ew Year’s Eve is usually filled with pomp and colour, as the people, across the globe, look forward to ushering in a new
chapter. In many places, spectacular fireworks are displayed as soon as the clock ticks midnight, with shouts of Happy New Year” renting the air. This was, however, not the case for Abdulshakur Saidi, a teenage Form Two pupil from Kayole Estate in Nairobi. He
was on his way home with some of his friends after a day out when suddenly the unthinkable happened. “A group of people I know approached us. They checked our pockets to see what we had and since I had left my mobile phone home, it appeared they were disappointed because they did not find anything valuable on us. In a fit of rage, one of them pulled a knife and stabbed my eye,” recalled Abdulshakur. In an interview with Newsline shortly before being discharged from the hospital following successful surgery,

Abdulshakur added: “ My friends panicked and tried to remove the knife as I warned them not to let my mother know. I was scared of how she would react and did not want to send her into panic mode. I also told them not to take me to the hospital as I thought it was just a minor stab.” This only worsened the situation as it ruptured his left globe; the damage had gone from the eye to the base of his skull.
