PROUDTOGIVE

In 2021, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation continued to invest in good works all across Southeast Iowa, Hancock County and Clark County. Through partnerships with The Community Foundation of Des Moines County, North Lee Community Foundation, the Matteson Scholarship, professional advisors and most importantly donors, we built upon our core mission to support nonprofits and improve the quality of life in our communities. Since 2005, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation has worked closely with the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, first as an affiliate and then as a partner Community Foundation for the investment of our Keokuk Area Community Foundation Funds. For 16 years, we have been very grateful and proud of that Inpartnership.2021,theKACF

Board of Directors made the decision to move all our funds from GCRCF to be invested in Lee County with the 3 Banks in Keokuk: Pilot Grove Savings Bank; Connection Bank and Two Rivers Bank & Trust. The KACF Finance/Investment Committee, the KACF Executive Committee and the full Board of Directors evaluated and carefully studied the proposals from the banks on the investment management of our funds. Accordingly, on January 9, 2022, all our funds, a total of $6,089,753.08 are now invested in Lee County. A community foundation is only as strong as the people who join us in making a difference. In these pages, we are proud to share stories of giving. We are proud to provide grants to nonprofits to help them address community needs and opportunities. We are proud to provide scholarships to all types of students. We are proud to be your local community foundation.

For Tony and Lori Conn’s dedicated leadership of the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and for their love of this community, we are very thankful and grateful. We wish you the very best and it is has been said: “Happy trails to you!”

Since its establishment in October, 2004, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation (KACF) has been privileged to have many exceptional community leaders serve on its Board of Directors. Those who have served on KACF’s Board are literally a “Who’s Who” of community leaders, all committed to the belief that together we seek to build a great community here in Southeast Iowa. We are proud to honor two exceptional KACF Board members: Lori and Tony Conn. Sadly, their family is relocating to Minnesota and will be greatly missed in our Lori, community.adaughter of Al and Nancy Moander, has been a life-long resident of Keokuk. She served two 3-year terms on the KACF Board, the last two as Secretary of the Board and a member of the Executive Committee. She has served many roles in the community such as Rotary Club President but her passion for involvement also extended to strengthening the Keokuk Catholic Schools. Tony Conn returned to Keokuk over 15 years ago working throughout the USA with chemical companies as well as, a career in the US Army. He returned to Keokuk to lead Conn Communications.

With endowments established in 2005, at both the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community Foundation, the Three Rivers Conservation Foundation has been a pillar of charitable giving in Lee County. The Three Rivers Conservation Foundation is the philanthropic organization of Lee County Conservation which as most Lee County citizens know, provide many educational, recreational, and conservational services for many Lee County communities.

New Executive Director Heather Huebner wants to preserve the good works of Lee County Conservation but also pave the way for a new future for the organization. The Places to Play Campaign aims to create safe places for children to play, exercise, and connect with other children in Lee County. The first leg in the Places to Play Campaign is a shining example of the support this project already has. The group met their goal to build a playground in Pollmiller Park within one year, due to the strong support of the community, which included various grants, matched funds from Lee County Conservation Board, and both personal and business donations from citizens of Lee County. When it was time to build the new playground, LCCB had more volunteers than work needing to be completed. This proves our Lee County community is passionate and excited about the Places to Play Campaign. The next phase of The Places to Play Campaign is the playground in Chatfield Park. This park is outdated and no longer meets the modern safety standards or user expectations. Replacing the current playground will make Chatfield Park a more vibrant destination for families from the Tri-State Area, and it will improve the experience for campers visiting the park. This will increase camping at the park, which will provide an economic impact to the local community. The Three River Conservation Foundation strongly supports this campaign and has already pledged to match the funds raised for the Chatfield Park project up to $35,000.

KEOKUKCATHOLICSCHOOLS

Five-year-old Nicholas dashes into the front office during morning arrival, “I need to give my morning hugs,” he says to both the school secretary and me. In my opinion, there is no better way to start a day! Next, a couple of fifth-grade students come to lead the morning prayers and announcements over the PA system. “We’ve got a good joke for everyone this morning, Mrs. B.” They know how I love a good joke or pun! As classes begin, I enter a fourth-grade classroom having a passionate discussion about eagles and the length of their wingspan. There are two yardsticks on the ground to indicate a 6-foot span, and one student is lying on the floor with his arms out. The kids are amazed! In third grade, the students are excited to discover that levitating hoverboards probably have something to do with magnets. They decide they need to make one of their own. Every classroom is filled with energy, and I am in awe of the inquiry, discovery, and sense of excitement that is infused in the daily learning at St. Vincent’s.”-From Keokuk Catholic Schools Head of School Shari Bororgzad. Although those examples describe a thriving school, St. Vincent's faces significant challenges. A few of our most important hurdles are a continuously leaking roof, an outdated boiler system, and low teacher salaries and benefits. Yes, there is a lot to celebrate at Keokuk Catholic Schools. Still, funding is essential for its continued success in providing one of the area's highest quality, faith-based educational settings. Established in late 2021/ Early 2022, the Keokuk Catholic Schools Giving Fund hopes to address some of the above challenges.

RICHWITHHISTORY KEOKUKSADDLECLUB

The Keokuk Saddle Club is rich with history in Keokuk and the Tri-State Area. 80 years ago, The Keokuk Saddle Club met in barns around Keokuk. During World War II, when gas rationing occurred, The Keokuk Saddle Club started to thrive, trail rides through Keokuk became the norm once or twice a month from spring until fall with 20 to 40 riders of all ages. By 1945, a horse show was added and continued for many years. As time progressed, the club rented land, a show ring, two barns, and a house for a caretaker was built. At its peak, the Keokuk Saddle Club had 50 stalls available for horse owners to keep them and have a place to ride. The Keokuk Saddle Club wants to continue its rich history for future generations. Members believe that riding and showing horses is a great opportunity for all. “We feel it educates people, especially children. Children can learn so much from the experience of owning and riding horses.”-Teresa Murray. The new club will erect a 130’x 250’ horse arena, and construct a 32'x40' multi use building with concrete floor. This building will be used as an announcer stand and storage for tractor, arena tools and mower. It will include getting water and electricity to the site. Donations and grants from the Lee County Charitable Fund, the Grace Bott Millar Trust, the Howard Jackson Trust and the Keokuk Area Community Foundation have paved the way for a new Keokuk Saddle Club that will create its own history and memories for future generations.

Volunteer hard work and sweat make a grant project happen. Changes and frustrations happen all time, but it is how we adapt that make a project benefit a community. The Denmark Firefighter Association was awarded a grant to rebuild an emergency trailer. The Firefighters could have bought new one for 10k, but the idea of rebuilding an old one as a team made more sense. New electrical equipment will be added over time. Eventually, with skillful volunteer labor, the trailer will be finished into a great asset for Denmark and surrounding communities.

In 2021, the North Lee Community Foundation Grant Fund awarded grants to the following nonprofit organizations: • Domestic Violence Intervention Program • Elliott Test Kitchen Foundation • Food Bank of Iowa • Fort Madison Area Arts Association • Fort Madison Family YMCA • Hope Haven Area Development Center • Montrose Riverfront, Inc. • Sheaffer Golf Course • University of Iowa Center for Advancement MONTROSERIVERFRONTINC. The passion for life-long learning is a result of giving. We give to help others learn. Everyone should have access to learning. Musical activities such as Jazz and piano lessons are restricted to only those with means to acquire such an instrument, and an instructor to teach said instrument. Since pianos are extremely large and Jazz requires expensive instruments, this has led to many students not being able to engage with such an art. Using a grant from North Lee Community Foundation and Lee County Youth Services, Inc. The Elliott Test Kitchen hopes to break this barrier, giving all students in the Lee County area the option to pursue music education if they should desire, without consideration of economic status. Music lessons will be given to any student, with no discrimination of any kind. Local Lee County Businesses, including ConAgra and Climax Molybdenum also provided Elliott Test Kitchen with a building in which to hold these lessons. Last Fall, an estimated 50 students were impacted. Test Kitchen Education Foundation (TKEF) has added its second location, Test Kitchen STEM Lounge to keep up with the demand for its programs. For the current school year 2021-22, the number of students who have signed up for its programs has doubled. Visit tkef.org or learn more about the Elliott Test Kitchen.

Using a grant from Lee County Youth Services, Inc., The Great River Players Summer Youth Theatre provides high school students a quality developmental experience every summer. In these times of austere public school funding, Great River Players' Summer Youth Theater is generally the singular opportunity for high school student participation in a musical theater production. Great River Players provides an inclusive, safe and free creative experience.

As the summer progressed, we worked very hard, rehearsing 3-4 times per week, spending lots of time on team building. The students learned a lot and strived to put on a great show. After the performances, we always have a cast party. I arrived first, to set up, and spread the rather motley assortment of tables out across the room. I stepped away to oversee unloading the next trailer full of set pieces. When I returned, the room was not as I had left it. The students had arrived, and they had pulled the tables together into a long (crooked!) line. I asked them what was up, and one of them replied “Well we all wanted to sit together. It's truly amazing how much a young person can grow in eight weeks.”

“About 25 students were present for the first rehearsal, which is pretty great considering how busy high school students are in late May. They clustered together in little cliques, grouping themselves by how they were already connected: school, summer jobs, church. The tables were spread out and of varying sizes, and the distance between them seemed vast despite the average size of the room.
