CS LAUNCHES KNH TELE-RADIOLOGY CENTRE

T

he KNH Diagnostic and Reporting Centre was launched on 22nd March 2020 by the Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon. Mutahi Kagwe.

The centre incorporates a medical teleconferencing facility and Artificial Intelligent Tele-radiology System.

The Diagnostic & Reporting centre will provide services to other hospitals and results shared back within minutes via a sever or online. Doctors from all corners of the world can join in through teleconferencing to interact with local doctors, share ideas and opinions on various medical issues.

“By the installation of this Artificial Intelligent System, KNH becomes the pioneer in the diagnosis of viral pneumonia related infections like the Covid-19 infection and tracking treatment in confirmed cases in the continent. Through this technology and others that we are going to roll out, the government will provide efficient healthcare to our people” Mutahi said.

The Chief Executive Officer KNH Dr. Evanson N. Kamuri said the machine, the first of its kind in Africa, will enable radiologists to receive images from 36 county facilities and provide diagnoses.

Dr. Eunice Omamo who heads the CT scan unit said the machine would speed up the scanning of patients since it can produce 64 images in a single rotation.

The CS health was given a preview of the image sharing of the CT Scan with other specialist from France, Beijing, Wuhan, & MTRH real time.

HACO beautifies KNH ladies in wards Haco Industries conducted a CSR activity at KNH on 6th March, 2020 where they donated gift hampers to female patients across the hospital wards and clinics ahead of International Women’s Day. The hampers containing hair and beauty products will be used for grooming, personal hygiene and cleaning. The team also provided free hair makeovers.

KNH CEO Dr. E.Kamuri thanked the team for giving back to the society and welcomed ideas for future partnership. --

KNH CHAMPIONS FIGHT AGAINST GLAUCOMA

enyatta Nation Hospital Eye clinic held free Eye Pressure Testing from 9th to 12th March 2020 to mark the World Glaucoma Week with the theme B-I-G: Beat Invisible Glaucoma. The four-day project tested over 325 members of the public with 17 confirmed of glaucoma and referred for further consultation.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes progressive and irreversible loss of eyesight. It damages the optic nerve, which carries information from your eyes to the visual center in your brain. This damage can result in permanent vision loss. Most types of glaucoma typically cause no pain and produce no symptoms until noticeable vision loss occurs. Therefore, glaucoma is often described as “the silent thief of sight” and this is why routine eye exams are so important. An eye exam is the only way to detect glaucoma before permanent vision loss occurs.

According to KNH Pediatric Ophthalmologist Dr. S. Sitati, everyone is at risk of acquiring this disease, although there are those at higher risk: people aged over 35, the African race, and people with conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. “We had patients with other diseases coming for the screening. Diseases like allergic conjunctivitis, refractive errors, cataracts, and eye injuries. These patients were screened and advised accordingly”, Dr. Sitati said.

Treatment of Glaucoma saves the remaining sight but it does not improve that which is already lost. Treatment includes medication (pressure-lowering eye drops), surgery to create

Dr. Sitati recommends regular exercise as a way to reduce glaucoma risk as it improves blood flow throughout the body, including the eyes. In addition to regular exercise and an active lifestyle, you also may be able to reduce your risk for glaucoma by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a varied and healthy diet.
