T
he world is becoming more and more sedentary. We are moving less and less. According to the World Health Organization, one in every four adults and three in every four adolescents live an inactive life. The consequence of this is an increase in non-communicable diseases, i.e. diseases that cannot be passed on from one person to another. Non-communicable diseases like
hypertension, diabetes, heart attacks, and obesity are a result of our modern lifestyles that are largely unhealthy. We are consuming foods that are rich in energy, especially junk food and sugar. This energy is from food that is poorly utilized. Our modern lives and urbanization have contributed greatly to this. We use cars to work, then use lifts instead of taking the stairs. When we are at work we sit most of the day at our desks. In the evening we take cars, matatus or bodabodas back home.

The evening is spent on our seats as we rest. At the end of the day the body is left with excessive energy that is unutilized. It then converts it into fat for storage. Over time we notice our weighing scales recording higher and higher numbers as we add weight. This excessive weight puts us at risk of developing high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks, and diabetes.
