aving worked at Kenyatta National Hospital for 32 years Mrs. Truphena Murila, Quality Assurance Coordinator, KNH is now approaching retirement. Newsline sat with her to explore her journey and derive key lessons from her experience. What inspired you to work at KNH?

I joined the Nursing school at a very difficult time for me. I had a two-week-old baby then. Juggling family duties and studies was not an easy thing. Most of the time my lecturers would see me dashing home after classes. They several times cautioned me on laxity and not taking my school work seriously. When I completed my nursing training, I was deployed to Coast General Hospital in Mombasa. I wasn’t for it because my husband worked in Nairobi as well. We appealed the posting and requested to be reassigned to a hospital either in Nairobi or Kakamega. An opening was found at Kenyatta National Hospital. That’s how my career at KNH began on January 8, 1988.

My father had two wives. I had 22 siblings. Interestingly, of all his kids, he chose me to follow his career. He was a Clinical Officer. However, this is not what I wanted. My passion was teaching, but he would have none of it. I, therefore, ran away from home, got married thinking he would stop pushing his agenda.
