President's Corner: ‘Tis the Season of Giving
As we near the end November and prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, many of us naturally turn our thoughts to gratitude. Gratitude for family, for friendships, for our beautiful island home, and for the opportunities we have as business owners, leaders, and residents of this special community. It is a time when we reflect on what we have, but it is also a time to consider what we give.
All of us know that giving back is an important part of the holiday season. But I want to take this moment to focus on why it matters not only in November and December, but throughout the entire year, and why, in particular, it is so important for local businesses to take an active role in supporting the community around them.
The reality is that 2025 has not been an easy year for many individuals or organizations. Costs are up, nonprofit funding has been cut across multiple sectors, and a growing number of our neighbors are quietly struggling to make ends meet. The organizations that provide meals, housing assistance, youth programs, senior services, mental health resources, animal care, and so much more are being asked to do more with less and they can’t do it alone.
This is where local businesses can play an essential role.
Giving back isn’t just a moral responsibility, it is also one of the most powerful investments a business can make. When businesses support the community, the community thrives. And when the community thrives, so do its businesses.
There is no better marketing than being known as a business that cares about its hometown. Sponsoring a fundraiser, supporting a nonprofit event, donating services, offering volunteer hours, or simply saying “yes” when a
local organization needs help are direct actions that create connection, trust, and goodwill. They show customers that your business is more than a storefront or a service provider, you are a neighbor.
The Key Largo Chamber has always been blessed with members who understand this. Our local business community has a long history of supporting charities, schools, youth sports, service organizations, and special causes. But this year more than ever, that support is needed. Even small gestures make a difference: one sponsorship, one partnership, one afternoon of volunteering, one check written where budgets are tight.
And giving back doesn’t only benefit the recipients. It strengthens relationships among businesses as well. Working together for a common good expands networks, creates new friendships, builds collaboration, and reminds us that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves. A strong community and a strong economy go hand in hand.
As the Chamber, we are committed to doing our part as well. Our events, programs, and initiatives not only support the local business community but also open the door for members to get involved, raise awareness, and contribute in meaningful ways. Sponsorships of our monthly luncheons directly help us continue offering valuable programming and networking opportunities throughout the year. And as we look ahead to one of our biggest events, the annual Chairman’s Ball in January, we welcome and encourage those who want to be part of making it a strong celebration of our business community.
Whether as a sponsor, volunteer, donor, or supporter, your involvement matters. It keeps our chamber strong,
Suzi Youngberg
President of Key Largo Chamber of Commerce
keeps our mission moving forward, and allows us to continue providing the tools, advocacy, visibility, and resources our businesses rely on. When you support the chamber, you are supporting your own business and the broader community at the same time.
As we prepare to gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, I hope we all remember that gratitude is best expressed through action. Let us use this season as a reminder to remain mindful of those who could use a helping hand, not just now, but every month of the year. Let’s continue to show what it looks like when neighbors support neighbors, businesses uplift the community, and the spirit of giving becomes a way of life, not just a holiday tradition.
On behalf of the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, I wish you and your families a warm, joyful, and meaningful Thanksgiving. May we all celebrate the blessings we have and remember to share those blessings generously with others.

A Season of Giving: Ways Companies Can Give Back
As the holiday season approaches, companies have a unique opportunity to spread joy and make a meaningful impact in their communities. Whether it's organizing toy drives, creating engaging experiences for employees, or offering avenues for charitable donations, your company has numerous opportunities to give back and embrace the festive spirit. Here are five impactful ways your company can contribute this holiday season.
Host a Company Toy Drive
Hosting a toy drive is an excellent way to give back and spread joy to children who might otherwise go without gifts this year. Organizing a toy drive is simpler than you might think. Start by partnering with local charities or organizations that distribute toys to families in need. This collaboration ensures that your contributions reach those who will benefit most. Encourage employees to participate by donating new, unwrapped toys. You can set up collection bins at various locations within your office or even host special events where people can drop off their donations. Consider adding an element of friendly competition by challenging different departments or teams within the company to collect the most toys.
Organize a Company Raffle
Hosting a company raffle not only excites your team but also gives back to the community. By encouraging employees to donate canned goods in exchange for raffle tickets, you create an opportunity for everyone to contribute to a meaningful cause while having fun. Here's how it can work: For every canned good an employee donates,
they receive one raffle ticket. The more cans they bring in, the greater their chances of winning exciting prizes! This simple yet impactful initiative not only fosters team spirit but also fills local food banks with much-needed supplies during this critical time of year.
Give Back to Heroes
Consider hosting a "Give Back to Our Heroes" event within your company to honor those who have served our country. The initiative provides an opportunity to express gratitude, while also fostering a sense of community and purpose among employees. By organizing activities such as donation drives, volunteer opportunities, or fundraising events specifically aimed at supporting veterans, your company can make a meaningful impact. Hosting such an event not only benefits veterans but also enhances employee morale by involving them in a cause that makes a difference.
Adopt a Family
One powerful way for companies to come together and make a meaningful impact is by adopting a family in need. Imagine the difference we can make when each department joins forces, pooling resources and creativity to support families who could use a helping hand. By participating in an adopt-a-family program, your company can provide essential items like food, clothing and gifts that will brighten the holiday season for those less fortunate. Employees will feel proud knowing they work for an organization that prioritizes compassion and community involvement. It’s an opportunity for team bonding as colleagues collaborate on fundraising efforts or shopping trips.
Gingerbread House Company Contest
One way your company can mix fun with philanthropy is by hosting a company-wide gingerbread house contest. Not only does this activity bring festive cheer and camaraderie among colleagues, but it also offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the community. The twist? The winner gets to choose a charity for the company to donate to in their name. By allowing the winner to select a charity, you empower your team members, making them feel valued and heard. It also reflects positively on your company's image, showcasing your commitment to social responsibility.
Start Spreading Joy Today
Engaging in holiday charitable activities not only benefits those in need but also fosters a sense of unity and purpose among employees. By involving your team, you create opportunities for collaboration and strengthen bonds within your organization.
Whether it's organizing a companywide charity drive or partnering with local organizations to support their initiatives, every effort makes a difference. Moreover, when employees see their company actively involved in philanthropy, it boosts morale and enhances job satisfaction. It shows that the organization cares about more than just profits; it demonstrates a commitment to making a positive impact on society.
So, this holiday season, take the initiative to involve your team in giving back.

10 Interesting Ways That Could Help Your Business Cut Costs
In today’s competitive and often volatile market, businesses are constantly on the lookout for innovative strategies to reduce operational expenses. While some cost-cutting techniques are widely known—such as trimming the marketing budget or reducing overhead—others remain underutilized or even overlooked entirely.
However, the real winners in the business world are the ones that find smart, strategic, and often unconventional ways to reduce costs without compromising quality or performance.
Here are 10 interesting ways your business could start cutting costs, some of which might surprise you.
1. Leverage Advisory Services to Negotiate Better Contracts
If you’re not reviewing and negotiating your business contracts regularly,
you’re probably leaving money on the table. From vendor agreements to employee offer letters, every contract represents a potential cost-saving opportunity.
According to INCPAS, three ways advisory services can help your company include providing contract reviews, offering commercial contract negotiations, and providing employment offer reviews.
These services can uncover inefficiencies or unfavorable terms that may be costing your business more than necessary. By bringing in external advisors for a professional analysis, you ensure that your business agreements are aligned with your financial goals.
2. Improve Energy Efficiency in Hidden Areas
Energy efficiency is a classic area for cost reduction, but many businesses fail to address one of the biggest culprits: equipment inefficiency.
For instance, by cleaning your heat exchanger regularly, you could save $5,000-$10,000 per year in energy costs. Heat exchangers are often overlooked in maintenance schedules, yet they play a critical role in regulating temperature in industrial and commercial settings.
Dirty or inefficient units require more energy to operate, directly increasing utility costs. Regular maintenance not only saves money but also extends the life of the equipment.
3. Shift to Hybrid or Remote Work Models
The pandemic reshaped the way we think about office spaces, and for many businesses, the hybrid or fully remote model is here to stay. Reducing physical office space can significantly lower rent, utility bills, office supplies, and even cleaning services.
Beyond cost savings, remote work often increases productivity and
employee satisfaction, which can reduce turnover and its associated costs. Consider transitioning some departments to remote work permanently or alternating in-office days to downsize your physical footprint.
4. Outsource Non-Core Functions
Why pay full-time salaries and benefits for roles that can be outsourced at a fraction of the cost? Functions like customer service, IT support, bookkeeping, and even marketing can be outsourced to specialized firms or freelancers.
Outsourcing allows businesses to tap into expert talent on an asneeded basis, optimizing efficiency and reducing fixed labor costs. Be strategic—identify non-core activities that don’t require a full-time in-house employee and start there.
5. Use Data Analytics to Drive Efficiency
Big data isn’t just for large corporations anymore. Even small businesses can use affordable analytics tools to track inventory, customer behavior, and financial performance. With better data comes better decisions.
For example, analyzing customer purchasing patterns can help you reduce waste in inventory, optimize pricing, or streamline your supply chain. Identifying underperforming products or services through data also allows you to focus resources on highmargin areas.
6. Streamline Your Technology Stack
Most businesses rely on a variety of digital tools—CRM platforms, communication tools, payroll software, etc. Over time, this stack can become bloated, with redundant tools eating into your budget.
Audit your software and look for opportunities to consolidate or eliminate unnecessary tools. Many
platforms offer multiple functions (e.g., Slack for communication and integrations, or HubSpot for CRM and marketing). Bundling services with a single provider can also yield cost savings through discounts.
7. Foster Customer Loyalty Through Better Engagement
Did you know that enhanced engagement strategies are known to boost customer loyalty by up to 50%? And it’s far more cost-effective to retain an existing customer than to acquire a new one.
Investing in customer loyalty programs, personalized marketing, and proactive support can lead to repeat business and more predictable revenue streams. Loyal customers are also more likely to refer others, decreasing your overall customer acquisition cost.
8. Embrace Automation
From automated invoicing to customer service chatbots, automation has come a long way. Businesses that invest in automation tools can save time and money while reducing the risk of human error. For example:
• Automate your email marketing sequences.
• Set up recurring billing systems.
• Use AI chatbots for FAQs and first-level customer inquiries.
• Automate employee onboarding and HR paperwork.
These efficiencies free up human resources for higher-value tasks and reduce long-term labor costs.
9. Negotiate With Vendors and Suppliers
Many businesses treat vendor pricing as fixed, but the reality is that many suppliers are willing to negotiate— especially if you’ve been a long-term customer or are buying in bulk.
Schedule regular vendor reviews to discuss pricing, terms, and delivery
fees. Consider requesting quotes from competitors and using those as leverage to renegotiate existing agreements. Sometimes even slight adjustments in payment terms (e.g., early payment discounts) can lead to substantial savings over time.
10. Encourage a Cost-Conscious Culture
You can implement all the financial strategies in the world, but if your team isn’t aligned, results will be limited. Empower your employees to think about cost-efficiency in their daily activities.
Some ways to build a cost-conscious culture:
• Reward departments for coming in under budget.
• Encourage suggestions for cost savings and recognize valuable contributions.
• Provide training on smart spending and resource management.
• Use dashboards to make expenses more transparent across departments.
When employees understand the impact of their choices and feel incentivized to contribute, they become active participants in your cost-reduction goals.
Cutting costs doesn’t have to mean cutting corners. With a creative and strategic approach, you can reduce expenses while boosting efficiency, morale, and long-term sustainability. Whether it’s through technology, renegotiating contracts, or simply cleaning your equipment more regularly, there are numerous ways— many of them unexpected—to protect your bottom line.

Brussels Sprouts
with Bacon and Parmesan Cheese
As you are planning your Thanksgiving dinner, don’t forget about Brussels sprouts! Brussels sprouts have earned their place on the Thanksgiving table thanks to their fall harvest season and ability to balance the richness of the holiday meal. Their earthy flavor pairs beautifully with classic ingredients like cranberries, nuts, and maple, making them a natural fit for the feast.
This Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Cheese recipe combines roasted sprouts with smoky bacon and salty Parmesan for rich, savory flavor. A touch of balsamic adds just the right hint of sweetness. It's an easy side dish that pairs perfectly with any dinner.
Ingredients
Bacon: Cook it before adding to the sheet pan.
X Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
X Bacon, cooked and crumbled
X Olive oil
X Salt and black pepper
X Balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze
X Parmesan or Locatelli Romano cheese
A standard bag of Brussels sprouts is about one pound. A regular sheet pan (18 x 13 inches) can hold up to two pounds of halved sprouts. If you're cooking more than two pounds, use two pans so they roast evenly.
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and set the rack in the center. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil coated with cooking spray.
2. Cook the bacon in a dry skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally until crisp. Remove it from the pan, drain on paper towels, and chop into small pieces.
3. Rinse the Brussels sprouts under cold water, pat them dry, then trim the ends and cut them in half through the stem.
4. In a large bowl, toss the sprouts with olive oil, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
5. Spread them out in a single layer on the baking sheet, cut side down, and roast for 15 minutes.
6. Remove the pan from the oven and push all the sprouts toward the center of the pan. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar, then sprinkle pre-cooked bacon and cheese over the top.
7. Return to the oven for another 15 minutes until the sprouts are tender and the cheese is melted.
8. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper before serving.
Serve and enjoy!
