty caterpillars are in fact, next to mosquito sand fly, the biggest problems to our dogs here in Spain, mainly because dogs lick their paws after a walk and even just a few caterpillar hairs can cause gangrene of the tongue leading to the dog losing large parts of the tongue. You can see the caterpillars’ cocoons in pine trees. They look like white cotton candy. It’s the hairs on the caterpillars that are toxic and these hairs will cause serious itching and swelling which can often lead to skin infections where large sections of the skin will die. These hairs can also be breathed in causing serious complications. Prompt vet treatment is recommended.

Spiders There are many types of spiders in Spain and most will bite/ sting if threatened. There are a few bites that can cause swelling, bruising of skin, pain, allergic reaction or serious wound infection. In fact I see many dogs with pimple-type boils that are most likely caused by a spider bite as the wound can appear to look like a whitehead or boil. Centipedes & Millipedes Spain has many types of centipedes and millipedes but one to watch out for is the Tiger Centipede, a large yellow and black stripped critter that can give a nasty bite. This is

26

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Lastly not to forget the biggest dangers to our dogs being mosquitos, ticks and sandflies (leishmaniasis) and not so common - snakes, scorpions and fire Salamanders. It’s important that you ensure you have access to a vet that is open 24 hours a day and that is able to start fast treatment to your dog if needed. If you live far away from any 24 hour vet, then I advise you speak to your vet concerning keeping an antitoxin medication kit at home. I do and I have had to use it a few times with my own dogs. Lastly, remember do not feed or give your dog a drink - this may cause more of the toxin to be ingested. Prompt vet treatment is key.

KEY COMPUTERS The Best Browsers for using the Web! The web browser is by far the most important piece of software on your PC—at least for most users. Unless you’re at a workstation crunching numbers you probably spend the majority of your computer time staring at a web app or a website. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’ve always got the best tool for the job! There are many choices such as, Google’s Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera. Let’s not forget you can also use Edge, the built-in option for Windows. But which browser is best? Chrome Google Chrome is a very popular browser indeed! Google’s browser has built a dedicated fan base thanks to its massive extensions library, and the fact that it just gets out of your way to put the focus on web content, not the browser’s trimmings. Chrome isn’t quite as simplistic as it once was, but it’s still very easy to use. There isn’t much to Chrome except a huge URL bar plus a space for extensions, a bookmarking icon, tabs, and that’s it. Mozilla Firefox For users who want greater privacy than a Google-made browser can provide, the open source Mozilla Firefox is a great choice. Firefox brings a new and updated design with refreshed icons, and a new library section that houses your history, pocket reading list, downloads, and synced tabs. KEY LAW E-privacy Regulation not ready to coincide with GDPR implementation

It is hoped that the Trilogue on the EU e-privacy Regulation will start after the summer recess, the rapporteur for the European Parliament on e-privacy Regulation, MEP Birgitta Sippel said at the CPDP conference in Brussels.” The GDPR and e-privacy Regulation will not be ready at the same time as there isn’t any forecast on when the e-privacy provisions will be in force. The principle of consent needs to be strengthened, and the new Regulation could even introduce higher standards than the GDPR.” Speaking for the European Commission’s DG Justice, Karolina Mojzesowicz said that it is important that there is no duplication between the GDPR and e-privacy. It is in the Commission’s interest that the same regulators supervise both GDPR and e-privacy. “We need to provide DPAs with a full set of cooperation mechanisms as under the GDPR, for example, rules on how to deal with trans-border cases.” Rosa Barcelo from EU DG Connect said that some issues still remain where decisions need to be taken, for example, the question of transparency and browser settings, and restrictions on data retention. She thought that the European Parliament would endorse the Commission’s proposal on competent authorities, but the Council may have a different view. The Council is trying to reach a joint position by June. February 07, 2018 Challenges ahead for the European Data Protection Board The retiring Chair of the EU Article 29 Data Protection Working Party, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, who is the President of France’s CNIL (data protection commission), said that some national DPAs have expressed concern over the slow

34

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Victoria Anzola, www.seqqe.com progress with GDPR adaptation laws. The European Data Protection Board, which will replace the Art 29 WP, will start its work on 25 May but it may not be able to take decisions under the consistency mechanism if not all national DPAs are empowered to attend. This may be the case if they are nominated as the regulator in the national adaptation law, but the law is not in place by May. So far, only Germany and Austria have adopted new laws. The Article 29 Working Party elected Dr Andrea Jelinek as its new Chair. Dr Jelinek is the Director of Austria’s Data Protection Authority. She emphasised data protection as a fundamental right, and the importance of creating awareness of new data subject rights. Summarising the work of the Art 29 WP in the last four years, Falque-Pierrotin said that the DPAs are more and more efficient and able to enforce the law in a united way. Future cooperation will be even more intense in the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). The WP 29 has now prepared 12 guidelines on the GDPR. Falque-Pierrotin said that they are not set in stone. She expects revisions in the future as they must adapt to reality. The consultation period of the last of this first set of guidelines (BCRs, Adequacy) has now closed and the WP29 will adopt the final versions soon. She said that there may be more guidelines in the future. “We are not a closed group. We are not closed to external contacts - and have been very active in building bridges with international counterparts,” Falque-Pierrotin said, including in Asia. She encouraged external stakeholders to get involved and provide examples of processing situations. But she said that stakeholders should not expect to rewrite the text. The regulators have the last word.
