Suzi Youngberg President of Key Largo Chamber of Commerce
This month, once again I write to you with a heart that is a bit heavy, but also hopeful. Recently, I lost my father, who lived a happy and full 87 years. He was my friend, my playmate, and a steady guiding presence in my life. Like many of you who have experienced the passing of a loved one, I find myself navigating both the pain of loss and the quiet gratitude for the memories and love we shared.
Loss is an inevitable part of life and something we all face at different times and in different ways. Whether it’s a parent or other family member, a friend, or a beloved neighbor, the absence they leave behind reminds us of how deeply we are connected. It’s in these moments that the importance of those ties which bind us together becomes so clear. It’s a reminder not to take them for granted.
Now, more than ever, we need one another. We need to be better friends, more engaged family members, more present neighbors. Whether it’s checking in with someone who’s going through a hard time, showing up for a community event, or simply being
President's Corner: The Ties that Bind
kind in small everyday moments, these are the ways we strengthen the bonds that hold us together.
And while we cherish those we've known and loved, it’s also important to keep building new relationships. Life keeps moving, and with it comes opportunities for fresh connections, both personal and professional. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce is how it creates those spaces for connection. Whether it’s at a luncheon or members-in-motion event, a ribbon-cutting or one of our special events, there’s always a place here to meet someone new, to collaborate, to share ideas, or simply to lend a helping hand.
The Chamber isn’t just about business, it’s about people. It’s about lifting each other up and making our community stronger, together.
One great example of that is our Independence Day celebration, which is just around the corner. Each year, the Key Largo Chamber proudly brings the 4th of July festivities, “Celebrating Freedom”, to our community, from the parade and picnic to the incredible fireworks show. But none of it happens without the support of our members, our residents, and our volunteers. This event is more than just a day of celebration. It’s a symbol of what we can accomplish when we come together in the spirit of unity and pride.
If you haven’t been involved before, I encourage you to consider participating this year; whether by volunteering your time, helping to sponsor the event, joining us along the parade route, or simply bringing
your family out to enjoy the day. Your involvement makes a real difference. It keeps our traditions alive, strengthens the bond within our community, and reminds us all how good it feels to come together for something joyful.
As we look around the world today, we see uncertainty and unrest in many places. It can feel overwhelming at times, but it also reminds us of something simple and profound: we all need each other. A little more compassion. A little more understanding. A little more patience. These small acts of care can ripple outward and make a real difference in our homes, in our neighborhoods, and yes, even in our world.
So, as we move forward into the “dog days of summer” months, I encourage all of us to stay connected and work on strengthening those ties that bind us together. Pick up the phone. Write the note. Attend the event. Introduce yourself to someone new. And above all, let’s continue to care for one another with love, respect, and an open heart.
Let’s be the kind of community that supports, uplifts, and embraces. Because in the end, that’s what truly makes Key Largo, and the world, a better place.

4th of July Parade, Picnic & Fireworks
The Key Largo Chamber of Commerce is proud to host this year’s “Pirates, Parrots, and Patriots” themed celebration—our 49th Annual 4th of July Parade! Join us as we bring the community together for a day of family fun, patriotism, and a splash of Keys-style flair.
The parade begins at 10:00 AM sharp, with roads closing at 9:45 AM— so please plan accordingly and arrive early.
Parade Participant Reminders — Please Read!
• Only floats and registered vehicles may enter the staging area.
• Keep gaps tight – no more than one car length between floats. Please do not stop unless the group ahead of you does.
• No offensive or political messaging
of any kind. This day is about unity and community.
• Signs may promote: business, 4th of July themes, registering to vote, or candidates actively running for office.
• Walkers must stay to the side and not obstruct moving vehicles.
• Candy is welcome—please toss it gently toward children on the sides, not in the street.
• No literature or flyers to reduce litter.
• Vehicles must remain in the middle of the road—do not drift into crowds.
• At the end of the route, proceed past Waldorf Plaza to disassemble floats and displays.
• No coolers allowed at the picnic, but refreshments will be sold on-site.
Heads-Up for Spectators and
Parade Participants:
It’s going to be hot… and maybe a little wet! Expect water zones and splashy surprises along the route and during the picnic. If you’re riding in the parade and want to stay dry—keep those windows rolled up!
Freedom Fest Family Picnic
After the parade, head over to Key Largo Community Park where the picnic gates open. Enjoy bounce houses, food trucks, games, and live entertainment. It’s the perfect way to keep the party going.

thank you SPONSORs!

Let’s make this a safe, fun, and unforgettable Independence Day. We can’t wait to celebrate with you! Thank you to the sponsors for helping us make this event possible for our wonderful community.

Preparing for Hurricane Season
Advice for Key Largo Business Owners
By Alex Lamadrid EA, MBA.
As the 2025 hurricane season approaches, Key Largo businesses face the challenge of preparing for severe weather while maintaining financial health. With forecasts predicting above-normal storm activity this year and heavy rains already beginning to fall, proactive planning is more important than ever. At H&R Block Key Largo, we're here to help local businesses navigate both tax complexities and disaster preparedness by sharing essential tax tips and business strategies to help you weather the storm and recover quickly.
Disaster Recovery Planning
Businesses in the Keys should have a documented hurricane disaster recovery plan, which outlines protocols for before, during, and after a storm, including safeguarding financial records, protecting assets, and ensuring employee safety. Start with a risk assessment to identify your most vulnerable operations and assets, using resources like FEMA's business toolkit for guidance.
One of the most critical steps for disaster recovery is digitizing all important documents, including tax returns, payroll records, contracts, and insurance policies. Ensuring that backups are securely stored, so that you can access vital information in the event that your physical office is damaged or inaccessible. Digital records also facilitate the process when filing insurance claims and applying for disaster-related tax relief.
Tax Relief, Deductions, and Insurance
After a hurricane, the IRS and state agencies often provide tax relief for affected businesses, such as extended filing deadlines or the ability to deduct casualty losses. To take advantage of these programs, keep detailed records of storm-related damages and expenses, including photos and receipts. These may be deductible as business losses, reducing your tax liability for the year. After any storm event, be sure to reach out to an accountant to maximize available relief.
This time of year, it's also crucial to review your business insurance policies. Ensure you have adequate coverage for property, inventory, business interruption, and flood damage. Keep digital copies of your policies and contact information for your insurer. Adequate coverage both protects your assets and provides the documentation you may need for tax deductions and relief claims.
Tips for Your Business:
Know that storms have the potential to interrupt business operations for weeks, or even months. You can prepare by building a cash reserve and exploring lines of credit before hurricane season strikes. Review your accounts receivable and payable to ensure you can meet obligations even if revenue temporarily drops. This financial cushion can be the difference between a quick recovery and a prolonged setback. Meeting with an accountant proactively to assist with this process will help you set yourself up for success in the long term. Ensuring that your staff is prepared is also crucial. Clear communication
is key before, during, and after a hurricane. Staff should be aware of emergency procedures and payroll contingencies. Customers should also be notified of any changes to your hours or services so they don't face surprises. Maintaining trust and transparency will help you preserve important business relationships despite disruptions.
Hurricane season brings unique challenges for Florida businesses especially for those of us in the Keys, many of whom rely on the tourism and hospitality industry. However, with careful planning and financial management, your Key Largo business can remain resilient and succeed in the face of natural disaster. With a little proactive preparation, you'll be wellpositioned to protect your business and recover quickly if storms hit, and you'll have peace of mind if they don't. Here's to a safe and uneventful hurricane season, Key Largo!

Air Fried Salmon Poke Bowls
Source: www.thekeystonutrition.com/blog
I’m hooked on grain bowls. I find them so satisfying physically and emotionally. You can’t go wrong with a balanced meal that’s loaded with toppings and flavor. You can make this your own with your favorite add-ins. You could also use a different type of fish (perhaps local) or chicken. I’m a big salmon fan and it’s easy to find in the grocery store. Salmon is high in omega -3 fatty acids which are great for heart and brain health. Aim for consuming fish twice per week per the American Heart Association guidelines. This recipe makes one bowl. Scale up as needed.
Instructions
1. Defrost salmon if needed and cut into 1 x 1 inch cubes.
2. Prepare rice per package. Replace a few tablespoons of the water with rice vinegar. I use a rice cooker for rice so it comes out great every time!
3. Add marinade items (soy sauce, sesame oil honey, rice vinegar, garlic, pepper) to a medium bowl and stir well. Add salmon cubes and let marinate for 20-30 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, chop up ingredients and preheat the air fryer. Stir together the mayo and sriracha to make spicy mayo.
5. Once salmon is marinated and air fryer is preheated, add salmon cubes to the air fryer at 400F for 6-7 minutes.
6. Assemble bowl with rice first then layer toppings as desired, drizzle sriracha mayo, and sprinkle sesame seeds.
Ingredients
X 4 oz. salmon (fresh or frozen, defrosted)
X Marinade
X 2 Tbsp soy sauce
X 1 Tbsp sesame oil
X 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
X 1 Tbsp honey
X 3 cloves garlic, minced
X black pepper
X Bowl Toppings
X 1/2 cup of white or brown jasmine rice seasoned with rice vinegar
X 1/4 cup diced tomatoes
X 1/4 cup edamame
X 1/4 cup diced cucumber
X 1/4 cup shredded carrots
X 1 cup roasted cauliflower or broccoli (totally optional but fun)
X 1/4 sliced avocado
X Cilantro springs, diced or not
X 1 tsp black and white sesame seeds
X Fresh jalapeños, sliced (optional)
X Spicy Mayo
X 1 Tbsp Mayonnaise
X 2 Tbsp Sriracha
